Resumen
This article presents experiments based on the extensible domain-specific web corpus for “layfication”. For these experiments, both the existing layfication corpus (in Swedish and in English) and a new addition in English (the NHS-PubMed subcorpus) are used. With this extended corpus, methods to classify lay-specialized medical sublanguages cross-linguistically using small data and noisy web documents are investigated. Sublanguage is a language variety used in specific domains. Here, the authors focus on two medical sublanguages, namely the “patientspeak” (lay) and the medical jargon (specialized). Cross-lingual sublanguage classification is still largely underexplored although it can be crucial in downstream applications for digital health and cyber-physical systems. Classification models are built using small and noisy training sets in Swedish and evaluated on English test sets. The performance of Naive Bayes classifiers—built with stopwords and with Bag-of-Words—is compared with convolutional neural network classifiers leveraging on MUSE multi-lingual word embeddings. Results are promising and nuanced. These results are proposed as a first baseline for cross-lingual sublanguage classification.

Resumen
Abstract Due to its specific linguistic properties, the language found in clinical records has been characterized as a distinct sublanguage. Even within the clinical domain, though, there are major differences in language use, which has led to more fine-grained distinctions based on medical fields and document types. However, previous work has mostly neglected the influence of term variation. By contrast, we propose to integrate the potential for term variation in the characterization of clinical sublanguages. By analyzing a corpus of clinical records, we show that the different sections of these records vary systematically with regard to their lexical, terminological and semantic composition, as well as their potential for term variation. These properties have implications for automatic term recognition, as they influence the performance of frequency-based term weighting.

Resumen
Scientific sublanguages evolve in accordance with the needs of the Discourse Community (DC) with new words being coined and a gradual change in the meanings expressed through existing lexis. In so far as the central concepts relate to each other, similar relational patterns emerge in their surface constructs, words. Consequently, the "frame of reference" for a given lexical item is to be found in the genre-specific lexical environment of that word. This is revealed through collocation, as measured using Mutual Information statistics. It is further posited that the conceptual frameworks of scientific sublanguages can be visualised through closed set collocational networks. These networks may be demonstrated locally through digraphs, but the network is posited as a more suitable means of demonstrating the complexity of relationships between individual items. The collocational networks are seen as forming the unique frame of reference for any "word" within a given sublanguage

AbstractGeneralising Hrushovski's fusion technique we construct the free fusion of two strongly minimal theories T1. T2 intersecting in a totally categorical sub-theory T0. We show that if. e.g., T0 is the theory of infinite vector spaces over a finite field then the fusion theory Tω, exists, is complete and ω-stable of rank ω. We give a detailed geometrical analysis of Tω, proving that if both T1, T2 are 1-based then. Tω can be collapsed into a strongly minimal theory, if some additional technical conditions hold—all trivially satisfied if T0 is the theory of infinite vector spaces over a finite field .

Resumen
Although terminology is a branch of linguistics with a long history, a number of terminological systems have not been thoroughly analyzed. One of the areas that falls into this category is the terminology of humanitarian subjects because the way their terminology is formed differs from the term formation of STEM disciplines. Sublanguages of humanitarian disciplines quite often borrow general language words, which can be explained by the fact that the area of their studies is related to general rules of society functioning. In the course of transfer from the general language to domain-specific language, the semantic and/or morphological structure of words might undergo modifications. This article analyses the methods of formation of the English terminology of hermeneutics. Hermeneutics is a theory and methodology of text interpretation. One of the distinguishing features of its sublanguage is the fact that it is formed with the use of a considerable number of general language words that are used by text interpreters in a specialized meaning. This paper presents the analysis of the semantic transformations of some of these words after they became part of the sublanguage of hermeneutics.

Resumen
Let K be an algebraically closed field and let L be its canonical language; that is, L consists of all relations on K which are definable from addition, multiplication, and parameters from K. Two sublanguages L1 and L2 of L are definably equivalent if each relation in L1 can be defined by an L2-formula with parameters in K, and vice versa. The equivalence classes of sublanguages of L form a quotient lattice of the power set of L about which very little is known. We will not distinguish between a sublanguage and its equivalence class.Let Lm denote the language of multiplication alone, and let La denote the language of addition alone. Let f ∈ K [X, Y] and consider the algebraic function defined by f (x, y) = 0 for x, y ∈ K. Let Lf denote the language consisting of the relation defined by f. The possibilities for Lm ∨ Lf are examined in §2, and the possibilities for La ∨ Lf are examined in §3. In fact the only comprehensive results known are under the additional hypothesis that f actually defines a rational function (i.e., when f is linear in one of the variables), and in positive characteristic, only expansions of addition by polynomials (i.e., when f is linear and monic in one of the variables) are understood. It is hoped that these hypotheses will turn out to be unnecessary, so that reasonable generalizations of the theorems described below to algebraic functions will be true. The conjecture is that L covers Lm and that the only languages between La and L are expansions of La by scalar multiplications.

Resumen
Cross-lingual text classification is an important task due to the globalization and the increased availability of multilingual data. This thesis explores the method of implementing cross-lingual classification on Swedish and English medical corpora. Specifically, this the- sis explores the simple convolutional neural network (CNN) with MUSE pre-trained word embeddings to approach binary classification of sublanguages (“lay” and “specialized”) from Swedish healthcare texts to English healthcare texts. MUSE is a library that provides state-of-the-art multilingual word embeddings and large-scale high-quality bilingual dictionaries. The thesis presents experiments with imbalanced and balanced class distribution on training data and test data to examine the effect of class distribution, and also examine the influences of clean test dataset and noisy test dataset. The results show that balanced distribution of classes in training data performs significantly better than the training data with imbalanced class distribution, and clean test data gives the benefit of transferring the labels from one language to another. The thesis also compares the performance of the simple convolutional neural network model with the Naive Bayes baseline. Results show that on this task a simple Naive Bayes classifier based on bag-of-words translated using MUSE English-Swedish dictionary outperforms a simple CNN model based on MUSE pre-trained word embeddings in several experimental settings.

Resumen
For more than forty years, research has been on going in the use of the computer in the processing of natural language. During this period methods have evolved, with various parsing techniques and grammars coming to prominence. Problems still exist, not least in the field of Machine Translation. However, one of the successes in this field is the translation of sublanguage. The present work reports Deterministic Parsing, a relatively new parsing technique, and its application to the sublanguage of an aircraft maintenance manual for Machine Translation. The aim has been to investigate the practicability of using Deterministic Parsers in the analysis stage of a Machine Translation system. Machine Translation, Sublanguage and parsing are described in general terms with a review of Deterministic parsing systems, pertinent to this research, being presented in detail. The interaction between machine Translation, Sublanguage and Parsing, including Deterministic parsing, is also highlighted. Two types of Deterministic Parser have been investigated, a Marcus-type parser, based on the basic design of the original Deterministic parser (Marcus, 1980) and an LR-type Deterministic Parser for natural language, based on the LR parsing algorithm. In total, four Deterministic Parsers have been built and are described in the thesis. Two of the Deterministic Parsers are prototypes from which the remaining two parsers to be used on sublanguage have been developed. This thesis reports the results of parsing by the prototypes, a Marcus-type parser and an LR-type parser which have a similar grammatical and linguistic range to the original Marcus parser. The Marcus-type parser uses a grammar of production rules, whereas the LR-type parser employs a Definite Clause Grammar(DGC).

Resumen
Various studies have described a highly specialised language as a subset or subsystem of the general language (Harris, 1968: 152), a jargon (Bross, Shapiro, & Anderson, 1972: 1303) or a sublanguage (Sager, 1986: 2; DeVille, 2001 : 5 and McEnery & Wilson, 1996: 166). One form of language that often been considered as a sublanguage is the clinical language of the health care domain. Different studies have defined a sublanguage on the basis of features such as specialised subject matter, specific community, the speaker communicative purpose and domain-specific lexis and syntax. McEnery & Wilson (1996: 166), on the other hand, suggest that a sublanguage should be defined based on having a high degree of closure at various levels of description. This study replicates and expands on McEnery & Wilson 's investigation. The prime aim is to measure the degree of closure of the nursing textbooks and journals in order, first, to determine whether these two restricted forms of clinical language can be rightly categorised as a sublanguage; second, to understand better the linguistic features of the language of the nursing domain; and finally, to better understand the nature of sub language. The nursing textbook and journal corpora are compared to weather reports and the BNC Sampler. Like clinical language, weather reports have been classified as a sub language in many studies (for example Kittridge, 1982: 116). It is hypothesised that the weather reports and the nursing textbooks and journals represent sub languages and that the BNC Sampler, on the other hand, represents unrestricted language. Besides, measuring closure at lexical, morphsyntactic and constituent levels, this study extends McEnery & Wilson's (1996) methodology to an examination of n-gram closure. The findings show that none of the linguistic inventories of these corpora approach closure at all levels; the nursing textbooks and journals seem to belong in a middle area between highly constrained language and highly unconstrained language. The idea of 'sublanguage' is, thus problematic. The original definition of a sublanguage suggests a clear division between sublanguage and unconstrained language. However, the findings of this study seem to show that there is no explicit or clear-cut boundary; rather, the concept of sublanguage should be on a continuum, with constrained language/sublanguage and unconstrained languages at the two extreme ends, and the position of particular types of language an effect, in part, of genre.

Ліб, А. С. Семантизація дуальних процесів та результатів перекладу в міській та сільській субумовах [Текст] / А. С. Ліб // Practical aspects of aquaculture under the conditions of euro integration: VI International Scientific and Practical Conference, Milan, 20-26 October 2020. – Milan, Library of Congress Cataloging-in-Publication Data, Italy, 2020. - P. 403- 407.
Goal: is a theoretical justification and analysis of the Semanticization of dual processes and translation results in urban and rural Sublanguages. Theoretical meaning: is to systematize the theoretical prerequisites for the study of semanticization of dual processes and translation results in urban and rural Sublanguages. The language of the representatives in urban and rural Sublanguages differs significantly, which in turn creates an excellent implementation of translation processes. The process of translation from the outside acts as a process of linguistic communication. The source of information in this process is the speaker or written source. In the process of translation, communication is carried out in two stages. Therefore, translation should be considered as a combination of two processes - communication and coding. Today, professionalisms, slang and neologisms are widespread in urban sub-conditions. The use of different dialects predominates in rural sub-conditions. It is obvious that language fashion and its influence on language is an inexhaustible topic. Fashionable words, expressions, phrases - play a huge role in the development of any language.

"Gaytaal". Thesis, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10210/6638.

Texto completo
Resumen
M.Litt. et Phil.
The primary aim of this study is to describe a language form used by homosexuals, specifically the homosexual language as spoken by Afrikaans homosexuals. Secondarily the aim is to compile a gay lexicon with words derived from this research. A further underlying aim of this study is to establish the lexical item gay as an Afrikaans lemma. Gay as such has up to now only appeared in one Afrikaans dictionary (HAT 1994), although it appears frequently in colloquial Afrikaans language, Afrikaans printed media as well as the spoken media. Gay language is well established and recognised in countries such as America and the Netherlands. They have even compiled dictionaries for the use of gay language. In Afrikaans we have dictionaries for several forms of slang and jargon and even short lists of words compiled by researchers for gay words, but still no dictionary for Afrikaans gay language. This study aims at being a first step in creating a dictionary for gay terms. The effeminisation practised by homosexuals features strongly in their use of language and reflects in the frequent use of gender swopping. A further characteristic of gay language is the use of female names and pronouns. This study analyses the influence of the gay reality on their use of language. In order to describe the language spoken by Afrikaans gays, this study explains terms such as slang, jargon and register and then categorises Afrikaans gay language accordingly. Etymologically some gay words can be traced, but not many. The practice of gay language is an ever-changing one, which is characteristic of any spoken form of language. Therefore, the list of gay terms with which the study concludes, will have to be updated frequently. The field of gay language leaves itself wide open for further research, especially with regards to the quantitative measurement of voice pitches and voice patterns. A study done in the Cape region would also assist in giving a broader perspective into the existence of gay language as influenced by dialect.

Texto completo
Resumen
An abridged version of this technical report has been submitted to KR 2000. Matching of concepts against patterns is a new inference task in Description Logics, which was originally motivated by applications of the CLASSIC system. Consequently, the work on this problem was until now mostly concerned with sublanguages of the Classic language, which does not allow for existential restrictions. Motivated by an application in chemical process engineering, which requires a description language with existential restrictions, this paper investigates the matching problem in Description Logics with existential restrictions. It turns out that existential restrictions make matching more complex in two respects. First, whereas matching in sublanguages of CLASSIC is polynomial, deciding the existence of matchers is an NP-complete problem in the presence of existential restrictions. Second, whereas in sublanguages of Classic solvable matching problems have a unique least matcher, this is not the case for languages with existential restrictions. Thus, it is not a priori clear which of the (possibly infinitely many) matchers should be returned by a matching algorithm. After determining the complexity of the decision problem, the present paper first investigates the question of what are 'interesting' sets of matchers, and then describes algorithms for computing these sets for the languages EL (which allows for conjunction and existential restrictions) and ALE (which additionally allows for value restrictions, primitive negation, and the bottom concept).

Küsters, Ralf y Ralf Molitor. Computing Least Common Subsumers in ALEN. Aachen University of Technology, 2000. http://dx.doi.org/10.25368/2022.110.

Texto completo
Resumen
Computing the least common subsumer (lcs) in description logics is an inference task first introduced for sublanguages of CLASSIC. Roughly speaking, the lcs of a set of concept descriptions is the most specific concept description that subsumes all of the input descriptions. As such, the lcs allows to extract the commonalities from given concept descriptions, a task essential for several applications like, e.g., inductive learning, information retrieval, or the bottom-up construction of KR-knowledge bases. Previous work on the lcs has concentrated on description logics that either allow for number restrictions or for existential restrictions. Many applications, however, require to combine these constructors. In this work, we present an lcs algorithm for the description logic ALEN, which allows for both constructors (as well as concept conjunction, primitive negation, and value restrictions). The proof of correctness of our lcs algorithm is based on an appropriate structural characterization of subsumption in ALEN also introduced in this paper.
