Sydney/Vienna is a historical analysis of the cultural connections and movements of artists, artworks and arts professionals between Australia and Austria through the cities of Sydney and Vienna. Though often uncharted, European artists have for a long time been influential in shaping Australia’s artistic identity, and the Austrians present a significant chapter in the history of Australian art. The subject developed whilst I was on a student exchange at the Akademie der bildenden Künste in Vienna, a valuable experience that made me question the history I was stepping into. The research into this rich legacy has also informed my own position as an emerging artist from a culturally diverse Sydney art world. The chronological tracing of the history exposes a rich variation of contexts underpinning artistic communications between the two countries. To conclude, the paper includes a section about my own studio work, and the influences present on my practice as a result of the exchange. For examination I presented The Vienna Diaries, a series of paintings based on small collages, made daily over a thirty-five day period while living in Vienna. The exhibition took place from September 21st – 23rd, 2017 at Sydney College of the Arts, Rozelle.

Background: Acute pancreatitis (AP) has a mortality of 30% in severe cases. Major causes worldwide are gallstones and alcohol misuse. The first aim was to characterise the aetiology, epidemiology and outcomes for patients with AP in Western Sydney (WS). The second aim was to explore pathogenesis of AP and identify potential biomarkers of severe AP using RNA sequencing. Methods: 1) A retrospective cohort analysis of 932 patients with AP presenting to 4 tertiary hospitals in WS was performed. Data from medical records was analysed using SPSS software 2) A RNA sequencing study was performed in a separate cohort of 84 patients with AP (mild=55, moderately severe=19, severe=10) from 2 tertiary hospitals in WS. RNA sequencing was performed on peripheral venous blood collected within 24h of presentation to hospital and data analysis conducted using DESeq2 and Ingenuity Pathway Analysis software. Results: The majority of patients had gallstone AP (40%). 11.1% had severe AP and mortality was 1%. Females were less likely to develop severe AP. There was a failure to comply with guidelines for early management of AP. RNA sequencing identified 1914 differentially expressed genes (DEG) in severe AP compared to moderately severe and mild AP. Lipocalin 2, IL10 and olfactomedin 4 are potential biomarkers for severe AP and pathways dysregulated in severe AP had immunological and mitochondrial functions. There were 1468 DEG between females and males with AP and pathways unique to females were involved in B cell function. There were no DEG between the different aetiological groups. Conclusion: The majority of patients have mild AP with a low risk of mortality. T cell suppression and mitochondrial dysfunction are important pathways in severe AP. We demonstrated clear differences in the pathophysiology of AP between genders, with women demonstrating up-regulation of B cell functions. The differences in clinical outcomes between genders in AP may be due to underlying immune system differences.

The research was undertaken in the Western Sydney region, which is the largest expanding population in Australia, and is regularly defined as a socio-economically disadvantaged region, therefore, an important factor within this study is the issue of class determinants. The paper explores the youth generated cultural practice of graffiti, skateboarding, street machining, and street dancing. These creative practices challenge traditional notions of culture and the arts, however the young people also employ strategies of an aesthetic nature in their creative process. Youth generated cultures are actively engaged in criticism through the use of instrumentalist aesthetics such as Monroe Beardsley describes. The thesis proposes that youth generated cultures have, in a united and structured manner, provided for themselves a framework of economic and pedagogical support that has afforded them a place within the cultural mainstream without the recognition or approval of mainstream cultural establishments. It is argued that these particular youth generated cultures are not rebellious or destructive subcultures, that they are creative in nature and have been established primarily to produce and display their creative cultures. Youth agency is essential to the character of these youth generated cultures and it is this agency that is under challenge from the cultural hegemony. The convict’s environmental, spatial and administrative knowledge of early colonial Sydney was far richer than is generally acknowledged. Not only were the convicts thinking and feeling individuals transported to a foreign land against their will, but the natural world was, in a very real way, all around them. Through their work, their use of their ‘own time’, leisure, and in their pursuit of prohibited activities, the convicts were actively perceiving and reacting to the environment and developed their own understanding of landscapes of the colony and its hinterland. The colony became a place of places that were intimately known and understood, threaded through with action, imagination and cultural designs. The convicts had an internalized consciousness of the spaces and places of the early colony and its hinterland.

Doctor of Philosophy<br>Abstract There has been a significant change in Australian consumer behaviour with an increase in time and money spent, in suburban ethnic business districts (named in this study as ethniehubs). But little attention has been paid to the role of ethnically owned stores in generating income within ethniehubs. In fact, there is still a lack of research conducted by architects and planners about the way in which the physical environment of ethnic stores in ethniehubs attract consumers, and the way in which the physical environment affect consumers’ behaviour. Therefore, the study is important in filling the current gap in literature. For this Sydney-based study, two separate ethniehubs are used for data collection - Leichhardt with a strong Italian character, and Cabramatta with identifiably Vietnamese attributes. The goal of this study is to find out how the ethniehubs have developed and how consumers behave in ethniehubs. The present study derived from architecture and planning, also addresses the effect of the physical environment of ethnic stores on consumers behaviour at both store and ethniehub level. The research has several questions to answer. How have Sydney’s ethniehubs developed? How do ethniehubs influence consumer behaviour? More specifically: What attracts consumers to ethniehubs? Who are these consumers? What do they purchase? Does the ethnic background of consumers influence their behaviour in ethniehubs? The data are collected through observation, survey and focus group discussions of consumers at both Leichhardt and Cabramatta. The findings of this research have a number of implications for urban planning, i.e tourism, place branding and place marketing. By understanding the importance of the physical environment of ethnic stores, more considered architectural design and interior decoration will ensure that their most highly valued aspects are reinforced. This study also contributes to the knowledge of urban planning of ethniehub shopping precincts and ethnic stores decorations each of which has important social and economic consequences.

In the last two decades Sydney's traditional hotels have been subjected to increasing pressure of rising land values and diminishing returns and many hotels have been either
demolished or adapted for other uses. At the close of the 19th Century, there were about 300 hotels in Central sydney. By the late 1920s this number was almost halved and from 1969 to 1989 a further 46 hotels in Central Sydney have ceased trading. In 1989, there are fewer than 75 hotels in continuing use in the Central Business District, according to the Australian Hotels Association. If the rate of closure and demolition over the last ninety years is extrapolated, Sydney will lose nearly all its traditional hotels within 40 years and many of those that remain are at risk of being altered and emasculated to a point at which their cultural significance is greatly diminished. Many journalists over the years have lamented the loss of their favourite boozer, or bloodhouse, prompting the Heritage Council to commission a survey, in 1985, of all existing, adapted and demolished hotels in the Sydney Central Business District.
This thesis continues the Heritage Council's initiative and documents and analyses a clearly identifiable group of hotels within a defined geographical area.
The historical research and the documentation of demolished, adapted and threatened hotels leads to a statement of the hotels' cultural significance with respect to social, historic, architectural, urban, technological and associated values.

Aboriginal glass artefacts (AGAs) have become the ‘type fossil’ for recognizing post-contact sites in countries with colonial pasts. Whether such reliance on AGAs is a valid development is contentious as the identification of these artefacts is ambiguous. This uncertainty is amplified in densely populated urban environments such as Sydney. This thesis addresses the identification of these artefacts within this region. Technological characteristics of Sydney’s AGAs and methodological issues in the recording of these artefacts have been analysed. A review of the patterns within this data has revealed how the identification issue has been managed in the past and how it may be improved. A review and evaluation of previous ‘criteria for identification’ has also revealed a refined approach to the identification and categorization of AGAs within Sydney and beyond. Also, cross-cultural interactions have been characterized as affected by the unique and diverse nature of the moving frontier in this region.

This thesis examines the career of Arthur Baldwinson (1908-1969), a Sydney-based modernist architect. It argues that Baldwinson was a central figure in the development of a modernist domestic architecture in Australia from the late 1930s until the late 1950s through his practice as well as his activist role in the development of the Australian design reform and arts organisations: the Modern Architecture Research Group (MARS); the Designers for Industry Association of Australia (DIAA); and the Contemporary Art Society (CAS). It is further argued that Baldwinson designed and built two of Sydney's first authentically modernist houses before the 1939-45 War and that his subsequent development and refinement of a regional methodology for modernism in Sydney's domestic architecture is at the centre of the later regionalist styles of the late 1950s and early 1960s currently described as the

The Hmong, a minority group from Laos, began arriving in Australia in 1976, having fled their country after the Pathet Lao (Lao communists) came into power in May, 1975. Little has been written on the Hmong in Australia but one survey
conducted in 1987 on the Hmong community in Sydney identified it as socioeconomically disadvantaged (Lee 1987). At the same time, studies from the United States were discovering a significant problem of poor health status and
unsatisfactory health care behaviour within various Hmong refugee communities in that country (Bliatout 1988a; Deinard and Dunnigan 1987; Scott 1982; Strand and Jones 1983). This study aims to examine the health care behaviour of Hmong in Sydney, and related socio-economic issues, in part to discover whether Hmong in Sydney exhibit similar health care behaviour and health status to Hmong in the United States. It will therefore both provide basic information on the Hmong in Australia, and specifically focus on the health care behaviour of Hmong in Sydney and, secondly, compare this with situations in the United States.

A number of international studies reveal high prevalence rates of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) within homeless populations. Recent research on PTSD indicates that cognitive responses to trauma are critical in determining who develops the disorder. In Australia, a number of studies indicate exceptionally high rates of trauma experience among homeless adults, yet PTSD has not been investigated in this cohort. Therefore, the primary aim of this project was to improve understanding of PTSD and related cognitions in a sample of homeless adults in Sydney. The project attempts to determine the prevalence of PTSD and its onset in relation to homelessness (Study One) and also explores the role of cognitions in PTSD (Study Two). The sample consisted of seventy homeless men and women aged 18 to 73 years, who were randomly sampled through eight homeless services. A computer-assisted face-to-face structured clinical interview was conducted for each participant. The majority of the sample stated that they had experienced at least one traumatic event in their lifetime (98.2%). The twelve-month prevalence of PTSD was higher among homeless adults in Sydney in comparison to the Australian general population (41.1% versus 1.5%). In 59.1% of cases, the onset of PTSD was found to have occurred before the age of the first reported homeless episode. In a comparison of those with and without a current diagnosis of PTSD, it was found that those with PTSD scored significantly higher overall on measures of posttraumatic cognitions and early maladaptive schemas. In particular, this group scored higher on schemas that centre on the world being entirely dangerous and the self being totally inept. A mediational analysis showed that when trauma and mental health care were controlled, the relationship between early maladaptive schemas and PTSD symptom severity was mediated by posttraumatic cognitions. It was concluded that homeless adults in Sydney frequently experience trauma and PTSD, which typically precedes homelessness. It was also concluded that among homeless adults, posttraumatic cognitions and early maladaptive schemas appear to play an important role in PTSD and may be associated with symptom severity. These findings have implications for public policy on homelessness and mental health, homeless service provision, PTSD theory, and PTSD treatment for homeless adults.

This practice-based thesis questions how interactive media artworks affect the way audiences engage with the past. It considers contemporary art’s ‘impulse’ towards archives within the context of the age of Big Data. At a time when society is generating more information than ever before, this thesis explores how artists working with interactive databases can contribute novel systems and aesthetic experiences in order to carve new ways into and through archives. This thesis brings into dialogue practical and theoretical discoveries made along the journey of reimagining an oral history archive through the system of an immersive responsive installation. It argues that interactive artworks can allow for an embodied, exploratory and generative engagement with archival material. Further, it suggests that such processual and emergent accounts of the past are appropriate ways of modelling the world and its archived traces in a digital era characterised by swathes of stored data and fluctuating information flows. As critically interdisciplinary work across the fields of new media art and history, this research also suggests the value of such experimental methodologies for rethinking traditional approaches to archives with a view to generating aesthetic and affective, rather than factual and textual, engagements with the past.

Fin-de-Siècle Vienna was considered a heartland of European modernity. One of the aspects of this modernity was high levels of acculturation and participation of the Jewish population in many aspects of the Viennese culture. The acculturation process involved redefinitions of Jewish identity including changes in religious practices, identification with majority political and social groups, intermarriage and even conversion and continued in the interwar period. This thesis focuses on three case studies of Gertrud Bodenwieser, Margaret Michaelis and Eric Cuckson, illustrating these developments in dance, photography and political action and industry respectively. It analyses their careers in interwar Vienna, traces their responses and flight after the Nazi Anschluss and their creation of new lives in Australia. It seeks to place these protagonists in the context of modernity and cultural transference in their respective fields in Australia. The contributions of all three have been preserved in the Papers of Gertud Bodenwieser, a key archive located in the National Library of Australia. This study also examines the role of networking in assisting the three protagonists in creating their new lives as well as the complexity of Jewish identity and the ways this manifested itself in the histories of these three acculturated Jews whose cultural development took place in interwar Vienna.

This thesis is the first substantive analysis of unregistered proprietary horse racing (or pony racing, as it was popularly known) in Sydney, an extremely popular form of the sport conducted weekly or more frequently between 1888 and 1942. However, a number of researchers working on its periphery have contributed commentary and judgements to a discourse on it that has existed since the establishment of the Sydney Turf Club (STC) in 1943. Their writings have created an orthodox view of the sport that suggests inter alia it was a cultural expression of a ‘needy and greedy’ element of the working class and that its constituency was excluded from that of the racing of the Establishment, conducted by the Australian Jockey Club (AJC). This orthodoxy also holds unregistered racing was subject to endemic corruption, haphazardly conducted, inexpensive to attend, provided poor money and was in general a burlesque of AJC racing. The thesis engages this discourse and tests the tenets of the orthodoxy through examination or re-examination of relevant primary sources, including parliamentary papers, contemporary newspapers and journals, race books and other documents, administrative records, photographs, and the memoirs and transcripts of oral history provided by human participants.

This thesis provides the first comprehensive assessment of the economic viability of Australia's Sydney rock oyster industry and forms the bases for future policy and industry management recommendations. In the four separate studies of the thesis, the socio-economic profile of the industry, the market price formation dynamics within Australia's oyster market, efficiency and productivity levels and the potential impact of climate change and market dynamics on the industry's future revenue were investigated. Findings of this project suggest, for example, that market dynamics may pose a greater thread to the future development of this industry than direct effect from climate change.

The Neighbourhood Centres (NCs) in Sydney, Australia, were established to encourage forms of local control and resident participation and to provide a range of activities to build, strengthen and support local communities and marginalised groups. This thesis is concerned with exploring the personal conceptions, passions and frameworks, as well as the political and professional identities, of activists and community workers in these NCs. It also explores stories of practice and of how these subjective experiences have been shaped through the discourses around the NCs, some of which include feminism, environmentalism, multiculturalism and social justice. The following key research questions encouraged stories of community practice: What do the terms empowerment, participation, community service and citizenship mean for community organisation? What did community workers and organisers wish for when they became involved in these community organisations? What happened to the oppositional knowledges and dissent that are part of the organisational histories? Foucault’s concept of governmentality is used to explore the possibility that these NCs are also sites of ‘government through community’. This theoretical proposition questions taken-for-granted assumptions about community development and empowerment approaches. It draws on a willingness of the research participants to take up postmodern and poststructuralist theories. ‘Practising place’ emerges in the research as a description of a particular form of activism and community work associated with these inner city Sydney NCs. The central dimensions of ‘practising place’ include: a commitment to identity work; an openness to exploring diverse and fluid citizenship and identity formations; and the use of local knowledges to develop a critique of social processes. Another feature of ‘practising place’ is that it involves an analysis of the operation of power that extends beyond structuralist explanations of how to bring about social change and transform social relations. The research has deconstructed assumptions about empowerment, community participation, community organisations and community development, consequently another way of talking about the work of small locally based community organisations emerges. This new way of talking builds upon research participants’ understandings of power and demonstrates the utility of applying a poststructural analysis to activist and community work practices. Overall the research suggests that if activists and community workers are to work with new understandings of the operation of power, then the languages and social practices associated with activist and community work traditions need to be constantly and reflexively analysed and questioned.

Drawing on in-depth interviews, participant observation and my experiences of working with young homeless people in refuges, in this thesis I develop an analysis which identifies some key spatial practices through which young people negotiate the field of homelessness in inner-city Sydney. The particular contribution of this work is to consider homelessness in terms of a theorised understanding of the broader role of place within homelessness, rather than in terms of the immediacy of cause or solution. While acknowledging the importance of the large body of work which has focused on the structural causes of homelessness and the need for a clear policy-oriented definition of homelessness, I develop an alternative agenda for a focus on young homeless people's struggles to feel 'in place' and 'at home'. These struggles throw into relief the need to understand young people???s homelessness in terms of a search, not just for a place to stay, but for a place to belong. Utilising the rich body of work which explores the important relation of place and subjectivity, I connect young people???s experiences of place within homelessness with the broader social and phenomenological concepts of ???displacement??? and ???implacement???. In particular, I focus on the spatial relations through which young people construct and organise their daily paths and begin to make sense of their often painful and chaotic lives and their fears about the future. I contextualise their fragile experiences of being somewhere in a broader spatial structure of constant movement and grief and feelings of alienation from the wider community. I consider the enduring role of past homes in their continuing struggle to piece together a way of ???being at home??? both in terms of drawing together a network of physical places of safety and in terms of experiencing a sense of acceptance, recognition and rootedness through place. I point to the critical need to include broader understandings of both home and homelessness in addressing the displacement which shapes the experience of homelessness for young people and impacts on the success of immediate measures developed to respond to it.

The concentration of human population and economic activity in cities has relied on the development of urban energy systems, which bring energy to the city and distribute it to points of end use within it. Over the past century, electro-technology has come to dominate urban energy systems throughout the developed world. This process has been imperfectly documented and analysed, because the relationships between electricity and the energy service markets and local political frameworks within which each instance of urban electrificaiton has taken place have generally been neglected. -- This thesis presents electrification as an historical change in the urban energy system. It identifies the most important influences on urban energy demand and on the organisation of energy supply, and traces their interaction before the introduction of electro-technology, then from the beginning of electrification in the 1880s to its completion in the 1980s. -- Urban electrification is best observed and understood by following its course within a single city. Sydney is well suited to such an analysis, since it is highly electrified and encompasses within its two hundred year history all the major energy technologies of the past millenium. During the first century of its existence, it developed distinctively urban markets for transportation, street lighting, commercial, industrial and residential energy services. These were revolutionised by steam and by gas, the first specifically urban energy technology. -- The thesis examines how each energy form in turn gained a foothold in the Sydney energy system, diffused through it and spread beyond it to the rest of the state of New South Wales. It analyses long term trends in each of the various urban energy markets, and draws parallels in the pattern of succession of supply technologies. It demonstrates that these patterns were repeated with the introduction of electricity and, in the 1970s, by its emerging successors. -- During Sydney's second century each of its energy markets was electrified in turn, while its separate electricity supply systems coalesced into a unified grid serving the entire metropolis, and extending later into the rest of the state. Largely as a result of political circumstances in the 1880s, when electric lighting was first introduced, the municipal electricity supply organisations acquired considerable influence and autonomy, and resisted the later attempts of state governments to co-ordinate their development. --The electrification of the Sydney and NSW energy systems had largely run its course by the late 1970s. Electricity supply had exhausted the economies of scale and technological development which had given it an advantage over other fuels. It had saturated the urban energy markets, and was facing new competitors in the form of natural gas and more efficient utilisation technologies. The inquiry begins from the design challenge of an architectural competition for the design of a visitors' center in Sydney Australia. The international design competition set by AlA, ASCA and DuPont Glass Industry, is asking for a building, addressed to visitors of Sydney, that represents the "Australian culture" and can provide general information on ways to explore the continent. The design exploration navigates through several descriptions and approaches, on the city and the continent, conducted by a variety of intellectuals, writers, reporters, and Architects. The hints collected, enrich the design diary, and formulate the design process. "Transparency" is therefore used both as a means of looking through design as a tool of communication, research and representation, as well as a structural demand set by the competition. The design artifact navigates the design process towards the formulation of a specific proposal answering the primary demands; nevertheless in the research the focus is given on the experience of processing the design problem. Structured in a series of episodes, the design diary that follows, incorporates the research into a series of manifested notes on the issue of architectural conception. Since the 1990s, cultural geographers have used a variety of methodologies to track the physical migration of queers toward inner-city space and explored the wider cultural imaginaries that have grown up around this phenomenon. This thesis engages with recent theoretical accounts of metronormativity, or the idea that queer subjectivities are best served by urban environments. Invoking Scott Herring’s concept of ‘queer infrastructure’ and Karen Tongson’s account of queer exurban performance cultures in Greater Los Angeles, I consider engagements of intra-urban space in contemporary queer art by Sydney-based artists and collectives. This research departs from longstanding and recent Australian critiques of suburbia, which tend to frame the suburbs through either class homogeneity or ethnic multiculturalism, and demonstrates how queer-identified artists negotiate the apparent disconnection between the queer and the suburban in their art practices. Chapters one and two track the emergence and consolidation of queer urban studies as an interdisciplinary field. Chapter three provides a new reading of Sydney’s queer history via a focus on suburban rather than urban cultures. Chapter four looks at how queer exhibition practices in the western and south-western suburbs of Sydney articulate institutional, cultural, and social ecologies that bridge centre and periphery. The subsequent chapters each focus on one artwork: a performance staged in an outer-suburban shopping arcade that combines vogue, martial arts, and life-history narration; a video work that redeploys infrastructural tropes from a Bronski Beat music video in order to consider the queer trajectory from suburbs to city and back; and another video work that documents a six-hour drive around greater Sydney by a group of eight queer friends. Overall, this thesis illuminates how contemporary queer art practices in Greater Western Sydney reposition queerness as a central part of the suburbs and the suburbs as a central part of queer Sydney.

This thesis explores the performance of small scale cemented soil columns produced using soil mixing with cement resulting from bacterially mediated reactions that precipitate calcium carbonate, a process often referred to as bio-cementation. Bio-cementation has received considerable research attention over the last decade as it has the potential to complement existing ground improvement techniques and mitigate environmental concerns with currently used materials. Previous research has concentrated on pumping and injection techniques because of concerns that bacteria will be unable to survive the stresses associated with industrial mixing processes, however it has been difficult to create uniform bio-cemented soil masses. In this thesis the ureolytic bacterium, Bacillus Megaterium, not previously reported in bio-cementation studies, has been investigated to determine its viability and efficiency as a microbe for mediating the calcite precipitation. It has been found that the highest hydrolysis rate is recorded when calcium concentrations are double the urea concentrations, and that significant amounts of calcite can be precipitated in a single mixing process. Unconfined compressive strength (UCS) tests and a series of triaxial tests have been conducted to quantify the effects of the bio-cementation on the mechanical response. Bender elements mounted in the triaxial cell have also been used to monitor the shear wave velocity during curing and shearing. The results of mechanical tests on the bio-cemented sand have been compared with tests on gypsum cemented and uncemented specimens. It has been found that bio-cementation by mixing produces homogeneous specimens with similar strengths and stiffnesses to the commonly used flushing or injection technique. To assess the performance of in-situ mixed, 38 mm diameter, bio-cemented sand columns a small scale in-situ mixing technique was used to create the model columns. Foundation tests have been performed at 1-g in a cylindrical tank with diameter of 600 mm. A significant improvement was observed in the response of foundations when placed on bio-cemented columns, and this was similar to the improvement from more conventional gypsum cements. These tests confirmed the feasibility of using an in-situ mixing technique with bio-cementation and provided valuable insight into the factors that must be considered in developing field applications. This thesis also has demonstrated repair strategies and techniques to encourage healing and self-healing should damage occur in foundations. Results from tests performed to investigate the ability of biocement to repair cemented soil columns are reported.

Global cities are being reconfigured through multiple transformations. Cities are places of increasing heterogeneity as a result of heightened flows of human mobility, setting the stage for negotiations of strangerhood and intercultural encounter. They are epicentres for new registers of belonging, allegiance and citizenship arising in the context of these broader transitions. Drawing on relational theories of the city and critical readings of urban diversity, this thesis interrogates how multi-ethnic neighbourhoods shape experiences of belonging for migrant inhabitants. It argues that pluralist policies largely attempt to coordinate and contain urban diversity, often leaving yawning fissures between politicised rhetoric and the lived socio-materialities of the city. These processes are particularly evident in the city of Sydney, the preeminent global city in Australia, a ‘nation of immigration’. This study and its analysis offers an alternative to conventional migration studies that privilege the ethnic lens, by applying a place-based approach and a Lefebvrian frame of analysis to residents’ place making practices in a highly diverse, transitional suburb. The research uses urban ethnographic methods, including observation and interviews with migrant residents and local ‘space managers’, to analyse the interactional and sociospatial orders of three suburban public spaces. Drawing on this rich empirical data, the study not only argues that local space is produced at the intersection of spatial practices, regimes of urban governance, and multicultural discourses, but that it is fundamental to understanding migrants’ subjective experience of ‘being at home’ in both local and national space. This approach provides critical insight into the uneven integration of arrivals into collective urban culture, as well as possibilities for generating urban civilities in a unique study of Campsie, New South Wales. If new processes of exclusion are regulating human flows at sovereign borders, it is critically important to also understand how spatial marginalisation unfolds in the intimate spaces of the increasingly diverse and mobile city.

This thesis studies the meaning of cultural significance of place, and is concerned with Circular Quay, Sydney, in an attempt to determine the various aspects which contribute to the area’s cultural significance. It sees the area from a wide variety of viewpoints, and uses the area’s diversity as a catalyst for considerations pertaining to the understanding of place generally. It deals with the growing heritage process which has drawn world-wide attention to the phenomenon of place significance, and attempts to show how this process has led to present place evaluation techniques. It considers the acknowledged tools used in assessing place significance, and explores ways of improving and/or augmenting such tools in order to provide the means for assessing cultural significance of place in the second millennium.
Circular Quay is an unusual place in many respects. It is the oldest (postcolonial) place in the youngest (and last) major colony, situated in the oldest country in the world. Its status as the site of the First Settlement gives rise to divergent viewpoints, and its post-colonial history has exerted more influence on Australian identity than perhaps any other Australian place. Its physical attributes and setting, once appreciated by both European and Aboriginal cultures as constituting an exceptional natural environment, are once again being appreciated, this time as an extraordinary cultural environment, as we approach the year 2000.
Traditional place assessment techniques reside principally in the criteria used to determine whether or not a place possesses a sufficient degree of cultural significance to enable it to be listed in a heritage register. Such criteria have evolved in response to the world’s disappearing heritage, which the various heritage registers attempt to identify so that steps may then be taken to preserve what remains. To date Circular Quay appears on no formal heritage register, although some of the items in the area are listed.
This thesis attempts to show how places like Circular Quay can be assessed for their cultural significance, which at present lies outside the scope of the various criteria, and how modified and/or additional criteria can lead to the inclusion of such places in heritage registers.

Despite being a large community of sojourners making up 30% of the total international student population in Australia (End of Year Summary of International Student Enrolment Data, 2017), Chinese international students’ everyday social experience is severely under-studied. This thesis is a mini ethnographic archive informed by nineteen qualitative interviews and autoethnographic analysis about the marginalities and injustices Chinese international students face in their everyday negotiation of dating and intimacies. Findings discuss a range of issues including clashing intergenerational expectations, peer marginalisation, navigating multicultural Australia, racial depersonalisation in the dating scene, "yellow fever" as a form of hermeneutical injustice, ambiguous sexual consent, domestic violence in de facto relationships (queer and straight), and the impacts/implications of legal status within abusive relationships and the dating pool. This thesis stands as the first qualitative study to inform the vacuum of knowledge about Chinese international students' intimate social activities in Australia. Meanwhile, it documents an authentic fragment of reality about the Chinese sojourners community that is often opaque to the public eye and mystified in mainstream Australian media discourses. Despite structural disempowerment, this thesis demonstrates why Chinese sojourners are not trapped in a passive victimhood, they are individual life planners developing the best survival strategies they can manage with the limited resources they have.

The aim of this research is to understand the socio-economic development of a metropolitan region in Sydney through an analysis of regional innovative activity. South
West Sydney, a major growth region within Sydney, includes the Local Government Areas (LGAs) of Liverpool, Campbelltown, Camden and Wollondilly. This region has absorbed 25% of Sydney’s population growth in the period from 1991-2001. Although South West Sydney has experienced rapid population growth, this has not been matched by associated employment growth. In some sectors such as business services employment growth has been minimal in the previous decade, this is particularly the case in Liverpool, the regional centre of South West Sydney. Population growth is estimated to continue at the current rate (in excess of 5% per annum) for at least the next fifteen years. In this environment, local government authorities in the region are seeking ways in which to develop the regional economy of South West Sydney and increase the amount of sustainable employment commensurably with current population and labour force increases. The role of innovative activity has a central place in economic development. This thesis uses a ‘systems of innovation’ (SI) approach to examine innovative activity in the South West Sydney region. SI understands innovation as a socially embedded process of transforming ideas and knowledge into novel products, processes and services through the processes of learning and searching. The approach recognises that innovative activity is determined by various actors (firms and institutions) and the interactivity between these actors and the cumulative base of knowledge in which they operate. The Regional Innovations Systems (RIS) framework develops from an acknowledgement that innovation is primarily a geographically bounded phenomenon. The RIS approach sees that specific local resources are important in determining and encouraging the innovative activities carried out by local firms and hence, the competitiveness of these areas. The RIS literature provides two fields of understanding of what constitutes a regional innovation system. The first takes the global examples of highly innovative regions such as Silicon Valley and Route 128 in the United States of America (Saxenian 1994), South West England (Cooke and Morgan 1998), Baden Wurttemberg in Germany (Cooke 2001; Braczyk, Cooke et al. 2004), Northern Italy (Piore and Sabel 1984) and in Australia, the North Ryde corridor (Searle and Pritchard 2005). These regions represent ‘ideal’ or ‘star’ RIS, with highly specialised and networked clusters of firms, many forms of supporting regional infrastructure, and high levels of interactivity. The second and emerging field understands RIS to be in existence in all regions and individual RIS are identified on a scale from weak to strong (Wiig and Wood 1995; Cooke and Morgan 1998; Cooke 2001). This second stream includes the analysis of regions seeking to encourage innovative activity by using the RIS approach to examine their local resources and connectedness. It seeks to determine how not only local resources but also their connectedness could be enhanced to increase firm competitiveness.
The innovation systems represented in the ����ideal���� regions are largely a world away from what is available and what is necessary in the encouragement of RIS in most other regions. However, the conceptual framework for examining and interpreting RIS is derived from the analysis of these ‘ideal’ regions. This framework does not provide for measurement and effective interpretation of a range of activities that may be present in less exceptional regions.
This research contributes to this endeavour by providing a method that allows for interpretation of a wider range of innovation activities through the analysis of knowledge intensive services activities (KISA). The focus on knowledge gathering, particularly through the KISA analysis, provides an examination of the relationship between innovation, learning and knowledge, much more so than more traditional measures of innovative activity e.g. patents and research and development (RandD) expenditure. KISA analysis is an emerging field of innovation research. KISA are closely linked to firm innovative activity (OECD 2006) and through an analysis of regional KISA usage, an understanding of innovation and knowledge activities within the region can be constructed. This analysis applies equally across various regions and provides an opportunity to guide regional economic development policy intervention at the local government level in South West Sydney.

Traces of this language, funtionally lost in two generations, remain in words such as 'dingo' and 'woomera' that entered the English language, and in placenames such as 'Cammeray' and 'Parramatta'. Various First Fleeters, and others, compiled limited wordlists in the vicinity of the harbour and further afield, and in the early 1900s the surveyor R.H. Mathews documented the remnants of the Dharug language. Only as recently as 1972 were the language notebooks of William Dawes, who was noted by Watkin Tench as having advanced his studies 'beyond the reach of competition', uncovered in a London university library. The jottings made by Dawes, who was learning as he went along, are incomplete and parts defy analysis. This thesis documents the early history of the City of Sydney Eisteddfod from its beginning in 1933 until it recessed in 1941 for the duration of the Pacific War. Eisteddfods had long been commonplace in Australia, but this competition began for political rather than cultural reasons in 1932, when organisers of the Harbour Bridge celebrations decided that since the spectacular edifice had made Sydney an icon on the world map, the city needed to cultivate a more sophisticated image. In observing events that led to its establishment, the project looks at the technological revolution of the 1920s and the social upheaval of the jazz age. This thesis observes that Sydney competition was Welsh only in name and grew from the political roots of the high and lowbrow debates that had come to divide society. In examining these issues, this thesis focuses on the Sydney contest, the talent that rose from its stages and the cultural revival that exploded in its wake. Since the great Iranian revolution of 1978-79, there has been a significant increase in Islamic consciousness and activity in Muslim communities across the globe. As a phenomenon it has become known as ???Islamic revivalism???. Its hallmark is a return to Islamic origins, the fundamentals of the faith embodied in the Qur???an and the sunnah (sayings and practices of Prophet Muhammad). Contemporary Islamic revivalism has its roots in Muslim responses to European colonialism and imperialism at the turn of the twentieth century, when the darker sides of modernity began to reveal themselves in what was perceived as less than desirable social, cultural, economic, and political conditions of many Muslim communities and societies. Islamic revivalism has constantly featured in Islamic history and is by no means a new phenomenon. What distinguishes contemporary Islamic revivalism from earlier revivalisms is its complex multifacetedness as a defensive reaction to a new epoch of modernity described in revivalist circles as jahiliyah (ignorance). This thesis argues there is a central relationship between modernity and Islamic revivalism. Using in-depth interviews and participant observation techniques this study is an ethnography of the Tablighi Jamaat (Preaching Party), a transnational Islamic revivalist movement active in Sydney. It also seeks to locate the Tablighi Jamaat in the spectrum of Australian Islam. The principal argument of the thesis is that contemporary Islamic revivalism is a defensive reaction to modernity. Contrary to popular belief it neither constitutes an antimodernity nor does it seek to destroy modernity. Rather, it highlights that Muslims as adherents to a revealed tradition - Islam - are in a serious state of crisis. They are confronted with both material crisis and the threat of losing their faith and identity in modernity. Through a study of the Tablighi Jamaat the thesis argues that contemporary Islamic revivalism is, therefore, an attempt to rescue Muslims from their modern malaise through selective use of modern ideological and technical means.

Sydney, in common with most other major Australian cities, is growing rapidly, with consequent infrastructure pressures. The proposition herein is that requirements for infrastructure will vary with the location and nature of particular residential developments. This research is concerned with road (i) provision and (ii) use. With regard to road provision, it was contended that the very high costs of inner suburban road provision would generate high attributable costs of roads and that the greater distances involved in fringe development would also generate high road provision costs, despite the relatively low per unit costs involved leaving the middle distance suburbs the cheapest in which to provide road infrastructure. It was initially contended that road use costs per household would grow with increasing distance from Sydney’s Central Business District. To test the above, a variety of case studies of recent and current residential developments within Sydney were examined. The broad costs associated with the selected developments were applied to three future scenarios for Sydney’s development over the forthcoming twenty years. Those scenarios were (i) a continuation of current growth patterns, (ii) more intense development of inner and middle suburbs, and (iii) greater emphasis on fringe growth. Four broad conclusions are drawn: 1. The costs of road use (typically borne mostly by households) are significantly greater than the costs of road provision (typically borne by governments and the private sector) for the urban area as a whole. 2. An emphasis on fringe development will incur substantially greater costs for the community as a whole with regard to use. 3. The costs of road provision will be minimised with a development pattern that emphasises inner and middle suburban development. 4. In sum overall road costs will be minimised with an emphasis on more intense development in inner and middle suburban locations.

In recent years urban scholarship has shown a keen interest in the processes and experiences of dispossession unfolding in cities of the Global North and South. Inspired by this work this thesis develops a framework to analyse dispossession within a settler colonial city that does not fall into these neat binaries. In my analysis I bring a political economy lens of state power into dialogue with critical legal geographies of property, identifying diverse forms of dispossession that unfold in the wake of state force, via the dismantling and attenuation of urban dwellers’ official and unofficial property relations. I apply this conceptual framework to two cases of state-sponsored dispossession in contemporary Sydney – the first involving the privatisation and redevelopment of public land and Aboriginal owned land in the inner-city, while the second entails the compulsory acquisition of private land from individual property owners for a large infrastructure project. Firstly, I identify the different legal forms of state authority through which dispossession is implemented, the cultural and economic logics of improvement used to justify dispossession or make a political case for the projects, and the bureaucratic forms of compensation, domination and coercion used to pacify and generate compliance. Secondly, I analyse dispossession in the weakening and extinguishing of property relations of mastery and membership, where the character of state force in concert with the varied legal, social and cultural arrangements that ‘hold up’ property, shape urban dwellers experiences and anticipations of dispossession. While both cases involve the expropriation of formal legal property, my analysis adopts a relational approach that ‘opens’ up the concept of property.
