Texto completoThe Spanish society, between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, felt a need for progress which leads to an important period of development in technical and scientific fields. The circulation of concepts and knowledges coming from foreign countries and the impressive progress of chemistry and mechanics influenced the most important manufactures, characterized by a traditional craftsmanship. This is the context of a slow but inexorable transition to the industrial production. The aim of the present work is to observe the lexical dynamics analysing a specific domain: the art of tanning leather. The research, by an interdisciplinary methodological approach, achieves three objectives: collecting and analysing the Spanish leather tanning lexicon in its crucial passage from local craft to industry, observing the lexicon self-adaptation capability to the new communicative needs by analysing the lexical creation mechanisms and verify the existence of a link between the evolution of a language and the dynamics that concern the socio-cultural context.

Texto completoAbstract This work intends to provide a critical reconstruction of historical development concerning the legal framework of civil pre-trial procedure in Italian and Spanish legal systems between the 19th and 20th century. In this perspective special attention is focused on respective models of ‘modern’ codification as well as on subsequent reforms until the enactment of current civil procedure codes. All with a view to highlighting relevant similarities between historical evolutions traditionally considered in their own right.

Texto completoBy adopting a long-term period chronological perspective, this research analyses the institutional frameworks’ development of Milanese literary academies between their appearance in the city area and the beginning of Austrian government’s jurisdiction after the Peace of Utrecht. Key objectives of the phenomenon’s historical reconstruction are: the identification of patrons who promoted the academies’ dissemination; the description of associational networks made up by different intellectual elite groups operating in Milan; the contextualization of cultural projects - and resulting under covered political tensions - that influenced the academical pattern’s expansion process; finally, the gradual constitution of a peculiar Ambrosian identity related with this associations’ typology. The exegesis of the “Badia della Val di Blenio” academy’s literary production, deduced by the historical examine of the “Facchino” Cosme de Aldana’s bio-bibliographical experience, introduces the enquiry on students’ academical foundations, which were the result of the cooperation between the archiepiscopal curia, religious orders involved in the educational programs and representative bodies of Milanese patricians. Archival discoveries on Inquieti’s meetings contribute in depicting the progressive composition of a coherent Ambrosian “system of virtues” (the baroque reference point for academical activities), that got into a substantial crisis at the end of seventeenth century.

Texto completoThe Italian Army and the Conquest of Catalonia (1808-1811) A Study of Military Effectiveness in Napoleonic Europe Academic Fields and Disciplines SPS/03 – M-STO/02 The research has the purpose of reconstruct and evaluate the military effectiveness of the Italian Army existed under the reign of Napoleon I. Firstly through a statistic and strategic analysis of the development, and the following deployment, of the military institution of the Kingdom of Italy in the years of its existence (1805-14). Afterwards, a particularly significant case study was chosen, as the campaign of Catalonia (1808-11, in the context of the Peninsular War), in order to assess the operational and tactical contribution of the regiments sent by the Government of Milan and their integration in the overall military apparatus of the First Empire. The thesis wanted to respond to the lack of studies on the Italian army’s behavior in war and, at the same time, to introduce the methodology of the Military Effectiveness Studies (of British and American origin and, by now, enriched by a thirty-year old tradition) in the Italian historiography. The research is primarily based, besides the numerous memoirs of the Italian and French veterans, on the archive documentation of the Secrétairerie d’état impériale (Archives Nationales of Pierrefitte-sur-Seine, Paris), of the French Ministère de la Guerre (Service historique de la Défence, of Vincennes, Paris) and of the Italian Ministero della Guerra (Archivio di Stato di Milano). About the results, it has been verified how the Italian army has become a flexible and suitable instrument for Bonaparte, albeit in a context of substantial overall numerical marginality in comparison to the heterogeneous forces available to the Empire and its others satellites and allied states. Regarding the campaign of Catalonia, instead, it was possible to ascertain the fundamental contribution of the Italian regiments, in an operational and tactical perspective, for the success of the invasion. This was primarily due to the excellent general characteristics shown by the expeditionary force, but also to disciplinary and organizational peculiarities that have made the Italian corps suitable for particularly aggressive operations.
Doctoral thesis, 2022. http://hdl.handle.net/11562/1067044.
Texto completoThe present doctoral thesis has as its phenomenon of interest the lexical-semantic development diachronically undergone by a group of demonyms and ethnonyms related to certain areas of the colonial Spanish Americas between the sixteenth century and the first half of the nineteenth century. Given this general concern, the research presented hereby articulates on the basis of three main purposes. This first of them yields, from a monographic perspective, to the historical report of the lexical forms for a selection of demonyms and ethnonyms and of their respective succession of meanings via a survey carried out in texts produced, within the already mentioned chronological range, both in the peninsular metropolis and the American territories, either as crónicas de Indias (‘chronicles of the Indies’) or relaciones geográficas (‘geographical reports’) and relaciones de viaje (‘travel reports’). The second thesis objective aims, on the basis of the findings obtained from the empirical approach and their appropriate interpretation (by considering the most relevant sociohistorical circumstances), at providing some understanding on the way in which the emergence and usage of denonyms and ethnonyms can contribute, as a linguistic correlate, to explain the evolution of a number of collective identities in the history of the colonial Spanish Americas. The third objective is, in turn, to discuss the extent to which both demonyms and ethnonyms might be understood as part of a wider onomasiological category, i.e., the one called in this thesis denominaciones poblacionales. With the purpose of making the empirical phase of the thesis possible, an essential step of the survey presented hereby is the compilation of a representative historical corpus, capable of satisfying the diachronic, diatopic and type-of-text criteria already mentioned above. Consequently, a part of this thesis will be destined to explain the creation of an ad hoc corpus, in order to allow for the retrieval of diverse usage evidences along the diachronic, diatopic and textual-disciplinary axes. The latter corpus has been designed by compiling crónicas de Indias, on the one hand, and relaciones geográficas and relaciones de viaje, on the other, produced between the sixteenth century and the first half of the nineteenth century, both in peninsular Spain and in the Spanish Americas Spanish (the Viceroyalty of New Spain and its surroundings and the territories once belonging to the Viceroyalty of Peru). Both types of sources were chosen given their early shared ethnographic interest. Furthermore, the electronic platform SketchEngine was used in order to host the sources and then explore them via the search options this tool provides. A further phase of the research project implied the comparison of the data from our corpus with the findings available in two major reference corpora (the Corpus of the Historical dictionary of the Spanish language —Corpus del Diccionario de la lengua española (CDH)— and the Diachronic and Diatopic Corpus of American Spanish —Corpus Diacrónico y Diatópico del Español de América (CORDIAM)—) as well as the metalinguistic descriptions hosted in the New Lexicographic Thesaurus of the Spanish Language —Nuevo Tesoro Lexicográfico de la Lengua Española (NTLLE)—, with the purpose of comparing, confirming and even broadening the historical views on the surveyed lexicon. Along with the philological and lexicological aims, the research does not neglect an evidently interdisciplinary concern. As a consequence of the diachronic interest already mentioned, and thanks to the thesis’ already mentioned second objective, the discussion of the findings shall be understood with the appropriate support of social and political considerations regarding the historical formation of a number of ethnic, national and regional identities along the colonial Spanish Americas. It is therefore expected that the survey hereby presented might contribute to the ethnohistorical insights concerning the emergence of different identities with the insights that historical linguistics may offer on the basis of the advances carried out by corpus linguistics and digital humanities. The present thesis is strongly guided by the hypothesis that, in colonial Spanish contexts in the Americas, given the exploitation of local indigenous identities and the forging of other identities as a consequence of the establishment of Spanish-inspired societies, the resemanticisation of ethnonyms as demonyms and the determining role of European geopolitical perspectives in emergence of collective identities in the region proved to be recurrent along the Spanish possessions in the Americas. In the light of these findings, the onomasiological convenience of the proposal stated throughout the thesis shall be properly stressed: the categorisation of both demonyms and ethnonyms within the continuum claimed for the category called denominaciones poblacionales hereby. It is thus expected to offer some contribution, on the one hand, to the semasiological and onomasiological debates regarding the fluid transition of closely related semantic contents, and, on the other, to the terminological classification of both types of lexical pieces, for the sake of both the (meta)linguistic and sociohistorical thought.
