Resumen
This volume collects papers presenting corpus-based research on Chinese language and linguistics, from both a synchronic and a diachronic perspective. The contributions cover different fields of linguistics, including syntax and pragmatics, semantics, morphology and the lexicon, sociolinguistics, and corpus building. There is now considerable emphasis on the reliability of linguistic data: the studies presented here are all grounded in the tenet that corpora, intended as collections of naturally occurring texts produced by a variety of speakers/writers, provide a more robust, statistically significant foundation for linguistic analysis. The volume explores not only the potential of using corpora as tools allowing access to authentic language material, but also the challenges involved in corpus interrogation, analysis, and building.

Cardoso, Adriana. Portuguese Relative Clauses in Synchrony and Diachrony. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198723783.001.0001.

Texto completo
Resumen
This book sheds light on language variation and change from a generative syntactic perspective, based on a case study of relative clauses in Portuguese and other languages. Concretely, it offers a comparative account of three linguistic phenomena documented in the synchrony and diachrony of Portuguese: remnant-internal relativization, extraposition of restrictive relatives, and appositive relativization. The research methodology adopted involves comparative syntax, both in the diachronic and the synchronic dimensions: Contemporary European Portuguese is systematically compared with earlier stages of Portuguese; moreover, Portuguese is compared with other languages, in particular Latin, English, Dutch, and Italian. The book provides new perspectives on the syntax of relativization. From a theoretical perspective, it shows that competing analyses need not be either false or true universally, but can be instrumental in explaining language variation (both diachronically and synchronically). As for the variation found in the synchronic and diachronic dimensions, it is proposed that languages (and different stages of the same language) might vary according to whether they allow relativization to be derived from specifying coordination. Moreover, the book reports a series of changes that took place in the history of Portuguese after the sixteenth century, which reduced the patterns of nominal discontinuity available in the language.

Resumen
This chapter begins the more constructive program of articulating doctrine from the perspective of rhythm using both synchronic and diachronic perspectives. In this chapter on creation, the synchronic analysis argues for rhythm as the fundamental, theologically significant form of creation through an analysis of Genesis 1 and its exegesis by various Church Fathers, including Augustine. The diachronic, intra-creaturely analysis argues for the influence of cultural rhythms on metaphysical accounts of creation by demonstrating a confluence between the rhythms of the respective cultural contexts of Augustine and Catherine Keller with the ways in which each thinker conceptualizes the metaphysical function of rhythm. Metaphysical descriptions of rhythm are therefore better understood as indices of the nature of the encounter between God and creation at particular times and places than as descriptions of an enduring form of reality.

Resumen
In this chapter, two tenth-century CE Coptic alchemical papyri will be scrutinized palaeographically and analysed in their capacity as artefacts. The analysis aims at understanding the ways and means through which two alchemical texts were embodied in manuscripts by one individual scribe, presumably an alchemical practitioner himself, and it reveals a striking multitude of different scripts and codes applied by him. Attempts will be made to account for the regularities by which his choice of each of those codes was triggered. Comparing single components of this scribe’s repertoire with diachronic and synchronic parallels, an overall picture of his intellectual setting and educational background will be outlined.

Bayley, Robert. Variationist Sociolinguistics. Editado por Robert Bayley, Richard Cameron y Ceil Lucas. Oxford University Press, 2013. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199744084.013.0001.

Texto completo
Resumen
The central ideas of variationist sociolinguistics are that an understanding of language requires an understanding of variable as well as categorical processes, and that the variation witnessed at all levels of language is not random. Rather, linguistic variation is characterized by orderly or “structured heterogeneity.” In addition, synchronic variation is often a reflection of diachronic change. This chapter reviews representative studies and outlines the main assumptions underlying the variationist approach. It presents an example of variationist analysis, using the well-known case of variation between Spanish null and overt subject personal pronouns. Then, the chapter considers a number of relatively recent developments in variationist sociolinguistics including the expansion of the variationist paradigm into new areas such as second-language acquisition and sign linguistics, as well as recent work that combines ethnographic observation and quantitative analysis.

Texto completo
Resumen
This chapter investigates how a theory of events can be combined and be compatible with the theory of parametric variation in the generative tradition. At the diachronic level, Chinese resultatives developed from serial verb constructions with two subjacent verbal predicates in Old Chinese. The two adjacent verbs are reanalyzed as components of a single de-adjectival verb in the period of Middle Chinese due to language acquirers’ preference for structural simplicity. At the synchronic level, the preference for computational efficiency is also responsible for the fact that English style resultatives are not attested in Chinese. The English style resultatives are not attested in Romance languages due to a property in the lexicon of Romance languages: the valuation of the [uDiv] feature, or verbal feature, has to be achieved via incorporation in Romance languages, thus rejecting the operation of feature sharing that is crucial for the derivation of the English-style resultatives.
