Texto completoIn pulsed power systems, inductive energy storage has an advantage over capacitive storage because of its higher energy density. Exploiting this advantage requires the use of an opening switch to generate the voltage pulse. Moreover, the growing need for reliable pulsed power generators, particularly for industrial applications, strongly supports the adoption of solid-state solutions. The Semiconductor Opening Switch (SOS) diode developed in the 1990s at the Institute of Electrophysics in Russia is an ideal candidate for solid-state opening switching because of its ability to reliably generate high-power pulses at high repetition rates while offering long lifetime and maintenance-free operation. However, the lack of SOS diode manufacturers prevents their widespread use. This thesis is therefore devoted to the study of off-the-shelf (OTS) diodes capable of rapidly switching high currents and generating nanosecond voltages of up to 500 kV. The research includes the investigation of various diode types including rectifier, avalanche, fast recovery, and transient voltage suppression (TVS) diodes as opening switches in comparison with state-of-the-art SOS diodes. Low, medium, and high-energy (25 mJ, 10 J, and 40 J respectively) test benches are developed for the experiments. Their circuits use a single magnetic element – a saturable pulse transformer – resulting in high energy efficiency. Several nanocrystalline cores are examined for optimum transformer performance at an energy of 10 J. Among the diodes investigated at 25 mJ and 10 J energy, the TVS and rectifying diodes stand out particularly promising with nanosecond switching time and generated voltages in the kilovolt range. Finally, a 40 J pulsed power generator prototype (GO-SSOS) based on an OTS opening switch consisting of rectifier diodes is developed. The GO-SSOS achieves a peak power of more than 300 MW with an energy efficiency ranging from 35% to 70% depending on the load value. Across a 1 kΩ load, the voltage pulse generated reaches 500 kV amplitude with a rise time of 36 ns and a pulse width of 80 ns. The system shows high reproducibility at a repetition rate of 60 Hz and is used to demonstrate a corona discharge application. The work proves the reliability of the OTS diodes in SOS mode, revealing no degradation after thousands of pulses. It also offers the prospect of using this technology in industrial applications such as electron-beam sterilization

Texto completoEnergy conversion and storage have always been the two critical issues for human society. In this thesis, we focus on the development of sustainable carbon materials for effective electrochemical energy storage, especially for supercapacitors, and supported nickel catalysts for chemical energy conversion and storage, mainly on CO2 methanation. Two different biomass derived carbon structures, i.e. hierarchical carbon foam and graphene-like carbon nanosheets, have been synthesized and applied for supercapacitor. Exceptional electrochemical performances have been obtained. Meanwhile, nickel decorated macroscopic shape catalyst (Ni/OCF) has been developed for CO2 methanation with enhanced catalytic performance powered by electromagnetic induction heating (IH). The rapid energy regulation capability of IH system to jugulate the problem of temperature runaway has also been investigated in the last part using powdered alumina supported nickel catalyst for this exothermic reaction

Texto completoPumped-hydro storage plants (PSP) are important assets to stabilize electric grids.Variable speed technologies can improve the cycle efficiency and the power adjustability of PSPs. Current technologies such as fully-fed machines or Doubly-Fed Induction Machines (DFIM) have drawbacks. In this work, the focus will be on an unconventional design of variable speed machine: the Brushless Doubly-Fed Induction Machine (BDFM). The objectives are to better understand the working principles of this machine so as to size it, optimize it, and compare it to other types of variable speed machines.Following a review of sizing and optimization techniques for conventional machines, similar approaches are investigated for BDFMs. Two different methods for faster Finite-Element (FE) simulations of the BDFM are presented: a fast one without saturation considerations and another one based on the principle of magneto-harmonic simulations. A careful harmonic analysis combined with a comparison of cross-coupling tests between FE simulations and results of equivalent circuit found in the literature will lead to a modification of the BDFM equivalent circuit. A new method to determine the parameters of thisequivalent circuit from electrical tests is presented. The parameters determination from the geometry will also be considered for the elaboration of a derivable semi-analytical model. Such a model, paired with a 1st order optimization algorithm could be extremely powerful during the sizing of a BDFM. The potential of such an approach is shown in this work with the optimization of an Induction Machine
