Resumen
Stone matrix asphalt (SMA) and Superpave® represent relatively new mix design technologies in the United States. Therefore, a condition survey was conducted of mixes that had been in service for several years to evaluate the long-term performance of SMA and Superpave projects. This study is a follow-up to a 1995 review of SMA projects and a 1998 review of Superpave projects. Both SMA and Superpave are acknowledged to be rut-resistant mixes, and this resistance was shown to be the case during this project review. However, a significant amount of cracking occurred early in the life of some of these mixtures. Overall, the SMA mixtures appeared to be more durable than the Superpave mixtures evaluated. The SMA mixtures have been in place about 2½ years longer than the Superpave mixtures, but the overall condition is about the same. Some of the primary conclusions from the survey are as follows: both SMA and Superpave mixtures were shown to be rut-resistant even when placed on facilities with high traffic volume; much of the observed cracking, especially load cracking, appeared to be more related to problems other than mix design or material properties; and SMA mixtures can be expected to last longer than Superpave mixtures before reaching the same condition level.

Resumen
Asphalt content, voids, and mat density quality control–quality assurance data were collected for selected Marshall and Superpave mixes during 1997 and for selected Superpave mixes during 1998 and 1999. Analyses indicate that the accuracies and variabilities of asphalt content measurements for Marshall and Superpave mixes are comparable. However, analyses also indicate that the accuracies and variabilities of voids and mat density measurements are not comparable. Moreover, variabilities for Superpave mixes are much higher, and measurements for Superpave mixes are more off target than those for Marshall mixes. The effects of gyratory compactor use, mix design range for an equivalent single-axle load, and maximum aggregate size were investigated to explain the observed differences. Although few consistent trends were observed, all these factors seem to affect the variabilities and accuracies of air voids and mat densities of Superpave mixes.

Resumen
During 1994 and 1995, asphalt overlay performance problems in the form of disintegration, rutting, and raveling were experienced in the Atlanta District of the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT). An investigation of the damage by TxDOT engineers in Atlanta identified the cause as extreme moisture susceptibility of asphalt mixtures containing locally available crushed gravel. A task force was assembled to identify tests and specifications to allow use of local gravel aggregates while, at the same time, precluding future moisture damage problems. The resources of the South Central Superpave Center were mobilized to assess whether Superpave mix design tests and criteria would have identified the mixtures as troublesome in ways other than moisture sensitivity. Because TxDOT already uses a moisture damage test very similar to the Superpave moisture sensitivity evaluation, no Superpave moisture damage tests were conducted. The Superpave mix design evaluation indicated that one or more Superpave aggregate tests, gradation requirements, and volumetric and compaction properties would have precluded use of the materials.

Resumen
Asphalt-aggregate mixture sensitivity has long been recognized for its potential negative impact on performance if variables including the asphalt content (AC) and the percent that passes the 0.075-mm sieve (p0.075) are not carefully controlled during construction. Typical production standard deviations for AC and p0.075 are 0.3 and 0.9 percent, respectively. This mixture sensitivity analysis shows that variations of this magnitude can result in significant changes in coarse Superpave mixture volumetrics. Three coarse mixtures designed for the WesTrack project were examined, including the original coarse mixture and the replacement mixture. The coarse mixture was most sensitive to both AC and p0.075, contradicting the relatively worse performance of the replacement mixture. The replacement mixture was relatively insensitive to p0.075, and the third mixture was extremely sensitive to reductions in p0.075. Results also suggest that mixture sensitivity may affect optimum AC by up to 1.0 percent. When measured sensitivities were compared with those predicted from models calibrated in the field, the potential for extreme sensitivity was demonstrated by errors in predicted changes in air voids that ranged from 0 to 98 percent because of small changes in AC or p0.075. These findings are disturbing when one considers the current industry trend toward the use of coarse Superpave mixtures. The conclusions drawn warrant a recommendation that mixture sensitivity analyses are needed in the Superpave volumetric mix design process. A mixture sensitivity analysis that is useful for identification of sensitive mixtures and that serves as an excellent field quality management tool is presented.

Resumen
The Superpave system is being implemented by state highway agencies. Many states implemented the asphalt binder specification during 1997. The volumetric mix design system, however, is being actively implemented. By the end of 1997, more than 200 Superpave projects had been built in the United States. As states consider specification changes necessitated by Superpave implementation, some questions are being raised. Fine aggregate angularity (FAA) requirements, one of the aggregate consensus properties, has generated considerable debate in some areas of the country. Adopting an FAA requirement of 45 percent for high traffic pavements has changed the number of sources available for asphalt mixtures. Superpave also provides a limit on flat and elongated particles. The aggregate properties requirements have increased interest regarding the basis of the specification and the values specified. The results of a limited cooperative study by industry and agencies to evaluate the role of FAA and particle shape on asphalt mixture properties are presented. A Superpave mixture design for high equivalent single-axle loads was evaluated. The fine aggregate used in the mixture design, with an FAA of 48, was replaced by other fine aggregates with lower FAA values. Properties of the mixtures containing the different fine aggregates were evaluated by using the asphalt pavement analyzer, the couch wheel tracker (a variation of the Hamburg rut tester), and the Superpave simple shear tester. A study to evaluate the sensitivity of the Superpave gyratory compactor and the Superpave mixture design system to differences in particle shape also is presented.

Resumen
The abstraction provided by virtual memory is central to the operation of modern operating systems. Making the most efficient use of the available translation hardware is critical to achieving high performance. The multiple page-size support provided by almost all architectures promises considerable benefits but poses a number of implementation challenges. This thesis presents a minimally-invasive approach to transparent multiple page-size support for Itanium Linux. In particular, it examines the interaction between supporting large pages and Itanium's two inbuilt hardware page-table walkers; one being a virtual linear page-table with limited support for storing different page-size translations and the other a more flexible but higher overhead hash table based translation cache. Compared to a single-page-size kernel, a range of benchmarks show performance improvements when multiple page-sizes are available, generally large working sets that stress the TLB. However, other benchmarks are negatively impacted. Analysis shows that the increased TLB coverage, resulting from the use of large pages, frequently does not reduce TLB miss rates sufficiently to make up for the increased cost of TLB reloads. These results, which are specific to the Itanium architecture, suggest that large-page support for Itanium Linux is best enabled selectively with insight into application behaviour.

Resumen
Cracking is one of the most severe distress modes of asphaltpavements. Thus characterising the fracture resistance properties of asphaltmixtures is the key issue for improving the performance relatedmixture design. The present master thesis project addresses the implementationof the theoretical framework, which is used to characterise thefracture resistance of mixtures based on the SuperPave indirect tensiletest (IDT). An open source Matlab-based software for analysing resilientmodulus, Poisson’s ratio, creep parameters and fracture resistance parametershas been developed. The software analyses the the IDT results, toestimate mixture’s fracture resistance based on hot mix asphalt FractureMechanics. Predictions form the field specimens concerning the fractureresistance obtained from IDT are compared with observed field performance.

A recent study at Kansas State University has shown that asphalt producers in Kansas are producing hot-mix asphalt (HMA) mixtures with lower asphalt contents than those in the job-mix formula. These drier mixtures are thought to be susceptible to moisture. This project evaluated the effect of asphalt content on rutting and moisture resistance of HMA. Two different mixtures and four varying asphalt contents, optimum and lower, were selected. Another large-size mixture with four varying asphalt contents was also studied. The Hamburg Wheel Tracking Device (HWTD)test (TEX-242-F) and the Kansas Standard Test-56 (KT-56), or modified Lottman test, were used to predict moisture damage and rutting potential of these mixes. All specimens tested were prepared with the Superpave gyratory compacter. Results of this study showed the drier mixtures performed better in rutting and were less susceptible to moisture.Asphalt content significantly affects the number of wheel passes in the HWTD test. The study also revealed a weak correlation between asphalt film thickness and performance test results. Thus, the effect of varying asphalt content is nonconclusive from a durability point of view. However, performance simulations using a theoretical model show that very dry mixes in asphalt pavements are likely to have shorter performance lives.

Resumen

Mustaque A. Hossain
The use of economical and environmentally friendly recycled asphalt materials has become increasingly popular for asphalt pavement construction. Although reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) and recycled asphalt shingles (RAS) are typically used in hot-mix asphalt, increasing the amount of RAP and RAS materials increases the potential for premature pavement distresses, especially cracking. This research evaluated four recycled Superpave mixtures with different RAP and RAS contents from Kansas Department of Transportation projects. Two of the mixtures contained 10% RAP and 5% RAS, while the other two mixtures contained 25% RAP but no RAS. Illinois semicircular bending and Florida indirect tension tests were performed to assess mixture cracking and fracture properties. Results showed that mixtures containing 10% RAP and 5% RAS have relatively low fracture energy, creep compliance, energy ratio, and flexibility index but high resilient modulus. These results indicate that mixtures containing 10% RAP and 5% RAS are stiffer, more prone to cracking, and tend to absorb less fracture energy. Mixtures with 25% RAP and no RAS showed the opposite behavior.

Resumen
Recent research developments have indicated that asphalt mixture durability and pavement life can be increased by modifying the Superpave asphalt mixture design method to achieve an in-place density of 95%, approximately 2% higher than the density requirements of conventionally designed Superpave mixtures. Doing so requires increasing the design air voids content to 5% and making changes to the mixture aggregate gradation so that effective binder content is not lowered. After successful laboratory testing of this modified mixture design method, known as Superpave 5, two controlled field trials and one full scale demonstration project, the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) let 12 trial projects across the six INDOT districts based on the design method. The Purdue University research team was tasked with observing the implementation of the Superpave 5 mixture design method, documenting the construction and completing an in-depth analysis of the quality control and quality assurance (QC/QA) data obtained from the projects. QC and QA data for each construction project were examined using various statistical metrics to determine construction performance with respect to INDOT Superpave 5 specifications. The data indicate that, on average, the contractors achieved 5% laboratory air voids, which coincides with the Superpave 5 recommendation of 5%. However, on average, the as-constructed mat density of 93.8% is roughly 1% less than the INDOT Superpave 5 specification. It is recommended that INDOT monitor performance of the Superpave 5 mixtures and implement some type of additional training for contractor personnel, in order to help them increase their understanding of Superpave 5 concepts and how best to implement the design method in their operation.

Resumen
The increased use of softer binders in Illinois over the past decade is primarily attributed to the increased use of recycled materials in asphalt pavement construction. The shift in demand of using PG 58-28 over PG 64-22 has resulted in potential alternative methods to produce softer binders more economically using proprietary products. However, there are challenges in using these proprietary products for asphalt modification because of uncertainty in their long-term performance and significant variability in binder chemistry. The current SuperPave performance grading specification for asphalt binders is insufficient in differentiating binders produced from these modifiers. Therefore, the objective of this study is to evaluate the performance of various softener-type asphalt binder modifiers using a wide array of rheological and chemistry tests for their integration into the Illinois Department of Transportation’s material specifications. The small-strain rheological tests and their parameters allowed for consistent grouping of modified binders and can be used as surrogates to identify performing and nonperforming asphalt binders. A new parameter, Δ|G*|peak τ, was developed from the linear amplitude sweep test and showed potential to discriminate binders based on their large-strain behavior. Chemistry-based parameters were shown to track aging and formulation changes. The modifier sources were identified using fingerprint testing and were manifested in the modified binder chemical and compositional characteristics. The two sources of base binders blended with the modifiers governed the aging rate of the modified binders. Mixture performance testing using the Illinois Flexibility Index Test and the Hamburg Wheel-Track Test were consistent with the rheological and chemical findings, except for the glycol amine-based modified binder, which showed the worst cracking performance with the lowest flexibility index among the studied modifiers. This was contrary to its superior rheological performance, which may be attributed to lower thermal stability, resulting in high mass loss during mixing. According to the characterization of field-aged binders, laboratory aging of two pressurized aging vessel cycles or more may represent realistic field aging of 10 to 15 years at the pavement surface and is able to distinguish modified binders. Therefore, an extended aging method of two pressurized aging vessel cycles was recommended for modified binders. Two different testing suites were recommended for product approval protocol with preliminary thresholds for acceptable performance validated with field-aged data.
