Resumen
Safe mining is the premise and guarantee of sustainable development of coal energy. Due to the combination of excellent properties of polymers and traditional soft matters, polymer-containing soft matters are playing an increasingly important role in mine disaster and hazard control. To summarize the valuable work in recent years and provide reference and inspiration for researchers in this field, this paper reviewed the recent research progress in polymer-containing soft matters with respect to mine dust control, mine fire control, mine gas control and mine roadway support. From the perspective role of polymers in a material system, we classify mine polymer-containing soft matters into two categories. The first is polymer additive materials, in which polymers are used as additives to modify fluid-like soft matters, such as dust-reducing agents (surfactant solution) and dust-suppressing foams. The second is polymer-based materials, in which polymers are used as a main component to form high performance solid-like soft matters, such as fire prevention gels, foam gels, gas hole sealing material and resin anchorage agent. The preparation principle, properties and application of these soft matters are comprehensively reviewed. Furthermore, future research directions are also suggested.

Resumen
The evolution of nature created delicate structures and organisms. With the advancement of technology, especially the rise of additive manufacturing, bionics has gradually become a popular research field. Recently, researchers have concentrated on soft robotics, which can mimic the complex movements of animals by allowing continuous and often responsive local deformations. These properties give soft robots advantages in terms of integration and control with human tissue. The rise of additive manufacturing technologies and soft matters makes the fabrication of soft robots with complex functions such as bending, twisting, intricate 3D motion, grasping, and stretching possible. In this paper, the advantages and disadvantages of the additive manufacturing process, including fused deposition modeling, direct ink writing, inkjet printing, stereolithography, and selective laser sintering, are discussed. The applications of 3D printed soft matter in bionics, soft robotics, flexible electronics, and biomedical engineering are reviewed.

Resumen
The issue is devoted to theoretical, computer and experimental studies of internal heterogeneous patterns, their morphology and evolution in various soft physical systems—organic and inorganic materials (e.g. alloys, polymers, cell cultures, biological tissues as well as metastable and composite materials). The importance of these studies is determined by the significant role of internal structures on the macroscopic properties and behaviour of natural and manufactured tissues and materials. Modern methods of computer modelling, statistical physics, heat and mass transfer, statistical hydrodynamics, nonlinear dynamics and experimental methods are presented and discussed. Non-equilibrium patterns which appear during macroscopic transport and hydrodynamic flow, chemical reactions, external physical fields (magnetic, electrical, thermal and hydrodynamic) and the impact of external noise on pattern evolution are the foci of this issue. Special attention is paid to pattern formation in biological systems (such as drug transport, hydrodynamic patterns in blood and pattern dynamics in protein and insulin crystals) and to the development of a scientific background for progressive methods of cancer and insult therapy (magnetic hyperthermia for cancer therapy; magnetically induced drug delivery in thrombosed blood vessels). The present issue includes works on pattern growth and their evolution in systems with complex internal structures, including stochastic dynamics, and the influence of internal structures on the external static, dynamic magnetic and mechanical properties of these systems. This article is part of the theme issue ‘Patterns in soft and biological matters’.

Resumen
Abstract. Today, citizens have the possibility to use many different types of news media and participate politically in various ways. This study examines how use of different news types (hard and soft TV news as well as printed and online versions of broadsheet and tabloid newspapers) indirectly affects changes in offline and online political participation through current affairs knowledge and internal efficacy during nonelection and election time. We use a four-wave national panel survey from Denmark (N = 2,649) and show that use of hard TV news and broadsheets as well as online tabloids positively affects changes in both offline and online political participation through current affairs knowledge and internal efficacy. Use of soft TV news and printed tabloids has a negative indirect effect. These results are more pronounced for online political participation and during election time. However, use of soft TV news also has a positive direct effect on changes in political participation, which suggests a positive impact via other processes.

Resumen
PurposeWhat matters most for improving work quality and who can make a difference are perennial topics in employee relations research. The literature on work quality provides answers to these with regard to various constructs on a continuum from “soft” to “hard” variables and stakeholders seeking to influence employers who fall short of reasonable expectations with regard to these. A construct of “decent work” with both soft and hard variables was adopted for research and methods which were collaborative and participative with stakeholders in one national context.Design/methodology/approachThe “decent work” construct was operationalised from the literature and refined by collaborative and participative research. Exploring the relative importance of the constituent parts of decent work involved research with a range of stakeholders; employees, employers and advocates. The study involved most prominently low-paid workers, with employers and advocates also engaged through interviews.FindingsPrimarily hard “decent work” variables were identified among employees, primarily soft variables among employers and a mix of hard and soft among advocates. There are some common priorities across these stakeholders.Research limitations/implicationsThe main implication is that to engage a range of stakeholders requires a combination of soft and hard variables to be included in research and policy development. However, generalisation about what matters most and who makes a difference to work quality is intrinsically limited in context and time. In this research, the extent of employer engagement in the collaboration initiated by advocates and concerned most with the experiences of low-paid workers is a limitation.Practical implicationsWhat matters most are a set of soft and hard priorities to engage across stakeholders. Pay is an abiding priority among these and the priority most prominent for many advocates seeking to make a difference through influencing low-paying employers to provide a living wage. While the living wage is a significant focus for work quality, it is not in itself sufficient, as other soft and hard variables in the workplace matter as well. Those who can make a difference are the employers falling short of benchmark standards. Influence on these may emerge through decent work knowledge and skills in management and professional development programmes as well as in initiatives advocating wider adoption of the living wage.Social implicationsProblem areas of work quality, and problem employers, can be influenced by strategies shaping “hard” factors, including legislation. This needs to be complemented and integrated with strategies on “soft” factors, including identifying positive role models on themes of well-being, work–life balance and precarious forms of employment, as well as pay.Originality/valueThe identification of what matters and who can make a difference is based on an original, collaborative, research project, in one national context, offering analytical generalisability about “decent work” and an experience of collaborative research.

In grinding processes, water-soluble working fluid is in heavy usage to maintain and improve a grinding performance. In this paper, effects of the water quality (soft or hard) were studied in a new filter-less purification system using commercially available Polyglutamic acid based flocculants and the microbubble coolant at the same time. As a result of the experiments, it was found that the collection rate of the suspended matters by the magnetic adsorption removal for the hard water became lower compared to the soft water, due to the Ca component contained in rich. It has also been made clear that by removing the suspended matters in the fluid flocked by the flocculant using the magnetic adsorption method and overflowing the residue with the microbubbles after that, the collection rate of the suspended matters in the soft water fluid would become higher than 99%. In the case of the hard water as well, improvement of the collection rate by the microbubbles was confirmed.

The fundamental aspects of the wettability and the elasticity of soft matters, particularly, functional polymer solutions, lipid membranes, and biological cells in the development of new technologies are overviewed from the basic principles and underlying physics. The key concept is how to control interfacial interactions between solid substrates and soft matters through surface modification. Two representative examples are demonstrated to discuss the underlying physics behind the pattern and domain formation; one of them is multi-dimensional generation of heterogeneous organic arrays and the other is micro-patterning of red blood cells on lipid membranes

During the last several years, philosophers of religion have witnessed a long-drawn debate between Nelson Pike and John Fischer on the problems of theological fatalism, Fischer claiming in his most recent contribution to have proved that even if God's past beliefs are ‘nice soft facts’, still theological fatalism cannot be averted. Unfortunately, this debate has not – at least it seems to this observer – served substantially either to clarify the issues involved or to move toward a resolution of the question, but has instead confused matters by its use of misleading terminology and diverted the discussion into unpromising side roads.

Resumen
The relevance of self-organization, nonlinear phenomena and nonequilibrium behavior in a wide range of problems in space science and microgravity research, calls for a concerted approach using the tools of statistical physics, thermodynamics, nonlinear dynamics, mathematical modeling and numerical simulation, in synergy with experimentally oriented work. The reason behind the ubiquity of such concepts is that in many instances of relevance in space science one witnesses an interplay between molecular and macroscopic-level entities and processes, such as nucleation in phase transitions or aggregation and self-assembly in materials science and biology. These phenomena are fundamentally dynamic in nature. We present two minimal models one dealing with issues of complex behavior at the microscopic level and the second referring to the strong nonlinear nature of macroscopic evolution, relevant to soft-condensed matter under observation both on the ground and in microgravity conditions. These investigations open the way to a whole class of unexpected situations whose proper characterization and control can only be expected in the framework of nonequilibrium physics and complexity theory.

Resumen
INTRODUCTION By the time of diagnosis, sarcomas have frequently reached a large size and many patients have a long history of symptoms prior to diagnosis. The aim of this study was to assess whether size of tumour at presentation or duration of symptoms was a significant factor affecting outcome. PATIENTS AND METHODS A prospective database recording patient, tumour, treatment and outcome factors was reviewed. A total of 1460 patients with newly diagnosed sarcomas and with > 3 years of follow-up were included for analysis. RESULTS The mean size of sarcomas presenting to our unit was 10.7 cm at the time of diagnosis. Bone sarcomas averaged 11.3 cm with little variation by age or diagnosis, whilst subcutaneous soft tissue sarcomas averaged 10 cm. The incidence of metastases at diagnosis increased almost linearly with increasing size and the prognosis, even for patients without metastases at diagnosis became steadily worse with increasing size for all tumours, independent of other factors. Duration of symptoms did not correlate with size but patients with symptoms > 1 year had a slightly better prognosis than those with a shorter duration. CONCLUSIONS The author makes a plea for greater awareness of potential malignancy in lumps and bumps, particularly those over the size of a golf ball (4.27 cm), making the point that the smaller the tumour at diagnosis the better the prognosis.

Resumen
Dermatofibroma, also known as “fibrous histiocytoma”, is one of the most common cutaneous soft-tissue tumors. Many variants of dermatofibromas have been described, and knowledge of these variations is important to avoid misdiagnosis of a possibly more aggressive tumor. Histological features of different variants can coexist in the same lesion, but typical common fibrous histiocytoma features are generally found, at least focally, in all cases. However, when cellular changes make up the majority of the lesion, the histopathological diagnosis can become more complex and requires immunohistochemical investigations for correct nosographic classification. We present the case of a cutaneous fibrous histiocytoma, “granular cell” variant, found on the left leg of a 74-year-old woman.

Resumen
Image restoration has become a powerful domain now a days. In numerous real life applications Image restoration is important field because where image quality matters it existed like astronomical imaging, defense application, medical imaging and security systems. In real life applications normally image quality disturbed due to image acquisition problems like satellite system images cannot get statically as source and object both moving so noise occurring. Image restoration process involves to deal with that corrupted image. Degradation model used to train filtering techniques for both detection and removal of noise phase. This degeneration is usually the result of excess scar or noise. Standard impulse noise injection techniques are used for standard images. Early noise removal techniques perform better for simple kind of noise but have some deficiencies somewhere in sense of detection or removal process, so our focus is on soft computing techniques non classic algorithmic approach and using (ANN) artificial neural networks. These Fuzzy rules-based techniques performs better than traditional filtering techniques in sense of edge preservation.

Resumen
Compact stars are classified into three categories: neutron stars (NSs), quark stars (QSs) and hybrid stars (HSs). Stars having only hadronic matter are NSs, QSs having only quark matter up to u, d and s quarks and stars having quark core surrounded by a mixed matter (hadronic matter and quark matter) followed by hadronic matter are HSs. The mixed matter is well distributed to both hadron and quark matters. A huge magnetic field is predicted in the core of the neutron star and is observed in the surface of the neutron star. We study the effect of such huge magnetic field in the matter inside the compact objects basically the equation of state (EOS) of the matters. Since matter inside the star are very dense both hadronic and quark matter, we consider relativistic mean field theory in the hadronic matter and simple MIT bag model in the quark matter in the presence of strong magnetic field. We calculate the phase transition between hadronic and quark phases, maximum mass and eigenfrequencies of radial pulsation of NS, HS and QS in the presence of such a huge magnetic field. The mixed phase is constructed by using Glendenning conjecture in between hadron and quark phases. We find in the presence of magnetic field, the EOS in both matter becomes soft. As a result, the maximum mass is reduced and the period of oscillation is changed significantly and there is a sudden dip in the period of oscillations in the HS, which signifies the transition from one to another matter.

Resumen
Objective To analyse potential risk factors for postoperative pancreatic fistula (POPF). Methods A retrospective study on risk factors for POPF was conducted in patients undergoing laparoscopic pancreatoduodenectomy. Basic characteristics, and preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative patient data were collected and analysed. Results A total of 268 patients were enrolled in this study, including 54 patients with POPF following surgery (POPF incidence, 20.15%). Univariate analysis indicated that patient’s age, body mass index (BMI), preoperative bilirubin level, pancreas texture, and drainage fluid amylase level on day 1 following surgery were associated with POPF. Multiple logistic regression analysis indicated that preoperative bilirubin level ≥170 µmol/l, soft pancreas texture, BMI ≥25, and age ≥65 years were independent risk factors associated with POPF. Conclusions For patients with preoperative bilirubin level ≥170 µmol/l, soft pancreas texture, BMI ≥25 and age ≥65 years, clinically relevant measures should be taken as early as possible for the prophylaxis of POPF.

Resumen
Introduction: The role of positron-emission tomography/computed-tomography (PET/CT) in the management of sarcomas and as a prognostic tool has been studied. However, it remains unclear which metric is the most useful. We aimed to investigate if volume-based PET metrics (Tumor volume (TV) and total lesions glycolysis (TLG)) are superior to maximal standardized uptake value (SUVmax) and other metrics in predicting survival of patients with soft tissue and bone sarcomas. Materials and Methods: In this retrospective cohort study, we screened over 52′000 PET/CT scans to identify patients diagnosed with either soft tissue, bone or Ewing sarcoma and had a staging scan at our institution before initial therapy. We used a Wilcoxon signed-rank to assess which PET/CT metric was associated with survival in different patient subgroups. Receiver-Operating-Characteristic curve analysis was used to calculate cutoff values. Results: We identified a total of 88 patients with soft tissue (51), bone (26) or Ewing (11) sarcoma. Median age at presentation was 40 years (Range: 9–86 years). High SUVmax was most significantly associated with short survival (defined as <24 months) in soft tissue sarcoma (with a median and range of SUVmax 12.5 (8.8–16.0) in short (n = 18) and 5.5 (3.3–7.2) in long survival (≥24 months) (n = 31), with (p = 0.001). Similar results were seen in Ewing sarcoma (with a median and range of SUVmax 12.1 (7.6–14.7) in short (n = 6) and 3.7 (3.5–5.5) in long survival (n = 5), with (p = 0.017). However, no PET-specific metric but tumor-volume was significantly associated (p = 0.035) with survival in primary bone sarcomas (with a median and range of 217 cm3 (186–349) in short survival (n = 4) and 60 cm3 (22–104) in long survival (n = 19), with (p = 0.035). TLG was significantly inversely associated with long survival only in Ewing sarcoma (p = 0.03). Discussion: Our analysis shows that the outcome of soft tissue, bone and Ewing sarcomas is associated with different PET/CT metrics. We could not confirm the previously suggested superiority of volume-based metrics in soft tissue sarcomas, for which we found SUVmax to remain the best prognostic factor. However, bone sarcomas should probably be evaluated with tumor volume rather than FDG PET activity.

Resumen
In 1803, under the lead of John Marshall in Marbury v. Madison, the Supreme Court of the United States ruled that: It is emphatically the province and duty of the judicial department to say what the law is . . . If two laws conflict with each other, the courts must decide on the operation of each . . . This is of the very essence of judicial duty. Likewise in the European Union, under both EU law and the national laws of the Member States, it is widely accepted that only the judiciary must have a final say on what a given law means. Turning now from these quasi-constitutional principles to tariff classification matters, the question arises whether such principles are applied in EU customs classification matters? In the case of Explanatory Notes, the executive branch enacts ‘soft law’ guidance that, however, is widely followed and applied by the national customs administrations of the EU Member States. While formally we are facing soft law acts, the wide and almost unconditional application of tariff classification Explanatory Notes by the national customs administrations renders them de facto law.

Resumen
Employers assess and judge their employees on their knowledge of both technical skills and soft skills. Until the recent past, technical skills were given top priority. However, that perception has changed over time. The knowledge of soft skills is now being considered as important as or more important than technical knowledge. Professional success depends upon a host of parameters such as experience, expertise, skill level, personality traits, work style, communication style, and work-life balance. Soft skills have also become a key parameter of professional success. This paper looks at the factors that have contributed to the acknowledgment of the significance of the soft skills at workplace and also presents the ways in which the knowledge of the soft skills could be enriched to go up the career ladder. It proposes a list of key soft skills such as self-awareness, emotional intelligence, team work, cross-cultural communication and personal accountability, which are expected to be the game changers. It is hoped that the employees’ knowledge about essential soft skills would enable them to become productive and mindful professionals at their workplaces. It is also implied that employees view soft skills as valuable assets rather than extraneous matters in their professional success. The insights presented in the paper, if deployed diligently, could augur well for career growth and enable the employees to remain relevant even if the job and technology scenario keep changing.

Resumen
This article examines one of the novel aspects of the Amsterdam Treaty - the provision on Employment in light of the "Third Way" agenda of the Blair Government. After a brief explanation of what the Third Way is, the Author deals with the question of the new Community approaches to employment matters representing a step forward toward the implementation of soft law. The Author's opinion in that the Amsterdam Employment Title, and the soft law instruments issued to make its provisions effective over the past two years, represent, as a collective body of Community rules, a positive affirmation of a policy approach that has become associated with the Third Way agenda. Nevertheless, in the case of the Community's employment policy this may require a strengthening of the legal framework, converting soft law into binding rules, as the most effective means to turn guidelines into solid achievements.

There are considered the matters of state and municipal bodies activity efficiency increase due to modernization of soft-hardware systems for data storage and processing centers. The necessity of creation of maintenance services dynamically connected in the interests of various groups of users is marked out. There are considered the typical hierarchic structures and perspective topologies of soft-hardware complexes network communication that provides services support and accessibility. The twolevel model of network service formation on the basis of programming functions library or other programmed components in the network of soft-hardware systems for data storage and processing centers is considered. As a distinctive feature of the proposed approach to development and support of functions and program components libraries is creation of the UML language based software product visual models having a high semantic saturation. Such approach increases the degree of development information filling, allows decrease a quantity of paper documents.
