Resumen
Spodoptera litura (armyworm) is an important leaf pest that is polyphagic and has a broad range of hosts. Spodoptera litura is the main pest in soybean plants and can cause up to 50% damage and often results in decreased productivity and even crop failure. Spodoptera litura is widespread in areas with hot and humid climates from the subtropics to the tropics. S. litura pests attack cultivation plants in the vegetative and generative phases. The prospect of insect pathogens as a substitute for chemical insecticides is quite good in terms of their effectiveness and impact on the environment. Nuclear Polyhedrosis Virus (NPV) is one of the Baculoviridae viruses that infect the larval stage. Spodoptera litura Nuclear Polyhedrosis Virus (SlNPV) is a pathogenic virus that infects armyworms. SlNPV JTM 97C is an effective isolate in controlling larvae of Spodoptera litura. The larvae used in this study were larval instar 4, instar 5, and instar 6. The study was conducted using a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with 6 treatments and 3 replications. The treatments consisted of controls, 1 g / l, 2g / l, 3 g / l, 4 g / l, and 5 g / l. Each treatment was applied to instar 4, instar 5 and 6 instar larvae. The results showed that SlNPV JTM 97C affected mortality, stopped eating and pupa formation of instar 4, instar 5 larvae, but did not affect instar 6 larvae. The younger the larval instar the higher the pathogenicity response.

Perlakuan meliputi SlNPV 100 ml tanpa pemaparan UV A (a), SlNPV 100 ml tanpa bahan pelindung + UV A (b), SlNPV 100 ml + Molase 40% + UV A (c), SlNPV 100 ml + Kaolin 40% + UV A (d), SlNPV 100 ml + Tinopal 1% + UV A (e), SlNPV 100 ml + Sunblock SPF 50 5% + UV A (f). Setiap perlakuan diulang sebanyak 4 kali sehingga didapatkan 24 satuan percobaan.

Susceptibility of many insects to baculoviruses decreases with host development (Hochberg 1991), whereas the time required for infected hosts to die increases with larval age (Boucias et al. 1980; Bucher and Turnock 1983; Smits and Vlak 1988). The actual mechanism of this phenomenon, however, has not been established in many cases. The present study was undertaken to investigate the effect of larval age on the susceptibility of Spodoptera litura Fabricius to nuclear polyhedrosis virus (NPV) through oral and intrahaemocoelic routes of infection.

Resumen
Armyworm (Spodoptera litura) is an important pest that damages the leaves of soybean. SlNPV is one type of pathogen that has potential as a biocontrol agent to control armyworms because it is specific, selective, and effective. This study aimed to investigate the compatibility between the lemongrass and SlNPV in controlling armyworm. The Research was conducted at the Laboratory of Indonesian Legumes and Tuber Crops Research Institute (ILETRI) from February 2016 until April 2016. The study using completely randomized design with 7 treatments and 3 replication with a treatment that consists of control, SlNPV-JTM 97C 1,5 × 106 PIB/ml, 10% of lemongrass extract, a combination SlNPV-JTM 97C fixed concentrate of 1,5 × 106 PIB/ml with 2.5%, 5%, 7.5%, and 10% of lemongrass extract. The results showed that the combination of SlNPV-JTM 97C 1.5 × 106 PIB/ml with 10% lemongrass had the highest level of virulence, with 96% of mortality on larva 100% on the pupa stage, so that the combination of SlNPV and lemongrass extracts was compatible in controlling S.litura.

Resumen
One of the problem increased soybean production was Spodoptera litura (army worm), because army worm has been known to be resistant to many insec¬ticides. Alternatif control techniques should be explored to reduce population of the pest. Nuclear Polyhedrosis Virus (NPV) could storage one or more year, but must used technique cold storage so that not virulence decreased. This experiment was conducted to study (1) NPV patho¬genicity to army worm in the field, and (2) the effect of storage on the pathogenicity of NPV to S. litura. The research consisted of two experiments i.e. laboratory and field experiments. Each experiment had seven treatments arranged in a randomized completely block design. Each treatment was replicated four times. The results show the highest mortality of S. litura occurred in plot treated with 1,0 x 107 PIBs /ml, the mortality was 48 to 49,33 spec/plot after ten days aplicated . If comparative patogenicity the new and the old NPV was not significant. Population of army worm decreased significantly by NPV and control. So that patogenecity NPV storage one year as well as new NPV against army worm.

Spodoptera litura larvae are polyphagous insects and have caused a lot of damage to various commodities. The application of Nuclear Polyhedrosis Virus (NPV) can be used as an alternative to control, other than by using chemical pesticides. This research was conducted to compare the mortality of S. litura with NPV treatment and compare them with chemical pesticides. NPV treatment with a concentration of 0.3% is used to soak the leaves to be used as larvae feed, as well as chemical pesticides the active ingredient Lambda-cyhalothrin (with a concentration of 0.05%). Observations were made at 2, 24, 48, and 76 hours after application. The parameters observed from the treatment included the percentage of mortality and morphological changes of larvae. Observation of the morphological changes of larvae was carried out by the parameters of slowing motion, discoloration, decaying, and severe shrinkage. Based on the results of the comparison, the percentage of mortality in the treatment of chemical pesticides is higher than the NPV. Death of 100% in Lambda-Cyhalothrin treatment was recorded in the first 2 (two) hours, while for NPV treatment is as much as 80%. The larvae with NPV treatment undergo a process of color change and the decomposition process is faster than the treatment of Lambda-cyhalothrin.

Resumen
<p>Pests are one of the main obstacles in improving mungbean production in Indonesia. Currently, conventional control by using synthetic pesticides is less successful because the population and damage due to the organism are still high. This study aims to evaluate the mungbean pest control technology by using biopesticide. The experiment was conducted using randomized block design, five treatments and five replicates. The treatments were P1: preventive of neem seed powder (NSP), entompothogenic virus which contain <em>Spodoptera litura</em> nuclear polyhedrosis virus (Virgra), and conidia of entomopathogenic fungi <em>Beauveria bassiana</em> (BeBas) application; P2: SBM, Virgra, and BeBas application based on economic threshold (ET); P3: application of synthetic pesticides based on schedule; P4: application of synthetic pesticides based on ET; and P5: without control. The results showed that the pests were armyworm (<em>Spodoptera litura </em>(Fabricius)), whitefly (<em>Bemisia tabaci </em>(Gennadius)), <em>Empoasca</em> sp., <em>Megalurothrips</em> <em>usitatus</em> (Bagnall), brown stink bug (<em>Riptortus</em> <em>linearis </em>(Fabricius)), green stink bug (<em>Nezara viridula </em>(Linnaeus)), and pod borer (<em>Maruca testulalis </em>(Geyer)). The application of NSP, Virgra, and BeBas, as preventive measures and the application of synthetic pesticides based on schedule effectively were suppressed pest population. In contrast, the application of biopesticides and synthetic pesticides based on ET did not suppress the development of major pests. The application of biopesticide based on ET are safe for the survival of natural enemies. Meanwhile, the application of synthetic pesticides can destroy existing natural enemies. Integrated management of NSP, Virgra, and BeBas, that are applied preventively are potential to be innovative technology for controlling the major mungbean pest to replace synthetic pesticides.</p>

Resumen
The growth properties of cell lines derived from Spodoptera frugiperda (alfalfa looper) and Choristoneura fumiferana (spruce budworm) were investigated. The data demonstrated that the spruce bud worm cell line grew more slowly than the alfalfa looper cell line, and this reduced growth rate appeared to affect the rate of baculovirus replication in infected cells. Trypsinizing the spruce budworm cells or varying the multiplicity of infection did not greatly influence the rate of viral replication. Autographa californica nuclear polyhedrosis virus was able to replicate its DNA and synthesize late and very late proteins in both cell lines but did not produce infectious extracellular virus in the spruce budworm cell line. The replication cycle of C. fumiferana nuclear polyhedrosis virus did not produce late proteins or infectious extracellular virus in the alfalfa looper cells. The results indicate that S. frugiperda cells are nonpermissive for the C. fumiferana nuclear polyhedrosis virus but C. fumiferana cells are semipermissive for the A. californica nuclear polyhedrosis virus, resulting in an abortive infection.Key words: baculovirus, host specificity, AcMNPV, CfMNPV, spruce budworm.

Resumen
A cloned cell line designated Se301, derived from a continuous Se3FH cell line of the beet army worm Spodoptera exigua, showed 10 times greater sensitivity when tested with the plaque assay to a S. exigua nuclear polyhedrosis virus (SeNPV) as compared with the parent cell line. Nearly 100% of Se301 cells were infected with the plaque purified isolate SeNPV-I1 or the wild isolate SeNPV-IW. Plaques were first detected 3–4 days in the Se301 cell line, which was 1–2 days faster than the Se3FH cell line. The size of plaques formed in the Se301 cell line was markedly larger than that of the parental cell line. At 12 h post infection, the production of the extracellular viruses (ECVs) in the Se301 cell line infected with either SeNPV-I1 or SeNPV-IW was 20–40 times greater than that in the Se3FH cell line. In contrast, Se301 cells infected with SeNPV-I1 or SeNPV-IW produced polyhedral inclusion bodies (PIBs) at lower levels compared with Se3FH cells. The isolate SeNPV-I1 consistently produced more ECVs and PIBs in both the Se301 and Se3FH cell lines than the isolate SeNPV-IW.Key words: Spodoptera exigua, nuclear polyhedrosis virus, cloned cell line, increased virus sensitivity, virus production.

Resumen
Inherited sterility has been proposed as a means of suppressing the populations of the corn earworm, Helicoverpa zea (Boddie), and the fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith). If nuclear polyhedrosis viruses could be used to kill larvae, thereby reducing the number of moths in the field populations, fewer moths treated with substerilizing doses of irradiation would need to be released. However, for these two methods to be compatible, the progeny of substerile moths should be no more susceptible to the virus than the progeny of the field populations. The corn earworm nuclear polyhedrosis virus (Elcar™) was bioassayed against corn earworm larvae from untreated moths and larvae from male, female, and male and female moths treated with 100 Gy of irradiation and larvae from male moths treated with 150 Gy of irradiation. The fall armyworm nuclear polyhedrosis virus was bioassayed against fall armyworm larvae from untreated moths and larvae from male moths treated with 100 to 150 Gy of irradiation. There was no significant difference between susceptibility of larvae from untreated moths and larvae from irradiated moths. Thus, the use of nuclear polyhedrosis viruses for control of larvae should be compatible with the release of substerilized moths as part of an integrated pest management approach for area-wide management of the corn earworm and fall armyworm.
