MARINELLI, SIMONA. "Strategie innovative per la sostenibilità del settore industriale". Doctoral thesis, Università degli studi di Modena e Reggio Emilia, 2022. http://hdl.handle.net/11380/1277915.
Texto completoIndustry has a central role to play in the social, economic, and environmental sustainability transition driven by the European Commission and by the United Nations Development Programme. Despite a growing interest in moving towards a quality, reliable, sustainable, and resilient industrial sector, individual firms still encounter several barriers that hamper a transition compliant with the three pillars of sustainability. Common strategies are usually adopted but reaching the ambitious sustainability target levels still remains a challenge. Starting from an overview of the scientific literature and of European and International policies, the present works highlights alternative and innovative strategies for promoting a sustainable industry. Through the analysis of case studies environmental benefits and human well-being improvements are demonstrated, with a focus on small and medium-sized enterprises often overlooked compared to energy-intensive and large companies. The objective is the identification of viable and effective solutions for industries following a multi-approach strategy at several levels, showing that acting on the overall industrial sector can significantly contribute on achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. The obtained results can help practitioners and stakeholders to integrate sustainable practices into their management model.

Texto completoThis study wants to investigate the process of diffusion of Inclusive Businesses according to the principles of the Bottom of the Pyramid (BOP) theory. The rationale is to investigate whether the Inclusive Business approach may lead to a new policy framework addressing Sustainability needs and Human Development, at a global level. Two diffusion-related variables were tested: the geographical replication of Inclusive Business models and the presence of a supporting institutional landscape. The study verified the hypothesis through a qualitative analysis of two firms (geographical replication variable), sixteen labs from the BOP Learning Lab Network (supporting institutional landscape variable) and ninety-six case-studies of the UNDP Growing Inclusive Markets database (both variables). Results showed cultural, policy, regulatory and economic barriers hampering the geographical replication of BOP ventures. From the institutional point of view, results showed a poor integration of actors from the BOP within the supporting institutions. Yet, two drivers to diffuse the Inclusive Businesses emerged: migrant networks and sector-level organizations. Both were investigated highlighting their potentialities in relation to the research question. Finally, open issues on the diffusion of Inclusive Business models were presented, explaining their contribution in advancing the state of the art of the BOP theory.

Texto completoThis research work sets objectives that combine the principles of circular economy, bioeconomy and sustainability in the agrifood field, to identify strategies for the enhancement of agro-industrial waste through a typical approach of biorefinery applications The main focus is dedicated to the large productions of Cucurbitaceae, with particular reference to the cultivars of Citrullus Lanatus (watermelon) and Cucumis Melo (melon), since the agri-food sector represented by these primary crops generates huge quantities of waste materials along the entire supply chain “from farm to fork”. The key idea of the PhD project consists in the possibility of extending the value chain, which currently seems to be interrupted with the abandonment of waste products in the open field, or those generically devalued due to morphological non-compliance, for over-production or over-ripening, restoring its continuity through the transformation of recovered material. The challenges of product and process technological innovation for the agrifood sector, would allow the use of these materials for transformations in any direction, anyhow all oriented according to the program targets of the 2030 Agenda. While recognizing the strategic value of the whole context of change identified by the ONU program, we have chosen to seize some of the major challenges to turn them into great opportunities, always operating along the guidelines of the food&feed context, neglecting the aspects directly related to energy recovery from residual biomass and the enhancement through composting processes. Therefore, through effective fractionation steps starting from the selected matrices, it was possible to obtain: ● dietary fibers of cellulosic origin, either natural “as it is”, or bleached through treatments with H2O2, red fibers with a high lycopene content; ● lycopene from red fibers, and other natural pigments-dyes from other fractions and by-products from the exocarp; ● germplasm oil from Citrullus seeds, and ● proteic-starchy flour (residue of the oil extraction) from the kernel of the same seeds; ● acetification products of the sugary juice extracted from the endocarp of the watermelon; ● candying products starting from the watermelon mesocarp (albedo). For the extended characterization of the different fractions, we have applied several instrumental techniques, analytical and chemical-physical methodologies, including the proper preparation of the samples, which can be summarized as follows: UV-Vis spectroscopy both on samples in solid state and in solution, also for the evaluation of the color point with the CIELab method; chromatographic techniques GC-MS, SPME-GC-MS, HPLC-DAD, HPLC-MS; elemental analysis (CHNS); thermal analysis (TG/DTG/DTA/DSC); Water Holding Capacity (WHC); ICP-OES analysis for the evaluation of the metal content; morphological analysis using surface techniques (SEM). At the end of the PhD activities, we can take a critical look at the targets achieved. Extending the value chain to waste materials can make it possible to acquire competitiveness for the agrifood system, but only if adequate efforts are made for investments in research and innovation. The reported analysis describes some structural features of a production sector that, at a regional and national level, is related to the performance of an oversized agrifood system, since it tends to reject pre-waste resources that are still easily recoverable. Projecting these results, which express competitive potential, in a gritty productive horizon and of reasoned consumption, can guarantee even only a small effective contribution to global food sustainability.

Doctoral thesis, Università Ca' Foscari Venezia, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10579/1006.
Texto completoThe innovation of the Tourist System through the integration with the agricultural sector, thanks to the valorisation and fruition of the agro-eco-landscapes (a new typology of landscape the result of the mix of natural and anthropogenic resources of that specific territory) is the focus of the research. The discovery of the paradigms that have originated many actual models of touristic – seaside in particular - and agricultural developments has allowed the research to deconstruct them, in order to propose a “new integrated coast-hinterland tourist system” based on policies, structures and tools aimed at an integrated sustainability. The creation of an integrated system and, therefore, the increase of the resources and of those subjects involved in the touristic sector, inevitably leads to socio-environmental conflicts that must be managed through participatory and inclusive decision-making processes. The choice of case studies (Province of Venice and Camargue) meets the need, on the one hand, to anchor the landscape neologism to an application case and, on the other, to suggest a concrete example of an integrated and partecipatory territorial management.

Texto completoThis study aims to explore existing paradoxes in the offer of food sustainable products and consequently consumers’ behaviours (coping strategies) (Lazarus and Folkman, 1984) at the time of this perception. For this purpose, the theoretical model of Mick and Fournier (1998), built initially for studying the paradoxes of modern technologies, were adapted to sustainable food consumption. At methodological level, a qualitative survey was conducted among 84 “ordinary” consumers in France and Italy. Later other 18 subjects, usually involved into sustainable purchases (participants of AMAP, GAS), were interviewed. The semi-structured interviews shed light on some differences between “ordinary” consumers of the two countries when they adopted coping strategies to go beyond perceived paradoxes. Thus we proposed three ordinary consumers’ profiles. On the contrary engaged individuals are like a more homogeny group going over national boundaries. They agree with paradoxes and sustainable practices. In addition, the research pointed out some divergent aspects connected with specific context, for instance market of sustainable food products, communication over this offer and social cultural characteristics. Finally, this work had three objectives: theoretical to verify the paradoxes listed and evocated consumers’ strategies by French and Italian consumers; methodological regarding the adaptation of the conceptual model “gears” of Mick et Fournier (1998) to the context of sustainable consumption; and then practical ones such as identification of barriers for developing sustainable consumption and specific possible ways of growth: more attention to environmental aspects in France (“filière nord/nord” of organic, fairly, local French peasants) and ethics products in Italy (products issued from social economies).

PENNETTA, DANIELA. "Il rapporto banca-FinTech: Open Banking, performance e profili di sostenibilità per PMI e individui". Doctoral thesis, Università degli studi di Modena e Reggio Emilia, 2022. http://hdl.handle.net/11380/1261320.
Texto completoThe following thesis originates from the increasing competition and dynamism that traditional financial institutions are facing following the entry of new players within the financial industry, i.e. FinTech firms, and which call for revisions to traditional banking. New innovation and growth strategies of banks may also contemplate the participation to Open Banking ecosystems and cooperation with FinTech firms. Both themes are little explored in the extant literature, especially from an empirical point of view, and are the focus of this dissertation. According to PSD2, banks are required to open up access to customers’ account data to authorized Third Party Providers (TPPs), fostering Open Banking, a collaborative model in which data, services and applications are shared through APIs with TPPs, including FinTechs, with the aim to develop customer-oriented financial products and services. Nevertheless, banks may decide to comply only to minimum requirements or to adopt an active approach, moving from forced to voluntary collaboration models. The thesis examines the current attitude to partnership as an antecedent of Open Banking, exploring its structural and economic determinants and its effects on banks’ performance in the Italian context. Results reveal a low attitude to partnership, which may hinder the formation of Open Banking platforms. The attitude to partnership tends to be higher for small and less capitalized banks, which can participate to Open Banking platforms in order to overcome size and resources constraints. Overall, the positive effect of attitude to partnership on banks’ performance may justify the participation to Open Banking platforms. The second part of the thesis focuses on bank-FinTech relationship, through which incumbents’ can access to advanced technologies useful to improve their digital services and FinTechs can ensure a faster and less risky development path, by accessing to new financial resources and to banks’ wider customer base and distribution channels. Here, the purpose is to find empirical evidence of the theorized benefits of bank-FinTech relationships by assuming FinTech firms’ perspective, thus investigating if the presence and diffusion of strategic alliances with banks affect the performance, growth and visibility of FinTech firms. Our results show that bank-FinTech relationships do not generate any positive performance; on the contrary, there is a positive effect on revenue growth and visibility, potentially allowing FinTechs to quickly reach a break-even point after the first phase of their life cycle. The last part of the thesis focuses on the role of the financial system, and in particular of FinTech firms, in the pursuit of the Agenda 2030, a plan of action for people, planet and prosperity that integrates economic, environmental and social issues. Leveraging on new technologies, FinTech firms may contribute to SDGs thanks to their ability to redirect financial resources towards sustainable uses and to mitigate financial exclusion. However, this contribution may be hampered by their typical start-up phase, in which failure often occur. For this reason, cooperation with banks can help newcomers in their growth path, thus strengthening their potential contribution to the Agenda 2030. The last part of the thesis explores if SDG-orientation of FinTech firms affect the likelihood to establish one or more bank-FinTech relationships and if this effect differs between different types of agreement. Results show a positive correlation between FinTech firms’ SDG-orientation and bank-FinTech relationship, concluding that the latter may be considered as an additional avenue in the pursuit of Agenda 2030, and, as such, should be contemplated by regulators in guidelines and regulatory requirements.

Texto completoThe sustainable management of common-pool resources will be among the main challenges that people will have to solve in the next years. In spite of all that, unsustainability of the current energy, water and waste production–consumption models are evident. In the last years socio-technical utility systems such as electricity, water and waste, have been subjected to many transformation in managerial (liberalization), organizational (multiutility model) and socio-cultural (new orientation for consumption) dimensions. Since the utility systems are closely intertwined with society and nature their transformation to play a leading role in the making of environmental sustainable future for society. In the first section this paper introduces an analysis of theoretic position on utility system’s transformation, and highlight weak point and perspective of this dynamic change’s riding. In the second section the paper proposes a sociological integrated framework for interpretation of the ecological transformation of the energy and water consumption and waste management. The sociological analysis shows that in socio-environmental field there are two sustainable paths (top down strategy versus bottom up way) but they seem weak and uncertain and don’t enough for building a sustainable future.

Texto completoStrategic frameworks like shared value or social impact creation have been posited as innovative organizational strategies capable of mending the gap between business and society through inclusive sustainability. If their claims are promising, they still face much criticism concerning their relevance and effectiveness. The dissertation investigates how organizations which have endorsed the idea of shared value creation are efficient, or not, at yielding benefits for themselves and their host communities. It uses the case study methodology to explore four SMEs and two multinational companies in Ghana. The research builds on a multidisciplinary approach to organizational behavior and strategy to dig to ground the pitfalls of strategic action in Ghana, an epitome of the recent Africa Rising narrative. It scrutinizes the way local socioeconomic mores affect strategic choices and organizational performance. The major contribution of the thesis is to introduce a revisited version of Crozier and Friedberg’s concrete system of action for efficiently embedded strategies of shared value and social impact creation. With this, the work reveals that local socioeconomic mores are dynamic resilience mechanisms of control, collusion, bargaining, and/or resistance, which strategists must take account of in designing sustainable strategies, especially in Sub-Saharan Africa.
