Resumen
While Missiological hermeneutics have pointed to the missio Dei concept as key to the entire Biblical narrative, these readings have described God’s mission activity as commencing after the entrance of sin, rather than at the beginning of the Bible. This article argues that a mission hermeneutic ought to begin with the Bible’s opening chapters, where humanity’s vocation in the narratives of Genesis 1 and 2 need not be treated as a separate “creation mandate,” but as involvement in the missio Dei. Iranaeus’ theology provides a precedent for thinking that God’s perfecting work was still at an early stage when sin entered creation; and G. K. Beale’s reading of Eden as a garden sanctuary to be expanded gives at least one exegetical avenue for seeing the creation narratives as continuous with the mission entrusted to Abraham’s descendants. Missio Dei participation, then, is inherent to humanity, and sin’s origins can be framed as a refusal to embrace it.

Resumen
Robotic space exploration to the outer solar system is difficult and expensive and the space science community works inventively and collaboratively to maximize the scientific return of missions. A mission to either of our solar system Ice Giants, Uranus and Neptune, will provide numerous opportunities to address high-level science objectives relevant to multiple disciplines and deliberate cross-disciplinary mission planning should ideally be woven in from the start. In this review, we recount past successes as well as (NASA-focused) challenges in performing cross-disciplinary science from robotic space exploration missions and detail the opportunities for broad-reaching science objectives from potential future missions to the Ice Giants. This article is part of a discussion meeting issue ‘Future exploration of ice giant systems’.

Resumen
In recent years there has been an increasing interest in the use of autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) for ocean interventions. Typical operations imply the pre-loading of a pre-generated mission plan into the AUV before being launched. Once deployed, the AUV waits for a start command to begin the execution of the plan. An onboard mission manager is responsible for handling the events that may prevent the AUV from following the plan. This approach considers the management of the mission only at the vehicle level. However, the use of a mission-level manager in coordination with the onboard mission manager could improve the handling of exogenous events that cannot be handled fully at the vehicle level. Moreover, the use of vehicle virtualization by the mission-level manager can ease the use of older AUVs. In this paper, we propose a new mission-level manager to be run at a control station. The proposed mission manager, named Missions and Task Register and Reporter (MTRR), follows a decentralized hierarchical control pattern for self-adaptive systems, and provides a basic virtualization in regard to the AUV’s planning capabilities. The MTRR has been validated as part of the SWARMs European project. During the final trials we assessed its effectiveness and measured its performance. As a result, we have identified a strong correlation between the length of mission plan and the time required to start a mission ( ρ s = 0.79 , n = 45 , p 0.001 ). We have also identified a possible bottleneck when accessing the repositories for storing the information from the mission. Specifically, the average time for storing the received state vectors in the relational database represented only 18.50% of the average time required for doing so in the semantic repository.

Resumen
Elizabeth Kryder-Reid examines the origins of California's mission gardens and explores their reception and their contribution to cultural memory. The evidence presented in "Perennially New": Santa Barbara and the Origins of the California Mission Garden shows that the iconic image of the mission garden was created a century after the founding of the missions in the late eighteenth century, and two decades before the start of the Mission Revival architectural style. The locus of their origin was Mission Santa Barbara, where in 1872 a Franciscan named Father Romo, newly arrived from a posting in Jerusalem, planted a courtyard garden reminiscent of the landscapes that he had seen during his travels around the Mediterranean. This invented garden fostered a robust visual culture and rich ideological narratives, and it played a formative role in the broader cultural reception of Mission Revival garden design and of California history in general. These discoveries have significance for the preservation and interpretation of these heritage sites.

The current success rate of CubeSat missions, particularly for first-time developers, may discourage non-profit organizations to start new projects. CubeSat development teams may not be able to dedicate the resources that are necessary to maintain Quality Assurance as it is performed for the reliable conventional satellite projects. This paper discusses the structured life-cycle of a CubeSat project, using as a reference the authors’ recent experience of developing and operating a 2U CubeSat, called qbee50-LTU-OC, as part of the QB50 mission. This paper also provides a critique of some of the current poor practices and methodologies while carrying out CubeSat projects.

Resumen
Bevans’ concept of transforming discipleship foregrounds a fundamental symbiotic relationship between discipleship and mission. The interplay between both practices is central to the wider debate of contemporary church social engagement under missio Dei. He explains that the notion of baptism and theosis embedded in the idea of transforming discipleship points to a concrete transformation of the human experience and condition. This forms the premise of this article in exploring how Christian practices of discipleship and mission articulate a process of human becoming and participation in the life and mission of God that centres on a critical engagement with lived reality. This understanding offers a consistent framework of fostering a mutual relationship between local churches and communities in the poorer urban context, which often face the twin challenge of church and social decline. It questions a simplistic binary correlation between the practices of discipleship and mission. Such correlation often leads to a seeming dichotomy in Christian practices, with mission being portrayed as a means of achieving a quantitative outcome and discipleship a qualitative one. Instead, the focus of this article is to elucidate how discipleship and mission are interwoven, that both start with God and are integral to the actualisation of God’s salvific plan in the world.

Abstract We present High-Level Science Products (HLSPs) containing light curves from MIT's Quick-Look Pipeline (QLP) from the second year of Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS’) first Extended Mission (Sectors 40–55; 2021 July–2022 September). In total, 12.2 million per-sector light curves for 5.7 million unique stars were extracted from 10 minutes cadence Full-Frame Images (FFIs) and are made available to the community. As in previous deliveries, QLP HLSPs include both raw and detrended flux time series for all observed stars brighter than TESS magnitude T = 13.5 mag. Starting in Sector 41, QLP also produces light curves for select fainter M dwarfs. QLP has provided the community with one of the largest sources of FFI-extracted light curves to date since the start of the TESS mission.

Resumen
Detection of intrinsic solar variability on the total flux level was made using results from the first Active Radiometer Irradiance Monitor (ACRIM) experiment, launched on the Solar Maximum Mission (SMM) in early 1980. ACRIM I, specifically designed to start the high precision total solar irradiance database as part of the U.S. Climate Research Program, produced high precision results throughout the 9.75 years of the Solar Maximum Mission. The second ACRIM experiment was flown aboard the Space Shuttle as part of the NASA/ESA Spacelab 1 Mission in late 1983. Its primary function has been to provide a comparison with ACRIM I that could be used to relate its observations with future satellite solar monitors, should they and ACRIM I fail to overlap in time. The second ACRIM satellite solar monitoring experiment (ACRIM II) has provided high precision total solar irradiance observations since its launch as part of the Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS) mission in late 1991 and continues at present. The shuttle ACRIM instrumentation has been flown on the ATLAS 1 and 2 missions in 1992 and 1993, providing comparisons with the UARS/ACRIM II.

Resumen
We track the strategic choices of Rhode Island Coalition against Domestic Violence (RICADV), a statewide collective actor working in one media market to expand opportunities to promote its mission. We reconstruct an organizational life history describing how RICADV built its communications capacity and deepened internal and external relations, thereby increasing media standing with Rhode Island journalists. To measure growth in media standing quantitatively, we analyze print coverage of three comparable clusters of domestic violence murders occurring in Rhode Island between 1996 and 2002. Over this interval, RICADV rose from invisibility to become Rhode Island reporters' foremost source for background information on domestic-violence murders. Also, the use of language identifying these murders as domestic violence increased sixteen-fold. Stressing dialogic and relational approaches, we conclude that despite restricted access to corporatized media markets, intentional collective actors can negotiate and expand media opportunities by strategically selecting mission-relevant media projects that match their existing resources and networks.

Gutiérrez, Soto Juan. "Non-radial pulsations in be stars. Preparation of the corot space mission". Doctoral thesis, Universitat de València, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/9886.

Texto completo
Resumen
The general objective of the present work is to contribute to the knowledge of the physics of Be Stars. In particular, we are interested in studying and characterizing their pulsational properties. A very suitable tool to reach this goal is the study and analysis of photometric time series with the maximum time baseline, density and photometric accuracy. The space mission COROT scheduled to be launched in December 2006, will provide ultra high precision, relative stellar photometry for very long continuous observing runs. Up to ten stars will be observed in the seismology fields with a photometric accuracy of a few 10-4 and color information during 150 days. The observations of Be stars with COROT will provide photometric time series with unprecedented quality. Their analysis will allow us to qualitatively improve our knowledge and understanding of the pulsational characteristics of Be stars. In consequence, we have started a research project aimed at observing Be stars both in the seismology and exoplanet fields of COROT.In this thesis we present the first step of this project, which is the preparation and study of the sample of Be stars that will be observed by COROT. We have performed photometric analysis of all Be stars located in the seismology fields (Chap. 2). Special emphasis has been given to two stars (NW Ser and V1446 Aql) in which we have detected multiperiodic variability and these variations have been modeled in terms of stellar pulsations (Chap. 3). We have also performed an in-depth spectroscopic study of NW Ser and identified the non-radial pulsating modes taking into account the rotational effects (Chap. 4). A technique to search for faint Be stars based on CCD photometry has been developed and is presented in Chap. 5. We also present a list of faint Be stars located in the exoplanet fields of COROT detected with this technique and which we propose as targets for COROT. In addition, we have proven that our period-analysis techniques are suitable to detect multiperiodicity in large temporal baseline data. In particular, we have detected non-radial pulsations in some Be stars in the low-metallicity galaxy Small Magellanic Clouds (Chap. 6). The current theoretical models do not predict the presence of pulsational instabilities in such low-metallicity environment, and therefore, our results point towards the necessity of new and improved models.

Resumen
This fictional novella takes place during the narrator Smoot's two-year mission to Melbourne, Australia. It chronicles the intertwining of the lives and destinies of three main characters: Smoot, a Utah native who struggles with carnality and lack of conversion and spirituality; Babakian, an Australian convert who used to be a punk rocker and has become frustrated with Mormonism's blandness and conformity; and Samantha, a nonmember part-Tongan Utahn with whom Smoot was involved before his mission. Speaking generally, the novella is about how Babakian misuses his creative powers of art and sexuality, how Samantha explores the gospel and changes her life, and how Smoot matures spiritually and learns to sacrifice.

Texto completo
Resumen
The purpose of this thesis was to visualize the 1.7 billion stars released by the European Space Agency, as the second data release (DR2) of their Gaia mission, in the open source software OpenSpace with interactive framerates and also to be able to filter the data in real-time. An additional implementation goal was to streamline the data pipeline so that astronomers could use OpenSpace as a visualization tool in their research. An out-of-core rendering technique has been implemented where the data is streamed from disk during runtime. To be able to stream the data it first has to be read, sorted into an octree structure and then stored as binary files in a preprocess. The results of this report show that the entire DR2 dataset can be read from multiple files in a folder and stored as binary values in about seven hours. This step determines what values the user will be able to filter by and only has to be done once for a specific dataset. Then an octree can be created in about 5 to 60 minutes where the user can define if the stars should be filtered by any of the previously stored values. Only values used in the rendering will be stored in the octree. If the created octree can fit in the computer’s working memory then the entire octree will be loaded asynchronously on start-up otherwise only a binary file with the structure of the octree will be read during start-up while the actual star data will be streamed from disk during runtime. When the data have been loaded it is streamed to the GPU. Only stars that are visible are uploaded and the application also keeps track of which nodes that already have been uploaded to eliminate redundant updates. The inner nodes of the octree store the brightest stars in all its descendants as a level-of-detail cache that can be used when the nodes are small enough in screen space. The previous star rendering in OpenSpace has been improved by dividing the rendering phase into two passes. The first pass renders into a framebuffer object while the second pass then performs a tonemapping of the values. The rendering can be done either with billboard instancing or point splatting. The latter is generally the faster alternative. The user can also switch between using VBOs or SSBOs when updating the buffers. The latter is faster but requires OpenGL 4.3, which Apple products do not currently support. The rendering runs with interactive framerates for both flat and curved screen, such as domes/planetariums. The user can also switch dataset during render as well as render technique, buffer objects, color settings and many other properties. It is also possible to turn time on and see the stars move with their calculated space velocity, or transverse velocity if the star lacks radial velocity measurements. The calculations omits the gravitational rotation. The purpose of the thesis has been fulfilled as it is possible to fly through the entire DR2 dataset on a moderate desktop computer and filter the data in real-time. However, the main contribution of the project may be that the ground work has been laid in OpenSpace for astronomers to actually use it as a tool when visualizing their own datasets and also for continuing to explore the coming Gaia releases.

Resumen
This paper presents the application of advanced optimization techniques to Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) Mission Path Planning System (MPPS) using Multi-Objective Evolutionary Algorithms (MOEAs). Two types of multi-objective optimizers are compared; the MOEA Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithms II (NSGA-II) and a Hybrid Game strategy are implemented to produce a set of optimal collision-free trajectories in three-dimensional environment. The resulting trajectories on a three-dimension terrain are collision-free and are represented by using Be´zier spline curves from start position to target and then target to start position or different position with altitude constraints. The efficiency of the two optimization methods is compared in terms of computational cost and design quality. Numerical results show the benefits of adding a Hybrid-Game strategy to a MOEA and for a MPPS.

Resumen
F3-30 is the low-bypass-ratio turbofan engine which has been developed to power the T-4 intermediate trainer for the Japan Air Self Defence Force (JASDF). The qualification tests of the engine were successfully completed in March, 1986, and the actual field service was started in September, 1988. Before the start of the actual use, accelerated mission tests (AMT) were conducted for the purpose of finding deficiencies which would occur in the actual mission usage, and verifying the time between overhaul (TBO) of the initial service. This paper describes the test method, the results, and the evaluation for them. Also it presents current status and basic ideas for the future reliability improvement of the F3-30 engine.

Resumen
In August 2022, the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satelite (TESS) will start its fifth year of exploration having observed and analyzed more than a million stars in the search of extrasolar planets around both celestial hemispheres. At this time, with 5,767 declared TESS objects of interest (TOI), the total number of confrmed planets that appear in peer-reviewed journals exceeds 220. This article describes the prototype design and domain conversion strategies used for the sonification of Data Validation Time-series (DVT) fles from TESS mission. Focused on 132 examples of publicly available lightcurves from stars hosting at least one planet confrmed during the first four years of TESS observations, the resulting proposal allows the multi-modal and multi-channel automatic interactive aural exploration of astronomical variables, generating sequences of complete soundscapes from target variables stored in each DVT file, which can be controlled in terms of complexity and balance. Aesthetics and inspiring aspects of Sonification are also open for discussion.

Resumen
The U.S. Navy has incorporated a realm of new technologies into ship warfare in the last few years. This availability has led to advances in ship machinery systems that have enabled the Navy to improve and sustain its mission capabilities. Since 2003, the Navy has worked with manufacturers to develop, test and evaluate a gas turbine electric starter system (GT-ESS) capable of meeting all starting requirements of the General Electric LM2500 marine gas turbine. This engine is used on U.S. Navy Surface Combatants for vessel propulsion. The GT-ESS has also been used to start a newly acquired naval engine from Rolls Royce, the MT30. The GT-ESS has endured extensive test and evaluation at the Land Based Engineering Site (LBES) of the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division in Philadelphia, PA. Throughout this time the system has been redesigned as well to comply with more restrictive shipboard requirements. This effort had a direct impact on the packaging of the system. Additional effort has been directed to machinery integration. Full integration of the GT-ESS onto the LM2500 engine entails sharing a common lubrication and cooling loop. This is a challenge for the engine since its lubrication is critical for its service life. It poses a challenge for the GT-ESS since its design must guarantee that the lubrication system will remain free of contamination. The GT-ESS also poses integration challenges for a ship installation. The ideal location of the GT-ESS in the ship is adjacent to the propulsion engine within the machinery room space. Switchboards that provide power to the system are located several decks above the machinery space. Additionally, dedicated power supplies are required to handle the power requirements of the GT-ESS. Thus this power demand calls for an assessment of the power loads onboard ship. This new technology also has an impact on other ship systems. The GT-ESS driver is water cooled and designed to feed from the chill water system of the ship. Its electric motor lubrication has ties with another naval technology (digital fuel control). In turn these two are tied to the lube oil system and conditioning assembly (LOSCA) of the engine. Thus issues of oil pressure, temperature, backpressure, suction, and starvation are addressed and assessed. This paper explores the impact of ship machinery design for ship installation and its impact on other machinery systems as well as ship’s power. It targets proper hardware packaging as a means to achieve a well balanced design for ship application.

Resumen
Abstract Optimal navigation of ground vehicles in an off-road setting is a challenging task. One must accurately model the properties of the terrain and reconcile it with vehicle capabilities, while simultaneously addressing mission requirements. An important part of navigation is path planning, the selection of the route a vehicle takes between the start and end points. It is often seen that, given the starting and end points for a vehicle, the optimal path that the vehicle should take varies considerably with the mission requirements. While most commonly used algorithms use a local cost function, mission requirements are typically defined over the entire run of the vehicle. Utility theoretic methods provide a normative tool to model tradeoffs over attributes (mission requirements) that the operator cares about. It is critical therefore, that preferences embedded in the utility function influence the local cost functions used. In this paper, we provide a framework for a feedback-based method to update the parameters of the local cost-function. We do so by using a geodesic-based method for path planning given the terrain inputs, followed by a physics-based simulation of a vehicle to evaluate the attributes. These attributes are then combined into a multiattribute utility function. An optimization-based approach is used to find the parameters of the cost function that maximizes this multiattribute utility. We present our approach on a vehicle navigation example over a terrain acquired from United States Geological Survey data.

Resumen
Nowadays, lots of opportunities are offered to students to fly their own experiment on board of rockets or balloons. Thanks to those opportunities, young scientists have a chance to experience hands-on project and even to find a vocation: pursuing experimentations on-board of flight missions. However, it can appear, for these young professionals, that flying on board sounding rockets or stratospheric balloons is hard to access or to afford. Yet the opportunities exist and are waiting for them! Space educational programmes enable students to learn, in a short period of time, all phases of a scientific project; a unique chance to experience a full project cycle from objectives’ definition to the publication of the results. Thus, students define mission requirements, design, manufacture, test and finally launch their own experiment! On REXUS/BEXUS [1] for example, students experience an end-to-end project with all disciplines required by a Space project (science, mechanics, electronics, software, system engineering, management, finances, outreach). The concretisation of all efforts occurs during the launch campaign, organised at SSC Esrange (Sweden). The campaign is always an intense period for the participants: high level of concentration, pressure, stress but a massive work that pays off during the flight and after. Usually, this key event enables ideas and improvements to pop up; a prolific event to define the next step of an experiment, maybe on a future mission! Many students start their professional career after the campaign. Despite new ideas and the drive to pursue, a common idea of these young professionals is that it is hard to access to flight opportunities on sounding rockets or stratospheric balloons while not being a student anymore: too expensive to finance a campaign? too complex to organise? who to contact? Many questions that it is time to answer. Yes, it is possible! At SSC, we enable access to stratospheric balloons, sounding rockets and drop tests on a cost-efficient entrance level or fully funded through national and international programmes. One of these examples is the EOSTRE mission [2] (Experiment on Outliving Microorganisms under Stratospheric Environment), developed by FH Aachen University of Applied Sciences (Germany) in collaboration with the University of Oulu (Finland); a former BEXUS team that developed its own balloon mission, launched successfully from Esrange in March 2020. Several former students from REXUS/BEXUS have joined professional opportunities, such as the HEMERA [3] programme, with the experiments GRASS from INAF (Istituto Nazionale di Astrofisica) and STRAINS (Sapienza University, Rome) and launched it from Esrange in September 2021. Today, SSC is also offering ride share opportunities on sounding rockets with the programme SubOrbital Express [4]; first successful launch was in June 2019 on board MASER 14 (S1X-1). Opportunities are still open for the next missions in fall 2022 (S1X-3) and in 2023 (S1X-4)

Resumen
The F109-GA-100 (F109) engine, originally developed by Garrett under contract to the U.S. Air Force, is a state-of-the-art powerplant designed specifically for trainer use. The engine has been designed and demonstrated to be fully aerobatic capable, without limitations throughout the training envelope. To minimize student pilot workload, the engine features a full-authority digital electronic fuel control with automatic start and restart, automatic overspeed-/temperature-limiting, simple power management with no restrictions in operation and automatic thrust trim. Maintenance features include extensive built-in test and data logging to support effective life management. Designed for an 18,000-hour life to a duty cycle with a mission severity comparable to that of a fighter, the F109 has demonstrated exceptional durability and high reliability. This durability — coupled with excellent fuel efficiency that rivals a turboprop — resulted in extremely low life-cycle-cost (LCC) as demonstrated in accelerated mission testing. This paper describes the design features of the F109 that establish this engine as a trendsetter for the 1990s and beyond.

Resumen
Reliable vehicle start is necessary to support mission success, especially for response time. At Department of Defense installations in cold regions, vehicles using rechargeable battery and starter technologies have significant issues starting in the cold. Ultracapacitor engine start modules (ESMs) are an alternate technology to rechargeable lead-acid or lithium-ion batteries. The project develops a performance baseline for the ESM used in the M1126 Stryker Combat Vehicle under cold conditions. To test the performance of the ESMs in a cold room, a mechanical load system was constructed to replicate the load of starting a Stryker engine and instrumented with sensors to monitor parameters such as voltage, torque, and temperature. The ESMs were tested with the load system at temperatures from 24°C to −40°C. The results of the tests showed that there was some degradation of the ultracapacitor’s performance at the colder temperatures, which was expected, but no permanent damage. This work provides a test protocol and capability to evaluate next-generation vehicle battery systems for cold regions applications. Additionally, the ESM cold performance data establish a baseline to compare next-generation vehicle battery storage systems and to support cold regions missions and identify potential performance requirements for future vehicle battery system acquisition.
