Texto completoThis thesis explores the processes by which discriminatory NIMBY sentiments are realized as legal development regulations in contemporary suburbs. The historic evolution of the suburbs and the psychological foundations behind their typical characteristics are presented as the sources of a suburban value structure which esteems NIMBY. Suburban governments are mandated to represent their constituents' values, but exclusionary development controls are a complex product of constituent demands, fiscal constraints, and constitutional limits.
This analysis reveals that legislative responsibility often bows to political weakness. NIMBY groups use political pressure to manipulate municipal governments into using their vast discretionary powers over development as a weapon for exclusion. In response to either political or fiscal motivations, legislators pressure planners to validate discriminatory legislative agendas with their plans, thus undermining their abilities to guide growth effectively. Although the process of development regulation is well-grounded in historic and legal precedents, when legislation is used for discriminatory ends, citizens' civil and property rights are jeopardized. This thesis explains how regulations such as zoning ordinances can be used for exclusion when municipal government disregards its mandate to be the guardian of the general welfare.
Increased awareness of both the motivations and the manifestations of the NIMBY phenomenon may enable individuals as well as lawmakers to create a more equitable suburbia.

Texto completoCertain aspects of Manfredo Tafuri's work have been recently reexamined by the academic community. However, the redraft of his ideas has likely generated both several misunderstandings and misconceptions. His theoretical approach is one of the main keys to interpret his work: the issue of any architectural process is the complexity of the process itself. The theoretical issues of an architectural project relates to Tafuri’s argument regarding the basic constraints that we could find in the philosophical debate about modernity, techniques, languages, freedom and the constraints on subjective action. Tafuri tracks an extraordinarily rich cartography of architecture and a cultural and political pathway that connects a wide critical thinking sphere of the Italian intelligentsia between the 1960s and 1980s

Texto completoThe opera "Samson et Dalila" by Camille Saint-Saëns produced on stage by Pier Luigi Pizzi at the opera "Bastille" in 1991 served as an example for pointing out the link which exists between art history and opera. Pizzi, who is both stage designer and producer, offers an excellent example for this kind of study: his stage representations mainly turn toward the fine arts and especially toward painting. The subject of his stage design is the topic of our research. We tried therefore to determine the cultural references (fine arts, music, literature, film, etc. ) Which have been our could have been used for the stage design. Our choices, often personal, still are open to the free imagination of the reader, which may be explained by the fact that the stage design by itself is supposed to stimulate an imaginative response in the spectator. The stage design presents a composition of opera as a whole and also its part in crossing over between romantic and contemporary esthetics. Especially the esthetics of singing was linked to the idea of the "soul" and the "mind" in the romantic period. Today the "body" itself represents the means of expression. How now to render "soul" and "body" according to stage design ? How to translate and to define them in the context of stage representation, as well as in other institutions of art ? These questions lead to an analysis of the identity of the parisian opera houses such as the "national opera of paris" (the stage setting of "Samson et Dalila" by Pizzi widely referred to them), their relationships among themselves, and their position among art institutions in general

Texto completoThe aim of this thesis is to observe the evolution of the specific knowledge and practices of the City of Paris’ technical services and this, through the example of an ambitious Parisian urban development project called “Réinventons nos places”. The study focuses on the professional activities performed in the development of three public squares (Place des Fêtes, Place de la Nation, and Place de la Bastille), with the purpose to see how the specialists adapted themselves to the various challenges offered by the City council (for instance, to take into account : the Gender in the development of a public space, digital objects, innovation in project management and in the way of managing space)... To examine this process “in a work situation” will lead us, for example, to describe the way these specialists will assimilate new knowledge and know-how in this particular context. Ultimately, the City Council, when progressively adapting the work and the work organization of the various actors, as well as the project goawls themselves, seems to be aiming at the creation of a “new model”, a new way of developing public spaces. We are going to examine the first step within this new way, in which engineers and architects have to reconsider their habits in order to meet new demands – they do this, notably, by making still unknown objects and by fitting them into both a specific area and a background they know well : Paris’ public spaces

The objective of this research is to develop a Web-based collaborative tool for learning creativity. This research describes a game-based system, Idea Storming Cube, in support of creative thinking. It aims to make people form a creative and Perspective-Modifying thinking habit. Based on theories of this kind support system and prior studies, we propose to integrate exciting game environment and intelligent support mechanism into the creativity thinking support system. The system acquires knowledge from domain expert, user inputs history, and individuals of a brainstorming group, and then provides user-, goal- and context-sensitive supports. Compared to classic tutoring systems, it focuses more on stimulating divergent thinking. The system can be utilized with two distinct support strategies, Basic Mode and Agent-Assist Mode, in order to support different learning objectives. One focus on knowledge learning, the other highlights the divergent thinking ability. The proposed Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) tool for collaborative idea generation has been implemented, and two experiments for preliminary evaluation of the system are also reported in this thesis. The major results of this study show that the game-based brainstorming system with appropriate intelligent support outperforms the other types of systems because the game competition environment can make them concentrate on the brainstorming tasks and let them think more from different view points for learning the knowledge with the support of the peer-like agent.

Clean Architecture has become a popular software architecture in recent years because of its independence from the framework, user interface, database and external programs, and its ease of testing. In Clean Architecture, the entities layer and the use case layer are the core of the whole architecture. However, in Clean Architecture, there is not much explanation on how to disassemble the problem domain into domain models and use cases. Based on Morris’s thesis, this thesis first discusses the problems encountered in the kanban system, ezKanban, which uses the object-oriented analysis and design method to implement Clean Architecture. The dependence of domain objects is too complicated, and how to maintain the invariants represented by domain objects, persistence interface grain size design of domain models, output interface and grain size design of use cases. We further propose to solve the above problems by using event storming, domain event pattern, aggregate pattern and repository pattern commonly used in the domain-driven design field. The research results show that the domain model established by object-oriented analysis and design, combined with the method proposed in this thesis, can simplify the implementation of Clean Architecture and avoid the problems that may be caused by the object-oriented analysis and design.

The Mixed Reality technology trend has undergone recently, the way human interacting with information is transferring 2D interface into 3D environment. Likewise, the method that the design team members generate the concept has to be changed as well. Because of the user input and other operation of Mixed Reality have a significant correlation with the physical environment, using current method like brainstorming, the design team may hardly envisage the multilevel interactive operation details in the physical environment. This study shows that both the embodied storming and Mixed Reality emphasize the interaction between the user and physical environment. Therefore, we proposed a core hypothesis that the embodied storming method can effects on team concept generation in the Mixed Reality design process. Our major research question is to find the differences in the design activity between embodied storming and brainstorming. The aim of our study is to discuss how the embodied storming method effects on team concept generation in the Mixed Reality design process. Through the setting of experimentation to show the correlations between the embodied storming method and the Mixed Reality concept design process, and focused on the analysis of what does this method impact on the scenario and the interaction details of concept. We conducted two design teams by the control experiment method, which develop the same design subject within the time and recorded the discussion in the process on video. The experiment is divided into two teams, which is named as team E and team B. As for the team E, conducting the embodied storming method with transparent sheet-prototyping. In team B, using the brainstorming as well as scenario design approach with sticky note. With protocol analysis, results showed first, the thinking logic of embodied storming is commenced from the layout of virtual information performed by body language, associated with interaction and operation, subsequently to develop the concept of scenario; second, we compare the descriptions of discussing with two teams, the quantity of narrative included physical and digital interactions indicated that team E is larger than team B; and third, according to the analysis and interview results, the embodied storming method can help communicate and understand the idea between each other. On the one hand, the experiment confirmed that the team B hardly envisage the multilevel interactive operation details. The concept generated from team B merely presented with the visual form, with rarely the narrative of physical and digital interactions. To conclude, the embodied storming showed that this method can have a great effect on Mixed Reality concept design process. Additionally, the design activity had obvious difference between team E and team B. Furthermore, we suggest that the design team can use embodied storming method and brainstorming method by turns to come up with more potential forms of interaction in detail. This effective method can make the design team more vivid in the Mixed Reality concept generation process.

The purpose of this study is to examine the impacts of “Award-giving” and “Brain-storming” teaching methods on math learning attitude, achievement, and problem-solving ability of first-grade junior high school students. The researcher adopted “Award-giving” and “Brain-storming” methods in teaching math which assists students learn from game-playing activities. The sample included two first-grade junior high school classes, one as experimental group, and the other as control group. There were 35 students in the experimental group which was given “Brain-storming” and “Award-giving” teaching methods. There were 35 students as well in the control group which was given traditional teaching method. The instruments developed and used in the study were (1) the Test of Learning Attitude in Math Learning that includes confidence, interest and belief sub-instruments, (2) the Tests of Math Learning Achievement [1] and [2] , (3) the Tests of Problem-Solving [1] and [2] that include realizing problem, defining problem, identifying factor, providing information and deciding strategy sub-instruments, (4) the Questionnaire of Problem-Solving Ability. Statistical methods were utilized to test their significance. There is no significant difference on achievement tests, belief of learning math, defining problem and deciding strategy. The results suggest that the experimental group has significant difference on total attitude, confidence, interest of learning and total problem-solving ability, realizing problem, identifying factors and providing information. It indicates that the style of “Brain-storming” and “Award-giving” teaching strategies can improve student’s problem-solving ability. In summary, the teaching style of “Brain-storming” and “Award-giving” is recommended to teach junior high school math. Suggestions for teaching and further study were made at the end of this thesis.
