Resumen
Objective: The objective of the study was to find whether incorporation of MTSTT in fetal weight estimation formulae which are traditionally based on biparietal diameter (BPD), head circumference (HC), abdominal circumference (AC), and femur length (FL) improves birth weight (BW) estimation. Methods: In a prospective observational study, MTSTT was measured within 1 week of delivery in 100 women with term singleton pregnancy along with other standard biometric parameters, i.e. BPD, HC, AC and FL, and MTSTT. Multiple regression analysis was carried out using PHOEBE regression software using different combinations of biometric variables to find out the best fit model of fetal weight estimation. The predicted BW was compared with actual neonatal BW soon after delivery and regression coefficients (R2) were determined for each of prediction models for comparing the accuracies. Results: Mean gestational age at delivery was 38.4±1.08 weeks and the BW of neonates varied between 2.18 kg and 4.38 kg (mean ± standard deviation: 3.07±0.43 kg). By adding MTSTT to BPD, HC, AC, and FL, we obtained the formula Log 10 (BW) = −0.14783+0.00725 *BPD +0.00043 *HC +0.00436 *AC +0.01942 *FL +0.16299 *MTSTT, which had a very good Pearson regression coefficient ((r2: 0.89 p<0.001) compared to conventional models based on standard fetal biometry. All prediction models had better strength of correlation when combined with MTSTT (p<0.001). The routine four parameter formula could identify 45% and 80% of fetuses within 5% and 10% weight range; pick up rate was further increased to 61% and 95% by addition of MTSTT. Conclusion: It is evident that addition of MTSTT to other biometric variables in models of fetal weight estimation improves neonatal BW prediction (r2=0.89).

Resumen
<b><i>Objectives:</i></b> Fractional thigh volume (TVol) and fractional arm volume (AVol) measurements by three-dimensional (3D) ultrasound can reveal valuable information on fetal soft tissue development. However, it is not clear whether TVol or AVol provides better estimates of fetal body proportion and adiposity, independent of routine two-dimensional (2D) ultrasound biometry. The primary objective of the current study was to determine the correlations between fractional limb volumes (FLVs) and neonatal anthropometric parameters. <b><i>Design:</i></b> In this cross-sectional study, fetal FLVs were obtained within 24 h before term delivery from 40 medically and obstetrically uncomplicated pregnancies scheduled for elective cesarean section. TVol and AVol were determined using offline software. Postnatal morphometric data including birth weight; crown-heel, arm, and leg lengths; head, abdominal, mid-thigh, and mid-arm circumferences; and anterior thigh, biceps, and subscapular skinfold thicknesses were obtained. Pearson and partial correlation analyses were used to determine the relationships across antenatal volume calculations and neonatal indices. Correlation coefficients (<i>r</i>) were calculated. <b><i>Results:</i></b> Mean maternal age, BMI, and parity were 29.1 ± 5.4 years, 29.7 ± 3.5 kg/m2, and 1.0 ± 1.3, respectively. AVol showed moderate correlations with most of the neonatal parameters, including mid-thigh circumference (<i>r</i> = 0.683), mid-arm circumference (<i>r</i> = 0.627), birth weight (<i>r</i> = 0.583), head circumference (HC, <i>r</i> = 0.560), and abdominal circumference (<i>r</i> = 0.542). However, TVol was weakly related to only some of the indices. After controlling for gestational age, maternal age, BMI, parity, and 2D ultrasound biometry, TVol was no longer associated with any of the parameters, while AVol was independently correlated with mid-thigh (<i>r</i> = 0.724) and mid-arm circumference (<i>r</i> = 0.560), birth weight (<i>r</i> = 0.502), ponderal index (<i>r</i> = 0.402), HC (<i>r</i> = 0.382), biceps (<i>r</i> = 0.384), and subscapular skinfold thickness (<i>r</i> = 0.350). <b><i>Limitations:</i></b> The current design includes limited number of pregnancies with only scheduled cesarean deliveries. Neonatal percent body fat was not calculated, and air-displacement plethysmography was not used to assess neonatal body composition. The study population was Caucasian with a relatively high maternal BMI, which may limit extrapolation of the results to other settings. <b><i>Conclusions:</i></b> AVoL measurements by 3D ultrasound before delivery are significantly correlated with most of the neonatal morphometric indices, independent of maternal characteristics and 2D biometric parameters. AVol may have advantages over TVol for assessing limb soft tissue development in term fetuses. Future research can focus on feasibility and predictive ability of AVol measurements in prospective studies that include serial biometry over time.

Resumen
<b><i>Introduction:</i></b> We aim to evaluate the supplementary predictive value of soft tissue markers, including fetal limb volumes, for fetal birth weight and fat tissue weight. <b><i>Methods:</i></b> This is a prospective study of 60 patients undergoing term induction of labor. Ultrasound was performed 48 h before birth, and 2D sonographic measurements, subcutaneous tissue thickness, and 3D fetal limb volumes were taken. Birth weight and neonatal fat weight were assessed by plethysmography. Clinical data were collected. The relation between ultrasound and neonatal outcomes was assessed by univariate and multivariate predictive models. The estimated and actual birth weights were compared applying different published formulas, and systematic and random error were collected and compared. <b><i>Results:</i></b> 3D fetal limb volumes showed a strong relation to birth weight, absolute weight, and relative fat weight. The Lee 6 formula performed better than either Hadlock 3 or Lee 3 with the lowest random error. Fractional limb volumes involve a highly reproducible technique, with excellent correlation (intra-class coefficient &#x3e;0.90) for both inter- and intra-observer reliability. The prevalence of estimated EFW measures within 10% error from the actual birth weight was 71.7% with the Hadlock 3 model and 95.0% with the Lee 6 model (<i>p</i> = 0.09). <b><i>Conclusion:</i></b> Late assessment of 3D fetal limb volume in upper and lower extremities is not only useful for accurately predicting birth weight but is a useful marker for prediction of birth fat tissue weight.

Resumen
Purpose: to evaluate dynamics of subjective and objective accommodation in children wearing bifocal soft contact lenses (BSCLs) for myopia control with +4.00 D addition power. M e t h o d s: the study involved 22 patients (44 eyes).Mean age amounted to 10.1 ± 1.46 years and mean myopic refraction amounted to –3.21 ± 1.23 D. Patients were fitted Prima BIO Bi-focal BSCLs (OKVision Retail, Russia). All patients underwent cycloplegic refraction assessed with Auto Ref/Keratometer ARK 530A (Nidek, Japan), had axial length measured with IOL Master 500 optical biometry device (Carl Zeiss, Germany), had positive relative accommodation (PRA) assessed with and without lenses and had binocular (BAR) and monocular (MAR) accommodative response assessed at a distance of 33 cm with WAM-5500 Binocular Accommodation Auto Ref/Keratometer (Grand Seiko, Japan) prior to wearing BSCLs as well as 3, 6 and 12 months after wearing BSCLs.Results: neither MAR nor BAR measured without lenses changed after 3, 6 and 12 months of wearing BSCLs (p >0,05). A change in PRA evaluated without lenses was noted after 12 months (p < 0,05). PRA evaluated with lenses after 3, 6 and 12 months differed from baseline significantly (p < 0,001). Over 12 months of wearing BSCLs, changes in AL (0.09 ± 0.17 mm) and cycloplegic refraction (0.3 ±0.43 D) correlated with baseline BAR and MAR loosely. C o n c l u s i o n: objective accommodation (MAR and BAR) did not change in the course of wearing BSCLs with +4.00 D addition power. Increase in PRA evaluated without BSCLs may be associated with improvement of accommodation due to a full correction in the optic zone. The gradual increase in PRA evaluated with BSCLs probably indicates an adaptation of patients to addition zone in near vision conditions.

Resumen
A diagnosis was made on the fishing, processing, commercialization and generation of residues of the sururu fishery in Mundaú lagoon, Maceió-AL. Thirty nine fishermen were interviewed and also incursions were made for observations. Furthermore, sururus were collected to perform biometry. Residue of the sururu processing was collected to the fabrication of sururu waste meal (SWM), posteriorilly its bromatological composition was analysed. Fishermens of sururus fish 4.56 times week-1 and each fishing excursion lasts 5h26min, yielding 18.61 cans (18.61 to 37.22 kg soft tissue). Besides the sururus, 77.92% also catch fish, shrimp, and other organisms to complement the income. Average selling price was R$ 6.92 per kg of edible and CPUE from 3.42 to 6.85kg edible day-1. The average size and weight are 33.21 mm and 1.62 g, with 782.53 g of waste being generated to produce 1.0 kg of meat. SWM contained 37.00% calcium. It was verified that there is a need to create a management plan capable of reducing environmental impact in the lagoon, implement fishing programs and waste management, as well as improve the structure for the processing of that mollusc. Studies of the use of SWM as a source of calcium in diets are also recommended.

Resumen
The present paper deals with the brief introduction of Turtle Rescue and Conservation Centre (TRCC) and description of some rescued turtles. Nine specimens of turtles belonging to five genera were rescued and translocated to the centre till date including 9.3 kg male Indian Peacock soft-shelled turtle (Nilssonia hurum) for the first time from Jhapa district. The rescue operations were conducted for the translocation of turtles confiscated from the local market, censorial collectors, fisherman and public residence. The high resolution photographs of captured specimens, their necessary biometry and GPS coordinates of location were taken. Species identification was done with the help of and pictorial field guide and relevant literatures. Climatic data of study area were recorded from Gainde Irrigation Project, Maidhar, Jhapa. Interviews were taken during field visits with the help of structured questionnaire. Preliminary rescue data showed that the Indian flap-shelled turtle (Lissemys punctata) and Yellow bellied roofed turtle (Pangshura flaviventer) were the most overexploited species in the vicinities of the study area. The climatic condition of the rescue centre and water quality found suitable to support terrestrial and freshwater turtles and other various wetland flora and fauna. However, the rapid population growth and habitat destruction due to deforestation, unmanaged urbanization and expansion of agricultural land are found as the major threats to the survival of turtles and other wetland creatures at the study area and its vicinities. Resumen
Background. Myopia is the most common clinical refractive error of the eye. Only in Russia, there are about 15 million myopic people. Currently, in addition to traditional correction (glasses, soft contact lenses), keratorefractive surgery actively develops; however, due to the initial parameters of the cornea or the magnitude of the refractive error, it may be contraindicated to the patient. Nowadays an alternative to these correction methods for young patients with refractive errors of high and ultra-high degrees is the implantation of a phakic intraocular lens. The aim. To evaluate the efficiency of refractive errors correction using phakic IOL implantation.Materials and methods. We carried out a retrospective analysis of outpatient records of 56 patients who received surgical treatment for myopia and complex myopic astigmatism at the Orenburg branch of the S. Fyodorov Eye Microsurgery Federal State Institution in the period from 2019 to 2020 (110 eyes), all patients underwent implantation of a phakic intraocular lens IPCL V2.0, IPCL V2.0 TORIC. Patients were examined before surgery and on the first day after surgery. In addition to standard, special clinical and functional examination methods were used: optical biometry on the IOL-Master 700, determination of the density of endothelial cells using an endothelial microscope, examination of the fundus under cycloplegia; if necessary, peripheral laser coagulation of the retina was performed before calculating phakic IOLs.Results. All operations and the early postoperative period went without complications. The target BCVA (0.75–1.0) was achieved in 90 (81.8 %) eyes. All patients were satisfied with the treatment results.Conclusion. Implantation of IPCL V2.0 and IPCL V2.0 TORIC phakic IOLs is an effective method for correcting refractive errors, regardless of the degree of myopia and the presence of astigmatism.

Resumen
This manuscript presents the design of a new approach of human skin color authentication. Skin color is one of the most popular soft biometric modalities. Since a soft biometric modality alone cannot reliably authenticate an individual, this new system is designed to combine skin color results with other pure biometric modalities to increase recognition performance. In the classification process, we first perform facial skin detection by segmentation using the thresholding method in the HSV color space. Then, the K-means algorithm of the clustering method is used to determine the dominant colors on the skin pixels in the RGB model. Variations according to the R, G and B components are recorded in a reference model to enable an individual’s identity to be predicted on the basis of 30 clusters. Experimental results are promising and give a false acceptance rate (FAR) of 29.47% and a false rejection rate (FRR) of 70.53%.

Resumen
Biometric is used as a main security fence in a computer system. The unique characteristics of a person can be distinguished from each other. Human’s biometrics can be categorized into three types: morphological, biological and behavioural. Morphological biometrics uses physical features for recognition. Biological biometrics used to identify user based on biological features. Behavioural biometrics such as gender, culture, height and weight can be used as an additional security measure within a system. These biometric behavioural features are also known as soft biometric. This study uses soft biometric elements (gender, culture, region of birth and educational level) in the keystroke dynamic study to distinguish typing patterns in each of these categories. The Support Vector Machine (SVM) classification method is used to perform this classification for soft biometric identification. The results of this study have shown that soft biometrics in keystroke dynamic can be used to distinguish group of individuals typing.

Resumen
Nowadays, the demand for soft-biometric-based devices is increasing rapidly because of the huge use of electronics items such as mobiles, laptops and electronic gadgets in daily life. Recently, the healthcare department also emerged with soft-biometric technology, i.e., face biometrics, because the entire data, i.e., (gender, age, face expression and spoofing) of patients, doctors and other staff in hospitals is managed and forwarded through digital systems to reduce paperwork. This concept makes the relation friendlier between the patient and doctors and makes access to medical reports and treatments easier, anywhere and at any moment of life. In this paper, we proposed a new soft-biometric-based methodology for a secure biometric system because medical information plays an essential role in our life. In the proposed model, 5-layer U-Net-based architecture is used for face detection and Alex-Net-based architecture is used for classification of facial information i.e., age, gender, facial expression and face spoofing, etc. The proposed model outperforms the other state of art methodologies. The proposed methodology is evaluated and verified on six benchmark datasets i.e., NUAA Photograph Imposter Database, CASIA, Adience, The Images of Groups Dataset (IOG), The Extended Cohn-Kanade Dataset CK+ and The Japanese Female Facial Expression (JAFFE) Dataset. The proposed model achieved an accuracy of 94.17% for spoofing, 83.26% for age, 95.31% for gender and 96.9% for facial expression. Overall, the modification made in the proposed model has given better results and it will go a long way in the future to support soft-biometric based applications.

Resumen
It has recently been shown in Re-Identification (Re-ID) work that full-body images of people reveal their somatotype, even after change in apparel. A significant advantage of this biometric trait is that it can easily be captured, even at a distance, as a full-body image of a person, taken by a standard 2D camera. In this work, full-body image-based somatotype is investigated as a novel soft biometric feature for person recognition at a distance and on-the-move. The two common scenarios of (i) identification and (ii) verification are both studied and evaluated. To this end, two different deep networks have been recruited, one for the identification and one for the verification scenario. Experiments have been conducted on popular, publicly available datasets and the results indicate that somatotype can indeed be a valuable biometric trait for identity recognition at a distance and on-the-move (and hence also suitable for non-collaborative individuals) due to the ease of obtaining the required images. This soft biometric trait can be especially useful under a wider biometric fusion scheme.

Resumen
Background. There are a great number publications presenting results of various types of optical and ultrasound biometry before and after scleral buckling (SB).Patients and methods. Biometry was performed for 22 eyes of 22 patients before and after surgical treatment of rhegmatogenous retinal detachment. We used 4 types of optical (IOLMaster 500, IOLMaster 700, Lenstar LS 900 and REVO SOCT Copernicus) and 2 types of ultrasound biometry (A- and B-scan).Results. According to the all biometry data, there was an increase in the axial lens (AL) (the maximum value of eye elongation according to IOLMaster 500 data was 0.84 ± 0.69 mm, p = 0.000), swallowing of the anterior chamber depth (ACD) in regard to IOLMaster 700 (0,48 ± 0,32 mm, p = 0.000) and lens thickness (LT) augmentation (according to A-scan data the largest thickening was 0.17 ± 0.59 mm, p = 0.064).Conclusions. The anatomy of the eye reliably changes after SB implantation due to increase in the AL, ACD swallowing and an LT augmentation, that makes changes in IOL power calculation with modern formulas during combined surgery. Lenstar LS 900 is the preferred method of biometry when planning simultaneously lens exchange with SB procedure.

Resumen
Mobile banking, shopping, and in-app purchases utilize persistent authentication states for access to sensitive data. One-shot authentication permits access for a fixed time period. For instance, a username/password-based authentication allows a user access to all the shopping and payments data in the Amazon shopping app. Traditional user passwords and lock screens are easily compromised. Snooping attacks—observing an unsuspecting user entering passwords—and smudge attacks—examining touchscreen finger oil residue—enable compromised user authentication. Mobile device interactions provide robust human and device identity data. Such biometrics enhance authentication. In this paper, behavioral attributes during user input constitute the password. Adversary password reproduction difficulty increases since pure observation is insufficient. Current mobile continuous authentication schemes use, among others, touchscreen–swipe interactions or keyboard input timing. Many of these methods require cumbersome training or intrusive authentication. Software keyboard interactions provide a consistent biometric data stream. We develop biometric profiles using touch pressure, location, and timing. New interactions authenticate against a profile using a divergence measure. In our limited user–device data sets, the classification achieves virtually perfect accuracy.

In recent years, the study of soft biometrics has gained increasing interest in the security and business sectors. These characteristics provide limited biometric information about the individual; hence, it is possible to increase performance by combining numerous data sources to overcome the accuracy limitations of a single trait. In this research, we provide a study on the fusion of periocular features taken from pupils, fixations, and blinks to achieve a demographic classification, i.e., by age and gender. A data fusion approach is implemented for this purpose. To build a trust evaluation of the selected biometric traits, we first employ a concatenation scheme for fusion at the feature level and, at the score level, transformation and classifier-based score fusion approaches (e.g., weighted sum, weighted product, Bayesian rule, etc.). Data fusion enables improved performance and the synthesis of acquired information, as well as its secure storage and protection of the multi-biometric system’s original biometric models. The combination of these soft biometrics characteristics combines flawlessly the need to protect individual privacy and to have a strong discriminatory element. The results are quite encouraging, with an age classification accuracy of 84.45% and a gender classification accuracy of 84.62%, respectively. The results obtained encourage the studies on periocular area to detect soft biometrics to be applied when the lower part of the face is not visible.

Resumen
Soft biometrics can be used as a prescreening filter, either by using single trait or by combining several traits to aid the performance of recognition systems in an unobtrusive way. In many practical visual surveillance scenarios, facial information becomes difficult to be effectively constructed due to several varying challenges. However, from distance the visual appearance of an object can be efficiently inferred, thereby providing the possibility of estimating body related information. This paper presents an approach for estimating body related soft biometrics; specifically we propose a new approach based on body measurement and artificial neural network for predicting body weight of subjects and incorporate the existing technique on single view metrology for height estimation in videos with low frame rate. Our evaluation on 1120 frame sets of 80 subjects from a newly compiled dataset shows that the mentioned soft biometric information of human subjects can be adequately predicted from set of frames.

Resumen
Biometrics verification can be efficiently used for intrusion detection and intruder identification in video surveillance systems. Biometrics techniques can be largely divided into traditional and the so-called soft biometrics. Whereas traditional biometrics deals with physical characteristics such as face features, eye iris, and fingerprints, soft biometrics is concerned with such information as gender, national origin, and height. Traditional biometrics is versatile and highly accurate. But it is very difficult to get traditional biometric data from a distance and without personal cooperation. Soft biometrics, although featuring less accuracy, can be used much more freely though. Recently, many researchers have been made on human identification using soft biometrics data collected from a distance. In this paper, we use both traditional and soft biometrics for human identification and propose a framework for solving such problems as lighting, occlusion, and shadowing.

Resumen
Multi-biometric systems using feature-level fusion allow more accuracy and reliability in recognition performance than uni-biometric systems. But in practice, this type of fusion is difficult to implement especially when we are facing heterogeneous biometric modalities or incompatible features. The major challenge of feature fusion is to produce a representation of each modality with an excellent level of discrimination. Beyond pure biometric modalities, the use of metadata has proven to improve the performance of biometric systems. In view of these findings, our work focuses on multi-origin biometrics which allows the use of pure biometric modalities and metadata in a feature fusion strategy. The main objective of this paper is to present an overview of biometrics as bordered in the literature with a particular focus on multibiometrics and to propose a model of a multi-origin biometric system using pure biometric and soft biometric modalities in a feature-level fusion strategy. The curvelet transformation and the order statistics are proposed respectively for the extraction the feature of the pure biometric modalities, and for the selection of the relevant feature of each modality in order to ensure a good level of discrimination of the individuals. In this paper, we have presented the overview of biometrics through its concepts, modalities, advantages, disadvantages and implementation architectures. A focus has been put on multi-biometrics with the presentation of a harmonized process for feature fusion. For the experiments, we proposed a global model for feature fusion in a multi-origin system using face and iris modalities as pure biometrics, and facial skin color as metadata. This system and the results will be presented in future work.

Resumen
We studied the morphological diversity of gastropod shell forms from the viewpoint of theoretical morphology, emphasizing the relationships of shell form to postural stability and the available space for soft body, which we assessed in terms of the moment of force and soft-tissue ratio calculations, respectively. The results of computer simulations suggest a functional trade-off between postural stability and available space for soft body: a compact shell possessing a low spire and small umbilicus exhibits high postural stability, whereas a less overlapped shell form with a high spire and large umbilicus makes available space for soft body. A functional morphospace analysis using theoretical models reveals that outward and downward inclination of the aperture moderates the functional trade-off between these parameter values and permits compatibility between stable posture and efficient shell construction. The hypothetical optimum that realizes this compatibility is consistent with the observed range of forms estimated from 359 extant gastropod species. The biometric results also suggest that land snails are more highly constrained than marine species in achieving a balance between postural stability and available space for soft body.

Resumen
Unobtrusive Authentication Using ACTIvity-Related and Soft BIOmetrics (ACTIBIO) is an EU Specific Targeted Research Project (STREP) where new types of biometrics are combined with state-of-the-art unobtrusive technologies in order to enhance security in a wide spectrum of applications. The project aims to develop a modular, robust, multimodal biometrics security authentication and monitoring system, which uses a biodynamic physiological profile, unique for each individual, and advancements of the state of the art in unobtrusive behavioral and other biometrics, such as face, gait recognition, and seat-based anthropometrics. Several shortcomings of existing biometric recognition systems are addressed within this project, which have helped in improving existing sensors, in developing new algorithms, and in designing applications, towards creating new, unobtrusive, biometric authentication procedures in security-sensitive, Ambient Intelligence environments. This paper presents the concept of the ACTIBIO project and describes its unobtrusive authentication demonstrator in a real scenario by focusing on the vision-based biometric recognition modalities.

Resumen
Biometric systems remain the most widely used methods for identification and authentication purposes. Their wide acceptability has opened up more research into new application areas of biometric systems. However, biometric research requires an appropriate biometric dataset to validate the proposed technique. This dataset could be privately owned or publicly available for research purposes. In the field of iris biometric research, the iris dataset produced by the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CASIA) is the first, most popular, and widely used publicly available iris dataset. However, the increasing popularity and acceptability of human iris-related research have called for additional benchmarks, and therefore, new publicly available databases of human iris images. Existing publicly available human iris datasets have been collected from non-African subjects; therefore, this dataset is the first publicly available human iris dataset of African descent. Three categories of images were collected from 1028 volunteers that participated in the data collection task. The first category was made up of four iris images that were captured when the volunteers used spectacles, while the second category includes four iris images that were captured when the volunteers wore no spectacles. However, the third category of iris images was obtained from eight volunteers that used print-patterned contact lenses. Only four images were captured from volunteers in this category as they were not asked to put on spectacles. In addition to the iris images captured, soft biometric features such as age, gender, state of origin, weight, and height of the volunteers were also captured. It is strongly believed that this unique collection of iris datasets of African descent will open up new research in the study of the human iris.

Resumen
Biometric identity systems are now a prominent feature of contemporary law enforcement, including in Europe. Often advanced on the premise of efficiency and accuracy, they have also been the subject of significant controversy. Much attention has focussed on longer-standing biometric data collection, such as finger-printing and facial recognition, foregrounding concerns with the impact such technologies can have on the nature of policing and fundamental human rights. Less researched is the growing use of voice recognition in law enforcement. This paper examines the case of the recent Speaker Identification Integrated Project, a European wide initiative to create the first international and interoperable database of voice biometrics, now the third largest biometric database at Interpol. Drawing on Freedom of Information requests, interviews and public documentation, we outline the emergence and features of SiiP and explore how voice is recognised and attributed meaning. We understand Speaker Identification Integrated Project as constituting a particular ‘regime of recognition’ premised on the use of soft biometrics (age, language, accent and gender) to disembed voice in order to optimise for difference. This, in turn, has implications for the nature and scope of law enforcement, people's position in society, and justice concerns more broadly.

Resumen
A biometric analysis was performed on crabs (Paguristes eremita) collected in the soft bottom of the Sicilian Channel (southern Mediterranean Sea), on associated suberitid sponges (Suberites domuncula), and on shells inside sponges. Populations of crabs living in sponges overgrown on shells were compared with populations of crabs living in shells associated with the sea anemone Calliactis sp. Results from multivariate ordinations (principal component analysis, non-metric multidimensional scaling) and univariate linear regression analysis were discussed considering two possible models: (1) sponges are preferred to clean shell because they are a growing home; and (2) sponges are not preferred: they are used as an ‘emergency’ refuge by crabs searching for shells suitable for carrying sea anemones. Differences in shell assemblages and in biometric variables between populations living in sponges and populations living in shells associated with anemones, suggest that crabs, especially small ones, may live briefly in sponges and that sponges may be inhabited by a series of crabs over a long period.
