Resumen
The aim of the present work is to define the maximum stress generated by the coupling of axially symmetric and continuous shafts press-fitted into axially symmetric hubs. The theoretical stresses given by the well-known formulae of the thick-walled cylinders theory are constant on the whole coupling surface, but if the shaft extends beyond the hub there is a stress concentration factor on the boundary zone. This occurrence is confirmed by finite element analyses performed by the authors on several different shaft—hub couplings. The analysed couplings have the shaft extended beyond the hub, the shafts press-fitted into the hubs, and both shafts and hubs loaded by an external pressure and an internal pressure. The stress concentration factors have been calculated in this work and their expressions have been derived as a function of some tensile and geometrical parameters. By combining the thick-walled cylinders theory with the proposed formulae, it is possible to evaluate the maximum stress located at the end of the hub without performing any numerical investigations.

Resumen
In the shrink or press-fitted shafts such as railway axles, the rotor of a steam turbine or coupling, a high-stress concentration takes place in the close of contact edge due to relative slip between shaft and boss in a press-fitted shaft and this is a major cause of fatigue failure of the shaft. The object of this paper is to build a finite element analysis model for analysing press-fitted and bending load condition in a pressfitted assembly and is to propose a hub shape optimization method to minimize a contact pressure in the close of shaft contact edge. Numerical asymmetric-axisymmetric finite element model was developed to predict the contact stress state of the press-fitted shaft. Global optimization method, genetic algorithm, and local optimization method, sequential quadratic programming, was applied to the press-fitted assembly to optimize the hub contact edge geometry. The results showed that the maximum contact pressure with optimized hub shape decreased more than 60% compared to conventional hub shape, the maximum contact stress affecting fatigue life reduced about 47%. In addition, hub shape optimization design could be a useful tool, able to increase the load capabilities of press fits concerning wear and fatigue behaviour.

Resumen
A combination of several manufacturing process steps in a simultaneous manner allows savings in energy costs, reduced investment and economizing logistical efforts. In particular, this investigation deals with manufacturing and joining of a frictionally engaged shaft-hub-connection by lateral extrusion. One key challenge of such new process management is the prior layout of both optimal friction conditions during manufacturing process on the one hand and highly expected static friction interaction of joined components in order to transmit tangential and axial forces on the other hand. Therefore, cylindrical, thin-walled hubs have been manufactured and joined to shafts. Several parameters describing the tribological system between shaft and hub such as contact surface topographies and lubricant, have been varied within this study. By measuring the radial deformation of the hub, the contact pressure is determined and a normal force applied to the contact surface of shaft and hub is calculated. When separating hub and shaft in a destructive manner, an extensive axial tensile force is applied and measured. According to Coulomb's friction law, specific friction coefficients are calculated depending on manufacturing process parameters as mentioned above.

In order to investigate the influence of fretting induced by a shrink-fit shaft and hub subjected to rotating bending on crack propagation on different position, small specimens consisted of shaft and hub were tested on the four point rotating bending fatigue test machine. The experimental result shows that the fretting fatigue life of specimen with notch outside the shaft-hub contact is shortest, and the fretting fatigue life of specimen with notch inside the shaft-hub contact is longest.

Resumen
This paper presents an analytical method for determining the bending stresses and deformations in prismatic, noncircular profile shafts with trochoidal cross sections. The so-called higher trochoids can be used as form-fit shaft-hub connections. Hybrid (mixed) higher trochoids (M-profiles) were developed for the special application as a profile contour for the form-fit shaft and hub connections in an earlier work by the author. M-profiles combine the advantages of the two standardised polygonal and spline contours, which are used as shaft-hub connections for the transmission of high torques. In this study, the geometric and mechanical properties of the higher hybrid trochoids were investigated using complex functions to simplify the calculations. The pure bending stress and shaft deflection were determined for M-profiles using bending theory based on the theory of mathematical elasticity. The loading cases consisted of static and rotating bends. Analytical, numerical, and experimental results agreed well. The calculation formulas developed in this work enable reliable and low-cost dimensioning with regard to the stresses and elastic deformations of profile shafts subjected to bending loads.

Resumen
This paper shows possibilities for joining ceramic rotors to metal shafts. The investigations presented include exemplary joining methods for shaft–hub connections for ceramic rotors in gas turbines, as positive, permanent locking, or a combination of both. Active brazing as well as the combination of brazing or adhesive bonding and positive locking are discussed. Different shaft–hub connections were tested. The results of experimental investigations as static shear, bending, and torsion tests as well as dynamic torsion tests will be presented. In addition to the experimental investigations, finite-element analyses were made. Elastic calculations on simple geometries have shown the influence of different parameters like the thermal coefficients and the geometry at the joint face. Calculations were done to reduce the induced tensile stress in the joint and to increase carrying capacity. The calculations were also transferred to the shaft–hub connections to optimize the geometry of the joint faces.

Resumen
The design of compression-fit joints, based on the theory of thick-walled cylinders, is usually referred to shaft—hub couplings carried out between two elements that have an axial symmetric shape. The stress distributions both inside the elements and on the contact surfaces can be defined by the equilibrium and by the compatibility formulae once the total radial interference and the internal and external pressure (the boundary conditions) are known. The complete tensile state of the coupling is defined by two principal stresses: the radial and the hoop tensions. The present article aims at extending the analytic calculation valid for two elements to a number of n elements by means of a sequential solution of the governing equation system. The elements in contact can rotate at a generic angular velocity and can, also, be made of different materials. The overall solution has been derived starting from the hypothesis of the simultaneous presence of axial symmetric geometries and axial symmetric loads. The mathematical model has been verified by comparing the theoretical results with some finite-element analysis calculations performed on the same coupled elements.

The presentation describes how to analyze a flywheel with axially bolted hub-shaft- connection using a conical press fit with help of the finite friction contact model in Creo Simulate 3.0. Since Creo Simulate 3.0 from PTC offers a finite friction contact model implementation just for large displacement analysis, but not for simple analyses with small displacements, the user has to work around a couple of code specific limitations. Best practices are proposed how to do this. Special attention is paid on bolt modeling and preload adjustment. Analysis results are compared with analytical solutions.

The present thesis provides analytical, numerical and experimental fundamental studies for the joining behaviour and the transmission behaviour of a friction and form closure steel-aluminum knurled interference fit. The special feature of this connection is a knurled and oversize hard steel shaft, longitudinally pressed in a soft aluminum hub with a circular bore. The most important parameter for the joining process is the shaft chamfer angle φ. Due to the shaft chamfer angle φ the material of the hub will be formed or cutted during the joining process. By using the relative strength, the quotient of push out force and joining force who describes the joint strength, a first quality parameter for a precise selection of steel-aluminum knurled interference fit has been derived. The description of the experimentally determined torque - twisting angle – curves has shown areas of design criterion and mechanical breakdown. The maximum transmittable torque is achieved by reaching the shearing stress of the knurls in the hub - mechanical breakdown τ S. Similar to the joining and the push out behaviour, the positive influence of the shaft chamfer angle φ is also shown at the transmittable torque. Furthermore, knurled interference fits joined by forming can transmit higher torques of about 40% than interference fits joined by cutting due to the material hardening. The mechanical-physical model for calculating the static transmittable torque is based on the serration connection. Thus, the torque at the design criterion and the maximum transmittable torque at the mechanical breakdown can be found. The consideration of the forming or cutting joining process is described as a function of the shaft chamfer angle φ using the so-called angle-based plastic strain ε plRPV

Interference-fit used widely in current industry, shaft and hub are two main mechanical components. The article is to study the stress state of shaft and hub in interference-fit situation, using 3D graphics software modeling and matching computer-aided engineering (CAE) software analysis. This study divided into static and dynamic parts. Static analysis for direct display interference-fit status, the main purpose is to reduce the stress concentration at both ends of shaft and hub, through changing the geometric shape of shaft ends of the research is able to effectively reduce the stress concentration effect and maintain the amount of torque. Dynamic analysis for simulation of the actual processing and assembly shaft by exert force pressed into the hub, using analysis software to calculate the reaction and use of heating and cooling the shaft and hub, come to understand at which temperature difference conductive to assembly. By the analysis result was informed that the distribution effect of stress concentration as the shape changes, contact pressure will affect the amount of torque. Stepped shaft and rounded shaft better ways to improve the stress concentration effect, the ratio of stepped shaft dc/d below 0.87 is better to reduce stress concentration, the bore and outside diameter ratio d/D should be avoided as far as possible too small, otherwise it will ineffective to heating assembly.

Resumen
In violent conflict, civilians in both urban and rural areas, depend to some extent on the function of trade networks for their welfare. This chapter then seeks to understand the ways in which trade network morphologies shift during a conflict. Analyzing unique survey data via GIS and statistical models, this chapter scrutinizes the dispersal of production networks via a multiplication of petty traders during civil wars in Sierra Leone and Liberia. First, it argues that violent events tended to splinter production networks. Second, it argues that violent events also tended to have a localizing effect on the composition of traders, making them more homogenous with respect to the populations they serve. It implies that cities become hubs of activity for numerous overlapping, but ultimately separate, radial ethnic networks serving rural areas.

Resumen
As the enduring "last frontier," Alaska proves an indispensable context for examining the form and function of American colonialism, particularly in the shift from western continental expansion to global empire. In this richly theorized work, Juliana Hu Pegues evaluates four key historical periods in U.S.-Alaskan history: the Alaskan purchase, the Gold Rush, the emergence of salmon canneries, and the World War II era. In each, Hu Pegues recognizes colonial and racial entanglements between Alaska Native peoples and Asian immigrants. In the midst of this complex interplay, the American colonial project advanced by differentially racializing and gendering Indigenous and Asian peoples, constructing Asian immigrants as "out of place" and Alaska Natives as "out of time." Counter to this space-time colonialism, Native and Asian peoples created alternate modes of meaning and belonging through their literature, photography, political organizing, and sociality. Offering an intersectional approach to U.S. empire, Indigenous dispossession, and labor exploitation, Space-Time Colonialism makes clear that Alaska is essential to understanding both U.S. imperial expansion and the machinations of settler colonialism.

Resumen
In the years since the 2008 financial crisis, U.S. prosecutors have brought dozens of criminal cases against the world’s most powerful banks, charging them with manipulating financial indices, helping their customers evade taxes, evading sanctions, and laundering money. To settle these cases, global banks like UBS, Barclays, HSBC, and BNP Paribas paid tens of billions of dollars in fines. They also agreed to extensive internal reforms, hiring hundreds of compliance officers, spending billions on new systems, and installing independent corporate monitors. In effect, they agreed to become worldwide enforcers of U.S. law and policies. This book examines the U.S. enforcement campaign against global banks across four areas: benchmark manipulation, tax evasion, sanctions violations, and sovereign debt. It shows that U.S. prosecutors have unilaterally carved out a new role as global bank regulators, heralding a fundamental shift in how international finance is overseen. Their ability to do so stems from U.S. control over vital hubs of the international financial system, from which they can threaten global banks with exclusion. In some areas, these unilateral U.S. actions have ushered in important multilateral reforms, such as the rise of automatic tax information exchange and better-regulated financial indices. In other areas, such as financial sanctions, unilateralism has attracted protests from other states and attempts to bypass U.S.-based financial infrastructure, which could undermine the country’s power.

Resumen
In New Zealand and Australia, until recently, neuropsychiatric patients with disorders like Parkinson’s disease, epilepsy, or Huntington’s disease were generally treated in state institutions, and there has been an axiomatic shift to short-stay inpatient units and community management, often with insufficient resources. This chapter explores the provision of adult neuropsychiatric services in the Australasian public health sectors and the current inadequacies in its planning frameworks. Divided by region, the facets of the main neuropsychiatric bodies in each are explored such as the Neuropsychiatric Institute (NPI) in New South Wales and the Royal Melbourne Hospital (RMH) Neuropsychiatry Unit. While there are a number of centres in Australasia that satisfy the ‘hub’ requirement of the ‘hub and spoke’ model recommended for the implementation of neuropsychiatric services, the ‘spokes’ are inconsistently developed, leading to patchy provision across the countries.

Resumen
Polygonal shafts are used in power transmission as alternatives to keyed and splined shafts. They are designed using DIN standards. This research explores the loading strength of the standardized three lobed (P3G) and four lobed (P4C) polygonal shafts and hubs manufactured from the same stock size, subjected to torsional bending load at various fits. Due to complex conformal contact (nonlinear model) between the shaft and the hub, there is no analytical solution and, therefore, Finite Element Method had been used to determine the stresses, after validating experimentally and using the DIN standard. From the analysis, it was found that the hub experienced greater stress than the shaft in all cases and the major stress in a polygonal shaft and hub connection is the contact stress. The clearance fit was found to be the most detrimental fit and the interference fit to be the most suitable for larger power transmission. Owing to its small normal axial stress and hub displacement, the P4C clearance fit has its use in low power transmission where a sliding fit is a requirement. The maximum von Mises stress was located below the surface for P4C and P3G clearance fit, suggesting failure from pitting and fretting on these shafts. All of the stresses were found to be higher in P4C than P3G for similar loading. Therefore, for general use, the P3G profile with an interference fit is recommended.

Resumen
Abstract In this paper, optimization-based design for a minimum weight hub-and-shaft assembly for dual-wheel excavators is presented. Two optimization models are developed: one is based on a keyed hub-to-shaft connection, and the other based on a threaded hub-to-shaft connection. The optimization models are tested and compared with test designs for dual-wheel excavators that are currently in use in industry. It is found that for the test designs: (1) both optimization models generated weight reductions averaging 17%, with reductions ranging from 3% to 30%, (2) both optimization models exhibit significant increases in their weight when subjected to an increasing transverse load on the hub, and (3) hub width is the most influential design variable in determining the weight of the hub-and-shaft assembly.

Resumen
The elastic stress concentrations developed from the keyless, frictionless, static press-fit of a solid shaft into a hub with bore rounded edges are addressed. Derived from an analytical approach, a normalising parameter Φ is employed that accounts for the combined effects on the hub stress concentration of the fillet radius of the hub bore, the shaft radius, the interference, and the Young’s modulus. Compiled with the aid of Finite Elements, several design charts are presented that report the elastic stress concentrations within the hub versus the normalising parameter Φ. Each curve is valid for prescribed ratios of a) the hub inner radius to the outer radius, and b) the fillet radius to the shaft radius. An approximating expression of ample validity is also presented for a prompt evaluation of the hub stress concentration factor.

Resumen
Interference fits are a commonly used mechanical attachment mechanism. They represent a flexible and cost effective method for joining components having cylindrical geometry. An interference fit is constructed when a bush is shrunk and/or pressed onto a shaft with an interfering radial dimension. The strength of the interference fit assembly depends on the shaft and bush dimensions, and must be sufficient to withstand the force or torque reached during normal service.

Resumen
Abstract A high-speed rotor wheel for a wind-tunnel experiment has been designed. The rotor wheel was similar to one in an axial turbine, except that slender bars replaced the blades. The main parameters of the rotor wheel were an outer diameter of 10“, a maximum rotational speed of 24,000 RPM and a maximum transferred torque of 64 lb-ft. Due to the working environment, the rotor had to be designed with high safety margins. The coupling of the rotor wheel with the shaft was found to be the most critical issue, because of the high stress concentration factors associated with the conventional coupling methods. The efforts to reduce the stress concentrations resulted in an advanced coupling design which is the main subject of the present paper. This new design was a special key coupling in which six dowel pins were used for keys. The key slots, now pin-grooves, were placed in bosses on the inner surface of the hub. The hub of the rotor wheel was relatively long, which allowed for applying the coupling near the end faces of the hub, that is, away from the highly loaded centerplane. The long hub resulted in low radial expansion in the coupling region. Therefore, solid contact between the shaft and the hub could be maintained for all working conditions. To develop and verify the design ideas, stress and deformation analyses were carried out using quasi-two-dimensional finite element models. An overall safety factor of 3.7 resulted. The rotor has been built and successfully accelerated over the design speed in a spin test pit.

Resumen
Regarding industrial centrifugal compressors in single shaft design, different configurations with e.g. varying numbers of stages or diverse circumferential speeds, necessitate different shaft diameters. Thus the application of impellers with different hub/tip ratios (dh/d2) is daily routine in industrial practice. Increasing hub/tip ratio leads to higher radii and therefore higher relative speeds, to a reduction in the impeller’s meridional length and hence more rapid diffusion, and to a sharper bending from axial to radial direction. In this paper the impact of hub/tip ratio on stage performance is investigated for three different centrifugal compressor stages, by steady state CFD-calculations. The hub/tip ratio is varied between 0.325 < dh/d2 < 0.45. The relation between design stage flow coefficient and hub/tip ratio is also analysed, both at design and off-design. Thermodynamic behaviour is assessed by 1D-data and also by the investigation of secondary flow features. The current analysis shows, that hub/tip ratio’s influence on characteristics is strongly dependent on the particular stage’s design flow coefficient and circumferential Mach-Number. Increasing a high flow stage’s hub/tip ratio is shown to decrease peak efficiency as well, as to limit the operating range. On the contrary, in case of a low flow stage, design point efficiency is hardly affected, but the characteristic curve is tilted around design point, by applying a different hub/tip ratio. However severity of hub/tip ratio’s impact on thermodynamic behaviour shows to decrease together with stage design flow coefficient.
