Quaternary volcanoes from the southeastern Tibetan Plateau occur at the Tengchong volcanic field (TVF). The Daliuchong volcano is the largest volcano in the TVF, which has the most felsic compositions with explosive eruptions. The eruption history and origin of the Daliuchong volcano are a matter of debate. In the present paper, we report the groundmass K-Ar ages, whole-rock Sr-Nd-Pb-Hf isotopes, zircon U-Pb ages, and Hf-O isotopic compositions for the Daliuchong volcano to constrain its eruption history and petrogenesis. The groundmass K-Ar ages and zircon U-Pb ages indicate mid-Pleistocene (0.6 Ma to 0.3 Ma) eruptions. The presence of zircon phenocrysts with enriched mantle-like O-Hf isotopes (δ18O < 6‰, and εHf about −2) suggests the involvement of mantle-derived basaltic magmas. The whole-rock Pb isotope compositions and Sr-Nd isotope modeling reveal the involvement of magma from the lower crust. The zircon xenocrysts reveal previously unrecognized 20-Ma magmatic activity at the TVF and contamination of late Cretaceous (66–80 Ma) S-type granites during the formation of the Daliuchong dacites. The dacite magma at Daliuchong was formed by mixing of the mantle-derived magma and lower-crust-derived magma and subsequently contaminated by upper crustal materials, including late Cretaceous S-type granitic rocks.

Apatite Sr-Nd and zircon Hf-O isotopes are broadly used to trace magma sources and constrain magma evolution processes, further improving our understanding of the origin of granitoids. We present zircon U-Pb ages, whole-rock major and trace elements, and whole-rock Sr-Nd-Hf, zircon Hf-O, and apatite Sr-Nd isotopic data for the coarse-grained quartz monzonite, biotite monzogranite, and granite porphyry in the Yushulinzi pluton in the Liaodong Peninsula, the eastern North China Craton, to establish their magma sources and petrogenesis. The coarse-grained quartz monzonite, biotite monzogranite, and granite porphyry were formed contemporaneously, with zircon U-Pb ages of 123–119 Ma. They share enriched whole-rock Sr-Nd-Hf and zircon Hf isotopic compositions, and the coarse-grained quartz monzonite has crust-like δ18O values (5.7–6.7‰). The coarse-grained quartz monzonite and biotite monzogranite have variable apatite (87Sr/86Sr)i ratios and negative apatite εNd(t) values. These isotopic characteristics indicate that the different rock types in the Yushulinzi pluton were derived from the partial melting of ancient crustal material in the North China Craton. Their geochemical and petrographic characteristics indicate that the crystal-melt segregation model can be employed to elucidate the genetic links among different rock types, with the coarse-grained quartz monzonite representing crystal accumulation and the biotite monzogranite and granite porphyry representing interstitial melts extracted from a crystal-rich magma chamber. Furthermore, the variable apatite Sr isotopic compositions and subtle differences in the peak zircon εHf(t) values of the studied rock samples confirm the possibility of a contribution from shallow crustal components and materials with high εHf(t) values during magma evolution, which is not readily revealed by their whole-rock Sr-Nd-Hf isotopic compositions. These results demonstrate that in situ apatite Sr-Nd and zircon Hf-O isotopic analyses have the potential to provide distinctive insights into the magma sources and evolution of magmatic systems.

Research subject. The isotopic composition (Pb-Pb, Sm-Nd, Rb-Sr, Os/Os, Hf/Hf, 3 He/4 He, etc.) of magmatic complexes and ore-magmatic systems (OMS) of two ore clusters (Kupolsky and Ilirneysky) located in the subpolar Western Chukotka was studied. These ore clusters differ from each other both in their structural position and the age of their magmatic complexes, within which the largest deposits of Au-Ag type are known. Materials and methods. The Pb-Pb, Rb-Sr, SmNd, Re-Os, Lu-Hf, 3 He/4 He, 40Ar/36Ar and sulphur isotopic systems were studied at the VSEGEI centre for isotopic studies (St. Petersburg), as well as at the Institute of Geology, Geochemistry and Ore Deposits (IGEM, Moscow) and the Laboratory of Stable Isotopes of the Far Eastern Geological Institute (FEGI, Vladivostok). Re and Os were measured using an ELEMENT-2 inductively coupled plasma single-collector mass spectrometer. Sulphur isotopic ratios were measured using a Finnigan MAT 253 isotope mass spectrometer. Results and conclusions. On the basis of the isotope-geochemical data obtained, an assumption was made that various deep sources participated in the magma generation, and the differentiated composition of late melts may reflect the melting processes of the crust upper horizons. When comparing the data on the magmatism of the Ilirneysky and Kupolsky ore clusters, a different degree of crustal rock influence on melt generation was revealed. The Kupolsky ore cluster is characterised by a large influence of mantle sources in intraplate magmatism associated with ore formation processes. This is likely to have determined a greater amount of mineralisation in the Kupolsky cluster compared to the Ilirneysky ore cluster.

Lava samples from the Christmas Island Seamount Province (CHRISP) record an extreme range in enriched mantle (EM) type Sr-Nd-Pb-Hf isotope signatures. Here we report osmium isotope data obtained on four samples from the youngest, Pliocene petit-spot phase (Upper Volcanic Series, UVS; ~4.4 Ma), and four samples from the earlier, Eocene (Lower Volcanic Series, LVS; ~40 Ma) shield building phase of Christmas Island. Osmium concentrations are low (5–82 ppt) with initial Os isotopic values (187Os/188Osi) ranging from (0.1230–0.1679). Along with additional new geochemical data (major and trace elements, Sr-Nd-Pb isotopes, olivine δ18O values), we demonstrate the following: (1) The UVS is consistent with melting of shallow Indian mid-ocean ridge basalt (MORB) mantle enriched with both lower continental crust (LCC) and subcontinental lithospheric mantle (SCLM) components; and (2) The LVS is consistent with recycling of SCLM components related to Gondwana break-up. The SCLM component has FOZO or HIMU like characteristics. One of the LVS samples has less radiogenic Os (γOs –3.4) and provides evidence for the presence of ancient SCLM in the source. The geochemistry of the Christmas Island lava series supports the idea that continental breakup causes shallow recycling of lithospheric and lower crustal components into the ambient MORB mantle.

Abstract Although continental crust is characterized by the widespread occurrence of granitoids, the causal relationship between continental crust growth and granitic magmatism still remains enigmatic. While fractional crystallization of basaltic magmas (with or without crustal contamination) and partial melting of mafic lower crust are two feasible mechanisms for the production of granitoids in continental arc regions, the problem has been encountered in discriminating between the two mechanisms by whole-rock geochemistry. This can be resolved by an integrated study of zircon U-Pb ages and Hf-O isotopes together with whole-rock major-trace elements and Sr-Nd-Pb isotopes, which is illustrated for Mesozoic granitoids from the Gangdese orogen in southern Tibet. The results provide geochemical evidence for prompt reworking of the juvenile mafic arc crust in the newly accreted continental margin. The target granitoids exhibit high contents of SiO2 (65.76–70.75 wt%) and Na2O + K2O (6.38–8.15 wt%) but low contents of MgO (0.19–0.98 wt%), Fe2O3 (0.88–3.13 wt%), CaO (2.00–3.82 wt%), Ni (<5.8 ppm), and Cr (≤10 ppm). They are enriched in large ion lithophile elements, Pb, and light rare earth elements but depleted in high field strength elements. The granitoids are relatively depleted in whole-rock Sr-Nd isotope compositions with low (87Sr/86Sr)i ratios of 0.7043–0.7048 and positive εNd(t) values of 0.5–2.6, and have relatively low 207Pb/204Pb and 208Pb/204Pb ratios at given 206Pb/204Pb ratios. Laser ablation–inductively coupled plasma–mass spectrometry and secondary ion mass spectrometry U-Pb dating on synmagmatic zircons yield ages of 77 ± 2–81 ± 1 Ma in the Late Cretaceous for their emplacement. Relict zircons have two groups of U-Pb ages in the late Mesozoic and the late Paleozoic, respectively. The whole-rock Sr-Nd isotopes in the granitoids are quite similar to those of Late Cretaceous mafic rocks in the Gangdese batholith. In addition, both synmagmatic zircons and relict zircons with Late Cretaceous U-Pb ages exhibit almost the same Hf-O isotope compositions to those of the slightly earlier mafic rocks. All these observations indicate that the granitoids were mainly derived from partial melting of the juvenile mafic arc crust. Therefore, reworking of the juvenile mafic arc crust is the mechanism for the origin of isotopically depleted granitoids in southern Tibet. It is this process that leads to differentiation of the juvenile mafic arc crust toward the felsic lithology in the continental arc. In this regard, the granitoids with depleted radiogenic isotope compositions do not necessarily contribute to the crustal growth at convergent plate boundaries.

AbstractThe geology of Puerto Rico is divided into three regions: the north, central and SW igneous provinces. Characterized by its Jurassic ophiolitic mélange basement, lithology of the SW Igneous Province (SIP) is not related to either of the other two provinces. The ophiolitic mélange is exposed in three peridotite belts: Monte del Estado, Rio Guanajibo and Sierra Bermeja. We present geochemical data to identify the tectonic setting of the SIP peridotite formation and its relation to the evolution of the Caribbean Plate. Comparisons of spinel Cr no. (13–21), Mg no. (63.3–69.6) and TiO2suggest an abyssal peridotite origin; however, only Sierra Bermeja presents high TiO2characteristics of a mid-ocean-ridge-basalt- (MORB-) like melt reaction. Temperatures determined with two-pyroxene geothermometers indicated a cold thermal regime ofc. 800–1050°C, with characteristics of large-offset transform fault abyssal peridotites. The geochemistry and Sr–Nd–Hf–Pb isotopic compositions of basalts within the mélange were also analysed. Las Palmas amphibolites exhibited normal-MORB-like rare earth element (REE) and trace-element patterns, whereas metabasalts and Lower Cajul basalts exhibited island-arc tholeiitic-like patterns. Highly radiogenic Sr isotopes (0.70339–0.70562) of the basalts suggest seawater alteration; however, Pb–Pb and Nd–Hf isotope correlations represent the primary compositions of a Pacific/Atlantic MORB source for the amphibolites, metabasalts and Lower Cajul basalts. We propose that the SIP ophiolitic mélange was formed along a large-offset transform fault, which initiated subduction and preserved both proto-Pacific and proto-Caribbean lithospheric mantle. Younger Upper Cajul basalts exhibited enriched-MORB-like geochemical and isotopic signatures, which can be attributed to a tectonized Caribbean ocean plateau.

Abstract The E-trending Gangdese porphyry copper belt in southern Tibet is a classic example of porphyry mineralization in a continental collision zone. New zircon U-Pb geochronological, zircon Hf-O, and bulk-rock Sr-Nd isotope data for the Miocene mineralizing intrusions from the Qulong, Zhunuo, Jiru, Chongjiang, and Lakange porphyry copper deposits and Eocene igneous rocks from the western Gangdese belt, together with literature data, show that both Paleocene-Eocene igneous rocks and Miocene granitoids exhibit coupled along-arc isotopic variations, characterized by bulk-rock ɛNd(t) and zircon ɛHf(t) values increasing from ~84° to ~92°E and then decreasing toward ~95°E. These are interpreted to reflect increasing contributions of subducted Indian continental materials from ~92° to ~84°E and from ~92° to ~95°E, respectively. The Miocene mineralizing intrusions were derived from subduction-modified Tibetan lower crust represented isotopically by the Paleocene-Eocene intrusions, with contributions from Indian plate-released fluids and mafic melts derived from mantle metasomatized by subducted Indian continental materials. Involvement of isotopically ancient Indian continental materials increased from east (Qulong) to west (Zhunuo), which is interpreted to reflect an increasingly shallower angle of the downgoing Indian slab from east to west, consistent with geophysical imaging. Exploration of Gangdese Miocene porphyry copper deposits should focus on the Paleocene-Eocene arc where the subarc mantle was mainly enriched by fluids from the subducted Neo-Tethyan oceanic slab. Neodymium-Hf isotope data for mineralizing igneous rocks from porphyry copper deposits globally show no obvious correlations with Cu endowment. Although Nd-Hf isotopes are useful for imaging lithospheric architecture through time, caution must be taken when using Nd-Hf isotopes to evaluate the potential endowment of porphyry copper deposits, because other factors such as tectonic setting, crustal thickening, magma differentiation, fluid exsolution, and ore-forming processes all play roles in determining Cu endowments and grades.

AbstractThe Mansehra granite in the NW Himalaya is a typical Lesser Himalayan granite. We present here new whole-rock geochemistry, Rb–Sr and Sm–Nd isotope data, together with zircon U–Pb ages and Hf isotope data, for the Mansehra granite. Geochemical data for the granite show typical S-type characteristics. Zircon U–Pb dating yields 206Pb/238U crystallization ages of 483–476 Ma. The zircon grains contain abundant inherited cores and some of these show a clear detrital origin. The 206Pb/238U ages of the inherited cores in the granite cluster in the ranges 889–664, 1862–1595 and 2029 Ma. An age of 664 Ma is considered to be the maximum age of the sedimentary protoliths. Thus the Late Neoproterozoic to Cambrian sedimentary rocks must be the protolith of the Mansehra granitic magma. The initial Sr isotope ratios are high, ranging from 0.7324 to 0.7444, whereas the εNd(t) values range from −9.2 to −8.6, which strongly suggests a large contribution of old crustal material to the protoliths. The two-stage Nd model ages and zircon Hf model ages are Paleoproterozoic, indicating that the protolith sediments were derived from Paleoproterozoic crustal components.

In an attempt to investigate the nature and origin of mantle heterogeneities beneath the South Mid-Atlantic Ridge (SMAR), we report new whole-rock Sr, Nd, Pb, and Hf isotopic data from eight basalt samples at four dredge stations along the SMAR between 18°S and 21°S. Sr, Nd, and Pb isotopic data from SMAR mid-ocean ridge basalts (MORBs) at 18–21°S published by other researchers were also utilized in this study. The SMAR MORBs at 18–21°S feature the following ratio ranges: 87Sr/86Sr = 0.70212 to 0.70410, 143Nd/144Nd = 0.512893 to 0.513177, 206Pb/204Pb = 18.05 to 19.50, 207Pb/204Pb = 15.47 to 15.71, 208Pb/204Pb = 37.87 to 38.64, and 176Hf/177Hf = 0.283001 to 0.283175. The 87Sr/86Sr, 143Nd/144Nd, 206Pb/204Pb, and 176Hf/177Hf ratios of these MORBs varied considerably along the SMAR axis. The variable compositions of the Sr–Nd–Pb–Hf isotopes, combined with the corresponding whole-rock major and trace elemental abundances reported in previous studies, suggest that the SMAR MORBs at 18–21°S were probably derived from a heterogeneous mantle substrate related to a mixture of depleted mantle (DM) materials with a small amount (but variable input) of HIMU (high-μ, where μ = 238U/204Pb)- and enriched (EMII)-type materials. The HIMU-type materials likely originated from the proximal St. Helena plume and may have been transported through “pipe-like inclined sublithospheric channels” into the SMAR axial zone. The EMII-type materials possibly originated from a recycled metasomatized oceanic crust that may have been derived from the early dispersion of other plume heads into the subcontinental asthenosphere prior to the opening of the South Atlantic Ocean. In addition, the contributions of subducted sediments, continental crust, and subcontinental lithospheric mantle components to the formation of the SMAR MORBs at 18–21°S may be nonexistent or negligible.

Calc-alkaline andesitic rocks are a major product of subduction-related magmatism at convergent margins. Where these melts are originated, how long they are stored in the magma chambers, and how they evolved is still a matter of debate. In this study, we present new data of whole-rock elemental and Sr-Nd-Pb isotope compositions, and zircon U-Pb-Th isotopes and trace element contents of Nageng (basaltic-)andesites in the East Kunlun Orogen (NW China). The similar age and whole-rock elemental and Sr-Nd-Pb isotope contents suggest that the Nageng andesite and basaltic andesite are co-magmatic. Their low initial 87Sr/86Sr (0.7084–0.7086) but negative εNd(t) values (−10.61 to −9.49) are consistent with a magma source from the juvenile mafic lower crust, possibly related to the mantle wedge with recycled sediment input. The U-Pb age gap between the zircon core (ca. 248 Ma) and rim (ca. 240 Ma) reveals a protracted magma storage (~8 Myr) prior to the volcanic eruption. When compared to the zircon rims, the zircon cores have higher Ti content and Zr/Hf and Nb/Ta ratios, but lower Hf content and light/heavy rare earth element ratios, which suggests that the parental magma was hotter and less evolved than the basaltic andesite. The plagioclase accumulation likely resulted in Al2O3-enrichment and Fe-depletion, forming the calc-alkaline signature of the Nageng (basaltic-)andesites. The magma temperature, as indicated by the zircon saturation and Ti-in-zircon thermometry, remained low (725–828 °C), and allowed for the magma chamber to survive over ~8 Myr. The decreasing εHf(t) values from zircon core (avg. 0.21, range: −1.28 to 1.32) to rim (avg. −3.68, range: −7.30 to −1.13), together with the presence of some very old xenocrystic zircons (268–856 Ma), suggest that the magma chamber had undergone extensive crustal contamination.

The petrogenesis and geodynamic implications of the Early Paleozoic adakitic rocks in the east of Inner Mongolia remain topics of debate. This study presents new petrology data through zircon U-Pb age and Lu-Hf isotopic composition, whole-rock major-trace element geochemistry, and Sr-Nd isotopes from adakitic rocks. The zircon U-Pb dating results demonstrate that the formation age is 242.8 ± 1.0 Ma, which is the product of Early Triassic magmatism. Petrology and geochemical study have shown that the granodiorite have high SiO2 (66.93~69.40%), Al2O3 (15.37~15.43%), and MgO (1.35~1.55%), with LREE enrichment and HREE deficit, and they have high Sr, low Y, and high Sr/Y ratios, showing typical signatures of adakitic rocks. The εHf(t) values of zircon vary between +11.3 and +13.8, with low whole-rock (87Sr/86Sr)i (0.703382) and positive εNd(t) values, and the average Mg# of the rock is 56.14, suggesting that adakite derived from partial melting of MORB materials and magma interaction with the mantle. Comprehensive analysis suggests that during the Late Permian to Early Triassic, the subducted slab of the Paleo-Asian Ocean broke off, and the residual oceanic slab preserved in the mantle beneath the subduction zone underwent partial melting, generating adakitic magma.

Permian intermediate–felsic igneous rocks, widely distributed in the southern Beishan orogen, provide crucial constraints on the geodynamic process of the late Paleozoic Paleo-Asian Ocean. New zircon U–Pb dating using LA–ICP–MS determines the age of the northern Qingshan diorites, the Heishantou quartz diorites, and the southern Qingshan biotite granodiorites at 300 Ma, 294 Ma, and 291–286 Ma, respectively. Their whole-rock compositions exhibit arc-like geochemical features. Moreover, their zircon trace elements show the characteristics of continental arc zircons. The diorites, characterized by low SiO2, high MgO with Mg# (50–52), and low Cr, Co, and Ni, display enrichment in Sr-Nd-Hf isotopes (87Sr/86Sr = 0.7060 to 0.7061; ℇNd(t) = −1.4 to −1.7; ℇHf(t) = −4.7 to −0.6), originating from the fractionation process of magma derived from the enriched mantle. The quartz diorites show moderate SiO2 and variable MgO (2.75–3.84 wt%) and exhibit enrichment in Sr-Nd (87Sr/86Sr = 0.7048–0.7050; ℇNd(t) = −1.5–+0.9) and depletion in zircon Hf isotopes (ℇHf(t) = 3.8 to 7.8). Combined with their high Y (20.0–21.0 ppm) and low (La/Yb)N (6.0 to 17.2), we conclude that they originated from the juvenile lower crust previously influenced by oceanic sediments, with the input of enriched mantle-derived materials. The biotite granodiorites display low A/CNK (0.91–0.97), 10000*Ga/Al (1.8–1.9), and Ti-in-zircon temperatures (average 711 °C), indicating that they are I-type granitoids. These rocks show enrichment in Sr-Nd isotopes (87Sr/86Sr = 0.7054 to 0.7061; ℇNd(t) = −2.0 to −1.6) and many variable zircon Hf isotopes (ℇHf(t) = −2.3 to +4.5). Geochemical studies indicate that they originate from the mixing of magmas derived from the enriched mantle and preexisting juvenile lower crust. All these data imply the existence of oceanic subduction in southern Beishan during the early Permian. Integrating these results with previous studies, it is inferred that the retreating subduction of the Liuyuan Ocean contributed to early Permian intermediate–felsic rocks becoming widespread in the Shibanshan unit, the southernmost part of the Beishan orogen, and also why the Paleo-Asian Ocean in southern Beishan did not close during the early Permian.

The Paleoproterozoic Khondalite Belt, located in the northwestern segment of North China Craton (NCC), is characterized by widespread high-temperature/ultrahigh-temperature (UHT) granulite/gneiss and large-scale magmatic activity. The tectonic evolution is still controversial. Here, we report new geochronological, elemental, and Hf-O-Sr-Nd isotopic data for a Paleoproterozoic layered complex in the Jining terrane to constrain the tectonic evolution of the Khondalite Belt. In situ zircon U-Pb dating indicates that the Sanchakou gabbros were emplaced between ~1.94 Ga and ~1.82 Ga, which might be the heat source of UHT metamorphism. The elemental and Hf-O-Sr-Nd isotopic analysis shows that the formation of Sanchakou gabbros is consistent with the assimilation and fractional crystallization (AFC) process. The magma originates from the 10%~20% partial melting of the spinel + garnet lherzolite mantle. The Sanchakou gabbros are magmatic crystallization products mixed with crustal wallrocks in the magma chamber. We have established a tectonic evolution model involving asthenosphere upwelling after the amalgamation of the Ordos and Yinshan Blocks at ~1.95 Ga.

ABSTRACT:The Lu-Hf and Re-Os isotope systems have been applied sparsely to elucidate the origin of granites, intracrustal processes and the evolution of the continental crust. The presence or absence of garnet as a residual phase during partial melting will strongly influence Lu/Hf partitioning, making the Lu–Hf isotope system exceptionally sensitive to evaluating the role of garnet during intracrustal differentiation processes. Mid-Proterozoic (1·1–1·5Ga ) ‘anorogenic’ granites from the western U.S.A. appear to have anomalously high εHf values, relative to their εNd values, compared with Precambrian orogenic granites from several continents. The Hf-Nd isotope variations for Precambrian orogenic granites are well explained by melting processes that are ultimately tied to garnet-bearing sources in the mantle or crust. Residual, garnet-bearing lower and middle crust will evolve to anomalously high εHf values over time and may be the most likely source for later ‘anorogenic’ magmas. When crustal and mantle rocks are viewed together in terms of Hf and Nd isotope compositions, a remarkable mass balance is apparent for at least the outer silicate earth where Precambrian orogenic continental crust is the balance to the high-εHf depleted mantle, and enriched lithospheric mantle is the balance to the low-εHf depleted mantle.Although the continental crust has been envisioned to have exceptionally high Re/Os ratios and very radiogenic Os isotope compositions, new data obtained on magnetite mineral separates suggest that some parts of the Precambrian continental crust are relatively Os-rich and non-radiogenic. It remains unclear how continental crust may obtain non-radiogenic Os isotope ratios, and these results have important implications for Re-Os isotope evolution models. In contrast, Phanerozoic batholiths and volcanic arcs that are built on young mafic lower crust may have exceptionally radiogenic Os isotope ratios. These results highlight the unique ability of Os isotopes to identify young mafic crustal components in orogenic magmas that are essentially undetectable using other isotope systems such as O, Sr, Nd and Pb.

The nature and origin of the early Yanshanian granitoids, widespread in the South China Block, shed light on their geodynamic setting; however, understanding their magmatism processes remains a challenge. In this paper, we present both major and trace elements of bulk rock, Sr–Nd–Pb isotopic geochemistry, and zircon U–Pb–Hf isotopes of the low Sr and high Yb A2-type granites, which were investigated with the aim to further constrain their petrogenesis and tectonic implications. Zircon U–Pb dating indicates that these granites were emplaced at ca. 153 Ma. The granites are characterized by high SiO2 (>74 wt.%) and low Al2O3 content (11.0 wt.%–12.7 wt.%; <13.9 wt.%). They are enriched in large ion lithophile elements (LILEs) (e.g., Rb, Th, U, and K) and Yb, but depleted in high field-strength elements (HFSEs) (e.g., Nb, Ta, Zr and Hf), Sr, Ba P, Ti and Eu concentrations. They exhibit enriched rare earth elements (REEs) with pronounced negative Eu anomalies. They have εNd(t) values in a range from −6.5 to −9.3, and a corresponding TDM model age of 1.5 to 1.7 Ga. They have a (206Pb/204Pb)t value ranging from 18.523 to 18.654, a (207Pb/204Pb)t value varying from 15.762 to 15.797, and a (208Pb/204Pb)t value ranging from 39.101 to 39.272. The yield εHf(t) ranges from −6.1 to −2.1, with crustal model ages (TDMC) of 1.3 to 1.6 Ga. These features indicate that the low Sr and high Yb weakly peraluminous A2-type granites were generated by overlying partial melting caused by the upwelling of the asthenosphere in an extensional tectonic setting. The rollback of the Paleo-Pacific Plate is the most plausible combined mechanism for the petrogenesis of A2-type granites, which contributed to the Sn–W polymetallic mineralization along the Shi-Hang zone in South China.

Himalayan leucogranite is an excellent target for understanding the orogenic process of the India–Asia collision, but its origin and tectonic significance are still under debate. An integrated study of geochronology, geochemistry, and in situ Sr-Nd-Hf isotopes was conducted for a tourmaline-bearing leucogranite in the eastern Tethyan Himalaya using LA-ICP-MS, X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy, and ICP-MS and LA-MC-ICP-MS, respectively. LA-ICP-MS U-Pb dating of zircon and monazite showed that it was emplaced at ~19 Ma. The leucogranite had high SiO2 and Al2O3 contents ranging from 73.16 to 73.99 wt.% and 15.05 to 15.24 wt.%, respectively. It was characterized by a high aluminum saturation index (1.14–1.19) and Rb/Sr ratio (3.58–6.35), which is characteristic of S-type granite. The leucogranite was enriched in light rare-earth elements (LREEs; e.g., La and Ce) and large ion lithophile elements (LILEs; e.g., Rb, K, and Pb) and depleted in heavy rare-earth elements (e.g., Tm, Yb, and Lu) and high field strength elements (HFSEs; e.g., Nb, Zr, and Ti). It was characterized by high I Sr (t) (0.7268–0.7281) and low ε Nd (t) (−14.6 to −13.2) and ε Hf (t) (−12.6 to −9.47), which was consistent with the isotopic characteristics of the Higher Himalayan Sequence. Petrogenetically, the origin of the leucogranite is best explained by the decompression-induced muscovite dehydration melting of an ancient metapelitic source within the Higher Himalayan Sequence during regional extension due to the movement of the South Tibetan Detachment System (STDS). The significantly high lithium and beryllium contents of the leucogranite and associated pegmatite suggest that Himalayan leucogranites possess huge potential for lithium and beryllium exploration.

Shoshonitic rocks are widely distributed in post-collisional settings and provide key information on deep geodynamic mechanisms and magmatic evolution. In this paper, we present petrographic, zircon U-Pb age-related, trace elemental, Hf isotopic, bulk-rock elemental, and Sr-Nd isotopic data of the Dalongtan shoshonitic syenite porphyries (DSSPs) in central Yunnan, southeastern Tibet. The DSSPs formed at 33.2 ± 0.3 Ma in a post-collisional setting. They define linear trends on Harker diagrams, and they display similar trace element patterns and enriched bulk-rock Sr-Nd isotopes [(87Sr/86Sr)i = 0.70964–0.70968, εNd(t) = −12.9 to −12.7] and zircon Hf isotopes (εHf(t) = −15.7 to −13.1) to the coeval mantle-derived potassic mafic rocks. This suggests that the DSSPs were fractionated from the lithospheric mantle-derived mafic magmas. The DSSPs, along with the coeval felsic and mafic magmatic rocks (37.2–32.3 Ma), exhibit a planar distribution on the SE Tibet and predate the left-lateral shearing of the Ailaoshan–Red River shear zone (ARSZ) (32–22 Ma), suggesting that there are no genetic relationships between them. The DSSPs have geochemical characteristics similar to those of A-type granites, with high total alkalinity (10.39–11.17 wt.%), HFSE concentrations (Zr + Nb + Ce + Y = 890.2–1054.3 ppm), Ga/Al ratios (10,000 × Ga/Al = 2.95–3.46), whole-rock zircon saturation temperatures (906–947 °C), and oxygen fugacity (ΔFMQ = +3.30–+4.65), indicating that they are products of the high-temperature melting of the lithosphere as a result of asthenosphere upwelling in extensional settings. Based on our data and regional observations, it is proposed that the generation of the DSSPs may be linked to the convective thinning of the thickened lithospheric mantle following the India–Asia collision.

AbstractMagmatic periodicity is recognized in continental arcs worldwide, but the mechanism responsible for punctuated arc magmatism is controversial. Continental arcs in the Trans‐Himalayan orogenic system display episodic magmatism and the most voluminous flare‐up in this system was in early Eocene during the transition from subduction to collision. The close association of the flare‐up with collision is intriguing. Our study employs zircon Lu‐Hf and bulk rock Sr‐Nd isotopes, along with mineral geochemistry, to track the melt sources of the Nymo intrusive complex and the role of mantle magma during the early Eocene flare‐up of the Gangdese arc, Tibet. The Nymo intrusive complex is composed of gabbronorite, diorite, quartz diorite, and granodiorite which define an arc‐related calc‐alkaline suite. Zircon U‐Pb ages reveal that the complex was emplaced between ~50–47 Ma. Zircon Hf isotopes yield εHf(t) values of 8.2–13.1, while whole‐rock Sr and Nd isotopes yield εNd(t) values of 2.7–6.5 indicative of magmatism dominated by melting of a juvenile mantle source with only minor crustal assimilation (~15%–25%) as indicated by assimilation and fractional crystallization modeling. Together with published data, the early Eocene magmatic flare‐up was likely triggered by slab breakoff of subducted oceanic lithosphere at depths shallower than the overriding plate. The early Eocene magmatic flare‐up may have contributed to crustal thickening of the Gangdese arc. This study provides important insights into the magmatic flare‐up and its significant role in the generation of large batholiths during the transition from subduction to collision.

The research on highly fractionated granite has significant implications for both the evolution and compositional maturation of the continental crust and metallogenic exploration. As a means of further understanding crustal evolution and promoting ore exploration in the Bangong–Nujiang metallogenic belt (BNMB), we present the petrography, zircon LA–ICP–MS U–Pb age, and Hf isotopic data, along with the whole-rock geochemical and Sr–Nd isotopic composition on Kese highly fractionated granite in the Baingoin area within the BNMB, central Tibet. The results show that Kese granite possesses a zircon U–Pb age of 127.8 ± 1.7 Ma and a relative enrichment in zircon Hf isotopic composition (−12.8~+0.3) with a two-stage Hf model age of 1.2~2.0 Ga. This granite belongs to the high-K calc-alkaline series, characterized by a strongly peraluminous feature, and is enriched in large-ion lithophile elements (LILEs) and Nd isotopes (−7.86~−7.74). The granite was likely to have been derived from the mixed melts derived from 40%~45% juvenile basaltic lower crust, 15%~20% ancient lower, and 40% middle–upper, following intense fractional crystallization processes involving amphibole, biotite, plagioclase, and some accessory minerals during the magma’s evolution. We infer that Kese highly fractionated granite can be formed from the continental collision of the Lhasa–Qiangtang terranes initiated before 128 Ma. The reworking of pre-existing juvenile and ancient crustal materials drove the composition of the northern Lhasa terrane to that of a mature continental crust. Moreover, the distinctive geochemical features have shown that the high degree of differentiation led to intense magmatic–hydrothermal interaction during the formation of Kese granite. A comparison of the geochemical characteristics of mineralized and barren granites suggests that the highly fractionated granites in Baingoin from the BNMB have a high economic potential and are suitable for preliminary exploration of Sn–W-(U) deposits.

Within the Himalayan collisional belt, granites occur along two subparallel belts, namely, the Tethyan Himalayan Sequence (THS) and the Greater Himalayan Crystalline Complex (GHC). In this study, Eocene adakitic rocks and leucogranite are found only in the northern Himalayas, so further research is required to constrain their origin. Here, we present zircon U–Pb and monazite U–Th–Pb ages, Sr–Nd–Pb and Hf isotopes, and whole-rock major and trace elements for Liemai muscovite granite in the eastern Himalayan region. The U–(Th)–Pb results show that Liemai muscovite granite was emplaced at 43 Ma, and that its geochemical characteristics are similar to those of adakitic rocks of the same age (Dala, Quedang, Ridang, etc.). Combined with previous studies, both Eocene adakitic rocks and leucogranite are high-potassium calc-alkaline peraluminous granites. The former is relatively rich in large-ion lithophile elements (LILEs), such as Ba and Sr, and relatively deficient in high-field-strength elements (HFSEs), such as Nb, Ta, Zr, and Y, with weak or no Eu anomalies, and the average light rare earth element (LREE)/heavy rare earth element (HREE) ratio is 17.8. The latter is enriched in LILEs (such as Rb) and U, Ta, and Pb, and depleted in HFSEs (such as Nb and Zr), La, and Nd, with obvious negative Sr, Ba, and Eu anomalies and a mean LREE/HREE ratio of 10.7. The 87Sr/86Sr of the former is in the range of 0.707517–0.725100, εNd (t) ranged from −1.2 to −14.7, the average is −11.6, εHf (t) ranged from −0.5 to −65, the average is −12.2. The average values of (206Pb/204Pb) i, (207Pb/204Pb) i and (208Pb/204Pb) i are 18.788, 15.712 and 39.221, respectively; The 87Sr/86Sr of the latter is in the range of 0.711049~0.720429, εNd (t) ranged from −9.8 to −13.8, the average is −12.3, εHf (t) ranged from −4.2 to −10, the average is −6.7. The isotopic characteristics indicate that adakitic rocks and leucogranites are derived from the ancient lower crust, and both may be derived from metamorphic rocks of the GHC. In this paper, the origin of the two is associated with the transformation of the Himalayan tectonic system during the Eocene, and it is inferred that the deep crust may have altered the tectonic environment (temperature and pressure), resulting in an obvious episodic growth trend of leucogranite and significant development of adakitic rocks from 51 to 40 Ma. From 40 to 35 Ma, the development of Eocene magmatic rocks was hindered, and adakitic rocks disappeared. It is proposed that the genetic difference is related to the transition from high to low angles of the subducting plate in the crustal thickening process.

The isotopic diversity of oceanic island basalts (OIB) is usually attributed to the influence, in their sources, of ancient material recycled into the mantle, although the nature, age, and quantities of this material remain controversial. The unradiogenic Pb isotope signature of the enriched mantle I (EM I) source of basalts from, for example, Pitcairn or Walvis Ridge has been variously attributed to recycled pelagic sediments, lower continental crust, or recycled subcontinental lithosphere. Our study helps resolve this debate by showing that Pitcairn lavas contain sulfides whose sulfur isotopic compositions are affected by mass-independent fractionation (S-MIF down to Δ33S = −0.8), something which is thought to have occurred on Earth only before 2.45 Ga, constraining the youngest possible age of the EM I source component. With this independent age constraint and a Monte Carlo refinement modeling of lead isotopes, we place the likely Pitcairn source age at 2.5 Ga to 2.6 Ga. The Pb, Sr, Nd, and Hf isotopic mixing arrays show that the Archean EM I material was poor in trace elements, resembling Archean sediment. After subduction, this Archean sediment apparently remained stored in the deep Earth for billions of years before returning to the surface as Pitcairn´s characteristic EM I signature. The presence of negative S-MIF in the deep mantle may also help resolve the problem of an apparent deficit of negative Δ33S anomalies so far found in surface reservoirs.

The geochemistry and Sr–Nd isotope, zircon U–Pb, and zircon Hf isotope compositions are reported for monzogranites and granodiorites from the Hazhu area in the northern Beishan orogen, northwestern China. Zircon U–Pb dating yielded ages of 270.1 ± 1.1 and 277.4 ± 1.2 Ma for the monzogranites and 263.6 ± 1.2 and 262.2 ± 1.1 Ma for the granodiorites. These monzogranites and granodiorites are metaluminous to weakly peraluminous I-type and belong to mid-K calc-alkaline and high-K calc-alkaline series. They exhibit high Mg# values and moderate degrees of differentiation (D.I. = 70.7–88.1). They are enriched in large-ion lithophile elements and light rare earth elements and depleted in high field strength elements. They show high (87Sr/86Sr)i ratios of 0.6995–0.7070 and high εNd(t) values of 4.37–5.70 with Nd model ages (TDM) of 522–789 Ma, suggesting a juvenile crustal origin. Furthermore, their εHf(t) values are all positive, and Hf isotopic crustal model ages ([Formula: see text] = 394–1097 Ma) also indicate a juvenile crustal origin. According to the data obtained in this study and other regional geological data acquired recently, the Hazhu granitoids were derived from common sources of melting from the Neoproterozoic to late Paleozoic juvenile crusts. The younger intrusions (granodiorites) are more basic, likely as a result of more juvenile lower crust being melted along with asthenospheric upwelling, which led to the addition of more basic components. These granitoids formed in a post-collisional setting. The tectonic regime transformed from an arc-related compressional setting to post-collisional extension, likely as a result of lithospheric extension and thinning in response to oceanic lithospheric delamination. These granitoids in the northern Beishan orogen were probably emplaced in a post-collisional extensional setting and suggest vertical continental crustal growth in the southern Central Asian Orogenic Belt.

Late Mesozoic granitic rocks are widely distributed in the Sulu orogenic belt, but the source, tectonic affinity, and associated geodynamic setting that produced the respective magmas remain controversial. To provide insights into these issues, we present field-based petrological, whole-rock major and trace element and Sr–Nd isotope geochemical, zircon U–Pb dating, and Lu–Hf isotope studies on two types of granite porphyry dykes that are newly recognized from the central Sulu belt. U–Pb dating of magmatic zircons from both types yields consistent ages that vary between 124 ± 2 and 118 ± 2 Ma, constraining the timing of intrusion as Early Cretaceous. The granitic rocks have high-K calc-alkaline peraluminous compositions with low Mg# values and are characterized by fractionated rare earth element patterns with strong depletion in high field strength elements. Compared with type I of the granite porphyry dykes, type II exhibits higher SiO2 but slightly lower Na2O and K2O abundances, contains higher Rb/Sr and 87Sr/86Sr ratios, and shows more pronounced negative Eu, Sr, and Ba anomalies. Both types I and II have high initial 87Sr/86Sr ratios of 0.709–0.711 and negative εNd(t) values of −19.8 to −18.4. The magmatic zircons possess negative εHf(t) values of −29.1 to −20.8, with mostly Neoarchean Hf model ages of 3001–2478 Ma. These features, together with the presence of Neoproterozoic inherited zircons, indicate that the two types of granite porphyries successively crystallized from a joint granite magma that derived from partial melting of the continental crust of the Yangtze Craton. Therefore, an interrelationship between the granite porphyry dykes and massive magmatic granitoids from adjacent regions in the Sulu belt may be documented, recording evidence of a joint ancient crustal reworking and recycling in a fossilized continental subduction zone during the Early Cretaceous.

The Early Cretaceous intermediate intrusive rocks have important significance in understanding the crust–mantle interaction, iron mineralization, and tectonic evolution in the western Shandong Peninsula. In this study, we present new zircon U–Pb ages, and Hf isotope, whole-rock geochemistry, Sr–Nd isotopes, and the mineral chemistry of the diorite-porphyrite in the southern Xintai area, mid-western Shandong Peninsula. The diorite-porphyrite formed at ca. 125 Ma. They have intermediate SiO2 (59.57–62.29 wt.%) and MgO (2.78–3.58 wt.%) contents, high Mg# values (53–56), high Sr (589–939 ppm) and low Y (9.2–10.8 ppm) contents, and high Sr/Y ratios (54–94), showing adakitic affinity. The diorite-porphyrite exhibits lower zircon εHf(t) values (−30.1 to 7.5) and whole-rock εNd(t) values (−3.5 to −6.0), with (87Sr/86Sr)i ratios of 0.70514–0.70567. We suggest that the diorite-porphyrite was derived from the partial melting of the local delamination of lower continental crust and then by the interaction with the enriched lithospheric mantle. The genesis of diorite-porphyrite may be related to the rollback process of the Paleo-Pacific slab in the Early Cretaceous. This geodynamic process induced the melting of the enriched lithospheric mantle, subducted oceanic crust, and local delamination of lower continental crust, which produced different types of adakitic magmatism in the western Shandong Peninsula.

The Early Cretaceous Weideshan granites are associated with large-scale Au and polymetallic Cu-Mo-Pb-Zn mineralization. To investigate the petrogenesis of the Weideshan granite and constrain its tectonic setting during the Early Cretaceous, we conducted a zircon U-Pb-Hf isotope and whole-rock geochemical and Sr-Nd isotopic study of the granite. In situ zircon U-Pb dating of three granite samples yielded Early Cretaceous ages of 112.83 ± 0.80, 112.64 ± 0.91, and 111.82 ± 0.78 Ma. The samples had high-K calc-alkaline compositions and were enriched in the light rare earth and large-ion lithophile elements (e.g., K, Rb, Ba, Th, and U) and depleted in high-field-strength elements (e.g., Nb, Ti, and P). The samples had small negative Eu anomalies and initial 87Sr/86Sr and εNd(t) values of 0.70853–0.71029 and –18 to –14, respectively. The zircon εHf(t) values varied between −16 and −12, with corresponding two-stage model ages (tDM2) of 2180–2000 Ma. These characteristics indicated that the Weideshan pluton was formed in a back-arc extensional environment caused by subduction of the Paleo-Pacific Plate toward the Asian continent during the early Cretaceous. The magma was generated by crust–mantle interaction during lithospheric thinning. The diagenetic age of the Weideshan granites was the same as the formation age of gold and polymetallic ores in the Jiaodong area. The extensive fluid circulation induced by the magma emplacement may be the main source of ore-forming materials for the gold and polymetallic Cu-Mo-Pb-Zn deposits.

The Sanjiang Indosinian orogen, located in the eastern part of the Paleo-Tethys tectonic domain, is a critical region to study the Paleo-Tethyan Ocean evolution. Middle Permian–Late Triassic magmatic rocks are widespread in the Deqin–Weixi–Madeng area of southwestern (SW) Sanjiang Indosinian orogen, yet their petrogenesis and tectonic setting remain disputed. In this study, LA-ICP-MS zircon U-Pb age and Hf isotopes, and whole-rock elemental and Sr-Nd isotope geochemistry of Madeng dacite were studied. The Madeng dacite was dated at ca. 241.7 and 243.4 Ma. The samples had high Al2O3 (12.91 to 14.39 wt.%) but low MgO (0.62 to 1.76 wt.%) contents, and were alkali-rich (Na2O + K2O = 6.97 to 8.66 wt.%) with A/CNK > 1.1, strongly resembling peraluminous S-type granites. The rocks were enriched in Rb, K, Th, U and LREE, but depleted in Ba, Sr, Nb, Ta, P and Ti, and showed obvious negative Eu anomalies, suggesting fractionation of Ti-bearing minerals (e.g., rutile and ilmenite) and plagioclase. The dacite had an initial 87Sr/86Sr value of 0.705698 to 0.710277, and negative εNd(t) (−11.28 to −10.64) and εHf(t) (−13.99 to −8.60), indicating a continental meta-sedimentary source. Their average Nb/Ta (12.24) and Th/U (4.65) were also consistent with continental crust. According to the lithological assemblage and geochemical features, we propose that the Deqin–Weixi–Madeng area intermediate-felsic magmatism was generated in a subduction-related tectonic setting.

Abstract We present new Sr-Nd-Pb-Hf isotopic data on mafic lavas from the Sivas, Develidağ, Erciyes, and Erkilet volcanic complexes in central Turkey and Tendürek in eastern Turkey to evaluate the mantle sources for volcanism in the context of the geodynamic evolution of the Anatolian microplate. Early Miocene through Quaternary volcanism in Western Anatolia and latest Miocene through Quaternary activity in Central Anatolia were dominated by contributions from two distinct source regions: heterogeneous metasomatized or subduction-modified lithosphere, and roughly homogeneous sublithospheric ambient upper mantle; we model the source contributions through mixing between three end members. The sublithospheric mantle source plots close to the Northern Hemisphere reference line (NHRL) with radiogenic 206Pb/204Pb of ∼19.15, while the other contributions plot substantially above the NHRL in Pb isotope space. The lithospheric source is heterogeneous, resulting from variable pollution by subduction-related processes likely including direct incorporation of sediment and/or mélange; its range in radiogenic isotopes is defined by regional oceanic sediment and ultrapotassic melts of the subcontinental lithospheric mantle. The geochemical impact of this contribution is disproportionately large, given that subduction-modified lithosphere and/or ocean sediment dominates the Pb isotope signatures of mafic Anatolian lavas. Subduction of the Aegean or Tethyan seafloor, associated with marked crustal shortening, took place throughout the region until ca. 16–17 Ma, after which time broad delamination of the thickened lower crust and/or the Tethyan slab beneath Central Anatolia allowed for sediment and/or mélange and slab-derived fluids to be released into the overlying evolving modified mantle. Aggregation of melts derived from both mantle and lithospheric domains was made possible by upwelling of warm asthenospheric material moving around and through the complexly torn younger Aegean-Cyprean slab that dips steeply to the north beneath southern Anatolia.

AbstractIn the past ten years, a great deal of geological study has been reported on the magmatic rocks exposed in the central and western region of the Kuluketage Block, while similar research in the eastern region has rarely been reported. In this paper, we report zircon U–Pb geochronological, zircon Lu–Hf isotopic, whole-rock elemental and Sr–Nd–Pb isotopic data for the Dapingliang intermediate-acid intrusive rocks in the eastern Kuluketage Block, in order to evaluate its petrogenesis and tectonic significance. Laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) zircon U–Pb dating provided a weighted mean 206Pb/238U age of 735 ± 3 Ma for the albitophyre (D1), 717 ± 2 Ma for the granite porphyry (D2) and 721 ± 1 Ma for the diorite porphyrite (D3). Geochemical analyses reveal that D1 and D2 belong to Na-rich alkaline A-type granites, and D3 shows the features of high-K calc-alkaline I-type granite. D1 and D2 are characterized by light rare earth element (LREE) enrichment and relative depletion of high field strength element (HFSE), with relatively flat heavy rare earth element (HREE) patterns and obviously negative Eu anomalies. D3 is characterized by the enrichment of LREE and depletion of HFSE, with negative slope HREE patterns and slightly negative Eu anomalies. In tectonic discrimination diagrams, D1 and D2 fall in the within-plate granite (WPG) field, indicating a rift setting. Although D3 falls within the volcanic arc granite (VAG) field, it most likely formed in a rift setting, as inferred from its petrology, Sr–Nd–Hf isotopes and regional tectonic evolution. Based on pronounced εNd(t), εHf(t), Pb isotopic data, TDM2 and high (87Sr/86Sr)i and elemental compositions, D1 was derived from the partial melting of basement amphibolites of the old lower crust. D2 originated from a mixture of the old lower crust and depleted mantle-derived magmas and was dominated by partial melting of the basement amphibolites of the lower crust. D3 could have been formed by partial melting of K-rich hornblende in the lower crust. Combining previous studies, we think that the c. 745–710 Ma magmatic rocks were formed in a continental rift setting. A partial melting scheme, triggered by underplating of mantle plume-derived magmas, is proposed to interpret the formation of c. 745–710 Ma A-type and I-type granitoids, mantle-derived mafic dykes, bimodal intrusive rocks, adakitic granites and volcanic rocks. The study of ultramafic rocks in Western Yunnan is of great significance for an understanding of the tectonic evolution of the Neo-Tethys Ocean. The zircon U–Pb data indicated that the Santaishan serpentinized pyroxene peridotite (SSPP) was formed 186–190 Ma, and the Yingjiang hornblende pyroxenite (YHP) was formed 182–183 Ma. The content of MgO in the SSPP is relatively high, but the SiO2, Al2O3, CaO and TiO2 content and ΣREE are low, while the YHP has opposite characteristics. The samples from the SSPP and YHP have similar distribution patterns of trace elements, both being enriched in large ion lithophile elements (LILEs) such as Rb, Ba and Th and depleted in high field strength elements (HFSEs) such as Ti, P and Nb. These characteristics are consistent with the supra-subduction zone (SSZ) type and mid-ocean ridge basalt (MORB) type of ophiolite in the Bangong–Nujiang suture zone. The SSPP rocks have relatively high (87Sr/86Sr)i ratios (0.7091–0.7131) and positive Hf(t) values (11.2–13.8), with εNd(t) values varying from −1.1 to 9.4. The YHP has relatively low εHf(t) values (3.5 to 6.9), with the Nd–Hf isotopic model ages ranging from 610 to 942 Ma. The signatures of Sr–Nd and Lu–Hf isotopes indicate that the SSPP and YHP were derived from the depleted mantle, and the crustal material in the magma source may have originated from the Neoproterozoic Rodinia supercontinent. In the early Middle Jurassic (190 Ma), the Tengchong Block was in the setting of an active continental margin induced by the subduction of the Bangong–Nujiang Ocean, where the SSZ-type SSPP with ophiolite characteristics was formed. With the continuous subduction of the Bangong–Nujiang Ocean, the slab retreated and induced mantle convection, which resulted in the gradual thinning of the continental crust. Meanwhile, the Yingjiang back-arc basin was formed 183 Ma. Under the influence of the upwelling of the asthenosphere and the mixture of crustal materials, the MORB-type YHP was formed.

The extreme Sr, Nd, Hf, and Pb isotopic compositions found in Pitcairn Island basalts have been labeled enriched mantle 1 (EM1), characterizing them as one of the isotopic mantle end members. The EM1 origin has been vigorously debated for over 25 years, with interpretations ranging from delaminated subcontinental lithosphere, to recycled lower continental crust, to recycled oceanic crust carrying ancient pelagic sediments, all of which may potentially generate the requisite radiogenic isotopic composition. Here we find that δ26Mg ratios in Pitcairn EM1 basalts are significantly lower than in normal mantle and are the lowest values so far recorded in oceanic basalts. A global survey of Mg isotopic compositions of potentially recycled components shows that marine carbonates constitute the most common and typical reservoir invariably characterized by extremely low δ26Mg values. We therefore infer that the subnormal δ26Mg of the Pitcairn EM1 component originates from subducted marine carbonates. This, combined with previously published evidence showing exceptionally unradiogenic Pb as well as sulfur isotopes affected by mass-independent fractionation, suggests that the Pitcairn EM1 component is most likely derived from late Archean subducted carbonate-bearing sediments. However, the low Ca/Al ratios of Pitcairn lavas are inconsistent with experimental evidence showing high Ca/Al ratios in melts derived from carbonate-bearing mantle sources. We suggest that carbonate–silicate reactions in the late Archean subducted sediments exhausted the carbonates, but the isotopically light magnesium of the carbonate was incorporated in the silicates, which then entered the lower mantle and ultimately became the Pitcairn plume source.

Outcrops of late Paleozoic magmatic rocks are common in the Southern Beishan Orogenic Belt (SBOB), Southern Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB), which is a key object for the understanding of regional tectonism and defining the final closure time of the Paleo-Asian Ocean (PAO). We present zircon U-Pb chronology and whole-rock geochemistry data for late Paleozoic granodiorites and bimodal volcanic rocks from the Shuangyingshan-Huaniushan unit in the north Huitongshan-Zhangfangshan ophiolitic belt in the SBOB. The Zhangfangshan granodiorites (LA-ICP-MS, Ca. 288 Ma) are A2-type granite enriched in Rb, Th, Pb and LREEs and depleted in Nb, Ta, Ti, Sr, Ba and HREEs. They have varying MgO and TFe2O3 contents with high Mg# (38.56~48.97) values; the Lu/Yb ratios (0.14~0.15) of these granodiorites are similar to mantle-derived magma. A clear plagioclase zoning structure and acicular apatite occur in mineral assemblages derived from magma mixing between mafic and felsic magmas. The Baishantang bimodal volcanic rocks (272 Ma) consist of rhyolite and basaltic andesite. Baishantang rhyolites are A2-type felsic rock enriched in Rb, Th, Pb and LREEs and depleted in Nb, Ta, Ti, Sr, Ba and HREEs, with negative εNd(t) and εHf(t) (−5.2~−4.8 and −2.2~−1.9, respectively). Rhyolites originated from the partial melting of the crust, influenced by mantle material. Basaltic andesites belong to calc-alkaline series and have an enrichment of Rb, Ba, Th, U, Pb and LREEs, are weakly enriched in Zr-Hf, and are depleted in Nb, Ta, Ti and HREEs. The Nd-Hf isotopes of these basaltic andesites are not coupled with negative εNd(t) (−2.8~−0.4) and positive εHf(t) (1.8~5.5) values. These characteristics indicate that they originated from the partial melting of the mantle mixed with sediment-derived melts. In combination with previous studies, our findings show that the early Permian Zhangfangshan granodiorites and Baishantang bimodal volcanic rocks formed in a post-collision extensional setting, and the Huitongshan-Zhangfangshan ocean had been closed before early Permian.

Late Jurassic NE-trending A-type granitoids are widespread in the Shihang belt, South China, though their petrogenesis and geodynamic settings remain controversial. The Guiping complex is located on the southwest margin of the Shihang belt. In this study, the petrography, major and trace element geochemistry, whole-rock Sr-Nd isotopes, and zircon U-Pb geochronology of the Guiping complex were investigated. The Guiping complex is composed of the Fenghuangling and Xishan plutons; both plutons yielded zircon U-Pb ages of ca. 160 Ma. The Fenghuangling pluton has low SiO2 content of 54.26% to 60.31%, whereas the Xishan pluton exhibits high SiO2 content of 65.19% to 71.18%. Both of them are metaluminous and belong to the high-K calc-alkaline series and are enriched in large-ion lithophile elements (LILEs) such as Rb, Th, U, and Pb. The Fenghuangling and Xishan plutons showed enrichment in light rare earth elements (LREEs) and high-field strength elements (Nb, Ta, Zr, and Hf) and depletion in heavy rare earth elements (HREEs). Marked Nb and Ta negative anomalies were not observed. Due to the high contents of Zr + Ce + Nb + Y and high Ga/Al ratios, all the samples belonged to the group of A-type granites. The Fenghuangling and Xishan plutons had low ISr (mainly in the range of 0.7046–0.7058) and high εNd(t) (−0.60 to 1.94) values, though obviously different from those of the Precambrian basement in South China. Furthermore, they lie between the ocean island basalt (OIB) of the asthenosphere and the arc basaltic rocks of the enriched lithospheric mantle. Therefore, we proposed that the basaltic parental magma of the Guiping complex originated from partial melting of the enriched lithospheric mantle, which was metasomatized by asthenosphere-related OIB-type basaltic magma. Mafic microgranular enclaves in the Xishan pluton displayed positive Nb and Ta anomalies, which is consistent with OIB-type basalts. The enclaves also had similar Sr-Nd isotopic compositions to the Xishan pluton. That indicated that the enclaves were probably formed by mixing of the OIB-type basaltic magma and the Xishan pluton. In conclusion, the formation of the Late Jurassic NE-trending A-type granite belt was attributed to back-arc extension as a result of the rollback of the Paleo-Pacific Plate.

Owing to the paucity of research on synchronous mafic rocks in the Tarim Basin, the late Paleozoic–early Mesozoic tectonic development of this region is not well defined. The Halaqi region is situated on Tarim’s northwest edge, and numerous mafic dikes can be found cross-cutting the Permian strata. The whole-rock geochemistry, zircon U–Pb age, and Sr–Nd isotopic signature of these mafic rocks have never been reported before, and this contribution can offer geochronological and petrogenetic investigations that provide fresh insight into the geodynamic development of the area. Major oxide contents in the Halaqi mafic rocks vary, including SiO2 (45.74–50.31 wt.%), Al2O3 (13.28–14.8 wt.%), FeOT (16.48–19.19 wt.%), MgO (7.58–10.32 wt.%), CaO (7.19–12.39 wt.%), Na2O (2.97–4.50 wt.%), K2O (0.24–0.63 wt.%), TiO2 (1.11–1.29 wt.%), MnO (0.14–0.16 wt.%), and P2O5 (0.13–0.17 wt.%). The mafic rocks are enriched in high-field-strength elements (e.g., Zr and Hf) and large-ion lithophile elements (e.g., Sr, Th, and U) but depleted in Nb, Ta, and P. The total REEs in the rocks are lower (ΣREE = 72.80–86.85 ppm), and HREEs are somewhat depleted in comparison to LREEs, with positive Eu anomalies (Eu/Eu* = 1.05–1.17) but weak negative Ce anomalies (Ce/Ce* = 0.91–0.93). Zircon U–Pb ages of 201–247 Ma were obtained from a total of 18 magmatic zircon grains found in the mafic rocks that were studied. These results point to a middle-to-late Triassic emplacement. The mafic dikes exhibit somewhat enriched Nd isotopic compositions (εNd(t) = –1.6~–0.2) and an older Nd model age (TDM = 1.24–1.37 Ga). The Halaqi middle–late Triassic mafic dikes are thought to have originated from the same tectonic background as the Permian Tarim Large Igneous Province, along with similar geochemical and isotopic compositions. This suggests that they are all products of the interaction between asthenospheric and lithospheric mantles in an intraplate extensional environment. Research indicates that the Triassic mafic magmatism in northwest Tarim could be the product of the continuous thermal pulse of the Tarim mantle plume and be a part of the Tarim LIP.

The Jiaodong Peninsula is located on the junction of the North China Craton (NCC) and South China Block (SCB), where Mesozoic igneous rocks are widespread. However, the petrogenesis and tectonic settings for these Mesozoic igneous rocks are still controversial. In this study, we present detailed geochronological and geochemical analyses of quartz monzonite, monzogranite, syenogranite, and alkali feldspar granite in the Qingdao area, east of the Jiaodong Peninsula, to constrain their petrogenesis and tectonic setting. Zircon U–Pb dating shows that they mainly formed in the Early Cretaceous (120.5–113.1 Ma). Quartz monzonite exhibits adakitic geochemical features (e.g., low Y and high Sr/Y). Combined with its Sr–Nd–Hf isotopic features, we suggest that quartz monzonite may have been produced by the partial melting of phengite-bearing eclogites at the base of the thickened continental crust of the NCC. In contrast, monzogranite and syenogranite exhibit I-type granite affinities, whereas alkali feldspar granite exhibits features consistent with A-type granite. The strongly negative εHf(t) and εNd(t) values of the I-type rocks indicate that they were most likely produced through partial melting of granitic gneisses from the NCC, whereas A-type magmas may be formed through fractional crystallization from the non-adakitic granitic magma. Combined with previous studies, we suggest that these granitoids were formed in a lithospheric extensional setting via the rollback of the subducted Paleo-Pacific slab, which resulted in the reworking of the deep crust beneath the Sulu ultrahigh-pressure metamorphic belt.

The Hutouya polymetallic skarn deposit lies in the Qimantagh area of the East Kunlun Orogenic Belt, NW China. Skarnization and mineralization at the deposit are closely associated with contemporary felsic intrusions. In this paper, zircon U-Pb ages and zircon Hf isotope as well as whole-rock geochemical and whole-rock Sr-Nd isotope data are reported for intrusive rocks and crystal tuff of the Elashan Formation in the Hutouya area. Moreover, Re-Os ages and S-Pb isotopes are also reported for the ore minerals in the Hutouya deposit. The Zircon laser ablation–inductively coupled plasma–mass spectrometry (LA–ICP–MS) U-Pb age of granodiorite and Re-Os isochron age of molybdenite suggest that mineralizations occurred at ca. 227 Ma and that the granodiorite and molybdenite are closely related petrogenetically. All the granitoids in the Hutouya deposit are high-K calc-alkaline and metaluminous to weakly peraluminous I-type granitoids. Among them, the ore-forming granitoids were derived by the mixing of crust-derived (either juvenile or ancient mature lower crust) and mantle-derived magmas, whereas the non-ore-related granite porphyry was generated by the partial melting of a single ancient mature lower crust. The magmas of all the granitoids underwent extensive fractionation–crystallization during the process of rising and emplacement. The sulfur of the analyzed samples from the northern and middle zone of Hutouya deposit (including No. II, III, IV, and VI ore belts) belongs to deep magmatic sulfur, while the sulfur of samples from the southern zone of Hutouya deposit (No. VII ore belt) includes not only deep magmatic sulfur but also a contribution of strata sulfur. All the ore mineral samples in the Hutouya deposit have similar Pb compositions that are consistently derived from a mixed source of upper crust and mantle. Tectonic discrimination diagrams indicate a post-collisional setting for all granitic rocks of the Hutouya skarn deposit, which is therefore considered a product of a the post-collision extensional system and is consistent with other porphyry-skarn deposits within the East Kunlun Orogenic Belt.

Radiogenic isotopes of granitoids are widely applied to fingerprint the source of granitoids and study the magma mingling and assimilation processes, aiming to decipher the planetary differentiation. This weapon is based on the assumption that crustal melts inherit the radiogenic isotopes of protoliths. However, complicated melting processes in the crust would drive the radiogenic isotopes of melt away from the source, thus calling for a clear understanding of the behaviors of radiogenic isotopes during crustal melting. This study investigated the joint behavior of Rb-Sr, Sm-Nd, and Lu-Hf isotope systems during the melting of metasediments. Leucosome, schist, and leucogranite samples were collected from the Nyalam, South Tibet, where the leucosome was produced by muscovite dehydration melting of metapelites. Results show that the leucosome has a broad range of Sr-Nd-Hf isotopes (87Sr/86Sri: 0.763,48–0.875321, εNd(t): 14.6–11.6, εHf(t): 15.0–4.4) that deviate from the metasediments. We attributed it to the non-modal or disequilibrium melting of metapelites. The variation of Sr isotopes of leucosome is formed due to preferential entry into the melt of muscovite relative to plagioclase during melting. The changing 87Sr/86Sri and 87Rb/86Sr of leucosome define an errorchron at ∼ 500 Ma indicating an early Paleozoic tectono-thermal event supported by the U-Pb age of zircon cores (∼460 Ma) in the leucosome. The Nd isotopes of leucosome are mainly controlled by the preferential dissolution of apatite relative to monazite. The inadequate dissolution of zircon caused more depleted initial Hf isotopes compositions in the leucosome than the source. However, the leucosome with a higher crystallization temperature has radiogenic isotopic composition closer to the source. It indicates that the melting temperature greatly affects the isotope equilibrium between source and melt.

Abstract We report high-precision K isotopes, apatite U–Pb ages, whole-rock elements and Sr–Nd isotopes for the Saima nephelite syenite in the North China Craton. Trace-element and Sr–Nd–Hf–O isotope data indicate the presence of subducting sediments in the source region, while K isotopic compositions show a narrow range between –0.54 ‰ and –0.28 ‰, with an average of –0.41 ± 0.06 ‰, identical to the value of the asthenosphere. The nearly identical K isotopic compositions are low probability events compared with the K isotopic compositions of island arc lavas reported previously (–1.55 ‰ to +0.2 ‰). Although crustal contamination is consistent with the Sr–Nd–K isotopic data, alternatively we propose that the isotopic data also reconcile with the interaction between cratonic roots and the underlying convective asthenosphere, if this interaction is over prolonged periods of time. Numerical simulations successfully reproduced the observed data, if the metasomatism of the lithospheric mantle root, the source of the Saima alkaline rocks, occurred 500 Ma ago. Our study reveals that the isotopic compositions of fast-diffusion components in a lithospheric mantle metasomatized by ancient subducting melts can be effectively homogenized by convective asthenosphere through diffusion over a long time interval.
