This research examined the relationship between intergroup contact, intercultural communication apprehension, and social perspective taking. Participants were students taking a course which facilitates interactions between culturally diverse students around the globe via internet technologies, students taking an introductory psychology course, and students taking upper-level psychology courses. Participants in the intercultural contact condition were expected to show gains in social perspective taking and a decrease in intercultural communication apprehension when compared to the two comparison groups. No significant differences between the three groups were found for either change in intercultural communication apprehension or social perspective taking. Potential explanations for this lack of change are explored, along with a path model to explain the influence of extraversion, neuroticism, agreeableness and openness on the dependent variables.

This research, grounded on Intercultural Psychology and Social Anthropology, aimed to understand the experiences related to the ethnic and religious aspects of the marriage between a Brazilian woman (Muslim or not) and a foreign Muslim man. The study used the ethnographic method, using virtual and face-to-face methods to collect empirical data, having a Turkish Muslim community located in the city of São Paulo and a Muslim community located in the city of Barretos, in the interior of São Paulo state, for the face-to-face interactions. In order to collect the virtual empirical data, the researcher accessed personal blogs, Facebook communities and amateur videos produced by Brazilian women married to Turkish and Arab Muslim men, since the cyber space is understood as a constitutive dimension of a society, where the subjects build themselves and act. The collaborators of this research were Brazilian women married to Turkish or Arab Muslims, both from the face-to-face and virtual environments, and members belonging to the specified communities. Research included participant observation of the researcher in the Muslim communities already mentioned and in houses of intercultural and Turkish couples as data collection instrument. Intercultural couples were Brazilian women married to Arab or Turkish Muslim men. Amateur videos produced by some interlocutors, available in YouTube, were used for observation. Videos produced by other Brazilian women who had relationship or had married Turkish or Arab Muslim men, reports or institutional news available on the internet and television material such as movies and soup operas were also sources for participant observation. Other materials used were registers made in the field notebook and open face-to-face, Skype, WhatsApp or e-mail interviews. Collected data were inserted and analyzed by thematic axes, distributed simultaneously with the theoretical concepts throughout the text. It was concluded that charms were present in learning a new culture; music, flavors, landscapes and the relationship with a man who still keeps the lost romanticism of many Brazilians. However, the disenchantment refers to new eating habits, the acceptance of the new (Islamic) religion by the Brazilian family and the experience in lands where the gender roles are well delineated. However, the research also found the issue of relationships fully developed in the virtual world, in which many Brazilian women are used as a springboard for these men to leave the financial crisis of their countries. This ultimately results in intercultural marriages that face several difficulties, including Brazilian women being victim of various types of abuse.

This work represents an effort to organize the large number of ideas that emerge from the experiences of edu-communication developed by three schools in the city of São Paulo with significantly different sociocultural realities: a public school of São Paulo, a private Catholic College and a Guarani indigenous school. These communities have interacted through various media in creating dialogues and debates, and met with a focus on discussion of ecology and culture of peace. The search, therefore, wished to describe sociocultural integration processes that these three educational communities lived. The notion of \"spiritual/existential\" poverty was important part of search reflections since gathers a wide range of ideas and participating communities attend representations concerning cultural crisis that affects our life values. In May 2009 were conducted interviews with children, teenagers and adults in each of the three schools before the meetings. In December 2009 the same people were interviewed to check potential changes to compare their imaginary expectations, attitudes, and what they said about the basics of the integration process that intercultural experiences allow children, teenagers, parents and educators of the three participating schools

This dissertation aims to analyze and identify the process of migration of Brazilian women to Switzerland who came to marry with Swiss men and the repercussions of this marriage in their lives. In this perspective were considered the aspects related to the motivations for the migration and the difficulties at the arrival; the circumstances at meeting their husbands; the adaptation to the country, to the family in law and to the marriage itself; and finally the feelings experienced and the needs felt. The research is divided into three articles, one theoretical and two empirical. The first one presents a brief historical uprising about marriage and the transformation this institution has been suffering a long time. The second article searches to investigate the motivations of the migration and how the participants came to marry. The third article studies the intercultural marriage between Brazilian women and Swiss men, and the repercussions of this marriage in their lives. The methodology was based in a qualitative approach. Twelve Brazilian women who are married with Swiss men and live in Switzerland in the German part were interviewed. The appreciation of the data was realized with Minayos Content Analysis. The results indicate that the motivations for the migration of the participants are related to the search of better life opportunities or for falling in love with a Swiss. Some married for staying in the country, other married because of love. Nevertheless, in general, the difficulties found in marriage were similar: difficulties with the language, swiss way of thinking, children education, religion and relatives

For a cross-cultural comparison of context influences in ethnicity encoding, two variations of the Memory Confusion Protocol (MCP) were applied on Brazilians. Both variations consist in a slide-show exposition of a discussion between two rival teams, with black and white players on both sides, in two forms: Control (teams with identical grey colour) and Experimental (teams with different colours). The two variations were: Translated Only, with photographs of basketball players used in the original experiment, and the respective translated dialog; and Adapted, with photographs of Brazilian models with soccer uniforms and a re-elaborated dialog, more fitting to this sport. The research was divided, then, in three different phases: (I) a 84 participants experiment with the Translated MCP, in the state of São Paulo (II) a 569 participants experiment with the Translated MCP, in seven different Brazilian states (BA, ES, MT, RJ, RN, SC, SP); and (III) a 77 participants experiment with the Adapted MCP, in the state of São Paulo. In Phase I, the ethnicity encoding, contrary to the original experiment (Kurzban et al., 2001), accompanied the intensity grown of the coalition encoding. In Phase II ethnicity encoding lowered in intensity during a the raise of intensity of coalition encoding, but coalition encoding kept a lower intensity, in both conditions, if compared to the original experiment coalition encoding rates. In Phase III, the results of both dimensions are analogue to those of the Kurzban et al., 2001 experiment. The data obtained strengthens the theory of a universal coalition encoding module, and encoding ethnicity as a byproduct of it. The data also reveals the importance of a carefully planned adaptation in order to run cross-cultural studies.

During the last decades of the 21st century, the national and international academic cooperation agreements between universities have been intensified and contributed to the encounter of diversified cultural and educational realities. In this context, we question how interpersonal relationships are developed, considering culture as a mediator of this process related to otherness. The main objective of this research is to understand the meaning of intercultural experience and the alterity relationship for foreign students in academic exchange in the University of São Paulo. Based on the techniques and procedures of Jacob Levy Moreno\'s method, we proposed a dialogue between psychodrama and phenomenology to reflect the otherness theme. Two groups of sociopsychodramatic intervention were organized formed by latin americans, europeans and asians to describe and understand the senses assigned by the students to the intercultural experience. The themes circunscribed the sense of intercultural experience in terms of the used language, of the comparison between countries and of the living as a foreigner, all relevant to the dynamic of the interchange role. The results highlight categories: time, gender, cultural references, language, self-knowledge and ambiguous living, which were debated regarding otherness. From the technical and methodological point of view, this approach provides Morenos studies a wide reading over the relationship self and the other, considering simultaneously the identity and the difference as aspects highlighted by the groups. The analysis developed with the groups of exchange students seems to indicate, from one side, the need of an action and revision of university procedures about hosting the demand that transforms the context of education itself. From the other side, it indicates towards a reflection over the possibilities and limits of otherness, undergoing the cultural frontiers around the ambiguities of the living dimension and the experience of being a foreigner in the contemporary intercultural contact

Two different perspectives could be identified in literature about race encoding in the formation of first impressions (social categorization): 1) race encoding is an automatic, inevitable and mandatory process. 2) race encoding is a context-dependent process which decreases with the amplification of visual cues indicating group affiliation. The objective of this work was to measure the coalition and race codification and their effects in the presence and absence of coalition visual cues, to compare the results of the Brazilian sample with a North American sample, and to compare the results of men and women. In the first study, the memory confusion protocol - an unobtrusive measure developed to investigate how people use the features of others as a basis of social categorization - was used to assess encoding. 569 participants from seven different states (BA, ES, MT, RJ, RN, SC, SP), 280 males and 289 females, between 17 to 58 years old, were exposed to an experimental context of rivalry between two teams in two different conditions: shared visual appearance (each team wore jerseys of different colors) versus absence of shared visual appearance (all individuals were wearing jerseys of same color). We found that coalition encoding increased and race encoding decreased when visual cues of coalition were amplified, which implies that race encoding is not an inevitable and mandatory process. These results are generally similar with the North-American findings. Moreover, we found, in general, resemblance in men and women performances, but a slight difference in the conditions where all individuals were wearing jerseys of same color. Additionally, another study was conducted to assess features of the experimental models attributed by judges. We verified that the model chosen more by men was judged as the strongest, and the model tended to be chosen more by women was judged as the richest and well succeed, when all models were wearing jerseys of same color. The general results suggest the universality of the detecting alliance and coalitions mechanism; that the encoding by race could be a byproduct of coalitional psychology, and sexual difference in the codification of environmental informations could have evolved by sexual selection.

This thesis deals with subjects who have been through a war traumatism. These subjects have lived, witnessed or have been confronted with one or numerous events where close or far relatives died or were threatened to be killed. Moreover, the specificity of the traumatic shock they have been the victims of lies in the fact it keeps surfacing up repeatedly through forced memories or nightmares. Our research focuses on the question of the psychic elaboration of the traumatic event, the way it becomes a thought, and on the meaning one gives to it. This work of elaboration is realized thanks to internal and external resources. We consider from the outset that overcoming one’s trauma should not be interpreted as a resistance to it but as the capacity to represent the experience that has been undergone. Our study is based on a population of Iraqi women who fled the Iraqi-American war and the civil war. It is a population of refugees who sought asylum in Syria

This research aims at analyzing the Support Networks of Dekasseguis, the nodes that form them, the quality of the bonds that unite them, and the influence of these social actors in decisions made by Brazilian workers in Japan. Firstly, we focus our studies on Dekassegui. Next, we present the history of Social Network analysis within the Humanities and specifically within Psychology, and specify the relations between social networks and migration. We then describe the basics of Intercultural Approach we used in this work. The methodology used follows the precepts of Grounded Theory. Interviews were conducted in person and via the Internet, mainly instant messaging (MSN), with young Brazilian who had the experience of working as dekasseguis in Japan. The data shows impressions of these immigrants about the Japanese people, their acquaintance and communication difficulties with the locals and other Brazilians under the same condition in Japan, and how their Social Network influences in their decision making.

My research tends to study the impact of the implications of social norms and the legislative imperatives on the construction of the identity questions among women of Arab-Muslim culture in France and Tunisia. In fact, I wonder in this thesis research about the possible psychological implications of socio-cultural splitting in the construction of the identity. I also want to know whether the building of identity among women of arab-muslim culture is marked by certain referential confusion or it’s attributed to a synthetically elaboration of two clashing social statuses.Under the intercultural hold, the contemporary cultural identities are marked by permanent remnants. Every culture is again an intercultural organization. Thus, I’ve put forward the hypothesis stating that against the intercultural hold, every cultural identity is fashioned by the influence of the contact of cultures and the normative interferences to be multiple and be transformed into “an intercultural identity. In the case of women, it seems that social category is doubly attained by the effect of the ampleness of socio-cultural splitting and the intercultural hold on both the identity and the image of their bodies.Methodologically speaking, the adoption of a multidisciplinary procedure centered on a clinical approach led me on the one hand to focus on the multiple means of investigation, and on the other hand to seek other tools properly related to clinical practice. The confrontation of clinical analyses and the numerical results target revealing deep psychological lying itself to a response to the problematic. An analysis of the individual psychodynamic organization could offer clinical teachings focusing on psychological features of group members. In fact, the adoption of a clinical approach targets the identification of psychodynamic properties of members belonging to a study group. Finally, this work of research has the ambition to subscribe this project in the development of an intercultural clinical psychology

The purpose of the present study is to present and assess a brief psychosocial intervention with a group of Japanese-Brazilians who lived in Japan and returned to Brazil. Their return process and cultural representations of Brazil and Japan are explored. Theoretically the work is based on contributions from cross-cultural psychology and psychoanalytic concepts and techniques. Group participants generally felt return migration as difficult and expressed outrage towards Brazil´s present political, economic and social system, in addition to feeling like foreigners, unassertiveness and disorientation. Collective symbolic representations of Brazil as a country of warm human relations and Japan as a country of high technology and education also emerged, loaded with personal aspects, according to the unique experiences each one had. Reflective, informative and dynamic techniques such as preparation of posters, exhibition of theoretical concepts, display and discussion of a documentary migration between Brazil and Japan were useful tools, enabling the group to name their own distress. The area of continence and interlocution in this group helped identify processes where issues concerning conflicting experiences in the return and cultural identity could become objects of reflection and transformation. The findings indicate the contribution of such psycho-social intervention in the psychological process of the migratory experience, and the need to approach cultural styles and the social context in investigations in this area.

Role salience is the importance one gives to a role among other roles that one performs in his /her social context, and a certain amount of some work role salience is required in order to achieve adequate career choices. The present thesis aimed to identify and understand salience patterns in a Brazilian sample of adults and verify some associations between work role salience and other dimensions of career development in adults. Three studies were conducted. The first one adapted and validated the Salience Inventory, which measures salience from three dimensions: participation (active involvement to a role), commitment (affective attachment to a role) and value expectation (values expected to be found in a role) to five major roles: study, work, community service, home and family and spare time. The second study verified salience patterns on work and family roles, especially the marital and parental roles and its impact on work satisfaction among two groups: between married men and women with children / single men and women without children. The third study verified associations between work role salience, work values and career development tasks. The sample of participants comprised 111 men and 388 women with a college education, ages from 21 to 65 years old. The results showed that the Salience Inventory was adequate, that it had good psychometric properties and sensibility to work and life context changes: studying was regarded as part of the worker role and some changes in the traditional gender salience patterns were noticed. High work salience was associated with a bigger importance attributed to working values in general; mainly work achievement, work satisfaction and exploration and management career tasks. The importance of salience assessment to career interventions and study limitations is discussed and issues for further research are recommended.

Our presence from 1990 to 2010 as a social worker in Beaubreuil, district of the city of Limoges, Haute-Vienne, allowed us to support, observe and take part for over twenty years in the Vietnamese migration processes. All this time, we noted from a psychological perspective, that ruptures, resulting from the exile, then from the culture shock, were born by contacts with the host society, have given rise to individuals, complex problems including identity ones. In exile, to face the psychosocial risks caused by the instability of their psychic structure and their cultural system, the Vietnamese have invested public and private areas offered by the host culture. These approaches, multiple, allowed them in the redevelopment of these areas, to find, to recreate the elements perceived by them as fundamental in their native culture, necessary and essential to their work of psychic restructuring. In France, the cultural injunction of religious altars development in the private sphere has led them to reinterpret in a subjective way the question of the different components of their identity personal and social, cultural and religious The interactions between the native culture injunction and the space proposed by the host culture has engaged transformations, changes in the elaboration of religious altars. In that way, they are reflecting and are forming analyzers, particularly relevant to us, the intercultural exchange process

Children´s sensitiveness to another´s signals of need and the propensity for care confirm the inherent motivation for the spontaneous caregiving among them. This work analyses the caregiving behaviour among children under consideration of the children´s ideas about infant care, maternal socialization goals and cross-cultural comparisons. This study was conducted in the day care center of a rural village in the countryside of Sergipe, a state located in the northeast of Brazil. The participants of the study were 17 children, from 4 to 6 years old, and 27 mothers. Children´s behaviours during free activities were videotaped. Picture cards interviews were used to investigate their ideas about infant care. The mothers answered a socialization goals comparison scale. Results indicated that the highest occurrences of care were related to caressing, followed by supervision and help. For the categories help and caressing the care behaviours was directed towards same sex children. The picture-card chosen more frequently by the children was the one that exhibited the body contact system of care. Cross-cultural comparisons with German and Nso children, from Cameroon, revealed that the amount of words spoken by the children during the interview related to primary care, body contact and object stimulation were not significantly different among the three cultural contexts. The opposite was found for the amount of words related to body stimulation and face to face interaction. Mother´s socialization goals score indicated their preference for the relational goals. A cross-cultural analyse indicated that the Brazilian mothers socialization goals are closer to the ones of the mothers from New Delhi in comparison to the goals of mother from Berlin, Germany, rural Nso, Cameroon, and Gujarati, India. The number of people who take care of the child correlated positively with the mothers score for the relational socialization goals and the amount of caregiving behaviour among children in the category of caressing and supervision. Mothers´ socialization goals score correlated positively with the number of coded words related caressing spoken by the children during the interviews about care. These results indicate that the practices and values about care are inter-generation transmitted, reinforced by the cultural environment. The spontaneous among children from the village reveals aspects related to the way of life in the community, confirming that the development is context-dependent

The current study investigates intercultural differences in suggestibility between Black, Coloured and White students at a South African university using the Creative Imagination Scale (CIS), (Wilson & Barber, 1978). The CIS and a short biographical questionnaire measuring embeddedness in traditional culture were administered to three samples (N=20 each) from students belonging to the above cultural groups. Statistical tests were applied to determine the effects of ethnicity, cultural embeddedness and gender on CIS scores. The results indicate that these three dimensions do not significantly impact on CIS scores. Implications of the results obtained are discussed and ensuing recommendations for future related research are made.

This thesis deals, from an intercultural point of view, with the construction of identity in adolescence in a changing Cameroon. Based on an investigation on the relationship between psyche and culture and the study of the effects of the entanglement of traditional African and Western cultures, we have demonstrated in this work that the self-representation of the adolescent Cameroonian is modified, because it is now disconnected from the founding referent. Through enculturation, the extended African family had among other functions, to guide the adolescent towards adulthood, by providing him shelter and an identity. Culture, acting as a third party role that controls attachment, separation and joy in the fantasmatic interaction between the adolescent and his family, and even between the adolescent and his environment, is underpinned by the founding referent, meaning by the belief in an imaginary father, the ancestral father. Ignoring, refusing to accept or forgetting the founding referent (due to a failure in transmission or self-generation) is an obstacle to the construction of identity, thus leading the Cameroonian adolescent to a dead end. From a human culture perspective, we have concluded that the way in which a cultural mix occurs within a constantly evolving society is to be understood as an attack on subjective identity, insofar as it hinders the function of the ancestral father thus producing both the effects of separation and deadlock, which also allows a new perspective on the structuring of the subject. These effects, inevitably, imply the emergence of new pathologies and thus new modes of management in the adolescent clinic

This study analyses the reconstruction of indian schools in Roraima. I have started with the hypothesis that the exercise of citizenship of the intercultural indigenous population has assumed a prominent part in the construction, and an understanding of this is necessary. For this, in the first chapter I have discussed the historical process of the colonisation of the indigenous people of Roraima. To follow up, I have written about the fights and successes, especially in the educational area, since the middle of 1968 to the present day. In the second chapter I have made a discussion about the concept of intercultural indigenous citizenship with a view to giving a fundamental theory to the study. In the third chapter, I have focused on an analysis about the day-to-day life of the community researched (Anta II) and the three environments of the formation of the indigenous citizen, which are: the family, the community and the indigenous meeetings and assemblies. In the fourth and final chapter, I have discussed the school and as to whether the formulation of the curriculum has the social capacity to make a school an institution able to promote intercultural indigenous citizens. The Indigenous State School, Geraldo Julião, located in the indigenous community Anta II, Anta Indigenous land, in the municipality of Alto Alegre, State of Roraima was the school reference for the field research. The methodology was qualitative with a focus on bibliographical and field research; this final support being by interview and personal participation in meetings and assemblies

Intercultural negotiations are playing an increasing role in the globalisation nowadays. Business negotiators are now facing negotiations in which they have to meet people from all over the world because of the development of different market places. Sweden is particular case of this internationalization. Swedish negotiators have to use their skills with new collaborators. Their particularities are of relevance for any international negotiator who will have to negotiate with them.

Integrative Behavioral Couple Therapy (IBCT), an empirically supported and evidence-based third-wave behavioral approach for treatment of couples, is examined in this multiple case study. Specifically, the qualitative experiences of therapists using IBCT in their work with intercultural couples are examined through each therapist’s typed responses to open-ended questions. Each participating therapist in this study contributes by describing one case in which IBCT was used to help the couple navigate cultural differences as part of treatment. This study describes the various stressors faced by intercultural couples, therapists’ formulations of cultural differences, change processes and change mechanisms during treatment, and similarities and differences across therapists’ reports. The study concludes with participating therapists’ recommendations for treatment of intercultural couples in general, and recommendations for utilizing IBCT with intercultural couples. Lastly, implications for future research are provided.
