Resumen
During the early 1980s the Warlpiri at Yuendemu, a remote Aboriginal community in Central Australia, began their own experiments in local television and radio production. This was prior to the launch of the AUSSAT satellite in 1985 which brought broadcast television and radio to remote Australia for the first time. There was concern amongst remote Aboriginal communities, as well as policy makers, that the imposition of mass media without consultation could result in permanent damage to Aboriginal culture and language. As a result, a policy review 'Out of the Silent Land' was published in 1985 and from that developed the Broadcasting in Remote Aboriginal Communities Scheme (BRACS) which allowed communities to receive radio and television from the satellite. BRACS also provided the option to turn off mainstream media and insert locally produced material. This study of the Warlpiri at Yuendemu has found that, since the original experiments, they have enthusiastically used modern communication technology including radio, video making, locally produced television, and, more recently, on-line services. The Warlpiri have adapted rather than adopted the new technology. That is they have used modern communications technology within existing cultural patterns to strengthen their language and culture rather than to replace traditional practices and social structures. The Warlpiri Media Association has inspired other remote broadcasters and is now one of eight remote media networks that link to form a national network via the National Indigenous Media Association of Australia. The Warlpiri have actively adapted modern communication technology because it is to their advantage. The new technology has been used to preserve culture and language, to restore, and possibly improve, traditional communications and to provide employment and other opportunities for earning income. It appeals to all age groups, especially the elders who have retained control over broadcasts and it also provides entertainment.

Resumen
This thesis recognises the great significance of 'walkabout' as a major trading tradition whereby the Dreaming paths and songlines formed major ceremonial routes along which goods and knowledge flowed. These became the trade routes that criss-crossed Australia and transported religion and cultural values. The thesis also highlights the valuable contribution Aboriginal people made in assisting the European explorers, surveyors, and stockmen to open the country for colonisation, and it explores the interface between Aboriginal possession of the Australian continent and European colonisation and appropriation. Instead of positing a radical disjunction between cultural competencies 'before' and 'after', the thesis considers how European colonisation of Australia (as with other colonial settings) appropriated Aboriginal competence in terms of the landscape: by tapping into culinary and medicinal knowledge, water and resource knowledge, hunting, food collecting and path-finding. As a consequence of this assistance, Aboriginal Dreaming tracks and trading paths also became the routes and roads of colonisers. This dissertation seeks to reinstate Aboriginal people into the historical landscape of Australia. From its beginnings as a footnote in Australian history, Aboriginal society, culture, and history has moved into the preamble, but it is now time to inscribe Aboriginal people firmly in the body of Australian history.

Resumen

This thesis deals with the strategies in the works of E. T. A. Hoffmann and Pu Songling that are used to arrange the fantasy elements. It examines the basic settings of the environments and social backgrounds as presented in several works by Hoffmann and by Pu Songling. It also investigates and compares the various modes of presentation considering the adventures of the protagonists in these selected works by a German and by a Chinese author. It demonstrates that, although both authors tend to use fantasy elements as an important part in their narration each, they organize them differently. Hoffmann first puts his characters into a daily life background and then constantly brings fantasy events to them in order to arouse the feeling of amazement and to romanticize the world. Pu Songling uses elements of fantasy power to create a paradise that is like an idealized version of the human world. By juxtaposing the two authors, this thesis argues that both Hoffmann and Pu Songling play significant but also quite different roles in the transition process from traditional tales with fantasy elements to modern fantasy fictions in their own traditions. Hoffmann inherits but also makes some unique and remarkable innovations to the literary heritage of German Romanticism; Pu Songling modifies the usual pattern of zhiguai and chuanqi to achieve better art effect. Hoffmann’s unique style of intertwining reality with fantasy has influenced many modern writers, including Herman Hesse. Pu Songling’s creation of a secular paradise and the promotion of qing (a Chinese notion that represents emotion and love) may also be seen as the precursor for later works such as Dream of the Red Chamber.

Resumen
Pu Songling is well known for his recurrent failure to progress up through the civil service examination system, despite repeatedly taking the provincial level exam over a time-span of forty years. Nevertheless, he was able to produce a highly acclaimed work of literature, his monumental anthology of short stories, the Strange Tales of Liaozhai (Liaozhai zhiyi), together with a large volume of poetry, plays and other writings. My thesis considers the dichotomy between his lack of worldly success in a scholastic career, and his evident literary genius, within the context of an idealisation of innocence and childlike purity. The sixteenth and seventeenth centuries saw what has been described as a “cult of the child” develop in many spheres of Chinese writing. Idealisation of childlikeness and innocence is exemplified by the influential essay “On the childlike mind” (tongxin shuo) by Li Zhi (1527-1602). For those who subscribed to views such as Li’s, genuineness, spontaneity and idealism were venerated, and worldly wisdom, cunning and falseness were despised. This naturally appealed to the growing number of literati like Pu Songling who, trapped within the stultifying examination system, were unable to fulfil their Confucian vocation and thus were rendered socially redundant. The contradiction between Pu’s ideals and the reality in which he finds himself is reflected in his creative writing. By idealising naive innocence and purity, in keeping with contemporary trends of literati thought, Pu is able to vent his frustration. In this thesis I consider three aspects of childlikeness in Pu’s writings: fantasy, naiveté and folly.

The research on the satire in the liaozhai zhiyi of pu songling is undertaken through three approches; biographical, historical and rhetorical. The biographical approch allows us to confirm the identification of the frustrated heroes with the author. The comparative study between some stories of pu songling and those of the other authors helps reveal the originality of pu songling. This originality leads us to the more detailed study of the rhetorical figures with which our author hammers out his irony. The extension of our study to works, other than le liaozhai, of pu songling gives us the final confirmation of our observations

This thesis is based on the major work of Pu Songling, a Chinese author from the XVIIth century. The “Liaozhai zhiyi” (Strange stories from a Chinese studio) was written from myths tales and notes, it is close to ethnography. In our analysis, we will emphasize the significant elements of his critical analysis of social facts of his era. Our hypothesis is that Pu Songling’s work, although it is a literary work widely famous for embroiding real facts with the fantastic and the strange, is also, in fact, an anthropological document on China’s XVIIth century. This era is characterized by the overthrow of the Ming dynasty (1368-1644) and its replacement by the mandchu nomads who founded the Qing dynasty (1644-1911). This event brought enormous upheavals which were described critically by Pu Songling in all his work which is a precious testimony of this period. This study is written from the original text (not from the Chinese commented editions or on the translations and commentaries in Western languages) which helps bring out the precious main anthropological themes of this literary work

Resumen
The construction of Songlin rock-filled concrete gravity dam, located in the Yunnan province, China began in the end of 2015. In this master thesis the finite element method (FEM) based software Abaqus has been used to perform a computational analysis on tension stresses, compression stresses and sliding stability for static conditions. One overflow section and one non-overflow section of the dam have been analysed. The results of the analysis have been evaluated by comparing with Chinese standards for dam safety and is intended to help engineers with making decisions in the construction process of the dam. The measured compressive stress values of both the overflow and non-overflow section are not evaluated to be within safe levels, further evaluation is required to ensure the safety of the dam. The dam is considered to be safe from vertical tension in the analysed region, however an extended evaluation including the whole dam base is recommended. The analysed cross-sections for sliding stability can be considered safe, but further analysis is required to make a conclusion of the sliding stability of the full dam base.

The Liaozhai zhiyi (Strange chronicles from Leisure Studio) by Pu Songling (1640-1715) is one of the works of classical Chinese literature most translated into French. This dissertation studies, in a comparative framework, the twenty-two translations of Pu Songling's work into French that have been published since the end of the 19th century. After drawing up a complete inventory of these translations, published either in book form or in periodicals, the argument focuses on the relationship between these different versions, their continuities and discontinuities, providing an account of how Pu Songling's masterpiece was introduced to French readers. The following parts are detailed studies of concrete translation and adaptation techniques and devices. Based on a large range of examples, they highlight certain recurring features of French translations of Liaozhai zhiyi. These features are subsequently examined as to their representative nature within the wider field of Sino-French literary translations. In order to clarify the theoretical assumptions inherent in the critical readings of translations, these readings are examined against the background of various fundamental aesthetic and literary problems, which inform our understanding of translation as a particular mode of transforming human discourse

Resumen
The present work is an essay to answer an enquiry into the significance of making translations of classical Chinese works into English in the twenty-first century. This question grew out of an interdisciplinary investigation into Pu Songling’s (1640-1715) Liaozhai zhiyi and its English translations, which is aimed at a comprehensive and systematic re-reading of the collection, a diachronic understanding of its English translations, and an in-depth analysis of John Minford’s version published in the Penguin Classics series. All these objects of enquiry are in essence concerned with the interpretation of the anthology. This thesis is composed of five chapters, beginning with an introduction that sets the scene for the study. It equips the reader with a fundamental grasp of the text and literary context of Liaozhai zhiyi. It gives, too, an overview of the current approaches in academia, in both Chinese and English speaking communities, to Pu Songling’s magnum opus. What follows deals with the nature of Liaozhai zhiyi. Whilst it has been generally taken for granted that it is a collection of morally exemplary fictional short stories, my study points out that Liaozhai zhiyi is in fact a work that thematically defies categorisation. Any attempts to put it in a box are liable to challenges. In response to this problem, a three-tiered conical model has been put forward with a view to approaching the compendium comprehensively and systematically. The third chapter seeks to look for any common features that run through the English versions of Liaozhai zhiyi produced over the past two hundred years or so. From an analysis of the titles selected and the purposes of their stories proclaimed, it is discovered that the translators have revolutionised the nature of the book. Together with the Chinese editors of Chinese editions of selected tales of Liaozhai zhiyi, they have shaped today’s distorted understanding of Pu Songling’s finest work. The fourth chapter is a textual analysis of John Minford’s translation of Liaozhai zhiyi published in the Penguin Classics series in 2006. Whilst his work is highly readable in idiomatic English and contains a great many examples of domestication, there are actually marked traces of foreignization at the same time. Instead of exporting Chinese culture to the West, Minford engaged himself in the production of world literature by breaking the language barrier of Liaozhai zhiyi by virtue of translation. The last chapter is an attempt to explore the significance of making translations of classical Chinese works into English in the twenty-first century. It is argued that putting classical works of Chinese into English in our present epoch is not only a mere cultural export of things Chinese, but also an engagement in the current ideological trend of the West by complementing their stress on human’s self-autonomy, an idea which began to emerge as a result of the Western Enlightenment Movement.

Travers, Nicholas. "Going too far : travel lying in Bruce Chatwin’s In Patagonia and The Songlines". Thesis, 2002. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/12231.

Texto completo
Resumen
This thesis looks at two travel books by Bruce Chatwin, In Patagonia (1977) and The Songlines (1987). Both occupy an ambiguous generic ground between fiction and non-fiction, yet critics have tended to oversimplify this key issue when discussing Chatwin's work. Responses to Chatwin's narratives have been unproductively polarized: some critics sweepingly accuse the author of "lying"; others over-intellectualize Chatwin's narrative strategies and celebrate the artistic achievement of his boundary-crossing "fictions." These two perspectives unsatisfactorily limit the debate about Chatwin's lies, and about travel writing generally. This thesis takes a middle ground, refusing the premise that Chatwin is a neo-colonial liar, and the proposition that he is an artist fictionalizing his experience to better express its complex truth. By attempting to understand Chatwin's lying/fictions more broadly, the thesis reads Chatwin's two major tracts closely - The Songlines in Chapter One and In Patagonia in Chapter Two - with an eye for narrative techniques and the author's preoccupations. Drawing on the biographical work of Nicholas Shakespeare, Susannah Clapp, and Nicholas Murray, travel literature theory and criticism, autobiography theory, ethnography, historiography, interviews, and memoirs, this thesis demonstrates that a single theoretical perspective cannot account for Chatwin's lies, but that a different kind of reading strategy will do so. Successive questions ask: What does Chatwin's lying consist of? What motivates those lies? What are the implications of his lies? This mode of critical reading acknowledges the problematics of lying within a non-fictional framework; it also elucidates the way Chatwin's fictionalizing contributes to a larger narrative design. The thesis concludes by addressing Chatwin's belated position in the history of European travel writing. A balanced critical approach, that seeks and interrogates the motivations underpinning Chatwin's lies, reveals him to be unwilling to move beyond a neo-colonialist practice of imposing fantasies upon foreign cultures. Unlike other belated travellers, Chatwin, through his self-representation as well as his representations of other characters and places, claims possession of his experience by exuberantly heightening its features. To a large extent Chatwin does not conceal his pleasure in fictionalizing, but rather displays a Camp delight in excess. Ultimately, however, Chatwin's overt playfulness cannot disguise his desire to conform characters to a naive fantasy of finding freedom elsewhere.

Herb, Annika Josephine. "All the voices in our head: exploring female identity by reimagining the fairy tale and the young adult novel". Thesis, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/1959.13/1385087.

Resumen
Research Doctorate - Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
This thesis explores and rethinks female identity across a range of representations and experiences in Young Adult (YA) literature. In understanding female identity as a complex and multifaceted concept, I address enduring social issues that shape or restrict the female experience, including how the female is read, performed, and received. This thesis is comprised of two parts: the exegesis, which offers critical analysis to deconstruct historical and contemporary representations of female identity and experience in YA novels, and the creative work, a YA novel which puts these ideas into practice. Drawing on the established relationship between fairy tale, gender, and trauma, this thesis posits that the retold fairy tale can be repurposed for trauma recovery in a manner which resonates with female characters/identities in YA literature. Using non-linear modes of storytelling and applying the structure of Indigenous Songlines my creative work responds to literary criticism and a close reading of a range of contemporary YA texts. My research reads the gendered trauma inherent in fairy tale as mirroring, or symbolising, the female experience of trauma stemming from living in a patriarchal world. This is realised in the development of an interrelated, entangled narrative or dialogue that crosses genre and generation to privilege a metafictional sisterhood/sistahood as mode of recovery, forming a map of femaleness by which to navigate and survive. Female identity is examined through several key areas of focus including female sexuality, control, and trauma. Female sexuality refers to an exploration of the experience and restriction of female pleasure and desire throughout the genre; empowerment and agency; queer desire; and body image and the relationship with the physical self. This intersects with modes of control, including heteronormative or patriarchal social demands and expectations that shape or restrict identity; enforced silencing; literal and figurative possession; and domination of the body and spirit. I study and later revise these notions through a creative lens that incorporates emerging and recognisable tropes of the paranormal genre and the fairy tale, utilising them as analogies of contemporary social issues. This thesis demonstrates that there are new avenues for female identity and trauma recovery available in YA literature by building on the relationship between fairy tale and YA literature, offering spaces of empowerment and modes of survival.

This MA thesis is focused on discovering the literary motif of journey in selected works defined by Australia. These works also share the interest in shaping Australian identity. A socio-historical background of colonisation and the first settlement in Australia is provided and the key terms of cultural anthropology are further elaborated on. The thesis depicts traditional Aboriginal culture and focuses especially on its earthbound philosophy. Special attention is paid to the differences among various literary approaches towards the subject matter, to the application of cultural anthropology findings, to the depiction of clashes between different cultures and possibilities of their reconciliation. Furthermore, the works of selected authors are closely characterised from the point of view of their degree of authenticity and the genre specifics. Various treatments of the literary motif of journey are compared and critically analysed. Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)

This thesis is based on the Intimate friend writings of Liaozhai Zhiyi of Pu Songling. It starts from the concept of Intimate friend, then focused on Pu’s personal perspective about Intimate friend and the interaction in Liaozhai Zhiyi, and finally analyzes its intention and its meaning. The research is approximately in three different progresses. First, through the historical background and development, we try to understand how Pu’s personal perspectives about Intimate friend form, and the meaning of pluralism and ambiguity of Intimate friend. Second, by describing Intimate friend chapters in Liaozhai Zhiyi, Intimate friend relationship can be predominated through interaction of imagine subject and object projection. Third, integrating above two progresses, Pu’s life experience and Intimate friend chapters are hints about understanding Pu’s conscious creative intent, and unconscious subject to convey the deep desire. There are some differences of this thesis and the former thesis: 1. this is the first thesis which tries to distinguish the concept of friend and Intimate friend. To clarify the essence of Intimate friend, and a relation in the period of " being known by ( I ) and the knower ( other ) " two aspects to establish the relationship between subject and object. Use Lacan’s mirror stage as, so each other can be the image relationship of reflect and projection. It is worthy to Get more possible interpretation, and build a universal Intimate friend concept.

Resumen
This dissertation looks beyond the prevailing view of Pu Songling’s (1640-1715) Liaozhai zhiyi as an undisputed classic of Chinese literature, positing that much of the work’s cultural relevance and popular appeal derives from its status as “minor discourse” rooted in the tradition of the ghost tale. The first half of the dissertation examines the ghosts depicted within Liaozhai, reconnecting their tamed and feminized images with their dark and anarchic origins. The second half studies the reception of Liaozhai, chronicling the book’s cultural ascension from xiaoshuo, in the original sense of a minor form of discourse fraught with generic and ideological tensions, to a major work of fiction (xiaoshuo in its modern sense). However, the book’s canonical status remains unsettled, haunted by its heterogeneous literary and cultural roots. The Introduction reviews current scholarship on Liaozhai, justifying the need to further investigate the relationship between popular perceptions of Liaozhai and the Chinese notion of ghosts. Chapter One delineates Pu Songling’s position in late imperial ghost discourse and examines how the ghost tale reflects his ambivalence toward being a Confucian literatus. Chapter Two reads Pu Songling’s “The Painted Skin” in conjunction with its literary antecedents, demonstrating that Pu’s uses of both zhiguai and chuanqi modes are essential for the exploration of the ghost’s critical and creative potential. Chapter Three takes up the issues of genre, canon and ideology in the “remaking” of the book by Qing dynasty critics, publishers and commentators, a process in which Liaozhai gains prestige but Liaozhai ghosts become aestheticized into objects of connoisseurship. Chapter Four looks at the ruptures in modern ghost discourse that paradoxically create new vantage points from which Liaozhai regains its “minor” status, most notably in Hong Kong ghost films. The Conclusion revisits “The Painted Skin,” a Liaozhai story that exemplifies the complex cultural ramifications of the ghost. The dissertation combines a study of Liaozhai’s textual formation and its subsequent history of reception with a dialogic inquiry into the ghost, which occupies a highly contested field of cultural discourse, functioning variously as a psychological projection, a token of belief, a literary motif and an aesthetic construction.

My comparative study of the love theme as expressed in Ann Radcliffe’s The Mysteries of Udolpho and Pu Songling’s love tales from Strange Tales of Liaozhai consists of five chapters. Chapter One proposes to discuss the comparative theme of love in two works, based on Radcliffe and Pu’s innovation of the supernatural literary tradition, as well as their similar emphasis on personal history in love stories, so as to reflect the communal history. Their selective works are also briefly introduced, too. Chapter Two concentrates on the thematic “patterns” of love, to identify the early amatory pattern of static characters in eastern and western literary traditions, which can be presented as “Knight-Lady” and “Scholar-Beauty” patterns. My argument is that Radcliffe and Pu’s adaptations not only emphasize the companionate (vs. arranged) marriage, but also elevate the heroine’s status in the power structure of courtship. Chapter Three’s focal point is the meanings of eastern-western “settings” in amatory stories. Freudian psychoanalysis helps to identify, in general, life and death drives in Udolpho’s “Eden” and “Caslte,” and Liaozhai’s “Fairyland” and “the Graveyard and the Ruined Monastery.” Chapter Four presents the authorial portrayal of heroines in English and Chinese Cultures as the autonomous other under the patriarchal power structure: “opened but oppressed victim” or “benefactors” through the alienated powers of “reason” and “transformation.” My final chapter summarizes my thesis.

"《聊齋誌異》的空間敍事: Spatial Narration of Liaozhai zhiyi". 2014. http://library.cuhk.edu.hk/record=b6116503.

Resumen
The classics will be reinterpreted by an introduction of new ideas, and thus bringing innovations to the academia. Liaozhai zhiyi as the masterpiece of classical Chinese novels contains multiple meanings in its text. This thesis, inspired by theories such as structuralism and intertextuality, will adopt a novel methodology, namely spatial narration in initiating a discussion. Through interactive relationships among characters and among events, this thesis reveals pluralistic meanings of text while at the same time illustrating the process of constructing implied messages.
The research subjects of this thesis are different structural relationships in Liaozhai zhiyi. And this thesis is divided into five chapters, of which the first is introduction, summarizing previous scholarly research findings of and working out the concept of spatial narration as the main methodological concept and hence establishes research premise and context. Chapter two utilizes plot and human-fox relationship in the human-fox love story as focus, aims at discussing rules of narration formulated in Liaozhai zhiyi. Chapter three mainly uses interactions between the immortals and mortals to reveal author’s entailed messages and implied aesthetic standards (or standard of appreciation) in between intercommunication and obstruction of the immortals and mortals. Chapter four breaks though mere textual analysis, adopts the perspective of intertextuality to perceive Liaozhai zhiyi’s absorption and transformation of the Story of Liu and Ruan’s meeting with fairy maiden by chance. The final chapter intersects with the setting of double lovers to discuss the aesthetic principles of parallelism observed by Pu Songling and structure of narration constructed, and therefore explicating implied messages behind structure.

From early 1922 to late 2018, the number of adaptions of Strange Tales from Liaozhai (聊齋志異), including films and TV series, is up to 141. Among them, a short story by the name of Xiao Cui (小翠) has been adapted at least ten times. In terms of adaptions of Strange Tales from Liaozhai, Painted Skin (畫皮) is the first one which is academically discussed most frequently, and Xiao Cui, the second one. However, there is a lack of Xiao Cui-related researches. Accordingly, the study aims at exploring the trend in the adaptations of Xiao Cui in Strange Tales from Liaozhai. The ghost cultures exist in the world among various nationalities for decades. Each nationality has its peculiar cognition about ghost. This thesis uses Nikolai Gogol’s ‘Evenings on a Farm Near Dikanka’ and Pu Songling’s ‘LiaoZhai Zhiyi’ (also strange stories from a Chinese Studio or Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio or Strange Tales of Laiozhai) to demonstrate the different meanings of ghosts and demons between the Russian and Chinese cultures. There are total of 8 stories in the“Evenings on a Farm near Dikanka”, and 496 in the “Liaozhai Zhiyi”. We take the stories that include “the unclean spirit” as samples; first inquires the charactoristics, follow by using the plots and events to support the purpose of comparsion. With the ‘Comparative Literature Theory’ as foundation, we compare the literatures using ‘Paralle Study’ through the method of Thematolagy. The thesis is divided five chapters. The first chapter is the introduction, includes the motive and the goal for the research, as well as the materials and the modern research survey, the method and the construction, the range of study and the limit and anticipated result for the research. The second chapter divides into two sections: first section describes and analyzes the ghost’s primary form of east Slav’s folklore belief, and the second section analyzes and discusses the ghost images and their meanings on “Evenings on a Farm near Dikanka”. The third chapter also divides into two sections: first section describes and analyzes the ghost’s primary form of Chinese folklore belief. Second section analyzes and discusses the ghost images and their meanings on“Liaozhai Zhiyi”.The fourth chapter compares the ghost appearances and intrinsic meanings between the Chinese and Russian cultures. The final chapter summarizes the full text, reconfirm the title of this thesis and the finding of the research.
