Resumen
This study compared the effects of dynamic and static core training programs on core stability tests and Stork balance performance in soccer players. A Static (n = 14, 18,21±1,81) and Dynamic (n = 13, 17,31±0,63) training groups performed three 30 min sessions per week for eight weeks meanwhile attended routine soccer training sessions with a control group (n = 11, 17,73±1,27). Effects of different core training regimes were compared after eight weeks with two-factor variance analysis (condition X time) for related measures. Two experiment groups improved dynamic and static core stabilization test scores, while control group did not change. Core stabilization tests showed that the improvements of experiment groups affected by the movement specifity and Static group increased static test scores (plank 23,8% - back isometric 28,9% - leg raise 15,6%) while Dynamic group increased mostly the dynamic test scores (sit-up 21,2%, push up 16,2%). For Stork balance, both experiment groups improved the test scores between %18 and %67. While the Static group increased the duration of Stork test on both feet more than the Dynamic group, this difference was statistically significant only for non-dominant foot in intergroup analysis. The static structure of the Stork test may explain the significant improvement in static core group. Results indicate that the positive effect of core training on core stability may improve balance and static core training may be more effective for static balance tests.Extended English abstract is in the end of PDF (TURKISH) file.

36 small-scale model tests in soft clay were conducted to research the performances of pile groups under rigid caps. The parameters studied were the effect of pile length, pile spacing, and the number of piles in a group. The group piles consisted of 4, 6, and 9 circular model piles of 16mm in outer diameter (D), while four kinds of the pile spacing between pile centers 3; 4; 5; and 6 times of the diameter and three types of the embedded pile lengths: 20D; 25D; and 30D were used. For comparison, three single piles with the same diameter and length were also tested under the same condition. The experimental results were discussed based on the following 3 points of view: the pile group efficiency, the settlement ratio, load distribution per pile location in the group pile. All discussion suggested that the pile number and pile spacing in a pile group caused a remarkable interactional effect between piles, whereas the settlement ratios are significantly affected by the pile length. Besides, each pile in the group of 6D pile spacing behaved more individually.

Resumen
A simple, efficient method is presented for the analysis of large pile groups subjected to vertical loads, horizontal loads, and moments acting either statically or dynamically with low frequencies. The soil profile and the arrangement of the piles may be arbitrary but the solution is particularly efficient for groups with double symmetry or axisymmetry. The group is analyzed directly, avoiding the use of interaction factors, but the interaction factors are also presented. The piles can be of any type, i.e., floating, end-bearing, socketed, or with a pedestal.

Resumen
The aim of the present study was to investigate the immediate effects of static and proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) stretching on the flexibility of hip adductors in female ballet dancers. Forty-five subjects (age: 28.5 ± 8.0 years; minimum two years of ballet training) were randomly assigned to three groups: PNF (contract-release technique), Static, and Control. Subjects in the PNF and Static groups performed four sets of 30 second stretching with an interval of 30 seconds between sets. The control group stayed at rest for the same time spent by the PNF and Static groups during the stretching sessions. Maximal range of motion was measured before and immediately after the experimental and control protocols in all groups. The results indicated significant differences between pre- and post-stretching flexibility in both PNF and Static groups (p < 0.0001; effect size = 0.24 and 0.39, respectively), whereas no change was identified in the Control group (p = 0.265). However, no differences in post-exercise flexibility were found between PNF and Static groups (p = 0.235). It is concluded that static and PNF stretching methods provoked similar post-exercise acute effects on the maximal range of motion of hip adductors in highly flexible female ballet dancers.

Resumen
Proximal humeral shaft fractures are commonly treated with long straight plates or intramedullary nails. Helical plates might overcome the downsides of these techniques as they are able to avoid the radial nerve distally. The aim of this study was to investigate in an artificial bone model: (1) the biomechanical competence of different plate designs and (2) to compare them against the alternative treatment option of intramedullary nails.Twenty-four artificial humeri were assigned in 4 groups and instrumented as follows: group1 (straight 10-hole-PHILOS), group2 (MULTILOCK-nail), group3 (45°-helical-PHILOS) and group4 (90°-helical-PHILOS). An unstable proximal humeral shaft fracture was simulated. Specimens were tested under quasi-static loading in axial compression, internal/external rotation and bending in 4 directions monitored by optical motion tracking.Axial displacement (mm) was significantly lower in group2 (0.1±0.1) compared to all other groups (1: 3.7±0.6; 3: 3.8±0.8; 4: 3.5±0.4), p<0.001. Varus stiffness in group2 (0.8±0.1) was significantly higher compared to groups1+3, p≤0.013 (1: 0.7±0.1; 3: 0.7±0.1; 4: 0.8±0.1). Varus bending (°) was significantly lower in group2 compared to all other groups (p<0.001) and group4 to group1, p=0.022. Flexion stiffness in group1 was significantly higher compared to groups2+4 (p≤0,03) and group4 to group1, p≤0,029 (1: 0.8±0.1; 2: 0.7±0.1; 3: 0.7±0.1; 4: 0.6±0.1). Flexion bending (°) in group4 was higher compared to all other groups (p≤0.024) and lower in group2 compared to groups1+4, p≤0.024. Torsional stiffness remained non significantly different, p≥0.086. Torsional deformation in group2 was significantly higher compared to all other groups, p≤0.017. Shear displacement remained non significantly different, p≥0.112.From a biomechanical perspective, helical plating with 45° and 90° may be considered as a valid alternative fixation technique to standard straight plating of proximal third humeral fractures. Intramedullary nails demonstrated higher axial and bending stiffness as well as lower fracture gap movements during axial loading compared to all plate designs. However, despite similar torsional stiffness they were associated with higher torsional movements during internal/external rotation as compared to all investigated plate designs.

Resumen
The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of static fatigue of trunk extensor and abdominal muscle groups on static and dynamic balance components. The study sample consisted of 40 healthy volunteers. Lumbar erector spinae, multifidus, and latissimus dorsi, external oblique, rectus abdominis and internal oblique muscles were measured on the dominant side. Dynamic and static balances were measured before and after the test protocol following EMG analysis. Pre-test and post-test static and dynamic balance scores showed that there was a statistically significant difference in OE (open-eyed) static balance values between the experimental and control groups (p<.01). There was a statistically significant difference in ATE (Average track error) scores between male and female participants (p<.05). There was a statistically significant difference in mean coordinated fatigue values of agonist and antagonist muscle groups in the Biering-Sørensen position between male and female participants (p<.05). Deterioration was observed in participants’ OE static balance, indicating that OE static balance deterioration occurred again in the OE position. There was a statistically significant difference in co-fatigue values of abdominal muscles between the two groups.

Resumen
AbstractForty-eight Large White x Landrace multiparous sows were mixed into twelve groups of four animals after their piglets were weaned. These groups were defined as static, with no animals being added to or removed from the groups after their formation. Aggressive and submissive behaviours were recorded continuously for 9 h after the sows were mixed, and the sows were assigned high or low social status on the basis of their relative aggressiveness and success in aggressive interactions. After five weeks, each static group was mixed into a dynamic group of 40 ±2 sows for an 11-week period. Three static groups (ie 12 animals) at a time were added to the dynamic group at three-week intervals; the same number of animals was removed at these time-points in order to maintain the group number at 40 ± 2. Injury levels increased significantly with the transition from static groups to the dynamic group (P < 0.001). Sows with low social status had lower bodyweights (P < 0.001) and higher injury levels one week after mixing into static and dynamic groups (P < 0.01). Social status did not significantly affect salivary Cortisol levels. Sows with low social status were positioned lower in the feed order, determined using an electronic feeder (P < 0.001), and tended to be displaced from the feeder queue more often (P < 0.1) in the dynamic group. Sows with low social status were also displaced from the drinker more often than highranking sows in the dynamic group (P < 0.01). This may have led to the greater frequency of drinking behaviour shown by low-ranking sows (P < 0.05). Sows with low social status were observed less often in the kennel areas than were the high-ranking sows in the dynamic group (P < 0.05), suggesting that they were denied access to the prime lying areas. The results suggest that the welfare of sows is negatively affected by low social status in both small static and large dynamic groups.

Resumen
This thesis is a theoretical study, using both finite element and boundary element methods, of the behaviour of single-piles and pile groups under vertical and lateral loading. It offers an improved understanding of the soil-structure interaction that occurs in pile groups, particularly closely spaced piles subjected to lateral loads. The potential of a two- dimensional idealisation of what is a three-dimensional problem is demonstrated by achieving real insight into the complex nature of pile-soil and pile-soil-pile interaction in pile groups. A new load transfer mechanism is presented for a rigid, axially loaded vertical pile. From this an improvement is then derived to the analytical solution for pile head settlement given by Randolph and Wroth (1978). The improved mechanism has the further merit that it can be applied also to solutions for flexible piles and pile groups. The improved analytical solution is further adapted in the development of two correcting layers specifically for vertically loaded piles to model infinite boundaries in the finite element model. The correcting layers help in establishing superiority of the finite element method over the boundary element method. To model pile-soil interaction, a purely cohesive interface element is developed and then validated by performing various two-dimensional test problems, including stability analysis of flat surface footings. Footing-soil interface tension is successfully modelled in this way - an outcome that entails a significant modification to the Hansen (1970) bearing capacity solution. Stability analysis is also carried out of conical footings using a three-dimensional finite element model: the results help to explain the applicability of the existing bearing capacity theories to conical footings. The ultimate lateral soil reaction is determined and various pile loading stages are investigated through parametric studies. Study of the stage immediately following pile installation (i.e. the consolidation stage) highlights the need to develop an effective stress analysis for laterally loaded piles. Pile-soil interaction is studied using the cohesive interface element presented earlier, which proves to be quite successful in smoothing out the stress discontinuities around the pile. A new material model for frictional soils is presented, and validated by using it to model an extension test: it captures well post-peak behaviour and takes care of the effects of dilation on the response of laterally loaded piles. Finally, mechanisms of interaction in closely spaced pile groups are studied. Simple analytical expressions are derived which quantify the effects of interaction. A new method of analysis is presented for single-piles and pile groups which offers a considerable degree of reliability without having to do either impossibly expensive full scale field tests or prohibitively expensive full three-dimensional analysis using the currently available computers.

Recent studies have set the problem of base station cooperation within the framework of stochastic geometry, where the irregularity of the base station positions can be considered. Some authors study the case when the user can dynamically choose the set of stations cooperating for its service. This assumption is not realistic. Instead, other authors propose to form the groups in a static way. To be optimal, these static methodologies should consider proximity between the base stations to form the groups. We propose a grouping method based on the nearest neighbor model. We allow the formation of singles and pairs of nodes. We derive structural characteristics for these two processes and analyse the resulting interference fields. When the node positions are modelled by a Poisson point process, the processes of singles and pairs are not Poisson, complicating the corresponding analysis. The performance of the original model, however, can be approximated by the superposition of two Poisson point processes. Numerical evaluation shows coverage gains from different signal cooperation that can reach up to 15%, compared with the standard noncooperative case. For the cooperation to be meaningful, each station in a group should have sufficient resources to share, besides being close to each other. Thus, we redefine the nearest neighbors with a metric. The results of our analysis illustrate that cooperation gains strongly depend on the distribution of the available resources over the network

Resumen
The Western Australian School of Mines (WASM) developed a large area static test facility to enable the evaluation of three forms of surface support; namely, mesh, shotcrete and membranes. The purpose of this thesis is to document the test conditions and procedures under which these tests were conducted and to document the outcomes from testing.A review of previous mesh testing established that the most common method used for the evaluation of mesh types was two-dimensional linear elastic analyses, often using catenary principles. These analysis techniques have been used to estimate the tension in the wires of mesh and the strength characteristics of the mesh. These methods assume that forces are only transferred along directly loaded wires and that failure of the mesh is only related to the tensile strength of the wire. The force – displacement response from fully restrained mesh tests conducted at the WASM test facility have been characterised into distinct phases, clearly demonstrating the non-linear behaviour of mesh. The initial force response to displacement is slow; however the force response increases dramatically with further displacement. This behaviour has been shown to follow a cubic relationship. The force – displacement results have also been used to develop load transfer concepts for both weld mesh and chain link mesh. These concepts suggest that forces are transferred away from the directly loaded wires through adjoining wires, distributing forces over a greater area of the mesh. The force capacity of the weld mesh is not only dependent on the tensile strength of the wire but also the quality of the welding process. Likewise, the force capacity of chain link mesh is not only dependent on the tensile strength of the wire but also diamond configuration which allows load to be shared across a greater area of mesh.Several other test conditions were evaluated as part of the test program, including mesh sheet overlaps and wire orientation. The results have demonstrated that the boundary conditions and mesh orientation alters the force – displacement response of mesh. Most current shotcrete testing techniques focus on quality assurance and quality control. Shotcrete support mechanism and failure mechanisms are complex and not well understood. The WASM punch test method was developed to evaluate shotcrete using realistic shotcrete failure mechanisms such as shear and flexural failure and adhesion loss. The behaviour of shotcrete is characterised by an initial stiff reaction followed by rupture of the cement matrix. Rupture generally occurs at displacements of less than 5mm. The rupture force of fibre reinforced shotcrete is dependent only on the cement content of the shotcrete mix and the thickness of the layer, and not on the fibre type. The post rupture reaction of shotcrete is dependent on the reinforcing material; namely fibres or mesh. Mesh reinforced shotcrete had much greater force and displacement capacity compared with fibre reinforced shotcrete.Membranes have two theoretical support models (Norcroft, 2006); namely, the membrane support model and the beam support model. A total of 6 tests were undertaken to investigate the behaviour of a particular membrane product under the two theoretical support models. These tests were aimed at determining a suitable test method that could determine the capacity of the membrane and the behaviour of the membrane under realistic loading conditions. The results from both test programs demonstrated that the membrane has limited force and displacement capacity and cannot be compared with conventional mesh and shotcrete as suggested in the product data sheet. The failure mechanism was shear failure with minimal adhesion loss observed. The development of the WASM test facility has enabled the evaluation and comparison of various surface support elements. The results of this testing have provide a valuable insight into the performance of each of the individual products.

Due to the series of artworks that I realized between 2005 and 2012 between Paris and Shanghai, this thesis proposes to study the group portrait from various angles, it is all about fictitious portraits whose main aim is the place that may hold the viewer facing a variety of social groups, in which represented people remain staring at the spectator in a silent way. These works invite us to reflect on and permeability between the boundaries of art, ethnology and social sciences, on the question of identity gender, intercultural interaction and methods of communication beyond the language of words. However I tried to develop a painting that conveys the possibility of an exchange between the viewer and the represented group of people. A painting in which the model becomes the beholder, and vice versa. Michael Fried's book entitled Absorption and Theatricality: Painting and Beholder served as a support for me in my initial observation of theatricality in painting. Living in Shanghai for the past three years, I have been most inspired by Asian faces. I’ve observed for a long time the functioning of the Chinese society with it’s own social codes which are not limited only to language barriers but can be expressions beyond words. A society that is organized in groups according to various functions and activities where the wearing of the uniform is very common and it runs into various social fronts. We, as humans, strive towards an ideal, a possible success, a utopia where men and women compete for professions, and the role of women have become more visible in society which has been patriarchal for decades. The image of the androgynous appears through a crowd that moves with heavy dancing steps, especially examining the choreography of Jing Xing, this Chinese dancer who was a man originally, and then decided to transform himself into a woman. It is the transition from male to female and vice versa in a society in mutation. This expression generates two kinds of confusion: the ambiguity of gender, where women are increasingly present in a highly competitive professional field on the one hand, and the ambiguity of language and communication for a foreigner in this society. It is the barrier of social codes and the omnipresence of "network" (Guanxi) as an essential tool to penetrate this society. [...]

This dissertation examines the cohesion of Latino groups in American society. It analyses the influence of intra-community relations on the integration of Latinos in American society and deconstructs the representation of Latino communities perceived as a monolithic group allowing to determine to what extent these relationships lead to different assimilation paths. In particular, it shows the differential impact of the relationships between different Latino communities on their integration into American society and investigates the influence of the context of reception on the socio-economic integration of different Latino groups, policies and practices, and, more generally, their political clout. The choice of cities as diverse as Miami, Los Angeles and Boston highlights the importance of the urban context on the formation of relationships between the different Latino groups, and its influence on their integration into American society, as measured by the group strategies that Latinos adopt and their political participation. This analysis is crucial to the understanding of the complex interactions between Latino groups whose relationships are a major challenge, as they allow to anticipate the future of ethnic relations in the United States. This perspective opens to a broader sociological context which may help better comprehend the political and economic issues that the United States will confront in topics such as integration, immigration and representation in the coming decades

Shadlou, Masoud. "Contribution to the static and dynamic response of piles in liquefiable ground". Thesis, University of Bristol, 2016. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.702146.

Resumen
New and existing superstructures (such as bridges and buildings) supported on pile foundations and located in sites susceptible to liquefaction and lateral spreading are required to be assessed or designed to withstand the actions of extreme loads. As a result, the performance of the piles, foundations, and also superstructures must be estimated/predicted by sufficient accuracy using dynamic analysis. Usually a large number of analyses are required for assessing the performance of a dynamic system and obtaining the analytical fragility functions, as an example. Simplified-conventional solutions may not be accurate enough to address the complex dynamic phenomena involved in soil-pile interaction in liquefiable soil. In order to achieve this, it is necessary to simulate soil-pile system using a reliable method supported by realistic soil constitutive relations surrounding the pile. Therefore, a hypo-elastic bounding surface model has been developed in the framework of the macro-element to underpin and facilitate the concerns of 'performance-based design' and 'risk assessments'. In this case, it is expected that the macro-element approach is able to feedback quick response with high accuracy comparable to sophisticated and complex Finite Element (FE) models. Following the concept of hypo-elasticity, elastic stiffness of the macro-element should be estimated accurately. In this case, an elasto-dynamic solution has been developed for analyzing the soil-pile system under the pile-head and the kinematic earthquake loading. This method is also generalized for different types of pile foundations ranging from the short piles/caissons to long/flexible piles. Validations and verifications of the macro-element approach show its high accuracy on simulating the field test and dynamic centrifuge. It is concluded to move step forward by utilizing the macro-element for soil-pile system in liquefiable ground in order to produce precise results. Finally, a simple method for calculating the dynamic bending moment in pre-liquefaction phase (cyclic mobility phase) is proposed for the geotechnical desk study using the elastic continuum solution.

Resumen
AbstractA quantum circuit is often executed on the initial state where each qubit is in the zero state. Therefore, we propose to perform a symbolic execution of the circuit. Our approach simulates groups of entangled qubits exactly up to a given complexity. Here, the complexity corresponds to the number of basis states expressing the quantum state of one entanglement group. By doing that, the groups need neither be determined upfront nor be bound by the number of involved qubits. Still, we ensure that the simulation runs in polynomial time - opposed to exponential time as required for the simulation of the entire circuit. The information made available at gates is exploited to remove superfluous controls and gates. We implemented our approach in the tool quantum constant propagation (QCP) and evaluated it on the circuits in the benchmark suite MQTBench. By applying our tool, only the work that cannot be carried out efficiently on a classical computer is left for the quantum computer, hence exploiting the strengths of both worlds.

Resumen
AbstractCollaborative embedded systems form groups in which individual systems collaborate to achieve an overall goal. To this end, new systems may join a group and participating systems can leave the group. Classical techniques for the formal modeling and analysis of distributed systems, however, are mainly based on a static notion of systems and thus are often not well suited for the modeling and analysis of collaborative embedded systems. In this chapter, we propose an alternative approach that allows for the verification of dynamically evolving systems and we demonstrate it in terms of a running example: a simple version of an adaptable and flexible factory.

Resumen
AbstractViewing the historical development of Chinese Christianity, this chapter argues that, far from being a static concept, nationalism has constantly been constructed and interpreted. Subject to different political and economic contexts, the patriotism of Chinese Christians has taken various forms. From the early twentieth century until the 1950s, their nationalism was primarily anti-imperialist. Following the Communist Party’s assumption of power in 1949, Chinese Protestants split into two groups based on theological differences and distinct understandings of patriotism. Since China’s ‘opening up’ in 1979, the country has experienced an unexpected Christian revival and a corresponding rise in nationalism. Since the 1990s, a new wave of nationalist sentiment has emerged, one that has fashioned Muslims as a new Other.

Resumen
AbstractThis chapter studies equity in reading performance in PISA 2000–2018 in three Nordic countries: Denmark, Sweden and Norway. Using regression analyses, the study investigates how the reading performance trend for groups of students with different genders, home backgrounds and minorities has developed. The study is contextualised through an up-to-date description of reading comprehension instruction in the countries. In addition to trend analyses of general reading performance, the study examines if the differences between groups of students are consistent across different text formats in the digital version of the PISA test, distinguishing between static text types (e.g., articles, letters, stories) and dynamic text types (e.g., websites, forums and e-mails, etc.). We find a consistently high reading literacy performance in all Scandinavian countries compared with international development. There are large gender differences in the average reading performance in all three countries, disfavouring boys, especially low-performing boys from low SES home backgrounds. We find a huge and stable gap between minority and majority students’ reading achievement, even when corrected for SES. Taking these findings into account, we assert that there is no basis for concluding that the school systems give more equitable learning conditions for groups of students now than when the PISA assessments started. However, it appears that the new online text formats in PISA 2018 might shrink the differences between student groups. Based on our findings, we argue that it is highly doubtful if one can still speak of a Nordic model of education, both as an idea of equity and fairness and as a model that is united across the Nordic countries.

Resumen
AbstractThe need to characterise in-service damage in composite structures is increasingly becoming important as composites find higher utilisation in wind turbines, aerospace, automotive, marine, among others. This paper investigates the feasibility of simplifying the conventional acousto-ultrasonic technique set-up for quick and economic one-sided in-service inspection of composite structures. Acousto-ultrasonic technique refers to the approach of using ultrasonic transducer for local excitation while sensing the material response with an acoustic emission sensor. However, this involves transducers with several auxiliaries. The approach proposed herewith, referred to as vibro-acoustic testing, involves a low level of vibration impact excitation and acoustic emission sensing for damage characterisation. To test the robustness of this approach, first, a quasi-static test was carried out to impute low-velocity impact damage on three groups of test samples with different ply stacking sequences. Next, the vibro-acoustic testing was performed on all test samples with the acoustic emission response for the samples acquired. Using the acoustic emission test sample response for all groups, the stress wave factor was determined using the peak voltage stress wave factor method. The stress wave factor results showed an inverse correlation between the level of impact damage and stress wave factor across all the test sample groups. This corresponds with what has been reported in literature for acousto-ultrasonic technique; thus demonstrating the robustness of the proposed vibro-acoustic set-up. Structural health monitoring, impact damage, acousto-ultrasonic testing, non-destructive testing.

Resumen
Reconfigurable mechanisms are a group of mechanisms that can change their topology or mobility while in operation. This property can add flexibility of the use of the mechanisms in constrained environments. Some situations require these mechanisms to be statically balanced. One example is a statically balanced lower-limb rehabilitation device, allowing patients who suffer from lower-limb paralysis to exercise without the need for a therapist to guide them. This mechanism by Tseng et al. [1] is one of the very few examples of a statically balanced reconfigurable mechanism. From literature it is known that there is no general way to statically balance these mechanisms. This paper aims to create an overview of the methods that can be applied by making a classification of reconfigurable mechanisms based on the intrinsic properties, then reviewing each group of this overview to find a generalised static balancing method. Only two mechanism groups show high compatibility with static balancing. One of these groups could be balanced using a single spring. The other shows the property that if one operation mode is balanced, no additional springs are needed for the other mode. Applying these techniques could reduce the overall complexity of the mechanism.

Push-pull molecules have been extensively studied for their properties in the field of quadratic nonlinear optics. Such molecules consist of electron-donor and electron acceptor substituents connected via a conjugation path. Also, they can display huge static quadratic hyperpolarizabilities β(0) related to the occurence of the ICT transition between the ground and first-excited states [1].

Resumen
Starting its creation, static vector word models was able solving the task of finding word analogies. This task finds a vector of parallel transition that reflects a word into another one changing a property of a former word. Since the task of finding word analogies lacks of precision, researchers are trying to investigate peculiarities of vector models and corresponding semantic spaces. In this paper, we introduce a new method of visual interpretation of such models. Our method uses thematic word collections, separation of semantic space into word groups using LSA method, and visualization of results using heatmap. We found out that vector semantic space can be interpreted not only on a local level, but on the global one as well. In the former case, the resulting grouping of words depends on the text collection used for the model training. Our method is applicable for finding several top layers because of exponential decreasing of the size of a group.

Resumen
Armed groups tax. Journalistic accounts often include a tone of surprise about this fact, while policy reports tend to strike a tone of alarm, highlighting the link between armed group taxation and ongoing conflict. Policymakers often focus on targeting the mechanisms of armed group taxation as part of their conflict strategy, often described as ‘following the money’. We argue that what is instead needed is a deeper understanding of the nuanced realities of armed group taxation, the motivations behind it, and the implications it has for an armed group’s relationship with civilian and diaspora populations, as well as the broader international community. This paper builds on two distinct literatures, on armed groups and on taxation, to provide the first systematic exploration into the motivation of armed group taxation. Based on a review of the diverse practices of how armed groups tax, we highlight that a full account of their motivation needs to go beyond revenue collection, and engage with key themes around legitimacy, population control, institution building, and the performance of public authority. We problematise common approaches towards armed group taxation and state-building, and outline key questions of a new research agenda.

Resumen
While Islamist extremist groups had been present and involved in criminal activities in northern Mali since the early 2000s, they began to gain ground in the Sahel around 2012, when small, local insurgencies connected with al-Qaeda began launching attacks in northern Mali. Now, both Benin and Côte d’Ivoire find themselves periodically targeted by these groups. The role of community based armed groups (CBAGs) within this evolving threat is extremely important. The relationship between the state, local communities, and CBAGs is therefore crucial for coastal West African states to manage effectively. This is not least because CBAGs’ local knowledge and connections make them, if mobilized well, potentially valuable resources in combatting the proliferation of jihadist violence in coastal states. This Policy Note seeks to address the challenges and opportunities posed by the role of CBAGs in combatting the expansion of Islamist extremism in Côte D’Ivoire and Benin.

Resumen
The article focuses on the «Intellectual Dark Web», an informal group of scholars, publicists, and activists who openly opposed the identity politics, political correctness, and the dominance of leftist ideas in American intellectual life. The author examines the reasons for the emergence of this group, names the main representatives and finds that the existence of «dark intellectuals» is the evidence of important problems in US public discourse. The term «Intellectual Dark Web» was coined by businessman Eric Weinstein to describe those who openly opposed restrictions on freedom of speech by the state or certain groups on the grounds of avoiding discrimination and hate speech. Extensive discussion of the phenomenon of «dark intellectuals» began after the publication of Barry Weiss’s article «Meet the renegades from the «Intellectual Dark Web» in The New York Times in 2018. The author writes of «dark intellectuals» as an informal group of «rebellious thinkers, academic apostates, and media personalities» who felt isolated from traditional channels of communication and therefore built their own alternative platforms to discuss awkward topics that were often taboo in the mainstream media. One of the most prominent members of this group, Canadian clinical psychologist Jordan Peterson, publicly opposed the C-16 Act in September 2016, which the Canadian government aimed to implement initiatives that would prevent discrimination against transgender people. Peterson called it a direct interference with the right to freedom of speech and the introduction of state censorship. Other members of the group had a similar experience that their views were not accepted in the scientific or media sphere. The existence of the «Intellectual Dark Web» indicates the problem of political polarization and the reduction of the ability to find a compromise in the American intellectual sphere and in American society as a whole.

Resumen
This report summarizes findings from three surveys (n=76) and focus groups (n=30) administered as part of the Modeling Zoos and Aquariums as Inclusive Communities of Science (MoZAICS) for Autistic Individuals project. This study was designed to look across the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) field to understand what inclusive practices zoos and aquariums are currently using to support autistic individuals across the full zoo/aquarium experience (e.g., general visit, programs, events, design of learning experiences, volunteering, internships and employment). Surveys asked zoo and aquarium employees to respond to open- and closed-ended prompts about their organization’s current practices for inclusion of autistic individuals across four areas: the general visit; spaces for exhibiting, learning or working; human resources; and leadership. Additional questions asked about each site’s partnerships with autism-related communities (e.g., autistic self-advocates, community-based advocacy groups). Focus group discussions more deeply probed the specific practices used by different zoo/aquarium facilities as well as how these practices are informed and evaluated.

Stone, N. J. Table of Nuclear Electric Quadrupole Moments. IAEA Nuclear Data Section, octubre de 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.61092/iaea.a6te-dg7q.

Texto completo
Resumen
This Table is a compilation of experimental measurements of static electric quadrupole moments of ground states and excited states of atomic nuclei throughout the periodic table. To aid identification of the states, their excitation energy, half-life, spin and parity are given, along with a brief indication of the method and any reference standard used in the particular measurement. Experimental data from all quadrupole moment measurements actually provide a value of the product of the moment and the electric field gradient (EFG) acting at the nucleus. Knowledge of the EFG is thus necessary to extract the quadrupole moment. A single recommended value of the moment is given for each state, based, for each element, wherever possible, upon a standard reference moment for a nuclear state of that element studied in a situation in which the electric field gradient has been well calculated. For several elements one or more subsidiary reference EFG/moment references are required and their use is specified. The literature search covers the period to April 2021.

Magyar, Luke y Jonathan Röders. Implications of Armed Group Hierarchies for Formerly Armed Actor Reintegration. Trust After Betrayal Research Brief Series, abril de 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.59498/18037.

Texto completo
Resumen
This Research Brief explores the implications of armed group hierarchies on the reintegration pathways of formerly armed actors (FAAs). It highlights how ranks within armed groups significantly shape key determinants of succesful reintegration, such as skill sets, financial security, traumatic exposure, and access to networks post-demobilisation and how reintegration programmes often entrench disparities between higher and lower ranking FAAs. By comparing dynamics within state-sponsored militaries and across centralised and decentralised non-state armed groups (NSAGs), the Research Brief advocates for nuanced strategies that recognise the complex interplay of network dynamics and hierarchies on FAA positionalities after demobilisation to foster more equitable reintegration outcomes for FAAs. Additionally, this brief includes a quadrant graphic offering an assessment of different FAA reintegration scenarios based on hierarchies, centralisation, and reintegration programming strength.
