Resumen
The ubiquitous settlement pattern of the American suburb is in fact a carefully constructed reality. Because the vision of the home in the suburbs is very deeply rooted, any development which is considered threatening to this image is met with a defensive reaction. Too often, however, when these NIMBY ("Not In My Back Yard") sentiments are permitted to dictate what is acceptable in a community, housing affordable to low- and moderate-income households is purposely excluded.
This thesis explores the processes by which discriminatory NIMBY sentiments are realized as legal development regulations in contemporary suburbs. The historic evolution of the suburbs and the psychological foundations behind their typical characteristics are presented as the sources of a suburban value structure which esteems NIMBY. Suburban governments are mandated to represent their constituents' values, but exclusionary development controls are a complex product of constituent demands, fiscal constraints, and constitutional limits.
This analysis reveals that legislative responsibility often bows to political weakness. NIMBY groups use political pressure to manipulate municipal governments into using their vast discretionary powers over development as a weapon for exclusion. In response to either political or fiscal motivations, legislators pressure planners to validate discriminatory legislative agendas with their plans, thus undermining their abilities to guide growth effectively. Although the process of development regulation is well-grounded in historic and legal precedents, when legislation is used for discriminatory ends, citizens' civil and property rights are jeopardized. This thesis explains how regulations such as zoning ordinances can be used for exclusion when municipal government disregards its mandate to be the guardian of the general welfare.
Increased awareness of both the motivations and the manifestations of the NIMBY phenomenon may enable individuals as well as lawmakers to create a more equitable suburbia.

Resumen
The single family home is a building type synonymous with residential architecture among many in the United States. The notion that the ideal built character of a dwelling is a private structure, built on private land, and owned by a private entity is as old as that ownership equating to power in human history. Though the houses of today are no longer the literal manifestations of strength seen in the fortifications of feudal castles or wealth seen in the opulence of imperial palaces, the metaphorical implications remain. It was on these allegories that the Post-WWII housing boom capitalized, using slogans and advertisements meant to invoke the glory and strength of owning a home. They charged that a man was not truly a man until he owned his own home, and that this American Dream can be achieved for surprisingly low prices. Thus the home was commoditized and development after development of ‘single family homes’ were replicated across the country. 70 years later, these structures which were built quickly for cost efficiency, and with a very specific ‘single family’ in mind for their residents are reaching the end of their usable lives. The architecture which replaces or adds to them has significant power to redefine the notion of a single-family home and its surrounding neighborhood. This thesis seeks to understand the current trend of redevelopment in these areas and propose alternate solutions which enrich the built character of the community and expands on the notion of what residential architecture can be.

Resumen
This research explores why and how suburban local authorities are attempting to invigorate their cultural provision for economic, environmental and social ends by investigating how culture is used in suburban places as part of regeneration. In response to the perceived neglect and degradation of England’s suburbs and the ongoing significance of cultural regeneration strategies, this thesis examines the contemporary conceptualisation of suburban development at the national scale and considers three case study areas - Bury, Croydon and Sandwell - in terms of their cultural development and regeneration at the local authority scale. I argue that the national scale policy-contributing discussion employs many urban regeneration discourses when considering the future development of suburbs, while also reinforcing rather than unsettling many suburban stereotypes. From my analysis of suburban local authority cultural policies, development practices and resulting cultural venues and spaces, I conclude that the mobilisation of culture for suburban regeneration has similar characteristics, aims and assumptions to strategies in urban areas. Each of the case study areas demonstrates different plans and expectations for cultural development, with a range of resulting practices, challenges and outcomes. This thesis concludes that place-specific cultural development and regeneration approaches that avoid replicating urban regeneration rhetoric and practice should be a focus for future suburban development.

Resumen
Notions of modernity as progress have traditionally excluded the significance of woman's societal participation. This thesis investigates the exclusion of woman from the rhetoric of modernity and modem living through her culturally defined role as the primary shopper. Entrenched ambiguities have helped sustain societal contradictions that have marred both the cultural identity of woman as primary shopper and the suburban shopping centre. This dissertation, therefore, analyses the mid-twentieth century suburban shopping centre in relation 10 retail practice and woman's cultural identity in relation to broader community change. Evolving from within the specific dynamics of modern living, the values of progress are coupled with tradition thereby creating a unique space that represents both change and stability. This dissertation grounds the progressive value of modernity within the cyclical traditions of everyday practice to construct an understanding of woman's cultural identity in relation to the demands of modem living. A critique of broader societal issues and retail development culminate in a focused analysis of the Roselands shopping centre in Sydney, Australia 1965. Acknowledging the importance of use in the construction of meaning recognises the woman as primary shopper as integral to the rhetoric of retail practice and societal progress. A gap emerges within woman's cultural identity because although she is culturally aligned with the traditions of domesticity her role as primary shopper also positions her as central to modem living. It is within this ideological gap that a movement of meaning occurs and situates the shopping centre as a site of cultural mediation. This dissertation concludes that issues of accessibility and everyday use positions the shopping space as an important site of social mediation that negotiates cultural change on a level of everyday practice and, importantly, acknowledges woman's presence and participation within modernity.

Resumen
This work explores human consciousness, using a framework of the Structure of Feelings and Experience developed from the work of Raymond Williams and Bernard Smith. It then examines aspects of the consciousness of the Mentally Ill, the Intellectually Disabled, Addicted and Indigenous people, with three aims: 1/. To identify a model of consciousness which reflects the major indicators arising from the structure of feelings and experience, and those arising from consideration of the four subject groups, representing the plurality of human consciousness. 2/. To explore some of the lessons for mainstream citizens, arising from alternative aspects of consciousness, both positive and negative, which these groups exhibit. 3/. To suggest ways the model of consciousness can be used to empower those with mental illness, or intellectual disability, by acknowledging and strengthening their opportunities to take responsibility for their lives. By engaging them more in active roles in the planning and delivery of their health, rehabilitation and community services. And to illustrate some examples of practical applications of person-valuing and spirit-engaging healing and empowering processes, used in groups in Australia and overseas, which point to ways of improving health and rehabilitation policy and practice in Australia

Resumen
The purpose of this study is to examine the perspective of suburban youths on their residential are. This research is based upon qualitative interviews. In order to analyse the qualitative interviews that will be conducted, two theories will be implemented. To achieve the highest quality results, different theories will be applied to suit the purpose of this study. Our informants are three male and three females aged 18-19, living in a suburban area of south Stockholm. The results in this study have highlighted that young people in suburban areas have both positive and negative image of their residential areas. The youths believe that the society have attributed bad conceptions towards them. Even though they don’t agree with the society, the youths do not seem to see light in the future for the area.

Jamin, Mikael Jan. "Sociolinguistic variation in the Paris suburbs". Thesis, University of Kent, 2005. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.529312.

Texto completo
Resumen
This thesis investigates linguistic variation, diffusion and change in two suburban towns of Paris (La Courneuve and Fontenay-sous-Bois), using quantitative methods to analyse innovative accent forms presently developing. After an introductory chapter which sets out the origins and objectives of the study, Chapter 2 gives the background to the Paris banlieues as well as a description of the research sites. Banlieues are ideal places of investigation for the linguist interested in sociolectal variation in that they accommodate a population which is relatively isolated from the linguistic norm of the dominant society. As a result of this isolation, a recognisable localised vernacular has emerged. This is in itself unsurprising, as similar phenomena have been observed elsewhere in low-contact contexts. What is particularly interesting here is that this vernacular has emerged in an urban context, generally characteristised by a relatively high degree of sociolectal contact, especially with prestigious varieties. Chapter 3 aims at showing how previous research has tackled the study of sociolinguistic variation in urban contexts. We then discuss the sociolinguistic literature more specifically focused on banlieues. From this, three linguistic variables thought to be potentially interesting are selected. In Chapter 4, the methodology used to obtain the linguistic data is discussed and the social characteristics of the sample are described. We then proceed to analyse the linguistic data collected. Chapter 5 focuses on the sociolinguistic distribution of palatalisation in the corpus. Chapter 6 investigates /r/-realisation and Chapter 7 variation between /a/ and /a/. Generally, the same social group seems to lead the adoption of non-standard variants for most variables: working-class youngsters from immigrant backgrounds. Interestingly, the adoption seems to be spreading to other social and ethnic groups, especially amongst the younger age group of the sample. This diffusion is quantitatively explained in terms of integration and identification with the street-culture which has developed in the banlieues and of the nature of social network ties that the street creates. What is also interesting is that for all age groups and for all the linguistic variables concerned, a generational increase is observed. This in tum suggests that this possible diffusion of non-standard forms in the banlieues might be introducing a change in progress in contemporary metropolitan French.

Resumen
This thesis is a proposal on how architects and designers can begin to rethink our role in providing for the health, safety and welfare of the general population- with an emphasis on health- specifically in existing suburbias. Changes can be made to take existing unhealthy environments to transform them into healthy, inclusive places that different types of people can genuinely enjoy living in. The differences in what we know now vs. what was known back when most subrubs were originally planned are drastic. Our knowledge and understanding of the consequences of certain design decisions are understood, so why haven't American suburbs adapted to address the health issues we have created for ourselves? My thesis is an attempt to answer the question of how suburbs can be changed (/evolved) to encourage socially, environmentally, personally healthy environments. As a future architect who is planning to dedicate my career to protecting the health, safety and welfare of the general public, I feel inclined to address the issue of rampant unhealthy lifestyles in the suburbs. Design movements such as Congress for New Urbanism and Smart Growth have laid the ground work for proposals found in this thesis. The largest criticisms of those movements are that they an be seen as forceful attempts to control peoples' lifestyles. My intention is not to trick or force people to live a certain way through design. My intention is to present options for healthier lifestyles for current suburbanites to benefit from. I aim to be very sensitive to the cultural differences of those who live in certain areas and to respect and preserve the successes of existing suburbs.

Resumen
This is an inquiry into the evolution of the North American suburb by way of review of notable historical precedents of various types of suburban developments.
A precept of this thesis is that the current, dominant form of urbanization is of a suburban nature, characterized by vast areas of low-density, single-use, disjointed compartments of daily life; that suburbanization has become the physical de-construction of community; and that suburbanization at its most extreme is ultimately deleterious to a healthy society and environmentally unsustainable. The suburban environment is far from the desired ideal and in fact is an aberration.
Given our seemingly innate desire for the ideal of a "home within a garden," and through the inquiry into the successes and failures of past planned suburbs, it is hoped that a better understanding and a melding of the ideal and an equitable reality can be obtained, promoting a healthy, vibrant sense of community that is environmentally sustainable.
The examples of planned suburban precedents that are examined include industrial towns, railroad and streetcar suburbs, as well as pre- and post-war automobile suburbs. Also there is some examination of utopian and alternative planning theories as well as contemporary examples of successful planned communities. All of which provide a greater understanding of the principles that must be applied to address the issues of our future urbanization process, which will likely be of a suburban nature.
It is hoped that through this inquiry into successful suburban precedents, that a clearer understanding can be achieved of how to more closely attain the individual ideal of a home within a garden, while balancing the collective needs of a community and sustainability, within an inherently chaotic, free-market process.

Resumen
Thesis (M. Arch.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Architecture, 1994.
Includes bibliographical references (p. 103-106).
American suburbs are repeatedly assailed for being placeless, with restrictive zoning that isolates the public realm from the private. Critics accuse the suburbs of over-emphasizing castle-like detached single family homes at the expense of civic or community spaces. Recent interest in mixed-use residential communities indicates a desire for a greater reintegration of the individual household with the collective life of a larger community. A crucial place to investigate this urbanistic transformation of suburban development is at the basic 'building block' of community: the micro-neighborhood of dwellings within close proximity. The thesis attempts to answer these questions: at this finer scale, how can one develop a community-oriented civic presence that fosters neighborly interactions in a residential setting? How can this presence connect micro-neighborhoods to the surrounding community? And how does the looser density of the suburbs affect a transplanted, urban-derived sense of shared space?

Langlois, Paul. "A GIS Approach for Evaluating Municipal Planning Capability: Residential Built Form in Markham and Vaughan, Ontario". Thesis, University of Waterloo, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10012/2910.

Texto completo
Resumen
This research describes a methodology for measuring built form patterns using spatial data and GIS that is amenable to the study of large geographical areas. This methodology was used to investigate the capability of municipal planning to influence residential development. In the early 1990s, the Town of Markham, Ontario, Canada adopted a residential development philosophy inspired by New Urbanism. An adjacent municipality, the City of Vaughan, has employed a conventional development approach. By calculating several built form measures derived from the design prescriptions associated with New Urbanism, this study seeks to discern if Markham's adoption of an unconventional development philosophy has resulted in a residential built form distinct from that in Vaughan.

Built form measures are calculated for both municipalities for two eras. Development from 1981 to 1995 represents the "before" or baseline configuration, while development from 1996 to 2003 is used to characterize built form created when Markham's New Urbanist-inspired approach was in force. Period over period comparisons are carried out for each municipality, as are within-period comparisons between municipalities.

Findings indicate that development patterns are distinct in the two study periods. From the early period to the more recent, street networks take on a more grid-like organization while building lots and blocks become smaller. These changes are accompanied by an overall decline in accessibility to amenities. However, development patterns were found to be quite similar in both municipalities in the recent study period, exhibiting differences in degree, not in kind. The findings appear to indicate that planning's influence over residential built form is limited to moderately accelerating positive trends, and moderately retarding negative trends.

Resumen
This dissertation examines the evolution of the urban tissues of Quebec City's "faubourgs." It présents a diachronic morphological analysis of the structuration of the residential tissues of these neighborhoods between 1608 and 2001. It also provides a synchronic analysis of the syntax of the tissues as well as an architectural typology describing the main architectural types in terms of genesis and processes of derivation in successive types. Finally, it examines the practices of different groups of agents and their impacts on morphological change, while stressing the social and economic conditions under which these agents acted. The study is intended as a contribution to the fields of Urban Morphology and Urban History. This case study is among the first to apply in a North American context the theoretical framework and methods developed by the Italian school of process typology. It proposes also to envision morphological transformation through a theory of practice. Drawing heavily on cartographie documentation, urban iconography, and archival material on land development from notarial and religious sources, this urban morphogenetic study posits that the formation of the urban tissue can be better understood as the outeome of a dialectical interplay between purposeful planning practices, everyday "spontaneous" practices, and structurally resilient settlement configurations and urban form inherited from the past.

Resumen
This study on feminism is a study aimed at understanding a reality within feminism (suburban feminism) in the suburbs of Gothenburg and the underlying factors that contribute to the emergence of this new phenomenon, and why women in the suburbs relate to as an alternative social tool in the quest for better social standings. The research was focused on the 2 major issues and they were (1) the effect of intersectionality on feminism in the suburbs and (2), the effect of internal factors like culture and religion on feminism in the suburbs. Intersectional analysis in my study partly explained the emergence of this new phenomenon (suburban feminism) as a reality within feminism. Cultural shock experienced by the immigrant women when they come Sweden explained also the relevance of cultural polarisation as a factor in the emergence of suburban feminism. The research was done through the qualitative research methods among the immigrant populations living in the suburbs of Gothenburg. The primary research material was the respondent’s experiences and answers to a variety of questions. With the help of several respondents and earlier research done on feminism in the suburbs shows how suburban feminism as a phenomenon emerges and takes shape among the immigrant populations and how this kind of feminism emerges out of the daily challenges ranging from intersectionality, socio-economic setups and several other aspects the respondents refer to as cultural shock between different cultures that have converged in the suburbs. In general, suburban feminism is a phenomenon that emerged out of several factors that range most of them intended for the furtherance and empowerment of women in all spheres of life. The respondent’s answers to the questions fielded in this study together with the earlier research done on feminism and equality in Sweden formed the bedrock on which the study is anchored on. Suburban feminism in my study is a product of social construction different from feminism anchored on theories and this becomes more evident from the answers of my respondents in their understanding of feminism.

Resumen
Magister Artium - MA
My creative writing full master’s thesis, entitled Townships, Shacks and Suburbs, is a collection of poems that explores the role played by place in shaping identity. Poems in this collection seek to examine the interplay between identity and place, particularly the influence that environmental settings or contexts have in shaping how individuals define who they are. The theme of place is divided into three environmental contexts, namely the township, the rural context and the urban context. The poet navigates between these three environmental contexts, observing how each influences the way people define who they are and also how they identify with that particular environmental context. This definition of self, which forms part of identity, encompasses the day-to-day life, emotions, struggles, memories and a variety of other aspects that are linked to place and are inherent in identity-formation. The observation of how identity is shaped by place includes the poet and extends to people around him. This collection of poems can be viewed as a man’s attempt at finding out who he is, by exploring the history of his life, as well as reflecting on the intricacies of growing up or being exposed to a variety of environmental settings. It can also be viewed as an attempt at learning who people around him are and how their identities are shaped by the place(s) they live in.

Resumen
My thesis explores London’s and Brighton’s Romantic-period affluent residential suburbs as represented in fiction by Charlotte Smith, Medora Gordon Bryon, Elizabeth Helme, Jane Austen, and Elizabeth Sandham. While scholarship is still small in size and scope, literary critics, historians, geographers, and architects have increasingly recognized the importance of this period for understanding suburban histories and geographies more generally. At this time, the middling ranks began to move en masse to the suburbs, distinctly suburban architecture and developments proliferated, and unprecedented acceleration in the growth of suburban population and infrastructure occurred. My thesis is the first full-length assertion of the suburbs’ significant re-ordering of society and the built environment in this period, a transformation that anticipates today’s ubiquitous Anglo-American suburbs. I ground my study in Romantic-period suburbs by using the work of J.C. Loudon, whose The Suburban Gardener, and Villa Companion (1838) was the first in-depth treatise on explicitly suburban homes and gardens. Furthermore, I spatialize the suburb, extending current criticism on Romantic-period homes, suburbs, and cities, and applying the ideas of postmodern geographers and spatial theorists. I define the suburban by focusing on how characters experience domestic space’s geographical location, material features, and social spaces. These elements of space, along with the connections between time and suburban space, reveal how the suburb is implicated with the urban and the rural and with issues of management and power. Characters experience suburban space differently depending on factors such as socio-economic status, lifestyle, gender, and space of primary identification. Multiple and diverse versions of suburban homes emerge. Invariably, the novels all prize some kind of peaceful retreat—a space of reflection, emotional tranquillity, intimacy, or physical rest. I interrogate how and why fictional narratives condone or condemn particular strategies of suburban space-making in order to elaborate on wider cultural implications.

The substantive la banlieue does not simply describe a geographical territory, but rather names a particular articulation of images and narratives that constitute the ‘banlieue question’. This dissertation tracks the development and contestation of a set of procedures that construct the banlieue as an object of knowledge, expertise, and intervention. Under the heading ‘banlieue stories’ I collect a range of media that engage with la banlieue as a discursive regime, challenging the practices and procedures through which screen media construct the banlieues as the ‘lost territories’ of the Republic.

Hoskin, Sara. "Foreclosures and Crime: Testing Social Disorganization Theory in the Suburbs". Doctoral diss., University of Central Florida, 2012. http://digital.library.ucf.edu/cdm/ref/collection/ETD/id/5308.

Resumen
Foreclosures have increased in the US since the 1970's. The increase in foreclosures has caused concern among some researchers on their affect on crime. Social disorganization theory measures the effect various structural characteristics, such as poverty, residential instability/mobility, racial/ethnic heterogeneity, and family disruption have on crime. This study, though, is concerned with residential instability/mobility, or the presence of foreclosed houses in neighborhoods. Although most studies using this theory look at low-income neighborhoods, the following research looks at middle- and upper-income neighborhoods, which have been greatly affected by foreclosures. The theory also argues that the level of collective efficacy can reduce crime even in neighborhoods that are otherwise considered to be socially disorganized. Using ArcGIS mapping, the following research investigated 30 neighborhoods in Orange County, Florida that have high foreclosures in neighborhoods for the years of 2005-2009. Canvasses were conducted in all 30 neighborhoods to measure the level of collective efficacy within the neighborhoods to help explain the presence of high or low residential burglary. Thirteen neighborhoods stood out as noteworthy because they fell at the far end of the spectrum – high foreclosures and high crime, and high foreclosures and low crime. Some of the neighborhoods with high residential burglary did have strong indicators of low collective efficacy, while neighborhoods with low residential burglary had indicators of high collective efficacy. The majority of the indicators found in this research support previous research on various indicators of collective efficacy.

Chang, L. "Manufacturing landscape : the representation of suburbs, Birmingham 1780-c.1850". Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2011. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1323005/.

Resumen
This thesis explores how suburbs during the British Industrialisation (1780-1850) were represented. ‘Industrialisation’ is well researched in many disciplines. In history of art, the landscape imageries produced during this period are usually categorised and approached as rural/natural landscape painting and (urban) topographic views. However, the categorisation could overlook the representation of the place in between: the suburb. This thesis therefore views the suburb in terms of the impact of industrialisation on the form and the extent of the city, and thus regards the suburb not only as a modern, middle-class and residential district we are familiar with today, but also as the developing edge not only of a built environment but also of a linked set of social and economic changes. The main case study is Birmingham. Birmingham developed from a small provincial settlement into the manufacturing centre of the country between 1780 and 1850. How to perceive, recognise, and represent the suburb made as a result of this rapid urban growth and industrialisation posed a challenge for local artists. This thesis focuses on nearly a hundred topographic views they produced, and argue that these pictures represent the idea of suburb. I will analyse the pictures in a semiotics way. Chapter one begins with the imagery of the town and explores the difficulty of representing the (industrial) suburb. Chapter two continues to investigate the representation of suburb through imageries of Nature. Chapter three focuses on the topographic view tradition of the town. Chapter four argues that the imagery of the suburb represents a modern life in it. Chapter five explores how the periphery of the town was developed for residential purposes and how this process might be represented in pictures.

Dunsford, Ian M. "The interwar suburbs of North West London : planning for regeneration". Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2002. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/57/.

Texto completo
Resumen
Recent UK planning policy has concentrated on regenerating inner cities. For the past thirty years, the interwar suburbs of North West London have seen a changing population, rising levels of deprivation and a deteriorating built environment. Exploring these changes and the role of local centres as foci for regeneration and revitalisation, twelve centres are investigated and their suitability for development assessed in the context of the draft Spatial Development Strategy for London. A new approach to suburban planning is proposed linking the changing condition of centres and the character of the surrounding neighbourhoods to develop more effective sub-regional planning policies.

Historically, relationships between police and residents in minority communities have often been contentious. However most of the literature on race, place, and policing has focused on the policing of Blacks and their interactions with the police in urban settings. Building on this work, this study aims to capture similar processes of racialized policing as they occur in the suburbs. This project expands our understanding by exploring policing as it is carried out in a marginalized Black enclave located in a predominately white middle class suburb. Specifically, I focus on Meacham Park, which is a segregated enclave annexed to the nearby white community of Kirkwood, Missouri. Drawing on interviews with thirty African-American residents of Meacham Park, I explore how residents experience policing and their attitudes toward the police. The interviews reveal a contentious history of relations between residents and the police, and I discuss respondents’ accounts of specific experiences with police surveillance, harassment, and (in some cases) misconduct. However, though many respondents reported extremely negative attitudes toward the police, the great majority also reported at least some positive interactions and experiences. This study extends research on the policing of minority communities into a segregated suburban context and offers implications for improving relations between the police and minority communities.

Resumen
This study presents an overview of Edgewood Land and Improvement Company's early suburban development in Knoxville, Tennessee. It discusses the history of the Washington Avenue Addition and Lincoln Park, developed by Edgewood between 1888 and 1910. The evidence suggests that Edgewood evolved its marketing strategies for both suburbs: Washington Avenue Addition was first planned as an exclusive enclave for the upper-middle class, while Lincoln Park was initially designed for the middle class. Due to national and local economic problems, which caused poor land sales, Edgewood shifted strategies in both suburbs. Ultimately, the Washington Avenue Addition became a multi-class suburb. Lincoln Park was developed as a working-class suburb.
