Resumen
Molecular nanomagnets have been undergoing development for 20 years since the first single-molecule magnet (SMM), Mn 12 Ac, was characterized as the molecule-behaved magnet. The multi-disciplinary scientists promoted the magnetic characteristics to be more suitable for use in information science and spintronics. The concept of molecular nanomagnets has also evolved to include single-chain magnets (SCMs), single-ion magnets (SIMs) and even magnetic molecules that showed only slow magnetic relaxation, in addition to the initial cluster-type SMMs. In this review, several aspects, including SMMs, SCMs and SIMs, are introduced briefly through some representative examples. In particular, the contribution of Chinese chemists is highlighted in the design, synthesis and understanding of various types of molecular nanomagnets.

Resumen
Polyoxometalates are robust and versatile multidentate oxygen-donor ligands, eminently suitable for coordination to trivalent lanthanoid ions. To date, 10 very different structural families of such complexes have been found to exhibit slow magnetic relaxation due to single-molecule magnet (SMM) behaviour associated with the lanthanoid ions. These families encompass complexes with between one and four of the later lanthanoid ions: Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, and Yb. The lanthanoid coordination numbers vary between six and eleven and a range of coordination geometries are evident. The highest energy barrier to magnetisation reversal measured to date for a lanthanoid–polyoxometalate SMM is Ueff/kB = 73 K for the heterodinuclear Dy–Eu compound (Bu4N)8H4[DyEu(OH)2(γ-SiW10O36)2].

Resumen
The complexes of lanthanide metals, especially dysprosium, can generally exhibit excellent magnetic properties. By means of modifying ligands, dual functions or even multi-functions can be achieved. Here, we synthesized an eight-coordinate Dy(III) complex 1, [Dy(HL-o)2(MeOH)2](ClO4)3·4.5MeOH, which is single-molecule magnet (SMM), and the introduction of the rhodamine 6G chromophore in the ring-opened ligand HL-o realizes ligand-centered fluorescence in addition to SMM. Magnetic measurements and ab initio calculations indicate that the magnetic relaxation for complex 1 should be due to the Raman relaxation process. Studies on magneto-structural correlationship of the rhodamine salicylaldehyde hydrazone Dy(III) complexes show that the calculated energy of the first Kramers Doublet (EKD1) is basically related to the Ophenoxy-Dy-Ophenoxy bond angle, i.e., the larger Ophenoxy-Dy-Ophenoxy bond angle corresponds to a larger EKD1.

Resumen
A series of 2,2’-bipyrimidine-bridged dinuclear lanthanide complexes with the general formula [Ln(tmhd)3]2bpm (tmhd = 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-3,5-heptanedionate, bpm = 2,2’-bipyrimidine, Ln = Gd(III), 1; Tb(III), 2; Dy(III), 3; Ho(III), 4 and Er(III), 5) has been synthesized and characterized. Sublimation of [Tb(tmhd)3]2bpm onto a Au(111) surface leads to the formation of a homogeneous film with hexagonal pattern, which was studied by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). The bulk magnetic properties of all complexes have been studied comprehensively. The dynamic magnetic behavior of the Dy(III) and Er(III) compounds clearly exhibits single molecule magnet (SMM) characteristics with an energy barrier of 97 and 25 K, respectively. Moreover, micro-SQUID measurements on single crystals confirm their SMM behavior with the presence of hysteresis loops.

Resumen
We study electron transport through a single-molecule magnet (SMM) and the interplay of its anisotropic spin with quantized vibrational distortions of the molecule. Based on numerical renormalization group calculations we show that, despite the longitudinal anisotropy barrier and small transverse anisotropy, vibrational fluctuations can induce quantum spin-tunneling (QST) and a QST-Kondo effect. The interplay of spin scattering, QST and molecular vibrations can strongly enhance the Kondo effect and induce an anomalous magnetic field dependence of vibrational Kondo side-bands.

Resumen
There has been a renaissance in the interdisciplinary field of Molecular Magnetism since ~2000, due to the discovery of the impressive properties and potential applications of d- and f-metal Single-Molecule Magnets (SMMs) and Single-Ion Magnets (SIMs) or Monometallic Single-Molecule Magnets. One of the consequences of this discovery has been an explosive growth in synthetic molecular inorganic and organometallic chemistry. In SMM and SIM chemistry, inorganic and organic ligands play a decisive role, sometimes equally important to that of the magnetic metal ion(s). In SMM chemistry, bridging ligands that propagate strong ferromagnetic exchange interactions between the metal ions resulting in large spin ground states, well isolated from excited states, are preferable; however, antiferromagnetic coupling can also lead to SMM behavior. In SIM chemistry, ligands that create a strong axial crystal field are highly desirable for metal ions with oblate electron density, e.g., TbIII and DyIII, whereas equatorial crystal fields lead to SMM behavior in complexes based on metal ions with prolate electron density, e.g., ErIII. In this review, we have attempted to highlight the use of few, efficient ligands in the chemistry of transition-metal SMMs and SIMs, through selected examples. The content of the review is purely chemical and it is assumed that the reader has a good knowledge of synthetic, structural and physical inorganic chemistry, as well as of the properties of SIMs and SMMs and the techniques of their study. The ligands that will be discussed are the azide ion, the cyanido group, the tris(trimethylsilyl)methanide, the cyclopentanienido group, soft (based on the Hard-Soft Acid-Base model) ligands, metallacrowns combined with click chemistry, deprotonated aliphatic diols, and the family of 2-pyridyl ketoximes, including some of its elaborate derivatives. The rationale behind the selection of the ligands will be emphasized.

Resumen
In this review, we describe all the structurally characterized complexes containing lanthanoids (Ln, including La and group 3 metals: Y and Lu) and any anilato-type ligand (3,6-disubstituted-2,5-dihydroxy-1,4-benzoquinone dianion = C6O4X22−). We present all the anilato-Ln compounds including those where, besides the anilato-type ligand, there is one or more coligands or solvent molecules coordinated to the lanthanoid ions. We show the different structural types observed in these compounds: from discrete monomers, dimers and tetramers to extended 1D, 2D and 3D lattices with different topologies. We also revise the magnetic properties of these Ln-anilato compounds, including single-molecule magnet (SMM) and single-ion magnet (SIM) behaviours. Finally, we show the luminescent and electrochemical properties of some of them, their gas/solvent adsorption/absorption and exchange capacity and the attempts to prepare them as thin films.

Resumen
The synthesis and magnetic characterisation of four new heterometallic {CrIII2DyIII2} complexes 2–5 are described. The present work follows on from a recently isolated complex [CrIII2DyIII2(OMe)2(O2CPh)4(mdea)2(NO3)2] (1) (mdeaH2 = N-methyldiethanolamine), which displayed impressive single molecule magnet (SMM) properties, notably highly coercive magnetic hysteresis loops below 3.5 K. Compounds 1–5 all display a planar butterfly type metallic core arrangement, with the DyIII ions occupying the central body positions and the CrIII ion the outer wing positions. The core is stabilized by the amine–diolate, and carboxylate bridging ligands. Variation of the amine–diolate ligand resulted in several structural analogues which maintain the same metallic core, but differ from the parent 1 in the outer ligand coordination environment. Magnetic studies reveal complexes 2–5 also display SMM behaviour, unambiguously confirmed via low temperature magnetic hysteresis loops, each displaying wide coercive fields, a rare occurrence for lanthanoid-based SMMs.

The reactions between the bis(1,10-phenantro[5,6-b])tetrathiafulvalene triad (L) and the metallo-precursors Yb(hfac)3(H2O)2 (hfac− = 1,1,1,5,5,5-hexafluoroacetylacetonato anion) and Dy(facam)3 (facam− = 3-trifluoro-acetyl-(+)-camphorato anion) lead to the formation of two dinuclear complexes of formula [Yb2(hfac)6(L)]·2(C7H16) ((1)·2(C7H16)) and [Dy2((+)facam)6(L)]·2(C6H14) ((2)·2(C6H14)). The X-ray structures reveal that the L triad bridges two terminal Yb(hfac)3 or Dy(facam)3 units. (1)·2(C7H16) behaved as a near infrared YbIII centered emitter and a field-induced Single-Molecule Magnet (SMM) while (2)·2(C6H14) displayed SMM behavior in both zero- and in-dc field. Resumen
The two mononuclear complexes of the formula [Dy(tta)3(L)] (1) and [Dy(hfac)3(L)] (2) (where tta- = 2-thenoytrifluoroacetylacetonate and hfac- = 1,1,1,5,5,5-hexafluoroacetylacetonate) were obtained from the coordination reaction of the Dy(tta)3·2H2O or Dy(hfac)3·2H2O units with the 1,10-phenantroline-5,6-dione ligand (L). Their structures have been determined by X-ray diffraction studies on single crystals, and they revealed a supramolecular assembly of tetramers through σ-π interactions. Both complexes displayed a Single-Molecule Magnet (SMM) behavior without an external applied magnetic field. Magnetic relaxation happened through Orbach, Raman and Quantum Tunneling of the Magnetization (QTM). Wavefunction theory calculations were realized to rationalize the magnetic properties.
