ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study was prompted by two significant aspects within the South African training field. Firstly, the attitude of the South African Government towards training in terms of legislation made it evident that trainers will progressively playa more important role in organisations. Secondly, although literature regard the trainer as one of the important role-players in the training situation, no substantial research has been done on training style as an aspect that can influence the trainer's performance and ultimately the effectiveness of training. In order to address this void, the research was dedicated to determine whether a systematic relationship exists between the personality of a __trainer and his/her training style. The following topics were examined by means of a selective study of the literature: adult learners as the target _ of training programmes; pedagogy and andragogy as orientations to training; the trainer; the definition of training style; the trait theory of personality as the basis of the study; and empirical studies done on the topic prior to this study. In order to gather the necessary information, three questionnaires were administered to a sample of 96 trainers. The 16-PF, which is an established questionnaire, was used to collect data about the personality traits of the respondents. Furthermore, a questionnaire namely the Training Style Inventory was developed to measure the training style of trainers. Trainers were then accordingly grouped in one of five types of training styles. The last questionnaire gathered information regarding demographic aspects of the sample. The study found limited support for the hypothesis that there exists a systematic relationship between personality and training style. However, it was found that certain dimensions of personality do playa role in the manifestation of a certain training style.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Hierdie studie was geinspireer deur twee opmerklike aspekte binne die Suid-Afrikaanse opleidingsveld. Eerstens, die Suid-Afrikaanse Regering se houding jeens opleiding in terme van wetgewing, het dit duidelik gemaak dat opleiers voortaan 'n toenemend belangrike rol in organisasies sal vervul. Ten tweede het navorsing reeds bevestig dat die opleier een van die belangrike rolspelers in die opleiding situasie is. Daar is egter tot op hede geen noemenswaardige navorsing gedoen op opleidingstyl as 'n aspek wat die werkverrigting van die opleier en uiteindelik die effektiwiteit van opleiding beïnvloed nie. Ten einde hierdie leemte aan te spreek, was die doel van hiedie navorsing om te bepaal of daar 'n sistematiese verband bestaan tussen die persoonlikheid van 'n opleier en syjhaar opleidingstyl. Deur middel van selektiewe literatuurstudie is die volgende ondersoek: die volwasse leerder as die teiken van opleidingsprogramme; pedagogie en andragogie as orientasies tot opleiding; die opleier; definiering van opleidingstyl; die trekteorie van persoonlikheid as die basis van die studie; en empiriese studies oor die onderwerp wat hierdie navorsing vooraf gegaan het. Om die nodige inligting in te samel is drie vraelyste deur 'n steekproef van 96 opleiers ingevul. The 21st century has awakened a call for new leaders to cope with the demands of the rapidly changing world of work which emphasises flatter structures, and a more democratic style of leadership. When looking at the changing competencies of the new leader, it is postulate that leadership takes into consideration the emotional attributes as well as the rational aspects of the individual. From this it becomes evident that the leaders of the 21st century would have to be emotionally intelligent to motivate employees to achieve organizational goals. The aim of this study was to investigate if there is a relationship between emotional intelligence and leadership styles in middle to senior managers.

Leadership Development Programs (LDPs) programs are employed by firms globally in different multiple manners that are aimed at accelerating the development and growth of highly capable candidates. Among these candidates, depending on the particular LDP, may be those possess engineering skills typically afforded through engineering education as measured by completion of an engineering degree. Infrastructure reductions might be afforded corporations if multiple LDPs could be supplanted with one program such as an Engineering Leadership Development Program. In practice, however, economic constraints limited the total sample population of this category to 67 (48 with engineering degrees and 15 without). Employing SPSS Sample Power 3, based on the pilot testing for CPMs, 113 subjects per group (with and without engineering degrees - totaling 226) would be required to yield a power of 80%, and of the 350 received completed surveys received, CPMs meeting the desired criteria accounted for only 63 (18%) of the total number of rated organizational leaders. Consequently, while all testing included the CPM group, the scope was expanded to also include managers with and without PMI certifications as well as managers with and without engineering degrees. The first research hypothesis was Ho: There is no affiliation amongst Transformational Leadership (TL) and engineering education. Thus, the author’s aim is to determine the role, if any, that engineering education plays in perceived leadership style as exhibited by CPMs and non-CPMs holding engineering degrees (e.g. EE, ME, IE, etc.) versus the same without engineering degrees. A secondary goal is to determine, within the management category, which style (transformational or transactional) serves as the dominant style of leadership. With this in mind, the independent variable, CPMs with and without engineering degrees, was operationally defined consistent with this Project.

Lateral thinking has become an important topic in business and one of the apparent solutions to the dilemma of acquiring more creativity in the organisation has been to train employees in lateral thinking. This study had three objectives. To determine whether delegates attending lateral thinking training acquired more lateral thinking skills and knowledge than those without this training. To determine whether lateral thinking training impacted on style of thinking and to determine whether preferred styles of thinking facilitated the acquisition of lateral thinking skills. An experimental group was trained in lateral thinking. Subjects were tested on their lateral thinking skills before and after training. Subjects were also tested to assess their cognitive style before training and six months thereafter. A control group was tested in a similar fashion.

The purpose of my studies was to get a deeper understanding of small companies’ organization logic and to find out if they had adopted new management concepts such as Just-In-Time, Total Quality Management, Time Based Management, Business Process Reengineering, Lean Production and concepts of Learning Organization, or if they were influenced by these concepts in their way to organize production and labor. More specific research questions were: What are the opportunities and obstacles for implementation of new management concepts in small industrial organizations? What management strategies are used in small companies? How do small companies deal with learning and training? How does flexibility manifest itself in small companies? How do small companies relate themselves to the environment and are they cooperating with other companies? The results are presented in seven papers. The research method is based on Yin’s case study research, and was conducted in four case studies of small industrial organizations with fewer than 50 employees. The companies are located in the county of Norrbotten and the area of Gnosjö in Sweden, and in the state of Minnesota in the United States. The first two studies can be regarded as pilot studies and the result is presented in paper 1 and 2. The third study is the main study, and was conducted in 25 small metal job shops, 12 in Sweden and 13 in the United States (papers 3-5). In the fourth study I explore the contextual conditions for interorganizational networks (paper 6). The seventh paper discusses interaction and communication in network cooperation based on experiences from previous studies of interorganizational network and from the main study. Some important results from the pilot studies show that companies stay competitive at the market, increase the productivity and even grow although they have a traditional structure and management, and actually do nothing to change (papers 1 and 2). Important results from the main study show that the managers in these companies do not use conventional management tools in the management process. Operative and strategic management is overlapping each other or totally integrated. Strategies have emerged rather than been formulated after analyzing internal and external conditions. The strategic management process is based on intuition, feelings and experiences (paper 3). Analyzing knowledge management in these companies shows that neither the codification nor the personalization strategy is, or even can be, fully practiced in these companies. Every job is different and explores new problems in job-shops giving service to larger companies, which implicate that there is little use of codifying solutions or setting up check lists for trouble-shooting. Even if some learning is carried out in the daily work, there are obstacles to fully practice a personalization strategy because that demands extensive cultural, structural and organizational changes (paper 4). The companies in the main study are relatively inflexible or even rigid. External flexibility demands internal stability, and the most flexible way to adapt to market demand is to be very stable and to keep that stability. Flexibility in larger corporations depends on stability in the small subcontracting companies (paper 5). Cooperation with other companies in the local society or in the region is dependent on how the social capital was created in a historical perspective. The shared system of values can include positive or negative attitudes towards private business initiatives, which in turn affects entrepreneurship and local industrial development, as well as, interorganizational networking. An exogenous attitude toward local industrial development also promotes an exogenous attitude toward interorganizational cooperation. A more exogenous attitude will more likely includes a more open attitude to organizations and persons outside the local society and towards cooperation that is not based on personal ties. This means that industrial districts like Gnosjö will not necessarily cope better with environmental uncertainty (paper 6). A network organization run by a professional manager, where the members are no longer involved in planning and realization of activities normally becomes institutionalized. The members do not experience the network as network cooperation but as a service organization giving its members exclusive service in specific issues (paper 7). The small companies studied have not implemented any of the analyzed concepts and are not extensively influenced by the concepts while organizing their production. On the other hand, by analyzing new management concepts, it is obvious that they are all heavily influenced by Japanese management philosophies and that their inventors are influenced by their predecessors, who in turn were all deeply influenced by Taylor and his Theories of Scientific Management. If Taylor did not find “the best way” to organize industrial organizations, why should these new management concepts constitute that way? One of the first questions starting this research process still remains: Are there actually any “new” management concepts or are they only a new wrapping of Taylor’s old management ideas? Is the “new” management and organizational logic that we for years have tried to implement in all kinds of organizations, nothing more than a logical response to the present human, technological and environmental conditions? What makes then small manufacturing companies survive and even grow without adopting new management and production concepts? Maybe they are just trying to intuitively and logically respond to environmental conditions in a manner known for a hundred years? There is still much left before we are able to fully understand the organizational logic of small companies. Meanwhile, we are still scientifically occupied searching for the best way…

Nuestro grupo de trabajo se encuentra conformado por mujeres interesadas en incursionar en el ámbito empresarial del sector del vestir, crean para ello la marca “My Style”. Para este proyecto de negocio hemos procedido a realizar un análisis, considerando aspectos del entorno externo, interno, estableciendo estrategias a las que apuntaremos para alcanzar el logro de nuestros objetivos. Asimismo, hemos diseñado un plan de marketing, operacional, de recursos humanos, y económico-financiero, para poder determinar la viabilidad de nuestra propuesta. El modelo de negocio de “My Style”, consiste en diseñar y confeccionar la “prenda de vestir” hecha a medida, con tela de calidad, accesorios y acabados elegidos por el propio cliente y, principalmente elaborado con el fin de que lo distinga del resto y sobre todo que con ello consiga su “satisfacción”. La elección del sector al que hemos decidido dirigimos, es para aquel en el que el cliente, al momento de acercarse a una tienda por departamento, bazar u otros, encuentra la prenda de su talla, pero ésta es muy chica o muy grande y no le estiliza como así lo desea. Es, hacia ese malestar al que nos enfocaremos, a fin de rebatirlo y, es ahí en donde nuestro Asesor de Moda se presenta y diseña la “prenda de vestir”, mostrando y recomendando nuestra diferente gama de telas seleccionadas exclusivamente para ellos; asimismo, lo acompañaremos en la elección de los acabados, accesorios y brindaremos consejos que le servirán para tener un estilo único y exclusivo, para que sea un ejecutivo distinguido. Our group is composed of women who are interested in creating and developing a business in the Clothing Line Industry, this is how the “My Style” brand is created. For this business venture we have created and analysis, considering all aspects of the environment. We have established strategies that we will use to reach our goal. We have developed various plans such as marketing, operations, human resources and financial to establish a viable way to our business proposal. The business proposal for “My Style” consists in designing and making a style of “clothing” that is tailored specific to the client, with fabric of high quality, accessories and designs chosen by the client. This is done so that the finished product is different from everything else and that it “satisfies” the clientele. We have chosen a sector that targets customers which typically approach a mall, boutique, or other places and always finds clothes that is either too big or too tight, it’s never perfect fit or in the style that they prefer. It is here where we will put our focus on and set our targets so that we put an end to this trend. It is here where our stylist will introduce the idea of designing “clothing” to fit your needs and tastes. He or She will show the client various designs and recommend from our various fabrics what fits them better. We will then choose the accessories and finishes that go along with each outfit, and provide advice as how else to accessorize the look. These suggestions will help make the style exclusive so that our clients are distinguished executives.

Entre 1938 et 1965, la saliculture taïwanaise subit un interventionnisme étatique significatif, notamment au sein de la production. Le contexte est celui d’un temps de guerre dont l’issue, 1945, est marquée par le remplacement d’une autorité coloniale, japonaise, par une autre, chinoise. Cette ingérence permet aux fonctionnaires industriels de définir le cadre et les orientations de l’organisation industrielle, mais également d’intervenir tant dans la gestion de l’activité professionnelle en tant que telle que dans les termes de la vie privée et socio-culturelle saunière. L’ensemble de ces interventions manifeste un style national de l’industrie salicole insulaire formé grâce aux rencontres des pratiques, des pensées et des modes productifs remaniés, reformulés et réinterprétés à Taïwan. Ce secteur insulaire peut, ainsi, être considéré comme un laboratoire de fusion de différentes actions gestionnaires, autrement dit comme un espace de convergence entre trois caractères nationaux : taïwanais, japonais et chinois
Between 1938 and 1965, the Taïwanese salt industry suffered significant state interventionism, especially in terms of production. This period was a time of war, and its main outcome, in 1945, was the replacement of Japanese colonial authority with Chinese. This interference allowed industrial officials to not only define the framework and orientations of the industrial organization but also intervene both in the management of the professional activities and in the salt workers’ private and sociocultural lives. All of these interventions demonstrate the national style of the island’s salt industry, a style that has been formed through encountering various practices, thoughts, and productive modes, which have been reworked, reformulated, and reinterpreted as needed. This sector of the island can therefore be considered a laboratory for the fusion of different managerial practices—in other words, a space of convergence for three national characters: the Taïwanese, Japanese, and Chinese

Resumen

The present research study examined the strength and direction of the correlations between three leadership styles (transformational, transactional, & servant) and satisfaction with leadership and motivation as outcomes of leadership style. A web-based survey was used to collect data from 181 professional Latino employees in the U.S. The Leadership Style Survey was combined from the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ) and the Servant Leadership Questionnaire (SLQ), which measured transformational, transactional, and servant leadership styles, as well as satisfaction with leadership and motivation. Data was collected about Latino employees' perceptions of their supervisors' leadership styles, and satisfaction with leadership and motivation. Results from one-sample t-tests indicated Latino employees' responses to the leadership, satisfaction, and motivation scales were significantly lower than the norm. All Pearson correlations indicated there were strong positive relationships between each of the leadership styles and satisfaction with leadership and motivation. More importantly, Fisher r-to- Z transformations demonstrated that correlations found on the Latino sample were significantly higher than the correlational norms. The findings suggest Latinos are less motivated and less satisfied with their current leaders, however characteristics of transformational, transactional, and servant leadership are highly important to Latino employees and are highly correlated to their motivation and satisfaction with leadership. Cultural values may have a strong impact on Latino professional employees' evaluation of their supervisors. The results also highlight that the responses from the Latino sample are significantly higher in terms of the relationship between servant, transformational, and transactional leadership and satisfaction with leadership and motivation.

Americans spent approximately $47.7 billion on pet products and services in 2010, an increase of 4.8% over 2009, making the pet industry a market segment ripe with opportunity for entrepreneurial small business venture (American Pet Products Association, 2013). Small businesses invite innovation, create and provide new jobs, foster entrepreneurial spirit and creativity, and create competition that drives future business endeavors (Hillary, 2001). The pet dog industry is a salient example of entrepreneurial activity in which the pressures of business, economics, and learning coalesce. Because small businesses bolster about half of the private-sector economy and represent more than 99% of all business firms (Small Business Administration, 2013), it is useful for small business owners to learn and prosper as entrepreneurs. "Entrepreneurship is a learning process, and a theory of entrepreneurship requires a theory of learning" (Minniti, 2010, p. 9). However, there is still limited knowledge and understanding of the interaction between learning and entrepreneurship, and such a process remains one of the most neglected areas of entrepreneurial research and thus understanding (Deakins and Freel, 1999). This study explored entrepreneurial decision making by using the construct of David A. Kolb's Learning Style Inventory to examine an entrepreneurial operation in the pet dog-training industry. The researcher worked hand-in-hand with the entrepreneur in a collaborative partnership to explore the phenomenon using narrative inquiry research methods. A series of semi-structured interviews were used to collect and analyze stories and identify key considerations for learning style in relation to entrepreneurship. The results showed the entrepreneur's preferred learning style aligned with his expressed style and demonstrated a keen sense of operations awareness. Additionally, the entrepreneur had learned how to leverage his strengths over time while recognizing and compensating for his weaknesses. For a novice or someone with a desire to learn more about their own entrepreneurial inclinations, results from a learning style instrument could provide such understandings with helpful implications for small business ownership. Future studies could contribute to entrepreneurial research and add greater voice to the pet dog industry.

The cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) plays a significant role in providing functional stability to the canine stifle joint and has been the topic of an increasing amount of attention in the veterinary community. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of CCL deficiency and common procedures for treatment of a ruptured CCL on patellar location within the trochlear groove. Five identical and anatomically accurate physical models of the left hind limb of a healthy dog were constructed using a combination of rapid-prototyping technologies and casting techniques. One model remained the intact control, one simulated a CCL deficient stifle and each of the remaining models underwent one of the three tibial osteotomy procedures to be examined: the Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy (TPLO), Tibial Tuberosity Advancement (TTA), and the Triple Tibial Osteotomy (TTO). Physical testing via a custom testing apparatus was carried out for five stifle positions (75º, 96º, 113º, 130º, 148º) representing the normal range of motion of a large-breed dog. Confirmation of a cranial translation following transection of the CCL was in good agreement with literature. Cranial cruciate transection also caused a slight proximal shift of the patella with respect to the trochlear groove. The results of the models further suggest that both the TPLO and TTO procedures result in a more proximally located patella with respect to the trochlear groove, while the TTA results in a more distally located patella.

Japanese-style management has attracted a lot of attention from managers, business executives and scholars worldwide. The sudden intensity of interest in the so-called Japanese Management Model has been partly due to the rapid ascendancy of Japan as, a leading economic superpower in a relatively short period after her humiliating defeat in the Second World War. In 1982, Malaysia officially launched the "Look East" policy to emulate the Japanese by adopting Japanese-style management practices. It was believed that by adopting Japanese-style management techniques, the Malaysians can replicate the Japanese success. This study aims to discuss what constitutes Japanese-style management and also to determine if it can be transferred to the Malaysian public enterprise sector. From this study, it was revealed that only some elements of Japanese-style management are transferable to Malaysian public enterprises. There is a number of problems encountered in trying to transfer the Japanese practices to Malaysian public enterprise sector, especially if they are not compatible with the Malaysian values. The problems of transferring Japanese management techniques across national boundaries are further compounded when the transfer is from private sector to public sector. Even in the case of Japan, her public enterprise sector does not even have a reputation of efficient management. It was also found that despite the official policy and persistent effort towards "Japanisation" by the government, the majority of Malaysian workforce still prefer the present existing management system. To some extent, the study has provided some answers to questions regarding the feasibility of adopting the Japanese-style management. But most important of all, the study has revealed that Japanese-style management is not a panacea to the problems confronting the public enterprise sector in Malaysia.

The purpose of this research is to investigate the relationship between attributional style and Information Technology (IT) project perception at varying job responsibility levels. To achieve this thirty participants were recruited from a large government department in the three distinct job responsibility levels of support worker (i.e. individual who undertakes activities under general direction), line manager (i.e. individual who undertakes activities under limited direction and typically performs role of team leader) and executive manager (i.e. individual who undertakes activities that involve a high a level of management skill under broad direction) and interviewed using a modified Work Attributional Style Questionnaire (WASQ) with emergent themes subsequently explored through four focus groups. Based on the research findings all job responsibility levels tend to exhibit an optimistic attributional style that characterises positive work adjustment and self-esteem. However, the attribution of failure to causes that will persist in future projects by all job responsibility levels alongside the attribution of failure to causes that have impacts beyond the project by line and executive managers have the potential to undermine this tendency to exhibit an optimistic attributional style. Reasons for the attribution of failure to causes that have impacts beyond the project include the adverse impact on perceived professionalism by peers following failure, continued inability to influence stakeholders and/or management, strategic impact of the project failure and the daunting complexity of the social and technical challenges at the macro level Whilst the tendency to exhibit an optimistic attributional style by all job responsibility levels is indicative of positive work adjustment and selfesteem, practitioners should be cognisant that individuals exhibiting an optimistic attributional style are less likely to take responsibility for IT project failure (i.e. attribute failure to situational and uncontrollable causes). This has the potential to adversely impact organisational learning. To increase the likelihood of individuals taking responsibility for IT project failure practitioners should seek to encourage individuals to freely admit to faults and acknowledge errors whilst seeking to preserve their self-worth.

This study aims to improve component placement sequencing of a number of PCBs produced on a turret style SMT machine. After modeling the problem and having found that an optimal solution to the real PCB problem is hard to be achieved because of the concurrent behavior of the machine and the PCB design parameters, two heuristics are developed by oversimplifying the problem down to TSP. Performance of the heuristics and the lower bounds is evaluated by comparing the results with the optimal solution for two sets of randomly generated PCBs. The heuristic solutions are also compared with the lower bounds and the current implementation for the real PCBs. It is found out that the heuristics improve the current efficiency figures of the company.

The research focused on three main themes in the Kuwait society. The first study is developed to measure the differences in the characteristics of the work environment between the public and the private sectors within Kuwait labor force. The study had been conducted on 80 managers of both sexes and 266 employees of both sexes from the public sector, and 80 managers of both sexes and 274 employees of both sexes from the private sector. The results had indicated that according to the combined group (employees and managers, both sexes), the private sector exceeded the public sector regarding: involvement, peer-cohesion, task orientation, work-pressure, clarity, control, innovation and physical-comfort. Only the employees sample showed similar results. By comparing the male employees and the female employees in both sectors, it was clear that males had higher mean scores than females regarding involvement, task orientation, work-pressure, clarity, and control. Also, the results of the manager group is consistent with the combined group (both employees and managers, both sexes). However, the comparison between the male managers and female managers in both sectors indicated that, involvement, staff-support, clarity, control, innovation, and physical-comfort were higher in males than their females counterparts. The second study is designed to clarify any differences in personality traits between male and female Kuwaiti managers. The study has been conducted on 150 male and 150 female managers from Kuwait society. The results showed few differences between male and female managers. It was clear that males were more lively or enthusiastic and more imaginative than females. While, females were more depressive (as a personality characteristic) or apprehensive than male managers. The third study is concerned with the status profile of Kuwaiti women during the oil era (1946-1960) and developing period (1960-1985) regarding her social, educational, and vocational status. So, regarding work environment, work in the private sector was more likely to be seen as high in the involvement factor, more concerned with the work's regulations, conscientious, and more likely to remain and conform to the organization's disciplinary systems, more committed to new styles and modern systems in their jobs to achieve their targets, and they were more interested with their work place, than their public staff counterparts. Also, the private sector is often seen as an efficient and productive work sector in comparison with the public sector. Regarding the personality traits, Kuwaiti male managers appear to be more enthusiastic and lively with strong and imaginative personality traits. However, the Kuwaiti female managers appear to have strong apprehensive personality traits.

This thesis examines the constructs of organizational commitment, job satisfaction, and work stress, and the extent to which they are affected by perceptions of organizational justice and leadership styles. Much of the literature related to these topics focuses on exploring the relationship between either justice and commitment or leadership and commitment, with very little research investigating the way that justice and leadership combine to affect outcome variables such as commitment, satisfaction, and stress. This study reviewed the literature that details these topics in order to facilitate the understanding necessary to then focus on the relationship between commitment, organizational justice, and leadership style, as well as job satisfaction and work stress. It is important to understand how these three concepts affect one another, as increasing employee commitment is a goal of many, if not all organizations, and understanding how to better influence and facilitate it could be very valuable information.

Leadership is arguably the most studied discipline and yet is equally the least understood subject since it involves unpredictable human beings. In the same vein, as managers and leaders operate, they operate within the context of followers who have their own expectations from leadership. Consequently, many leadership theories have been developed and at best they are largely a variety of the other with extremities in other aspects. Because there are other people apart from the leader, it means consideration should be made of the characteristics of the followership. There is therefore a need for congruency between the leadership and the followership if the leader is to be influential. Interpersonal skills are critical for this type of leadership, and some research findings indicated that extroverts who are people centered are likely to be more effective. In the process, the leader needs to build relationships as evidenced by the way the leader will encourage, appreciate, forgive, understand others, and be prepared to listen to peers and followers. This papers posits that people oriented leaders develop closeness to the followers and are empathetic, whilst they try to get their work done. The preliminary findings established that a people focused leader will have more influence on the followership, and is most likely to be empathetic to his subordinates.

This thesis contributes to the literature of asset comovement and crisis contagion in several aspects. First, it extends the study of contagion using an asset pricing framework to the two recent crises: the Global Financial crisis and the European debt crisis, and to a wider set of markets, including both developed and developing markets in order to compare and contrast the effects of different crises on different markets. Second, the thesis studies in detail the time-varying patterns of integration during crisis episodes. An interesting finding is that markets tend to become segmented during the latter half of a severe crisis. In other words, if a crisis is strong enough it can hamper the integration process. Such behaviours are observed in both developed and developing markets. Third, the thesis investigates the comovement and contagion of style portfolios in response to increasing interest in style investing. More specifically, it examines if portfolios sorted based on different firm characteristics exhibit different integration and contagion behaviours during different crises and finds distinct differences in the impact on integration and level of contagion from each crisis. The estimated results indicate complex integration patterns which have strong impacts on diversification. Similar to country portfolios, style portfolios also become segmented during the crises. Although contagion signals are detected, there is no clear evidence regarding which portfolios are more prone to contagion. Finally the thesis studies the behaviours of both time-varying global and regional integration patterns of each industry sector overtime and during each financial crisis and examines cross-region contagion for all the industries in the world. Empirical results provide evidence that contagion can occur in the same industry across region. Hence the result supports diversification across different industries across different regions rather than holding stocks of the same industry across regions.

While all these elements were reflecting his style, several questions come to mind: what is the essence key of his impact and his originality. ENGLISH ABSTRACT: In the current South African context the Government places a great deal of emphasis on the importance of adult training and development as a solution for addressing many social and economic problems. It is therefore important to investigate all aspects regarding the training context in order to optimise learning. The trainer plays an integral part within this system. Although literature regards the trainer as very important for training success, very little substantial research has been documented with regards to the influential factors on the training style orientation that trainers use when training adults. In order to investigate this problem, a study of the relevant literature is done. The following topics are examined for this purpose: The training system and the components thereof, andragogy and pedagogy as training style orientations, several trait theories of personality as the basis of the study, locus of control as a personality trait, and the influence of personality and more specifically locus of control within work-related settings. Three questionnaires were administered on a sample of 100 respondents, i.e. a Demographic questionnaire, the Training Style Inventory and the Locus of Control Inventory in order to generate data to investigate the research problem and hypotheses. The Demographic Questionnaire collected data regarding gender, age, qualifications, training experience, ethnicity, subject area of the training content, and type of organisation. The Training Style Inventory measured the training style orientation of the trainer respondents, and the Locus of Control Inventory was used to measure the locus of control of respondents. The results indicate support for the hypothesis that there is a statistical significant correlation between locus of control and training style orientation. More specifically, there is a statistically significant correlation between internal locus of control and the andragogical training style orientation, and also between external locus of control and the pedagogical training style orientation. The main objectives of this study were successfully achieved and documented. Conclusions and recommendations for further research are made. It is recommended that future research replicate the study with a greater and random sample of respondents, within the South African context. Also, investigating the effectiveness of the trainers as a result of their locus of control and training style orientation is an interesting possibility for future research.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die Suid-Afrikaanse regering plaas groot klem op die belangrikheid van volwasse opleiding en ontwikkeling in die huidige Suid-Afrikaanse konteks as 'n moontlike oplossing vir etlike sosiale en ekonomiese probleme. In 'n poging om leer te optimeer, is dit dus noodsaaklik om alle aspekte binne die opleidingskonteks deeglik in oënskou te neem. Die opleier speel 'n baie belangrike rol in die sukses van die opleidingsintervensie. Alhoewel die opleier binne die literatuur wel as In belangrike rolspeler in die sukses van opleidingsintervensies geag word, is daar baie min navorsing gedokumenteer oor die faktore wat die opleidingstyl wat opleiers tydens intervensies gebruik, beïnvloed. 'n Studie van die beskikbare literatuur ondersoek hierdie probleem. Die volgende onderwerpe is vir die doelondersoek: Die opleidingstelsel en die komponente daarvan, andragogie en pedagogie as opleidingstyloriëntasies, verskeie persoonlikheidstrekteorieë as die grondslag van die studie, lokus van beheer as 'n persoonlikheidstrek, en die invloed van persoonlikheid en meer spesifiek lokus van beheer binne die werksplek. Die data wat nodig is om die navorsingsprobleem te ondersoek en die hipoteses te toets, is ingesamel deur 100 respondente elk drie vraelyste te laat voltooi, naamlik 'n Demografiese vraelys, 'n Opleidingstylvraelys en 'n Lokus van Beheer-vraelys. Die demografiese vraelys het inligting ingesamel ten opsigte van geslag, ouderdom, kwalifikasies, opleidingservaring, etnisiteit, onderwerp van die opleidingsinhoud en die tipe organisasie betrokke. Die hoofdoelwitte van hierdie studie is suksesvol bereik en gedokumenteer. Gevolgtrekkings en aanbevelings vir toekomstige navorsing word ook gemaak. Die aanbeveling is dat toekomstige navorsing hierdie studie herhaal binne die Suid- Afrikaanse konteks. Die studie behoort ook 'n groter en ewekansige steekproef in te sluit. Die effektiwiteit van die opleiers as 'n resultaat van hul lokus van beheer en opleidingstyloriëntasie is ook 'n interessante moontlikheid vir verdere navorsing.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship among prolonged teacher stress (or burnout), teachers' perceptions of leadership style adaptability, and teacher irrational belief systems.;The York County School Division was chosen because of the relative availability of subjects. Three surveys measuring teachers' perceptions of leadership style and style adaptability, teachers' irrational belief systems, and prolonged teacher stress, were disseminated among elementary classroom teachers in the county. Out of 100 elementary school teachers surveyed, there were 71 responses.;Three dimensions of burnout were measured: Emotional Exhaustion, Depersonalization, and Personal Accomplishment. It was hypothesized that there would be no significant relationship among (1) emotional exhaustion, teacher's perceptions of principal leadership adaptability, teachers' irrational beliefs and the covariates of class size, percentage of discipline problems, percentage of students below grade in reading, percentage of students with IEP's and years of teaching experience (2) depersonalization, teachers' perceptions of principal leadership adaptability, teachers' irrational beliefs, and the covariates, and (3) personal accomplishments, teachers' perceptions of principal leadership adaptability, teachers' irrational beliefs, and the covariates.;It was concluded that a significant relationship exists between emotional exhaustion of teachers and the number of students in IEP's, between personal accomplishment and leadership adaptability, and between personal accomplishment and percentage of students with discipline problems. No significant relationship showed with the subscale of depersonalization, but this result was likely affected by sample size.;Further study is needed to evaluate the relationship between depersonalization and the predictor variables and to ascertain the degree of the relationship between leadership style and predictor variables.

La recherche souligne l’importance patrimonial des Écoles d’Apprentis et d’Artisans (Escolas de Aprendizes e Artífices - EAAs) brésiliennes, en se concentrant sur l’École d’Apprentis et d’Artisans de la Parahyba (EAA-PB). Ces écoles fut crées de l'ancienne République Fédérative du Brésil, dans un contexte de politiques publiques de promotion de projets éducatifs professionnels (Décret-loi nº. 7 566 du 23 septembre 1909). Les objectifs de l'État Fédéral étaient multiples : répondre la fois une demande de main-d'œuvre industrielle qualifiée et à la fois contenir les mouvements des jeunes et émeutes provoqués par le chômage. Ce projet du gouvernement fédéral a permis la création de dix-neuf écoles professionnelles, ceux-là réparties stratégiquement dans tout le pays. Dans ce contexte d’industrialisation et de modernisation des villes brésiliennes, le style néocolonial fut un des langages architecturaux utilisés. Cette recherche s'intéresse la création de ces institutions brésiliennes avec un focus sur l’EAA-PB. L’étude vise : documenter la valeur incontestée de ce patrimoine éducatif et industriel à travers d’un regard social, politique et architectural ; étudier comment les écoles professionnelles étrangères (nord-américaines et français) de la fin du XIXe siècle et début du XXe siècle influencèrent les École d’Apprentis et d’Artisans. Pour cette recherche, nous avons compilée des données historiques, des relevés architecturaux, des registres iconographiques et éducatifs. Le résultat de ce travail a eu pour but fournir un document qui démontrai l'importance de l’EAAs au développement de l’enseignement professionnel à niveaux national et international; ABSTRACT: The research highlights the importance of the cultural heritage of the Brazilian Schools of Apprentices and Artificers (Escolas de Aprendizes e Artífices - EAAs), focusing on the Parahyba School of Apprentices and Artificers (EAA-PB). These schools were created in the former Federal Republic of Brazil, in a context of public policies and promotion of professional educational projects (Decree-Law No. 7,566 of September 23, 1909). The Federal State had two objectives with this program: to respond to a national demand for skilled labor and to contain riots and rebellions of young people caused by poverty and unemployment. This federal government program allowed the creation of nineteen vocational schools, which would be strategically distributed throughout the country. In this context of industrialization and modernization of the Brazilian cities, the neocolonial style was one of the architectural languages used. Thus, this research is interested in the creation of these institutions in Brazil with a focus on EAA-PB. This study aims to document the incontestable value of this educational and industrial heritage through a social, political and architectural view and to study how North American and French vocational schools from the end of the 19th century and beginning of 20th century influenced the Schools of Apprentices and Artifices. For this research we compiled historical data, architectural surveys, iconographic and educational records. The intention of this work is to write a document to clarify the importance of EAAs in the development of vocational education at both national and international levels; RESUMO: A pesquisa destaca a importância patrimonial das Escolas de Aprendizes e Artífices (EAAs) brasileiras, tendo como foco a Escola de Aprendizes e Artífices da Parahyba (EAAPB). Essas escolas foram criadas na antiga República Federativa do Brasil, em um contexto de políticas públicas e promoção de projetos educativos de cunho profissionalizante (DecretoLei nº 7.566, de 23 de setembro de 1909). O Estado Federal possuía objetivos múltiplos com esse programa : responder a uma demande nacional de mão-de-obra qualificada e conter motins e rebeliões de jovens provocados pela probreza e pelo desemprego. Esse programa do governo federal permitiu a criação de dezenove escolas profissionalizantes, que seriam estrategicamente distribuidas em todo o país. Nesse contexto de industrialização e modernização das cidades brasileiras, o estilo neocolonial foi uma das linguagens arquitetônicas utilizadas. Assim, essa pesquisa se interessa pela criação dessas instituições no Brasil com foco na EAA-PB. Ela visa: documentar o valor inconteste desse patrimônio educativo e industrial através de um olhar social, político e arquitetônico; estudar como as escolas profissionalizantes estrangeiras (norte americanas e francesas) do final do século XIX e início so século XX influenciaram as Escolas de Aprendizes e Artífices. Para isso, compilamos dados históricos, levantamentos arquitetônicos, registros iconográficos e educacionais. O resultado desse trabalho teve como finalidade construir um documento que trousesse à luz a importância das EAAs no desenvolvimento do ensino profissionalizante à nível nacional e internacional.

Resumen
This study aims to analyze how industrial design as a profession and discipline has been presented to the public in Turkey. The object of the study is constituted by the popular home style magazines which increased rapidly in number through the dynamics of the post-1980 period. These publications have been inspected in the scope of the research and their in constructing and shaping public awareness about design culture has been the focus of the study. The main theme of the thesis is focused on the analysis of Turkish social values which changed after the 1980s and on how the magazines handled the subject of design, and the qualities which they highlighted in the presentation of the products. In addition, the roles which were ascribed to design and to the designers in terms of the newly calibrated consumption values, have also been discussed. The socio-political and economic transformations of the post-1980 period constitute the contextual framework of the thesis.

Yves Saint Laurent débute son métier dans la Haute couture, qu’il hisse au niveau d’un Art. Néanmoins, son style s’ouvre la voie du prêt-à-porter et s’impose à la rue. Sa double culture, né en Algérie avec toute sa carrière réalisée en France, l’amène à être ouvert sur le monde. Ainsi, il développe son concept de « voyage imaginaire » autour de la Chine, le Japon, la Russie, l’Amérique, l’Espagne, l’Inde, etc. A partir de sa culture originale et de ses influences dans le métier, telles que celles exercées par Christian Dior, Gabrielle Chanel ou Elsa Schiaparelli, il habille la femme d’une manière moderne, séduisante et d’une beauté contrastée : la féminité se teinte de masculin, classique dans la modernité, exotique dans le style occidental, dépouillée dans l’abondance, le chic casual. Très exotique, très abondant, très original mais aussi très moderne et attrayant. Tandis que tous ces éléments éclairent la façon d’Yves Saint Laurent, il nous vient une interrogation : quelle est la clé d’origine de son impact et de sa singularité ? A cette question, nous proposons l’hypothèse que la quintessence de son style réside dans la simplification, qui identifie parfaitement son œuvre et constitue la clé de toute sa création. Ensuite, nous déterminons la nature des liens entre cette simplification et son style, et le pourquoi de ces liens qui lui ont permis de maintenir sa place dans le domaine de la couture, malgré les évolutions industrielles
The French designer Yves Saint Laurent start as a fashion stylist Haute couture and he redound to his fashion in Art level. However, his fashion is achieved his way to ready to wear and overpower the street fashion. His double culture, born in Algeria but all his career was realized in France, was taken him more advanced over to the wide world and he develop it in a concept of « imaginary travel » : around China, Japan, Russia, U.S.A, Spain, India, and so forth. From his original culture and his great role models, such as Christian Dior, Gabrielle Chanel and Elsa Schiaparelli, Yves Saint Laurent put on women in modern, glamorous looks and compared beauty: femininity in masculinity, classic in modern, exotic in western style, minimalist in glamour, and, casual in chic. Very exotic,very abundant, very original, however, equally very modern fascinating. While all these elements were reflecting his style, several questions come to mind: what is the essence key of his impact and his originality. To define these questions, we frame a hypothesis that the essence of the style Yves Saint Laurent is simplication. This simplication is perfectly identified in his work and compose every key of his creation. We determine also to unit the nature of link between his simplication and his style. And then, this link to what is enable to maintain his position in fashion, in spite of change of fashion industry evolution
