Resumen
AbstractThis article examines the role of fortifications, garrisons, and militia service in the English East India Company’s early settlements in Asia and the Atlantic. Affecting everything from the physical space of such a settlement to the status and rights of its inhabitants, the institutions and ideologies of a variety of forms of military service revealed the degree to which Company leadership had early on come to understand their settlements in Asia not as mere trading factories, but as colonial plantations, and their role as a government in Asia. Even if their lofty ambitions rarely met expectations, the Company sought within them to cultivate law, jurisdiction, and a robust civic life that could in turn ensure an active, obedient, and virtuous body of subjects and, in a sense, citizens. The attitudes toward and policies concerning soldiering also revealed the degree to which the Company’s seventeenth-century regime, so often treated as unique amongst English overseas ventures and Europeans in Asia, in fact drew and innovated upon models of governance across Europe, the Atlantic, and Asia.

Resumen
Our study focuses on the challenges of preserving excavations and adjacent structures and stabilizing soil walls in construction projects. Neglecting appropriate protective measures can lead to settlements, instability, and alterations in the surrounding area. To address these issues, the use of retaining walls with soldier piles is recommended due to their simplicity, compatibility with different ground conditions, and adaptability to limited spaces. The manuscript presents investigations into the behavior of soldier pile walls, particularly in cohesive and marl soils. Numerical analyses and laboratory experiments were conducted to assess their performance. The research demonstrates the effectiveness of soldier pile walls in various construction operations, including highway construction, foundation excavation, and retaining walls for excavations. It also highlights their success in stabilizing slopes, embankments, underground structures, and protecting temporary and permanent retaining systems. Marl soil, a sedimentary rock composed of clay and calcium carbonate, presents unique challenges due to its high plasticity and semi-rigid behavior. The manuscript emphasizes the importance of understanding the behavior of piles in marl soils and improving the performance of soil nailing systems. The study examines the impact of different drilling methods on the behavior of soldier piles in marl soil, with a focus on rotary drilling with standard cement grout. The findings reveal increased tensile strength in piles installed using this method compared to percussive drilling. The research provides valuable insights for engineers and practitioners, contributing to efficient land utilization in urban areas. Overall, this research offers valuable knowledge for the construction industry in dealing with challenging soil conditions. It provides a foundation for developing improved design approaches for excavations and adjacent structures, particularly in cohesive and marl soils. The findings highlight the effectiveness of soldier pile walls and emphasize the need for understanding marl soil behavior to enhance the performance of soil nailing systems. Further research is encouraged to validate the results for different marl soils and explore additional strategies for improving the tensile strength and long-term behavior of piles in these conditions.

Resumen
In settlements for internally displaced persons (IDPs), achieving sustainable on-site faecal sludge management is crucial. Effective stabilization and treatment methods are vital, as the wrong choices can result in dire sanitary conditions. Tropical climate, marked by low- income settings and overburdened sanitation facilities, pose unique challenges that demand tailored solutions. This review paper focuses on simplicity, cost-efficiency, and minimal land requirements for stabilization, along with affordability, low health risks, and valuable end-products for treatment. Notable findings include mechanical presses, planted drying beds, and solar greenhouse drying beds as robust stabilization methods, while microwave heating, black soldier fly larvae, and anaerobic digestion show promise as sustainable treatment techniques. Adopting these techniques promises sustainable faecal sludge management and potential improvements in living standards. This paper guides the way toward enhanced sanitation and well-being in the toughest conditions.

Resumen
The article is devoted to the study of the life and work of representatives of the art school of painting in Chuguev. Due to the huge losses of their heritage, it still remains a blank spot in the history of national culture. The uniqueness of the masters of the brush of a small military settlement, which was Chuguev in the 19th century, consists in the fact that they came from a soldier and peasant environment. Mastering various technical techniques of painting, they worked in different genres. This allowed the Chuguev artists to create works of a secular and spiritual nature, including icons and frescoes. New names of Chuguev painters are introduced into scientific circulation, the characteristic of the works of Chuguev masters that have reached our time is given, and the peculiarities of their creativity are highlighted. The myth of the influence of Western European art on the work of the Chuguev masters is debunked. The Chuguev Art School is part of the Russian art school. Its significance lies in the fact that in the conditions of military settlements, examples of high art were created, understandable and close to every resident. The works created by local artists contributed to the creation of a special spiritual atmosphere in the Chuguev military district, the development of a common mentality and spiritual unification of the swedens – people of different nationalities and faiths.

Resumen
The dual roles of efficient degradation and bioconversion of a wide range of organic wastes into valuable animal protein and organic fertiliser, has led to increased interest in black soldier fly (BSF) technology as a highly promising tool for sustainable waste management and alternative protein production. The current study investigated the potential application of BSF technology in the valorisation of faecal sludge (FS), a common organic waste in the urban informal settlements in low and middle-income countries. We evaluated the effect of different feeding rates (100, 150, 200 and 250 mg/larva/day), different feeding regimen and supplementation with other waste feedstock (food remains, FR; brewers waste, BW; and banana peelings, BP) on BSF larvae (BSFL) growth rates/yield and FS reduction efficiency. Results showed significantly (P<0.01) higher prepupal yield (179±3.3 and 190±1.2 g) and shorter larval development time (16.7 and 15 days) when reared on 200 and 250 mg/larva/day FS, respectively. However, different feeding regimes of FS did not significantly affect larval growth rate and prepupal yield (P=0.56). Supplementation of FS with other organic substrates resulted in significantly increased BSFL biomass production and substrate reduction, and shortened larval development time; with the effect was more pronounced when FS was supplemented with FR and at 30% supplementation. Protein:fat ratios for BSFL reared on FS, FS:FR, FS:BW were significantly (P<0.05) higher (2.51, 2.53, and 2.44, respectively) compared to FS:BP mixture (1.99). These results demonstrated that supplementation of FS with locally available organic waste can be used to improve its suitability as feedstock for BSF production and organic waste bioremediation from the environment. In conclusion, a daily feeding strategy of substrate containing FS supplemented with 30% organic waste co-substrate at feeding rate of 200 mg/larva/day can be used as a guideline for BSFL mass production and bioremediation of FS both at small- and large-scale level.

Resumen
During the days of the British Mandate in Palestine, the leadership of the Hebrew Yishuv developed the concept of security settlements, i.e., settlements established on the frontier to provide security along the borders of the future state. The concept was put into practice with the Nahal (acronyms of Pioneer Youth Warrior) Brigade settlement enterprise which set up dozens of settlements from 1951 onwards. The first six settlements were founded by ‘lone’ soldiers: immigrants from Eastern Europe and Islamic countries, and natives who did not have a youth movement or pioneering background. The article offers an account of the creation of the Nahal settlement enterprise which adds to the existing research on the subject in two ways. Firstly, it identifies some of the stages in the historical process that have not as yet been adequately described. Secondly, contrary to existing research which claims that the attempt to integrate lone soldiers within the Nahal settlement enterprise failed and had no long-term effects, we argue that the integration achieved most of its goals.

Resumen
Introduction. The article studies southeastern policies of the Russian Empire in the second half of the 19th century, its campaigns and the annexation of Central Asia. Goals. The work analyzes reasons for the activation of foreign policy in the region during the mentioned period. The course and goals of the conquest of the Khanates of Kokand and Khiva, Emirate of Bukhara are considered. Materials. The paper investigates data contained in reports by the State Councilor М. Bekchurin, and one more document ― Arabic-script travel records (manuscript) by a private soldier Husniyar currently stored at the Manuscript Collection of the Institute of History, Language and Literature (Ufa Federal Research Centre of the RAS) and for the first time studied as a historical source. Results. Messages about the beauty of Eastern cities and Asian wealth had long attracted attention of Russian monarchs. Finally, Russia’s attempts to penetrate into Central Asia were crowned with success. In just two decades, the vast country further extended its borders far to the south and became a neighbor of another one ― the British Empire. Nowadays, the study of the history of establishing relations with Kazakhstan and Central Asia, when the southeastern borders of Russia almost returned to those of the early 18th century, is relevant and practically expedient. Reports by State Councilor M. Bekchurin reveal the economic objectives of the government: Russian industry and trade were looking for new markets for their products. So, M. Bekchurin gives his suggestions how to facilitate the growth of trade. The manuscript of Husniyar’s travel notes contains observations of an ordinary soldier, his attitude and experience as a Muslim in the campaign against his co-religionists. The source makes it possible to present the set and route of one military formation. Both the documents provide an opportunity to depict this region in the late 19th century. Currently, there are independent countries across this territory with different state borders, and the ethnic composition of many settlements has changed significantly.

Resumen
The article discusses the issue of military settlement on the so-called Recovered Territories in the years 1945–1948. The text examines the role of the army and military institutions in this process, the status of military settlers and the system of mutual links between military and civilian institutions dealing with military settlement. The article presents the overall organizational effort related to military settlement, difficulties accompanying settlers, problems of cooperation between military institutions and civil administration and the scale of military settlement against the background of the nationwide settlement action. The action of military settlement took place in extremely difficult conditions (e.g. migration and resettlement of the Polish and German population, or war damage). Despite this, between 1945 and 1948, about 534,000 people with the status of military settlers (including demobilized soldiers, as well as members of their families and families of fallen soldiers) settled in the so-called Recovered Territories. Of these, fewer than 180,000 people settled in the districts designated in June 1945 only for military settlements, while the vast majority (354,000) lived outside these districts. Nevertheless, the settlement of 180,000 people in border powiats can be considered a great success in the process of their development, conducive to better protection of the new Polish-German border. Military settlers played an important role in the process of settling the so-called Recovered Territories, because they constituted almost 12% of all settlers. Due to the extensiveness of the issue concerning the broadly understood Polish settlement in these lands in the first post-war years, the subject matter discussed in the article was limited to selected issues of military settlement, which were discussed on the basis of archival materials and Polish historiography related to the topic of this type of settlement.

Resumen
This thesis addresses the physical aspects of farming on soldier settlement blocks in south west Victoria. The undeveloped land, high establishment costs, stock losses through animal diseases and lack of managerial skills all contributed to the settlers' inability to meet their financial commitments. These factors are analysed, as are the effects of declining rural commodities prices during the 1920s and 1930s. In addition, the relationship between the settlers and the successive administrative agencies is examined. The scheme was administered by the Closer Settlement Board from its inception until 1932 and much of the discussion during this period concerns the interaction between settler and inspector. Soldier settlement after World War One represented one of the last attempts to create a large body of 'yeoman' farmers. From the early 1920s there was an increasing dichotomy between the 'yeoman' and the 'managerial' ideologies. This dichotomy placed additional pressure on soldier settlers who were expected to be 'efficient' without adequate finances. In the post C.S.B. era, the focus shifts to the attempts by the Closer Settlement Commission to salvage the scheme and its greater understanding of the problems faced by the settlers. While this part of the thesis necessarily becomes more political, the physical and financial environment in which the soldier settlers worked was still an important factor in their success or failure. Unlike the C.S.B. which tended to blame soldier settlers for their situation, the Commission acknowledged that settlers' ability to succeed was often constrained by circumstances beyond their control. Under the latter administration, instalments were written off, additional land was allocated and finally the blocks were revalued to guarantee the men at least some equity in their farms. Those settlers who had survived until these changes were instituted received a 'successful outcome of their life's work'.

Hodges, Ian Leslie. "'He belonged to Wagga': The Great War, the AIF and returned soldiers in an Australian country town". Phd thesis, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/1885/131446.

Texto completo
Resumen
This thesis follows the First World War generation from the Wagga Wagga district in southern New South Wales through the late nineteenth century to the mid-1930s. The environment in which Wagga’s soldiers grew up, their months or years in the army and their lives as returned men touch on the war’s most enduring themes. Wagga’s volunteers were the country men of AIF lore. Yet many earned their living in the same professions and occupations as city dwellers. While those who laboured on farms or worked as tradesmen might have been the bush men described by contemporaries like Charles Bean, a significant proportion of Wagga’s soldiers were not. Many of the local men who survived the war were profoundly affected. Some never recovered. But the evidence also indicates the breadth of returned soldiers’ involvement in the community. As well as the unemployed, the destitute, those who needed constant care and those who turned to crime, there were veterans who had jobs and families and managed to live what could be considered normal lives. Local war veterans who succeeded in business or politics, or who were active in community organisations, feature heavily in Wagga’s civic record, but most of the district’s returned men appear only fleetingly. While little of their personal and family lives can be gleaned from these sources, this absence is balanced by the often detailed and sometimes first-hand accounts of individuals’ circumstances in Repatriation Department files. Although these voluminous records are becoming better known they have not previously been used to inform an in-depth study of a single locale’s returned soldiers. The Government and civic records on Wagga combine to reveal the nuances that underlie the broader national story of the war and the AIF. On many important themes the district’s example suggests both the truth behind commonly accepted views and the extent to which they obscure a more complex reality.

Resumen
AbstractThis chapter places the East Central European experience of colonialism within a broader European framework by comparing the cases of Poland and Ireland in the nineteenth century. Historians of Ireland have long argued for the colonial status of Ireland within the United Kingdom by reference to English and Scottish settlement, civilising discourse, economic neglect, and political subjugation. Historians of Poland have been slower to deem it colonial, as not all of these features were present in all three of the partitions. Recently, it has become clear that some Irish and Polish subjects were themselves implicated in colonial practices elsewhere, as ideologues, administrators, soldiers, settlers, teachers, and missionaries. Other Polish and Irish subjects were critical of colonialism, however, and expressed support for colonial subjects elsewhere. After independence, Poland and Ireland diverged, as Ireland made anti-colonialism state policy, whereas Poland toyed with the idea of acquiring colonies. Little valued as a distinct cultural and political entity, Ireland used anti-colonialism as a means of asserting the state’s relevance on the international stage. Conversely, Poland’s more recent experience of statehood and the historical dominance of ethnic Poles in the region encouraged its ambitions to become a Great Power and thus a colonial one.

Resumen
Abstract Converted at a camp meeting revival, Ephraim Avery becomes an itinerant Methodist preacher. By the time Avery joins the New England Conference in 1822, the Methodist Church had developed an ingenious system of religious entrepreneurship, well suited to a new competitive religious marketplace in a nation on the move. Methodist circuit riders quickly become one of the most recognizable groups on the American landscape, blanketing the entire country and establishing more churches in more settlements than any comparable evangelical group. Avery also discovers the rewards he accrues as a loyal foot soldier in local conflicts with assertive Methodist women and rival preachers. His opponents characterize this behavior as slander.

Resumen
Letters 14 and 15 describe the two successive journeys that Brasseur undertook in the spring and summer of 1897. The first one – to the south-western corner of Lake Mweru and the Lubule River – was prompted by the mistaken assumption that a resupply caravan was due to transit through the area. The journey was cut short by the news of the Force Publique’s mutiny on the upper Ituri River in February. The second journey, to the capital of the Kazembe of the Lualaba, was intended to create more soldier outposts and to repress an anti-Yeke rising by the Bena Mitumba. From the upper Lualaba River, Brasseur and his party proceeded to the Luapula River, which they reached at the beginning of September, making their way back to Lofoi after visiting Mambilima Falls and some Yeke settlements in the western half of the lower Luapula valley.

Resumen
Care has long been a gendered attribute, frequently associated with women but rarely, until very recently, understood as an ethic and action shaping the built environment. This paper proposes using the lens of care to uncover women’s material culture contributions to the built environment. Histories that focus on the formal intersection of architecture and town planning and their professional identities can exclude women makers who, historically had to find other ways to shape built material culture. Under the rubric of care, this paper examines how women makers worked in applied art media across a range of “care” sites through the post-suffrage organisation, the Victorian branch of the Country Women’s Association (CWA). This philanthropic organisation was established in 1928 to advance the rights and care of women, children, and families in regional areas. Through exhibitions, media, touring lecturers and an affiliation with the Victorian Arts and Crafts Society, the CWA Victoria used craft and domestic material culture to democratise craft ideals and ameliorate poor environments in rural homes and towns. It fostered public health, welfare and the comfort and repair of self and communities. Through these means the organisation also provided support for the influx of new arrivals generated from the post-war rural reconstruction schemes of soldier settlement and mass migration from Britain. These larger projects allied the CWA Victoria organisation to a post-war settler identity which reanimated settler myths of land. In early twentieth-century Australia, care of the settler, built environment was gendered and racialised, an event that prompts an intersectional reassessment of the feminist model of care.
