Resumen
This thesis explores the notion of whether or not race is a determining factor in how African-Canadians perceive their subjective well-being. To this end, this study seeks to understand Blacks perception of what constitutes their identity and how they resist against minority consciousness. Also examined are their integration aspirations and the set of strategies they use to claim mobility status in mainstream North American society. The areas explored reflect interviewees' perceptions of the social factors that determine how they view their well-being. The data for this inquiry is gathered from in-depth interviews and focus group discussions. Data from focus groups, are discussions that I facilitated while working on the Montreal Black Communities Demographic Project. Empirical research is used to support the data at specific points.
Analysis of the data does not support the view that Blacks perceive their well-being as dependent on their status as racialized subjects. Research findings do however show that the social determinant of race has an impact on the strategies Blacks choose to obtain socio-economic status.

Paradoxical and anachronistic, the idea of a “romantic conceptualism” first appeared in 1977 in an article by Boris Groys dedicated to Muscovite artists imbued with Russian Idealism. Reexamined in the 2000s by Jörg Heiser and Jan Verwoert, the critical hypothesis was extended to take in the international Conceptual scene, where certain elements of the original German romanticism survived, such as collective writing, the fragmentary form or the Witz spirit. Against biography, subjectivity and expression, at the end of the 1960s Conceptual Art still showed itself to be virulently anti-Romantic. Defending an “emotionally dry” practice in which the idea would become “a machine that makes the art”, the movement echoed the Structuralists’ anti-Humanism as well as their putting to death of the author. Yet a frustrated existentialism persisted among certain artists who continued exploring the concepts of identity and intersubjectivity, in an epoch of capitalist systems and cybernetic networks. It is through linguistic explorations that the conceptual subject romanticises itself, rediscovering, through incoherencies in formal logic, the mysticism of combinational thoughts and from the ambiguity of irony, the benefits of a “non-governed language”

Launeanu, Mihaela Sorana. "The relationship between subjective age identity and personality variables across the adult lifespan". Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/2401.

Texto completo
Resumen
ABSTRACT The relationship between subjective age identity and ideal age, as measured by the Subjective Age Identity Scale (Hubley, 2004), and personality domains and facets, as measured by the NEO-PI-R (Costa & McCrae, 1992), was investigated in a sample of 210 adults ages 19 to 78. Subjective age and ideal age scores were regressed, using multiple standard regressions, on the NEO-PI-R domains and facets, respectively. Results indicated that 22% of the variance in subjective age identity scores was explained by personality domains whereas 27% was explained by personality facets. Specifically, two personality domains (Openness to Experience and Neuroticism) and one personality facet (Aesthetics) made significant unique contributions to the explained variance in subjective age scores. Very little variance in ideal age scores was explained by personality domains and facets (less than 10%). One domain (Openness to Experience) and two facets (Vulnerability to Stress and Values) made significant unique contributions to the explained variance in the ideal age scores. These findings are examined in the context of the previous research on the relationship between personality and subjective age and the importance of conducting both domain and facet level analyses when using the NEO-PI-R is discussed. Implications of the present findings for counselling and clinical work with persons facing age role transitions or other age related concerns (e.g., negative attitudes towards aging) are highlighted.

Resumen
The purpose of this study was to examine current kinesiology students' athletic identity, identity foreclosure, perceived task value in sport, and perfectionism. An online survey was distributed via email to current kinesiology students. The survey contained questions regarding demographic information and items from the Athletic Identity Measurement Scale, Extended Objective Measure of Ego Identity Status, Perceived Task Value in Sport, Sport Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale-2, and Multidimensional Inventory of Perfectionism in Sport. Results of the Pearson moment correlations indicated that the higher the athletic identity, the higher the subjective task value, identity foreclosure, perfectionistic strivings, and perfectionistic concerns. Multiple regression analyses were performed to further examine the predictive power of athletic identity, subjective task value, and identity foreclosure for perfectionistic strivings and perfectionistic concerns. Results indicated that athletic identity and subjective task value were significant predictors of perfectionistic strivings. Results also showed that athletic identity and identity foreclosure were significant predictors of perfectionistic concerns. Future research should replicate the study using participants from different geographical regions. Furthermore, future research should consider a longitudinal and qualitative study to investigate the development of subjective task value in sport.

Freynet, Nathalie. "Bilingualism in Minority Settings in Canada: Fusion or Assimilation?" Thesis, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/24359.

Texto completo
Resumen
Despite the prevalence of bilingual identity among linguistic minority youth in Canada, few studies have empirically investigated its acculturative consequences. This study explores the nature of bilingual identity, as determined by language confidence, in various ethnolinguistic contexts. More specifically, it investigates the relation between language confidence and identity as moderated by ethnolinguistic vitality. It also verifies whether bilinguals can be distinguished from predominantly unilingual participants on factors related to the maintenance of identity, namely subjective ethnolinguistic vitality and language usage and evaluates the impact of ethnolinguistic vitality on these differences. Data from the Survey on the Vitality of Official-Language Minorities collected by Statistics Canada among francophones outside of Quebec and anglophones in Quebec (N = 7377) was used for analysis. The results of univariate and multivariate analyses of variance show that language confidence is significantly related to levels of identity for all regions. Bilinguals are significantly distinct from predominantly monolingual participants on most factors for maintenance of identity. However, among all francophone samples, bilinguals most resemble the franco-dominant participants. The implications of these findings on the understanding of the nature of bilingual identity are discussed.

Sadjadi, Seyed Bakhtiar. "Investigating the subject's identity : the critical treatment of the Lacanian-Althusserian dialectic and subjectivity formation in James Joyce's 'A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man'". Thesis, University of Exeter, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10036/112123.

Texto completo
Resumen
Critically examining the Lacanian and Althusserian theories of the subject, this thesis explored the theoretical problems and methodological premises of a converged version of both theories. The central argument the present thesis seeks to demonstrate is that the Lacanian-Althusserian dialectic provides a more comprehensive and effective account of the process of the subject formation than a purely psychoanalytical or structuralist Marxist analysis of the term. After a critical study of the way the subject is positioned between language and ideology in contemporary critical theory the thesis proceeds to investigate the subject-object relation in the Cartesian and Hegelian subjects. Conceived of as the convergence of lack and material, the Lacanian-Althusserian dialectic focuses on the close affinity between the Lacanian notion of linguistic alienation and the Althusserian concept of ideological interpellation. The subject’s alienation with what is called in the thesis ‘ideological signifier’ is considered as the result of direct and dramatic modes of interpellation in both language acquisition process and the mature phase. The major theoretical premises of this model include the following: first, identity functions through, and because of, the ‘inter-subjective dialectic’ and an ‘intra-subjective lack.’ Identity is never fully constituted because of this antagonism, and thus remains ‘incomplete.’ Secondly, the subject is ideologically constituted through language. The mechanism through which both language and ideology construct a subject never permits the subject enjoying a state of full identity with ideological signifiers. Thirdly, the subject’s identity is represented in the language exposed to and, later, reproduced by him/her. In order to demonstrate a practical reading of subjectivity formation in terms of this critical approach the present research applies it to James Joyce’s A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man (1916). The process of the subject formation has been analysed through the subject’s alienation/interpellation by the ISAs. Also, the inter-subjective dialectic between different subjectivities of the subject’s identity has been investigated. The thesis demonstrates that identity reconstruction represented in the novel is a complicated and ongoing process, which begins with disillusionment, goes through materialization of epiphany, and ends with inventiveness in language. This process has been represented as a move from ideological to non-ideological subjectivity through artistic creativity. The exploration of the aesthetics of language is crucial to the analysis of the reconstruction of Stephen Dedalus’ identity in that it happens in and through language.

Resumen
Young adulthood is a crucial period for identity development, and an unclear sense of identity has been associated with deleterious psychological and social outcomes (Kroger & Marcia, 2011). Young adults have also identified self-sufficiency, including financial independence, as an essential aspect associated with attaining adulthood (Arnett, 2000). However, current realities such as global economic uncertainty and a shift toward greater personal responsibility for financial security may threaten the successful attainment of these essential goals (Furstenberg, Rumbaut, & Settersten, 2005). Hence, I explored identity formation (Erikson, 1950, 1968) in the domain of finance. Four socialization factors (perceived parental SES, parental financial communication, formal financial education, and high school work experience) and three beliefs (attitudes, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control) were used to predict financial identity (achievement, foreclosure, moratorium, and diffusion) in a sample of college students (N = 2,098) who were surveyed at two time points approximately 2.5 years apart. Four models were tested using structural equation modeling (SEM). First, using crossectional data, I tested the extent to which socialization factors and financial beliefs predicted financial identity. I found support for 79% of the hypothesized associations between the variables. Second, using crossectional data, I examined the degree to which financial beliefs mediated the association between socialization factors and financial identity. Findings indicated that financial beliefs partially mediated the association between parental financial communication and financial identity. Third, using longitudinal data, Time 1 (T1) socialization factors and T1 beliefs were used to predict Time 2 (T2) financial identity. As expected, T1 financial identity was the most robust predictor of T2 financial identity. After controlling for T1 financial identity, T1 variables were most predictive of changes in T2 foreclosure: Increases in foreclosure were predicted by perceived parental SES, parental communication, formal education, and subjective norms. Finally, T1 financial beliefs were allowed to mediate the association between T1 socialization factors and T2 financial identity. I found no evidence of mediation using longitudinal data. Findings from this study suggest that identity formation within the financial domain is consistent with identity formation in other recognized identity domains.

Resumen
The purpose of this research was to examine the relationship between athletic identity and two variables from the expectancy-value theory, expectations for success and subjective task value, in the context of high school soccer competitive team selection. The quantitative research design integrated historical and emerging theoretical perspectives on identity development in an effort to add insight to the relationships between the theoretical perspectives. The quasi-experimental research design included the self-administration of paper and pencil questionnaires on three occasions over the course of approximately four weeks. Males and females competing for selection to their high school soccer teams in Central Florida comprised the study sample. Significant positive correlations were found between participantsâ athletic identity, expectations for success and subjective task value throughout competitive team selection. Participantsâ athletic identity remained relatively stable over time; yet, significant increases in expectations for success and significant decreases for subjective task value were detected. Additional findings were: the varsityâs athletic identity and expectations for success were significantly higher than junior varsity and not selected groups; the female junior-varsityâs subjective task value was significantly lower than female-varsity and male-junior varsity groups; seniors reported higher expectations for success than freshmen; the upper division reported higher expectations for success than the lower division, whereas, the lower division reported higher subjective task value than the upper division. In consideration of the studyâs limitations, recommendations for the field and for future research are provided. The findings provide a basis to forge an empirical connection between the construct of athletic identity and the expectancy-value theory model of achievement-related behavior in a sports domain. Moreover, the lack of significant gender differences may indicate that socially supportive environments may foster female athleticism, including confirmation of athletic identity and sport-related expectations for success.

In childcare places, the clinical psychologist can hear the disarry of the woman who has become mother. In a society that celebrate individualism, how will this psychoanalytic listening help the mother in her loneliness? Many separations will come in her mother’s life hence intense psychic work to access maternity and engage the subjective process of motherhood. At this stage, the psychic crushed by states of anxiety and emptiness, can immobilize the ego in a narcissistic and deadly retreat enclosing the mother in a deadly loneliness, hence the choice of my title “The feeling of loneliness in the test of maternity”.At this crucial stage in their own development and that of their child, to feel so lonely for these mothers can cause harm. Most of the time, we aknowledge on it can be seen that the subjective processes of motherhood are found to be fruitful and beneficial for the mother ego and that identity turn non suitable. However, we observe that the subjective feeling of loneliness can be destructive. The stage where the transition from being a woman to becoming a mother can being in pain. The interiority of the woman evolves ans transforms into becoming a mother. This interiority can be undermined by the presence of the real and fantasy child. These last resonate with his own infantile story. This interiority it reveals itself in the form of a subjective feeling of loneliness that is difficult to live, which drive to narcissistic and objectal pathology, creating of crisis situation unexpected. This work has the main purpose of showing the dead ends of these processes, as well as the difficult access to an area of loneliness source of subjectivation and creativity

Majudith, Nadira. "Applying the Theory of Planned Behaviour with the addition of role-identity to predict lecture attendance behaviour". Master's thesis, Faculty of Commerce, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/31401.

Texto completo
Resumen
This study aimed to investigate the behaviour of lecture attendance amongst undergraduate students at the University of Cape Town (UCT) by applying the Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB). A total of 169 respondents completed either a hard copy or online survey whilst meeting the inclusion criteria. The sample consisted of students from a first-year mathematics course (which had compulsory lecture attendance for registered students) and from a first-year organisational psychology course (which had voluntary lecture attendance for registered students). The study aimed to broaden the limited knowledge which exists around the perceptions of students regarding lecture attendance specifically in a South African context. Confirmatory Factor Analysis, Exploratory Factor Analysis and reliability analyses strongly supported the application of the TPB model scales and role-identity scale. Regression analysis showed that only attitudes help to predict intention towards lecture attendance behaviour where subjective norms, perceived behavioural control and role-identity were not significant predictors. Intentions were also seen to be highly correlated to actual attendance behaviour as well as helping to predict actual attendance behaviour. Actual behavioural control (ABC) was not seen as a moderator between intention and actual lecture attendance. Practical and theoretical implications were discussed. The information generated by this study can be used to further understand the occurrence of, and students’ perceptions of lecture attendance.

This thesis is a story in which the researcher is involved personally, intellectually and emotionally. "Story" is the appropriate term because the researcher’s life experience and the topic of this thesis are closely tied up. It essentially presents a teaching adventure of French as a foreign language (FFL) in a high school in Shanghai (China), an adventure that has the term "intercultural" as its keyword. For 10 months, I conducted an ethnographic study from a research-action approach at Lycée Guangming de Shanghai, where French is taught as the first foreign language. What are the different measures to implement a so-called intercultural approach within an FLL course in a Chinese school context? How can interculturality raise the students' awareness of the richness of cultural diversity and make the target language a valuable language? In what way does the intercultural approach promote a process of decentralization and present otherness from a perspective of "humanism of diversity"? The researcher’s storytelling, description and reflection on his teaching experiences in the FLL classroom will shed light on these issues. Within a particular cultural context, this story is based on an ethnographic study that shows the specific characteristics of a Chinese high school and the Chinese school system. An attempt to “anthropologize” the education to link the Chinese culture with intercultural practices has been made. This thesis also focuses on the main characters of this story: the students and the researcher himself. What impact does intercultural practice have on students? In what way has this pedagogical approach caused a reflective change in FFL learners? The answers to these questions will be addressed through the thematic analysis of the interviews and the students’ reflective writing. To what extent did the research work entail a process of self-discovery and self-renewal for the researcher? This will be explained at the end of this story in which the researcher has reflected upon himself and progressively discovered his identity. The ethnographic, educational, personal and reflective dimensions are, hence, the different elements that build up this story

Resumen
This thesis explores the lived experience of those with Bipolar Disorder type I or type II condition. The aim is to delineate how individuals cope following the diagnosis of this chronic, recurrent mental illness. Twenty participants were interviewed in depth, producing 18 hours of recordings and 480 pages of transcript. Narrative data were thematically analysed to reveal themes common to the process of adaptation. The exploratory framework identified key elements of the lived experience of bipolar disorder, including: the phenomenology of highs and lows, the role of anxiety in triggering episodes, reactions to diagnosis, and issues with prescribed medications. Analyses highlighted how difficult it is for individuals to reconcile themselves to the symptoms and consequences of the illness, and also illustrated the extent of subjective distress and reduced quality of life incurred. The psychosocial burden, particularly the difficulties developing a sense of authenticity and coherent identity, and having to adjust life goals, were examined in detail. Negative coping behaviours, specifically the use of alcohol and drugs, as well as the influence of shame and guilt on peoples??? coping repertoires were also explored. Finally, the importance of psychosocial interventions, collaborative health care strategies and necessity for long-term, follow-up care were emphasised.

Resumen
Eccles' expectancy-value model of achievement motivation suggests that beliefs about ability and expectations for success are a strong predictor of grades and differences in task value underlie differences in motivation and achievement. This model has not been previously investigated in the context of high stakes examinations in the UK and this study therefore explores the relationships between expectations, values and A-level achievement in 930 students. This is important given the significance of these qualifications for future life pathways. Furthermore, studies examining the subjective task value (STV) patterns across school subjects, rather than domain specific ones, are rare, highlighting the additional importance of this work. A mixed methods design was used. A questionnaire collected information on a student's background (SES, gender, ethnicity), the expectations and STV attached to A-levels, and their future and general life expectations and values. Some of these relationships were also explored using 20 semi-structured interviews. The qualitative data illustrated that studying A-levels confirmed aspects of students' identity but also facilitated changes to their goals and academic skills, having positive effects, contrary to the argument that high stakes assessment has a negative impact on individuals. Unsurprisingly parents and teachers were perceived to be influential. As predicted, expectations and values were related to A-level achievement. As there is a lack of research into the effects of these variables on A-level outcomes these findings are valuable. Eccles' original three factor model of STV could not, however, be supported. In this research the utility construct was removed. Further exploration of the STV construct is warranted. Socio-economic status was positively related to both achievement and expectations about achievement. Girls had lower expectations but placed higher value on their A-levels. There were, however, no gender differences in achievement. Employing the expectancy-value model in this UK context has been useful in explaining the motivational patterns underlying A-level qualifications and the findings have implications for enhancing outcomes and narrowing educational gaps in this student population.

The doctoral research focuses on nursing beginners’professional identity feeling. It questions subjective experience about starting and enlightens the relations between identity dynamics (Kaddouri, 2006) during this transition (Guichard, 2007) and the emergence of the beginner’s professionalism. The qualitative methodology, in a psychophenomenology approach (Vermersch, 2012), questions personal subject logic in these moments (Mouchet, 2014) ; it mainly relies on concepts of identity feeling (Erikson, 1968; Allport, 1970; Tap, 1988) and emerging professionalism (Jorro, 2011).The longitudinal study is based on comprehensive interviews (Kaufmann, 2014), elicitation interviews (Vermersch, 1994) completed with the decryption of meanings (Faingold, 2011) and biographical interviews combined with elicitation (Lesourd, 2009).The results reveal a professional identity feeling which emerges among the beginners, and which is useful to develop their specific emerging beginning professionalism, and help to reconsider the professional accompaniment

Resumen

The aim of this study is to investigate the components of religion and spirituality in the specific context of "Fryshuset" – a multicultural and glocal arena. Against the backdrop of contemporary researchers such as Heelas and Woodhead and their hypothesis about the "spiritual revolution" and a "new spirituality", as well as the postmodern discussion about "the return of God", this study discusses how religious change can be understood in the context of Fryshuset.

The theoretical point of departure is taken in a hermeneutical method where Fleck´s theory about "thought-collective" and Gidden´s theory about the "duality of structure" are used in order to understand and describe the dialectical relationship between individual and social structure.

The method used in this study is qualitative. The interviews are made of six individuals representing different social projects at Fryshuset.

By analyzing the material from the field study through theories on religious change, three areas are identified:

  1. "The subjective turn"
  2. Religion and spirituality
  3. A Cosmopolitan interpretation of life

The result of this study is that the religiosity among the interviewed can be described through Taylor’s understanding of the "subjective turn". Furthermore they are also part of a "double subjective turn" understood as an internalized subjective turn. Despite the fact that a lot of what the informants describe corresponds to Heelas and Woodheads theories of "subjective life spirituality" it is not relevant to talk about a "spiritual revolution". However, according to Beckford´s theories about religion as a "cultural resource" it can be described as a kind of new spirituality which is used in order to act and think global. The individuals use religion and spirituality as a cultural resource in their formation of a larger cosmopolitan interpretation of life.

Trodd, Lyn. "Professional learning for Children's Centre leaders". Thesis, University of Hertfordshire, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/2299/10430.

Texto completo
Resumen
This thesis investigates the experiences of Children’s Centre leaders of the National Professional Qualification in Integrated Centre Leadership (NPQICL) who find themselves in a newly developed role and lacking a professional identity. Its aim is to explore the developing professional identities of NPQICL participants from their own perspectives, focusing on ways in which their professional identities are developing and how, correspondingly, these might be better supported on the NPQICL. Clarification of core ideas embedded in these aims theoretically and conceptually reveals that professions are publicly shaped in line with established traditions, and therefore often prescribed. Processes of professional development are correspondingly seen as largely publicly organised processes of professional learning and/or acculturation. However, a key area for research is the interface between publicly shaped expectations of those learning to be professionals and the particular needs and expectations of course participants themselves especially with regard to how they see themselves as Children’s Centre leaders. Because this area is fluid, uncertain and shaped partly by professionals themselves it is hard to investigate. A flexible Adaptive Theory research design is selected along with an array of conceptual tools (orienting concepts and a conceptual cluster) which can be modified, discarded or replaced according to the demands of data collected. Using a relatively open-ended data collection device also allows a wide range of potentially revealing data to be ‘storied’ for analysis in order to preserve their individualised nature. Although a process of subjective self-conceptualisation in role can be used to explain how NPQICL participants adapt to expectations from the wider professional community and social context, there is a need to explain how public influences and individual co-constructions of professional identity shaped by professionals themselves are synthesised in individual responses to fluid, uncertain professional identities. The research aims are met by modelling the process of developing a professional identity on the NPQICL as an ‘autobiography’. This conceptual device brings together public and individual influences into a synthesis and allows insight into the experiences of individuals. It explains some of the success of the NPQICL course and some of its dynamics including how the development of Children’s Centre leaders’ identities can be supported in a professional learning programme.

Resumen
Philosophiae Doctor - PhD (Education)
The World Health Organisation defines mental health as "a state of well-being in which the individual realizes her or his own abilities, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to her or his community" (WHO, 2001, p. 1). There is a paucity of academic research about the mental health status of minority groups, especially women of colour (Moultrie & Kleintjes, 2006). In South Africa too, this gap in research is evident when focussing on the mental health of women, especially Coloured women in South Africa. Women's health and their mental health in particular are often affected by the way society treats and regards them; often they suffer from emotional, mental and physical exhaustions. This study investigated the mental health status of Coloured female teachers working in historically disadvantaged Special Schools in the Cape Metropole of the Western Cape Education Department. This group designation is the designation that was formally used during South Africa's Apartheid past policies of segregation in categorising groups according to pre-determined race categories. Coloureds where then considered to be a minority grouping in South Africa. Reference is still currently made in democratic South Africa to the Apartheid race categorisations in contemporary formal policies that seek to redress the inequities of the past, both in terms of race as well as gender categories (Conway-Smith, 2011; Stromquist, 1998). Given the intimate association between race and identity, especially within a socio-historical context such as that of South Africa, it is reasonable to consider the impact of this association on an individual's mental health status.

In this thesis, we propose a study of political phenomena in the mohawk reservation of Kahnawake in Canada. We base our interrogation on data crossed between symbolism and praxis, the perceived and the experienced and the pragmatic dimensions supported by different aspects of material culture. This project of political anthropology which makes ontologies, subjectification phenomena and practices the central theme of its research, invites us to invest normative and ideational frameworks as much as the structural dynamics that animate the community and its different institutions. We wish to detach ourselves from studies that base themselves on paradigms built from such antagonistic dyads as tradition/modernity, authenticity/rupture, etc. Furthermore, we have broken off from works that essentially point to the functional aspects of the political and the institutional. In closely tightening up this vast ensemble that embraces a variety of fields, we postulate the existence of a coherent social, political and spiritual mechanism, able to espouse the irregular curves of this population’s life, marked by the sharp angles drawn by colonization and its consequences

This thesis offers a critical study of the novels of the Colombian writer Mario Mendoza, in particular of his period known as “The Descent into Hell (1992-2011)”, composed of eight novels. The methodology is based on a thematic analysis and a transdisciplinary interweaving of literature, psychoanalysis, and philosophy. Starting from the notion of subjectivity, understood from the perspective of psychoanalysis and the construction of a po-ethics of evil, it is proposed to make operational the concept of the subjective detective as a device of analysis in order to demonstrate how subjectivity and the po-ethics of evil are a basis for the narrative identity deployed in the author's work. This research is developed in three parts: “Mario Mendoza or the duty to inscribe degraded realism”, “Subjectivity and crimes in Mario Mendoza's novels”, and finally “Remembering through fiction, or the work of making fiction in spite of memory”. Finally, this work undertakes research about the political repercussions of Mendoza’s novels as a po-ethical practice encouraging a particular mode of resistance against the imperatives of the time that configure its conditions of emergence

This thesis deals with the legacy inherited from the generations after the arrival of the first migrants from the Maghreb and more broadly from the Islamic world. The immigrant is an exile of the womb, difficult living conditions led him to go and seek elsewhere, to go into exile. Once on the coasts of the Occident his world is called into question. Particularly with the emergence of the object « a » frequently hidden under a veil on the lands of Islam. Desire and temptations lead to a trauma due to the turmoil in the speech of the Other in oneself...The word of the Other befalls as a predestination. For the heir to the exile this question becomes more marked, as Lacan says « the unconscious is the desire of the Other », something is imparted beyond the message… the wrench of the exile is transmitted and the physical exile comes and covers the exile of the language

The social and professional integration process appears to reactivate exclusion related psychological troubles, defined as the « narcissistic disturbances of the sense of identity » (R. Roussillon) revealing a « topical collapse » (C. Janin) between the « the inter- and trans-subjective and the intra-psychic spaces » (R. Kaës). The role of the clinical psychologist is to propose clinical settings capable of ridding this process of the negative effects of traumatic repetition. The author, based on 20 years of clinical experience in Missions Locales, social structures for reintegration which welcome more than 1.2 million young people in France every year, proposes the deployment in these institutions of orioplastic settings. The notion of « orioplasty » is borrowed from the artist A.Stella who derives the terms from the Greek words orio (limit) and plassein (to shape or mold). The study of three tightly linked protocols, one for individuals and two for groups, simultaneously highlights their characteristics involving space and time, conferring them with the quality of a « pliable medium » (R. Roussillon, M. Milner), and the processes, both psychological and social, involving a « dual mental linking process » (C. Vacheret), in reference to the « double limit » of A. Green, that they permit to establish. Thus, the author raises the question of a new stage in public sector psychiatry which would consist of going into the institutions of social integration in order to better take into account the problems of social insecurity and exclusion, and addresses the question of the conditions and the limits involved in this new approach

Kossoy, Alicia.

This thesis aims at deconstructing the concept of "young poor", based on the analysis of identity issues in urban, working-class youth in Argentina in the early twenty-first century. To this end, it analyzes the tensions between three key elements of the social dynamic. The first element is the inflicted look (the identity one constructs from other’s look). The second element is the social conditioning (inherited capital in the cultural, social and economic sense). The third element is young people’s aspirations (the identity they aim at). The analysis of their "subjective paths" is supported by a description of their "relational transactions" and "biographical transaction". It explores the identity-building process within the institutions invested by young people: school, family and work. The social inclusion process is seen in a new way, emphasizing the changes and continuities in popular culture. Breaking with the previous generation, the middle school has become a reference range in the socialization of the working class youth. By their mode of experiencing schooling – with discontinuous cycles longer spells – the school institution itself has been transformed. The results found here contradict the thesis of disaffiliation and breaking of social ties. We find a strong social inclusion of young people within their families: solidarity within the family is strong. The work has not lost its centrality, which takes a central place in the construction of the social identities of popular youth, against the theses on the peak of the non-travail culture and dependence on public assistance

Previous research has discovered that most 18-to-25 year olds do not feel they have reached the rite of passage known as adulthood. This period of development, termed “emerging adulthood”, is characterized by identity exploration and myriad possibilities related to who one is and what one wants out of life. Empirical evidence suggests that future goals linked to one’s identity are more likely to be obtained through three actions specified in the Selection-Optimization-Compensation (S.O.C.) model: selecting goals to focus one’s resources, optimizing goal-relevant means, and, when necessary, compensating for losses that may occur in these means. The purpose of this study was (a) to identify the proportions of 18-to-25 year old perceived adults vs. emerging adults in a university sample (n = 828); (b) to assess the degree to which self-reported perceived adult status distinguishes self-reports of achieved adult criteria, goal-pursuit strategies, and subjective well-being, and; (c) to determine the predictive utility of perceived adult status, background characteristics, and goal-pursuit strategies for understanding individual differences in life satisfaction, positive affect (i.e., subjective vitality), and negative affect (i.e., depressive symptoms). Analyses of on-line survey responses indicated that approximately one-fourth (24%) of participants reported they had reached adulthood, and, compared to their emerging adult peers, had achieved more criteria for adulthood and were using more effective goal-pursuit strategies. Step-wise multiple regression analyses revealed that specific background characteristics (e.g., relationship status and GPA) and goal-pursuit strategies (e.g., optimization) were significant and strongest predictors of the participants’ life satisfaction, positive affect, and negative affect. Perceived adult status was a significant moderate predictor of both life satisfaction and positive affect but was unrelated to negative affect. Implications of the findings for developmental researchers, educators, and practitioners are discussed.

This poststructuralist research into managerial subjectivity follows ten senior managers’ experience, during significant organizational restructuring in the National Health Service. Located in the North of England the managers were interviewed three times during an eighteen-month period. An autoethnographic component is integral to the study; this recognises the researcher was a practising manager undergoing the same organizational change, whilst researching the field. Judith Butler’s theories provide the principle theoretical framework for the study. Whilst the managers narrated a fantasy of having a ‘true’ and coherent self, the research illustrated how fragile, fleeting and temporary each managerial self is and how passionately attached to their managerial subjectivity (despite how painful) they were. Emotion is presented as inextricably tied up with gender performativity and managerial subjectivity; despite best efforts the emotional ‘dirt’ of organizations cannot be ordered away; there is a constant seepage and spillage of emotion – as illustrated in the vignettes and profiled in the Butlerian deconstruction. During organizational change there was a fear of a social (organizational) death and even the most senior of managers were profoundly vulnerable. This fear and vulnerability heightened in contact with others perceived as more powerful (in critical conversations and interviews). Failure to receive the desired recognition and the risk of being organizationally unintelligible compounded this vulnerability and triggered recurrent, unpredictable patterns of loss, ek-stasis and unravelling of the managerial self. This acute vulnerability during restructuring anticipates and therefore (re) enacts a Machiavellian discourse, one that excuses unethical behaviour and relations as a ‘necessary evil’.

Resumen
This study examines the association between collective identification with a rural communityfrom the northern coast of Peru, and the subjective, psychological and social expressions of well-being. These variables were analyzed in a sample of 80 community residents. Resultsshow significant associations between some components of collective identification and some expressions of well-being. A path analysis suggest that the general positive self-stereotype has a positive effect on collective self-esteem, while the self-stereotype of low efficacy reduces it. Meanwhile, collective self-esteem increases the degree of identification. Self-stereotype components influence different expressions of well-being. Thus, self-stereotype of low efficacy negatively affects social well-being, and self-stereotype of corruption negatively affects psychological well-being. Finally, social well-being influences psychological well-being, which in turn influences subjective well-being.

Starting from historical hermeneutical presuppositions and therefore a redefinition of poetical modernity,we demonstrate that the works of Ernst Meister (1911-1979) follow the poetical lineage defined by its problematic, subjective and discursive identity constitution, the conceptual and structural frameworks of which are respectively those of F. Schiller and F. Hölderlin. .

This research is dedicated to the professional identities of military engineers in both engineering corps of the "Délégation générale pour l'armement" (DGA) - the "Ingénieurs des études et techniques d'armement" (IETA) and the "Ingénieurs de l'armement" (IA) - in the contemporary context of profound change in institutional identity and more generally of destabilization of previous forms of collective bodies and identification of established roles. In addition to providing knowledge on their roles, functions and careers, it aims to identify, through an analysis of the mechanisms of identity construction in an interactionist perspective, the different modalities of accession to the dimensions of the engineering profession and the values which it proffers at the same time as forms of attachment to the military institution. Essentially based on a series of biographical interviews, the results of this research show that the military engineers indifferently refer to several exclusive professional models based in part on their degree of militarity (references to the military, world and / or that of the engineer) and their adherence to the successful values largely conveyed m engineering schools m France, Ultimately, the disparities seen in the construction and development of professional identities of military engineers depend on unique biographical trajectories and the relationships they establish with structural, situational, personal and social factors

Minet, Alain.

The handicap challenges the parental project in its psychic and social dimensions: the continuity of oneself through his/her child is largely thwarted: the narcissistic benefits of the parenthood are not met, and the expected change of status of a social advancement reverses in social decline. The parent then starts a deep psychic and social reshuffling. A self- image and an identity are to be rebuilt, to try to mobilize a prominent social signification: a good parent responsible for his child. It is at the heart of the subject, its history, its identifications, the psychic, representative and emotional conflict, towards the non-desired object that the parent tries to build this good parent who takes care of his handicapped child. The analysis concerns, at first, associations which were created in the middle of the last century and which then merged in an important federation of associations managing establishments for the mentally handicapped, the UNAPEI. These associations were the melting pot of the construction of a collective identity. One sees, through a socio-historical analysis, the signification of the good parent loving his child will constitute an helpful and salutary image for the stripped parent. In a second time, the analysis of individual interviews highlights how the figure of a good social parent, loving and responsible which weaves the now dominant imaginary significance allows the parent, to find a way to rebuild itself in a possible conflict which does not assign him to a non-desired, a rejected or an impossible to invest in parenthood

Our presence from 1990 to 2010 as a social worker in Beaubreuil, district of the city of Limoges, Haute-Vienne, allowed us to support, observe and take part for over twenty years in the Vietnamese migration processes. All this time, we noted from a psychological perspective, that ruptures, resulting from the exile, then from the culture shock, were born by contacts with the host society, have given rise to individuals, complex problems including identity ones. In exile, to face the psychosocial risks caused by the instability of their psychic structure and their cultural system, the Vietnamese have invested public and private areas offered by the host culture. These approaches, multiple, allowed them in the redevelopment of these areas, to find, to recreate the elements perceived by them as fundamental in their native culture, necessary and essential to their work of psychic restructuring. In France, the cultural injunction of religious altars development in the private sphere has led them to reinterpret in a subjective way the question of the different components of their identity personal and social, cultural and religious The interactions between the native culture injunction and the space proposed by the host culture has engaged transformations, changes in the elaboration of religious altars. In that way, they are reflecting and are forming analyzers, particularly relevant to us, the intercultural exchange process

This thesis deals with sex and gender concepts in relationship to both social judgments and the gender self-concept. The first research includes two studies and deals with intergroup sex representations among a student population. The first study shows an asymmetry of the explanatory function of male and female group representations, which appears to be linked to the asymmetry of status between men and women. The second study criticizes those results, using the ego-ecological model (Zavalloni et Louis-Guérin, 1984; Zavalloni, 2007) through an adaptation of the first phases of the IMIS tool. As a conclusion, these results are questioned especially in the framework of a relativization of the expectations of the theory of the dominant and dominated groups (Lorenzi-Cioldi, 1988 ; 2002). The second research includes two studies and deals with the effect of social context on gender self-concept and social judgments among a population of mountain sports people. The third study thus shows the context sensitive variability of the mobilization of the feminine and masculine roles (Bem, 1974) in relation to gender self-concept. The fourth study focuses on the context sensitive variation of the sexed representations and the approval of the other sports people among this same population. Finally, the third research, through a case study, deals with the psychosocial anchorage of gender identity and with some subjective modalities of its contribution to people existential projects

The purpose of this study is to question the classical point of view about immigrant children in france. It gives the explanation of their situation in terms of acculturation, personal and cultural identity conflicts, social and psychopathology. The author puts forward the concept of "interculturation" defined as an acculturative bi-enculturation" and tries to do an analysis of some immigrants children speech. By refering to the s. Freud and j. Lacan psychoanalytic concepts, the analysis consists of drawing their subjective positions in relation to the alienant choice concerning their "cultural identity". This is where they face the common but irreducible experience of their splitting as a subject and their lack of being. Intercultural and symbolic structuration possibility is also studied

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a sudden traumatic event which generally concerns young adults. After the accident and their exit from the hospital, the injured experience a true rupture of their life. In the most severe brain injuries, they present disabilities like physical disorders, but it is the handicap known as "hidden (invisible)" that causes the more difficulties in their daily lives. This research relates to the study of the subjective quality of life of the brain-injured, evaluated by an international scale - the QOLIBRI - specific to the brain injury. Our main objective consists in studying, on one hand, the quality of life evaluated by the QOLIBRI in its validated French version and, on the other hand, its correlations with the psychopathological state of the injured, the coping strategies to the handicap and the identity rebuilding. The secondary objective is to propose an operating model of psychotherapy of the brain-injured. The present research makes it possible to point out the bonds between subjective quality of life, psychopathology (depression, anxiety, alexithymy, anosognosy, decline of self-esteem), coping strategies and psychotherapy. The absence of emotional disorders, the choice of adaptive and effective coping strategies, as well as psychotherapy, are factors which have a positive impact on the subjective quality of life of the injured and the identity rebuilding of those
