Resumen
The author discusses a small initial experience of using synchronic description in musicology texts. In the beginning, the origin of the synchrony–diachrony dichotomy introduced into linguistics by Ferdinand de Saussure is revealed. These terms and concepts from linguistics turned out to be so generative in methodological terms that they were adapted into other scientific disciplines. Starting with Saussure, the specificity of the relations of the two approaches is most deeply expressed as the relation of the system of the subject – synchrony and its evolution – diachrony. Next, the article discusses collective intelligence (Lotman) as a result of the activity and cooperation of experts of the same specialty. The productivity and relevance of using a synchronic approach for an adequate comparison of musical works, especially in the history and theory of performing arts, is emphasized. The main objective of the article was to test the use of a synchronic approach for the formation of textual information about the formation of the classical style in musical Europe of the XVIII century. The main pathos and function of the synchronic approach is "comparison". When the beginnings of events are aligned, it becomes possible to compare them (events) with each other, and the results of the comparison are attributed to the synchronization time. The synchronic approach demonstrates the continuity and monomericity of historical time. In synchrony, we see that juxtaposition and comparison overcome the natural separateness of historical events. The conclusions of the article summarize the main properties of the synchronic and diachronic approaches: synchrony reflects the system structure of the object and phenomenon, and diachrony, their evolution. For more productive event matching, synchronization of several parameters and types is necessary. This type of historical research can be described as a multifactorial synchronic analysis of historical events. Further prospects for the development of synchronic and diachronic approaches lie in their synthesis, when multiple slices of synchrony are sorted by chronology, and diachrony consists of synchronic slices of time.

Resumen
The purpose of the article is to highlight the views of linguists of the second half of the XX – early XXI century on the importance of synchronic and diachronic studies of lexical meaning and identify the tendency of modern linguists to consider synchrony and diachrony as components of one whole. With the help of synchronic-diachronic study of language, studies of lexical semantics are presented in an extremely wide range of works, which receive new opportunities to explain semantic processes and highlight similar dominant features in both structurally related and unrelated languages. The scientific interest of linguists can be directed both to the study of a particular morpheme and to the derivation of universal laws for the development of the lexical meaning of the world’s languages. The vast majority of studies, however, have a more or less clear distribution on the principle of synchrony and diachrony. The article highlights the current perception of diachronic research as one that consists of a number of studies of synchronous sections in the history of lexical meaning, and as a result is considered as one holistic effective study. In accordance with the purpose of the article, a general scientific method is used – an actualist method, which is based on the principle of historicism and allows modern knowledge to trace the development of certain linguistic concepts in the past and predict some trends in future theories. The methodological basis of the actualist method is the principles of historicism, causality, systematics and the principle of general connection of phenomena. As the result of the research it was established that the linguists of our time accept the idea of not confrontation, but of fruitful joint work of synchronic and diachronic research of lexical meaning, unity of synchronic description and historical reconstruction. The author concludes that from the point of view of modern linguistics, the dichotomy of synchrony and diachrony is quite conditional. Synchronous research is not opposed, but, on the contrary, is an important component of diachronic research, because diachronic analysis without synchronic one does not exist. The tacit ban on the use of language history data in synchronic analysis has been overcome.Key words: synchrony, diachrony, dichotomy, non-linguistic concept, interdependence, flexible way of thinking, scientific subjectivism.

Resumen
Matthew 18:15—20: A diachronic and synchronic investigation with special reference to church discipline It is well known that gospel material consists of traditional matter as well as the evangelists' own input. A thorough exegesis should contain both the aspects of the investigation into the growth of the tradition (diachrony), and the study of the text in its final stage (synchrony). Matthew 18:15—20 is subjected to such an approach. As part of the diachrony these verses are studied by means of the historical critical paradigm. Special attention is paid to source and redaction criticism. Under the synchronic aspect this pericope is investigated structurally, historically and theologically. Discourse and narrative analyses are used for the structural component.

Resumen
Abstract This article examines a sample of comparative-historical literature to assess when convincing generalizations are made and when they are not. Although a variety of factors can affect the potential for generalization, the focus here is on the difference between diachronic and synchronic generalizations. Separate sections are devoted to synchronic-idiographic, synchronic-nomothetic, diachronic-idiographic, and diachronic-nomothetic analysis and research. Evidence is presented to demonstrate that synchronic generalizations are common in comparative history. The most attention in the article is, however, given to the challenges faced when generalizing diachronically and especially when generalizing sequentially. The article ends with a discussion of the effects of inter-societal forces on comparative-historical generalization and with a conclusion outlining when comparative-historical generalizations seem to be more or less successful.

Resumen
The article examines the semantics of idioms of antique origin in media discourse from the standpoint of synchrony and diachrony. The study of media discourse as a phenomenon of language and as an extralinguistic entity enables us to consider it using methods of cognitive and discourse analyses. Phraseological units as inherent elements of mediatexts have a powerful connotative (evaluative) potential at the synchronic level that is identified by referring to the source of the expression at the diachronic level. Cognitive analysis determines the evaluative potential in the semantics of idioms associated with subjective modalities. Axiological modality represents rational (positive or negative) evaluation of real situations. Emotive modality embraces the whole range of emotions (condemnation, approval, admiration, disapproval). Deontic modality relates to the system of norms that regulate the behavior of people in the society. Being originally precedent phenomena, phraseological units of antique origin store in their semantics a considerable volume of information about the events of past epochs, about the value system of the ancient world. The study of idioms of antique origin as a synchronous unit does not give a complete idea of its modern meaning. The combination of cognitive analysis method that examines the synchronic semantics of the phraseological unit from the position of diachronic approach, and discourse analysis method, which takes into account the extralinguistic situation, can determine the actual sense and connotative potential of the idiom of antique origin in the mediatext.

In both diachronic and synchronic studies of archaeological examples of Ontario Iroquoian longhouses, the standard method of analysis is spatially static. In this paper, the spatially dynamic method is used to analyze longhouses representative of diachronic and synchronic episodes encompassing over 800 years of Ontario Iroquoian prehistory. The results of the analysis using this approach provide significant quantifiable data on the development of Iroquoian matrilocal residence systems and functional and tribal variation in longhouse settlement patterns.

Resumen
In this paper we want to develop a model for the diachronic analysis of speech acts by tracing one particular speech act through the history of English, viz. insults. Speech acts are fuzzy concepts which show both diachronic and synchronic variation. We therefore propose a notion of a multidimensional pragmatic space in which speech acts can be analyzed in relation to neighboring speech acts. Against this background we discuss both the changing cultural grounding in which insults occur and the changing ways in which they are realized. Our data is drawn from the Old English poem Beowulf and the Finnsburh fragment, from Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales and from Shakespeare’s plays, and from a variety of non-literary sources such as personal letters, court records and an internet discussion group. The scale ranges from everyday communication to ritualized behavior. When written materials of the past periods are analyzed, the bias towards the conventionalized insults is evident. Most early examples are found in literary texts and seem to reflect generic conventions of the time and the culture that gave rise to these literary forms.

The paper presents the diachronic and synchronic analysis of the use of Croatian words spol and rod and their Croatian Church Slavonic (polь, spolь, and rodь) and English (sex and gender) equivalents. The starting points for diachronic analysis are dictionaries and dictionary data, while the synchronic analysis is additionally based on the corpora and the Internet. The paper focuses on dictionary definitions of nouns rod and spol, adjectives rodni and spolni, the relation of Croatian terms rod and spol with English terms gender and sex, the terminology of sex/gender (non)discrimination, and ways of speaking about persons of non-binary gender.

Resumen

This study first postulates a set of vowels for Proto-Kotiria and Wa'ikhana informed by previous studies which reconstructed the vowels for Proto-Tukanoan, the family to which Kotiria and Wa'ikhana belong, and by the modern vowel inventories of these languages. Then, a comparative description of vowel pronunciation between two time points, 1905 and 2010, is undertaken. This description reveals that, while there has not been a change in vowel inventory, there are differences in speakers' production of vowels between these two times. The suprasegmental systems as well as the aspiration patterns of each of these languages is also looked at as possible explanation for changes in pronunciation.

Resumen
Descriptive perception verbs have failed to receive a uniform analysis in previous verb classifications (cf. Chomsky 1965, Rogers 1974, Hengeveld 1992, Levin 1993, Van Eynde et al. 2014). This thesis argues that the descriptive perception verbs in Dutch (i.e. eruitzien 'look', klinken 'sound', voelen 'feel', ruiken 'smell', and smaken 'taste') should be classified as copular verbs, much like lijken 'seem' and schijnen 'seem'. This classification is supported by both the synchronic and diachronic behaviour of these verbs in Dutch. Synchronically, proposing that Germanic copular verbs (as opposed to copulas) are defined by their syntax rather than their (empty) semantics, I discuss that the Dutch descriptive perception verbs behave like stereotypical copular verbs: they require a predicative complement, usually in the form of an adjective. Semantically, the Dutch descriptive perception verbs are much like the copular verbs blijken 'turn out', lijken 'seem' and schijnen 'seem' in terms of epistemicity and evidentiality. Diachronically, I hypothesize that the Dutch descriptive perception verbs have evolved from one of the following two origins: either from intransitive verbs (as is the case for klinken and ruiken), much like English remain, through grammaticalization processes of semantic bleaching and reanalysis; or from cognitive perception verbs (as is the case of eruitzien and voelen), as found in Latin, Japanese and Zulu, through the process of argument reordering. The origin of smaken is not clear, and is left for future research. I show that other Germanic evidential copular verbs (i.e. lijken, schijnen 'seem', scheinen 'seem', seem) have developed diachronically in a uniform fashion, suggesting the following grammaticalization path: from a lexical verb to a copular verb, to taking a that-complement, an infinitival complement or a like-complement, and eventually being used in parenthetical constructions. The results of this thesis indicate that the Dutch descriptive perception verbs are only at the beginning of this grammaticalization path, but are on their way to becoming grammaticalized evidential copular verbs.

BOLSA NOTA 10
In this doctoral dissertation, Brazilian rewritings of Charles Perrault s tales are analysed from a diachronic and synchronic perspective with the aim of comprehending the different forms in which this seventeenth-century French writer s stories have been rewritten in the Brazilian literary system. Published in France in 1697, Stories or Tales of Bygone Times, with Morals or Tales of Mother Goose, which was later acknowledged as a classic of children s literature, contains eight tales in prose followed by morals in verse at the end of each narrative: The Sleeping Beauty in the Wood, Little Red Riding-Hood, Bluebeard, The Master Cat or Puss in Boots, The Fairies, Cinderella or The Little Glass Slipper, Ricky of the Tuft and Little Thumb (full translations of the titles from the French source text). In these tales, while drawing on popular stories from the oral tradition, Perrault inserts his trademark morals in verse, offering a final comment on the story told in prose. Considering that the morals have a twofold function - both authorial and literary - the transmission of the tales in Brazil is studied with a focus on this dual aspect: authorship and literariness. Taking Descriptive Translation Studies as the main theoretical perspective and adopting Lambert and Van Gorp s methodology, the corpus under analysis is composed of rewritings (and their paratexts) published in books, ranging from when the tales first appeared in the Brazilian literary system in the late nineteenth century to the current day, the most recent of which having been published in 2016. Some metatexts are also examined, such as letters and interviews, which are helpful for understanding the rewriters and editors objectives. Based on Andre Lefevere s theoretical work on rewriting and patronage, it is suggested that rewritings exert a central role in establishing and maintaining literary canons and project new or distinct images of works and authors, according to the poetological and ideological conceptions of the actors responsible for the publications (rewriters, preface writers, editors). Therefore, a proposal is made for the adoption of an approach for research in literary studies that takes account of the centrality of the rewriting factor, in analyses of foreign works in target literary systems. As seen in the case of Perrault in Brazil, the most recent rewritings, which differ significantly in literary terms from the older rewritings, project new images of the work and the writer, making new readings possible for a contemporary readership.

Resumen
This volume collects papers presenting corpus-based research on Chinese language and linguistics, from both a synchronic and a diachronic perspective. The contributions cover different fields of linguistics, including syntax and pragmatics, semantics, morphology and the lexicon, sociolinguistics, and corpus building. There is now considerable emphasis on the reliability of linguistic data: the studies presented here are all grounded in the tenet that corpora, intended as collections of naturally occurring texts produced by a variety of speakers/writers, provide a more robust, statistically significant foundation for linguistic analysis. The volume explores not only the potential of using corpora as tools allowing access to authentic language material, but also the challenges involved in corpus interrogation, analysis, and building.

Resumen
Abstract I argue that Contrastive Hierarchy Theory (CHT) makes it possible to implement Roman Jakobson’s 1931 program for diachronic phonology. CHT computes segmental contrasts by language-particular feature hierarchies and incorporates the Contrastivist Hypothesis, which holds that only contrastive feature specifications can be active in the phonology. This empirical hypothesis is susceptible to be falsified by the ‘Oops, I Need That’ Problem. I review two case studies: the evolution of the modern Manchu vowel systems from Classical Manchu, and changes in i-umlaut from early Germanic to Old English. Both cases adhere to the Contrastivist Hypothesis and show connections between diachronic change and synchronic analysis as proposed by Jakobson, and between contrast and activity as predicted by CHT.

Resumen
This paper argues for a broadening of the analytic scope of Interactional Linguistics (IL) to embrace systematic investigation into how grammar grows out of social interaction longitudinally. While IL has amply documented the ways in which grammar structures interaction and emerges locally in real time within and across turns-in-progress, evidence for how social interaction motivates the routinization (or: sedimentation) of grammatical usage patterns over time is scarce due to lack of diachronic interactional data. I review the few existing diachronic and synchronic studies on the issue, and argue that the investigation of second language (L2) interactions opens new avenues for IL research, enabling us to empirically document the over-time emergence of grammar-for-interaction. I then present an analysis of the developmental trajectory of je sais pas ‘I don’t know’ in French L2 interactions across four proficiency levels, showing that the expression progressively routinizes as an interaction-organizational marker in ways that exhibit parallels to diachronic grammaticalization processes. This demonstrates how the study of L2 interactions can provide developmental evidence for how grammatical patterns emerge and sediment over iterative social encounters as resources for social interaction. The investigation of L2 data hence creates new opportunities for IL research in view of a better understanding of grammar as an outcome of peoples’ acting in the social world.

Resumen
This contribution examines the co-existence in French of two impersonal constructions with a light verb and a weather noun, as in il y a / il fait du vent ‘it’s windy’ (lit. there is / it makes wind). Our starting point stems from Bauer’s (2000) observations on Vulgar Latin postulating that facere ‘do, make’ with weather nouns appears to compensate for the diminishing use of intransitive weather verbs. Based on a diachronic and synchronic corpus study of weather sentences extracted from Frantext, we argue that Bauer’s hypothesis can apply at best to Middle French. For Modern and Contemporary French, our analysis reveals that both constructions are existential with il fait+N specializing in expressing ambient states and the il y a-construction in expressing atmospheric events or substances.

Resumen
This study provides a construction grammar account in line with Lakoff (1987) and Goldberg (2006) of two types of deictic-presentative constructions in Spanish, [he aquí NP] and [aquí está NP]. Following up on Lakoff’s (1987, pp. 462–585) seminal analysis of English there-constructions and drawing on the findings of Bergen & Plauché (e.g. 2005) on French voilà-constructions, it will be shown how the formal properties of both structures are not only linked to the same function but also motivated by it. This synchronic constructional analysis is meant to lay the groundwork for a subsequent diachronic account of the historical origins of these constructions, that is, their constructionalization from Indo-European and Semitic deictic particles (he aquí NP) and from presentational adverb-verb-subject constructions (aquí está NP). It will be argued that the substitution of he aquí-constructions by aquí está-constructions can be described in terms of syntactic regularization. Depending on the matter in question, this study relies on both qualitative and quantitative analyses of corpus data.

Resumen
This chapter examines ‘hybrid agreement’ in polite address in the Romance languages. This term usually describes a two-way agreement pattern and presents a major challenge to syntactic theories due to the apparent formal mismatches that occur, for example, in French Vous êtes loyal ‘You are loyal’, where the polite address pronoun vous and the predicate êtes are both plural, while the predicative adjective loyal is singular. Similarly, Modern Italian shows a gender conflict between the female politeness pronoun lei and the predicative adjective when the addressee is male, e.g., Lei è generoso ‘You are generous’. While Pollard and Sag (1994) and Wechsler (2011) assume double feature sets for solving mismatches of this sort, I propose an analysis including single feature sets and a syntactic politeness feature in the classical version of Lexical-Functional Grammar. Synchronic as well as diachronic evidence is supplied from a contrastive perspective on French, Italian, Peninsular Spanish, and Chilean Spanish.

Resumen
This chapter analyzes two constructional changes by deletion of linguistic elements in Brazilian Portuguese (BP) in the 20th century, namely, the null clitic se constructions (specifically, reflexive, reciprocal, middle, anticausative, passive, and impersonal constructions) and the chopping relative construction, as two relevant manifestations of the recent standardization of the BP variety diverging from European Portuguese (EP). Based on a usage-feature and profile-based analysis and adopting a sociocognitive view of language, especially Cognitive Grammar, this study shows that the deletion of the clitic se conveys a shift to a nonenergetic, absolute construal of the event, and that the deletion of the preposition correlates with the grammaticalization of the relative pronoun que and highlights the accessibility of the nominal antecedent. Three contributions to research on language change are stressed: changes by deletion generate new constructions with their own meanings; synchronic constructional alternation, such as the one existing in BP between overt and null se constructions and the one already nonexistent in BP but existing in EP between pied-piping and chopping constructions, allows simulation of the diachronic constructional change in real time; and successful media from the mid-20th century onward, such as TV Globo for the huge Brazilian population, play a central role in language change and standardization.

Resumen
AbstractThe year 2020 was marked by the implementation of lockdowns at the global scale to contain the COVID-19 pandemic by drastically minimizing human contacts. This public health measure was instantly described as “medieval” by several political actors but, facing the surge of the pandemic, most governments—with a few exceptions such as Sweden—opted for this choice. Social sciences literature has already begun to analyse the feelings and emotions of citizens towards lockdowns, the impact of health measures on trust in governments, the responses of so-called “populist” parties to this restriction of freedom of movement or the political aspect of lockdowns that were presented as health measures during the first wave of COVID-19. However, few studies have examined the different realities that lockdown measures recovered depending on the country in which they were implemented and the evolutions of these measures over time. This chapter aims to fill this gap and has a double objective. On the one hand, it aims to highlight these differences, and on the other hand to highlight the explanatory factors at the origins of these differences. The comparative analysis will be based on a database covering 32 countries to distinguish between strict and more flexible lockdowns by means of different variables such as the order to “stay home”, the number of kilometres of travel allowed outside home, or the presence or self-filled forms for leaving home. The study period is from March 2020 to July 2021 and spans across three different waves of COVID-19. A double synchronic and diachronic analysis will be performed to categorize the countries according to the strictness of the lockdowns for each wave but also in an evolutionary way to perform an average over the study period. The first results show that there is no correlation between the measures adopted by the countries and the actual circulation of the virus. One can also observe great divergences between countries according to the waves. For example, during the first wave, Southern Europe adopted much more drastic lockdown measures than Northern Europe, a trend that was subsequently reversed. These results will be controlled by the level of GDP or the confidence of citizens in institutions to understand the origin of these differences and their evolutions.

Resumen
Buton Island is one of the largest Islamic Sultanate territories in Indonesia. One of the remains of the Buton Sultanate is the Grand Mosque of the Buton Sultanate (TGMOTSOB). TGMOTSOB was founded in 1537 and 1929 and renovated by the 37th Sultan of Buton. Over time TGMOTSOB has experienced changes in the appearance of the building. Changes in form in architecture fall within the scope of synchronic and diachronic. Changes in architecture and morphology correlate synchronically and diachronically. This correlation is important to explore to explain changes in ideas and meanings in the history of the building. This systematic review aims to: 1) gain a deeper understanding of the architectural morphology at TGMOTSOB; and 2) This systematic review can identify the instruments used to measure TGMOTSOB architectural morphology. This research concludes that TGMOTSOB can be studied by architectural morphology with building materials, building color, and changes in building shape based on factors of need and demand, technology, and political needs. Keywords: Changes in building shape, building materials, building colour.

Resumen
In this article the author points out that the insights of linguistic structuralism essentially formed the basis for the emergence of later currents in linguistic and scientific grammar. In addition, the representatives of linguistic structuralism have succeeded in significantly expanding the linguistic methodological inventory. The intensive use of experimental procedures such as substitution sample, replacement sample, omission sample and others has both enriched the methodological research inventory and marked the shift from empirical and diachronic to synchronic linguistic research. The experimental methods developed by the structuralists are also used in the newer linguistic currents, such as in the Construction Grammar in the construction-grammatical analysis.

Resumen
The present contribution describes the results of a research carried out at the Laboratory of Experimental Research - Department of Education, Roma TRE University. Main aim of the research is to assess if it possible to increase critical thinking skills in university students, through meaningful online cultural insights in general and webcasting in particular. Students in Education attended part of the course “Methodology of Research” online, through a webcasting activity: cultural insights, guided discussions, videos, built on structured models, prompted reasoning, elaboration of ideas and knowledge connections. Students had the possibility to deepen knowledge and abilities linked to the themes of the course, but also to develop argumentation skill, communication and critical evaluation skill. The data analysis presented in this report were developed along the double diachronic and synchronic dimensions; the evolution of critical thinking skills has been verified by the lexicon-metric analyses of written production.

Resumen
The paper analyzes Ilya Ehrenbourg’s novel “The Fall of Parisˮ (1942) against the background of synchronic and diachronic cultural contexts. The author pays special attention to the mythologization of Paris from the middle of the 19th century and to the ideological consequences of the country’s defeat in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870. The work shows the connection of the writer’s novel with the cultural background of France “between two warsˮ. The novelist’s polemical dialogue with Jean Giraudoux on the Franco-German value-cultural collisions is demonstrated. It is concluded that for Ehrenbourg, as for a number of his Western brethren and recent researchers, the fall of Paris in 1940 was a sign of the end of the entire traditional West of Modern Times, and more specifically, the era of Modernism.

Resumen
By indicating a connection between tradition and modernity, names offer a clear image of the past and the present. Names mirror the particularities of individuals’ lives, on the one hand, and the life of the communities, on the other. The aim of this study is to analyse the way in which first names given by people in the Land of Chioar were influenced by multiculturalism, mostly associated with religion, ethnicity and the onomastic fashion at the time of naming. Therefore, a strong impact can be observed in the case of baptismal names (given during the ceremony of baptism) as a result of the phenomena that took place in the history of the Romanian language, especially after 1989, when the Romance influence was strongly felt in the Land of Chioar. Using the first names recorded in the civil registries of the Land of Chioar (a multi‑ethnic and multi‑confessional region), this research is, in fact, a synchronic and diachronic analysis of first names, emphasizing the way in which name givers’ attitudes subscribe to the global trend.

Resumen
Anthroponymy mirrors faithfully the features and core values of people considered as individuals or as ethnic groups sharing common traits. Whether we refer to a religious name chosen for one’s child according to one’s personal beliefs, a foreign, trendy name, or an unusual name which ensures the bearer is easily distinguished, all anthroponyms convey a message. Depending on people’s particular way of perceiving integration in a foreign culture, some may choose to give their children names that are specific to their native culture to perpetuate their tradition; others may wish not to reveal their migrant background by naming their offspring in a way that is characteristic to the host culture. The present approach is both synchronic and diachronic. It follows naming practices in contemporary multicultural communities, at the same time illustrating how names are culturally embedded. The grounds for this perspective are provided by the analysis of a wide corpus of anthroponyms existing in sayings and proverbs pertaining to three different languages and cultures: Romanian, English and Italian.

Resumen
The article presents an overview of methods used to analyze German charms as a unique genre of folklore. In comparison to the methodology used to study Slavic charms in Russia, the tradition of systematization and description of similar texts in Germany demonstrates fundamental differences in approaches to analyzing the material. The article identifies the most significant trends in the study of charms observed in recent decades and summarizes some preliminary results. The focus is on publications by German authors who examine specific types of charms from a diachronic or synchronic perspective and explore their typological, sociolinguistic, and textual aspects. Articles by Russian researchers are included for comparison, as they examine German charms in relation to the establishment of European, primarily Balto-Slavic, typological universals. Comparative analysis reveals that Slavic charms are described in great detail, taking into account a variety of plots, motifs, dialectological, and areal-typological features. In contrast, the works of German colleagues are fragmented, lacking practical material and a systematic view of charms as an integral genre of folklore. Currently, significant efforts are being made to digitize handwritten collections of charms from archives that have long been inaccessible to researchers. The availability of large electronic collections of charms will eliminate some of the methodological shortcomings and bring the study of the extensive folklore heritage to a new level.
