Texto completoMaria Montessori is one of the most famous and celebrated Italian pedagogists in the world. Due to its speed and geographical extent, the spread of her scientific pedagogy can surely be described as extraordinary, even more since we talk about a woman’s work in the beginning of the twentieth century. It was Il Metodo della Pedagogia Scientifica applicato all’educazione infantile nelle Case dei Bambini, published in Italy in 1909, that brought Montessori to the forefront of the world scene, allowing her to be acclaimed internationally as one of history’s great pioneering educators. Since 1912, the number of translations multiplied, to the point of covering, before the end of the First World War, the European and American scene. In addition, international courses for the training of teachers (the first was organized in Italy in 1913), allowed the spread of the method in India, South America, Austrialia and Asia. My research focuses on the comparative analysis of the Metodo’s first translations, in particular the American edition (1912), the English edition (1912), the Swiss edition (1912) and the French edition (1916), placed in the historical, social, cultural and pedagogical context of reference. Furthermore, great part of the research is dedicated to the many figures who surrounded Maria Montessori and worked as hard as she did to help in the spreading of both her thought and book internationally. Indeed, editors, translators, journalists and intellectuals, as well as politicians and ambassadors played an essential role in her successful career. The project aimed to focus on Montessori’s process of building a scientific and cultural work constantly influenced by a plurality of different cultures, traditions, languages and voices, as well as on the hard work of the author to defend her philosophy from any external interference aimed at distorting it.

Texto completoDuring the fifteenth century a number of laude were destined for the spiritual edification of those condemned to death. The Bolognese confraternity of S. Maria della Morte, founded in 1336 and among the oldest and best-documented Italian Companies of Justice, had a laudario known now in some twelve sources, mostly dating from the second half of the fifteenth century. These laude are often connected to the ‘consolation manuals’ (confortatori) written in some Italian confraternities in order to instruct brethren who in the few hours before death prepared the prisoner to die in a Christian spirit. In the justice laude the poetic identification between the condemned and Christ or martyrs was functional to the main aim of the brethren who assisted prisoners destined to die: by turning the criminal into a saint he could be convinced that his death had a precise function. Indeed, plenary absolution in the afterlife could be obtained through a truly accepted death. The laude in the confortatori clearly had the function of reinforcing these feelings, but there is little evidence on just how this task was realized in practice. During the night preceding the execution of the prisoners, the brethren sought to turn every criminal into a saint: in the end he must have the conviction that his death had a precise function, and thus he would attain complete inner peace and total acceptance of his sentence. This serene attitude was the basis for a plenary absolution in the afterlife, obtained through a death that was fully accepted. This dissertation focuses on the strong motivation of the brethren who decided to enter this kind of confraternity.

Texto completoThe present work starts from the desire to deepen the figure and thought of two leading exponents of the ‘magical’ or ‘occult’ Renaissance in a Germanic milieu: Johannes Trithemius and Cornelius Agrippa. Both located in a chronological and conceptual horizon, on the one hand conditioned by the legacy of Florentine neo-Platonism and the rediscovery of the hermetic-kabbalistic thought that took place between the 15th and 16th centuries, and on the other hand anticipating the variety of authors related to the later theosophical and alchemic current (17th and 18th centuries), Trithemius and Agrippa are examined as the greatest exponents of a ‘ceremonial’, ‘divine’, or ‘high’ magic. Focusing mainly on the key concepts of dignitas and dignificatio hominis, the dissertation aims to analyze an important part of the work of both authors in order to deepen their reflection on magic in the framework of a profound meditation on man and his creative potential in a supernatural sense. The first section focuses primarily on the historical-biographical determination of the figure of Agrippa. A part on critical literature follows. The section closes with a detailed presentation aimed at identifying the working hypothesis on which the dissertation is based. The second section is dedicated to the presentation of the Abbot Trithemius and his magical conception through an in-depth analysis of original texts. The main purpose of the second section is to deepen the nature of the intellectual relationship between the Abbot and Agrippa, especially with regard to the influence that the former might have had on the latter as regards the formulation of a particular kind of theurgic magic. Finally, the third section consists of a careful analysis of some fundamental steps taken from the Book III of De occulta philosophia by Cornelius Agrippa. The notion of ‘divine magic’ is examined in depth. The fundamental lines of an ‘occult’ anthropology are carefully reconstructed. The central part of the section is dedicated to examining the concept of dignificatio in Agrippa. Taken by the author as initiatory “key” (clavis) whose possession guarantees the comprehension of the whole work, the dignificatio constitutes the most eminent arcane, as well as a factor of major peculiarity as well as speculative and operative depth of the De occulta philosophia. Texto completoThis PhD thesis aims to investigate the close bond that, in the first half of the nineteenth century, existed between the sphere of domesticity and the process of building and expanding the U.S. empire, by critically analyzing the contribution of two pioneers of American white reformism, Lydia Maria Child (1802-1880) and Margaret Fuller (1810-1850), and by offering a comparative perspective that takes into account the intersectionality of gender, race and class. The dissertation shows how the exploration of domesticity was used by Child and Fuller on the one hand to develop a strong critique of U.S. imperialist system, becoming part of some of the most vivid and controversial debates in American imperial history - that on the rights and destiny of Native Americans, on the abolition of slavery, on Irish immigration, on the labor question, on the role of the United States in the international political scenario - and, on the other hand, to forge a new female role that was not only closely connected to and dependent on the empire, but that reproduced its contradictions and racial tensions. Without denying their radical significance, the research highlights what appear to be the aporias of their thinking related to the intertwining of complex debates concerning imperial expansion and issues of gender, race and class. Indeed, domesticity sometimes served to justify and reproduce the same contradictions and tensions of continental expansion in the period between the 1820s and the 1850s. Primary sources include published and unpublished material of various kinds, ranging from essays, political pamphlets, children's fiction, novels, domestic manuals, newspaper articles, biographies and travelogues, in addition to private correspondence.

Texto completoThis dissertation focuses on the function and the phenomenology of the Italian Trans-avantgarde’s frame-works. Such evaluation has been performed considering the interesting role given to the frame-work or to any elements laying around the picture which have revised the figure in abstract or fragmentary terms within the works of the group both formed and thought by the critic Achille Bonito Oliva in 1979. Chia, Clemente, Cucchi, De Maria and Paladino have come back to the picture and re-used the picture-frame within their post-modern context of a return towards the figurative language and the painting skill. Thanks to a wide range of pictures, our research shows the different ways and the contrasting ideas according to each Trans-avantgarde artist’s use of the frame-work within his works. To support our research, a deep historical background on the frame-work has been taken into account. This historical approach has been divided into three parts. The first part shows the earliest development of the frame-work starting from 3000 B.C. to XVIII century. The second part, more detailed than the previous one, focuses on the important theme of the “picture-frame” in some artists’ works of the XIX and XX centuries. The third part is about the new aspects of the “frame-work” in the second half of the XIX century that involves the Abstract Expressionism, the New Dada, the Pop Art and other conceptual tendencies of the century to which the Trans-avangardists seem to be linked. On the importance of the return to the frame-work by the Trans-avantgarde, the theorist of the Italian movement Bonito Oliva has given his own idea in an exclusive interview with me. Within the research, this interview has represented a precious possibility to deep-in the main topic. Two more chapters dedicated to some particular case study have been written in the final part of our research. The first chapter is about two Italian private collections and their focus on the relationship between a contemporary work of art framed within an old frame-work; the second chapter stresses the artistic production of an Austrian author Herbert Szusich whose works are frame-works.

Texto completoThe research conducted by the doctor Francesca Garziano Has produced an elaborate On the Carmelite settlement of the trapani city in the 13th-15th centuries. The historical reconstruction presented in the thesis starts with an unusual documentary complex, the Pergamene Fund of the Fardelliana Library in Trapani, whose analysis was devoted to a substantial part of the elaborate. The workbook opens with an introduction illustrating the genesis of the project, the research topics, the methodology used and the sources of the research; Follows a historical note that allows contextualization of the study in the composite political reality of the island. The first part of the thesis is devoted to the reconstruction of the Carmelite Trapanese settlement and consists of four chapters on the development of the Order. The first chapter deals with the first town settlement of the friars and the subsequent transfer outside the walls; The second chapter concerns the architectural development of Annunziata; The third chapter analyzes the property acquired by the friars and the related asset management; In the fourth chapter, the forms of Marian devotion and civic cults have been examined. The second section of the elaboration consists of a documentary appendix to the sources, divided into three parts: the first part concerns the Pergamene Fund of the Fardellian Library, the second part concerns the Archives of the Senate of Trapani, the third part concerns The Roll of Scriptures of the Church of Santa Maria Annunziata. At the end of the thesis are the apparatuses: the notariorum notices, the indices and the tables.
MIGNATTI, ALESSANDRA. "Ritualità e cerimoniali nella Milano della prima metà del Settecento". Doctoral thesis, Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10280/1853.
Texto completoThe object of this research is the whole of the celebrations and preparations connected with the passage of Maria Theresa of Austria and the solemn entry of Archbishop Stampa into Milan in 1739, both exemplifications of the 18th century first half civic rituality and public ceremonials, and representations which engaged the city. A confrontation has also been made with the possesso of Maria Theresa, enacted in absentia in 1741. By means of a comparative analysis of the primary sources – printed, hamdwritten and ichnographic as well – it has been possible to reconstruct the role of etiquette norms, ceremonials and of the entire dramaturgy of festival events. The research has also brought to light the apparati set up by the Collegio dei Giureconsulti, so far ignored by studies. It has highlighted rhetorical mechanisms, actions, representational aspects which remain, some of them pertaining to the archetype sphere. Even if simplified, the ceremonials still show a strong cult of regality. The triumphal entry proves to be a meaningful moment to bring the city back to the imaginary of the origins which constitutes its identity and to renovate a new era. The necessity of the feast, of ritualistic moments of representation and auto representation is pointed out; and also the dramaturgic and not ornamental role of decorative elements like the baldachin, the arch, the carriage, the portrait, in a culture which conferred great value to images.
