Resumen
This paper reviews the prospect of a radical redefinition of the relationship between society, technology, and Nature as posited within Paolo Soleri’s Arcology theory, and anticipates a transformative social order and environmental setting in support of sustainability as demonstrated within the urban laboratory Arcosanti. It locates the roots of Soleri's ecological architecture within a rejection of urban sprawl emerging from his early apprenticship with Frank Lloyd Wright at Taliesin West in Arizona, and argues that his own theoretical model, in presenting a fusion of architecture and ecology, prefigures a utopia of transcendence and offers a more rational planned response to the challenges of our age, while offering environmental movements a vision of what a sustainable urban future might look like. The paper argues that the positive utopian tendencies in Soleri’s work should be reaffirmed and, at the same time, it underlines an urgent need for multi-aspect and multi-disciplinary research, and postgraduate education, to be undertaken at Arcosanti, to test the parameters of micro- and macro-structures within alternative models of ecological design. In concluding the paper gives acknowledgement to the ongoing work of the Cosanti Foundation’s Board of Directors and its new Strategic Plan Steering Committee, and their commitment to attract renewed levels of financial and human resource in support of the urban laboratory’s unfinished business.

Resumen: En el título del artículo: “Acerca de las ciudades: la mirada de ayer y hoy” se intenta describir su contenido y el plano de observación de distintos planteamientos acerca de aquello que se ha entendido y juzgado como ciudad desde la segunda mitad del siglo XVIII hasta el presente. Se asume, como punto de partida, un artículo del historiador austríaco Carl Schorske, en el que se plantea como, desde las últimas décadas del siglo XVII hasta las primeras décadas de siglo XX, se advierten tres modos de mirar las ciudades, bien sea como espacios de virtud, de vicio o de algo “más allá del bien y del mal”. En el texto se afirma que estos tres modos de mirar y juzgar las ciudades han perdurado a todo lo largo del siglo XX y aún en los inicios del siglo XXI. Para ello, se recorren las aproximaciones más significativas a los fenómenos urbanos, en especial a los conceptos de “metrópolis”, “megalópolis” y su secuela, “ecumenópolis” que calificaron las ciudades en razón a su extensión y complejidad. A renglón seguido se da una lectura rápida a los planteamientos del grupo Team X en los que hay crítica a la ciudad funcional y propuestas dirigidas más hacia la experiencia de la ciudad que a unos esquemas abstractos. Se detallan dos propuestas “futuristas”: la del Urbanismo Espacial” de Yona Friedmann y la de la “Arcología” de Paolo Soleri. Y, en una sección aparte, se estudian aproximaciones contemporáneas a las ciudades como espacios de “complejidad, multiculturalidad e información”. Una breve sección propone interrogantes sobre la mirada a la ciudad latinoamericana, a partir de autores como José Luís Romero y Jacques Aprile Gniset. En la bibliografía se da cuenta de los textos consultados. ___Palabras clave: Historia urbana, ciudades, metrópolis, megalópolis, ecumenópolis. ___Abstract: In the title of the article: “About the cities: the look of yesterday and today” is intended to describe its content and the plan of observation of different approaches about what has been understood and judged as a city since the second half of the eighteenth century until the present. As a starting point, an article by the Austrian historian Carl Schorske argues that, from the last decades of the seventeenth century to the first decades of the twentieth century, three ways of looking at cities are seen, either as spaces of virtue, vice or something “beyond good and evil”. The text states that these three ways of looking at and judging cities have lasted throughout the twentieth century and even at the beginning of the twenty-first century. The most significant approaches to urban phenomena, especially the concepts of “metropolis”, “megalopolis” and its sequel, “ecumenopolis”, which cities have been called, are considered because of their extension and complexity. The following section gives a quick reading of the Team X proposals in which there is criticism of the functional city and proposals directed more towards the experience of the city than to abstract schemes. Two “futuristic” proposals are described: “Spatial Urbanism”, by Yona Friedmann and “Arcología”, by Paolo Soleri. In a separate section, contemporary approaches to cities are studied as spaces of “complexity, multiculturality and information”. A brief section proposes questions about the look at the Latin American city, based on authors such as José Luís Romero and Jacques Aprile Gniset. In this paper a novel quaternary alloy is formed by adding a small amount of rare earth Er (RE) into Bi5Sb8Sn solder alloy to improve its technological properties. The influences of Er on the resistivity and spreading properties of the novel solder alloy were systematically investigated. Studied results show that adding 0.25~0.75wt.% RE into Bi5Sb8Sn solder alloy, the resistivity changes little,while the wettability demonstrated a significant improvement.The spreading area reaches 27.22mm2 and increases by 23% than the Bi5Sb8Sn matrix soler when the content of RE is 0.5wt.%.With increasing the content of Er ,the spreading area of solder alloy decreases, but it is still higher than that of the Bi5Sb8Sn solder alloy. It is mainly closely related to new phases with RE ,the form of compounds and thickness of interface intermetallic compounds in the Bi5Sb8SnRE solder alloy.

The application of Ball Grid Array (BGA) technology in electronic packaging on high I/O plastic and ceramic packages has grown significantly during the past few years. Although PBGA (plastic BGA) has several advantages over fine-pitch Quad Flat Pack (QFP) in terms of smaller package area, higher I/Os, lower switching noise, large pitch, higher assembly yield, and improved robustness in manufacturing process, potential package reliability problems can still occur, e.g., excessive solder joint deformation induced by substrate warpage, moisture ingression (popcorn effect), large variation in solder ball size, voiding as a result of flux entrapment and improper pad/solder mask design (Marrs and Olachea, 1994; Solberg, 1994; Freyman and Petrucci, 1995; Lau, 1995; Donlin, 1996; Lasky et al., 1996; Munroe et al., 1996). Regardless of its improved thermal fatigue performance over the past few years through an extensive amount of research, the BGA solder joint may still pose a reliability issue under harsh environment, e.g., automotive underhood, larger package size, or higher temperature and temperature gradient due to increase in power dissipation of the package. Numerous studies in BGA solder joint deformation and reliability under thermal and mechanical loadings can be found in the literature, e.g., Borgesen et al. (1993), Choi et al. (1993), Guo et al. (1993), Ju et al. (1994), Lau et al. (1994) Lau (1995), and Heinrich et al. (1995). Also, reliability prediction models have been developed by, e.g., Darveaux et al. (1995) and Darveaux (1996). The present study focuses on the application of a detailed nonlinear finite element analysis (FEA) to studying the thermal cyclic response of solder joints in two particular BGA packages, full-matrix and perimeter. Both time-independent plasticity and time-dependent effect, i.e., creep and relaxation, are considered in the constitutive equations of solder joint to evaluate the discrepancy in the results of life prediction. The critical solder joint is identified, and the locations that are most susceptible to fatigue failure in the critical joint are discussed. Some limitations in computation and reliability prediction are also discussed.

En la segunda mitad de los sesenta, con la renuncia de Aldo Solari al Instituto de Ciencias Sociales de la Universidad de la República, una nueva generación de cientistas sociales intentó dar un cambio de rumbo radical a ese espacio académico. Este artículo analiza las razones del alejamiento de Solari y plantea diferencias entre modos de entender el estudio de lo social en esos años. Asume un énfasis político-institucional para estudiar la articulación de esas posturas con los procesos contemporáneos de transformación estructural de la universidad y las actividades de organizaciones internacionales que promovían el cultivo de las ciencias sociales en América Latina. Todos esos intentos se frustaron con el golpe de Estado de 1973. Justo allí se detiene este texto.

Abstract Background Soleris®Enterobacteriaceae is a growth-based, automated method for detection of Enterobacteriaceae in food. Objective A study was conducted to validate the Soleris method for detection of Enterobacteriaceae in select foods (pasteurized milk, yogurt, mozzarella cheese, ice cream, dried milk, pasteurized liquid egg, frozen cooked chicken, deli ham, lettuce, and dry dog food) at a threshold of ≥ 10 CFU/g of product. Methods Inclusivity and exclusivity of the Soleris method were assessed by testing 55 and 38 target and non-target bacterial strains, respectively. Matrix testing was performed with one naturally contaminated and nine inoculated foods. Efficacy of the Soleris method was compared to that of the ISO 21528-2:2017 direct plating reference method using probability of detection analysis. Independent laboratory testing was conducted to verify method performance in two matrixes (yogurt and deli ham). Method robustness, stability, and lot-to-lot consistency of the Soleris reagents were also assessed. Results Inclusivity of the Soleris test was 91% and exclusivity was 100%. In matrix testing, there were no significant differences in the number of positive results obtained with the Soleris and reference methods for any of the matrixes examined. Overall, of 370 test portions, there were 176 positive results by the Soleris method and 177 positive results by the reference procedure. Conclusions Soleris Enterobacteriaceae is an effective method for detection of Enterobacteriaceae in the foods evaluated, with performance equivalent to that of the ISO 21528-2:2017 reference method. Highlights The Soleris method offers the advantages of labor savings and results within 18 h.

El 16 de marzo de 1761, el Padre Antonio Soler escribió una carta al Duque de Medina Sidonia, pidiendo con cortesía, la vuelta de un regalo del «Libro de Clavicordio». Así comenzó una correspondencia de doce años entre Soler (22 cartas) y el duque. El centro de la correspondencia era el joven clavicordista de Cataluña, Pedro Santamant (n. 1752), el cual en 1765 estaba al servicio del duque («lo he visto ejecutar maravillas en al clabe»). A solicitud del duque. Soler consintió enseñar composición a Santamant en El Escorial. La correspondencia terminó con cólera por parte de Soler demandando la vuelta de algunas sonatas de un «Lib" de 40 Sonatas». La correspondencia «nos permite vislumbrar el carácter personal y musical» de Soler. Además, ofrece nueva información para la biografía de Soler. Revela el carácter didáctico de algunas sonatas de Soler, así como más información sobre el clavicordio español del siglo XVIII. Quizás nos permitirá también comprender mejor la música de Soler.

Abstract The Soleris yeast and mold method, a growth-based test system with an optical detection end point, was evaluated for its ability to detect yeast and mold contamination in a wide variety of foods. The Soleris test was used in a semiquantitative manner, in which the test result is positive or negative at a threshold level determined by the dilution and volume of sample homogenate added to the Soleris test vial. By testing at two or more threshold levels, the contamination level can be estimated. The LOD of the Soleris method is 10 CFU/g when 1 mL of a 1:10 sample homogenate is added to the test vial. In these studies, the Soleris results were compared to plate counts obtained using the U.S Food and Drug Administration/Bacteriological Analytical Manual direct plating method, and agreement between the methods was calculated.Considering results from both internal and independent laboratory trials, overall agreement between the methods was 90. Chi-square analysis showed, with few exceptions, that results of the Soleris and direct plating methods were not statistically different. Ruggedness testing was performed, and the Soleris method was found to be robust when challenged with marginally suboptimal assay conditions. Results of inclusivity testing showed that the Soleris test vial medium supports the growth of a wide variety of yeasts and molds common to foods. Results of exclusivity testing showed that bacteria do not produce positive results, even when present in the vial in relatively high initial concentrations. The Solerismethod produces results in 72 h or less and thus offers considerable time savings in comparison to other commonly used yeast and mold methods.

Abstract A study was conducted to determine the efficacy of the Soleris Non-fermenting-Total Viable Count (NF-TVC) automated growth-based method for semiquantitative detection of mesophilic, aerobic microorganisms in a variety of food products. A probability of detection (POD) statistical model was used to compare Soleris results at multiple test thresholds (dilutions) with aerobic plate counts determined using reference dilution plating procedures. Nine naturally contaminated food products were tested, with Soleris testing performed at three or four threshold levels for each food. Using the POD model, all Soleris test results were in statistical agreement with the reference plating procedures with the exception of a single threshold level in two trials with black pepper, and a single threshold level in the independent laboratory trial with cheesecake. Results of ruggedness testing showed that the Soleris method produced accurate results even when minor variances in operating parameters, including sample volume and incubation temperature, were introduced. Results of the internal and independent laboratory validation studies showed that the Soleris NF-TVC method can be used as an accurate alternative to conventional dilution plating procedures for evaluation of microbial counts at threshold levels, while saving 24 h or more in analysis time.

The high energy use for building operations in humid tropical climates is mostly used for operational mechanical ventilation such as air conditioning (AC) and fans. The use of large amounts of energy, especially fossil energy can reduce the quality of the environment, causing an increase in the temperature of the earth. Need more efforts for management of energy use by reducing fossil energy consumption. One effort that can be done is to replace mechanical production and utilize passive ventilation in buildings. this study is a literature review regarding the use of passive ventilation using a windcatcher integrated with solarc himneys. The use of windcatcher and the solar chimney is still very rare in Indonesia, but has the potential to solve thermal problems, especially in densely populated residential areas in cities that have the character of a humid tropical climate. The results of this study recommend criteria from windcatchers and soler chimney that might be applicable and adapt to the character of the urban humid tropical climate. Abstract A study was carried out to determine the efficacy of the Soleris® Direct Yeast and Mold (DYM) automated growth-based method for semiquantitative detection of yeast and mold in a variety of food products. A probability of detection (POD) statistical model was used to compare Soleris results at multiple test thresholds (dilutions) with plate counts determined using the U.S. Food and Drug Administration Bacteriological Analytical Manual, Chapter 18, dilution plating procedure. Fourteen naturally contaminated food products were tested, with Soleris testing performed at three or more threshold levels for each food. Using the POD model, the majority of Soleris test results were in statistical agreement with the reference plating procedures. The exceptions included a single threshold level in yogurt, black pepper, dried fruit, and dry pet food, and two levels in nonfat dry milk and saw palmetto powder. In all but one of these instances, the exception being pet food, the statistical disagreement was due to Soleris estimating a higher level of contamination than the reference method. Results of ruggedness testing showed that the Soleris method produced accurate results even when significant variances in a critical operating parameter, incubation temperature, were introduced. Results of the internal and independent laboratory validation studies showed that the Soleris DYM method can be used as an accurate alternative to conventional dilution plating procedures for evaluation of yeast and mold counts at threshold levels, while saving as much as 72 h in analysis time.

Abstract Here we describe results of a study to validate minor reagent formulation changes to the Soleris Direct Yeast and Mold (DYM) automated growth-based method for semi-quantitative detection of yeast and mold in food products. In order to reduce the maximum concentration of the selective agent chloramphenicol in the Soleris reagents, chloramphenicol was removed from the selective supplement and added to the vial growth medium itself. Therefore, both the vial medium and supplement have been reformulated in an alternative version of the method. A probability of detection (POD) statistical model was used to compare Soleris results at multiple test thresholds (dilutions) with plate counts determined using the U.S. Food and Drug Administration Bacteriological Analytical Manual dilution plating procedure. Three matrixes were tested; yogurt, tomato juice, and cocoa powder. POD analysis showed that the percentage of positive Soleris tests at various test thresholds were within the limits predicted by the reference method plate counts for all matrixes evaluated. Real-time stability data on three manufactured lots showed that the modified Soleris vial and supplement are stable for at a minimum of 10 months when stored at 2–8°C. In sum, results presented here demonstrate that the modifications to the Soleris DYM vial and supplement do not impact method performance. The modified Soleris DYM method can be used as an accurate alternative to conventional dilution plating procedures for semi-quantitative determination of yeast and mold at threshold levels, while saving as much as 3 days in analysis time.

Stems and roots of Salacia genus plants have been used as a specific remedy for early-stage diabetes, and one of the four sulphonium sulphates, salacinol is the compound responsible for the anti-diabetic activity. Salacia is prone to microbial contamination and insect infestation; hence, methods to estimate the microbial load in such plants will enhance its nutritional value. This paper highlights the novel use of Soleris® to quantify microbes of all types, namely bacteria, yeasts, molds, and coliforms in herbal extracts. The microbial analysis results obtained with Soleris® test vial have been compared with the conventional method, and the results indicate that Soleris® is equally efficient as the conventional method and in fact displays several advantages over the traditional method. The Soleris® method is a real time monitoring system that is highly sensitive, user-friendly, and environmentally friendly since it generates very little biomedical waste and saves a large amount of time. The data presented here demonstrate that for highly contaminated samples, results are available within 24 h. For yeasts and molds, the Soleris® method produces results in 48 h, thus offering considerable time savings compared to other commonly used methods.

Abstract The performance of the Soleris®E. coli method was compared with that of the ISO 7251 most probable number (MPN) and detection reference methods for Escherichia coli. The Soleris E. coli method is a growth-based, rapid, automated system composed of temperature-controlled incubation chambers and photodiode-based optical detection devices for measurement of color changes in a prepared medium vial. A dilution of the test sample homogenate is inoculated directly into the vial. Products of E. coli metabolism alter the color of the medium over time, and this change is monitored by the Soleris instrument. The test is used in a dilute-to-specification or specification monitoring manner in which the result is positive or negative around a desired cutoff (in CFU/g) determined by the dilution and volume of sample homogenate added to the vial. Alternatively, the test is used for zero tolerance determinations (e.g., absence in 25 g) by performing an off-line pre-enrichment step followed by transfer of a portion of the pre-enrichment culture to the Soleris vial. Six E. coli strains originating from food sources were inoculated individually into six food commodities: frozen green beans, Echinacea powder, cocoa powder, sweetened condensed milk, pasteurized liquid egg, and shredded mozzarella cheese. Uninoculated samples were included in each trial. The results obtained by the ISO 7251 detection method and the Soleris E. coli method were shown to be in agreement by Chi-square analysis when the presence of E. coli was determined in 25 g of sample. Results from the Soleris E. coli dilute-to-specification method and the ISO 7251 MPN method were found to be in agreement by probability of detection statistical analysis. In inclusivity testing, 52 of 53 E. coli strains were detected within 24 h. Only a non-thermoduric strain of serotype O157:H43 was not detected. In exclusivity testing, all 31 strains tested produced negative results. Results of ruggedness experiments show that accurate results can be obtained even when the operating temperature of the Soleris instrument is set beyond normal tolerances. The internal and independent laboratory studies demonstrated that the Soleris E. coli method could be successfully utilized as an alternative to the reference methods, with a significant time savings of 2 to 3 days.

Webspinners in the genus Haploembia Verhoeff (Embioptera: Oligotomidae) were introduced into California from their native range in the Mediterranean region. In that region the genus has long been thought to comprise a single widespread species Haploembia solieri (Rambur) with both sexual and asexual populations and two additional sexual species with restricted ranges in the Mediterranean. For most of its known history in California, only asexual populations of Haploembia solieri were collected. However, within the last couple of decades, sexual populations have been discovered. The purpose of this project is to determine whether a single species of Haploembia solieri exists in California, which may imply reacquisition of sex, or whether these populations represent two or more species. To resolve this question DNA sequence data were acquired from multiple populations (sexual and asexual) of Californian, New Mexican, and Mediterranean Haploembia solieri, including both nuclear (histone 3) and mitochondrial (cytochrome oxidase I) genes. These data were included in a phylogenetic analysis to resolve relationships between these individuals. Our analysis shows asexual California specimens grouping with the asexual specimens from Sardinia; whereas the sexual California specimens group separately from both asexual specimens, and sexual Mediterranean specimens. Therefore, we conclude that there are two species of Haploembia introduced into California and at least three species involved in what was historically considered H. solieri.

La presente investigación tiene como finalidad rescatar y reconocer parte del desarrollo artístico de principios del siglo XX (1919-1924) del medio local limeño que evidencia la influencia del estilo moderno en la construcción del arte peruano. Carlos Solari fue un crítico de arte peruano que trabajó en el diario El Comercio, comentando las exposiciones de arte realizadas entre 1919-1924. Durante estos años, la mayoría de autores utilizaban seudónimos para escribir. Solari, se hacía conocer como Don Quijote, también publicó en otros medios de prensa escrita, como Mundial aunque nuestra investigación se circunscribe al diario El Comercio. Se ha considerado mencionar 3 exposiciones de pintura de los 14 pintores que refiere Solari en su crítica de arte.

In this paper we characterize topologically the empty interior subsets of a compact surface S which can be ω-limit sets of recurrent orbits (but not of nonrecurrent ones) of continuous flows on S. This culminates the classification of ω-limit sets for surface flows initiated in [Jiménez & Soler, 2001; Soler, 2003; Jiménez & Soler, 2004a, 2004b]. We also show that this type of ω-limit sets can always be realized (up to topological equivalence) by smooth flows but cannot be realized by analytic flows.

Abstract The Soleris Non-fermenting Total Viable Count method was previously validated for a wide variety of food products, including cocoa powder. A matrix extension study was conducted to validate themethod for use with cocoa butter and cocoa liquor. Test samples included naturally contaminated cocoa liquor and cocoa butter inoculated with natural microbial flora derived from cocoa liquor. A probability of detection statistical model was used to compare Soleris results at multiple test thresholds (dilutions) with aerobic plate counts determined using the AOAC Official Method966.23 dilution plating method. Results of the two methods were not statistically different at any dilution level in any of thethree trials conducted. The Soleris method offersthe advantage of results within 24 h, compared tothe 48 h required by standard dilution plating methods.

Abstract Background Soleris®E. coli is an automated, growth-based method for detection and semi-quantitative determination of Escherichia coli in foods. The method can be used in dilute-to-specification (threshold) or presence/absence modes. Objective The objective of the study was to validate four modifications to the method: (1) a change in the vial detection window plug composition from agar to agarose to improve plug consistency and robustness, (2) a change in pre-enrichment incubation time for presence/absence testing from 6 h to 18–24 h, (3) a change in vial incubation temperature from 44.5 to 43.5°C, and (4) incorporation of a simple direct-from-vial confirmation test as an alternative to traditional procedures. Methods Elements of the study included inclusivity/exclusivity testing, matrix testing in comparison to the ISO 7251:2005 reference method, reagent stability/lot-to-lot consistency testing, and an independent laboratory study. Results In inclusivity testing, all 55 Escherichia coli strains tested produced positive results. In exclusivity testing, 30 of 31 strains of other bacterial species produced negative results, the sole exception being a strain of Enterobacter cloacae. In internal and independent laboratory matrix testing of mozzarella cheese, condensed milk, pasteurized liquid egg, and frozen green beans, results showed no significant differences in performance of the Soleris and reference methods with two exceptions, one in which the Soleris method produced more positive results, and one in which the reference method produced more positive results. Conclusion Performance characteristics of the modified Soleris E. coli method are consistent with those of the original validated method. Highlights The Soleris E. coli method offers improvements in ease of use and reagent robustness.
