Resumen
The Late Miocene Sorbas Member of the Sorbas Basin, Almería Province, southeast Spain contains an extensive avian ichnofauna preserved in lagoonal marls. Three distinctive avian ichnotaxa can be identified: Antarctichnus fuenzalidae Covacevich and Lamperein, 1970; Iranipeda millumi n. ichnosp.; and Roepichnus grahami n. ichnogen, n. ichnosp. In common with many other Cenozoic avian ichnofaunas, these traces are associated with shorebirds, including plovers, storks, ducks and/or gulls, respectively. Associated mammalian tracks include possible cat and artiodactyl footprints. The avian tracks are abundant and show a range of behavioural aspects in common with other recorded examples of Cretaceous–Recent shorebird tracks. These include both solitary and group activities consistent with their postulated avian tracemakers.

Abstract Purpose Sorption of organic compounds to soil largely determines their mobility and bioavailability in ecosystems. It is well known that molecular properties of the organic sorbates affect the sorbed amounts and sorption kinetics. But also changes in the hydration status of soils alter the physicochemical and sorptive properties of soil organic matter (SOM), which is the main sorbent for organic compounds in soils. This study elucidates the effects of varying SOM prehydration status on sorption of PAHs and PAH derivatives in peat soil. Materials and methods For sorption experiments, topsoil samples of a peat soil with 51% SOM were adjusted to water contents of 15, 30, and 50% (w/w based on dry soil mass) and conditioned for different water contact times of up to 2 years at one constant water content. Sorption kinetics and isotherms of naphthalene, three naphthalene derivatives, phenanthrene, and pyrene to these samples were investigated in batch experiments. Effects of the sorbates’ properties and SOM hydration on sorption were analyzed. Results and discussion Sorption to the peat soil was nonlinear and varied among sorbates and differently prehydrated soil samples. Sorbate polarizability, molecular volume, and weight increased the sorbed amount. Sorption kinetics were two-phased with a fast and a slow sorbing fraction. Hydroxyl groups in sorbates acting as H-donor or acceptor led to an increase of the slow sorbing fraction. Increasing total water contents, amounts of non-freezable water in SOM, increasing pore sizes, and decreasing hydrophobicity of SOM decreased the total sorbed amount and the fast sorbing fraction while increasing the slow sorbing fraction. The latter effects increased with increasing polarity and dipole moment of the sorbate. The SOM matrix rigidity varied with prehydration status; higher SOM matrix rigidity led to non-ideal sorption processes, namely, higher sorption nonlinearity and slower sorption. Conclusions The study revealed the effects and interplay of SOM prehydration status and molecular properties of the sorbates on sorption of PAHs and PAH derivatives. As sorbed amounts may decrease and become non-ideal upon aging at the presence of water, estimations of the mobility of organic compounds in the environment need to consider SOM prehydration status in high organic soils.

Resumen
From its origins, the concept of desertification has been controversial. The prevailing confusion between two desertification visions, one that considers it as the expansion of deserts and another that emphasizes its anthropogenic component, has been transferred to society. Here we illustrate misunderstandings about desertification using a very illustrative case from the Tabernas-Sorbas Basin (Almeria, Spain), where striking badlands that are often used as an image of desertification coexist with an intensive olive agriculture that is irreversibly deteriorating the only oasis in continental Europe (Los Molinos spring). The olive tree is a traditional Mediterranean dryland crop and until the 1950s only about 200 ha were irrigated in this area. However, the profitability of the crop has caused irrigation to expand to 4400 ha in the last two decades. The process of intensification has been reinforced giving way to super-intensive irrigation, which involves going from 210 to 1550 trees/ha, which in a few years already occupies more than 1500 ha. The effects on the water balance of the aquifer feeding these crops have been severe, and the flow of the Los Molinos spring has gone from more than 40 L/s for the period 1970–2000 to the current 7.28 L/s. Unraveling the mechanisms of land degradation and its main drivers are the first step to propose management actions to achieve a more sustainable use of resources and to combat desertification.

Resumen
AbstractMarine invertebrate borings are very rare in crystalline rocks, providing evidence of particular strategies producers use to colonise these unfavourable substrates. In the Sorbas Basin (Almería, southern Spain), Upper Miocene transgressive successions contain blocks of metamorphic and igneous rocks of the Nevado–Filabride Complex of the Betic Cordillera. Ichnological analysis of the embedded blocks shows the presence of two types of macroborings located in gneiss boulders, revealed to be an extraordinary case worldwide. The most abundant are regular hemispherical depressions ascribed reservedly to the well-known, mostly bivalve boringGastrochaenolites. The second one is a pouch-like depression, tapering downward, elliptical in outline, and clearly different to other non-circular-in-outline, pouch-shaped macroborings. Thus, a new ichnogenus and ichnospeciesCuenulites sorbasensishas been defined. According to the overall shape, an endolithic or semi-endolithic bivalve using chemical means to bore is suggested as the tracemaker. Colonisation could be determined by sea-level coastal dynamics, with decreasing energy during advancing transgression allowing boring, which was then stopped due to supply of fine-grained sediment that killed the borers.

Resumen
Collisional mountain belts commonly develop intramontane basins from mechanical and isostatic subsidence during orogenic development. These frequently display a relict top surface, evidencing a change interval from basin infilling to erosion often via capture or overspill. Such surfaces provide markers that inform on orogenic growth patterns via climate and base level interplay. Here, we describe the top surface from the Sorbas Basin, a key intramontane basin within the Betic Cordillera (SE Spain). The surface is fragmentary comprising high elevation hilltops and discontinuous ridges developed onto the variably deformed final basin infill outcrop (Gochar Formation). We reconstruct surface configuration using DEM interpolation and apply 10Be/26Al cosmonuclides to assess surface formation timing. The surface is a degraded Early Pleistocene erosional pediment developed via autogenic switching of alluvial fan streams under stable dryland climate and base level conditions. Base-level lowering since the Middle Pleistocene focused headwards incision up interfan drainages, culminating in fan head capture and fan morphological preservation within the abandoned surface. Post abandonment erosion has lowered the basin surface by 31 m (average) and removed ~5.95 km3 of fill. Regional basin comparisons reveal a phase of Early Pleistocene surface formation, marking landscape stability following the most recent Pliocene-Early Pleistocene mountain building. Post-surface erosion rate quantification is low and in accordance with 10Be denudation rates typical of the low uplift Betic Cordillera.

Resumen
AbstractA mineralogical study and multivariant geochemical analysis have been carried out to determine the sedimentation processes and the influence of surrounding rocks on sediments. Analyses were made on the clay fraction of sediments and on bulk samples of rocks from nearby reliefs in the Sorbas Basin (SE Spain). Source rocks were identified by statistical analysis of trace elements and by comparison of the crystallographic parameters of phyllosilicates in sediments and supposed sources. Palaeoenvironmental conditions are recorded by specific elements in the clay minerals. The study of the B and Mg content and of the different types of smectites and palygorskite found in distinct areas has permitted a description of these conditions for this Basin. In this way, different types of deposition environment, showing varying degrees of confinement and influence from marine or continental water, have been distinguished.

Resumen
The rapidity of microbial growth as damage agents indicates quality deterioration of food as its substrate. The presence of active coatings on the surface of the food material will affect to both of microbial growth rapidity and food quality deterioration. The objectives of this research were to determine the kinetics of microbial growth and quality deterioration of X. sagittifolium starch-based coated meatballs incorporated with potassium sorbate. Various potassium sorbate concentration onedible coatings were tested in the research. Observation parameters included the numberof microbes, protein content, TVB-N, weight losses, and texture. The results showed that the addition of potassium sorbate significantly affected the number of microbes, TVB-N, and texture. However, it did not significantly affect to the protein content and weight losses of meatballs. The number of microbes increased exponentially with the inhibitionrate of 0.101 times of potassium sorbate concentration, while TVB-N and the texture of meatballs changed linearly with the inhibition rate of 0.584 and 0.036 times of potassium sorbate concentration respectively. The active starch-based edible coatings with 0.6% potassium sorbate incorporated increased the shelf life of meatballs up to 4 days, while themeatballs without coating only lasted less than 1 day. Keywords: Active edible coating, microbial growth kinetics, potassium sorbate ABSTRAKKecepatan pertumbuhan mikrobia sebagai agen kerusakan dapat mengindikasikan kemunduran mutupangan sebagai substratnya.
ABSTRACT Melon fruit which is undergone a minimal process is easy to damage (perishable) with short shelf life. This study aims to determine the effect of coating aloe vera gel with a mixture of ascorbic acid and potassium sorbate on weight loss, pH, and organoleptic of fresh-cut melons. This study using a completely randomized design (CRD consisted of two treatment factors, namely ascorbic acid (0%, 1.5%, and 3%) and potassium sorbate (0%, 0.2% and 0.4%)). The experiment was replicated three times with a storage temperature of 5 ± 2?C. The results showed that ascorbic acid and potassium sorbate significantly affected the weight loss, pH, and organoleptic values ??of fresh-cut melons. Ascorbic acid and potassium sorbate can inhibit weight loss, maintain organoleptic values ??, and reduce the pH value of fresh-cut melons so that the activity of fungal and mold growth is inhibited. Aloe vera gel with the addition of 3% ascorbic acid and 0.2% potassium sorbate was the treatment that gave the best organoleptic value during storage. This combination can maintain the value of color and texture up to day 14 and maintain aroma until day 10.
