Resumen
This study explored how students utilized spirituality as an effective coping mechanism for the stress they faced while in the Master's of Social Work program at California State University, San Bernardino. A stress and spirituality scale was used to measure each student's spirituality and perceived stress. Most students stated that spirituality and religious activity was helpful in coping with the stress of the MSW program. In addition, spirituality was found to have a strong positive impact on a person's abilities to cope with the stress of the program.

Dhar, Sohini. "Religiosity, Spirituality and Attendance at Religious Services among Recreational Drug Users: A Sub-Analysis of the Drugnet Survey". TopSCHOLAR®, 2010. http://digitalcommons.wku.edu/theses/181.

Texto completo
Resumen
This study is a sub-analysis ofthe previously collected cross-sectional DRUGNET survey data. The sample included 1,178 current users of illicit drugs and 389 former users. This study was delimited to U.S. citizens, aged 18 years and older, who completed the DRUGNET survey (n =1,567). DRUGNET was a descriptive online survey of self - reported attitudes and behaviors among a group of adult, self - identified drug users (i.e., not drug abusers). The purpose of the sub-analysis was to explore the importance of religion, spirituality, and religious service attendance in the context of an otherwise normal healthy adult life. Moreover, it also looked into potential patterns of association between aspects of religiosity/spirituality and illicit drug use. The study explored if there was a relationship between the strength of a respondent's spiritual or religious beliefs and the patterns of their recreational drug use. A canonical correlation analysis was conducted using self-rated spirituality, self-rated religiosity, and attendance at services as variables on the left (entered in MANOVA as dependent variables) and self-reported use of six groups of drugs as variables on the right (entered in MANOV A as covariates). One significant function was found, which showed that attending religious services and importance of religion were negatively associated with the use of alcohol, marijuana, cocaine, and hallucinogens. That is, people who reported a higher level of religiosity and who attended religious services were less likely to use these psychoactive drugs.

Resumen
This study investigates teachers’ attitudes toward value systems in the context of multicultural education. It highlights the importance of a functioning multi-cultural school as well as that of ongoing work with value systems. The aim of the study is to build on the existing body of research that addresses multicul-tural education in relation to schools’ value systems. Two theories have been used for this study; primarily critical multiculturalism and also the frame factor theory (ramfaktorteorin). A survey of 14 questions was conducted and the data collected was analysed quantitatively. The survey was separated into three sections: substantive questions, questions related to didactics in religious education, and questions about teachers’ attitudes toward value systems. Multicultural education was a theme throughout the survey. The study found that most in-service teachers believe that it is important to actively implement multicultural education and that the basis of a successful multicultural school is the incorporation of a working value system. The study concludes that it is crucial that teachers and students are provided with an understanding of what a functioning multicultural school and a multi-cultural society look like. Without this understanding there will continue to be a gap in society that has the potential to manifest itself as an “us and them” mentality. More work around value systems as well as more professional de-velopment for in-service teachers around multicultural education is essential, as the study revealed a lack of understanding and/or disinterest from some in-service teachers.

Texto completo
Resumen
Includes bibliographical references.
This study explores the use of a palm computer, linked to a hand held global positioning system receiver, by members of an informal settlement and a rural community to collect socio-economic (SE) data. The theoretical foundation is taken from such disciplines as Semiotics, Human Computer Interaction (HCI) and Survey Research Methods. This theory was used to develop a methodology, which enabled the researcher to investigate whether it is feasible to use icons to represent SE variables, whether HCI theory is useful for assessing the field observations of the volunteers using the palm computer, and whether the data collected is useful in terms of informal settlements and Communal Property Associations (CPA's). The research approach involved developing a set of icons, which were then pretested using feedback from volunteers in Mitchell’s Plain (Cape Town) before doing field-testing in Algeria and Imizamo Yethu. Next, two field studies were conducted. In Algeria and Imizamo Yethu, the volunteers were asked to identify a set of SE icons, they were taught how to use the palm computer and the CyberTracker software, and each volunteer was asked to conduct a mini-survey. The volunteer responses to the SE icons were analysed using semiotic criteria to determine how well they identified the icons. Next, the field observations were assessed with usability criteria from HCI. Finally, the two data sets were evaluated to determine its usefulness. The recommendations of this research are that if a set of SE icons is to be developed, the researcher suggests that symbols, which are well known by the community be used. That these symbols be tested in a 32x32 pixel format to determine if there is enough detail for recognition. Also, avoid detail in a picture that could cause confusion. Also, detailed investigations into the effect of culture, gender and background, as well as human perception is needed with the focus on communities. The main motivation for this is that informal settlements are a mix between rural, urban, educated and not, and also having different cultures. Next, it is further recommended that tests in homogeneous communities also be done to determine whether they do have the same mental concept. Further field studies are required to sort out various technical problems and to test a larger set of icons. Finally, other applications for this system should be investigated, e.g. land allocation distribution.

Korbmacher, Julie M. "New challenges for interviewers when innovating social surveys". Diss., Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, 2014. http://nbn-resolving.de/urn:nbn:de:bvb:19-179663.

Texto completo
Resumen
The combination of survey data with more objective information, such as administrative records, is a promising innovation within social science research. The advantages of such projects are manifold, but implementing them also bears challenges to be considered. For example, the survey respondents typically have to consent to the linking of external data sources and interviewers have to feel comfortable with this task. This dissertation investigates whether and to what extent the interviewers have an influence on the willingness of the respondents to participate in two new projects within the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE). Both projects had the goal to reduce the burden for respondents and to increase the data quality by linking the survey data with additional, more objective data. Both linkages required the interviewers to collect respondents’ written consent during the interview. The starting point of this dissertation is the question of what influences respondents’ decisions to consent to link their survey answers with administrative data. Three different areas are considered: characteristics of the respondents, the interviewers, and the interaction between respondents and interviewers. The results suggest that although respondent and household characteristics are important, a large part of the variation is explained by the interviewers. However, the information available about interviewers in SHARE is limited to a few demographic characteristics. Therefore, it is difficult to identify key interviewer characteristics that influence the consent process. To close this research gap, a detailed interviewer survey was developed and implemented in SHARE. This survey covers four different dimensions of interviewer characteristics: interviewers’ attitudes, their own behavior, experiences in surveys and special measurements, and their expectations regarding their success. These dimensions are applied to several aspects of the survey process, such as unit or item nonresponse as well as the specific projects of the corresponding SHARE questionnaire. The information collected in the interviewer survey is then used to analyze interviewer effects on respondents’ willingness to consent to the collection of blood samples. Those samples are analyzed in a laboratory and the results linked with the survey data. Interviewers’ experience and their expectations are of special interest, because as these are two characteristics that can be influenced during interviewer training and selection. The results in this dissertation show that the interviewers have a considerable effect on respondents’ consent to the collection of biomarkers. Moreover, the information collected in the interviewer survey can explain most of the variance on the interviewer level. A motivation for linking survey data with more objective data is the assumption that survey data suffer from recall error. In the last step, the overlap of information collected in the survey and provided in the administrative records is used to analyze recall error in the year of retirement. The comparison of the two datasets shows that most of respondents remember the year they retired correctly. Nevertheless, a considerable proportion of respondents make recall errors. Characteristics can be identified which increase the likelihood of a misreport, However, the error seems to be unsystematic, meaning that no pattern of reporting the event of retirement too late or too early is found.

Ucar, Bulent. "The Effectiveness of Religion-Affiliated Nonprofit Organizations in Social Services: A Survey Study of Nursing Homes in Virginia". VCU Scholars Compass, 2011. http://scholarscompass.vcu.edu/etd/2640.

Texto completo
Resumen
The primary purpose of this study is to determine whether being a church affiliated nursing home influences performance. Performance is measured based on criterion put in place by the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). The secondary purpose is, regardless of ownership type - religiously affiliated or secular- to investigate if more religiously involved nursing homes perform better than their less religiously involved counterparts. These two purposes are hypothesized with six different hypotheses each of which are tested by utilizing OLS regression analysis. This study extensively discusses the arguments surrounding the Charitable Choice Initiative, which allowed faith-based organizations (FBOs) to compete for federal and state grants and funds without altering their religious beliefs or practices while setting up a partnership with government in delivering social services. The subject has been part of serious debates among policy makers, practitioners and scholars after President George W. Bush's creation of the White House Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives in 2001. This study applied self regulation theory, which is originally an individual level theory, to organizations by using metaphors, as many newly developing fields of studies have done. The self regulation theory is tested through analyzing secondary data sets that are provided by CMS and through a religiosity survey data set that this researcher collected from 218 out of 287 CMS certified nursing homes in Virginia. The relationship between religious involvements of nursing homes and their patient outcomes and health inspection outcomes are tested. The statistical analyses supported only one hypothesis out of six. Since most of the hypotheses are not supported by the findings, the theory used to explain the role of religious motivation in performance of organizations requires further testing through additional rigorous studies.

Resumen
Divorce has been and remains a prevalent occurrence in the United States and, while rates are not increasing as they once were, it still remains an extremely common phenomenon. As of the most recent U.S. Census Bureau report on divorce and remarriage, 56% of men and 59% of women ever married have been divorced. Despite these statistics, the vast majority of Americans still value marriage as an institution. This study aims to examine the role religion plays in the propensity and timing of remarriage. Using logistic and OLS regressions, and data pooled from the 1995 and 2002 National Survey of Family Growth, multifaceted effects of denominational subcultures are examined concerning the propensity and timing of remarriage among divorced women. In addition, the linkages between religious salience, religious attendance, and the propensity and timing of remarriage are explored.

McLaughlin, Terence Henry. "Parental rights in religious upbringing and religious education within a liberal perspective". Thesis, University College London (University of London), 1991. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/10018556/.

Texto completo
Resumen
This thesis engages in a critical examination of parents' rights in religious upbringing and religious education within a liberal perspective. One of the central features of a 'liberal perspective' is taken here to be a commitment to the importance of valuing and developing the autonomy of the child. This commitment has important implications for the defensibility of both religious upbringing and religious education, and for the scope of parental rights that can be exercised in relation to them. In the first three chapters it is argued that, given this perspective, parents have a right to give their children a certain kind of religious upbringing; one where their children are brought up to have an initial determinate religious commitment, but one which is both open to, and compatible with, the child's eventual achievement of autonomy. This view is defended against a range of objections and the character of such an upbringing is explored in some detail. In the next four chapters it is argued that, following on from this claim about religious upbringing, a broadly similar claim can be made about religious education and schooling. Parents are seen as having the right to give their children a distinctive kind of liberal education, including a form of religious schooling, which seeks the development of their child's autonomy from a particular starting point. The argument proceeds from an analysis of parents' rights in general concerning education, through a critical exploration of the notion of liberal education, to an outline of the concept of the `liberal religious school' and an analysis of the difficulties to which it gives rise. The thesis concludes with an exploration of further considerations which support the view that a plurality of forms of liberal education, including education in religion, should be acknowledged, in relation to which parental rights can legitimately be claimed and exercised.

Resumen
This thesis considers how the law should manage conflicts between religious freedom and the prohibition of sexual orientation discrimination. It starts from the basis that both these rights are valuable and worthy of protection, but that such disputes are often characterised by animosity. It contends that a proportionality analysis provides the best method for resolving these conflicts. In particular, it argues that proportionality is a conciliatory method of reasoning because it provides context-dependent and nuanced answers to these issues, providing scope for re-assessment in future cases, and because it accepts losing claims as in principle as worthy of protection. It is also argued that proportionality is advantageous because it inherently demands justification where rights are infringed. The thesis takes a comparative approach, examining the law in England and Wales, Canada and the USA to demonstrate the clash of rights and to compare how these issues have been dealt with by courts and legislatures. It considers these issues with reference to four areas of law. The first assesses how far employees with discriminatory religious beliefs should be accommodated in the workplace, including whether they should have a right not to perform aspects of their work that are contrary to their beliefs and whether they should be permitted to share their discriminatory views at work. The second considers whether and when religious organisations should be permitted to discriminate in their employment decisions. The third examines how far religious organisations should be permitted to discriminate in providing services, such as charitable services or when hiring out premises, and the fourth whether religious individuals should be allowed to discriminate in the secular marketplace.

Resumen
Although the primary role of the computer has been in processing and analysis of survey data, it has increasingly been used in data collection. Computer surveys are not exempt from a common problem: some refuse to participate. Many researchers and practitioners indicate the refusal problem is less for computer surveys, perhaps due to the novelty of the method. What has not been investigated is the refusal problem when on-line surveys are no longer novel. This research study examines the use of one form of computer-assisted data collection, the electronic or on-line survey, as an organizational research tool. The study utilized historical response data and administered an on-line survey to individuals known to be cooperative or uncooperative in other on-line surveys. It investigated nonresponse bias and response effects of typical responders, periodic participants, and typical refusers within a sample of corporate employees in a computer-interactive interviewing environment utilizing on-line surveys. The items measured included: participation, respondent characteristics, response speed, interview length, perceived versus actual interview length, quantity of data, item nonresponse, item response bias, consistency of response, extremity of response, and early and late response. It also evaluated factors reported as important when deciding to participate, preferred data collection method, and preferred time of display. Past participation, attitudes toward on-line organizational surveys, response burden, and response error were assessed. The overall completion rate of 55.7% was achieved in this study. All effort was made to encourage cooperation of all groups, including an invitation to participate, token, on-line pre-notification, 800 number support, two on-line reminders, support of temporary exit, and a paper follow-up survey. A significant difference in the participation of the three groups was found. Only three demographic variables were found to be significant. No significant differences were found in speed of response, interview length, quantity, item nonresponse, item response bias, consistency, and extremity. Significant differences were found in the perceived and actual times to complete the survey.

Jonsdottir, Gudbjorg Andrea. "Context effects in social surveys : a study of question order effects". Thesis, London School of Economics and Political Science (University of London), 2004. http://etheses.lse.ac.uk/1794/.

Texto completo
Resumen
This research investigates context effects in social surveys. Context effects, the ways in which previous questions affect responses to later questions, can occur when questions deal with aspects of closely related issues. Such effects have been explained by reference to social cognition, social judgement and cognitive consistency theories. Following a review of the literature, three 'split-ballot' experiments, exploring how increasing the salience of particular topics affects responses to related questions, were conducted in a multi-wave national panel survey in Iceland. The first experiment investigates the effects of knowledge questions on expressed political interest. Respondents who were asked the knowledge questions first reported less interest in politics than did other respondents. Contrary to self-perception theory, it is argued that the knowledge questions serve as a frame of reference for the interpretation of the vague phrase, 'to follow what is going on in government and public affairs'. In the second experiment the accessibility of particular topics was increased by providing specific or general examples in the preamble to a question asking about the most important problems facing the nation. The results lend support to the principle of cognitive accessibility, which suggests that respondents do not systematically retrieve all relevant information stored in memory but base their answers on the most accessible information. It is argued that the specific examples widen the question's frame of reference and thus change its meaning. In the third experiment general attitude questions about abortion and nuclear weapons were placed either in pro- or anti-contexts. Respondents who agreed with the context items showed an assimilation effect, whereas those who disagreed showed a contrast effect. It is concluded that due to the inherent instability and complexity of attitudes, responses to attitude questions are likely to be influenced by the immediate context in which they are asked.

Resumen
This thesis describes the design, maintenance and statistical analysis involved in undertaking a Longitudinal Survey. A longitudinal survey (or study) obtains observations or responses from individuals over several times over a defined period. This enables the direct study of changes in an individual's response over time. In particular, it distinguishes an individual's change over time from the baseline differences among individuals within the initial panel (or cohort). This is not possible in a cross-sectional study. As such, longitudinal surveys give correlated responses within individuals. Longitudinal studies therefore require different considerations for sample design and selection and analysis from standard cross-sectional studies. This thesis looks at the methodology for analysing social surveys. Most social surveys comprise of variables described as categorical variables. This thesis outlines the process of sample design and selection, interviewing and analysis for a longitudinal study. Emphasis is given to categorical response data typical of a survey. Included in this thesis are examples relating to the Goodna Longitudinal Survey and the Longitudinal Survey of Immigrants to Australia (LSIA). Analysis in this thesis also utilises data collected from these surveys. The Goodna Longitudinal Survey was conducted by the Queensland Office of Economic and Statistical Research (a portfolio office within Queensland Treasury) and began in 2002. It ran for two years whereby two waves of responses were collected.

Resumen
The history of the prison system in the US is inextricably linked to Christianity. Penitentiary shares its root word, penitence, with repentance. Quakers and Congregationalists started the very first prisons because they viewed the corporal punishment of that time to be cruel (Graber 20). Even today, prisons are required to hire chaplains to make sure incarcerated people have the freedom to practice religion inside of the prison. The largest volunteer group serving incarcerated people is Prison Fellowship, an arm of the Religious Right which began in the 1970s and is now the largest faith based group of its kind1 (Prison Fellowship “Benefits”). Under the umbrella of Prison Fellowship, a pre-release program called InnerChange Freedom Initiative was developed with the specific goal of transforming incarcerated men in order to lower recidivism rates. The Religious Right claims to have positive effects on incarcerated people beyond cultivating spirituality, such as better rehabilitation and lower recidivism. However, their claims have not withstood scientific scrutiny. This begs the question, what are the effects of the Religious Right’s programming inside of prisons? The US prison system, created with the intent of protecting society from criminals, was developed primarily by straight, white, Christian men who intended the system to be for men. Every aspect of a resident’s life is controlled by someone else;

Resumen
This research study emerged in an effort to examine the views and experiences of first and second year Master of Social Work students relative to the role of religion and spirituality in the social work profession. A cross-sectional correlational design was used in this research study. This design was implemented through a 70 hem multifaceted questionnaire with a reliability of .82. The questionnaire was given to fifteen first year and seventeen second year Master of Social Work students at Clark Atlanta University. The sample consisted of 30 females and 2 males and 93.3% of the population was African American. This research study’s intent was to reexamine the place of reLgion and spirituality in the social work profession. The reexamination allowed practitioners to become empowered in knowing their own values and beliefs, and in turn understanding how to assist clients in their belief systems. The results of the study revealed that first and second year students have positive attitudes towards religion and spirituality in the social work profession. The study also revealed that there is no difference between the attitudes of first and second year students.

Resumen
Europe has in recent years recognized the need of the inclusion of religions in the dialogue on social cohesion and building of its future. Analysts of the interreligious dialogue suggest that understanding the process of it may be helpful to both the initiators of such conversations as well as all the participants. The idea of different religions working together raises some questions. One of the first questions asked is whether interreligious dialogue really works. How can diverse religions dialogue when there are disputes even within the same religions and within their branches? The understanding of the process offers a better chance of such dialogue being successful and useful for the building of the world we live in.  This thesis explores interreligious dialogue by looking into the interreligious council of Stockholm, which currently includes eighteen different religions, representing some of the city’s diversity, its thoughts and culture. For the analysis, we will use Orton’s discussion and recommendations. In his “Interfaith dialogue: seven key questions for theory, policy and practice” (2016), Orton considers many of the nuances involved in such dialogue. Questioning and reflections allow for the observations and insight into  the complexities of interreligious dialogue which provides for better understanding of the process included. Theories and angles consider social and psychological elements, as well as religious concerns.  Using qualitative research, coming from the interpretive paradigm, this thesis analyses how interreligious dialogue works within a local interreligious council. Analysing the reflections and answers of the respondents, we find the answers to some of the questions given by Orton and reflect over the practical understanding of the theories we looked at.
