Ghahari, Hassan, Gary A. P. Gibson y Gennaro Viggiani, eds. Chalcidoidea of Iran (Insecta: Hymenoptera). Wallingford: CABI, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.1079/9781789248463.0000.

Texto completo
Resumen
Abstract Within Hymenoptera, the superfamily Chalcidoidea (chalcidoid wasps) is the second largest superfamily after Ichneumonoidea. Because of the preponderance of parasitoid species, Chalcidoidea is one of the most important groups in applied biological control. This book provides a comprehensive, accurate checklists for the chalcidoid fauna of Iran. The species listed in each family chapter include all the species recorded in the literature from Iran through 2019, with one exception as noted in Chapter 10 (Eurytomidae). Each family chapter includes differential characters to distinguish the family, hypothesized phylogenetic relationships with other families, and general biological attributes of the family. Previous cataloguing efforts of the Iranian fauna for the family are summarized, as well as the information included in the checklist of species for the family. This summary information includes the number of species recorded from Iran, any newly recorded species, a comparison of the Iranian fauna with those of adjacent countries, and major host attributes of the family in Iran. Also included for each species record are host records and plant associates in Iran, when known, and additional comments as necessary. The final chapter tabulates the species diversity of Iranian Chalcidoidea by family, the species newly exclude from Iran, the species presently considered as endemic to Iran and the number of species of each family that are known from each of the 31 provinces that comprise Iran. Because of the importance of chalcidoids for biological control of pests in Iran, host information for parasitoid species that is provided throughout the chapters is synthesized in an Appendix at the end of the book.

Resumen
The role of disease in population regulation is often overlooked in ecology and conservation. Due to their diversity, the musteloids host a wide range of pathogens. These include diseases of commercial importance, such Aleutian mink disease virus which impacts mink ranching, or bovine tuberculosis leading to interventions to manage European badgers. Skunks and raccoons are major rabies hosts in North America, and because these small carnivores insinuate themselves into close proximity with people, they can pose substantial zoonotic risks. Musteloids also share diseases between species, such as mustelid herpes virus, canine distemper and infectious hepatitis viruses, along with a range of nematodes and protozoans; presenting a contagion risk when vulnerable musteloids are being conserved or reintroduced. Managing host density, vaccination and host isolation are thus the best tools for managing disease, where we advocate the UN-led ‘One Health approach, aimed at reducing risks of infectious diseases at the Animal-Human-Ecosystem interface

Resumen
The term “dilution effect” describes scenarios where pathogen transmission is reduced as host diversity increases. Theoretical frameworks exist to predict conditions under which dilution effects may arise, with vector-borne diseases (VBDs) being particularly susceptible to host diversity. However, to date, empirical investigation of dilution effects has been restricted to a few temperate VBD systems. We review the potential contribution of dilution effects for VBDs of greatest public health importance in low-income, typically tropical, countries. Using examples, we discuss how the underlying ecology of pathogen and vector species combine to determine the response of the disease system to biodiversity. We review cases demonstrating how manipulation of host-species diversity has altered human exposure risk. We caution that attempts to control VBDs by manipulating host diversity are unlikely to succeed, and may even be detrimental, without having a detailed understanding of the local ecology of the specific VBD and environmental setting.

Krell, Frank-Thorsten. Pleistocene Dung Beetles from MIS 5 at Ziegler Reservoir, Snowmass Village, Colorado (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Aphodiinae). Denver Museum of Nature & Science, 2014. http://dx.doi.org/10.55485/inyl3767.

Texto completo
Resumen
Nine aphodiine dung beetle species are recorded from Pleistocene sediments of the Ziegler Reservoir near Snowmass Village, Colorado, U.S.A. Insect remains from this deposit range from 125,000 to 77,000 yr BP, and are unique in their species richness and in their occurrence at high elevation (2720 meters). Three extant species occur: Aphodius (Dialytodius) decipiens Horn, A. (Planolinellus) vittatus Say, and A. (Planolinoides) duplex LeConte. Six unidentified species are also described, belonging to the genus Aphodius. All species are relatively small coprophagous dwellers known as endocoprids. The faunal richness of this site suggests a speciose dung beetle fauna existed at high elevations in this region, and intimates the importance of this site as one of the richest Pleistocene dung beetle sites in North America.
