Texto completoOggi le metodologie matematiche innovative, proprie della teoria della complessità e le tecnologie informatiche, nel contesto del softcomputing, possono fornire un utile supporto per lo studio, la definizione e successiva realizzazione di strumenti di supporto alle decisioni. Tali sistemi di supporto alle decisioni possono essere in grado di fornire non soltanto, come accadeva nel passato, la migliore decisione relativa ad una data tematica, ma soprattutto una strategia decisionale in grado di permettere il raggiungimento di un prefissato obiettivo, utilizzando traiettorie decisionali ottime. Mentre nel passato, l’informatica era in grado di fornire un decisore elettronico, oggi grazie alla teoria della complessità opportunamente impiegata in infrastrutture tecnologiche di softcomputing è possibile ottenere strumenti innovativi utili alla pianificazione; fornendo, altresì, non solo una decisione, che normalmente è già nota all’esperto di un dato settore, ma anche e soprattutto una strategia decisionale frutto della competizione di un grande numero di soluzioni possibili simulate just in time. Inoltre, molto spesso, il decisore deve condividire le sue scelte con altri enti o entità deputate ad altre funzioni, quindi la soluzione innovativa qui proposta permette la costruzione di strategie decisionali ottime sia singolarmente che rispetto ad un decisore di governance, di management ed operational, che sia in un dato ente o che sia distribuito su più enti. Il risultato è uno studio che dopo aver inquadrato le tematiche generali sulla teoria dei giochi, i modelli di descrizione della complessità ed i processi stocastici self-similari, la teoria della decisione, i sistemi di supporto alle decisioni, le diverse metodologie e tecnologie del soft-computing, analizza gli aspetti salienti e di dettaglio per la realizzazione di un motore computazionale innovativo ed avanzato di supporto alle decisioni in ambito complesso per fornire specifica risposta all’obiettivo offrendo elementi di dettaglio e di esempio per una specifica realizzazione in diversi ambiti applicativi, grazie al suo potere di astrazione. Several strategies have been considered to mitigate the problem studying the variables related to mould growth and mycotoxin production. This thesis focuses on the development and validation of mechanistic models to predict mycotoxins (deoxinivalenol, fumonisins and aflatoxins) contamination in cereals (maize/ wheat) based on meteorological data. The first chapter introduce modelling theory, and patho-systems analysed. Chapter 2 focuses on trichothecenes and zearalenone occurrence in wheat produced in Italy. Predictive performance of empirical and mechanistic models for deoxnivalenol contamination in wheat were discussed in chapter 3. Chapter 4 described fumonisins and aflatoxins occurrence in maize grown in Italy. Chapters 5 and 6 analised the patho-system maize-Aspergillus flavus; the former focuses on the dynamics of A. flavus sporulation the lalatter on the development of a mechanistic model to predict aflatoxin produced by A. falvus. Another mechanistic model for Fusarium ear rot and fumosin production in maize (chapter 7). The last chapter summarised the activity done in the European project MYCORED in which several countries worldwide were involved and wheat and/or maize samples collected with data necessary for model validation.

Also in the area of pest control for this crop, serious criticalities emerged in connection with the practical application of phytosanitary treatments, not only due to the large size of the trees and the difficulties of accessibility that characterize many olive groves but also due to the poor functional regulation of sprayers and their little widespread instrumental control. Therefore, a system to support the calibration of sprayers was also developed.

Texto completoIn the last years, due to technological progress, optimization methods based on mathematical programming and heuristic algorithms have consistently improved their efficiency. It is now possible to obtain, in a large variety of problems, optimal or sub-optimal solutions in acceptable computational time. Emerging trends, driven by Industry 4.0 and Big Data revolutions, are pushing to combine optimization, at its purest mathematical level, with data science and decision support systems. The research conducted in this PhD thesis investigates the creation of decision support systems for the selection of optimal or sub-optimal solutions to optimize distributes services. The research presents the use of mathematical models and heuristic techniques to solve issues related to relevant problems, such as Personnel Scheduling and Vehicle Routing. The addressed case studies are derived from real business cases from Coopservice scpa, a large provider of services in relevant sectors, including healthcare and industry.

Texto completoThe thesis focuses on environmental sustainability principles applied to the viticultural sector. The main goals are: (i) analysis of the literature background on agri-environmental indicators, (ii) development of an innovative methodology to assess environmental impacts of viticulture, and (iii) testing of the methodology in practical cases. The introduction is dedicated to the analysis of the agri-environmental indicators and the related EU policies, sustainable wine issues, and decision support systems for a sustainable viticulture. In the second part, a rigorous and complete methodology is developed to assess the sustainability level of viticulture in all the phases of the grape growing using both agronomic indicators and the Life Cycle Assessment approach. Six impact categories were identified: human health, air, soil, biodiversity conservation, energetic consumptions, and water use. Each category is composed by sub-indicators, for a total of 21 sub-indicators, each of them having a score (between 0 and 5) and a defined weight on the overall sustainability score (between 0 and 5). In the third part, the methodology was tested in practical cases within the European project “InnoVine”. The study is carried out following the guidelines from international standards and from documented literature sources for the assessment of the environmental performance and elaborating original methodologies for the input data collection, the quantification of the impacts, and the interpretation of the results. Finally, the results obtained confirm: i) the methodology validity in quantifying the impacts of different grape production practices on the environment, and ii) the possibility to implement the methodology in a decision support system for a sustainable viticulture.

Texto completoHealthcare services are strongly dependent on the availability of equipment and medicines, as shortages can lead to treatments interruptions, reduced capacity, or undesirable delays. In the last decades, centralized group purchasing organizations, coupled with an outsourced pharmaceutical logistic, have replaced traditional approaches to avoid shortages and associated negative effects. In Italy, this process started in the 1990s with a regionalization conducted by the Italian National Health Service. To make centralization strategy works, however, a good integration between warehouses and delivery infrastructure is fundamental. This means taking many decisions at all managerial levels. As these decisions are hard to be evaluated by hand, a computational tool becomes essential. In this thesis, we present algorithms and development processes used to create a decision support system for a pharmaceutical logistic company specialized in storage and distribution of pharmaceutical products in Italy. In the first chapter, the software conception and implementation are presented, including details about technology integration. In the second chapter, the transportation part of the system is presented, with a focus on the computational approach to solve two closely related problems, a rich vehicle routing problem and a truck and driver scheduling problem. In the third chapter, we present a storage allocation problem that has special constraints associated with the pharmaceutical logistic, and an Iterated Local Search (ILS) based algorithm to solve it. In conclusion, some possible system improvements and future research directions are shown. Additionally, the appendix contains two chapters that describe the results obtained in parallel researches developed by the author. The first appendix presents an Adaptative Large Neighbourhood Search heuristic combined with a Set Partitioning model to solve a multiobjective dial-a-flight problem. In this problem, a heterogeneous fleet of airplanes must be routed to carry passengers to a required destination. The objective is to minimize user inconvenience (measured by delays and intermediary stops) and costs. Each airplane has different speed, fuel consumption, capacity, and costs. The problem contains some hard-operational constraints such as airplane maximum weight (including passengers), safety, unavailability of fuel in some airports and time windows. The second appendix proposes four mathematical models and an ILS based heuristic to optimize a scheduling problem with position-dependent deterioration and maintenance activities. In this problem, a set of jobs must be scheduled on a set of parallel unrelated machines in order to minimize the makespan. Each job has an individual runtime and causes a deterioration on the machine that makes the runtimes of the next jobs rise by a cumulative factor. Maintenances, which have significant runtimes, can be scheduled between two jobs, making the machine recover its full performance. Overall, the contributions of this thesis lie in the proposal of algorithms and software to solve very complex routing and scheduling problems deriving from real-world decision problems.

Texto completoDuring the three years of the PhD, carried out in conjunction with the usual work within my company (Consorzio Agrario Terrepadane, supplier of means and services for agriculture), the knowledge on decision support systems was deepened (DSS, Decision Support Systems) for the cultivation of vines according to the principles of sustainable viticulture, including integrated production. During this research, some representative farms that produce grape of the work area (Val Nure, Val Tidone and Oltrepò Pavese valleys) were identified during the season. Information relating to the risk of fungal infection or the presence of pests generated by the Vite.net® DSS for these farms, together with the data collected in the vineyards through sensors, visual monitoring, the integration of new georeferenced detection and mapping technologies, have made possible to have a greater knowledge of the evolution of the crop in the area and therefore. During this work all aspects related to the evaluation and diffusion of innovation in agriculture were studied in depth, as well as the impacts and sustainability of agricultural processes, with particular attention to the protection of plants from pathogens, to the improvement of effectiveness of defense lines through the study of new strategies and product positioning.

Texto completoA smart home is a residence equipped with technologies that facilitate monitoring of residents, promote independence and increase the quality of life. In general, smart homes control the operations of the home environment and automatically adapt it to its inhabitants’ needs. The smart home reasoning system (SHRS) is in charge of determining the automatic control and adaptation operations of the home system. Recently, there has been extensive research concerning different aspects of the SHRS. However, there is a clear lack of systematic investigation targeted at these systems. To close the gap, in the first part of this thesis we explore the SHRS domain. For this reason, we applied the systematic literature review (SLR) method by conducting automatic and manual searches on six electronic databases, and in-depth analysis of 135 articles from the literature. From the SLR, this thesis identifies that about 43% of smart homes are designed to provide general home automation services. It also presents twelve major requirements and features of the SHRS. In addition, the SLR finds out that 55.5% of the research contributions in SHRS domain are theoretical, and 51.5% of them are based on symbolic artificial intelligence techniques. Further, it characterizes the usage and application trends of different reasoning techniques in smart home domain, and evaluates the major assumptions, strengths, and limitations of the proposed systems in the literature. Additionally, it discusses the challenges of reasoning in smart home environments. Finally, it underlines the importance of utilizing hybrid reasoning approaches and the need to handle uncertainty and inconsistency issues of the SHRS, as well as overlapping, simultaneous and conflicting multiple inhabitants’ activities and goals in the smart home environment. The SLR identifies reasoning under uncertainty as one of the major challenges of SHRSs. Uncertainty is inevitable in smart home environments as sensors may read inaccurate data or due to the existence of unobserved variables for privacy reasons. Furthermore, the dynamic nature of the home environment and vague human communications may result in ambiguous, incomplete and inconsistent contextual information, which ultimately lead the smart home system into uncertainty. With this in mind, the second part of this thesis tackle some of the challenges of uncertainty, in particular, uncertainty due to vague human communication and missing information in ambient intelligence environments. For this, we proposed probabilistic multi-agent system architecture for reasoning under uncertainty in smart home environments. The proposed smart architecture is based on the notion of multi-agent systems (MAS) technologies and probabilistic logic programming techniques. Afterwards, we show how the probabilistic reasoning technique enables the agents to reason under uncertainty. Furthermore, we discuss how intelligent agents enhance their decision-making process by exchanging information about missing data or unobservable variables using agent interaction protocols. Besides, when an agent lacks the necessary computational resources to accomplish its reasoning tasks, we illustrate how it can take advantage of the interaction protocols and delegate the tasks for other agents in the system. In general, we demonstrate that the combination of MAS technologies and probabilistic logic programming can help in building a reasoning system, which is capable of performing well under vague inhabitant commands and missing information in a partially observable environment. In the final part of the thesis, we tackled inconsistency issues in SHRSs, by identifying five major sources of inconsistencies in rule-based SHRSs. Specifically, we define, formalize and demonstrate how conflicting, duplicate, overlapping, self-looping and circular rules in SHRSs can be detected using satisfiability modulo theories. The proposed method was validated empirically using rules collected from a real-world SHRS as a model. The experimental results provide compelling evidence for the reliability and effectiveness of the proposed solution. The method presented in this part of the thesis can have multiple applications. First, it can be used to build a static (off-line) rule-based reasoning system verification tool. Second, it can be integrated as a rule validation component of the reasoning system. Besides, with some adaptation, the method can be directly used to verify the consistency properties of reasoning systems in other domains.

Il primo paradigma affrontato è la gestione integrata delle risorse idriche, caso studio è il progetto BRAHMATWINN; il secondo paradigma è la gestione del rischio, con un caso studio fondato su un progetto di armonizzazione delle conoscenze in corso in Guatemala. Tre sono i risultati: 1. la tabella integrata degli indicatori, mediante la quale si è stabilita una relazione biunivoca fra risultati della ricerca e necessità degli attori locali; 2. la matrice per l’analisi delle carenze di politiche per il rischio inondazione, in cui sono identificati ritardi nella legislazione e nella sua implementazione; 3. la mappa cognitiva totale, attraverso cui si possono raccogliere ed analizzare le visioni che gli attori locali hanno sul rischio e sulla sua gestione, per identificare e migliorare le sinergie possibili fra istituzioni che si occupano di gestione del rischio.
