Resumen
Emerging research suggests that planners and policy makers should explore the expanded role Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) plays in promoting innovation and economic growth. TOD station characteristics including accessibility, walkability, density, and mixed uses may create environments beneficial for creative and knowledge industries. However, the evidence linking place to productivity, as measured by firm sales volume is lacking. Using cluster analysis and Propensity Score Matching for national-level data, this research tests these relationships. Findings indicate that firms located in dense, mixed use, and walkable TODs with higher levels of activity experience increased sales. Hence, TOD and knowledge-based economic development strategies should be planned in tandem to maximize outcomes.

Resumen
This essay addresses the effects and experiences that become possible, and become the object of fascination and reflection, when early German radio mobilized-when it moved out of the studio to transmit from places in the "outside world." Mobile electro-acoustic technologies enabled a new sense of exteriority and new experiences of time and space. The paper reconstructs and analyzes three rhetorical figures associated with this mobilized radio. First, the complex concept of actuality, among other things, referred to temporal liveness and the palpable auditory presence of location sound. Second, the popular rhetorical and visual image of the "traveling microphone," emphasized new relations of inside and outside, studio and world, reality and representation. Third, comparisons between radio and film-including the term "radio-film," an early name for live location broadcasts-provided a vocabulary for understanding the properties of a mobile radio, including the intense sense of an outside world made present for the listener at home.

Resumen
Firm birth and firm closure are two interrelated dynamics relevant to measuring economic growth, yet most studies focus on firm birth only. Public transportation infrastructure may facilitate firm birth, but it may also avert firm closure through improved accessibility that can consequently lead to increased local density hence agglomeration economies. This study analyzes firm births and firm closures using the National Establishment Time Series (NETS) panel data from Maryland from 1991 to 2009. By examining both birth and closure patterns, this study estimates the likelihood of firm retention for areas in proximity to passenger rail stations of multiple levels of maturity, while controlling for a number of potentially confounding factors. Positive and statistically significant relationships are found between proximity to the passenger rail stations and the rates of firm births in Maryland, regardless of differences in the level of maturity of stations. From 1991 to 2009, areas within close proximity to passenger rail stations in Maryland experienced a wide range of rates of growth in firm density, depending on the year of station opening. The results suggest that well after the introduction of rail stations, areas near passenger rail stations gain belated economic benefits shown by higher likelihood of firm retention around the mature rail stations opened before 1990. In comparison, areas near the less mature stations that opened after 1990 had predominantly lower likelihood of firm retention. Planners and policymakers should be proactive in directing development near rail stations by adopting a variety of measures and policies that support or are at least consistent with transit-oriented development (TOD).

Resumen
Christian Petzold’s Transit confronts viewers with a series of traditional binaries: individual and social, past and present, image and word, local and global, waiting and acting, and subjection and sovereignty. Its audiovisual and narrational strategies for negotiating these polar categories and relating them to the characters’ narratives introduce questions of what it means to be human within the hierarchies of deservingness that constitute not only international politics but also our intimate, personal interactions. Exploring Georg’s varied responses to the suffering of others, the film implicitly intervenes in debates about the politics of compassion and juggles questions such as those posed by Judith Butler as to how we might create a world that is inhabitable for everyone. The film asks what it means to exist in relation to others at both micro (social, interpersonal, ethical) and macro (political, governmental, legal) levels and what it means to lose those others. Ultimately, I argue, Transit is an elegy that functions as a kind of literal Trauerarbeit, an affective labour in which viewers remember the past but are afforded no reassurance that the present is better.

Resumen
This article examines the impact of Phoenix’s light rail system, which opened in 2008, on new firm formation in specific industries. Individual business data from 1990–2014 are used in a quasi-experimental adjusted-interrupted time series (AITS) regression to compare the impact of the transit system’s construction on new business starts in ‘treatment’ and ‘control’ areas before and after the opening of the line. Findings show that the transit adjacency is worth an 88% increase in knowledge sector new starts, a 40% increase in service sector new starts and a 28% increase in retail new starts at the time the system opened, when compared with automobile-accessible control areas. However, the light rail also appears to suffer from a ‘novelty factor’– after the initial increase in new establishment activity in adjacent block groups, the effect diminishes at the rate of 8%, 6% and 7% per year, respectively. The results also provide insight into the spatial extent of light rail impacts to new business formation, with areas 1 mile from stations observing 21% fewer retail new business starts and 12% fewer knowledge sector new starts than areas within a quarter of a mile of stations.

Resumen
Geography of innovation, creative clustering, urban buzz and innovation districts are place-based concepts that have emerged as a result of the US economy’s transformation to knowledge-intensive economies. The notable built environment characteristics of these concepts are spatial clustering, walkability and proximity to urban amenities, diversity, regional connectivity and agglomeration. While several of these characteristics have been associated with urban sprawl in previous studies, there is a lack of direct evidence on how urban sprawl affects innovation productivity. This national study seeks to examine the relationship between urban sprawl, place-based characteristics and innovation productivity. We used Multilevel Modelling to account for built environment characteristics at both neighbourhood and regional levels. We found that innovative firms tend to locate more in census tracts that are less compact but offer spatial proximity to firms in related business sectors. This is likely due to the higher land and property value in compact areas, which could make it unaffordable for small businesses. We also found that the regional compactness positively and significantly affects the number of innovative firms. This is likely due to the role of compact regions in supporting public transit investments, enhancing social capital and reducing poverty and racial segregation.

Resumen
Forest fires are a major reason behind forest degradation and have wide ranging adverse ecological, economic and social impacts, including loss of valuable timber resources, degradation of catchment areas, loss of biodiversity and extinction of plants and animals. In the recent times forests of Amazon and Australia faced a serious a threat to both wildlife and mankind. It also caused an enormous loss to both the countries. This paper describes early detection of fire by sectionally dividing the forest for efficient monitoring. The flame sensor is used to detect fire and a drone is employed as a mobile object which monitors the respective section. This drone travels from one pole to a different every alternate hour and gets charged while it's on a pole, because the pole has solar array. There is a timer also used at the poles which indicate the time of arrival and time of departure of the drone. The transponders are accustomed receive and transmit the signals. By this detection the nearby department of local government can get the precise location of the wildfire and early measures will be taken accordingly

Resumen
Though texts are commonly perceived as merely written, this article explores texts in a more complex manner: in digital form. First, the paper posits the importance of “reading” digital texts (e.g., social media, films, memes, etc.) and demonstrates how such texts transmit hegemonic ideas about race and whiteness, which ultimately reifies white supremacy in society. Using a variety of critical theories such as critical studies of whiteness and critical theories of race, this article deconstructs digital texts (particularly film and social media) to demonstrate how whiteness gets embedded in digital text in almost invisible ways. Additionally, this article employs Yosso’s (2002) critical race media literacy (CRML) not only to divulge racial stereotypes in digital texts but also to demonstrate how CRML can be pedagogically and metacognitively applied to reveal how whiteness also gets embedded in digital texts. This article serves as a metacognitive model as to how readers can learn to read whiteness within digital texts.

Resumen
This study is an investigation in and through media arts practice. It set out to develop a novel type of new media artistic praxis built upon concepts drawn from the disciplines of scientific and cultural ecology. The rationale for this research was based upon my observation as a practising new media artist that existing praxis in the new media domain appeared to operate largely without awareness of the ecological implications of those practices. The thesis begins by explaining key concepts of ecology, spanning the arts and the sciences. It then outlines the thinking of contemporary theorists who propose that the problem of ecology is a critical issue for the 21st century, suggesting that our well-documented ecological crisis is indicative of a more general crisis of human subjectivity. It then records an investigation into particular strategies for artistic praxis which might instigate an active engagement with this problem of ecology. The study employed a methodology based in action research to focus upon the development and analysis of three new artistic works, '#14', 'Public Relations' and 'transit_lounge'. These were used to explore diverse theories of ecology and to hone a series of pointers towards Ecosophical arts/new media praxis. This journey constitutes an emergent theory for new media space design. The thesis concludes with a toolkit of tactics and approaches that other arts/new media practitioners might employ to begin working on the problem of ecology.

Resumen
This book analyzes the filmmaking careers of Lana and Lilly Wachowski as the world’s most influential transgender media producers. Situated at the intersection of trans* studies and black feminist film studies, it argues that the Wachowskis’ cinema has been co-constitutive with the historical appearance of transgender, tracing how their work invents a trans* aesthetics of sensation that has disrupted conventional schemas of race, gender, space, and time. Offering new readings of the Wachowskis’ films and television, it illustrates the previously unsensed presence of transgender in the subtext of queer cinema, in the design of digital video, and in the emergence of a twenty-first-century global cinematic imaginary. It is in the Wachowskis’ art, the author argues, that transgender cultural production most centrally confronts cinema’s construction of reality, and in which white, Western transgender subjectivity most directly impacts global visual culture. Thus, the Wachowskis’ cinema is an inescapable archive for sensing the politics of race and gender in the present moment.

Resumen
This article appears in theOxford Handbook of New Audiovisual Aestheticsedited by John Richardson, Claudia Gorbman, and Carol Vernallis. Film in the digital era is increasingly developing as a sensory experience. Sounds and images together yield sensations that can approximate senses other than sight and hearing. Cinema can thusrender(as distinct fromreproduce) the coolness of the wet spray experienced by a fountain, for example, or speed, force, materiality, hollowness, heaviness, and so forth. At the same time, the nature of recording and filming takes sounds and images out of their real multisensory context and creates sensory isolates. Those who study film, games, and other audiovisual media should not to ignore their trans-sensory aspects.

Resumen
The Handbook of Japanese Media and Popular Culture in Transition brings together new research and perspectives on popular media phenomena, as well as shining a spotlight on texts that are less well known or studied. Organized into five thematic sections, the chapters span a diverse range of cultural genres, including contemporary film and television, postwar cinema, advertising, popular fiction, men’s magazines, manga and anime, karaoke and digital media. They address issues critical to contemporary Japanese society: the politicization of history, authenticity and representation, constructions of identity, trauma and social disaffection, intersectionality and trans/nationalism. Drawing on methods and approaches from a range of disciplines, the chapters make explicit the interconnections between these areas of research and map out possible trajectories for future inquiry. As such, the handbook will be of value to both novice scholars and seasoned researchers, working within and/or beyond the Japanese media studies remit.

Resumen
The first inclusive collection to examine post-2008 developments in Balkan cinema, this book brings together a number of international scholars working within and beyond the region to explore its industrial contexts and textual dimensions. Exploring both mainstream and arthouse cinemas, the authors identify patterns, trends and common characteristics in the subject matter and aesthetics of films produced and distributed since the global economic crisis. With a focus on transnational links, global networks and cross-cultural exchanges, the book addresses the role of national and supranational institutions as well as film festival networks in supporting film production, distribution and reception. Through critical and comprehensive profiles of the cinematic output in each Balkan country, and with an equal focus on smaller and underrepresented cinemas from Montenegro, Kosovo, North Macedonia and Albania, the collection argues for the continuing relevance of the concept of ‘Balkan cinema’. This study conceptualizes Contemporary Balkan Cinema as a hybrid, trans-national encounter that offers multifarious responses to political and social challenges in the region: gravitation and/or disillusionment toward the European Union; migration; political and social instability; and economic recession.

Resumen
There have been several studies of colonial Lahore in recent years. These have explored such themes as the city’s modernity, its cosmopolitanism and the rise of communalism which culminated in the blood- letting of 1947. This work moves away from the prism of the Great Divide of 1947 to examine the cultural and social connections which linked colonial Lahore with North India and beyond. Imperial globalisation globalization intensified long established exchanges of goods, people and ideas, despite portrayals of Lahore as inward looking and a world unto itself. The current volume is thus reflective of the concerns arising from the global history of Empire and the new urban history of South Asia. These are addressed in a series of thematic chapters, rather than in a narrative account of the city’s development during colonial rule. A number of previously neglected areas of Lahore’s history emerge in this volume that are suggestive of new avenues for research. These include the links between Lahore’s and Bombay’s early film industries; the growth of western tourism; the trans-regional opportunities for poets, musicians and sportsmen; the new patterns of religious pilgrimage; the consumption of foreign goods and finally, the growth of Lahore’s trans-regional revolutionary networks.

The chapter focuses on Lahore’s famous darvarzas (gateways) and mohallas (residential localities). It provides a fine grain analysis of the cultural and commercial life that took place in these surrounding areas. The inner city has been traditionally understood as a closed in area, but the chapter argues that this stereotype neglects the regional and trans-national linkages and circulation of goods and people. The three case studies of Bhati Gate, Shah Almi Gate and Mochi Gate illustrate the interconnectedness arising from commercial, cultural and political exchanges. The chapter concludes with a description both of the importance of the Mochi Gate area for training of classical musicians in Haveli Mian Khan and the musical soirees of Takia Mirasian and of Bhati Gate’s connections with the early film industry. All-India Radio Lahore which broadcast from December 1937 also provided a creative outlet for the musicians, writers and actors of Bhati and Mochi Gates and drew artists to the city.

Resumen
The Oxford Handbook of Feminist Approaches to the Hebrew Bible brings together thirty-seven essential essays written by leading international scholars, examining crucial points of analysis within the field of feminist Hebrew Bible studies. Organized into four major areas — globalization, neoliberalism, media, and intersectionality, the essays provide vibrant, relevant, and innovative contributions to the field. The topics of analysis focus heavily on gender and queer identity, with essays touching on African, Korean, and European feminist hermeneutics, womanist and interreligious readings, ecofeminist and animal biblical studies, migration biblical studies, the role of gender binary voices in evangelical-egalitarian approaches, oand the examination of scripture in light of trans women’s voices. The volume includes essays examining the Old Testament as recited in music, literature, film, and video games. In short, the book offers a vision for feminist biblical scholarship beyond the hegemonic status quo prevalent in the field of biblical studies, in many religious organizations and institutions that claim the Bible as a sacred text, and among the public that often mentions the Bible to establish religious, political, and socio-cultural restrictions for gendered practices. The exegetically and hermeneutically diverse essays demonstrate that feminist biblical scholarship forges ahead with the task of engaging the many issues and practices that keep the gender caste system in place even in the early part of the twenty-first century. The essays of this volume thus offer conceptual and exegetical ways forward at a historic moment of global transformation and emerging possibilities.

Resumen
Invasive species come in all sizes, from plant pathogens like the chestnut blight in eastern North America, to the red imported fire ant that has spread throughout the South, the predatory Indian mongoose now found in the Caribbean and Hawaii, and the huge Burmese python populating the Florida swamps. And while many invasive species are safe and even beneficial, the more harmful varieties cost the world economy billions of dollars annually, devastate agriculture, spread painful and even lethal diseases, and otherwise diminish our quality of life in myriad surprising ways. In Invasive Species: What Everyone Needs to Know, award-winning biologist Daniel Simberloff offers a wide-ranging and informative survey that sheds light on virtually every aspect of these biological invaders. Filled with case studies of an astonishing array of invasive species, the book covers such topics as how humans introduce these species-sometimes inadvertently, but often deliberately-the areas that have suffered the most biological invasions, the methods we use to keep our borders safe, the policies we currently have in place to manage these species, and future prospects for controlling their spread. An eminent ecologist, Simberloff analyzes the direct and indirect impacts of invasive species on various ecosystems, such as when non-native species out-compete native species for food or light, describes how invasive species (such as the Asian mosquito that is a vector for West Nile virus, itself an invasive species) transmit pathogens, and explains his acclaimed theory of "invasional meltdown" in which two or more introduced species combine to produce a far more devastating impact than any one of them would have caused alone. The book also discusses the more controversial issues surrounding invasive species and it concludes with suggested readings and a list of related web sites.

Resumen
“The three ages of silent film” charts the three commonly recognized periods of silent film: early, transitional, and classical. Changes in distribution after the early period shifted film’s role from a technological attraction presented as a transient fairground or vaudeville entertainment to a mode of storytelling presented in a fixed location in a nickelodeon or picture palace. This led to longer films with more complex composition and storytelling. The first film companies’ attempts to control the markets were circumvented by producers setting up West Coast studios. While European studios had a strong artistic influence that continued throughout the era, many struggled financially after the First World War.

Supply chain loss can occur during transit and storage, leading to unnecessary inefficiencies. The literature details much of the traditional losses, albeit descriptively and for developed economies. Through several case studies conducted on the Indian manufacturers and retailers, this case study discusses the losses specific to supply chains operating in developing economies that are difficult to control and prevent even with contemporary enabling technologies such as RFID. This chapter also suggests some possible measures to counter such losses, so as to increase the efficiency and enhance the resilience of the supply chain. An understanding of these losses and their possible mitigation through improved flows, reduced inventory, and reduced manpower, can equip firms for better supply chain risk and productivity management.

Resumen
The growth in size and duration of wildland fires in recent years and the increasingly demand for high-performance protective clothing, has led Thermal Protective Clothing (TPC) research and development to seek solutions to minimise firefighter thermal load and skin burns. In this context, the present work was developed under the framework of the DIF-Jacket project (https://difjacketproject.fe.up.pt), with the main goal being the development of a new multilayer system with phase change materials (PCMs) to be used in a jacket of wildland firefighters and the subsequent development of an experimental procedure to evaluate its transient behaviour. For that purpose, a small-scale multilayer system was developed. It consisted of three layers: an outer textile layer, a pouch with PCMs (intermediate layer) and an inner textile layer. The pouch with PCMs was incorporated into the multilayer system to absorb the incoming heat from the environment, to increase the time that a firefighter can be exposed to it. Subsequently, an experimental set-up was then developed to evaluate the transient behaviour of the solution with PCMs, simulating the different phases to which a firefighter is exposed to (i.e., direct exposure to a radiative heat flux followed by a post-fire period). Therefore, the effect of some pouch-related parameters on the multilayer system thermal behaviour was studied, namely different geometries of the pouches (square and rectangular) and two types of PCMs. As main conclusions, similar tendencies were obtained with the square and rectangular pouches. The best temperature homogeneity of the PCM pouches was obtained with the macroencapsulated PCM. The incorporation of PCMs in the multilayer system significantly delays its heating. Further research must be conducted to delay even more the increase of temperature during exposure time. Nevertheless, the described set-up can be used to analyse several opposing requirements of a multilayer system with PCM pouches integrated, allowing the correlation of geometrical features, and properties of the system components (either textiles or PCM pouches) with the system transient temperature behaviour.

Resumen
This chapter assessesfive contemporary films from three different nations that respond to the Europeanization of economies and identity formulations with a particular eye on how the passages through diverse landscapes are filmed: Le Grand Voyage, Rendez-vous à Kiruna (Anna Novion, 2012, France), St. Jacques… la Mecque (Colline Serreau, 2005, France), Torpedo (Matthieu Donck, 2012, Belgium/France) and La Vraie vie est ailleurs (Frédéric Choffat, 2006, Switzerland). The case studies are used to examine the primary motivations for being on the road in French-language Europe (and Europe in general) and the ways in which the various modes of transit involved are represented and how the techniques and practicalities affect the issue of representation. Each film under consideration seeks to outline the new ‘soft borders’ of Europe by crossing a variety of national, regional and social boundaries.

Resumen
In this chapter, the temperature-time history of a hot pot of soup which is immersed in still-air environment will be analyzed as shown in Figure 7-1. The still-air environment’s temperature is controlled and it varies linearly with time. The hot soup in the thin-walled aluminum pot will have negligible internal conduction heat transfer resistance as compared to the external free convection heat transfer resistance to the still-air environment, namely the body of the hot soup will almost have a constant temperature during the cooling process. Free convection heat transfer coefficient between the still-air environment is assumed to be a constant during the whole cooling process and all air properties are calculated at film temperature.

Resumen
Exceptionally stressful life events can cause severe psychological symptoms, including anxiety, feelings of derealization and depersonalization, and hyperarousal. In one of the first studies to comprehensively document acute reactions to extreme stress, Lindemann observed that the symptoms reported by survivors of the Coconut Grove Fire included avoidance, re-experiencing scenes from the fire, reports of derealization, and the experience of anxiety when exposed to reminders of the event. Similarly, acute responses reported by soldiers who fought in the First and Second World Wars included re-experiencing symptoms and dissociative responses such as numbing, amnesia, and depersonalization. The International Classification of Diseases has recognized acute stress reactions since 1948 (ICD-6). In the most recent edition (ICD-10), early reactions to exceptionally stressful life events are diagnosed as acute stress reaction, one of the diagnoses in the section headed ‘reactions to severe stress, and adjustment disorders’. The diagnoses of acute stress reactions in ICD-10 and of acute stress disorder in DSM-IV have similarities in that they are caused by extreme stress and have some overlap in symptom patterns. They can be considered as two separate points on a continuum from transient to more enduring symptoms. However, there are also differences in the underlying concepts, as we will discuss in this chapter.

Resumen
Advergames can be defined as online games that incorporate marketing content. Initially, many companies have placed their brands or logos in the virtual environment of computer games launched by specialised gaming firms. However, this form of advergaming is rather static and ineffective, since the player is concentrated on the task required by the game and might not acknowledge the brand image displayed in the background. This limitation has encouraged the firms to create their own advergames, which are developed around a theme or a character directly related with their products and/or brands. In order to ensure a large diffusion of these games, they were made freely available on the Internet. The facilities offered by the Internet platform have increased the interactiveness of the game, and have added a viral marketing dimension. Viral marketing describes any strategy that encourages individuals to pass on a marketing message to others, creating the potential for exponential growth in the message’s exposure and influence. The use of advergames corresponds well to a strategy of viral marketing, which incorporates the following principles: 1. Give away products or services 2. Provide for effortless transfer to others of these products/services 3. Scale easily from a small to a very large audience 4. Exploit common customer motivations and behaviours 5. Utilise existing communication networks to transfer the products/services, or messages about them 6. Take advantage of others’ resources (existing users/customers) The interest in advergames has substantially increased in the last 5 years because of its perceived advantages (FreshGames, 2002; WebResource, 2004): • Low-cost marketing in comparison with the traditional advertising channels, such as TV and radio • A captured audience that can transmit valuable personal information about its demographic profile, behaviour, needs, attitudes, and preferences • Customer retention: the average time spent in an advergame is 7 to 30 minutes, which cannot be reached in the case of a classical TV advertisement • Viral marketing: 81% of the players will e-mail their friends to try a good game All these data demonstrate the huge potential of advergames (Rodgers, 2004). However, despite the hype created by this new advertising method, most of the information describing or debating advergames is professionally-oriented, often written in an advertising style (DeCollibus, 2002; Hartsock, 00 ; Intrapromote, 2004). Very few academic studies have been initiated to investigate the characteristics of advergames, and their influence on consumers’ perceptions and behaviour (Hernandez, Chapa, Minor, Maldonaldo, & Barranzuela, 2004; Nelson, 2002). This article attempts to identify, based on the existent professional literature, the specific characteristics of an efficient advergame, and to verify the existence of these characteristics in 70 advergames that are active online.

Resumen
Abstract Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is used in this study to evaluate evacuation and possible egress routes during a fire emergency in the proposed San Bruno station of the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) system. Three modes of ventilation, namely natural (no fans), push-pull (fans operating in supply-exhaust mode), and exhaust-exhaust (fans operating in exhaust-exhaust mode) are investigated. The methodology adopted for fire and smoke modeling is explained. The modeled geometry of the station includes its various geometrical features such as mezzanine floor, staircases, and exits. Steady-state simulation results for temperature distribution and velocity field for the three ventilation modes are presented and discussed for various sections of the station.

Resumen
Gas turbine heat transfer studies commenced at Oxford University in 1969 when transient techniques previously used for measurements in hypersonic flows were applied to the gas turbine environment. Shock tubes were employed and subsequently a new form of transient tunnel, the Isentropic Light Piston Tunnel, was developed specifically for turbine heat transfer testing. During the following years further short duration facilities were developed to study blade and vane external aerodynamics and also the heat transfer in cooling passages was examined using liquid crystal techniques. All these transient facilities are described and the development of the instrumentation peculiar to these is explained. The results of the work on external and internal heat transfer are summarised. In particular, the film cooling studies, the blade and vane external heat transfer work and the wake simulation experiments are outlined. This paper is dedicated to the late Don Schultz.

Resumen
The evolution of a spark kernel ejected by a sunken fire igniter into a turbulent, fuel-air stratified cross-flow was studied both experimentally and using a model in a configuration that is similar to the conditions found in turbine engine combustors. This study allows for variations in the transit time of the kernel across a uniform non-flammable region, before entering a second stream containing a flammable fuel-air mixture. High speed schlieren and emission imaging systems are used to visualize the evolution of the kernel and determine the probability of ignition based on measurements over many spark events. Experiments are performed for a range of mean velocities, transit times, inlet (preheat) temperatures, flammable zone equivalence ratios, and non-flammable zone equivalence ratios. In addition to the typical dependence of ignition on the equivalence ratio of the flammable mixture, the results indicate the strong influence of the kernel transit time and the inlet flow temperature on the probability of ignition. The entrainment between the kernel and the surrounding flow appears to be primarily controlled by the kernel ejection-induced flowfield. Reduced-order modeling suggests that the lowering of the kernel temperature associated with entrainment of the non-flammable mixture significantly reduces the ignition probability, and leads to the conclusion that the presence of fuel close to the igniter is necessary to ensure reliable ignition under adverse conditions.

Resumen
Bangladesh, once considered the Least Developed Country (LDC), became elevated to lower-middle income status in 2015. Dhaka is the capital of the country and central economic hub, ranked the sixth most populous city in the World, with a density of 23,234 people per square kilometer (Dhaka, Tribune, 2022). An influx of migrant people from different districts makes Dhaka a sprawling urban junction. Traffic congestion, air pollution, fire incidents, and other urban chaos are unbearable daily facts. Studies by Dhaka Urban Transport Project (DUTP) identified that adaptation of Transport Oriented Develop is essential to increase accessibility and to offer redevelopment opportunities around the station node. Mass Rapid Transit, one of the choices of TOD, was first conceived in 2005 in the Strategic Transport Plan for Dhaka, and the construction started in 2012. The initial route, MRT-6, will connect several residential and Central Business Districts areas like Motizeel. However, due to unmanaged traffic and unplanned mixed-used development, once vibrant CBD has lost its potential for commercial activities. This research will investigate the choice of Rail-based MRT for Dhaka and the additional improvement of spatial attributes (density, land use diversity, and pedestrian-friendly design) that will contribute to reviving the study station at Motizeel. Keywords: TOD, Urban form, Mass Rapid Transport (MRT), Pedestrian

Resumen
This paper presents dynamic behaviors of a flexible rotor supported on nonlinear bearings and nonlinear squeeze film dampers. The nonlinear bearing and damper forces, which depend on instantaneous nodal displacements and velocities, are calculated at each time step through closed form solutions of Reynolds equation. Such combinations of fluid film bearings and squeeze film dampers are often used in industrial machines such as compressors and steam turbines to increase system damping. No previous works have studied the nonlinear time transient analysis of a fluid film bearing and damper combination. To describe the coupled motion of shaft, bearing and squeeze film damper, a method of assembling both the linear rotor and the nonlinear components is developed. The numerical transient analyses are applied to a 3-disk rotor supported with nonlinear short plain journal bearings and nonlinear short squeeze film dampers. Squeeze film dampers, introduced to the system, increase dynamic stability of the system under a wide range of system rotational speeds, and decrease the bearing forces under severe unbalance forces. Different nonlinear rotor dynamic behavior, such as sub-harmonic, super-harmonic and torus orbits are shown in transient analyses. This type of analysis can be employed to study whether a centering spring is required in the damper or not.

Resumen
The present study is a continuation of an experimental investigation of film cooling from cylindrical holes embedded in transverse trenches. In this study, focus is on varying the downstream edge of the trench by angling it along the flow. Different edge angles are studied for the same trench depth. Also, the effect of hole spacing is considered for one of the standard trenches from previous studies to understand the effect of trenching on overall coolant usage. Detailed heat transfer coefficient and film effectiveness measurements are obtained simultaneously using a single test transient IR thermography technique. The study is performed at a single mainstream Reynolds number based on free-stream velocity and film hole diameter of 11000 at four different coolant-to-mainstream blowing ratios of 0.5, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0. The results show that film effectiveness is greatly enhanced by the trenching due to improved two dimensional nature of the film and lateral spreading. The detailed heat transfer coefficient and film effectiveness contours provide a clear understanding of the jet-mainstream interactions for different hole orientations. The effect of edge angling is minimal on the overall cooling effectiveness but may have an impact on jet-mainstream interaction aerodynamic losses.

Resumen
The thermal transport properties of compositionally modulated materials are currently of interest. These materials are deposited as thin films onto substrates, thereby complicating conventional thermal transport measurements. For thin metallic films, transient thermoreflectance (TTR) is a technique which permits transport measurements perpendicular to the film plane and independent of the substrate.1’2 A transient thermoreflectance measurement is initiated with the absorption of a short optical heating pulse by the metal electrons. The electrons rapidly thermalize with the metal lattice and diffuse distances on the order of ℓ≈kt where k is the thermal diffusivity and t is the time after the arrival of the heating pulse. This ultra-fast heating and diffusion produces a change in reflectivity which is linearly proportional to the temperature for small deviations (~ 10 K). This change in reflectivity is measured with a weaker laser pulse which is delayed with respect to the heating pulse. For a typical metal, k ≈ 1.5 × 10−5 m2/sec, and after 200 psec the surface heat has diffused a distance of only ℓ ≈ 55 nm. The penetration depth of visible light in a metal is approximately 20 nm, and for film thicknesses of approximately 100 nm or greater, the TTR measurement can be completed before substrate effects become important. Since the optical heating pulse is focussed to a diameter of ~ 20 μm, on the surface and only heats to a depth of ~ 20 nm, the rather large aspect ratio of the heated volume permits a one dimensional treatment of the heat flow for times corresponding to diffusion out of the optical skin depth.

Resumen
This study deals with the experimental and numerical studies of the effect of hole exit shape and free-stream turbulence on turbine blade leading edge film cooling. The study examines several test cases with two blowing ratios (BR = 1.0 and 2.0) and three mainstream turbulence intensities (1.0, 3.3 and 12.0%) using two types of leading edge models with cylindrical holes and diffuser holes [1]. The leading edge model consists of a semi-circular part of 80mm diameter and a flat after-body. In this study total pressure loss coefficient is measured by total pressure probe. Film effectiveness and heat transfer coefficient on the model surface are measured by the transient method using thermochromatic liquid crystal with video camera. In addition, detailed investigation of the film cooling is carried out using CFD simulations. RANS approach using Shear Stress Transport turbulence model and Detached Eddy Simulation (DES) approach are employed to solve the flow field. In the case of diffuser hole, the effect of mainstream turbulence intensity appears significant, and its spanwise averaged film effectiveness is decreased.

Resumen
This study is the analytical investigation of transient flow characteristics in a ventilated compartment fire. This study aims at enhancing the understanding of fire propagation in the compartment and its influence on the air flow characteristics. The present paper discusses the results of different ventilation scenarios for a single fire scenario. It is recommended to use the smoke extract fans in designated locations in the spaces that could be exposed to the fire hazards. Corridor smoke extract fan provides the safe escape for the occupancy. Quantitative parametric studies are carried out for various situations, to enhance our knowledge about the fire behavior. The critical time for the safe escaping of occupancy from the fire starting is discussed in the present work. Also, it is found that, the fire field models based on CFD are useful tools that can greatly support this target.

Resumen
Thin film temperature sensors integrated onto mechanical component surface are promising for real-time machine condition monitoring. In this paper one-dimensional heat conduction model has been developed to study the response time of the thin film sensors designed for monitoring of temperature distribution in elastohydrodynamic lubrication contact. A control volume approach was used to numerically analyze the effects of film thickness (from 0.1 μm to 100 μm), sensing materials, and substrate materials on the transient time response of the thin film sensor. Validation of the numerical model was compared to an analytical solution in a semi infinite domain. The time constants are obtained based on a constant heat load and sensor sensibility is studied when a typical dynamic pressure in lubricated contact is applied. The faster response time and the short time delay for a thin film sensor are expected in lower conductivity of substrate. It is also clear that the response time decreases with increasing film thickness and the conductivity of the substrate. Results show that when thickness of the sensor is less than 1 μm, the sensor is feasible to capture the transient temperature profile in real-time for machine health monitoring under various operating condition.

Oxygen uptake, CO2 production and respiratory quotient (RQ) of strawberry, raspberry and cherry were measured as functions of temperature and oxygen level. The effect of cultivar was studied in strawberry ('Honey' and 'Allstar'). The effect of harvest date was studied for raspberry. The lower O2 limit increased markedly with incraqsing temperature for all fruits studied. Red bell pepper O2 uptake was measured as a function of O2 at 20o C. Lowering the inpackage humidity using NaCl reduced decay of bell pepper sealed in low-density polyethylene packages when stored at 8o C. Analyses of a model developed for MA-packaged red bell pepper fruit demonstrated that when RQ was near one and when CO2 exceeded O2 permeability, transient CO2 levels increased to a maximum before dropping to steady-state levels. An isothermal model of O2, CO2 and water vapor exchange in MA packages was developed for red bell pepper and tested empirically. A comprehensive model was developed for small fruits that also incorporated water vapor and the effects of changing temperature. Variation in package O2 levels was measured and modeled as a function of variation in respiration and film permeability.

Resumen
The tomato, a profitable vegetable crop in both the USA and Israel, has benefited significantly from intensive breeding efforts in both countries, and elsewhere (esp. Holland). : Modem hybrids are highly prolific and resistant to a variety of major pests. They produce attractive, firm fruit for both processing and fresh-marketing. In all cases, however, reduction in flavor and aroma have occurred concomitantly with the increase in yield. Sugars-acids ratio dominate fruit taste, whereas aroma volatiles (potent at minute ppb and ppt levels) contribute to the total characteristic tomato flavor. An increase in sugars (1-2%) contributes significantly to tomato fruit taste. However, because of energy reasons, an increase in fruit sugars is immediately compensated for by a decrease in yield. Our main objectives were to: (a) pinpoint and identify the major impact aroma components of fresh tomato; (b) study the genetic and environmental effects on fruit aroma; (c) determine precursors of appealing (flavors) and repelling (off-flavors) aroma compounds in tomato. Addition of saturated salts blocked all enzymatic activities prior to isolation of volatiles by dynamic and static headspace, using solvent assisted flavor evaporation (SAFE) and solid phase micro-extraction (SPME) from highly favored (FA-612 and FA-624) and less preferred (R 144 and R 175) tomato genotypes. Impact aroma components were determined by gas chromatography-olfactometry (GC-O), gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC- MS) and aroma extract dilution analysis (AEDA). The potent odorant (Z)-1,5-octadien-3-one, was identified for the first time in fresh tomato. From the ca. 400 volatile compounds in the headspace of fresh tomato, the following compounds are proposed to be impact aroma compounds: (Z)-3-hexenal, hexanal, 1-penten-3-one, 2-phenylethanol, (E)-2-hexenal, phenyl acetaldehyde, b-ionone, b-damascenone, 4-hydroxy-2,5-dimethyl-3-(2H)-furanone (FuraneolR), (Z)-l,5-octadien-3-one, methional, 1-octen-3-one, guaiacol, (E,E)- and (E,Z)- 2,4-decadienal and trans- and cis-4,5-EPOXY -(E)-2-decenal. This confirms the initial hypothesis that only a small number of volatiles actually contribute to the sensation of fruit aroma. Tomato matrix significantly affected the volatility of certain impact aroma components and thus led to the conclusion that direct analysis of molecules in the headspace . may best represent access of tomato volatiles to the olfactory receptors. Significant differences in certain odorants were found between preferred and less-preferred cultivars. Higher consumer preference was correlated with higher concentrations of the following odorants: l-penten-3-one, (Z)-3-hexenal, (E,E)- and (E,Z)-2,4-decadienal and especially Furaneol, whereas lower consumer preference was associated with higher concentrations of methional, 3-methylbutyric acid, phenylacetaldehyde, 2-phenylethanol, and 2-isobutylthiazole. Among environmental factors (salinity, N source, growth temperature), temperature had significant effects on the content of selected aroma compounds (e.g., 3-methylbutanal, 1- penten-3-one, hexanal, (Z)-3-hexenal, (E)-2-hexenal, 2-isobutylthiazole, 6-methyl-5-hepten- 2-one, 1-octen-3-one, methional, 2-phenylethanal, phenyl acetaldehyde, and eugenol) in fresh tomatoes. Salt stress (20 mM NaCl) increased the content of odorants such as (Z)-3-hexenal, 2-phenylethanol and 3-methylbutanal in the R-144 cultivar whereas salinity had minor effects on 1-pentene-3-one, 2-isobutylthiazole and b-ionone. This fundamental knowledge obtained by comprehensive investigation, using modem chemical, sensory and agrotechnical methodology will assist future attempts to genetically modify the concentrations of key odorants in fresh tomatoes, and thus keep the tomato production of Israel and the USA competitive on the world market.
