Resumen
The article examines the phenomenon of globalization and its impact on the language policy of Spain. The processes of neologization underlying the Spanish language policy are analyzed. It is shown how, in the conditions of the dominant role of the English language, the national languages of Spain resist external pressure in the form of Anglicisms. Purpose. The purpose of the study is a theoretical and practical study of the influence of factors of linguistic globalization on the official languages of Spain. Materials and methods. The texts of modern periodicals of Spain (El País, El Mundo, El ABC, LA Vanguardia) and the data of the explanatory dictionary of the Spanish Academy (Diccionario Real Academia Española) served as practical material for the study. To achieve the purpose of the study, the following methods were applied: analysis of scientific literature, continuous sampling method, method dictionary definitions, descriptive method. Results. As a result of the study, it was revealed that Spanish national languages, influenced by the factors of linguistic globalization and the English language dominating in the international arena, are changing the familiar picture of the world in all spheres of life of modern Spanish society. The analysis of the data obtained showed that the Spanish language policy is not effective enough in the context of the current processes of linguistic globalization. Despite the active resistance to foreign-language borrowings and neologisms of foreign origin, Spanish language policy institutes do not have time to develop appropriate traditional equivalents. Practical implications. The results of the study can be used in lecture courses on lexicology, lexicography, and linguistics, as well as in practical classes on the lexicology of the Spanish language.

Resumen
The present investigation is an exercise in historical lexicology working with a group of voices with the usual coinage of Americanisms and the objective is to examine whether from the diasystem or from synchrony they can be understood, precisely. The methodology consists of two parts: first being a process of collation and lexical filtering with some linguistic tools in Spanish such as dictionaries, linguistic monographs and linguistic corpus and second being strictly lexicological-lexicographical phase, where semantics, polysemy and possible homonymy are explored. The information collected, therefore, comes from the textual level, which is why, most often, found data may contradict Spanish as a fact of architecture or official lexicography. In short, these units are a group of voices neither exemplary or standard nor provincial relative to the standard language.

The language errors could potentially hinder the transmission of information and disturb theconcretization of the act of communication. In the contemporary context, many factors exercise influence on thelanguage especially the social media triggering disregard of the linguistic norms, devaluing the correct use of thelanguage and disrupting the normal flow of communication. These irregularities in the use of the Spanish languageare known as language vices. The subject of this paper is a broad view of the irregularities (that could be of differentgrammatical nature) that could result from the improper use of the Modern Spanish language and encompasses thedefinition, review of the most common types of language vices (pleonasm, solecism, amphibology, barbarism, archaism, and neologism) supported by a series of examples excerpted from relevant sources among whichOrtografía de la lengua Española (RAE:2010). Diccionario panhispánico de dudas (RAE:2005), Gran diccionariode sinónimos, voces afines e incorrecciones (Fernando Corripio, Bruguera, 1979), etc. The purpose of the paper is,in absence of Spanish grammar(s) in Macedonian language and published comparative papers in particular in thefield of lexicology, to fill to some extant the vacuum and shed light on the language vices in the Modern Spanishlanguage, thus arousing the interest of the Macedonian linguists, especially those with knowledge of Spanish forfuture more profound research and their systematization.

Resumen
Phraseological units which include colour names in Spanish language are investigated. The author analyses how color terms may influence on the total meaning of a phraseological unit. The article deals with the national cultural component “colour” in the phraseological units in Spanish language. The subject of the research determines the application of the comparative method. In this connection we use the linguistic facts of some national variants in Spanish language as well as in Ukrainian language. The results of the article confirm the forming of the national symbolism of colour in Spanish under the influence of the extralinguistic factors, transforming the colour into the national cultural component. The research materials and results can be applied in the sphere of such contiguous disciplines as intercultural communication, linguistics, translation theory and practice, studying Spanish by Ukrainian-speaking students, as well as in writing test books and other teaching material on lexicology. Research of colour names in Spanish language with its comparison with Ukrainian colour names shows that phraseological units with colour names are characterized with some similarity. Phraseological knowledge facilitates the reading of political essays as well as works of literature. The process of thinking in the educational progress cannot be overrated. In this learning the images are the material for solving the tasks. These images are phraseological units with colour names. They are the means of figurative images of ambient reality and simultaneously they enrich the intellect and spiritual inner awarenesses of an individual.

AbstractThis article compares the use of calques modelled on anglicisms in different European languages, especially Spanish and German, which do not only show structural differences (e.g. with regard to the use of noun-noun compounds, which are more common in German) but also reflect different attitudes towards English. Aspects covered range from the factors generally favouring the coinage of such replacive forms, to the reasons for the emergence of different types of calques, to variations in their use and challenges concerning their identification. To unravel the main patterns and trends in calquing, this study includes numerous examples from written and oral language, i.e. items of different register affiliation, age, length, and semantic transparency. On a theoretical level, the article incorporates findings from the fields of lexicology, contact linguistics and sociolinguistics.

Resumen
Abstract Applying a sociolinguistic approach to the study of neologisms, this paper discusses the actuation and diffusion of new words in Early Modern English (EModE; 1500–1700) and draws some parallels with word coining in the comparable but more recent period of Early Modern Finnish (EModF; 1810–1880). The success of this exercise ultimately depends on the data and tools available for ascertaining the status of neologisms in a broader synchronic and diachronic context. The use of historical dictionaries and digital databases shows that many words that were earlier considered particular innovations in EModE are now up for re-evaluation. Determining their actual moments of coinage and entry into the language may be beyond historical lexicology and lexicography, but the new tools make it possible to better monitor their provenance and process of diffusion over time.

Resumen
Based on an ontological frame for comparative onomasiological lexicology which embeds the RAIN eventity type as an exponent-shaped activity into a general linguistic ontology as well as an ontology of motion, the words for RAIN in two Germanic and two Romance languages are compared with respect to their semantic and syntactic variability. It turns out that the Germanic forms are more flexible than the Romance forms. English rain has the highest variability: It can be used with eight valencies, a nominal and seven verbal ones, and with five different meanings, and it is the only one to display a valence that combines an expletive subject with a cognate object as well as a causativized eventity meaning. On the other hand only German regnen has a resultativized meaning. The Romance languages too show some internal variance: In allowing both an impersonal construction with a generalized meaning and a source construction, Spanish llover is slightly more flexible than Italian piovere. Finally, an Optimality Theoretic account of the data is adumbrated in terms of three principles: Avoid linking mismatches, Avoid heterogeneity of sentence patterns, and Avoid redundancy.

Resumen
Semantics and pragmatics are two equally necessary operational components that act in a circular and complementary way at all levels of language organization. Languages function as dynamic systems because they are constituted not only by formal and abstract semantic rules, but also by pragmatic rules that co-articulate in verbal activity inherent meaning with practical knowledge and communicative situations. Languages use different techniques for the same function, for example for the apprehension of colors, sounds, smells and tastes. In some techniques such as specific labeling, predominant in wixárika, Spanish and German, the semantic component prevails, organizing in the lexicon extensive paradigms of specific terms that are loaded in memory, while other languages such as miˀphaa give preference to other techniques such as generic labeling based on inferential rules that act according to context. This implies strong consequences for lexicology, typology as well as for translation.

Resumen
Collocation dictionaries are essential in specialized discourse for understanding, production, and translation. Especially translation, which is often undertaken by professionals who are not specialists of the field, is in need of dictionaries with detailed syntactic and semantic information on lexical and semantic links between terms. However, collocation dictionaries are hardly available for general, let alone specialized, discourse. The manual compilation of collocation dictionaries from large corpora is a time consuming and cost-intensive procedure. A (partial) automation of this procedure recently became a high-priority topic in computational lexicography. In this article, we discuss how collocations can be acquired from specialized corpora and labeled with semantic tags using machine-learning techniques. As semantic tags, we use lexical functions from the Explanatory Combinatorial Lexicology. We explore the performance of two different machine-learning techniques, Nearest Neighbor Classification and Tree Augmented Bayesian Classification, testing them on a Spanish law corpus.

Resumen
The aim of this issue of is to bring together investigation into the lexicon in a variety of languages, in a diversity of manifestations – both at the word level and beyond the word level – and from a variety of perspectives, including not only those which focus on how the vocabulary is internally organized, but also those which deal with the role that lexical units and lexical relations play in the organization of other language levels, particularly in the organization of the discourse. These issues are approached from a variety of perspectives that include not only developments in several disciplines of theoretical and descriptive linguistics, particularly in lexicology, phraseology, word formation, discourse analysis, but also in diverse applied disciplines such as translation, foreign language teaching, English for specific purposes and critical discourse analysis. One of the criteria employed in the compilation of the volume was also the coverage of linguistic diversity. In total, six different languages are investigated in the studies selected in this volume: English, German, Spanish, French, Portuguese, Italian. Without claiming exhaustiveness, we consider that the variety of contributions presented here offers an insight into the vigour of current corpus research into phenomena related to the lexicon. Admittedly, the full range of topics, approaches and methodologies developed in this area of research could not fit in a single volume, but a careful selection of studies representing a variety of interesting advances can be representative of significant developments taking place in the field.

Summary This article sets out the sources, both lexicographical and other, used to create the Nuevo Tesoro Lexicográfico del Español (s. XIV–1726). Among these, particular attention is due to the pre-1500 sources, especially the works of Antonio de Nebrija (1444?–1522), because of their importance for subsequent lexicography, including the pioneers of bilingual lexicography who set Spanish alongside another language. Information is also supplied about the number of works and records consulted, the difficulties arising from treating the data, and the method adopted for grouping together variants of the same form. Finally, an indication is given of the interest of the NTLE for the history of lexicography.

Resumen
This article is dedicated to the investigation of the most characteristic peculiarities of the identification mode of certain subcultural representatives compared to the main or dominant culture expression. To this end, the article analyses, firstly, the evolution of the term “culture” and the emergence of the “subculture” phenomenon, the history of the so-called urban tribes formation into a new social phenomenon, as well as the correlations between such concepts as “dominant culture” and “subculture”, “dominant culture” and “counterculture”. Secondly, in the article are described some vestimentary code features and the verbal realization of the identity of bakala, choni and cani subcultures, belonging to the so-called “poligono” groups, numerically superior to other groups composed by marginal young people. From the point of view of the language of these subcultures, they belong to the category of vernacular, based on a mixture of the Andalusian vernacular and a criminal slang. In this regard, the article considers the formation of the slang of similar social groups, the trends in their use of word-formation models and the grammatical design of sentences, as well as the graphical manifestation of their speech features using the examples from video and audio recordings of informants, interviews and blogs of the world youth fashion and showbusiness representatives. The study of a graphic speech representation can be used to investigate tendencies in word reduction or replacement with icons, as well as other features in the language of Internet forums, commentaries on publications and other forms of communication in the Internet. The relevance of this article is in the speech analysis of modern Spanish subcultural representatives that have emerged over two decades and existed in all major cities of Spain, have a certain influence on the speech behavior of politicians and have given new lexical units included in the Royal Spanish Academy dictionary. The article contains not only linguistic, but also extralinguistic material, which can be used in lexicology, linguistic studies, linguoculturology and in the teaching of related disciplines and may be of interest to a wide audience studying Spanish.

Importance. This study considers the comparative method as one of the means of developing multilingual competence in the process of multilingual education of linguistic students. The study reveals the concept of educational multilingualism, as well as the concepts of positive transfer and interference. The importance of this work lies in the fact that it reflects the problems of organizing teaching Spanish as a FL2 on the basis of English as a FL1 and their solution using the comparative method. Materials and Methods. Based on the analysis of English and Spanish language systems, aspects suitable for using the comparative method are identified. The study involved 65 students of Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University 2-4 years of study. Based on the survey results, a set of exercises is developed and presented to linguistic students. Then the respondents completed a survey to evaluate the effectiveness of the exercises and comparative method. Results and Discussion. According to the survey, 81.5 % of students unambiguously declare the effectiveness of the developed exercises, and 18.5 % – about partial effectiveness. Conclusion. Students noted the effectiveness of the exercises, showed interest in the comparative method, and also saw the prospect of having a comparative component in the process of teaching Spanish as a second foreign language based on English.

Resumen
This essay investigates Fray Ramón Pané’s text from 1500 CE, Relación acerca de las antiguëdades de los Indios, within the literary context of the paradoxography. It examines cultural frameworks and general literary knowledge that would have been understood by Pané within the structures of Spanish and Hieronymite societies. This essay compares the framework and content of Pané’s work with the known paradoxographies of Aelian and Aristotle, focusing on the emphasis placed by Pané on transformation via linguistic translation/interpretation and mythological animal representation. Through my analysis of the original text, I outline Pané’s transliteration of Taino mythology and culture, emphasizing the significance of this New World text itself within the paradoxographical genre, a genre that had generally been in disuse long before Europeans arrived in the Caribbean. While I base my analysis in the study of genre, my general focus is the inclusion and importance of transformation and animal lore within Taino culture, and their transliteration into a little-used European genre by a little-known Spanish friar.

Resumen
The cross-cultural researches are becoming more relevant in the last decades. Due to these studies, scientists restore fragments of the linguistic picture of the world of particular nation, learn about rich historical heritage and customs of any nation, reveal its originality, define universal traits for cultures of different peoples and the peculiarities of different languages. The article is devoted to the complex research of phraseological units in the Ukrainian, Russian, English and Spanish languages. Interlinguistic relations are based on the structural and semantic aspects and it promotes identification of cultural peculiarities of phraseological units in these languages. Рhraseology is an integral and the richest part of any language. Studying materials were the Ukrainian, Russian, English and Spanish phraseological units related to the thematic group “work-idleness”. Equivalents of such phraseological units were analysed, as well as the sources of these equivalents, their types and methods of correct translation. The aim of the study is to identify national peculiarities in perception and verbal realization of one of the basic concepts, the “work-idleness” concept. It is achieved by comparing the Ukrainian with Russian, English and Spanish phraseological units. Full equivalents confirm the universality of this concept in Ukrainian, Russian, English and Spanish linguistic cultures. The article presents the comparative analysis of idioms with semantics of “work” — “inactivity, idleness, waste of time”; traced the basic models of idioms formation in different nations in various languages: Ukrainian, Russian, English and Spanish languages. It provides a new scientific in-depth approach to the solution of one of the most complex problems of comparative study of the phraseological material of different languages on the semantic level. Analysing the examples of phraseological units in different languages, the author comes to a conclusion that semantic, pragmatic, syntactic, national and cultural factors play a considerable role in the process of translation. These factors should be taken into account while translating idioms. So, the article deals with two concepts “work”, “idleness”. The subject of the research determines the application of the comparative method while investigating these two concepts in Ukrainian as well as in Russian, English and Spanish languages. The results of the present work can be applied in the sphere of such contiguous disciplines as intercultural communication, linguistics, translation theory and practice, studying English, Russian or Spanish by Ukrainian speaking students, as well as in writing test books and other teaching material on lexicology.

Palabras clave: Lexicología, Lingüística aplicada, Enseñanza de lenguas, Español LE Collocation in Academic Spanish: An Experimental Research Project on the Effects of the Lexical Approach For some decades now, various neurolinguistic studies have highlighted the importance of prefabricated elements in the construction of oral and written discourse among native speakers. This line of research has lead to the development of new and interesting perspectives within many linguistic areas, not least in the field of language teaching, in which theories such as the Lexical Approach appear to be paving the way towards the more effective achievement of second language proficiency. Unfortunately, empirical studies that validate this methodological approach are still lacking. The present article attempts to address this issue, to some extent, by presenting an experimental research proposal focused on the elaboration of a glossary of collocations. This glossary will facilitate the development of a didactic tool through which the effect of explicit instruction of collocations in the production of academic texts can be evaluated. Resumen
Abstract Juan Pérez de Pineda (ca. 1500–1567) was one of Spain’s most prolific reformers, and yet theological analysis of his work often dismisses the originality of his corpus. This article returns to Pérez’s two primary theological treatises to reconsider Pérez’s relationship to Neoplatonism by examining Pérez’s vision of mystical union in the context of consolation narratives. Pérez published his Brief Treatise of Doctrine and Consolatory Epistle from exile in Geneva, in the same year his colleagues were executed in the notorious autos-de-fe often credited with eradicating Protestantism from Spain. Taken together, these works reveal Pérez’s ambivalence towards Neoplatonic imagery, adapting and rejecting language of ascent in his description of mystical union as a present reality, unimpeded by the flesh. Noting a curious absence of Neoplatonic strategies common across humanist, mystical, and Reformed traditions, Pérez’s unique rejection of language of purification of the soul is poised to grant insight, with future study, into the intersections and transformations of Reformation theology in the Spanish milieux.

Data were analyzed from May 2022 to September 2023.ExposuresSelf-reported or electronic health record (EHR)–derived race, ethnicity, and preferred language.Main Outcomes and MeasuresSelf-reported vaccination status and attitudes toward monovalent (wave 1) or bivalent Omicron booster (wave 2) COVID-19 vaccines. Sample- and response-weighted analyses assessed attitudes by vaccination status and 3 race, ethnicity, and language groupings of interest.ResultsThere were 1227 respondents; all identified as female, the mean (SD) age was 31.7 (5.6) years, 356 (29.0%) identified as Black race, 555 (45.2%) identified as Hispanic ethnicity, and 445 (36.3%) preferred the Spanish language. Response rates were 43.5% for wave 1 (652 of 1500 individuals sampled) and 39.5% for wave 2 (575 of 1456 individuals sampled). Respondents were more likely than nonrespondents to be White, non-Hispanic, and vaccinated per EHR. Overall, 76.8% (95% CI, 71.5%-82.2%) reported 1 or more COVID-19 vaccinations; Spanish-speaking Hispanic respondents had the highest weighted proportion of respondents with 1 or more vaccination. Weighted estimates of somewhat or strongly agreeing that COVID-19 vaccines are safe decreased from wave 1 to 2 for respondents who reported 1 or more vaccinations (76% vs 50%; χ21 = 7.8; P < .001), non-Hispanic White respondents (72% vs 43%; χ21 = 5.4; P = .02), and Spanish-speaking Hispanic respondents (76% vs 53%; χ21 = 22.8; P = .002).Conclusions and RelevanceDecreasing confidence in COVID-19 vaccine safety in a large, diverse pregnant and recently pregnant insured population is a public health concern.

Resumen
Introduction. As the world’s largest Spanish-speaking country by area, Argentina has always played an important role in the historical, economic and cultural development of the South American continent. Over the centuries, the toponymic corpus of Argentina consists of European (mainly Hispanic) and autochthonous strata. The Hispanic components in the toponymy of this South American state are a kind of cartographic form of the existence of the Spanish language, a semiotic marker of the presence of Spanish culture in this corner of the world. However, at present, there is no possibility to talk about a detailed study of the Argentine geographic nomenclature. The purpose of the article is to attempt a comprehensive linguistic description of the Hispanic toponymy of Argentina. Material and methods. The conclusions are based on the results of the linguopragmatic analysis carried out by traditional means and modern electronic systems: maps of the country, electronic systems GoogleMaps and GeoNames were used as materials and tools. Results and discussion. The author groups place names of Spanish origin, giving multiple examples, explaining their etymology and identifying metonymic chains. Along with the description of Hispanic anthropotoponyms, religious allusions, zoo- and phytotoponyms, emotionally colored topo-units and geographical names containing numerals, a separate place is given to military toponymy, shift names and doublet toponyms. In addition to Hispanic place names, the share of bilingual and indigenous place names in the total number of place names in the region is determined. The heterogeneity of the forms of geographical names here indicates the clash of civilizations, the heterogeneity of linguistic contacts and the richness of the lexical resources of the local toponymic system. It was found that Hispanic toponyms make up the largest percentage in comparison with autochthonous toponyms and bilingual toponyms of the country. As a result of the study, the Hispanic toponymic layer was divided into groups, the most numerous of which are anthropotoponyms. Conclusion. The resulting structured and described research data contribute to the advancement of digital technologies in onomastic research, and also allow the use of the demonstrated results in the framework of courses in language theory, toponymy, theory of language contacts, migrantology, linguistic studies, lexicology, dialectology, theory of normativity, as well as in teaching Spanish.

Resumen
BackgroundGlobal Asthma Network (GAN) was established in 2012 as a development to the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood to improve asthma care globally.ObjectiveTo survey asthma, allergic rhinitis and atopic dermatitis in primary and secondary school children and to investigate and evaluate its prevalence, severity, management and risk factors in Mexico.MethodsGAN Phase I is a cross-sectional, multicentre survey carried out in 15 centres corresponding to 14 Mexican cities throughout 2016–2019 using the validated Spanish language version of the GAN Phase I questionnaires. The questionnaires were completed by parents of 6–7-year-old primary school pupils (school children) and by 13–14-year-old adolescents.ResultsA total of 35 780 school children and 41 399 adolescents participated. Wheezing ever prevalence was 26.2% (95% CI 25.8% to 26.7%) in school children and 23.9% (95% CI 23.4% to 24.3%) in adolescents. The corresponding frequencies for current wheeze were 10.2% (95% CI 9.9% to 10.5%) and 11.6% (95% CI 11.2% to 11.9%). In school children, the risk factors for current wheeze were rhinitis (OR 4.484; 95% CI 3.915% to 5.134%) and rash symptoms (OR 1.735; 95% CI 1.461% to 2.059%). For adolescents, rhinitis symptoms (OR 3.492; 95% CI 3.188% to 3.825%) and allergic rhinitis diagnosis (OR 2.144; 95% CI 1.787% to 2.572%) were the most significant. For both groups, there was a negative relation with centres’ sea level altitude higher than 1500 m above mean sea level (p<0.005).ConclusionsThe most important risk factors for asthma symptoms in both age groups were the presence of rhinitis and rash symptoms or diagnosis. On the other hand, sea level altitude higher than 1500 metres was a protective factor.

Resumen
Abstract We present ALMA, a new research project aimed at investigating the interaction between language and knowledge practices from AD 1100 to 1500. Our primary question is how Medieval Italian, French, Occitan, Catalan, and Spanish developed into languages of knowledge and scholarship (German Wissen(schafts)sprachen) in permanent opposition to and exchange with the predominant Latin (but also with Arab, Greek, and Hebrew). Focusing on two domains, medicine and law, the project combines linguistics, text philology, and the history of science with the Digital Humanities and ontology engineering. ALMA will create two multi-lingual, domain-specific text corpora by integrating text editions of hitherto unedited manuscripts and incunabula, and digitized printed editions. Our corpus-linguistic exploration of the ALMA corpora will provide the basis for lexical-semantic studies that analyze emerging knowledge networks and the depth of their linguistic representations. We hypothesize that language evolution and the development of more complex linguistic structures will allow for measuring the impact of knowledge practices on medieval vernacular languages. We will trace the dissemination of lexical material across languages, language varieties, cultural spaces, and periods. This will enable us to follow specific vernacular communication channels. We will use cutting-edge technologies to compile, publish, and share our findings, and to model them in the form of historicized ontologies and Linked Data. Our onomasiological, ontology-driven approach will result in the creation of domain models that can be re-used within the Semantic Web. This has great potential to be relevant for researchers from different disciplines.

Intercategorial and Intracategorial Relations in Anthroponymy. The Case of French First Names in France and Spanish First Names in MexicoAbstract When analyzing first names from Montpellier, France, and Tlalnepantla, Mexico, by lexicological means, it becomes evident that there is a constant transit between the different subcategories provided by the linguistic terminology. First names that come from last names which, in turn, come from place names. First names that are also nicknames or ethnonyms. First names which are, at the same time, nouns from the general language. Hypocoristics that become full names, etcetera. This exchange between categories and subcategories seems to be associated with both the etymological and the synchronic or affective meaning. And, above all, with identity, to which given names is an unavoidable component, alongside with the notion of parental project and that of onomastic and cultural heritage. The conclusions to this paper are: a) that the category of names (noun and adjective) is just one (Van Langendonck, 2007; Fabre, 1980) but that b) terminology, in its taxonomic role, is required because it allows to apprehend the object study of onomastics, and more broadly the world in the manner of prototypes, archetypes and stereotypes. Key words: Anthroponomastics; lexicology; terminology; semantics; categorial shift.

Resumen
AbstractThe aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of bullying in its various forms from the perspective of all of the individuals involved (victims, bullies, and witnesses) and to explore its distribution as a function of gender. The study had a correlational design and used a representative sample of 1500 Spanish students attending compulsory secondary education in the academic year 2007–2008. It applied an instrument measuring different types of bullying, taken from the studies conducted by Díaz-Aguado, Martínez, and Martín (2004) and the Defensor del Pueblo (Spanish Ombudsman’s Office)-UNICEF (2007). The findings reveal that all the types of bullying considered take place at school and that there is an inverse relationship between the severity and the prevalence of bullying behaviors, with verbal abuse proving to be the most common type of abusive behavior. Boys are involved in all kinds of bullying incidents as bullies significantly more often than girls are, except in cases involving ‘talking about someone behind their back’; in these situations, girls are involved significantly more often as bullies than boys are. As for victimization, boys are victims of direct physical abuse significantly more often than girls are, while girls are more often the subject of malicious gossip.

Resumen
The description of French borrowings from Spanish in all linguistic axes is still a problem for contemporary lexicology. A sociolinguistic and historical study of Gallicisms is necessary, particularly of germanía, a Spanish diastratic cryptolect from the 15th to the 17th centuries, which can contribute to this interlinguistic overview. Such an analysis also makes it possible to expose the particularities of this sociolect, so characteristic of the Spanish Golden Age, coming from both reality and fiction. In this sense, lexicographical-textual documentation and certain etymological notions are a fundamental tool for analysing the most representative areas of the germanía’s world, namely ruffianesque and picaresque.

AbstractThe study describes the construction and initial validation of a new assessment instrument named EAHU (from the Spanish Escala de Apreciación del Humor, Humor Appreciation Scale, in English). A dimensional proposal is presented, which incorporates funniness and aversiveness of the content and structure of humor. The dimensions are incongruity-resolution, nonsense, sexual, black, man disparagement and woman disparagement humor. The construction strategy for the EAHU is outlined. The development of the EAHU involved using Spanish samples comprising more that 1500 participants altogether. The metric characteristics of the items and the internal structure of the scale appeared to be highly stable across the samples. The psychometric characteristics of the EAHU scales appeared to be satisfactory. There were sex differences only in the content scales, and a relevant role of age was observed in the EAHU scales. An interaction effect was found for sex, age and different type of humor. We conclude that the EAHU is an adequate instrument to assess the content and structure of humor.

Resumen
Introduction: The US has the highest maternal mortality (MM) rate among developed countries with significant disparities between Black, Hispanic, and Native American birthing people and their White counterparts. Missouri ranks among the 10 states with the highest MM. It has been presumed that the general population’s lack of knowledge surrounding the issue and distrust of the medical system both contribute significantly to MM. Thus, suggestions for improving maternal mortality have been centered primarily around education. To date, there has been a paucity of research surrounding the knowledge and perceptions of MM in the general population. This study sought to understand the perceptions of MM among a representative sample of pregnant people in Missouri. Methods: This is an anonymous, cross-sectional survey conducted from May 2022-August 2022 across the state of Missouri. The Missouri Perinatal Quality Collaborative/ Maternal-Child Learning and Action Network (LAN/PQC) iteratively developed a 46-question survey, distributed in both English and Spanish, to elicit opinions of birthing people in Missouri, assessing their knowledge about state-specific maternal mortality issues. The target population included individuals 18 years and older with a Missouri zip code who identified as someone of birthing potential. Those without a Missouri zip code, who identified as male, and not pregnant were excluded. All survey questions were uploaded into a secure database (REDcap) and accessible to participants through a survey link. The survey was pilot tested by placing a QR code and survey link on social media platforms by the authors. Once feasibility was confirmed, an additional survey link was distributed through an email listserv purchased from a data distribution platform (Dynata). Demographic data, including age, race, pregnancy status, number of lifetime pregnancies, number of living children, and preferred language, were recorded. All survey responses were documented without patient identifiers following signed, informed consent. The survey was aimed to sample 1500 respondents online racially representative of the Missouri birthing population. The study was approved by Saint Luke’s Hospital of Kansas City IRB and was designed to follow STROBE guidelines for the reporting of cross-sectional studies. Participants were asked general knowledge about maternal mortality including whether or not they knew it was a public health issue in Missouri, if they knew someone who died as a result of pregnancy, and if they themselves had ever been concerned about dying as a result of pregnancy. These results were reported as “yes” or “no” responses. Qualifying questions to positive responses included whether the perceived rate of maternal mortality in Missouri was high or low, suspected underlying medical and social causes and timeframe, and personal relationship to the decedent in the case of known death. For those who answered positively about concern for dying in pregnancy, qualifying responses were recorded on a Likert scale (1 for not at all concerned, 2 for a little concerned, 3 for somewhat concerned, 4 for very concerned and 5 for extremely concerned). Respondents were also asked to identify certain groups of people according to race, income status, insurance status, urban versus rural place of residence, educational status, and marital status that may suffer disproportionately from maternal deaths. Statistical analysis was performed in SAS 9.4. Descriptive statistics are reported in percentages and counts for categorical outcomes and means ± SD for continuous outcomes. Knowledge questions were analyzed as yes or no responses and reported in frequencies. Perceived etiologies for maternal mortality are reported as nominal data in percentages. Logistic regression was performed utilizing employment status, insurance status, marital status, education attainment, and difficulty with finances as predictors variables. Questions were stratified by age, race, and self-reported zip code. Results: Eighty-five people met inclusion criteria with an average age of 30.4 ± 7.6 and parity of 3.1 ± 2.0. Of those, 65.9% identified as White, 25.9% as Black, 8.2% as Hispanic, 3.5% as Native American, 4.7% as Asian, and 2.4% as Hawaiian Native or Pacific Islander. Over 85% reported awareness that MM was an issue in Missouri, and 59.2% reported they believed those numbers to be high. Thirty percent of people reported knowing someone who had died from a pregnancy-related cause; of those, 73.9% reported that the person who died was a family member or personal friend. Only 21.2% of pregnant people reported not being concerned about dying during their pregnancy. Seventy-five percent of the pregnant cohort reported trusting their medical providers’ recommendations. Discussion: Our study found that over 85% of pregnant people in Missouri are aware of MM, and a majority are aware that the MM rate is high. This contradicts commonly held beliefs that our patients’ lack of knowledge may be an opportunity for our efforts. Our survey also revealed that 75% of patients trust their medical providers despite much blame being placed on distrust of the health care system. Further surveys of health care providers may be helpful to reveal how exactly MM can be improved.
