Abstract The angle auto-tracking capability is needed in the deep space system, but in the sum-differential dual channels tracking model, the deep-space TT&C system must calibrate its phase before tracking a satellite. Because of the big aperture and high frequency of the deep-space TT&C system antenna, it is impossible to build a calibrating tower which satisfy the far-field condition, and the traditional phase calibration method relies on the tower is not suitable. The radio star calibration method selects a appropriate satellite as the calibrating signal source, but the signal of which is very weak and is affected easily. In this paper, the principle of phase calibration is analyzed, and the beam waveguide focus calibration method is studied, the processes of antenna tracking and angle error signal demodulation are given. The beam waveguide focus calibration method simulates the far field signal through controlling the position of horn antenna which is at the focus of the beam waveguide. The method can be realized easily in engineering, and the limit of the traditional calibration tower and the affections of the weather in using radio star calibration method are avoided.

A real-time integrated calibration system for virtual reality environments has been developed that enables accurate electromagnetic tracking of user motions. Electromagnetic tracking systems suffer degradation in accuracy due to the presence of metals and other electromagnetic distortions in the environment. Calibration of the virtual environment to account for these distortions is essential for VR applications in engineering where correlation between the virtual environment and the physical world is important. The major contribution of the paper is the presentation of a comprehensive methodology for calibrating the VR space, the numerical/mathematical techniques proposed for the calibration, and case studies for calibration accuracy and execution time to enable using these techniques in real time in an integrated setup.

Binocular stereovision system is regularly only calibrated once, that is each camera is calibrated using a picture of the calibration pattern laid in the cross field. This methods calibration accuracy is expected to be improved. A twice calibrating method is proposed here. Each cameras extrinsic and intrinsic parameters are calibrated in different fields. The extrinsic parameters are firstly calibrated in the cross field, then the intrinsic parameters are calibrated in the close-range field. By applying the method to one binocular stereovision system built in our lab, it is demonstrated that the proposed method can improve the calibration accuracy more than 3.4dB than the once calibrating method. Its accuracy makes this novel method more suitable for high accurate target tracking application.

The human visual framework, consisting of the eyes, optic nerve, and brain, gives us the sense of sight to capture and interact with our surroundings. The eye, which provides stimulus to generate sight, is a complex organ that collects light and effectively converts it to an electro-chemical impulse inside neurons.Eye trackers are an important input modality for human-computer interfaces with vision-based applications. Eye-tracking systems have been proven to be valuable assistive devices for people with motor disabilities. Despite significant improvements in eye-tracking technology over time, current eye trackers in the market are complex and require intricate calibration procedures. Hence, there is still room for further research to develop an eye-tracking system with simpler calibration procedures.This paper presents the development of a head movement invariant real-time eye-tracking system with simpler calibration procedures that can operate non-intrusively. The complexity of setting up the system is also significantly reduced. Experiments conducted with a sample set of users showed an eye gaze accuracy improvement of over 11% compared to the existing setups commonly available in the market.

AbstractIn this paper, we present a novel 4 camera stereo system for application as optical tracking component in navigation systems in computer-assisted surgery. This shall replace a common stereo camera system in several applications. The objective is to provide a tracking component consisting of four single industrial cameras. The system can be built up flexibly in the operating room e. g. at the operating room lamp. The concept is characterized by independent, arbitrary camera mounting poses and demands easy on-site calibration procedures of the camera setup. Following a short introduction describing the environment, motivation and advantages of the new camera system, a simulation of the camera setup and arrangement is depicted in Section 2. From this, we gather important information and parameters for the hardware setup, which is described in Section 3. Section 4 includes the calibration of the cameras. Here, we illustrate the background of camera model and applied calibration procedures, a comparison of calibration results obtained with different calibration programs and a new concept for fast and easy extrinsic calibration.

Received signal strength (RSS) changes of static wireless nodes can be used for device-free localization and tracking (DFLT). Most RSS-based DFLT systems require access to calibration data, either RSS measurements from a time period when the area was not occupied by people, or measurements while a person stands in known locations. Such calibration periods can be very expensive in terms of time and effort, making system deployment and maintenance challenging. This paper develops an Expectation-Maximization (EM) algorithm based on Gaussian smoothing for estimating the unknown RSS model parameters, liberating the system from supervised training and calibration periods. To fully use the EM algorithm’s potential, a novel localization-and-tracking system is presented to estimate a target’s arbitrary trajectory. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach, it is shown that: (i) the system requires no calibration period; (ii) the EM algorithm improves the accuracy of existing DFLT methods; (iii) it is computationally very efficient; and (iv) the system outperforms a state-of-the-art adaptive DFLT system in terms of tracking accuracy.

Most well-established eye-tracking research paradigms adopt remote systems, which typically feature regular flat screens of limited width. Limitations of current eye-tracking methods over a wide area include calibration, the significant loss of data due to head movements, and the reduction of data quality over the course of an experimental session. Here, we introduced a novel method of tracking gaze and head movements that combines the possibility of investigating a wide field of view and an offline calibration procedure to enhance the accuracy of measurements. A 4-camera Smart Eye Pro system was adapted for infant research to detect gaze movements across 126° of the horizontal meridian. To accurately track this visual area, an online system calibration was combined with a new offline gaze calibration procedure. Results revealed that the proposed system successfully tracked infants’ head and gaze beyond the average screen size. The implementation of an offline calibration procedure improved the validity and spatial accuracy of measures by correcting a systematic top-right error (1.38° mean horizontal error and 1.46° mean vertical error). This approach could be critical for deriving accurate physiological measures from the eye and represents a substantial methodological advance for tracking looking behaviour across both central and peripheral regions. The offline calibration is particularly useful for work with developing populations, such as infants, and for people who may have difficulties in following instructions.

Personal variations severely limit the performance of appearance-based gaze tracking. Adapting to these variations using standard neural network model adaptation methods is difficult. The problems range from overfitting, due to small amounts of training data, to underfitting, due to restrictive model architectures. In this thesis, these problems are tackled by introducing the SPatial Adaptive GaZe Estimator (\spaze{}). By modeling personal variations as a low-dimensional latent parameter space, \spaze{} provides just enough adaptability to capture the range of personal variations without being prone to overfitting. Calibrating \spaze{} for a new person reduces to solving a small optimization problem. \spaze{} achieves an error of \ang{2.70} with \num{9} calibration samples on MPIIGaze, improving on the state-of-the-art by \SI{14}{\percent}. In the introductory chapters the history, methods and applications of eye tracking are reviewed, with focus on video-based eye tracking and the use of personal calibration in these methods. Emphasis is placed on methods using neural networks and the strengths and weaknesses of how these methods implement personal calibration.

In the wake of sequestration, Test and Evaluation (T&E) groups across the U.S. are quickly learning to make do with less. For Department of Defense ranges and test facility bases in particular, the timing of sequestration could not be worse. Aging optical tracking systems are in dire need of replacement. What's more, the increasingly challenging missions of today require advanced technology, flexibility, and agility to support an ever-widening spectrum of scenarios, including short-range (0 − 5 km) imaging of launch events, long-range (50 km+) imaging of debris fields, directed energy testing, high-speed tracking, and look-down coverage of ground test scenarios, to name just a few. There is a pressing need for optical tracking systems that can be operated on a limited budget with minimal resources, staff, and maintenance, while simultaneously increasing throughput and data quality. Here we present a mathematical error model to predict system performance. We compare model predictions to site-acceptance test results collected from a pair of multi-band optical tracking systems (MBOTS) fielded at White Sands Missile Range. A radar serves as a point of reference to gauge system results. The calibration data and the triangulation solutions obtained during testing provide a characterization of system performance. The results suggest that the optical tracking system error model adequately predicts system performance, thereby supporting pre-mission analysis and conserving scarce resources for innovation and development of robust solutions. Along the way, we illustrate some methods of time-space-position information (TSPI) data analysis, define metrics for assessing system accuracy, and enumerate error sources impacting measurements. We conclude by describing technical challenges ahead and identifying a path forward.

A major method in object tracking systems and other inertial measurement devices resolves around the use of one, two, or three axis accelerometers. A leader in the field such devices is Microstrain Incorporated. They have developed a three axis accelerometer that uses a three axis magnetic sensor array to compute the pitch, roll, and yaw of a compact inertial measurement unit. In researching such devices, it became apparent that data collected using such units is extremely sensitive both to local magnetic fields and human interactions with the devices. It is therefore of great importance to ensure the device or devices are properly calibrated. In the construction of an effective calibration program, it is necessary to measure and zero out even minor discrepancies, as even small misalignments have deleterious effects on device performance.

Multi camera measurement systems are widely used to extract information about the 3D configuration or &ldquo
state&rdquo
of one or more real world objects. Camera calibration is the process of pre-determining all the remaining optical and geometric parameters of the measurement system which are either static or slowly varying. For a single camera, this consist of the internal parameters of the camera device optics and construction while for a multiple camera system, it also includes the geometric positioning of the individual cameras, namely &ldquo
external&rdquo
parameters. The calibration is a necessary step before any actual state measurements can be made from the system. In this thesis, such a multi-camera state measurement system and in particular the problem of procedurally effective and high performance calibration of such a system is considered. This thesis presents a novel calibration algorithm which uses the known dynamics of a ballistically thrown target object and employs the Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) to calibrate the multi-camera system. The state-space representation of the target state is augmented with the unknown calibration parameters which are assumed to be static or slowly varying with respect to the state. This results in a &ldquo
super-state&rdquo
vector. The EKF algorithm is used to recursively estimate this super-state hence resulting in the estimates of the static camera parameters. It is demonstrated by both simulation studies as well as actual experiments that when the ballistic path of the target is processed by the improved versions of the EKF algorithm, the camera calibration parameter estimates asymptotically converge to their actual values. Since the image frames of the target trajectory can be acquired first and then processed off-line, subsequent improvements of the EKF algorithm include repeated and bidirectional versions where the same calibration images are repeatedly used. Repeated EKF (R-EKF) provides convergence with a limited number of image frames when the initial target state is accurately provided while its bidirectional version (RB-EKF) improves calibration accuracy by also estimating the initial target state. The primary contribution of the approach is that it provides a fast calibration procedure where there is no need for any standard or custom made calibration target plates covering the majority of camera field-of-view. Also, human assistance is minimized since all frame data is processed automatically and assistance is limited to making the target throws. The speed of convergence and accuracy of the results promise a field-applicable calibration procedure.

This thesis develops an algorithm enabling accurate tracking of human faces, precise estimation of head poses, efficient resolution of occlusions and improved depth perception under different lighting conditions. The system also utilises two stereo cameras that have the ability to track movements across six degrees of freedom, thereby accounting for pose variations. The system can address circumstances in which facial features are no longer discernible, as the results demonstrate increased accuracy in real-time estimation of head poses and facial landmark features. It can also precisely map facial features in different head poses, making it extremely robust for applying 3D facial tracking solutions.

A tracking system that serves as a tool for tracking the movement of surgical instruments has been developed. The system tracks color markers on the surgical instruments. The Continuously Adaptive Mean Shift (CAMSHIFT) methodology was employed for tool tracking and a total distance traversed by the surgical instrument of interest was calculated. Two cameras were used to record the motion of the tool and the software developed was used to track the movement of markers on the tools over subsequent frames. The information thus derived from the two views of cameras was used to calculate the three dimensional coordinates of the location of the marker on the instrument and subsequently the distance traversed. MATLAB, which is a commercial software package, was used to implement the tool tracking algorithm and for developing the GUI (Graphic User Interface). Data was collected using Commercial off the shelf (COTS) camera hardware and processing was done on a 2.2 GHz, 512 MB RAM Intel Pentium 4 computer.

One of the purposes of this study is to develop a vision system consisting of 3 inexpensive, commercial cameras. The system is intended to be used for tracking the motion of objects in a large calibration volume, typically 6.5 m. wide and 0.7 m. high. Hence, a mechanism is designed and constructed for the calibration of the cameras. The second purpose of the study is to develop an algorithm, which can be used to obtain the kinematic data associated with a rigid body, using a vision system. Special filters are implemented in the algorithm to identify the 3 markers attached on the body. Optimal curves are fitted to the position data of the markers after smoothing the data appropriately. The outputs of the algorithm are the position, velocity and acceleration of any point (visible or invisible) on the body and the angular velocity and acceleration of the body. The singularities associated with the algorithm are also determined. Using the vision setup and the developed algorithm for tracking the kinematics of a rigid body, the motions of the saddles of different horses are investigated for different gaits. Similarities and differences between horses and/or gaits are analyzed to lead to quantitative results. Using the limits induced by the whole body vibration of humans, for the first time in the world, daily, allowable riding time and riding distances are determined for different horses and gaits. Furthermore, novel, quantitative horse comfort indicators are proposed. Via the experiments performed, these indicators are shown to be consistent with the comfort assessment of experienced riders. Finally, in order to implement the algorithms proposed in this study, a computer code is developed using MATLAB®
.

AbstractThe chapter gives an overview of particle detectors, with the emphasis on tracking detectors. The working principles and the calibration of gaseous, semiconductor, and fiber detectors are explained, followed by a brief review of detector alignment. As an illustration, the tracking systems of the four experiments at the LHC and two non-LHC experiments, Belle II and CBM, are presented.

Resumen
AbstractModern immersive virtual reality (VR) systems include embedded hand tracking, stand-alone and wireless operation, fast donning and calibration: these features are precious for usability of rehabilitation serious games in the clinical practice, envisaging also home-care applications. Can wearable haptics well integrate with the above features? Different designs result in a trade-off between wearability and richness of feedback. Yet, engagement of the user is also one of the key-features for rehabilitation serious games. We developed two novel fingertip devices aiming the first at lightweight and wearability, the second at rich and powerful cutaneous feedback. We compared the two designs in terms of usability and users’ engagement within a modern rehabilitation system in immersive VR.

Resumen
Electromagnetic tracking systems used in virtual reality applications are subject to tracking error due to magnetic field distortions caused by metallic objects in the environment. The goal of this research was to create and evaluate an automated data collection systems and calibration methods to allow a hands-free calibration of a complex space with multiple physical objects in the environment. The need was for a suitable device to automatically collect data points for the physical reference system without causing further distortion to the magnetic field. The calibration device was designed in order to accurately position the electromagnetic receiver at user-specified grid points throughout the tracking environment, thereby allowing the calculation of position and orientation error at each location. Novel methods were created to avoid collision of the automated calibration device with objects in the environment. The tests showed that the density of calibration and the flexibility achieved with this device far exceed any previous methods used. This research built on our previous efforts to create a software system to assist in manual data collection for calibration.
