Resumen
This study aimed to investigate the languages used in shop signs in three different areas in Semenyih, Selangor, Malaysia. Using a mixed-method approach, this paper identified the preferred language for shop signs in the town of Semenyih, Pelangi Semenyih, and Setia Ecohill, as well as examined the relationship between the language choice in signages and linguistic landscape in Malaysia. A total of 180 signboards was photographed to ensure the impartiality of data collection, and they were coded based on four aspects: full names of the shops in various languages, the business scope of the shops, the number of languages used in shop signs, size of the scripts, and layout of languages highlighted, adopted from the study of Shang and Guo (2017). Questionnaires and interviews with the shop owners were also employed to elicit information about their preferences regarding the language choice for their shop signages, which shed light on the impact of the development in Semenyih towards the choice of shop signages. The findings revealed that, despite the regulations imposed by the local city council (Majlis Perbandaran Kajang (MPKJ) or Kajang Municipal Town Council) on the permissible shop signages, the shop owners still used languages other than the Malay language in their signboards, such as English, Mandarin, and Tamil, with English being the most dominant one. This indicates that, as the towns develop, the linguistic landscape here changes with importance being given to signboards in English compared to Malay.

Resumen
The article deals with the study of the semiotic opportunities of the urban space as a learning tool. The authors analyze the literature on urban research and point to the significant interest of the education system in various manifestations of urban life: architectural, design, environmental, adaptational, etc. The notion of “city” in numerous studies usually means an environment full of different natural objects and structures. The latter should include houses, sculptural and architectural monuments, specially organized urban space, for example, the city center and its peripheral area marked with certain signs. Researchers insist that a city is a complex semiotic space in which a citizen lives and navigates. Various types of signs are actively involved in the organization of urban life (Ch. Peirce). Thus, iconic signs make it easy to navigate the city without resorting to decoding symbolic signs, i.e. without reading the signs and names of, for example, stores: a boot hanging next to the signboard allows one to determine that the citizen is in front of a shoe store. A child navigates such signs easily, however, participating in orienting activities on par with adults. The purpose of this article is to consider the city learning opportunities for helping young children to form the semiotic activity which is included in various types of educational activities. The novelty of the research presented in the article is confirmed by the lack of scientific publications that directly consider the educational opportunities of urban space semiotics. The main research method is the code reconstruction method. The figure of a child plays an important role in the study. The child acts as the central subject of perception of the city-textbook. Following the idea of the most prominent researchers of semiotics, the authors regard the city as a text for a child to read. The analytical part of the article is based on recording children’s impressions of the urban text.

Resumen
The purpose of this study is to propose a realistic improvement plan specialized in the business area based on the problems derived from the survey results to improve the brand image of cafes without signs. As there is a lack of prior research related to the absence of signboards, this study was conducted on all cafe brands without signboards without clearly selecting a specific cafe brand. As a result of the survey, most of the consumers who visit cafes without signboards receive brand-related information such as cafe photos, reviews, and locations through social media, and social media compensates for the inconvenience that may arise due to the absence of signboards. In particular, social media showed the possibility of being used as an effective tool to effectively deliver brand images to various customers, including the younger generation. However, the result of the satisfaction survey of cafes without signboards showed a rather low score of 3.06 (5-point Likert scale, 1-very low, 5-very high), and it was found that improvement was needed in various aspects. Accordingly, an additional survey was conducted to identify shortcomings and suggest five improvement plans to improve the brand image.

Resumen
The study appeals to two works on Moscow sign boards: F. Distribuendi’s brochure and S. Krzhizhanovsky’s essay were aimed at examining the authors’ final conclusions and visions of both the imperial and soviet in conceptual form, rather than an ideological marker of chronological time of analysis of street sign boards in Moscow. The maximum coverage of the components of each of the stories about the decoration of sign boards guaranteed the presentation of these authorized stories as a completed narrative complex, which excludes the possibility of involving these works in premature, external to the consistent course of each of these stories, comparison. An analysis of Distribuendi’s narrative complex of Moscow signs showed that the continuing deterioration in the artistic level of ordinary signboards could not preserve the legendary history of their origins and preserve the possibility of reviews of these signboards as a new historical monument.A possible reform of the design of signboards in the form of unified completed forms is hindered not by the lack of calculations but only by the lack of omnipotent desire. F. Distribuendi’s vision of the desire for the final basis of the reform in the design of signboards connects this reform to all previous reforms in the empire, which were implemented only by the power and makes the whole narrative complex of Distribuendi’s work an organic imperial vision. Analysis of the narrative complex of S. Krzhizhanovsky’s essay on Moscow signs made it possible to identify a certain core in it, which streamlines the analysis of the presence of signboards in the city. This core was the vision of capturing the signboards of visual attention and memory of the average person as result of the organization of thinking in a pattern. The last option of thinking can level the sense of difference between people and everyday phenomena. Therefore, the liberation of sight and attention of the sign, an instruction of Soviet institutions from the performances of symbolic signs as the most powerful pattern of hunting for the buyer, was proposed to study further, but under the Soviet vision: transmission of knowledge about the final victory over thinking in patterns on sign boards to new generations.

Resumen
Real Work Lectures (KKN) are a concrete manifestation of students' duties to fulfill life skills with the guidance of lecturers. One of the aims of the KKN program carried out in Kerumut Village is to create street name boards which are an important means of providing information about the location and names of streets in an area. There are no street signs yet, which makes it difficult for outsiders to find locations in the area. KKN STKIP and STEI Hamzar East Lombok students have planned a solution to overcome this problem by making directional signs, especially in Kerumut Village. The method used is direct partner solution, namely making road signs which include 8 signboards, with the size of each board being 50 cm x 30 cm. After completing the plaque making, it was continued with painting which was then continued with the installation of the board which was carried out by students and assisted by the local community. Installation of signboards includes signs for village officials' houses, directional signs to important places as well as signs for RT and RW area boundaries in Kerumut Village. Activities carried out in 4 hamlets, namely Toron hamlet, Gubuk Daya hamlet, Benteng hamlet and Dasan Lendang hamlet, were carried out well with the support and assistance of the village residents. There were no significant obstacles in the process of preparation, implementation and evaluation of activities, it's just that the process took a long time. Making and installing road signs or plaques is a form of participation, coordination and active involvement of students, lecturers and local village residents.

Resumen
The social interest in outdoor advertising signs, which have been recognized as an important element affecting impressions of a town, has been gradually increasing. However, when these signs are fully scattered around commercial areas, an oppressive feeling may be experienced by people, which cannot be neglected. Thus, this paper attempts to identify the characteristics of such visual oppression in urban landscapes through factor analysis, aiming to control them in such a way that does not oppress people. In addition, comparisons between Japanese and foreign nationals (i.e., foreign students from the Republic of Korea and the People’s Republic of China) were carried out, in order to check for any differences in perception of oppressive feelings depending on nationality. At the same time, to check for the possibility of different levels of perception depending on nationality, 20 Japanese and 20 foreign nationals (including Koreans and Chinese) were selected as test subjects. We expect this study to provide useful research material when reviewing the possibility of creating desirable urban landscapes or establishing guidelines for outdoor advertisements. For the research, landscape pictures focusing on outdoor advertising signs (15 wall, 6 roof-top, and 6 projection advertising signs) were taken as a sample for analysis. They were then presented in a 3D cyberdome for factor analysis, focusing on an impression evaluation test in relation to oppressive feelings. In addition, among the data obtained from the sample analysis, “Proportion,” which was considered to be the most influential factor on the oppressive feeling, was studied. The correlation coefficient between these two populations was 0.918, revealing a high level of correlation; thus, all subjects were treated as a single population. The factor analysis revealed 50.87% for the first factor (Evaluation), 25.39% for the second factor (capacity), and 9.47% for the third factor (Emotion), suggesting a relationship wherein the first factor decreased when the oppressive feeling increased; while the oppressive feeling increased along with the second factor.

Similar to this, for the purpose of support and safeguard drivers, "driver alert" systems in automobiles need to comprehend the surrounding road. With our technology, drivers wouldn't have to take their eyes off the road to see and understand traffic signs. Convolution neural networks allow for accurate classification of the signboards. More layers can be added to increase the precision. Here, training and testing are done using the GTSRB dataset; by optimizing the settings, traffic signs are reliably classified into 43 types, and detection speed also rises. Resumen
The schoolhouse is a place in which messages for student consumption are typically found with classroom lectures, text, and activities. As with any social setting, however, the communication is not confined to one space but extends, in this case, to hallways, common spaces, and exterior of the building. One of the most common practices for the delivery of messages to students within the schoolhouse is through visual signage. Visual signage can traverse disciplines encompassing concepts from the fields of communication, semiotics, language, literacy, and even interior design. In an effort to understand the impact these signs have on student populations this dissertation asks the question: How are signs within public high schools produced, consumed, and influential to persons in contact with intended messages that are presented in public school spaces? The study utilizes ethnography to describe the production, consumption, and influence of fixed signs in the interior hallways and common spaces at three public high schools in Texas. At each campus, student volunteers, one from each grade level, provided their individual course schedule to follow their daily route from class to class at their particular high school. Post these observations these students engaged in focus groups to discuss the various signs displayed on their campus. In addition, faculty/staff members from each high school volunteered to participate in a separate faculty/staff focus group to discuss the use of signage in schools and the observations made by both the students and myself during the observations. The data suggest that district directives and social happenings guide the production of messages for each campus. The consumption and influence of these messages though is far more complex as a variety of factors contributed to the student and faculty/staff consumption, or lack thereof, and influence to action. As ethnography, this dissertation sheds light onto these complexities revealing that a host of external and internal issues dictate the messages displayed through school signage within the individual schoolhouse.

Chmielewska, Ella. "Implaced communication : wayfinding and informational environments". Thesis, McGill University, 2001. http://digitool.Library.McGill.CA:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=36891.

Texto completo
Resumen
This thesis investigates the relationship between communication and place, and the informational environment it forms. The thesis takes as its object of analysis signage, and examines signage as an implaced medium of communication.
In this work communication, including its practices and technologies, is treated as a dynamic ritual formed by the marking, naming, connecting, and interpreting the environment in the process of wayfinding. Such an approach underscores the inherent duality of communication: its manifestations framed by transmission and ritual; its boundedness by both space and time; and its expression in both mobile and fixed (implaced) media. The thesis thus shifts the disciplinary discourse from the usual text- and language-based focus to a more comprehensive focus that encompasses architectural and infrastructural environments and the grounding action of physical presences. Through its focus on the navigational aspects of communication, and framing by such concepts as wayfinding and signposting, the thesis shows how we can reconfigure the notion of the visual to include the embodied, experiential, and implaced. This in turn can help us gain a new perspective on the changing nature of text, image, representation, information and reality.
The thesis argues that as the themes of orientation, navigation, and interface grow alongside the new communication technologies, they make it important to attend to the original mediating role of the built environment and the navigational dimensions of place. It is here, within our foundational spatial orientation and wayfinding, that we turn for the metaphors, conceptual structures, and grounding as we chart our ways through the emerging informational environments.
In examining signage as a system of interfaces used in negotiating informational environments, as way-markers in a process of wayfinding, the thesis demonstrates the ways in which the concepts of wayfinding and navigation have become consequential to communication scholarship. It proposes that fruitful cues for the theorising and understanding of emerging informational realms can be drawn from the communicative dimensions of the most familiar immersive environments and their related practices: the physical spaces and built environments that we inhabit and negotiate daily.

Resumen
The purpose of this thesis is to define the historical commercial center. To write this history, it was necessary to identify the developmental factors affecting the form and/or placement of the building sign. Historic photographs of the Indianapolis commercial center and other primary sources were used to document the popular sign forms of that era.Sign history is not a subject that is well represented in preservation or urban planning literature. Thus, the preservation and/or adaptive use of historic commercial districts often lacks strong references to the district's building sign heritage. This history is a guide for those professionals whose job it is to develop design guidelines and sign ordinances for early 20th-century historic commercial districts.

Resumen
AbstractThis chapter reveals that the cultural association of cosmetic prostheses with ageing stems, at least in part, from satirical sources that paradoxically both bulwark and mock the hegemony of physical wholeness and youth. Emphasizing the extent to which preferences for youth were intertwined with demands for physical completeness, this chapter exposes how the dominance of these two physical states was undermined by stories that either ridicule the process of concealment for elderly users or present unlikely prostheticized heroes in unconventional ways. The chapter draws from genres such as the Gothic, sensation fiction, and imperial adventure fiction. It argues that, despite their differences, the depictions of ageing prosthesis users selected challenge the dominance of physical wholeness/youth by laughing at the absurd results that these demands effected.

Resumen
The study analyzes the translingual features of the signs of the linguistic landscape of the metropolis on the example of advertising signs in the central streets of Moscow. Research methods include the method of describing the linguistic landscape and semiotic analysis. The analytical categories of the classification of signs are the geographical distribution, the languages contained, the order of the signs, the regularities of the combination of hybrid elements of the sign. The aim of the article was not quantitative, but qualitative analysis, which meant identifying the main trends. Based on the results of the analysis, it can be concluded that, firstly, the hybridized elements are included in another sign based on the imitation of part of its form — sound or graphic; secondly, translingual signs of signboards transform the nominations they represent, increasing their predicativeness; thirdly, as a result of the hybridization of various semiotic resources, the sign is estranged, creating difficulties for recognizing the form and thereby activating attention and perception.

Resumen
To ensure a smooth and secure flow of traffic, road signs are essential. A major cause of road accidents is negligence in viewing the Traffic signboards and interpreting them incorrectly. The proposed system helps in recognizing the Traffic sign and sending a voice alert through the speaker to the driver so that he/ she may take necessary decisions. The proposed system is trained using Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) which helps in traffic sign image recognition and classification. A set of classes are defined and trained on a particular dataset to make it more accurate. The German Traffic Sign Benchmarks Dataset was used, which contains approximately 43 categories and 51,900 images of traffic signs. The accuracy of the execution is about 98.52 percent. Following the detection of the sign by the system, a voice alert is sent through the speaker which notifies the driver. The proposed system also contains a section where the vehicle driver is alerted about the traffic signs in the near proximity which helps them to be aware of what rules to follow on the route. The aim of this system is to ensure the safety of the vehicle’s driver, passengers, and pedestrians.

Resumen
Background: Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) is a progressive, rare, fatal and rapid human neurodegenerative disease that occurs in the etiologies: sporadic (CJD), familial, iatrogenic (CJD) and CJD variant (CJV) in which cell prion protein (PrP) can be transmitted through animals. Objectives: Literature review about Creutzfeldt-Jakob diseaseDesign and setting: Literature review development in the Centro Universitário de Volta Redonda, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Methods: The Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, infectious diseases and neuroinfection indexes were used in the PUBMED and Scielo databases. Results:CJD has different etiologies with different clinical and pathological phenotypes. CJDV shows psychiatric behaviors and symptoms followed by abnormalities, ataxia and dementia. The sporadic form is the most common, with a progressive clinical course with generalized brain deposition of abnormal prion protein aggregates (PrPTSE) that leads to spongiform change, gliosis and neuronal loss. CJD progresses to dementia and two or more symptoms: cerebellar or visual impairments; pyramidal or extrapyramidal signs; myoclonus; and akinetic mutism. Complex periods of acute wave in the electroencephalogram (EEG) are strongly suggestive of prionic diseases. Rapidly evolving field neuroimmune disorders have shown an increasing in autoantibody testing; attempt to diagnose a range of immune-mediated conditions. Evidence indicates that diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DWI) is more sensitive for detecting signal abnormalities. Conclusion: The disease progresses to dementia, accompanied by myoclonus, pyramidal signs and characteristic EEG. It is a complex pathology, which has only symptomatic treatment and requires strict control of reservoirs and risk of contamination.

Clinical indicators of systemic tissue hypoperfusion (‘shock’): A protocol for a systematic review and qualitative analysis of the literature. INPLASY - International Platform of Registered Systematic Review and Meta-analysis Protocols, diciembre de 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.37766/inplasy2022.12.0047.

Texto completo
Resumen
Review question / Objective: The objective of this review is to identify the current scientific evidence on the value of clinical signs to indicate systemic tissue hypoperfusion or shock. Condition being studied: In the literature and clinical studies, shock has traditionally been defined by a drop in arterial blood pressure under a critical threshold, e.g., a systolic blood pressure of 90 mmHg, a mean arterial blood pressure <65 mmHg or a relative drop in systolic blood pressure of ≥40 mmHg. From a pathophysiologic point of view, shock relates to an imbalance between tissue oxygen delivery as well as cellular oxygen consumption and utilization. In most cases, shock results from systemic tissue hypoperfusion with consequent decreased tissue oxygen delivery (commonly referred to as circulatory shock). Impaired cellular oxygen consumption and utilization appear to play contributory roles in specific disease states (e.g., sepsis) or conditions (e.g., intoxications).

Texto completo
Resumen
We consider structural vector autoregressions subject to narrative restrictions, which are inequalities involving structural shocks in specific time periods (e.g. shock signs in given quarters). Narrative restrictions are used widely in the empirical literature. However, under these restrictions, there are no formal results on identification or the properties of frequentist approaches to inference, and existing Bayesian methods can be sensitive to prior choice. We provide formal results on identification, propose a computationally tractable robust Bayesian method that eliminates prior sensitivity, and show that it is asymptotically valid from a frequentist perspective. Using our method, we find that inferences about the output effects of US monetary policy obtained under restrictions related to the Volker episode are sensitive to prior choice. Under a richer set of restrictions, there is robust evidence that output falls following a positive monetary policy shock.

Texto completo
Resumen
This project is a continuation of research to enhance dry gas seal (DGS) reliability. Previous work reviewed failures from literature and experience of manufacturers and end-users and identified that liquid contamination was the most common cause, but it was concluded there was insufficient quantitative data to base recommendations on for further DGS reliability enhancements. Therefore, experimental and analytical investigations were pursued to fill the void. The ultimate objective was to be able to predict DGS failures due to liquid contamination, which could lead to greater DGS reliability through improvements in design, instrumentation, and monitoring. The current project phase had objectives with simulations and testing. Simulations were extended to the all other pressure conditions for further validation of the modeling assumptions. The improved simulation methodology was subsequently used to predict a condition that suggests a potential failure mode using a one-way fluid-structure interaction simulation. This resulted in a prediction that a liquid mass fraction of 4% would cause a 50% relative reduction of the seal film clearance, which was the chosen test condition to perform the validation. Testing up to three times this target value was agreed upon as the maximum concentration to perform the testing at a maximum duration of 8 minutes. This would be invoked to test more aggressively in case signs of failure were not observed. PRCI and GMRC co-funded this project.

Resumen
Terrorist attacks using explosives and CBRN (Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear) materials have been present throughout history. While the frequency of CBRN terrorist attacks is relatively low compared to those with explosives and other types of weapons, it is crucial to treat the efforts of both terrorist organizations and individuals with appropriate gravity in order to avert catastrophic consequences. Identifying warning signs that indicate criminal behaviour is crucial for preventing planned crimes or terrorist attacks, and there is a need for more precise coverage of potential risk indicators related to CBRN and explosive crimes. This research aimed at examining and scrutinizing possible warning signs associated with planning and conducting terrorist attacks using CBRN and explosive materials. The research was implemented in three phases. First, comprise the systematic literature review. In the second phase, the case studies and CCTV records from past cases from Europe, USA, Australia and Asia were analysed and the aim was to create a list of risk indicators and categories for future reference by developing a methodological tool. The last phase represented a survey in which the practitioners from European Law enforcement and Intelligence Agencies critically assessed the list of risk indicators and their categories created based on the previous two steps of the research. The last goal was to gain the agreement and endorsement of law enforcement officials from different European nations regarding the validity and importance of recognized risk indicators and their categories, as well as their ranking for use in operational tasks, investigations, and training. The majority of the respondents found the identified categories and risk indicators as reliable and relevant for their operational activities and investigations. For the second research question, the survey results prioritized categories of risk indicators that are most suitable for the detection tactics of investigators and intelligence officers. The third research question examined the ease of observing identified risk indicators, with the category of technological detection/air sampling alarm risk indicators ranking as the easiest to detect. Finally, the survey found that the identified risk indicators are useful for training activities of security entities. Several final comments and recommendations from participants were also discussed, emphasizing the importance of considering multiple factors when identifying risk indicators and the value of the comprehensive list of identified risk indicators. The publication also examines some terrorist theories, the advantages, limitations, and the ongoing debate surrounding the use of profiling in protective security.

Texto completo
Resumen
Review question / Objective: The aim of this study is to evaluate the methodological quality of the literature and the risk of bias used in systematic reviews of therapies for bruxism in dentistry, applying the Amstar II qualitative guide and to answer the following question: What do we know so far about the different treatments applied for bruxism and their effectiveness, as well as what is the overall confidence of the systematic reviews evaluating this topic? Condition being studied: There is an ongoing debate about the causal factors associated with patients diagnosed with bruxism and thus various treatment approaches, so according to the available scientific evidence there is no consensus on which is the most effective. (4) (8) (10). According to several studies, occlusal splints do not currently have a scientifically proven efficacy for the management of bruxism, because they lack randomized controlled clinical studies, and should therefore be considered as a limited treatment modality, since the effect of the splints does not seem to address the cause of bruxism and serves mainly for the management of the signs and symptoms of this disorder (11) (12). Alternative therapies such as relaxation and biofeedback have been proposed for bruxism, especially in cases of daytime bruxism, which are more related to stress and anxiety. (13). There are also studies that support the use of the NTI-tssa device can be used successfully, however, it may present side effects if necessary checks and readjustments are not performed (14). Some medications can be used to decrease bruxing episodes, but some pharmacological treatments may not be safe if used for prolonged periods of time, considering the inherent side effects or risks of dependence (15).

Texto completo
Resumen
Energy from pavements can be harvested in multiple ways to produce clean energy. One of the techniques is electromagnetic energy harvesting, in which mechanical energy from vehicles is captured in the form of input displacement to produce electricity. In this study, a rack-and-pinion electromagnetic energy harvester proposed in the literature as a speed bump is optimized for highway-speed vehicles. A displacement transfer plate is also proposed, with a minimum depth of embedment in the pavement to carry input displacements from passing vehicles and excite the energy harvester. The energy harvester was designed, and kinematic modeling was carried out to establish power–output relations as a function of rack velocity. Sensitivity analysis of various parameters indicated that, for high-speed applications where rack velocities are relatively high, small input excitations could be harnessed to achieve the rated revolutions per minute (RPM) of the generator. A set of laboratory tests was conducted to validate the kinematic model, and a good correlation was observed between measured and predicted voltages. Dynamic modeling of the plate was done for both recovery and compression to obtain the plate and rack velocities. Using Monte Carlo simulation, the plate was designed for a class-9 truck with wide-base tires moving at 128 km/h. Design and layout of the energy harvester with a displacement transfer plate was proposed for field validation. The energy harvester with the displacement plate could be integrated with transverse rumble strips in construction zones and near diversions. Hence, it could be used as a standalone system to power roadside applications such as safety signs, road lights, speed cameras, and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) systems.

Sakulneya, Apidej y Jeffery Roesler. Enhancing Construction Work-Zone Safety by Passive Pavement-to-Vehicle Communication. Illinois Center for Transportation, agosto de 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.36501/0197-9191/23-016.

Texto completo
Resumen
Construction work zones for roads pose significant safety challenges for drivers and workers, which can lead to accidents, injuries, fatalities, and property damage. Enhancing construction work-zone safety requires an understanding of the factors influencing accidents and fatalities and an evaluation of existing safety and traffic-management measures. The objective of this study was to improve work-zone safety for roadways, by connecting passive material sensing in the road with vehicle communication systems. A review of the main roadway work-zone safety literature found driver behavior, traffic congestion, and signage effectiveness to be the most significant factors. Vehicle speed, type of vehicles, type of collisions, and environmental conditions were found to have the most impact on the fatality rate in work zones. Past attempts to improve work-zone safety include adding rumble strips, more warning signs, and implementing smart-work-zone (SWZ) technologies. SWZ communication in-vehicle was found to reduce traffic speeds and promote faster and more consistent merging in the work-zone transition area. Pavement-assisted passive sensing, coupled with vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communication, may offer enhanced in-vehicle speed and lane-merge warnings, which could improve driver awareness, reduce vehicle speeds, and improve work-zone safety. A laboratory-based experiment was developed to validate the theoretical configurations of smart work zones (SWZ) using passive pavement sensing, with the objective being to determine suitable spacings and inclination angles for the electromagnetic (EM) strips as speed and lane-merge warning systems, respectively. The experimental results revealed that these EM strips can estimate vehicle speed with sufficient accuracy, and the spacing of the EM-sensing strips influences the signal intensity. Additionally, the spacing and inclination angle of the EM strips influence the captured signals. This lab pilot study clearly demonstrated the potential of EM-based strips in enhancing speed and lane-merge warning systems using V2I technology for improved safety in roadway work zones.

Apiyo, Eric, Zita Ekeocha, Stephen Robert Byrn y Kari L. Clase. Improving Pharmacovigilliance Quality Management System in the Pharmacy and Poisions Board of Kenya. Purdue University, diciembre de 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.5703/1288284317444.

Texto completo
Resumen
The purpose of this study was to explore ways of improving the pharmacovigilance quality system employed by the Pharmacy and Poisons Board of Kenya. The Pharmacy and Poisons Board of Kenya employs a hybrid system of pharmacovigilance that utilizes an online system of reporting pharmacovigilance incidences and a physical system, where a yellow book is physically filled by the healthcare worker and sent to the Pharmacy and Poisons Board for onward processing. This system, even though it has been relatively effective compared to other systems employed in Africa, has one major flaw. It is a slow and delayed system that captures the data much later after the fact and the agency will always be behind the curve in controlling the adverse incidents and events. This means that the incidences might continue to arise or go out of control. This project attempts to develop a system that would be more proactive in the collection of pharmacovigilance data and more predictive of pharmacovigilance incidences. The pharmacovigilance system should have the capacity to detect and analyze subtle changes in reporting frequencies and in patterns of clinical symptoms and signs that are reported as suspected adverse drug reactions. The method involved carrying out a thorough literature review of the latest trends in pharmacovigilance employed by different regulatory agencies across the world, especially the more stringent regulatory authorities. A review of the system employed by the Pharmacy and Poisons Board of Kenya was also done. Pharmacovigilance data, both primary and secondary, were collected and reviewed. Media reports on adverse drug reactions and poor-quality medicines over the period were also collected and reviewed. An appropriate predictive pharmacovigilance tool was also researched and identified. It was found that the Pharmacy and Poisons Board had a robust system of collecting historical pharmacovigilance data both from the healthcare workers and the general public. However, a more responsive data collection and evaluation system is proposed that will help the agency achieve its pharmacovigilance objectives. On analysis of the data it was found that just above half of all the product complaints, about 55%, involved poor quality medicines; 15% poor performance, 13% presentation, 8% adverse drug reactions, 7% market authorization, 2% expired drugs and 1% adulteration complaints. A regulatory pharmacovigilance prioritization tool was identified, employing a risk impact analysis was proposed for regulatory action.
