Resumen

Nowadays, many companies in Indonesia are running in the plantation field. Buana Tunas Sejahtera Company (Inc.) is a palm oil company in West Borneo Province that working under the Kencana Group. This company was organized by leaders, directors, managers, manager assistants, foremen, clerks, permanent workers, and freelance workers. The worker’s work performance in this company was slightly low due to their worker’s low motivation and discipline. This study aimed to know the method to improve the workers’ work performance in Buana Tunas Sejahtera Company (Inc.), Kapuas Hulu Regency. This was a descriptive quantitative study employing an Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) done by software namely Expert Choice 11. There were 100 workers chosen by the purposive sampling technique participated in this study. The result showed that the key point in dealing with the worker's work performance issue was meeting their social need, while improving their salary was a key point in dealing with the motivation issue. Building the worker's responsibility was playing an important role in improving the discipline culture. The company needs to improve the worker’s motivation by conducting training sessions, increasing worker’s salaries during the overtime hours, and giving more motivation to their workers. To improve the discipline culture, the company needs to use clear and firm rules to enforce the proper and accountable behavior among the worker.

Resumen

Aim. In the paper, the authors demonstrate the influence of the education and educational level of social workers on the quality of social work as a profession that helps people in unfavorable situation. They point to the importance of lifelong learning, which is essential for advancing the knowledge and competences of social workers in practice. Concept. Lifelong education for social workers is currently a necessity for their functioning not only on the basis of the rapid, dynamic changes in their problems and social clients, but also for rapid and dynamic changes in the use of methods and techniques of social work. Method. The study deals with the educational development of employees in the profession of social worker. It defines and identifies forms of continuous education of social workers, which can have different methods and which can result in different competencies of a social worker. Results. The study confirms that the lifelong learning of social workers requires constant access to support and information about education, but also to set opportunities and thus facilitate access to the education of social workers. It is necessary to realise that the competences of the social worker must be in accordance with the education that the social worker has. Conclusion. The scientific articles and contributions that we offer in this study point to lifelong learning, which has the effect of expanding the possibilities of a social worker’s work with several types of clients, increases his competences and thus acquires a lot of knowledge and skills that are subsequently applied in practice.

Resumen

Background: Young people who have travelled to another country, unaccompanied and with refugee status, are a both resilient and vulnerable group with specific needs. Supporting them is often challenging for social workers, and providing this support is mediated by the expectations that these young people have of social workers and social worker roles. Aim: In this study, we explore how young unaccompanied refugees (YURs) perceive the roles of social workers in the national context of Norway, where concerns about the quality of social work for this group have been highlighted. Method: Using the theoretical lens of role theory, semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with 11 Afghan boys between 16 and 23 years of age, living under the protection of the Child Welfare Services (CWS) in two municipalities in Norway. The interviews explored the boys’ positive and negative experiences of the social worker. A thematic analysis was conducted, in which the coding framework was informed by the premise that actual experience informs our expectations of other individuals’ behaviour and roles. Findings: YURs’ expectations are more than instrumental, and more than a task they expect the social worker to perform. They also expect the task to be performed in a person-centred, therapeutic alliance (e.g. with humour and trust), and that the social worker exhibits particular personal characteristics or competences, besides being culturally competent and sensitive. Conclusion: We find that YURs’ descriptions of the social worker’s roles of being a caregiver and practical helper are similar to what other young people in contact with the CWS expect. However, YURs expect an additional role, which is specific to this field of social work, namely that of an integration helper. However, the expectations that each individual young person has of social workers are individual, in flux and contextual, and not consistent over time. Therefore, we recommend prioritizing learning more about the young person’s individual expectations of the social worker roles, as well as a useful weighting of these roles for each individual young refugee.

Resumen

In this exploratory qualitative study, researchers examined key educational experiences bachelor- level social workers identified as being most helpful in transitioning to current social work careers. Twenty students from CSWE- accredited social work programs, having worked in a social work agency for a minimum of 4 months, voluntarily participated. The researchers conducted one- on- one interviews in which social workers were asked to describe educational experiences and beliefs that supported their transition to careers in social work. The data from these interviews were coded to identify themes to aid educators in examining variables significant in the education of future social workers. These themes include learning occurring in social work courses, self- awareness, learning in the field, and learning from others.

As the organizer of the realization of social welfare, the state has not been able to optimally overcome social changes, which have an impact on increasing the number and complexity of social welfare problems. With the arguments of humanity and the principle of mutual cooperation, some parties help the government, then are called social workers. To ensure their existence, social worker organizations in Indonesia initiated the formation of the Law on the Social Worker Profession. Law Number 14 of 2019 concerning Social Workers was formed. After the birth of this Law, some questions emerged whether the Law provided solutions to the problems faced by social workers in assisting social welfare, or with this Law, the state would be out of hand and emphasize the resolution of social problems to social workers. This study described the legal political conditions for forming this Law. This study answered the politics of the formation of Law Number 14 of 2019 and the challenges for Social Workers in Indonesia after the birth of the Law. Answering those problems, this study used—statute approach, historical approach, and conceptual approach, strengthened by some literature related to Law and social workers. Besides that, this study also used protection theory to assess the Law. This study also compared some regulations in some countries regarding social workers in some cases. In short, this study found that the strong historical background, the long existence of social workers in Indonesia, and the need for legal protection and certainty have become the reason for establishing Law No. 14, 2019. However, after the birth of the Law, challenges arose for social workers where their actualization was not easy and limited according to their profession and education. In addition, it is alleged that the Law could lead to malpractice because there are no sanctions. While in Australia, and USA, social worker laws give more space for social worker.

Resumen

Mental health supervision encompasses the oversight of social workers, who may operate within organizations or in private practice. The supervision of social workers varies depending on their work setting. Kadushin and Harkness (2002) identified distinct functions of supervision that differ based on whether the social worker is employed within an organization or works independently in private practice. These distinctions also extend to the types of cases handled, whether they involve recipients of social services provided by an organization or clients seeking psychotherapy or psychological counseling from a social worker in private practice. After completing training in a therapeutic orientation, social workers often acquire competencies as psychotherapists. These competencies are practiced in various contexts, depending on the social worker's professional setting, whether within an organization or in private practice. The social work profession is increasingly adopting the characteristics of a liberal profession, similar to that of psychologists, doctors, and psycho-pedagogues. The liberalization of the social work profession introduces new complexities to the supervision of social work services. These complexities are influenced by factors such as professional training, organizational characteristics, organizational culture, private practice conditions, the competencies of the supervisor, and the supervisor’s relationship to the organization (whether they are employed within the same organization as the supervisee or operate externally under a supervision contract chosen by the supervisee). The purpose of the present paper is to propose guidelines for establishing a general framework for supervision. This framework aims to support the work of supervisors, whether they are located within or outside an organization, in the context of the liberalization of the social work profession.

Abstract The current study examines the likelihood of seeking social workers’ help by social workers compared with non-social workers, taking into consideration their gender and the prevalence of stigma attached to seeking social workers' help. Data collection utilised structured questionnaires administered to a sample of 802 participants, of whom 355 were social workers and 447 non-social workers. The findings indicate that social workers, regardless of their gender, reported a higher likelihood than non-social workers of seeking help from social workers. Female social workers reported a higher likelihood of seeking social workers’ help than male social workers. High levels of stigma were associated with a lower likelihood of seeking social worker help regardless of the respondents’ gender or professional status. The current study highlights the importance of social workers’ professional socialisation with regard to seeking social workers’ help, with a special emphasis on raising male social workers’ awareness of the importance of seeking help. In addition, the study emphasises that the general public is less likely than social workers to seek social workers' help, regardless of gender, and that stigma is a barrier to seeking help. Implications for the practice of social workers are discussed.

Resumen

The peculiarities of decision-making by social workers in social care institutions are analyzed in the article. It introduces how social workers cope with delicate and socially sensitive situations according to the clients, of social care institutions, welfare. Ethical commitments and empathy of social workers, personal indications of client’s needs and objectives, are emphasized in the research. When a social worker is a team member and collaborates with other specialists, the interdisciplinary aspect of decision-making is indicated in the article.

Resumen

Burnout is a common occurrence for many healthcare social workers, though little academic literature addresses the impacts of the organizational environment on burnout among healthcare social workers. The purpose of this correlational study was to evaluate what organizational factors predict burnout in the healthcare environment while considering sociodemographic and organizational factors. An adaptation of Maslach's multidimensional theory of burnout served as the framework for this study. Surveys were distributed to members of the National Association of Social Workers who are employed in healthcare environments, resulting in a sample size of 237 useable responses. A multiple linear regression statistical analysis indicated that workload, reward, values, and level of care predicted emotional exhaustion, and therefore the potential for burnout (p < .001). Findings were consistent with the theoretical framework employed. Policy implications include the need for healthcare environments to develop standard operating procedures to address organizational barriers for social workers that contribute to social workers burnout. Implications for social change include an identified need to address burnout through healthcare organizations, professional associations, and academia using education, intervention, and policy.

Resumen

Purpose: To explore the variables associated with the adaptation of social worker to the role of social entrepreneur. Literature: Literature on the conflict inherent in institutional logics in hybrid organisations mostly focuses on the organisation level. The current research fills a gap in the literature by studying the conflict within the individual and identifying problematic competencies. Educators in SE programs can then design the curriculum to address these competencies. Method: The financial performance of the social enterprise (SE) is used as an indicator of the adaptation. A quantitative survey was conducted among 42 social enterprise managers. Findings: Years of SE experience and supportiveness for the practice of dismissing employees were associated with the adaptation. Moreover, the pace of adaptation slowed around the end of the third year of SE experience. In those novice participants with less than three years of SE experience, both the year of SE experience and leadership skills were associated with the adaptation. In those experienced participants with three or more years of experience, only their supportiveness for the practice of reviewing productivity was associated with the adaptation. Finally, when comparing the novice group and the experienced group, the mean of the leading skills changed significantly, but no significant change was found in the level of support for the three practices of dismissing employees, leadership skills, and reviewing productivity. Research limitations: The association of these four variables (years of SE experience, dismissing employees, leadership skills, and reviewing productivity) with the adaptation to the role of social entrepreneur may not be generalized to situations outside Hong Kong.

Sammanfattning Denna kvalitativa undersökning handlar om hur yrkesverksamma socionomer upplever arbetet med utsatta människor i mindre samhällen. Syftet med studien är att undersöka hur det kan vara att jobba inom det sociala arbetet på mindre orter och de olika omständigheter, fördelar och utmaningar det kan innebära. Undersökningen genomfördes på sex socionomer i mindre kommuner för att ta reda på hur de upplever och uttrycker sitt arbete utifrån aspekter som etiska riktlinjer, sekretess, anonymitet och lokalkännedom. I studien användes tidigare forskning på området och de teoretiska utgångspunkter studien utgått ifrån är systemteori och ekosystemteori. Författarna av studien använde ett målinriktat urval för att få tag i intervjupersoner som arbetar i kommuner i Norr och Västerbotten med en befolkning från 2000 upp till 12 000 invånare. Kvalitativa semistrukturerade intervjuer var den datainsamlingsmetod som användes i undersökningen. Intervjuerna analyserades därefter med tematisk analys. Slutsatsen från undersökningen visar att intervjupersonerna upplevde att det sociala arbetet i mindre samhällen kan ha vissa specifika egenskaper, fördelar och utmaningar till skillnad från arbetet i större städer. Aspekter som etik, sekretess, anonymitet och lokalkännedom kan vara svårare att förhålla sig till och de kan påverka arbetet och utövningen i mindre samhällen.

Resumen

Background: Modern professional organizations require such researches that are based on certain values. In that context ethics is based on values that guide social workers in their behaviour, decision-making and through relationships with clients, colleagues etc. Ethical issues pervade the work of social workers, as practice often takes place in the context of public welfare systems based on principles of social justice and the public good, and social workers have professional authority in relation to service users. Purpose: To reveal what ethical dilemmas social workers face in their professional activities. Methods: Comparative methods were used in the work, an analysis of ethical codes in professional associations' social work documents in different countries was carried out. Results: In their work, social workers must adhere to ethical standards. However, an ethical dilemma arises when a social worker is faced with one or more conflicting values. For example, the dilemma of intervention or non-intervention. In modern social work, there is a lack of attempts to formulate practical recommendations for social workers who are faced with difficult situations. Conclusion: Key values and principles can come into conflict, and social workers have to make difficult choices about how to act and what role to play. Therefore, the systematic study of ethical dilemmas and the development of practical recommendations can significantly improve the quality of social work. Resumen

Abstract The greenhouse industry is a multibillion-dollar sector of U.S. agricultural production. Greenhouse workers often experience hazardous working conditions placing them at risk for injury. These injuries include but are not limited to mechanized operations causing machine and tool related injuries, on-site shipping and loading practices placing excessive strain on a worker’s body, working from height leading to slips and falls, and a strenuous indoor working environment exceeding workers’ physical capabilities. This project focused on identifying greenhouse worker injury trends using workers’ compensation data from the Midwest region and observing and interviewing workers at one specific greenhouse company host site. Physical exertion, lifting and handling, and falls were all high value workers’ compensation problems for Midwestern regional greenhouses. A new piece of equipment and process was designed to prevent worker injury identified within the host site. The baseline risk from the original equipment was compared to the new equipment using a newly proposed indicator of social sustainability based on a validated safety professional tool, the risk assessment matrix (RAM), was utilized. The RAM found a reduction in risk between the original and new equipment. The new equipment design and process exhibited improvement in six out of the eleven hazards identified in the RAM. These improvements addressed lifting and handling concerns. Combining workers’ compensation data analysis, on-site observation, and worker interviews together was an effective method to rapidly deploy and design safer and thus more socially sustainable equipment for greenhouse workers.

Resumen

Backgrounds: Modern society tries to cover as many things as possible at the same time. And as you know, when you have a lot of things to do, chaos and disorganisation ensue. Self-management helps to prevent this, and it is used not only in the management sphere but also in social work. Social workers have a large number of clients, a lot of problems to solve, and therefore face difficulties. Developing self-management skills will help social workers in social services to act and work much more effectively. Purpose: to define self-management, its components, to substantiate the need to develop selfmanagement skills of social workers in the management work of social services and to identify the means of developing self-management skills. Methods: The study of the development of social workers' self-management skills in social services was carried out by analysing existing research, studying the works of scientists, and using the method of analysing Internet resources, systematising and summarising data. Results: After analysing the difficulties faced by social workers, it was proved that the development of self-management is a necessary direction of management work in social services. Conclusion: Thus, the results of the study indicate that the development of self-management skills in social workers is extremely necessary. The availability of these self-management skills will improve the work of social workers, their motivation and inspiration, help to counteract excessive exhaustion and contribute to the improvement and efficiency of the social service as a whole, by improving the management aspects of the respective organization. Resumen

The right to decent work including social protection is guaranteed to all citizens in multiple international human rights and labour rights conventions, as well as in African Union resolutions. However, many marginalised workers, including informal and rural workers, are excluded from social protection provisions. The digitalisation of social protection promised to increase the convenience and efficiency of accessing social protection entitlements (and it does for many), but millions of informal workers are being further excluded by digitalisation. This is the first study of digital social protection from the perspective of informal marginalised workers in Africa. Six studies were carried out with and by domestic workers, disabled workers, migrant workers, and home-based workers in Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia. This IDS Research Report synthesises their findings and recommendations to establish a clear agenda for change.
