Abstract. Augmented reality (AR) enables to display situated geographical visualizations, i.e visualizations that use virtual elements that are displayed in a geographical location. The place where the data is displayed complements the visualization. Many applications that take advantage of AR and situated visualizations exist, but they differ in the visualizations they present, their relationship to the geographic locations and goals. To better understand why and how AR based situated geovisualization is used, we review 45 papers coming from Human Computer Interaction, Visualization and Geographical Information Science venues that present such applications. Inspired by existing classifications, we characterize these papers according to the data they visualize and the geographical distance between the visualization and the data the visualization represents. This analysis reveals existing opportunities for situated geovisualization applications using AR.

Resumen

To fully leverage the benefits of augmented and mixed reality (AR/MR) in supporting users, it is crucial to establish a consistent and well-defined situated visualization (SV) model. SV encompasses visualizations that adapt based on context, considering the relevant visualizations within their physical display environment. Recognizing the potential of SV in various domains such as collaborative tasks, situational awareness, decision-making, assistance, training, and maintenance, AR/MR is well-suited to facilitate these scenarios by providing additional data and context-driven visualization techniques. While some perspectives on the SV model have been proposed, such as space, time, place, activity, and community, a comprehensive and up-to-date systematization of the entire SV model is yet to be established. Therefore, there is a pressing need for a more comprehensive and updated description of the SV model within the AR/MR framework to foster research discussions.

Resumen

Dam safety control is a multifaceted activity that requires analysis, monitoring, and structural behavior prediction. It entails interpreting vast amounts of data from sensor networks integrated into dam structures. The application of extended reality technologies for situated immersive analysis allows data to be contextualized directly over the physical referent. Such types of visual contextualization have been known to improve analytical reasoning and decision making. This study presents DamVR, a virtual reality tool for off-site, proxied situated structural sensor data visualization. In addition to describing the tool’s features, it evaluates usability and usefulness with a group of 22 domain experts. It also compares its performance with an existing augmented reality tool for the on-site, immediate situated visualization of structural data. Participant responses to a survey reflect a positive assessment of the proxied situated approach’s usability and usefulness. This approach shows a decrease in performance (task completion time and errors) for more complex tasks but no significant differences in user experience scores when compared to the immediate situated approach. The findings indicate that while results may depend strongly on factors such as the realism of the virtual environment, the immediate physical referent offered some advantages over the proxied one in the contextualization of data.

We explore the design of situated visual links in outdoor augmented reality (AR) for connecting miniature buildings on a virtual map to their real-world counterparts. We first distill design criteria from prior work, then conduct two user studies to evaluate a set of proposed link designs to better understand users' preferences for different design choices of the links. In two user studies we evaluated, respectively, a set of link geometries in a virtual environment and a refined AR prototype in two different outdoor environments. The studies reveal that links help in identifying buildings in the environments. Participants prefer straight rather than curved links, simple and thin links to avoid information occlusion, and links and maps aligned with their direction of view. We recommend using a consistent color with a strong contrast to the background color for all links in a scene. To improve visibility, the diameter of links should grow with distance to the viewer and optional animated stripes can be placed on links. The findings of this study have the potential to bolster the development of various situated visualization applications, such as those used in urban planning, tourism, smart agriculture, and other fields.

Media visualization based on big cultural data, as “visualization without reduction” (Manovich 2010) is supposed to make data immediately and completely available, in contrast to classic data visualization, which visually translates information by means of “graphical primitives.” On the other hand, from a pure functionalist point of view, also the visual form of diagrams, charts, and graphs, being fully proportional to the data values it conveys, is transparent with respect to its object (cf. Tufte 1990, 1997, 2001, and Card, Mackinlay, Shneiderman 1999). In this paper, we will try to consider both media visualization and data visualization (across several examples, including some of Manovich’s and Accurat’s projects and New York Times graphics) as complex visual communication artifacts, not only from a purely informational point of view but from a semiotic point of view, by introducing a semiotic reflection on what we have proposed to call “discourse of data” (Manchia 2020a). From our perspective, situated in the methodological framework of visual semiotics and of the semiotics of scientific discourse, it might be interesting to pay attention to the whole process of constructing knowledge (and visual information) from data, understood as a chain of “devices of visualization” (Bastide 1985a, 1990 [1985b], 2001), investigating data as a channeled result, and also visualization strategies of specific–and oriented–discourses across data.

This article explores two examples of non-visibility as a way of describing the specificity of contemporary surfaces of visualization. The two cases are the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370, the scheduled passenger flight from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing, which lost contact with air traffic control on 8 March 2014 at 01:20 MYT, and the 276 Nigerian girls who went ‘missing’ at about the same time. The analysis is developed through an exploration of these examples in terms of the patterning of vision produced in recursive relations, or relations of feedback with the environment. We argue that changes in the organization of this feedback, which we describe as ‘rendition’, equip contemporary observers with both the capacity to see ‘close up at a distance’ and the capacity to be situated adjacent, next to or ‘beside from above’.

Chemical visualizations and models are special kinds of situated, inductive arguments. In this paper, I examine several historical case studies—an archive of images from museums, special collections, and popular magazines—as examples of emergent practices of physical modeling as theoretical play which became the basis for molecular biology and structural chemistry. Specifically, I trace a legacy of visualization tools that starts with Archibald Scott Cooper and Friedrich Kekulé in the late 1800s, crystallizes as material manipulatives in Kekulé’s student Jacobus Henricus Van’t Hoff and his folded paper “toys,” is legitimized in the California lab of Linus Pauling, and is glorified in the popular imaginary with James Watson and Francis Crick’s model of DNA. My tracing then follows several threads into contemporary modeling practices. I ultimately argue that modeling play, originally outside of the boundary of deductive, positivist science, is now an accepted mode of inductive reasoning in these related chemical fields.

Situated in the intersection of two emerging trends, online self- and peer assessment modes and learning analytics, this study explores the current landscape of software applications to support peer assessment activities and their necessary requirements to complete the learning analytics cycle upon the information collected from those applications. More particularly, the study focuses on the specific case of Moodle Workshops, and proposes the design and implementation of an application, the Moodle Workshop Data EXtractor (MWDEX) to overcome the data analysis and visualization shortcomings of the Moodle Workshop module. This research paper details the architecture design, configuration, and use of the application, and proposes an initial validation of the tool based on the current peer assessment practices of a group of learning analytics experts. The results of the small-scale survey suggest that the use of software tools to support peer assessment is not so extended as it would initially seem, but also highlight the potential of MWDEX to take full advantage of Moodle Workshops.

AbstractComplex material systems in which microstructure and microchemistry are nonuniformly dispersed require three-dimensional (3D) rendering(s) to provide an accurate determination of the physio-chemical nature of the system. Current scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM)-based tomography techniques enable 3D visualization but can be time-consuming, so only select systems or regions are analyzed in this manner. Here, it is presented that through high-efficiency multidimensional STEM acquisition and reconstruction, complex point cloud-like microstructural features can quickly and effectively be reconstructed in 3D. The proposed set of techniques is demonstrated, analyzed, and verified for a high-chromium steel with heterogeneously situated features induced using high-energy neutron bombardment.

This paper examines the history of the influential Interactive Image computer graphics showcase, which took place at museum and conference venues from 1987 to 1988. The authors present a preliminary exploration of the historical contexts that led to the creation of this exhibition by the Electronic Visualization Lab (EVL), which included the integrated efforts of both artists and computer scientists. In addition to providing historical details about this event, the authors introduce a media archaeology approach for examining the cultural and technological contexts in which this event is situated.

The mobilization of eye-tracking for use outside of the laboratory provides new opportunities for the assessment of pedestrian visual engagement with their surroundings. However, the development of data representation techniques that visualize the dynamics of pedestrian gaze distribution upon the environment they are situated within remains limited. The current study addresses this through highlighting how mobile eye-tracking data, which captures where pedestrian gaze is focused upon buildings along urban street edges, can be mapped as three-dimensional gaze projection heat-maps. This data processing and visualization technique is assessed during the current study along with future opportunities and associated challenges discussed.

The urge of gender equality had been going on for several decades and even though people were aware of it yet there was no significant result toward the effort. Not to neglect all the intended purposes of many studies previously, still somehow the significant differences were less shown in the practice. In order to identify such matter, hence the study was conducted. The visual illustrations in textbook were not only as the aesthetic aspect of one but also to represent matters that could easily be understood better by visualization. The gender representation was analyzed by its numbers of appearances, ratio and also the settings of each gender was situated in the illustrations. By the end of the study, it could be stated that the lack of female representation in appearance and ratio issue was still existing in the textbook. However, in most of the illustrations, both of the genders were situated in social settings in general though there were several in domestic ones. The further study was needed in order to analyze the other elements of the textbook.

This article demonstrates what may be gained from combining the walk-along method with the global positioning system (GPS) and geographical information system (GIS) when exploring the social and physical aspects of locally situated daily lives. It focuses on the premise and application of the spatial transcript technique, which allows for an integration of qualitative and GPS data generated while walking, and its subsequent visualization and analysis within GIS. It suggests that incorporating geospatial technologies into the walk-along method might serve as means to operationalize particular spatial sensitivity afforded by this mode of inquiry and effectively advance its utility for yielding spatially sensitive insights.

Contemporary urbanization, as a process extended beyond the cities, requires original design practices to contribute to the critical understanding and visualization of the multiple spatial and temporal layers that shape the territories. In this account, this article examines the geo-poetic mapping developed by the Valparaiso School of Architecture, as a radical means of exploring the territories and elaborating their palimpsestic representations. This contribution unfolds the geopoetic vision of the South American continent created in the sixties by the School of Valparaiso, in Chile, as fundamental groundwork to critically question the historic and ongoing urban occupation of territories and their representations following colonization. Besides, it presents the Travesías de Amereida, a collective and situated architectural study performed throughout the vast South American inland, as a unique geo-poetic practice in which freehand mapping becomes an original means of rethinking and redrawing the ever-changing American extent. Through the analysis of drawings made before, during, and after the travesías were undertaken between 1965 and 1985, this article outlines how the geo-poetic vision and mapping practices—that embodies iterative freehand drawings combining different temporality, spatiality, and situated experiences—have attempted to unveil the South American continent as a palimpsest: an open extent to trace the ever-changing footprints that reshape its content. To conclude, the article assesses the contribution of situated geo-poetic mapping as a critical design practice to study and visualize the ever-changing, multi-layered, and multi scalar-realities on virtually unknown territories of contemporary urbanization.

Natural convection from a heated disk situated at the bottom of a top-vented enclosure was studied experimentally. The experiments were performed in water (Pr ≅ 5) for parametric variations of the vent opening size, inner enclosure height, and disk-to-enclosure-wall tempearture difference (Rayleigh number). For comparison purposes, baseline data were obtained for an unvented enclosure and for the “infinite” case (no enclosure). The heat transfer data were supplemented by cross-vent temperature measurements and by flow visualization using the thymol-blue electrochemical technique. The experiments demonstrated that, for the range of parameters considered, the average Nusselt numbers could be correlated using a single correlation to within 8 percent. It was also found that the presence of the enclosure (vented or unvented) acted to reduce the Nusselt number, especially at the lower Rayleigh numbers. Flow visualization experiments revealed an unstable flow pattern in the vicinity of the vent that fluctuated in a nonperiodic manner between four basic modes. Temperature measurements revealed asymmetric mean cross-vent temperature profiles, with the mean temperature level increasing with decreasing vent size. The intensity of the temperature fluctuations in the vent opening also increased with decreasing vent size.

AbstractThe intellectual property is a concept of whose content and materialization find themselves more and more in the attention of the researchers and practitioners. The increased number of the works that approach such an issue is the argument that supports the previous affirmation. The intellectual property assets attract the interest of all the organizations from the local to the global level. The important pillars of the European Strategy 2020 formulated by the European Commission are based on the capitalization of the innovation knowledge and of the intellectual property. The increased interest towards innovation and intangible assets is given to the awareness of their economic potential. This is the reason why the evaluation and the valuation of the intellectual property capitalization propose an evaluation methodology unanimously accepted. The aim of this article is to present a visualization and evaluation instrument for the intellectual property assets, realized in a framework of a European research project with 15 partners from countries that are situated in the South Eastern Europe.

The nucleolar and centromeric DNAs of the fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe were visualized in the nucleus by fluorescence in situ hybridization using repetitive ribosomal and centromeric DNAs as the probes. The rDNAs were seen in the nuclear domain previously assigned as nucleolar, that is, the region into which the rod-like chromatin protrudes from the hemispherical chromosomal domain. Using mitotically-arrested cells containing condensed chromosomes, it was demonstrated that the rDNAs were present on the smallest chromosome III, consistent with genetic data. Using a centromeric repetitive element as the hybridization probe, the centromere of chromosome III, cen3, which contains the largest number of the repetitive elements, was visualized. The centromere in interphase cells is located near the periphery of the nucleus as a single dot. Early in mitosis, however, it divides into two and is situated in the middle of the short mitotic spindle. After spindle extension in anaphase, the centromeric DNA is present at both ends of the spindle, that is, near the spindle pole bodies. The movement of cen3 during mitosis (anaphase A and B) is discussed in relation to spindle dynamics and chromosome separation.

Abstract. 3D documentation and visualization of cultural heritage has a great significance in preserving the memories and history, and supports cultural tourism. It is of great importance to study the 3D reconstruction of cultural relics and historic sites. Preservation, visualization of valuable cultural heritage has always been a difficult challenge. With the developments of photogrammetry, terrestrial laser scanning, 3D models were able to obtained quickly and accurately. In this paper we present the survey and 3D modelling of an ancient temple, Banteay Srei, situated in Angkor, which has long been admired as a “Precious Gem” of Khmer Art for its miniature size of structures and exceptional refinement of the sculptures. The survey was performed with FARO Focus3D 330 and FARO Focus3D 120 terrestrial laser scanners, a micro unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) (DJI Phantom 4 Pro) and a digital camera (Nikon D90). Once the acquired scans were properly merged, a 3D model was generated from the global point cloud, and plans, sections and elevations were extracted from it for restoration purposes. A short multimedia video was also created for the “Digital Banteay Srei”. In the paper we will discuss all the steps and challenges addressed to provide the 3D model of Banteay Srei Temple.

Intraoperative tumor identification (extension/margins/metastases) via receptor-specific targeting is one of the ultimate promises of fluorescence-guided surgery. The translation of fluorescent tracers that enable tumor visualization forms a critical component in the realization of this approach. Ex vivo assessment of surgical specimens after topical tracer application could help provide an intermediate step between preclinical evaluation and first-in-human trials. Here, the suitability of the c-Met receptor as a potential surgical target in oral cavity cancer was explored via topical ex vivo application of the fluorescent tracer EMI-137. Freshly excised tumor specimens obtained from ten patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue were incubated with EMI-137 and imaged with a clinical-grade Cy5 prototype fluorescence camera. In-house developed image processing software allowed video-rate assessment of the tumor-to-background ratio (TBR). Fluorescence imaging results were related to standard pathological evaluation and c-MET immunohistochemistry. After incubation with EMI-137, 9/10 tumors were fluorescently illuminated. Immunohistochemistry revealed c-Met expression in all ten specimens. Non-visualization could be linked to a more deeply situated lesion. Tumor assessment was improved via video representation of the TBR (median TBR: 2.5 (range 1.8–3.1)). Ex vivo evaluation of tumor specimens suggests that c-Met is a possible candidate for fluorescence-guided surgery in oral cavity cancer.

Nerve stimulation and ultrasound have been introduced to the practice of regional anesthesia mostly in the last two decades. Ultrasound did not gain as much popularity as the nerve stimulation until a decade ago because of the simplicity, accuracy and portability of the nerve stimulator. Ultrasound is now available in most academic centers practicing regional anesthesia and is a popular tool amongst trainees for performance of nerve blocks. This review article specifically discusses the role of ultrasonography for deeply situated nerves or plexuses such as the infraclavicular block for the upper extremity and lumbar plexus and sciatic nerve blocks for the lower extremity. Transitioning from nerve stimulation to ultrasound-guided blocks alone or in combination is beneficial in certain scenarios. However, not every patient undergoing regional anesthesia technique benefits from the use of ultrasound, especially when circumstances resulting in difficult visualization such as deep nerve blocks and/or block performed by inexperienced ultrasonographers. The use of ultrasound does not replace experience and knowledge of relevant anatomy, especially for visualization of deep structures. In certain scenarios, ultrasound may not offer additional value and substantial amount of time may be spent trying to find relevant structures or even provide a false sense of security, especially to an inexperienced operator. We look at available literature on the role of ultrasound for the performance of deep peripheral nerve blocks and its benefits.

The objective of the proposal is to analyze what latent space is within a Deep-Learning system and how its visualization is capable of triggering a meaning-effect concerning the epistemology of big data. The latent space is the mathematical space that maps what a Neural Network has learned from the training dataset. It is the result of the compression of the input data and the step before the Neural Network’s output, a step that usually remains invisible to the human eye, rendering effective the promise of a transparent effect of reality generally promoted by Artificial Intelligence technologies. Precisely in contrast with this promise, the visualization of this complex spatiality makes accessible, and therefore intelligible, the epistemic and rhetorical relations inscribed within datasets, intended as archives that gather information. To achieve my objective, I will consider an artistic project realized by multimedia artist and coder Jake Elwes, Zizi-Queering the Dataset (2019), a multi-channel video where different facial portraits are shown in a morphing loop that visualizes what a Generative Adversarial Network has learned from the re-training of a dataset containing portraits with another one containing facial images of drag and non-binary individuals. This artistic gesture has led to a series of epistemic issues concerning big data and their situated and ideological meaning.

In 2007 the special research program HiMAT - History of Mining Activities in Tyrol and adjacent areas, focussing on environment and human societies, was established at the University of Innsbruck as an interdisciplinary and international research project, sponsored by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF). During late medieval and early modern times, the mining area of Schwaz in Tyrol became famous in Europe, due to the large scale exploitation of copper and silver bearing fahlores, going along with the development of high technologies in the field of mining and metallurgy. In that period, Schwaz was even called “the mother of all mines”.In the area of Schwaz/Brixlegg the main focus of our research project is on early traces of copper mining and metallurgy dating back to the late Bronze Age. Such traces are still preserved, especially in boundary areas of the main ore deposits. On the basis of previous surveys a little valley called “Maukental” was chosen for archaeological investigations, because within this small area the entire copper production process of the late Bronze Age can be studied in detail. During the past two years, the Institute of Archaeology and Surveying and the Geoinformation Unit of the University of Innsbruck worked together in this area. One object of interest was a late Bronze Age ore dressing site situated in a former peat-bog. In this place the advantageous environment preserved fragile wooden structures and artefacts which could be digitally documented in the condition of retrieval.

The documentation of the archaeological heritage through 3D models to know ancient findings, has become a common practice within the international panorama. Using minimal hardware, as well as its ease of use in almost every environmental condition, make 3D sampling solutions based on Multiple View Stereo (MVS) matching and Structure from Motion techniques ideal for on-site documentation of excavations or emergencies. Moreover, the availability of inexpensive platforms for web-based visualization represents great benefit in the field of archaeology, where generally the low budged and the limitation of more complex instruments are a must. The case study presented in these pages, experienced in Petra, Jordan, moves towards this direction. In the close proximity of the El- Khasneh façade, is situated an excavation where two entrance, well preserved, give access to the Tomb of Pharaoh. The documentation described in these pages has the twofold objective of providing the research community with a priceless dataset, acquired for one of the most important heritage of the world that is partially still unknown and to share on line these computations. This work confirms how cultural heritage documentation and dissemination of architectural rests, that are important for tourism and their interactive visualization, can strongly benefit from the creation of 3D models and their sharing on the web. This particular archaeological setting is an interesting base for investigation, given the complexity of the structure and its precarious condition.

The area is known as a former military camp from Thirty Years’ War in 17th Century. There is an extensive underground compound with one entrance corridor and two transverse, situated approximately 2 to 5 m under the local development. The object has been partly documented by geodetic polar method, intersection photogrammetry, image-based modelling and laser scanning. Data have been analyzed and methods have been compared. Then the 3D model of object has been created and compound with cadastral data, orthophoto, historical maps and digital surface model which was made by photogrammetric method using remotely piloted aircraft system. Then the measuring has been realized with ground penetrating radar. Data have been analyzed and the result compared with real status. All the data have been combined and visualized into one 3D model. Finally, the discussion about advantages and disadvantages of used measuring methods has been livened up. The tested methodology has been also used for other documentation of historical objects in this area. This project has been created as a part of research at EuroGV. s.r.o. Company lead by Ing. Karel Vach CSc. in cooperation with prof. Dr. Ing. Karel Pavelka from Czech Technical University in Prague and Miloš Gavenda, the renovator.

Most acoustical holography techniques are developed to visualize sound sources or reconstruct sound field in a free-space environment, where no boundary reflected or scattered sound are present. However, in some engineering applications, a sound scatter is an inseparable part of source mechanism. For example, for a centrifugal fan, the aerodynamic noise sources are the turbulent pressure inside the fan shell, but the source distribution is significantly altered if the fan shell is removed. Thus, in order to visualize the sources inside the fan shell by holography methods based on exterior sound measurements, the measurements need to be performed with the presence of the shell (which is a sound scatter). This obviously violates the free-space assumption for most acoustical holography methods. In this work, traditional free-space equivalent source methods are extended to visualize acoustic sources situated in an enclosure with openings based on sound measurements exterior to the enclosure. The key step is to replace the free-space Green’s function used in traditional equivalent source methods by a Green’s function that satisfies the boundary condition of the apertured enclosure. Simulations are performed to prove the concept of the proposed acoustical holography method.

During a research project in which we developed a machine learning (ML) driven visualization system for non-ML experts, we reflected on interpretability research in ML, computer-supported collaborative work and human-computer interaction. We found that while there are manifold technical approaches, these often focus on ML experts and are evaluated in decontextualized empirical studies. We hypothesized that participatory design research may support the understanding of stakeholders' situated sense-making in our project, yet, found guidance regarding ML interpretability inexhaustive. Building on philosophy of technology, we formulated explanation strategies as an empirical-analytical lens explicating how technical explanations mediate the contextual preferences concerning people's interpretations. In this paper, we contribute a report of our proof-of-concept use of explanation strategies to analyze a co-design workshop with non-ML experts, methodological implications for participatory design research, design implications for explanations for non-ML experts and suggest further investigation of technological mediation theories in the ML interpretability space.

In this paper flow control around the Ahmed body with the rear slant angle of 25° studied by using the plasma actuator system situated in middle of the rear slant surface. Experiments conducted in a wind tunnel in two free stream velocities of U = 10 m/s and U = 20 m/s using steady and unsteady excitations. Pressure distribution and total drag force was measured and smoke flow visualization carried out in this study. The results showed that at U = 10 m/s using plasma actuator suppress the separated flow over the rear slant slightly and be effective on pressure distribution. Also total drag force reduces in steady and unsteady excitations for 3.65% and 2.44%, respectively. At U = 20 m/s, using plasma actuator had no serious effect on the pressure distribution and total drag force.

Capturing team processes, which are highly dynamic and quickly unfold over time, requires methods that go beyond standard self-report measures. However, quantitative observational methods are challenging when teams are observed in the wild, that is, in their full-situated context. Technologically advanced tools that enable high-resolution measurements in the wild are rare and, when they exist, expensive. The present research advances high-resolution measurement of team processes by introducing a technological application—the Communication Analysis Tool (CAT)—that captures fine-grained interactions in real workplace contexts. We introduce four core features of CAT: (a) customized coding measures, (b) session-based feedback on interrater reliability, (c) visualization and feedback options for displaying team dynamics, and (d) an export function to conduct advanced statistical analyses on effective team processes. We illustrate these core features using data from an organizational field project on multidisciplinary teams tasked with diagnosing patients with uncommon and highly complex medical conditions.

Analyzing a conference, especially one as young and focused as LAK, provides the opportunity to observe the structure and contributions of the scientific community around it. This work will perform a Scientometric analysis, coupled with a more in-depth manual content analysis, to extract this insight from the proceedings and program of LAK 2013. Authorship analysis reveals an open and international community, while internal citation analysis provides evidence of the construction of a body of knowledge central to Learning Analytics. The analysis of the content of the papers found five main topics: visualization, behaviour analysis, social learning analytics, learning analytics for MOOCs, and learning analytics issues (ethical, scalability, etc.), as well as papers reflecting on the field itself. We discuss representative papers presented at the conference, highlighting trends and new developments. Learning analytics is a diverse multidisciplinary field with an emerging interdisciplinary core, well situated to benefit from productive dialogue concerning its scope and purpose and to reflect on the pedagogies and epistemologies implied by its methods.

Abstract Ventral thoracic meningiomas are rare entities in which the spinal cord is attenuated and draped over the meningioma symmetrically. This is a challenging surgical entity compared to typical intradural meningiomas, which nearly always eccentrically displace the cord. In these more common meningiomas, surgical access is fairly straightforward as the meningioma is often visualized upon opening the meninges. Resection can be more safely performed with the cord largely shifted. In cases of ventral meningioma, the tumor is hidden ventral to the spinal cord, and techniques to safely mobilize the spinal cord must be utilized. We demonstrate that an entirely posterior approach allows complete resection of a ventrally situated mass. After careful identification and sectioning of the dentate ligament at multiple levels on the right side of the canal, we then suture and rotate the dentate ligament at each site, thereby allowing progressive visualization of the ventral meningioma. A narrow, but viable, working corridor to the tumor allows safe debulking. Once it is felt that the tumor can no longer be safely excised through the created corridor, we then disconnect our dentate sutures and move to the other side of the canal. Similarly, the dentate is sectioned and sutured so that the contralateral aspect of the meningioma can be visualized and debulked. The tumor can then be safely removed. A standard posterior approach and midline durotomy allows this bilateral approach to a ventrally situated meningioma and, therefore, in our mind, represents a safe and also highly effective road to resection. Patient consent was obtained prior to publication.

The report presents the film 10 th century. The South of the Royal Palace in Great Preslav. It consists of two parts – 10 th century. The Royal Palace in Great Prelsav. The Square with the Pinnacle and The Ruler’s Lodgings. 3D and virtual reconstructions of an architectural ensemble – part of the Preslav Royal Court unearthed during archaeological researches are used in the film. 3D documentaries have already gained popularity around the world and are well received by both scholars and the public at large. One of the distinguished tourist destinations in Bulgaria is Great Preslav – capital of the mediaeval Bulgarian state and a significant cultural center of the European Southeast in 9 th – 10 th centuries, too. The first part of the film is created with the financial support of America for Bulgaria Foundation and the second – with the funding of Bulgarian National Science Fund at the Ministry of Education, Youth and Science. A team of almost 20 members worked on the film, including computer specialists, professional actors, and translators in the four main European languages – English, German, French and Russian, Trima Sound Recording Studio. In the first part of the 3D film are shown a segment of the Royal Palace, the square with the water pinnacle and the adjacent buildings – an important structural element of the town-planning of the Preslav Court center in the 10th century. In the second part the accent is the southern part of the Royal Palace in Great Preslav, where the personal residence of the Preslav ruler’s dynasty is situated. The work on the virtual reconstruction was done by Virtual Archaeology club at the Mathematical School, Shumen. Due to the efforts of its members it is now clear how the square in front of the southern gate looked like.

This study aims to map the development and direction of research on tax and MSMEs and gain insight into future research prospects. The analysis was carried out based on the bibliometric method with the support of Publish or Perish and VOSviewer software and the Google Scholar database. Data was processed on the metadata of research publications from 2000 to 2022 across 998 journals. The results show that journal publications commenced in 2006, with fluctuating trends until 2016. Post-2016, there is consistent growth, with the highest spike of 280% in 2012 and a notable dip of -28.57% in 2011. Geographically, the research landscape is predominantly situated in Asia and Africa, with significant contributions from Indonesia, India, and Nigeria. India emerges as a standout, both in terms of prolific researchers and extensive collaborations. The network visualization of terms identifies eight distinct clusters, with emerging themes encompassing the profound impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the transition towards a new normal, issues about empowerment and sustainability, and the crucial aspect of MSME tax compliance.

Abstract Photospheric faculae are markers of the solar magnetic field, appearing as bright regions along the edges of granules on the Sun’s surface. Using data from the Debrecen Solar Faculae Database, we investigated the spatiotemporal distribution of photospheric faculae between 2010 May 1 and 2014 December 31 and found the following. (i) At lower latitudes, there is an enhanced abundance of faculae appearing as stripes at given Carrington longitudes, which are interpreted as indicative of the presence of active longitudes. (ii) At higher latitudes, we identified so-called crisscross patterns of facular appearance. These patterns are likely the result of faculae in regions situated along the boundaries of supergranules. Last but not least, (iii) various periods of oscillatory phenomena were identified in this facular data set, including a longer periodic range consistent with the quasi-biennial oscillations and shorter ones with periods of 4–12 days. Our findings are supported by the visualization of a simple heuristic thought experiment and more complex dynamo simulations, strengthening the proposed interpretation of the three observed solar phenomena reported.

This study investigates the geospatial distribution of filling stations and assesses their relative distances from one another, proximity to residential houses and public institutions, and the associated environmental health risks in Idah township using Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The importance of land use/land cover information for planning and management activities at various levels underscores the need for GIS tools. The research design adopted survey methods, incorporating direct observation and measurements. Google Earth imagery provided an overview of the study area, while the Global Positioning System (GPS) instrument captured the coordinates of filling stations. The QGIS 3.22 software was utilized for plotting and map production. The study's findings revealed that filling stations tend to cluster along major roads and are often situated in close proximity to residential buildings, suggesting a potential impact on citizens' lives. The integration of spatial and attribute data through GIS facilitated better visualization and decision-making processes, enabling faster and more accurate conclusions. By creating a comprehensive database, valuable information can be derived to safeguard human health and well-being.

Resumen

The study described how the character based-learning of anti-corruption was situated in the English classroom by utilizing and creating digital comics in the Indonesian EFL context. The subjects of the study were the first semester students of State Islamic Institute of Kediri (IAIN Kediri). The research method used for this study was a descriptive qualitative research. It described the implementation of character based-learning of anti-corruption through digital comics which was explained in details from the beginning to the end of the study. Furthermore, the data were analyzed qualitatively. The data obtained from the results of recording on teaching learning process, the students’ participations, and the students’ scores on the project result of digital comics. It showed that the digital comics could raise the students’ enthusiasm to study English which could be shown from the result of observation during the teaching and learning process, the activeness of students’ participations in discussions and presentations, and the outstanding result of students’ creations on digital comics. The number of respondents in the research are 34 students. Based on the data on the category of content, grammar and choice of words, it showed that out of 34 students, 88% students performed excellently in organizing the story and delivering anti-corruption messages, while 12% of them performed good. Further, in terms of visualization, the researcher found that 32 students (94%) showed excellent visualization and arrangement of pictures or characters while 2 students (6%) performed good. At last, in presenting the comics, 71% of the students were excellent in fluency, mastery, and interactive performances, 8 students (23%) performed good, and the rest performed fairly good.

The Laboulbeniales are a group of lesser-known fungi. They occur as ectoparasites on the exoskeleton of various arthropod species, mainly beetles, cockroaches, ants, dipterans and a few millipede genera appearing as hairs/bristles coming out of their cuticle. They are small, non-mycelial fungi forming compact multicellular thalli, starting from a two-celled sheathed ascospore which continues to envelop the mature thallus. The fungi, being obligate, spend their entire life cycle on their insect hosts. The present study attempted to locate the Laboulbeniales fungi in the common insects of India, isolate them and identify them based on morphology. Different species of insects; Carabid beetles - Stenolophus sp., Bembidion sp., Black ants - Camponotus sp., and Earwigs - Labidura riparia; were collected from different habitats of damp garden soil, river banks, light sources and entomological collection museum situated as different sites New Delhi. The insects were scrutinized for the presence of fungi through light and scanning electron microscopy. The morphological features of each fungus were recorded, and the species were characterized. The studies showed the presence of Laboulbenia anaplogenii and L. stenolophi on the legs of Stenolophus sp.; L. egens on Bembidion sp. legs; L. camponoti on the wings of black ants and Dimeromyces anisolabis on the legs of earwigs. The identification was made primarily based on the size, shape and structure of basal foot, receptacles, antheridia and foot of the thallus or it’s remnant scar found on the insect cuticle. This is the first Indian report of conducting scanning imaging of the Laboulbeniales fungi.

This paper explains how a relatively simple analytical spatial algorithm and a GIS visualization of inter-municipal migration patterns revitalized the negotiations for a formal merger (called Holland Rijnland) between six municipalities in the urbanized Leiden Region and ten municipalities in the adjacent rural Bulb Region, both situated in Randstad Holland. Though the regional housing market was just one of the negotiation topics, the political discussion around it almost stymied the entire merger. We discovered a lack of knowledge about three key questions: Would the new merger function as one housing market region within the broader context of Randstad Holland? Do the original two regions interact at all? Or do lower-order regions exist instead? We answered these questions with the aid of individual migration data from Statistics Netherlands and by applying a method called Intramax Clustering in the GIS Flowmap programme. We found that the intended merger is indeed a housing market region; that interaction between the two regions is limited; and that lower-order housing market regions do exist. These findings helped to restart the negotiations; since 2004 Holland Rijnland has been a fact.

Numerical Analysis of Liquid Steel Flow Structure in the One Strand Slab Tundish with Subflux Turbulence Controller and Dam The paper present the results of computational calculation showing liquid steel flow in the tundish. The one-strand slab tundish is used to casting slabs. The internal work space of tundish was modified by two flow control devices (FCDs). The first device is subflux turbulence controller situated in the pouring tundish zone. The second FCD is a dam with two holes. The dam presently using in the industrial conditions was modified by changing a height. Adapted to internal work space new flow control devices were located in the tundish virtual model. Numerical model and computational grid of tundish was performed in the Gambit application. The visualization of interaction of flow control devices on hydrodynamic conditions was received from numerical simulation. As a results of the computations carried out, liquid steel flow fields, turbulence intensity maps, steel temperature maps and RTD curves (E and F) were obtained. On the distribution of RTD characteristics, percentage contributions of stagnant, plug, ideal mixing flow type, and transition grade zone were calculated.

Resumen

This article empirically provides a global overview of physical literacy, which allows for the understanding of the structure of the epistemic community studying literacy for healthy living. Publications registered in the Web of Science are analyzed using bibliometrics (spatial, productive, and relational) based on data from 391 records, published between 2007 and April 2022, applying five bibliometric laws and using VOSviewer software for data and metadata processing and visualization. In terms of results, we observe an exponential increase in scientific production in the last decade, with a concentration of scientific discussion on physical literacy in seven journals; a production distributed in 46 countries situated on the five continents, but concentrated in Canada and the United States; co-authored research networks composed of 1256 researchers but with a production concentrated of around 2% of these, and an even smaller number of authors with high production and high impact. Finally, there are four thematic blocks that, although interacting, constitute three specific knowledge production communities that have been delineated over time in relation to health and quality of life, fitness and physical competence, education, and fundamental movement skills.

This paper aims to unveil an American couple’s, Andi and Becky (Psudonyms), experiences when learning Bahasa Indonesia for foreign speakers in Indonesia (BIPA) informally aside from their non- formal learning. They were undertaking a BIPA course hosted by a language center running under a higher education institution. The research in this paper employed a narrative inquiry method of research mainly through interview to cast more light on their informal learning of BIPA. From the findings, it was revealed that they perceived informal BIPA learning as important as the course they were taking and they believed that culture was part of language learning therefore in their views, experiencing it at the natural context would be the best way of learning the culture. Furthermore, when carrying out informal learning to support their BIPA course, they hung out to public place to make exchanges with local people, invited local friends to come home and to help them practice speaking, always took a small notebook of new vocabulary list, the visualization of vocabulary through drawing, writing a journal, listening to Indonesian music, and watching YouTube video. Most of these findings were consistent with the account of sociocultural perspective and situated cognition on learning.
