INGRISCH, SIGFRID. "Revision of the genera Habetia Kirby, 1906 and Parahabetia gen. nov. from New Guinea (Orthoptera, Tettigoniidae, Conocephalinae, Agraeciini)". Zootaxa 5020, n.º 2 (12 de agosto de 2021): 201–56. http://dx.doi.org/10.11646/zootaxa.5020.2.1.

Texto completo
Resumen
The genus Habetia Kirby, 1906 previously known from only four species or subspecies is revised based on unidentified specimens found in museum collections. H. multispinulosa Griffini, 1908 is given full species status, while H. pictifrons Karny, 1911 is removed from Habetia based on male and female characters and becomes the type species of the new genus Parahabetia gen. nov. Sixteen new species are described in Habetia, and one new species and two new subspecies in Parahabetia. The most significant characters for the differentiation of species of Habetia are male tenth abdominal tergite, cerci, subgenital plate, and male internal genitalia with the titillators that basically form a pair of roughly U-shaped sclerites that vary between species from simple, curved sclerites to modified structures with additional sclerotized branches and the sclerites can be connected with septa to form complex shapes. In contrast, males of Parahabetia have elongate titillators provided at end with a crest. In the larger species of Habetia the stridulatory file on the underside of the male left tegmen has a step in pre-apical area that is missing in the smaller species; one species with a weak step is intermediate between both groups. Unique modifications of single species in Habetia are an apical dorsal extension of the male subgenital plate in H. imitatrix Karny, 1912 and a hardened phallus sheath between phallus and subgenital plate in H. tuta sp. nov. Females of Habetia have straight ovipositors that vary in length and in the shape of the dorsal margin between species. Females can also be differentiated by species specific modifications of the subgenital plate. In Parahabetia the ovipositor is rather short and curved similar to the condition in the genus Philmontis Willemse, 1966 but has the apical area slightly recurved. Keys to the species of both genera are provided. Habetia species have been found throughout New Guinea except so far for Papua Barat; although they were mainly found in the North and the East. Parahabetia species are currently only known from the East of New Guinea. The following species and subspecies are described as new: Habetia bivittata sp. nov., H. curvata sp. nov., H. dentata sp. nov., H. elevata sp. nov., H. kondiu sp. nov., H. lalibu sp. nov., H. nigricauda sp. nov., H. pallida sp. nov., H. pedala sp. nov., H. pilleata sp. nov., H. pinnigera sp. nov., H. quatrispina sp. nov., H. simbai sp. nov., H. sororcula sp. nov., H. tuta sp. nov., H. wau sp. nov., Parahabetia bispinosa sp. nov., P. pictifrons obtusa ssp. nov., P. pictifrons acuta ssp. nov.

Yu, Alan Junwa, Nicholas Eyles, Mike Doughty y Syed Bukhari. "Seismic reflection stratigraphy of Lac Simard, Quebec, Canada: mass flow sedimentation in glacial Lake Barlow-Ojibway". Canadian Journal of Earth Sciences, 8 de junio de 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.1139/cjes-2023-0027.

Texto completo
Resumen
Lac Simard is a glaciated Shield basin in the Western Quebec Seismic Zone, an area home to several densely populated metropolitan areas with recurrent intraplate seismicity. Previous works in the region have demonstrated that sediments preserved in lake basins have the potential to serve as archives of paleoseismicity used for seismic risk assessment. Correspondingly, a high-resolution ‘chirp’ seismic reflection survey was conducted in Lac Simard, with results showing four acoustic facies (Af-1 to Af-4) within two stratigraphic successions (SS-1 and SS-2). The lowermost SS-1 is dominated by high-amplitude, laminated acoustic facies (Af-2), herein interpreted as ‘varves’ deposited by suspension from overflows and interflows during glacial lake ponding following deglaciation. Suspension deposition was episodically interrupted by stacked, chaotically bedded, weakly graded to opaque, channelled facies (Af-3), herein interpreted as either debris flows or high-density turbidity currents. The presence of silt-clast breccias in Af-3 also suggests reworking of varved deposits from basin sidewalls. The overlying SS-2 is dominated by weakly defined, parallel, high-frequency reflectors (Af-4) suggesting a continuing seasonal control on sedimentation and relative sediment starvation after deglaciation. A basin-wide erosional unconformity, separating lateglacial SS-1 and postglacial SS-2, records the abrupt drainage of glacial Lake Barlow-Ojibway at ~8 ka BP. Considering the history of lake floor disturbance in the region, mass flow facies within SS-1 may be seismogenic and thus of regional tectonic significance. However, we cannot rule out the possibility of mass flow triggered by abrupt inflows of meltwater and sediment from a highly dynamic, surge-prone retreating Laurentide Ice Sheet margin.

As explained in introduction (I. Wonders and goods), at the start of this research, one can find a hypothesis: in the Western world there is a certain imagination of the Elsewhere which has been constructed over the centuries both through travel stories and translations of tales. This oriental imagination has moved, over time, from the East to the West and from the West towards the Cosmos where it is still reinvented today through astronomical views, films and TV shows. Our line of work consisted of isolating the tropes and figures that could explain this imaginary persistence. To progress in this field we combined two very different gestures: a use of mashup and “literary compression” on three key-works: The Travels of Marco Polo, One Thousand and One Nights and Star Trek (II-For the World is Hollow); and a literal and historical analysis of a specific tale from One Thousand and One Nights (III- Simbad the Other Sailor)

Cordero, Vincent U. "The Influence of Sea Surface Temperature, Chlorophyll Concentration, and Upwelling Index on Kogia Strandings in Florida". NSUWorks, 2011. http://nsuworks.nova.edu/occ_stuetd/206.

Texto completo
Resumen
It has been demonstrated that certain environmental fluctuations correlate with cetacean strandings in many parts of the world. I examined the correlations between three environmental variables (upwelling coefficient, temperature, and chlorophyll a concentration) and Kogia strandings in Florida from 1998 – 2007. In addition I examined the correlations between El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) events and Kogia strandings in Florida and the southeastern United States (SEUS) from 1977-2007. Florida was divided into four regions and strandings were segregated by region with 76% of the strandings occurring on the east coast of Florida. AVHRR Pathfinder satellite temperature data, and MODIS Aqua and SeaWiFS satellite chlorophyll a data were downloaded from NASA websites; NOAA Fisheries Southwest Fisheries Science Center upwelling data were downloaded from the ERD Live Access Server, and ENSO data were also downloaded from a NOAA website. Upwelling was examined on a per stranding basis. For each stranding, a square region (16 km x 16 km) of ocean adjacent to the stranding was examined for upwelling index values for the two weeks prior to the stranding (in increments of six hours). Each region was divided into 16 sub-regions (4 km x 4 km). For each increment of time the data were averaged over all 16 sub-regions. A significant change in upwelling index was defined as a change of absolute value greater than or equal to 200 m3/s/100 m of coastline. Of the 174 strandings, 91 (52%) were correlated to at least one significant upwelling event within 14 days prior to stranding. I examined upwelling, temperature, and chlorophyll a concentration on a seasonal basis. The Florida coastline was divided into 16 regions. Each region was examined, for all three variables, out to approximately 32 km from shore. For each region the data were averaged for each month over the entire ten year study and compared to the number of strandings in each region each month. Data covering the regions of Florida were merged into four large regions (the east coast, the Keys, the west coast, and the Panhandle). I found an inverse correlation between chlorophyll concentration and strandings in Florida. In addition I found an inverse correlation between upwelling and strandings on the west coast of Florida. I examined the ENSO record from 1977 to 2007. I found a direct correlation between ENSO events and strandings in Florida (R2 = 0.1626) and the SEUS (R2 = 0.2236).

Resumen
Kent Su looks into The Cantos to examine how Pound’s reading of contemporary accounts of Chinese history from a Confucian perspective helped to shape his method for Cantos 52–61, the sequence known as the Chinese Cantos or China Cantos. Following his own dictum in ABC of Reading, “DICHTEN = CONDENSARE” (which Su describes as a “principle of lean philosophical economy”), Pound in the 1930s used the approach of “condensing some historical facts” to capture the pith and gist of ancient Chinese history, an approach Pound also attributes to Mussolini. Readers know that for these Cantos Pound drew from the French text of Joseph-Anne-Marie de Moyriac de Mailla’s 11-volume Histoire générale de la Chine, but Su demonstrates how Pound also made significant use of the two Chinese texts that served as the basis for de Mailla’s Histoire, namely, Sima Guang’s Zizhi Tongjian and Zhu Xi’s Tongjian Gangmu, the latter a condensation of Guang’s 20-volume history. Su further contrasts the influences of Greek philosophy and Confucianism on Pound, as he offers analyses the complex cross-cultural sources of the China Cantos.

Resumen
Abstract Global average surface temperature is projected to increase by 1.4 to 5.80 °C between 1900 and 2100 (International Panel on Climate Change 2001), largely due to human industrial activities, such as the burning of fossil fuels (coal, oil, and gas). Rising sea levels predominantly associated with oceanic thermal expansion are one consequence of changes in surface temperatures (Titus et al. 1991). Although according to some estimates, average sea-level rise is predicted to be 50 cm by the year 2100 (Houghton 1999, International Panel on Climate Change 2001), there have been few attempts to estimate the magnitude of the adverse effects that these coastal ecosystems and, in particular, the species these unique habitats support may experience (Donnelly and Barnes 2001). Salt marshes are coastal ecosystems dominated by halophytic plants and exposed to daily inundation of saline water. Because salt marsh ecosystems are transitional between terrestrial and marine environments, they are particularly susceptible to sea-level rise at their outer boundaries and lowest elevations (Simas et al. 2001). Historically, salt marshes could expand and retreat with changes in sea level, but presently in many areas there is little opportunity for marshes to migrate inland as the advance is blocked by dense human settlements along the coastal fringe (Alexander et al. 1986, Chabreck 1988, Bildstein et al. 1991).

Resumen
Abstract Simultaneous injection of miscible gas and polymer (SIMGAP) has been proposed as a technique for improving sweep efficiency of miscible CO2 in a giant heterogeneous carbonate reservoir (B) with harsh conditions of high temperature and salinity in Abu Dhabi. A pilot is planned to evaluate the concept. Reservoir simulation models were built to design the pilot and to evaluate field-scale deployment of SIMGAP, assuming the pilot is successful. This paper describes the pilot design and the workflow used to assess large-scale deployment. Reservoir-B comprises of two main units, Upper and Lower, which are in hydrodynamic equilibrium but have large (10-100) permeability contrast, due to which, water injected into the Lower unit rapidly crossflows into the Upper unit bypassing significant volumes of oil in the Lower unit. Hence, the Lower unit forms a key target for enhanced oil recovery (EOR). In the SIMGAP process, miscible gas (CO2) is injected into the Lower unit and polymer solution is simultaneously injected into the Upper unit. Provided the polymer solution generates sufficient resistance to flow in the Upper unit, crossflow of CO2 is suppressed, and the Lower unit is efficiently swept by miscible CO2. A SIMGAP pilot has been designed, consisting oftwo central 3000-ft horizontal injectors for polymer injection in Upper, and CO2 injection into Lower unit respectively and two 3000-ft horizontal producers in the Lower unit 250m from the central injectors on either side. Reservoir sweep will be determined by repeat logging of vertical observation wells and the polymer solution in the Upper unit will be sampled to confirm in situ viscosity. A reservoir model was built and calibrated to field behavior to design the Pilot. The relevant design parameters include offtake rate, polymer and CO2 injection rates, polymer pre-flush and polymer solution concentration and viscosity. A key prerequisite for proper modelling of SIMGAP is to have a static model that captures the geological heterogeneity (e.g., vertical permeability contrast, all prevailing rock types) and a dynamic model that incorporates the SCAL derived capillary pressure (both drainage and imbibition) and relative permeability curves. The model forecasts show that significant sweep of the lower zone is achieved with SIMGAP compared to both water or gas injection and that the process is stable and robust to lateral and vertical reservoir heterogeneities. The SIMGAP process has never been piloted and it involves a hybrid of two EOR techniques CO2 injection and polymer flooding in harsh conditions of both high temperature and salinity. In addition, field deployment of SIMGAP was directly simulated in the sector models. The resulting field profiles were used to evaluate SIMGAP deployment in Reservoir-B.

Resumen
Abstract. The SIMBIO-SYS (Spectrometer and Imaging for MPO BepiColombo Integrated Observatory SYStem) is a complex instrument suite part of the scientific payload of the Mercury Planetary Orbiter for the BepiColombo mission, the last of the cornerstone missions of the European Space Agency (ESA) Horizon + science program. It will explore Mercury, the closest planet to the Sun. The SIMBIO-SYS instrument will provide all the science imaging capability of the BepiColombo MPO spacecraft. It consists of three channels: the STereo imaging Channel (STC), with broad spectral band in the 410-930 nm range and medium spatial resolution (up to 60 m/px), that will provide Digital Terrain Model of the entire surface of the planet with an accuracy better than 80 m; the High Resolution Imaging Channel HRIC), with broad spectral bands in the 530-900 nm range and high spatial resolution (up to 6 m/px), that will provide high resolution images of about 10% of the surface, and the Visible and near-Infrared Hyperspectral Imaging channel (VIHI), with high spectral resolution (up to 6 nm) in the 400-2000 nm range and spatial resolution up to 120 m/px, it will provide the global coverage at 480 m/px with the spectral information, assuming the first orbit around Mercury with periherm at 480 km from the surface. It has been funded by the two space agencies, ASI (Italian Space Agency) and CNES (French Space Agency) and it is the result of the collaboration between more than 100 scientists and engineers of 12 different countries all over the world, with the Italian prime contractor Leonardo spa. It is the first time that a planetary mission has three remote sensing instruments integrated in a system, sharing the Main Electronics, and under the responsibility of one team.

Resumen
This paper describes the need for improved methods for validating numerical models used in shiphandling simulators. Such models vary in complexity, from rather simplistic models used for initial shiphandling training at maritime training centers to high-quality models used in the study of advanced marine operations. High-quality simulation models are also used in investigations of maritime accidents such as collisions and groundings. The SIMMAN 2008 conference presented the results of benchmarking studies of simulation tools currently used by research institutes, universities and training centers around the world. Many of these tools employ models based on numerical calculations using methods based on potential or viscous fluid flow, experiments using scale ship models (free running or captive) or semi empirical expressions based on regression analysis of previous model tests. The organizers of SIMMAN 2008 made the hull characteristics of certain ship types available for a comparative study of simulation maneuvering models. The outcome of the benchmark study (using IMO standard maneuvers as case study maneuvers) showed that simulated results varied significantly. In the opinion of the authors, there is an urgent need for new validation studies. The first part of this paper discusses the concepts of simulation model fidelity, verification and validation and the present guidelines issued by ITTC for validation of maneuvering simulation models. The second part looks at the outcomes of the SIMMAN 2008 conference and describes MARINTEK’s contribution to the benchmark study. The use of real-world measurements in model validation is briefly discussed. The need for registration of actual test conditions, as well as the types of tests that should be included in a test scheme, are presented. Finally, the authors discuss validation requirements with respect to the actual application of the selected simulation model as an engineering tool that can be transferred to training simulators used by maritime training centers. It is assumed that simplified simulation models may reduce the quality of simulator based training for ship officers. It is believed that increased quality of simulator model will improve the transfer of training from simulators to real life operations and remove some of the uncertainties related to investigation of maritime accidents.

Resumen
The fundamental advantage which optics has is its parallel communications capability. Lenses, mirrors, and prisms can easily communicate millions of wide bandwidth channels in parallel. The question arises as to how to take advantage of this capability. This difficulty is more a computer science problem than an optics problem. Large arrays of processors have yet to be built and successfully applied. The two basic approaches being pursued involve either a single instruction multiple data (SIMD) or a multiple instruction multiple data (MIMD) architecture. The single instruction multiple data architecture is the most prevalent version since it is simpler conceptually, however it is limited in terms of application and difficult to use. The more interesting architecture is the multiple instruction and multiple data configuration. The main difficulty in applying this architecture is finding a means of coordinating the various asynchronous processes. This need for coordination brings alone with it a large communications burden. The classification of parallel processors into SIMD and MIMD processors is formal and only hints at how the parallel communications capability of optics might be used.

Resumen
This paper presents the trade-offs concerning lnput-Output communications at the interface of a SIMD systolic machine, and inside the machine. These problems have been raised by the accelerating board we are currently designing. We discuss about the issues involved by VLSI design: cascadability, scalability, fault tolerance, and feasibility. We present the main features of our architecture, and the performances measured with an actual application which proves that despire of the host computer slowness, the I/O bottleneck is not a penalty for the calculation acceleration.

Resumen
Cryptography based on elliptic curves is endowed with efficient methods for public-key cryptography. Recent research has shown the superiority of the Montgomery and Edwards curves over the Weierstrass curves as they require fewer arithmetic operations. Using these modern curves has, however, introduced several challenges to the cryptographic algorithm’s design, opening up new opportunities for optimization. Our main objective is to propose algorithmic optimizations and implementation techniques for cryptographic algorithms based on elliptic curves. In order to speed up the execution of these algorithms, our approach relies on the use of extensions to the instruction set architecture. In addition to those specific for cryptography, we use extensions that follow the Single Instruction, Multiple Data (SIMD) parallel computing paradigm. In this model, the processor executes the same operation over a set of data in parallel. We investigated how to apply SIMD to the implementation of elliptic curve algorithms. As part of our contributions, we design parallel algorithms for prime field and elliptic curve arithmetic. We also design a new three-point ladder algorithm for the scalar multiplication P + kQ, and a faster formula for calculating 3P on Montgomery curves. These algorithms have found applicability in isogeny-based cryptography. Using SIMD extensions such as SSE, AVX, and AVX2, we develop optimized implementations of the following cryptographic algorithms: X25519, X448, SIDH, ECDH, ECDSA, EdDSA, and qDSA. Performance benchmarks show that these implementations are faster than existing implementations in the state of the art. Our study confirms that using extensions to the instruction set architecture is an effective tool for optimizing implementations of cryptographic algorithms based on elliptic curves. May this be an incentive not only for those seeking to speed up programs in general but also for computer manufacturers to include more advanced extensions that support the increasing demand for cryptography.

Resumen
This paper presents a dynamic analysis model where installation vessel in coupled with the riser system using the SIMA software. The model is used to assess risk and weather limitations for riser replacements performed with SIMOPRO (Simultaneous Marine Operation and Production). The SIMA model has been used in several complex riser replacement operations in the North Sea during 2017, and proven to be a vital support tool for decision making offshore. The analysis supported critical operational decisions that resulted in reduced weather downtime and enabled the marine operations to be completed in a safe and efficient manner, while the platforms were kept in production. In the planning phase the analysis model was used to test specific DP settings to minimize vessel footprint, optimize procedure steps and provide accurate limits to an Activity Specific Operating Guideline (ASOG). The model was further used to verify vessel and riser response subjected to various “emergency situations”, such as wire break and partial or full vessel black-out. The results were used to establish detailed contingency procedures. During the offshore operations, analyses were performed at regular intervals at the vessel with measured and forecasted weather data, to monitor vessel response and predict vessel drift-off trajectories in case of a vessel black-out scenario. The information provided by the DP recorder was fed back into the fully coupled analysis model where the Kongsberg Maritime DP settings were updated to reflect actual vessel system behaviour. The analysis model also provided vessel drift-off predictions in good agreement with real drift-off test results. With the optimized fully coupled analysis model it was then possible to perform simulations of the planned installation steps based on forecasted weather data.
