Texto completoThis thesis deals with the strategies in the works of E. T. A. Hoffmann and Pu Songling that are used to arrange the fantasy elements. It examines the basic settings of the environments and social backgrounds as presented in several works by Hoffmann and by Pu Songling. It also investigates and compares the various modes of presentation considering the adventures of the protagonists in these selected works by a German and by a Chinese author. It demonstrates that, although both authors tend to use fantasy elements as an important part in their narration each, they organize them differently. Hoffmann first puts his characters into a daily life background and then constantly brings fantasy events to them in order to arouse the feeling of amazement and to romanticize the world. Pu Songling uses elements of fantasy power to create a paradise that is like an idealized version of the human world. By juxtaposing the two authors, this thesis argues that both Hoffmann and Pu Songling play significant but also quite different roles in the transition process from traditional tales with fantasy elements to modern fantasy fictions in their own traditions. Hoffmann inherits but also makes some unique and remarkable innovations to the literary heritage of German Romanticism; Pu Songling modifies the usual pattern of zhiguai and chuanqi to achieve better art effect. Hoffmann’s unique style of intertwining reality with fantasy has influenced many modern writers, including Herman Hesse. Pu Songling’s creation of a secular paradise and the promotion of qing (a Chinese notion that represents emotion and love) may also be seen as the precursor for later works such as Dream of the Red Chamber.

Texto completoThe research on the satire in the liaozhai zhiyi of pu songling is undertaken through three approches; biographical, historical and rhetorical. The biographical approch allows us to confirm the identification of the frustrated heroes with the author. The comparative study between some stories of pu songling and those of the other authors helps reveal the originality of pu songling. This originality leads us to the more detailed study of the rhetorical figures with which our author hammers out his irony. The extension of our study to works, other than le liaozhai, of pu songling gives us the final confirmation of our observations

Texto completoThis thesis is based on the major work of Pu Songling, a Chinese author from the XVIIth century. The “Liaozhai zhiyi” (Strange stories from a Chinese studio) was written from myths tales and notes, it is close to ethnography. In our analysis, we will emphasize the significant elements of his critical analysis of social facts of his era. Our hypothesis is that Pu Songling’s work, although it is a literary work widely famous for embroiding real facts with the fantastic and the strange, is also, in fact, an anthropological document on China’s XVIIth century. This era is characterized by the overthrow of the Ming dynasty (1368-1644) and its replacement by the mandchu nomads who founded the Qing dynasty (1644-1911). This event brought enormous upheavals which were described critically by Pu Songling in all his work which is a precious testimony of this period. This study is written from the original text (not from the Chinese commented editions or on the translations and commentaries in Western languages) which helps bring out the precious main anthropological themes of this literary work

Texto completoThe Liaozhai zhiyi (Strange chronicles from Leisure Studio) by Pu Songling (1640-1715) is one of the works of classical Chinese literature most translated into French. This dissertation studies, in a comparative framework, the twenty-two translations of Pu Songling's work into French that have been published since the end of the 19th century. After drawing up a complete inventory of these translations, published either in book form or in periodicals, the argument focuses on the relationship between these different versions, their continuities and discontinuities, providing an account of how Pu Songling's masterpiece was introduced to French readers. The following parts are detailed studies of concrete translation and adaptation techniques and devices. Based on a large range of examples, they highlight certain recurring features of French translations of Liaozhai zhiyi. These features are subsequently examined as to their representative nature within the wider field of Sino-French literary translations. In order to clarify the theoretical assumptions inherent in the critical readings of translations, these readings are examined against the background of various fundamental aesthetic and literary problems, which inform our understanding of translation as a particular mode of transforming human discourse

Texto completoThis thesis explores and rethinks female identity across a range of representations and experiences in Young Adult (YA) literature. In understanding female identity as a complex and multifaceted concept, I address enduring social issues that shape or restrict the female experience, including how the female is read, performed, and received. This thesis is comprised of two parts: the exegesis, which offers critical analysis to deconstruct historical and contemporary representations of female identity and experience in YA novels, and the creative work, a YA novel which puts these ideas into practice. Drawing on the established relationship between fairy tale, gender, and trauma, this thesis posits that the retold fairy tale can be repurposed for trauma recovery in a manner which resonates with female characters/identities in YA literature. Using non-linear modes of storytelling and applying the structure of Indigenous Songlines my creative work responds to literary criticism and a close reading of a range of contemporary YA texts. My research reads the gendered trauma inherent in fairy tale as mirroring, or symbolising, the female experience of trauma stemming from living in a patriarchal world. This is realised in the development of an interrelated, entangled narrative or dialogue that crosses genre and generation to privilege a metafictional sisterhood/sistahood as mode of recovery, forming a map of femaleness by which to navigate and survive. Female identity is examined through several key areas of focus including female sexuality, control, and trauma. Female sexuality refers to an exploration of the experience and restriction of female pleasure and desire throughout the genre; empowerment and agency; queer desire; and body image and the relationship with the physical self. This intersects with modes of control, including heteronormative or patriarchal social demands and expectations that shape or restrict identity; enforced silencing; literal and figurative possession; and domination of the body and spirit. I study and later revise these notions through a creative lens that incorporates emerging and recognisable tropes of the paranormal genre and the fairy tale, utilising them as analogies of contemporary social issues. This thesis demonstrates that there are new avenues for female identity and trauma recovery available in YA literature by building on the relationship between fairy tale and YA literature, offering spaces of empowerment and modes of survival.

This thesis is based on the Intimate friend writings of Liaozhai Zhiyi of Pu Songling. It starts from the concept of Intimate friend, then focused on Pu’s personal perspective about Intimate friend and the interaction in Liaozhai Zhiyi, and finally analyzes its intention and its meaning. The research is approximately in three different progresses. First, through the historical background and development, we try to understand how Pu’s personal perspectives about Intimate friend form, and the meaning of pluralism and ambiguity of Intimate friend. Second, by describing Intimate friend chapters in Liaozhai Zhiyi, Intimate friend relationship can be predominated through interaction of imagine subject and object projection. Third, integrating above two progresses, Pu’s life experience and Intimate friend chapters are hints about understanding Pu’s conscious creative intent, and unconscious subject to convey the deep desire. There are some differences of this thesis and the former thesis: 1. this is the first thesis which tries to distinguish the concept of friend and Intimate friend. To clarify the essence of Intimate friend, and a relation in the period of " being known by ( I ) and the knower ( other ) " two aspects to establish the relationship between subject and object. Use Lacan’s mirror stage as, so each other can be the image relationship of reflect and projection. It is worthy to Get more possible interpretation, and build a universal Intimate friend concept.

My comparative study of the love theme as expressed in Ann Radcliffe’s The Mysteries of Udolpho and Pu Songling’s love tales from Strange Tales of Liaozhai consists of five chapters. Chapter One proposes to discuss the comparative theme of love in two works, based on Radcliffe and Pu’s innovation of the supernatural literary tradition, as well as their similar emphasis on personal history in love stories, so as to reflect the communal history. Their selective works are also briefly introduced, too. Chapter Two concentrates on the thematic “patterns” of love, to identify the early amatory pattern of static characters in eastern and western literary traditions, which can be presented as “Knight-Lady” and “Scholar-Beauty” patterns. My argument is that Radcliffe and Pu’s adaptations not only emphasize the companionate (vs. arranged) marriage, but also elevate the heroine’s status in the power structure of courtship. Chapter Three’s focal point is the meanings of eastern-western “settings” in amatory stories. Freudian psychoanalysis helps to identify, in general, life and death drives in Udolpho’s “Eden” and “Caslte,” and Liaozhai’s “Fairyland” and “the Graveyard and the Ruined Monastery.” Chapter Four presents the authorial portrayal of heroines in English and Chinese Cultures as the autonomous other under the patriarchal power structure: “opened but oppressed victim” or “benefactors” through the alienated powers of “reason” and “transformation.” My final chapter summarizes my thesis.

The classics will be reinterpreted by an introduction of new ideas, and thus bringing innovations to the academia. Liaozhai zhiyi as the masterpiece of classical Chinese novels contains multiple meanings in its text. This thesis, inspired by theories such as structuralism and intertextuality, will adopt a novel methodology, namely spatial narration in initiating a discussion. Through interactive relationships among characters and among events, this thesis reveals pluralistic meanings of text while at the same time illustrating the process of constructing implied messages.
The research subjects of this thesis are different structural relationships in Liaozhai zhiyi. And this thesis is divided into five chapters, of which the first is introduction, summarizing previous scholarly research findings of and working out the concept of spatial narration as the main methodological concept and hence establishes research premise and context. Chapter two utilizes plot and human-fox relationship in the human-fox love story as focus, aims at discussing rules of narration formulated in Liaozhai zhiyi. Chapter three mainly uses interactions between the immortals and mortals to reveal author’s entailed messages and implied aesthetic standards (or standard of appreciation) in between intercommunication and obstruction of the immortals and mortals. Chapter four breaks though mere textual analysis, adopts the perspective of intertextuality to perceive Liaozhai zhiyi’s absorption and transformation of the Story of Liu and Ruan’s meeting with fairy maiden by chance. The final chapter intersects with the setting of double lovers to discuss the aesthetic principles of parallelism observed by Pu Songling and structure of narration constructed, and therefore explicating implied messages behind structure.

From early 1922 to late 2018, the number of adaptions of Strange Tales from Liaozhai (聊齋志異), including films and TV series, is up to 141. Among them, a short story by the name of Xiao Cui (小翠) has been adapted at least ten times. In terms of adaptions of Strange Tales from Liaozhai, Painted Skin (畫皮) is the first one which is academically discussed most frequently, and Xiao Cui, the second one. However, there is a lack of Xiao Cui-related researches. Accordingly, the study aims at exploring the trend in the adaptations of Xiao Cui in Strange Tales from Liaozhai. The interdisciplinary study is in the hope of integrating literature and industry to create synergy effect. As the audience are immersed in the classic Chinese literature with an aid of state-of-the-art technology, it can be conducive to economy and in the meanwhile people nowadays pay attention to beauty of Chinese literature with diverse presentations and to the value of arts in adaptations of classic novels. As for texts development and its adaptations of Strange Tales from Liaozhai, the study includes the author’s motivation, critiques by critics in Qing dynasty, development of different versions, current situation, potential quality of its adaptions, explanations for motivations of its adaptations in the past and at present, and lastly three-phase overview of development of adaptations of Strange Tales from Liaozhai. Furthermore, Xiao Cui is analysed for its artistic and conceptual aspects. On the other hand, through comparisons among different versions of its adaptations, different sources of its texts can be traced back. Besides, changed and unchanged narrative structure, transformed and invented characters, and similarities and differences of content are all dissected with illustrations.

The ghost cultures exist in the world among various nationalities for decades. Each nationality has its peculiar cognition about ghost. This thesis uses Nikolai Gogol’s ‘Evenings on a Farm Near Dikanka’ and Pu Songling’s ‘LiaoZhai Zhiyi’ (also strange stories from a Chinese Studio or Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio or Strange Tales of Laiozhai) to demonstrate the different meanings of ghosts and demons between the Russian and Chinese cultures. There are total of 8 stories in the“Evenings on a Farm near Dikanka”, and 496 in the “Liaozhai Zhiyi”. We take the stories that include “the unclean spirit” as samples; first inquires the charactoristics, follow by using the plots and events to support the purpose of comparsion. With the ‘Comparative Literature Theory’ as foundation, we compare the literatures using ‘Paralle Study’ through the method of Thematolagy. The thesis is divided five chapters. The first chapter is the introduction, includes the motive and the goal for the research, as well as the materials and the modern research survey, the method and the construction, the range of study and the limit and anticipated result for the research.
