Resumen
Already the Homeric period meant a high social status for successful athletes. However, it was exclusive; it excluded those whose time was needed to work for a living. Democratization in Athens and the militarization of sport in other fields had brought the spread of sport to the wider classes. Xenophanes became the first critic of the sport as a philosopher. Sophists, in turn, emphasized the importance of educational training for life, including sports education. Although the character of the historical Socrates is problematic, it is generally believed that Socrates left behind the legend of a physically immensely disposed, resilient man. Plato consolidated the role of sport through his role in social philosophy. Specifically, he spoke of the importance of the virtue ἀνδρεία. Although Aristotle characterizes kalokagathia and defined the role of sport within virtues, he was critical in its evaluation. He refused to practice sports if it led to a deterioration of the body. Partly archaic, especially classical Greek philosophy provided a theoretical rationale for recognizing sport as a meaningful activity, but also its critique.

Resumen
The educational aspects of sports were recognized during the development of sports along with its educational values, character formation, including the adherence to the fair play principle, primarily in English schools. Pierre de Coubertin, the founder of the modern Olympic Games, based his philosophy of Olympism on them, aiming for the development of athletes from different nations. Łódź, a multicultural place – a "small center of games" at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, was such a place. Sport and various forms of physical activity were the foundation for bringing together people from different social, cultural, and religious backgrounds in this rapidly growing industrial city. The Western European genealogy of fair play contains elements of medieval chivalric ethos, ethical virtues of Renaissance courtiers, and the moral ideals of a 19th-century English gentleman. The supplement to the fair play idea also includes the ethical sports contexts present in the histories of local sports communities. The overview of selected documents presented in this article testifies to the significant role of sport, along with the fair play principle, in the creation of a common, multicultural, industrial city. It also encourages a brief presentation of pioneering actions aimed at popularizing sports with the fair play principle during the development of Łódź.

Resumen
In this article, we present an analysis of recent handbooks, field guides and other educative texts on sports journalism. Authored mostly by current and former journalists turned university educators, these books signal the professionalization of sports journalism amid changes and challenges to news media industries. In offering guidance on best practice sports reporting, they are also situated in tension with the long-standing denigration of sports journalism as the trivial back-page filler that props up more serious, substantive content. Through a thematic analysis of the textbooks’ contents and the epistemic, economic and educative context of their collective emergence, we address the following question in what follows: How do these textbooks advise would-be sports journalists to respond to ‘serious’ social, ethical and political matters? In doing so, we detail how established categories of objectivity and ethics are the primary points of recourse through which these books advise on reporting about the many social issues in which sport is implicated. In turn, we reflect on the virtues of – and the tensions and contradictions surrounding – these advocations. By way of conclusion, we contend that professionalization represents an opportunity for collaborations between sport media scholars and current and former journalists – in their shared roles as educators – in the pursuit of ‘excellent’ sports reporting. The notion of ‘strong objectivity’ is our conceptual guide for how such collaborations might be fostered.

Resumen
Based on game reasoning theory (Shields & Bredemeier, 2001) and related research, the present study aimed at describing young elite athletes’ perceptions of rules compliance and transgression in competitive settings, as well as the underlying reasons for these actions. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 10 young elite athletes. The qualitative analysis showed that respect and transgression of rules in competitive settings were perceived to depend upon the athletes’ individual characteristics (e.g., desire to win), their social environment (e.g., coach’s pressure, team norms), sports values and virtues (e.g., fair play, the effort ethic), and modern sports rewards (e.g., media recognition, financial rewards). These results confirmed and expanded game reasoning theory and illustrated moral disengagement mechanisms (Bandura et al., 1996) in the sport domain.

Resumen
AbstractAnti-doping programs need to preserve and promote what is essential in sport and that is sport spirit and achieving perfection through the development of its own natural talents, in order to raise awareness about the importance of fair play and creating an environment that supports the sport without doping. These programs should be directed to the athletes and young people by creating a positive and long-term impact on the choices they make. Thanks to games that are used for children in preschool and primary school age it is possible to efficiently and timely impact on the development character and virtues because it is incomparably more difficult to form character and moral values in already formed athletes than in childrens who are just getting to know the world of sport and everything what he is carries. Childrens need to be instilled the importance of physical exercise and the importance of participation in sport without prohibited resources and methods that roughly violate the ideal of fair play and on that way promote at childrens health, fairness and equality for all athletes. Fair play was created out of chivalry and gentlemanly in the middle ages where many reformers proposed sport and games with the aim of education and strengthening moral values in children. Teaching children the ideals of fair play in which the sport is based, and their continued involvement in sports activities with special accent on the pedagogical aspect leads to raising the awareness of moral values and ideals of sports chivalry. Developing awareness among children about fair play and anti-doping implies greater satisfaction with the results achieved in sports activities, which is a win at all costs and with the use of illegal resourses worthless, and victors would not be able to refer to with pride.

Resumen
This research examines the organizational change in Chinese elite sport training at the grassroots level, which is perceived as foundational to and crucial for the development of sustainable competitive advantage at the Olympics. Predicted on an in-depth single case study design linked to qualitative research, this study pursued a “thick description” of the process of change in Shanghai elite sport training by identifying the impetus for change and factors moderating the change process. All qualitative data were sourced from semi-structured interviews and official and semi-official documents. Participants included current sport leaders; officials/administrators; senior, including head and non-head, coaches; and renowned Chinese social science scholars who either specialize in or are familiar with the elite sport training scene in general and the landscape at the grassroots level. The key findings, on the basis of organizational change theory, were that the internal and external political pressures are strongly linked to the growing concern about athlete performance management, the alignment of elite sport training with the sport service industry, and limited financial resources; the functional pressures emerge from the broadening of the talent pool of money-consuming sports and newly added Olympic sports; and other fields’ successful practices, the unlimited registration rule, and a virtuous cycle of training contribute to organizational change.

Resumen
Abstract Cardinal virtues present one of the oldest anthropological theories and ethical systems in the western philosophical tradition. Among other great ancient philosophers, Plato talked about four main virtues: prudence (practical wisdom), justice, fortitude (courage), and temperance (moderation). As these virtues are not arbitrary, but instead correspond to some fundamental characteristics of human beings, they are not only useful for moral decision-making, but they also present an original anthropological theory. This paper focuses on the role of prudence in sports. Prudence has two aspects: it is a) cognitive, and b) decision-making. Perceptively it is turned toward reality, “imperatively” toward volition and action. As such, it is a fundamental virtue in sports practices. First of all, its role is in the cognition of the specific situations an athlete is in. In addition, it gives instructions as to how to respond to them. Prudence directed into the cognition of reality involves two main elements, namely memoria and docilitas. The role of memoria consists in developing and enriching special motor memory from past experiences, and so it is one of the goals of any practice of technical elements. Docilitas is the kind of open-mindedness which recognizes the true variety of things and situations to be experienced and does not cage itself in any presumption of deceptive knowledge. As such, it can be recognized in the concept of sports as “knowledge-gaining activity”. The other aspect of prudence is directed towards deciding what actions to take. With solertia, the athlete can swiftly, but with open eyes and clear-sighted vision, decide to do something good in a concrete situation. The second element is providentia (foresight), meaning the capacity to estimate with a sure instinct for the future whether or not a particular action will lead to the realization of a goal. This is demanded of all sports, especially competitive sports, where the deciding factor between top and average athletes is often not physical or technical abilities but the intellectual capacity (or tactics) to foresee what is going to happen on the field in the next few moments.

Resumen
Sport: the Treasure of TemperanceThe modern lifestyle, with its emphasis on enjoyment and immoderation, could lead a human being to the point where he is not a master of himself anymore. Inner desires and outer pressures force a man to take those actions that are not in accordance with his rational human nature and that are not good for him. According to the classical philosophical view of Socrates, Plato and Aristotle, this clearly shows the inner slavery of modern man. Temperance, moderation or asceticism today seem old fashioned and unnecessary virtues; nevertheless, it is obvious that many problems of modern societies have roots in the absence of these virtues. These problems include a high percentage of obese population, different addictions and other health problems concerning the immoderate life style. It seems that nowadays enjoyment is the highest imperative for the individual and for society as a whole. However, these days it is possible to recognize the revival of these virtues. This paper points out the case of sport where these virtues are still cultivated and highly appreciated. At first this may seem somehow strange, because many times sport is perceived as connected with pleasure, fun and excess, but in reality sport demands much of participants. It could be even said that professional athletes are modern ascetics, and a big part of recreational sport is all but not enjoyment. In conclusion we can assert that virtues acquired in the field of sport can indeed help a human being to live a better life in general.

Resumen
In this paper the author considers the rules of sports (constitutive and sportsmanship rules), moral values of sports (justice, honesty, responsibility, benefi cence) and fair play. Constitutive rules are the rules which determine the essence of the game itself, determine the structure of a certain sport, standardize the way in which it is played and sanction unallowed sport activities. Sportsmanship represents unwritten moral rules based on virtues of righteousness and honesty. Moral values are predominant forms of understanding of the purpose of human activity and the way in which human moral character is practically manifested. Fair play can be defi ned as commitment to the spirit and letter of equality of competitors in relation to the rules, and all towards the common search for excellence. The author believes that the rules, moral values and fair play in sport are required for any game to become actually possible to play. Nevertheless, occasionally, the necessity of some of the above mentioned preconditions, for example sportsmanship, is being relativized. Namely, the standing point that a competitor needs to make a certain effort in order to encourage his opponent to play well, and thus raise the level of enjoyment for both himself and his opponent, does not meet either the general approval of athletes or of the public. It is generally claimed that it is suffi cient to play by the rules in order to proclaim the playing as morally correct. The author looks at such an attempt to separate the sport from morality through the prism of modern tendency to separate different forms of practical activity from their ethical implications.

Resumen
The Values in Action (VIA) Classification of Strengths and Virtues provides a detailed assessment of character based on 24-character strengths. The current study aimed to investigate whether these character strengths play role in adolescents' participation in extracurricular activities, specifically sports. To achieve this, a demographic questionnaire and the VIA Youth Survey (96-item) were completed by 3810 adolescents in the UK. The data were analyzed using binary logistic regression, and the findings indicated that the virtues of teamwork, perseverance, leadership, spirit, and zest were predictors of participation in sports during adolescence. The results also showed significant gender differences in character strengths and participation in sports. Female students scored higher on character strengths of prudence, perseverance, kindness, and humility, while male students scored higher on creativity, spirituality, and zest. Female students were also less likely to participate in sports compared to male students. The implications of these findings for future research and practice are discussed.

The purpose of the article: in a theoretical analysis, to substantiate the usefulness of judo martial arts philosophy in the upbringing of virtues of preschool children (5-6 years old) in judo physical activities. The article examines the historical and cultural path of judo and its philosophical aspect in the education of moral qualities following the rules and self-control, managing emotions through regulators. The problem and actuality in the 21st century is the growing aggressiveness, cruelty and emotional indifference of children revealed in sports lessons. During the discussions, it was found that children do not know what virtues are. The work of sports teachers revealed that it is possible to use the principles of judo philosophy to promote the virtues defined in regulatory documents. The conducted research revealed that Judo philosophy is useful for realizing children's intellectual potential, promoting socio-emotional development, cultivating the virtues of honesty, mutual help, respect, friendship, kindness and courage in physical activities with Judo exercises. The disciplined exercises embodied in the Judo philosophy can help promote self-discipline, self-control and endurance.

In most sports ethics, doping is addressed from a deontological or consequentialist perspective. It is suggested here that a virtue-ethical analysis informed by Confucianism can capture intuitions about the need to cultivate flourishing in sports. Specifically, it is argued that the Confucian virtues of zhong 忠 and shu 恕, necessary for Confucian ren 仁, can help us to articulate an account of flourishing in sports. As each Confucian virtue is articulated and then applied to sports, consideration is given to how it will alter the approach to doping as an ethical issue.

The purpose of this article is to examine the philosophy of chivalry and bravery in the sport of powerlifting. The philosophy and worldview of Iranians has been a philosophy of struggle since ancient times, and since long ago the call to help Ahura Mazda in the fight against the devil has been recognized as a sacred invitation. The discussion here is about how this philosophy and worldview, after Islam, is compatible with the rituals of the school of Fatut. Or the ritual of chivalry has continued as a social policy of Iranians. Conducting research is descriptive-analytical and documentary. The results of the research show that the religion of chivalry has spread and rooted with the use of principles such as spirituality and moral principles based on Islamic values, justice and kindness, with the efforts of chivalry and wrestlers in the sport of strength, which shows high human emotions and historical populism. It is Iranians. In Islam, fatut is considered as one of the characteristics of religion and a perfecting quality for mystics, and it is a contract between a disciple and a profession, it is a moral that leads to the refinement of morals and the strengthening of brotherhood among people, and calls to virtues and courage, and avoiding vices and cowardice. Islamic fatwat in Zorkhane sports, and the customs and ceremonies of the people of Zorkhane have their roots in Iranian-Islamic history and identity, and its spread in other sports has a wide reflection in criticizing the anomalies that rule the society, and increasing the true and authentic social and economic values. The fight against oppression and corruption will be done and these mystical professions can be introduced as a suitable moral model for the sports of today's youth.

Resumen
I defend an account of when and why anger is morally virtuous or vicious. Anger often manifests what we care about; a sports fan gets angry when her favorite team loses because she cares about the team doing well. Anger, I argue, is made morally virtuous or vicious by the underlying care or concern. Anger is virtuous when it manifests moral concern and vicious when it manifests moral indifference or ill will. In defending this view, I reject two common views about anger and moral character. First, I respond to several arguments that attempt to show that all anger is vicious. Then I respond to the view that some anger is required to be a virtuous person. Anger, on my view, can be morally virtuous but is not a necessary condition for being a virtuous person. This best accommodates not only morally irrelevant failures to get angry but also allows for emotional variation among virtuous people.

Resumen
Purpose The relevance of institution leaders’ personal qualities for providing quality education is widely recognized. The purpose of this paper is to explore vocational education and training (VET) institution leaders’ character features. The research question was twofold: What are the features of the character of the pedagogical leaders of three Latvian VET institutions according to students, teachers and institution board members? What are the differences between respondents’ groups regarding their perceptions of leaders’ virtues? Design/methodology/approach Six members of the institution board, five teachers and six students participated in structured qualitative interviews collected in 2013 in three high-quality VET institutions from different fields (tourism, sports and maritime education). Secondary analysis of latent content was used to explore respondents’ perceptions of leaders’ virtues, using software AQUAD 7 for qualitative data analysis. Findings The results revealed significant differences between students’ and staff (teachers’ and institution board members’) perceptions: the staff members appreciated particularly leaders’ performance virtues (“teamwork orientation”) and intellectual virtues (“critical thinking”), whereas, for students, heads’ moral virtues were more relevant, especially “magnanimity”. Respondents also showed concern about VET institution leaders’ civic virtues (“neighborliness,” “community awareness,” and “communicability”). Practical implications The results suggest that different perspectives, and in particular students’ voices, should be integrated in VET leaders’ assessment process and that their continuing professional development should also address their intellectual, moral and civic virtues. Originality/value This study represents an innovative methodological trial for investigating educational institution heads’ leadership from the lens of virtue ethics.

Resumen
AbstractTwo alternative ancient views on medicine and health can be distinguished in western antiquity: first, that the knowledge of the doctor is sufficient, and second, that health is primarily a consequence of adapting one’s own life to the wisdom of the body. The body works according to its own laws, has its own “logic,” and speaks its own language. Therefore, listening to the body can be an important source of information for a healthy human life. The body is not merely an object for human manipulation and “the prison of the soul,” but a source of learning and knowledge. It seems that people rarely listen to their own bodies; however, the ancient wisdom of listening to the body is still present and cultivated in modern sports training. Good athletes and trainers are the ones who learn from the body and recognize its messages. In this article, we focus on four aspects of wisdom of the body, presented through four virtues: prudence, justice, fortitude, and temperance. The body teaches us temperance and justice; for example, when someone exaggerates too much, the body produces the feeling of pain. The body is a source of fortitude and persistence when rest and healing is needed. The body is a source of prudence or truth about oneself when we face the physical demands of sport. Therefore, through modern sports practices, the perennial wisdom of the body is still accessible to the modern man.

Resumen
Elite sports education in Korea has structural contradictions. In other words, the process of elite sports is that professional exercise instructors provide intensive and systematic education for talented players. However, it is judged that since life sports are not active except for some sports in Korea, in many cases, talents are often discovered by starting elite sports education first. Furthermore, such elite sports education is directly linked to the college admission process for sport-specialty students, which means that the decision to quit athletics in the middle is to give up going to college, so student-athletes have no choice but to continue training and participating in competitions, even if they are not athletically gifted. As a result of a complete enumeration survey by the National Human Rights Commission of Korea, it was investigated that school classes were not being conducted properly in the case of student-athletes. Although remedial classes are supposed to make up for missing classes through the e-school system, in addition to an issue about the fidelity of learning when taking e-school, more importantly, e-school classes cannot replace character education and socialization education as a member of the community to be acquired in school life. Just the initial idea of introducing the e-school system for student-athletes meant that the Ministry of Education itself acknowledged the deficiencies of regular classes due to the activities of school athletic clubs, but it did not prepare an alternative to character education and socialization education. Character education and socialization education, such as the acquisition of universal knowledge for independent living of each citizen, as well as the virtues required as members of a social community, can be said to be essential elements for survival as a human being. That is why the Constitution stipulates the compulsory education system as a responsibility of the state. The recent measure by the Ministry of Education to expand the number of days acknowledged as attendance for student-athletes is an act of neglecting the state's obligations for 6 years of elementary education and 3 years of secondary education, which are stipulated in the Constitution. If school education with a public nature is disrupted by private education in the structure of school sports, it means that the state has rather taken advantage of school sports power despite its duty and responsibility to regulate appropriately for the normalization of school education. It would be reasonable for the government to face up to the structural problems of elite sports education and present solutions.

This essay is concerned with the challenges that moral “blind spots” create for the presence and endurance of democratic virtues under conditions of pluralism. A moral blind spot refers to the occlusions in individual moral perceptions and the limits that circumscribe moral sympathies owing to our ineluctable partialities as socially embedded beings. Blind spots constitute a tragic feature of human perception and moral judgment that facilitate and undermine human agency at once. Yet, far more problematic from the perspective of democratic epistemology and normative ethics is the denial or willful forgetfulness of their place in our individual and collective lives, and the concomitant failure to account for moral blind spots so as to check their most pernicious effects. Accounting for moral blind spots in practice requires actively planning for their presence through the cultivation of the “pathos of distance” towards ourselves and our collective political identities and social institutions.

Resumen
In Germany and France, football federations and clubs have now affirmed for decades their determination to fight racism and social or ethnic discrimination. Doing so, they persistently proclaim their faith in football’s integrative virtues, in its capacity to transform diversity into a force and its considerable contribution to nation-building. Yet, for most sports historians and sociologists, the number of studies required to draw robust conclusions on such a complex issue has not yet been produced. The present paper aims to question a few prevailing representations and sheds light on the advantages of a French-German comparative socio-historical approach considering a chronogical period going from 1950 to 2018. Its initial part is dedicated to a necessary liminary step: the definition of a conceptual tool-box. Then, it will focus on professional football. This is certainly the aspect of football retaining most of the attention of both the general public and the scholars when refering to the neighboring country. The final part of this article breaks down specific participation modalities of ethnic and national minorities in the system of football as a popular leisure sport in France and Germany. It thus explores to what extent one may mention a crucial influence of national integration and citizenship models in this context.

ABSTRACT Introduction: The essence of sustainable development is ecological civilization. The entire modern development, including sports in colleges and universities, is built based on resource conservation, enhanced environmental support capabilities, and a virtuous ecological environment cycle to achieve sustainable economic and social development. Objective: Looking at the development history of sports in Chinese colleges and universities for more than 50 years, there have been many successful experiences in human resource development, and there are also many problems that need to be solved. Methods: The author took 442 people from 4 provinces as the survey object, researched and discussed the evaluation indicators of the sustainable development of sports in colleges and universities. After factor analysis and professional theoretical research, a total of 15 indicators in 5 categories were established: science and technology, moral education, system Standard category, economic, competitive development category, external input category, and the coach training system category that eliminates “inbreeding.” Results: The author found in the research that both sports and non-sports families in China are unwilling to engage in sports and college sports for their children. The main reasons are traditional ideological issues, sports social status issues, and athletes’ education issues. Among them, coaches, the “inbreeding” training system is one of the main reasons that affect the sports talent resources of colleges and universities in China. Conclusions: There can be at least five types of evaluation indicators for the sustainable development of sports in Chinese colleges and universities: science and technology and ethics education, institutional norms, economic and competitive development, external investment, and a coach training system that eliminates inbreeding. The income of sports families is generally lower than that of non-sports families, and their education level is also lower. Level of evidence II; Therapeutic studies - investigation of treatment results.

Resumen
This article is devoted to the question of constructing a regression model, which will make it possible to analyze and predict the outcome of e-sports meetings in the DOTA 2 discipline using the Virtus Pro team as an example. In addition, throughout the text, a brief analysis of the e-sports industry these days, as well as a brief explanation of the essence of the chosen e-sports discipline are taken into consideration. Convincing arguments are presented that make it possible for the reader to understand that e-sports today can equal traditional sports in the following indicators: the number of followers, peak views as well as the amount of money circulating in the industry. The law introduced during the research is intended for the following external users: e-sports organizations, potential investors, breeders as well as for the players themselves. The resulting model was analyzed and described using various statistical indicators. A correlation grid was obtained, indicators of regression statistics were described, analysis of variance was made with a detailed description of its results. Factor signs considered during the research are described in detail for reader’s understanding. It is important to note that the resulting law makes it possible to apply it not only to the object of study, but also to other e-sports organizations having a team in this discipline, provided that their styles of playing the game have similarities. The tool for deriving the regression law was Microsoft Excel. The source of data is the team’s statistics, which were collected during real e-sports meetings by the leading site of statistics and the gaming community DOTA 2 — Dotabuff.

Resumen
Engineers today need not only intellectual abilities but also physical fitness and proper health which is defined by World Health Organization as the combination of Physical, Mental and Social Wellbeing. In this connection, we made an initiative of introducing Sports and Games as a mandatory course for students. The students of 3rd B.Tech have undergone the course for duration of 3 months and the outcomes of the course were assessed through a customized questionnaire which also accepted suggestions from the students for students pursuing engineering education. The experiment revealed fruitful outcomes in the form of benefits which the students gained by active participation in theory and practical classes. Qualities such as motivation, leadership, concentration, teamwork, relaxation, stress management etc. were found to be developed among the students and the students have expressed the support gained for their professional growth through this course. The academics of students were also taken into consideration which explained that the academics were nowhere disturbed due to participation in physical education and sports activities. Resumen
AbstractIn Ancient Greece, the figure of the hero was identified as a demigod, possessed of altruistic and virtuous deeds. When Pierre de Coubertin reinstated the Olympic Games, the athlete was personified as a modern hero. Its antithesis, the anti-hero, has more virtue that defects, no evil but he does not care on the means to achieve his goals. In the eyes of everyone involved in sports competition, these characters captivate and at the same time, create conflicts of ethics and aesthetics. The purpose of this paper is to perform an ethical reflection linked to principles that contribute for the human growth and accomplishment, as well as the aesthetic on the perception of the sensitive, reverberated by sensations and feelings emerging from athletes. Connecting the ethic with the aesthetic spheres, we could have in the sports a phenomenon walking toward a common point between moral and aesthetic, between the good and the beauty.

National character education is carried out through the education of values and virtues which are the basic values of culture and national character. The virtue that is an attribute of a character is basically a value. Therefore, cultural education and national character are basically the development of values derived from the Indonesian nation's view of life or ideology, religion, culture, and values formulated in the goals of national education. The process of developing the values that form the basis of the character requires a continuous process, carried out through various subjects in the curriculum (citizenship, history, geography, economics, sociology, anthropology, Indonesian language, social studies, science, mathematics, religion, physical education and sports, arts and skills).

Resumen
The article examines the history, semantic content and meaning of the "dance with daggers", which has been preserved today in the Western Adyghe culture as a solo male stage number. There are "kamechIas" - military sports and game exercises and a modern concert number with the same name. The military-sports, theatrical-circus and dance characteristics of this action are considered. It is proved that the dance is based on the demonstration of military virtues: the ability to freely and easily handle sharp knives, throw them at the target, overcome any obstacles through high jumps, keep the visible space in sight, gracefully control the body, overcome physical pain
