Texto completoThe objectives of this thesis are to define novel symbolic representations and distance measures that are suited for time series that can be multivariate and non-stationary. In addition, they should preserve the time information, be interpretable, and fast to compute. We review symbolic representations of time series (that transform a real-valued series into a shorter discrete-valued series), as well as distance measures on time series, strings, and symbolic sequences (that result from a symbolization process). We propose two contributions: ASTRIDE for a data set of univariate time series, and d_{symb} for a data set of multivariate time series. We also developed the d_{symb} playground, an online interactive tool that allows users to apply d_{symb} to their uploaded data. ASTRIDE and d_{symb} are data-driven as they use change-point detection for the segmentation step, then either quantiles or a K-means clustering algorithm for the quantization step. Finally, they apply the general edit distance with custom costs between the resulting symbolic sequences. We show the performance of ASTRIDE compared to 4 other symbolic representations on reconstruction and, when applicable, on classification tasks. For d_{symb}, experiments show how interpretable the symbolization is. Moreover, compared to 9 elastic distances on a clustering task, d_{symb} achieves a competitive performance while being several orders of magnitude faster

Texto completoMalware analysis is a growing research field due to the criticity and variety of assets targeted as well as the increasing implied costs. These softwares frequently use evasion tricks aiming at hindering detection and analysis techniques. Among these, obfuscation intent to hide the program behavior. This thesis studies the potential of Dynamic Symbolic Execution (DSE) for reverse-engineering. First, we propose two variants of DSE algorithms adapted and designed to fit on protected codes. The first is a flexible definition of the DSE path predicate computation based on concretization and symbolization. The second is based on the definition of a backward-bounded symbolic execution algorithm. Then, we show how to combine these techniques with static analysis in order to get the best of them. Finally, these algorithms have been implemented in different tools Binsec/se, Pinsec and Idasec interacting alltogether and tested on several malicious codes and commercial packers. Especially, they have been successfully used to circumvent and remove the obfuscation targeted in real-world malwares like X-Tunnel from the famous APT28/Sednit group

Texto completoClimate change is a constantly debated issue in our society today, and most people seem to have a sense of awareness that we need to act urgently and make major changes in our lifestyle in order to decrease our impact on the climate. Despite the fact that climate change leaves few untouched and many individuals also claim to be both well informed and engaged in the climate issue, the commitment is not always put into action. This environmental sociological quantitative study intends to investigate whether different types of climate messages have an impact on the individual's attitude towards climate change at the time of exposure. The study also examines whether there are differences in the individual's socio-economic background that affect their self-rated climate commitment. In the study 140 respondents with varying background variables participated (age, sex, level of education, place of residence and income). Respondents who were divided into two experimental groups and one control group were asked to answer a digital survey with a quasi-experimental design. The result showed that the different communicative approaches to conveying issues around the climate did not have an impact on the respondents' attitude towards climate change at the time of exposure. There was also no significant difference with respect to the respondents' climate commitment between the background variables residential area and level of education. However, the result showed a significant difference between men and women regarding estimated climate engagement, which is in line with previous research.

Texto completoIn social work clients encounter arts in different contexts as in, for example, daytime activities, employment or job training. The participation in the activities may be voluntary or mandatory. This study examines how specialist crafts tutor work with creative activities in social work and the structures and attitudes necessary to provide conditions for change for the participant. The work places surveyed in this study all used creative methods involving visual arts such as paintings, ceramics, textile and sewing. The study´s purpose is to deepen the understanding of how visual creative activity is used to enable change for users in the field of social work. The activities evaluated in the study all use forms of visual creativity, which include various forms of creativity such as painting, sculpture, textile printing and sewing. The study was conducted based on a qualitative approach and the choice of method was unstructured focus groups with specialist crafts tutors. The method was extended during the research process by a telephone interview. In total, there were two focus group sessions and one telephone interview with a total of six informants. The theoretical framework from which creative activity is highlighted and analyzed is based on symbolic interactionism, where definition of the situation and sympathetic introspection are two key concepts. Other key concepts in the study are Axel Honneth's definition of recognition as well as Martin Buber's interpersonal encounters. The result of the study shows that specialist crafts tutors work contributes to change through structural and pedagogical approaches, which both are permeated by a process-oriented approach where the participant's own processes are central. In the final discussion the potential of creative activities for change within social work is discussed in relation to the theoretical concepts of interpersonal encounters, definition of the situation and symbolic violence to illuminate a choice between two approaches that social pedagogue faces.

Texto completoIn this work we study some dynamical properties of symbolic dynamical systems, with particular emphasis on the role played by the invariant probability measures of such systems. We approach the study of the set of invariant measures from a topological, combinatorial and geometrical point of view. From a topological point of view, we focus on the problem of orbit equivalence and strong orbit equivalence between dynamical systems given by minimal actions of Z, through the study of an algebraic invariant, namely the dynamical dimension group. Our work presents a description of the dynamical dimension group for two particular classes of subshifts: S-adic subshifts and dendric subshifts. From a combinatorial point of view, we are interested in the problem of balance in minimal uniquely ergodic systems given by actions of Z. We investigate the behavior regarding balance for substitutive, S-adic and dendric subshifts. We give necessary conditions for a minimal substitutive system with rational frequencies to be balanced on its factors, obtaining as a corollary the unbalance in the factors of length at least 2 in the subshift generated by the Thue-Morse sequence. Finally, from the geometrical point of view, we investigate the problem of realization of Choquet simplices as sets of invariant probability measures associated to systems given by minimal actions of amenable groups on the Cantor set. We introduce the notion of congruent monotileable amenable group, we prove that every virtually nilpotent amenable group is congruent monotileable, and we show that for a discrete infinite group G with this property, every Choquet simplex can be obtained as the set of invariant measures of a minimal G-subshift

Texto completoService-oriented engineering is an emerging software development paradigm for distributed collaborative applications. Such an application is made up of several entities abstracted as services, each of them being for example a Web application, a Web service, or even a human. The services can be developed independently and are composed to achieve common requirements through interactions among them. Service choreographies define such requirements from a global perspective, based on interactions among a set of participants. This thesis aims to formalize the problems and attempts to develop a framework by which service choreographies can be developed correctly for both top-down and bottom-up approaches. It consists in analyzing the relation between a choreography specification and a choreography implementation at both model level and real implementation level. Particularly, it concerns the composition/decomposition service design, the verification, and the testing of choreography implementation. The first key point of our framework is to support value-passing among services by using symbolic technique and SMT solver. It overcomes false negatives or state space explosion issues due by abstracting or limiting the data domain of value-passing in existing approaches. The second key point is the black-box passive testing of choreography implementation. It does not require neither to access to source codes nor to make the implementation unavailable during the testing process. Our framework is fully implemented in our toolchains, which can be downloaded or used online at address: http://schora.lri.fr

Texto completoThe onset or inception of organizational decline has been largely bypassed in management research over the past two decades, even though understanding this fundamental typology is key to mitigating organizational failure, while also providing important insight regarding how managers respond to phenomena that they may neither expect or understand. Understanding how managers observe, decide, and act in times of uncertainty, and how organizational culture and other factors may shape that environment, are important for scholars and practitioners alike to understand. This dissertation argues that corporate decline has largely been misunderstood from the perspective of onset or initiation; that the manager's decision-making process in times of decline must be considered in relation to the actual causes and factors associated with decline, and that the fundamental definition of organizational decline must be revised in light of advances in our understanding in management over the past three decades. This qualitative empirical descriptive study reviews literature regarding organizational decline with emphasis on the onset of decline, presents an equation for understanding a firm's propensity for decline, provides a revised definition of organizational decline, and examines the decision-making process of management when faced with decline based on symbolic interactionism theory.

Texto completoThe thesis focuses on Bolivian Indians who are assimilated into ethnic groups as one of many consequences of the colonial past. An understanding of the complexity of this construction draws from disciplines such as Anthropology, Archaeology, History, Sociology, in an effort to expose the power relations behind the construction. Departing from written sources and the general belief that the area would lodge the most ancient of such Indians, the Uru from Lake Poopó, a specific location has been selected in the Oruro province of the mid Bolivian highlands. The province is named after this people. The identity of the Uru people has been established by reference to other Indians in the Bolivian Andes known as the Aymara or the Quechua. Colonial accounts written by the Spanish conquerors, including priests, soldiers and commoners, as well as modern sources are discussed and analysed. The fieldwork combines archaeological and anthropological methods. Finally, the importance of multidisciplinary approaches is discussed in an effort to contribute to an understanding of multi-cause phenomena in this case the constructed ethnic identity of the Uru people.

Texto completoBackground: Exposure to household air pollution from cooking fires using biomass fuels (e.g., wood, charcoal, dung) is a leading cause of death and disability worldwide. Household air pollution (HAP) is one of the greatest environmental health risks in low-income and middle-income countries where the majority of people use biomass fuels to cook and heat their homes each day. Worldwide, approximately three billion people cook with biomass fuels; most often, these people cook inside homes with poor ventilation and use traditional stoves without chimneys. Even when clean-burning stoves and fuels are introduced in communities using HAP-producing cooking systems, adoption of these systems is often limited, and the use of clean-burning systems is not exclusive or sustained. To date, despite the need to understand behaviors related to smoke from cooking and heating sources, few investigators have used a behavioral theory or framework as a foundation for their investigation.
Methods: This qualitative exploratory study using open-ended interviews was conducted in Aleto Wondo, a rural area in southern Ethiopia. This research used grounded theory methodology and the theory of symbolic interaction to investigate the symbolic meaning that motivates actions related to exposures to household air pollution from cooking fire smoke. The target population was women who had children in the home and who primarily used biomass fuels for cooking.
Results: Themes that emerged during the analysis process and that are grounded in the data were (a) Awareness, Knowledge, and Interpretation; (b) Traditional Way; (c) Perceived Powerless and Lack of Agency; (d) Opportunities for Clarification and Education; (e) Access and Poverty; and (f) God’s Will. These themes summarized the major factors in the participants’ social world—factors that influence the participant’s symbolic meanings and interpretations that affected actions related to smoke from cooking fires.
Conclusions: Using the theoretical and methodological tools of grounded theory and symbolic interaction helped delineate how the themes identified in this research may each interrelate. Relative to household kitchen fire smoke exposure, human action is not overpoweringly affected by a single factor (e.g., God’s will, gender roles) Relative to household kitchen fire smoke exposure, human action cannot be ascribed to a single factor (e.g., God’s will, gender roles) or even a unique combination of known factors. These factors can be considered immutable or mutable based on an individual’s symbolic meanings and interpretive processes.
