Resumen
Close on the thematic heels of her groundbreaking Sex after Fascism, Dagmar Herzog offers us in her new book Cold War Freud: Psychoanalysis in an Age of Catastrophes a further elaboration on her earlier thesis about the complex relationship between sex and politics. Sex after Fascism made an immensely productive but counterintuitive argument, one that crucially relied on the proposition of three historical periods, each defined by its particular relationship with sex(uality). Herzog claimed, first, that German fascism was not sexually repressive; second, that the immediate postwar environment was, on the contrary, sexually repressive; and third, that the “sexual revolution” beginning in the late 1960s and expanding into the 1970s was consciously contesting fascist repression, while in fact it was actually and unconsciously in dialogue with the more immediate past of the postwar era. Her tour de force argument here was that this historical sequencing had the overall effect of obscuring, indeed repressing, the sex-positive policies of the Nazis and therefore “misunderstanding” not only fascism itself but also—and especially—fascism's (sexual) appeal. Herzog suggested that not only did the generation of the 1968-ers espouse a politics of the missed object; more nefariously, the repression of fascism's sexual appeal also opened the road to all sorts of varieties of historical revisionism.

Resumen
How do clinical observations of repression square with experimental evidence suggesting that emotionally arousing memories are especially enduring? This discrepancy can be understood by examining three kinds of memory distortions that give the impression in a clinical context, of repression. Potentially traumatic events such as childhood sexual abuse (CSA) may be subject to ordinary forgetting. Recent research suggests people who fail to understand the sexual nature of CSA report that they remember it less well. In other words, the event occurred and it was forgotten, but not “repressed.” In addition, people may be wrong about experiencing a period of forgetting, i.e. the event occurred but was never forgotten. Finally, people may believe that a particular traumatic event occurred and was repressed when, in fact, it did not happen in the first place. Under certain circumstances, some combination of these distortions could lead to situations that are mistakenly interpreted as repression.

Palavras-chave : Relação pedagógica; educação; cuidado de si; cuidado dos outros; emancipação Sexual relationship and pedagogical relationship: about the care of the self and the care of the others Abstract: Can we draw from Michel Foucault's work a theory of education and of education as emancipation? And what place could the history of sexuality have in this framework? In this article, we focus on the philosopher's last lectures, which give way to a theme of autonomy and freedom with the theses on "concern for the self". We discuss the possibility of considering the epimeletic relation as a form of pedagogical relation, and we ask why and how the question of sexuality allows us to re-evaluate the pedagogical question, shifting the problematic of repression and domination to that of subject formation. We first return to the previous discussions around the repressive hypothesis (I). Then we consider how the equation between epimeletic relation, erotic relation and pedagogical relation is set up in Subjectivity and Truth (II). Finally, we address the problematic of the "concern for the self" in The Hermeneutics of the Subject in relation to the "concern for others", to the political question and to institutions (III). Culturing conditions have been found that engender flocculation of strains 975h+ and 972h− of the fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe Lindner. Both strains separately exhibit asexual self-flocculation and together, sexual co-flocculation. Flocculation is glucose repressible, but that repression is leaky, because self-flocculation can occur during the late logarithmic phase of growth before either of the C or N sources are depleted.

A major debate exists within the mental health field regarding the authenticity of recovered repressed memories involving childhood sexual abuse. Since it is difficult to document events that occurred years ago, a study was conducted in which polygraphy was utilized to test alleged child abusers accused on the basis of recovered memories versus those abusers whose purported victims experienced no repression. The former group was found to be deceptive in only 4% of the cases, in contrast to 78% for the latter subjects. These findings strongly argue against the validity of the concept of repression for acts that might have persisted for years.

It is generally accepted that Qing China (1644–1912) was a straitlaced, sexually repressed society. Robert H. van Gulik, for example, ended his study of sexual life in China with the fall of the Ming dynasty, in part because he believed that Chinese attitudes toward sexuality became much more repressive after the Ming, and the generalizations he made in his book were not appropriate for the Qing (1961:333–36). This dramatic change in attitude has been attributed to the resurgence of Cheng- Zhu Neo-Confucianism, with its strict view of sexual relations in general, and female sexuality in particular (Ropp 1981:120–24).

Resumen
ABSTRACT Methionine added to minimal medium overcomes the repressing effects of ammonium and cyclic AMP (cAMP) on sexual development and efficiently induces mating and sporulation in homothallic strains ofSchizosaccharomyces pombe. In heterothallic strains it induces G1 arrest when cells enter stationary phase. We show that methionine reduces the intracellular cAMP pool and induces the expression of at least two cAMP-repressible genes, includingfbp1 and ste11. The easiest interpretation of the results is that methionine induces sexual development via a cAMP-dependent ste11 signalling pathway.

Resumen
In the american popular imagination, the 1950s and 1960s stand in stark juxtaposition. The conformity of the 1950s contrasts with the rebelliousness of the 1960s. Consumerism was undermined by the challenge of youthful antimaterialism. Repressed sexuality gave way to sexual liberation. Political centrism yielded to polarization. A homogeneous mass culture fragmented into balkanized cultures. Consensus broke down into irrepressible conflict. For conservatives, the 1950s serve as a symbolic “golden age,” an era that atavistic (and terribly forgetful) Americans evoke when pondering current economic, cultural, and social problems. For those on the Left, the 1950s remain the “dark ages” of repression, corporate domination, and racial and sexual subordination.

Resumen
Frank Norris's emphasis on sex is best seen as part of a cultural response to Darwin's theory of sexual selection. Following Joseph Le Conte's effort to spiritualize evolution and move beyond Darwin and the neo-Darwinians, Norris first gave us characters like Vandover and McTeague-more fully animalistic than any American characters before them-and finally characters like the highly civilized and somewhat "divine" Laura Jadwin in The Pit. All of Norris's characters contend with the elements of sexual selection defined by Darwin-e.g., the male's "secondary sexual character" of "prehensile" power or the power of sexual attraction in music and dance. Only his later characters succeed in transcending sexual selection to express "love," a product of higher evolution that is simply beyond primitive characters like McTeague or people of mixed race in Norris's novels. Norris is best seen as a participant (along with Le Conte) in "the eclipse of Darwinism" by several "anti-Darwinian evolution theories" at the turn of the century. Norris's role in this cultural movement included his use of Darwin's theory of the expression and repression of emotions in order to repress, and to present characters who repressed, the sexual instinct. It is ironic that his most forceful effort in this regard (in The Pit) appeared at the moment when a new theory was developing, in popular Freudianism, that the sexual instinct must not be repressed.

Resumen
In both sexes, the Drosophila genital disc contains the female and male genital primordia. The sex determination gene doublesex controls which of these primordia will develop and which will be repressed. In females, the presence of Doublesex(F) product results in the development of the female genital primordium and repression of the male primordium. In males, the presence of Doublesex(M) product results in the development and repression of the male and female genital primordia, respectively. This report shows that Doublesex(F) prevents the induction of decapentaplegic by Hedgehog in the repressed male primordium of female genital discs, whereas Doublesex(M) blocks the Wingless pathway in the repressed female primordium of male genital discs. It is also shown that Doublesex(F) is continuously required during female larval development to prevent activation of decapentaplegic in the repressed male primordium, and during pupation for female genital cytodifferentiation. In males, however, it seems that Doublesex(M) is not continuously required during larval development for blocking the Wingless signaling pathway in the female genital primordium. Furthermore, Doublesex(M) does not appear to be needed during pupation for male genital cytodifferentiation. Using dachshund as a gene target for Decapentaplegic and Wingless signals, it was also found that Doublesex(M) and Doublesex(F) both positively and negatively control the response to these signals in male and female genitalia, respectively. A model is presented for the dimorphic sexual development of the genital primordium in which both Doublesex(M) and Doublesex(F) products play positive and negative roles.

Resumen
Gametocytes are nonreplicative sexual forms that mediate malaria transmission to a mosquito vector. They are generated from asexual blood-stage parasites that proliferate in the circulation. However, little is known about how this transition is genetically regulated. Here, we report that an Apetala2 (AP2) family transcription factor, AP2-G2, regulates this transition as a transcriptional repressor. Disruption of AP2-G2 in the rodent malaria parasite Plasmodium berghei did not prevent commitment to the sexual stage but did halt development before the appearance of sex-specific morphologies. ChIP-seq analysis revealed that AP2-G2 targeted ∼1,500 genes and recognized a five-base motif in their promoters. Most of these target genes are required for asexual proliferation of the parasites in the blood, suggesting that AP2-G2 blocks the program that precedes asexual replication to promote conversion to the sexual stage. Microarray analysis showed that the identified targets constituted ∼70% of the up-regulated genes in AP2-G2–depleted parasites, suggesting that AP2-G2 actually functions as a repressor in gametocytes. A promoter assay using a centromere plasmid demonstrated that the binding motif functions as a cis-acting negative regulatory element. These results suggest that global transcriptional repression, which occurs during the initial phase of gametocytogenesis, is an essential step in Plasmodium sexual development.

Sexual abuse of children has garnered a substantial amount of empirical research, state and federal legislation, and media coverage in the past several decades. This article briefly examines the history of child maltreatment and child sexual abuse (CSA) and societal responses to it. A review of selected articles on CSA that were published since the inception of Families in Society reveals how our knowledge of and ideas about sexual abuse, the perpetrators, responses to abuse allegations, and the Freudian concept of repression have changed over time. The phenomenon of repressed and recovered memories of abuse is also discussed, including the articles that were published in the journal. Despite continued disagreement in the field between researchers and clinicians, a summary is provided detailing points of consensus related to CSA and recovered memories.

Resumen
Sex determination of germ cells is vital to creating the sexual dichotomy of germ cell development, thereby ensuring sexual reproduction. However, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Here, we show that ZGLP1, a conserved transcriptional regulator with GATA-like zinc fingers, determines the oogenic fate in mice. ZGLP1 acts downstream of bone morphogenetic protein, but not retinoic acid (RA), and is essential for the oogenic program and meiotic entry. ZGLP1 overexpression induces differentiation of in vitro primordial germ cell–like cells (PGCLCs) into fetal oocytes by activating the oogenic programs repressed by Polycomb activities, whereas RA signaling contributes to oogenic program maturation and PGC program repression. Our findings elucidate the mechanism for mammalian oogenic fate determination, providing a foundation for promoting in vitro gametogenesis and reproductive medicine.

In recent years, the law in the area of recovered memories in child sexual abuse cases has developed rapidly. See J.K. Murray, “Repression, Memory & Suggestibility: A Call for Limitations on the Admissibility of Repressed Memory Testimony in Abuse Trials,” University of Colorado Law Review, 66 (1995): 477-522, at 479. Three cases have defined the scope of liability to third parties. The cases, decided within six months of each other, all involved lawsuits by third parties against therapists, based on treatment in which the patients recovered memories of sexual abuse. The New Hampshire Supreme Court, in Hungerford v. Jones, 722 A.2d 478 (N.H. 1998), allowed such a claim to survive, while the supreme courts in Iowa, in J.A.H. v. Wadle & Associates, 589 N.W.2d 256 (Iowa 1999), and California, in Eear v. Sills, 82 Cal. Rptr. 281 (1991), rejected lawsuits brought by nonpatients for professional liability.

Violence reproduces the system of aggression and carries emotive states of individuals. Power and violence are interrelated. The definition of violence differs according to the definitions of power and politics. It gets disclosure according to its relation with their attachment with the social system and human relations. All forms of violence have short- and long-term negative effects on mental, physical and spiritual well-being. Ritual legitimizes the violence with the notion of death that is ever present in any sacrificial ritual. Women of color have to endure different types of violence. Psychological and spiritual violence cannot be seen and easily be measured for it is the matter of personal feeling and experience. Black women have to endure violence in their own home, their culture and general society. They find themselves suspended spiritually, culturally, economically and psychologically carrying the burden of multiple fold repression as black women. They are doubly repressed as being black in racial society and being women in patriarchal society. Racial, ritual and sexual violence, repression and resistance constitute black experience as a part and parcel of colored women of American life

Resumen
Sexual reproduction of Plasmodium parasites takes place in anopheline mosquitoes, where male and female gametes fuse to form zygotes and then ookinetes. These processes are orchestrated by stage-specific protein expression, which is mediated in part by translational repression. Accumulating evidence shows that RNA binding proteins (RBPs) play crucial roles in these processes. Here, we report the characterization of P. berghei 103 (Pb103), which encodes a protein possessing double zinc finger domains (ZFs), an RBP. Reporter parasites expressing azami green fluorescent protein (AGFP) under the endogenous Pb103 gene promoter (Pb103-AGFP reporter) showed that the AGFP fluorescent signal was detected from gametes to ookinetes, while AGFP mRNA was translationally repressed in female gametocytes. The Pb103-disrupted parasites (Pb103(−)) grew and produced gametocytes with similar efficiencies to those of wild-type parasites. However, no oocysts were formed in mosquitoes fed Pb103(−). An in vitro fertilization assay showed abortion at the zygote stage in Pb103(−), suggesting that Pb103 plays a critical role in zygote/ookinete development. Cross-fertilization assays with Pb103(−) and male- or female-sterile parasites revealed that Pb103 was essential exclusively for female gametes. To identify the domains critical for zygote/ookinete development, transgenic parasites expressing partially deleted Pb103 were generated and assayed for ookinete maturation. As a result, deleting either of two ZFs but not the C-terminal region abolished zygote/ookinete development, highlighting the indispensable roles of ZFs in parasite sexual development, most likely via translational repression.

Resumen
AbstractAn X chromosome counting process determines sex in Caenorhabditis elegans. The dose of X chromosomes is translated into sexual fate by a set of X-linked genes that together control the activity of the sex-determination and dosage-compensation switch gene, xol-1. The double dose of X elements in XX animals represses xol-1 expression, promoting the hermaphrodite fate, while the single dose of X elements in XO animals permits high xol-1 expression, promoting the male fate. Previous work has revealed at least four signal elements that repress xol-1 expression at two levels, transcriptional and post-transcriptional. The two molecularly characterized elements include an RNA binding protein and a nuclear hormone receptor homolog. Here we explore the roles of the two mechanisms of xol-1 repression and further investigate how the combined dose of X signal elements ensures correct, sex-specific expression of xol-1. By studying the effects of increases and decreases in X signal element dose on male and hermaphrodite fate, we demonstrate that signal elements repress xol-1 cumulatively, such that full repression of xol-1 in XX animals results from the combined effect of individual elements. Complete transformation from the hermaphrodite to the male fate requires a decrease in the dose of all four elements, from two copies to one. We show that both mechanisms of xol-1 repression are essential and act synergistically to keep xol-1 levels low in XX animals. However, increasing repression by one mechanism can compensate for loss of the other, demonstrating that each mechanism can exert significant xol-1 repression on its own. Finally, we present evidence suggesting that xol-1 activity can be set at intermediate levels in response to an intermediate X signal.

Resumen
This article explores therapists' responses to clients' suspicions that they have repressed memories of childhood sexual abuse (CSA). Each participant was randomly assigned one of two vignettes, varied for gender, each concerning a client who suspects that he/she is a victim of CSA. Following the vignette, a series of questions regarding the client assesses the participants' ratings of diagnoses, treatment goals, treatment plans, appropriate responses, and validity of suspicions. Participants were significantly more likely to endorse a diagnosis of borderline personality disorder and endorse treatments focusing on present symptoms over treatments focusing on the client's past. Participants were unlikely to endorse controversial treatments, suggestive statements, or strong opinions regarding the client's suspicions of CSA. The client's gender had a significant effect on diagnoses only. These results do not support reports that many therapists neglect clients' current symptoms and instead focus on memories, use controversial techniques, make suggestive statements regarding abuse, or immediately assume that their clients have repressed memories.

ABSTRACTAs a successful commensal and pathogen of humans,Candida albicansencounters a wide range of environmental conditions. Among them, ambient pH, which changes frequently and affects many biological processes in this species, is an important factor, and the ability to adapt to pH changes is tightly linked with pathogenesis and morphogenesis. In this study, we report that pH has a profound effect on white-opaque switching and sexual mating inC. albicans. Acidic pH promotes white-to-opaque switching under certain culture conditions but represses sexual mating. The Rim101-mediated pH-sensing pathway is involved in the control of pH-regulated white-opaque switching and the mating response. Phr2 and Rim101 could play a major role in acidic pH-induced opaque cell formation. Despite the fact that the cyclic AMP (cAMP) signaling pathway does not play a major role in pH-regulated white-opaque switching and mating, white and opaque cells of thecyr1/cyr1mutant, which is defective in the production of cAMP, showed distinct growth defects under acidic and alkaline conditions. We further discovered that acidic pH conditions repressed sexual mating due to the failure of activation of the Ste2-mediated α-pheromone response pathway in opaqueacells. The effects of pH changes on phenotypic switching and sexual mating could involve a balance of host adaptation and sexual reproduction inC. albicans.

Children are the future generation who require protection from violence, whether physical, psychological and sexual violence. This study seeks to uncover such problems; (1) the form of legal protection of children against sexual violence victims in Surabaya; (2) the constraints in the implementation of legal protection of children against sexual violence victims in Surabaya; (3) attempts to maximize the implementation of the legal protection of children against sexual violence victims in Surabaya. The present study is a field research. The primary data obtained through interviews while secondary data obtained from documents, law books and law journals. Data analysis technique using content analysis that is the analysis technique by describing the substance of the existing problems. The results of the research revealed that; Firstly, the form of legal protection of children against sexual violence victims in Surabaya can be seen from the two forms, they are preventive protection and repressive legal protection. Preventive legal protection is done before the sexual crimes, while the protection of repressive laws is done after the acts of sexual violence; secondly, constraints faced in the implementation of legal protection, they are; the victim is introvert, the act of hoodlum, the societies’ individual attitude that is really powerful and a lack of public understanding about children’s rights; Third, ways and means need to be done to maximize the implementation of legal protection is a way to provide understanding to parents and children about the dangers of sexual violence, and the need for strengthening the commitment and systematic and massive cooperation of law enforcement officials.
Victimological dimension of new criminality forms is a specific challenge for contemporary criminal law systems; new time brings new forms of criminality, new victims, but also new ways and opportunities for more efficient protection of victims. At the same time with review and improvement of existing standards of victims` protection, contemporary criminality control systems show strong tendency toward compromising the general position of the victim. Victim?s interests are being instrumentalized because of the justification of changes in criminality control in the direction of significant strengthening of criminal law repression. The crime which is emotionalized with the affective media presentation of the victim justifies stricter penal policy and provides the populist support for repressive criminality control strategies and criminal law expansionism. The aim of the paper is the analysis of the mechanisms of victim ?use? in contemporary criminality control and the examination of its consequences, with special review on domestic circumstances through analysis of the Code on special measures for prevention of crimes against sexual freedom towards juveniles (Marija`s Code).

Resumen
This article argues that through her songs and music videos Pagan Poetry, Cocoon and Hidden Place, versatile artist Björk is able to carve out a space for erotic tenderness. This erotic tenderness will be unearthed as a queer or minor sexuality, in the sense that it goes against a phallic and genital majoritarian account of sexuality. Tender sexuality might not be obviously queer, yet a detour through the early work of Freud will show how our hegemonic account of sexuality is built upon a repression of such a tender sexuality. Freud’s psychoanalysis is only able to regard this sexual tenderness in a negative vein as a pathological symptom. Supported primarily by the works of Deleuze, Guattari and Muñoz, this article will propose that Björk’s artistry is able to produce a line of flight outside of this tender-less sexuality, liberating an otherwise repressed minor tender sexuality through a visually and sonically becoming-woman, becoming-child, becoming-BwO and becoming-molecular.

Resumen
Abstract The mating-type locus in the haploid filamentous fungus, Neurospora crassa, controls mating and sexual development. The fusion of reproductive structures of opposite mating type, A and a, is required to initiate sexual reproduction. However, the fusion of hyphae of opposite mating type during vegetative growth results in growth inhibition and cell death, a process that is mediated by the tol locus. Mutations in tol are recessive and suppress mating-type-associated heterokaryon incompatibility. In this study, we describe the cloning and characterization of tol. The tol gene encodes a putative 1011-amino-acid polypeptide with a coiled-coil domain and a leucine-rich repeat. Both regions are required for tol activity. Repeat-induced point mutations in tol result in mutants that are wild type during vegetative growth and sexual reproduction, but that allow opposite mating-type individuals to form a vigorous heterokaryon. Transcript analyses show that tol mRNA is present during vegetative growth but absent during a cross. These data suggest that tol transcription is repressed to allow the coexistence of opposite mating-type nuclei during the sexual reproductive phase. tol is expressed in a mat A, mat a, A/a partial diploid and in a mating-type deletion strain, indicating that MAT A-1 and MAT a-1 are not absolutely required for transcription or repression of tol. These data suggest that TOL may rather interact with MAT A-1 and/or MAT a-1 (or downstream products) to form a death-triggering complex.

Resumen
Thanks to the chosen methods we were able to investigate the features of three types of sexual education in the family: repressive, avoidant and expressive. Persons with a repressive type of sex education are the least sexually well-off, and their sexual scenarios are geared to compliance with existing rules (religious, ethical) and exclude pleasure. Respondents with the avoidant type of upbringing try to know everything in their own experience, thus filling in the lack of information, overestimating the number of sexual relations and their presence, they are dominated by a hedonistic and playful approach to sex without burdening themselves to build a healthy relationship, as well as the level of sex. Individuals with the expressive type are most capable of building a harmonious relationship, the most sexual well-being, and their sexual scenarios are flexible and diverse. Sex education is a powerful factor in shaping one's own sexuality and the way it is realized, which is reflected in the sexual scenarios chosen by the person.

Resumen
The purpose of this study is to determine the factors that cause sexual violence that occurs in children and to determine the efforts to overcome cases of sexual violence against children in Gorontalo Regency. The research method used is empirical legal research using a case approach and a conceptual approach. The results of the study found that there were five factors that caused cases of sexual violence against children in Gorontalo Regency, including: the lack of family responsibility, the lack of social control from the community, the technology factor, the alcohol factor, the lack of understanding and the inculcation of norms in the order of life. . The most dominant factors according to the percentage of cases of sexual violence against children in Gorontalo Regency are the lack of parental responsibility and technology (social media) factors. Efforts to prevent and overcome cases of sexual violence against children in Gorontalo Regency are carried out with preventive efforts, namely a form of prevention before the occurrence of cases of sexual violence against children. Preventive efforts are divided into five efforts, including: applying self-awareness, active communication with family, using technology as best as possible, choosing a good environment, socialization from related parties. The other efforts are repressive efforts, one of the forms of efforts to overcome when there have been cases of sexual violence against children. Repressive efforts are carried out by providing criminal sanctions for crimes that have been committed by the perpetrators. As well as repressive efforts to victims by providing psychological assistance and legal assistance.

Resumen
Abstract Androgen receptor (AR) is important in male sexual differentiation and testicular function. Here, we demonstrate the regulation of AR expression and its transactivation by the basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) transcription factor Pod-1, the expression of which in postnatal testis reciprocally coincides with the expression of AR. Pod-1 represses the promoter activity of AR, possibly through its E-box. An AR promoter region of 169 bp, which harbors one canonical E-box, is sufficient for the Pod-1-repression and bound by purified Pod-1 proteins. Pod-1 also suppresses the transactivation of AR. Transient transfection analyses of mammalian cells show that Pod-1 represses AR transactivation in a dose-dependent manner. Furthermore, yeast two-hybrid, glutathione-S-transferase-pull-down, and coimmunoprecipitation analyses reveal that Pod-1 directly associates with AR through its N-terminal region and through the DNA binding-hinge domain of AR. Interestingly, Pod-1 recruits histone deacetylase (HDAC)-1 to inhibit both promoter activity and transactivation of AR. Overexpression of HDAC1 further inhibits the Pod-1-mediated repressions and Pod-1 directly interacts with HDAC1. Furthermore, chromatin immunoprecipitation assay reveals that HDAC1 is recruited with Pod-1 to the endogenous AR promoter and the androgen-regulated Pem promoter. Taken together, these results suggest that Pod-1, which controls AR transcription and function, may play an important role in the development and function of the testis.

Resumen
The Schizosaccharomyces pombe pcr1 gene encodes a bZIP protein that apparently belongs to the cyclic AMP response element (CRE)-binding protein/activating transcription factor family. The deduced pcr1 gene product consists of 171 amino acid residues and is most similar to the mammalian CRE-BP1. A glutathione S-transferase-Pcr1 fusion protein produced in Escherichia coli was able to bind specifically to the CRE motif in vitro. Analysis with anti-Pcr1 serum suggested that Pcr1 is included in the major CRE-binding factors present in the S. pombe cell extract. Disruption of the pcr1 gene was not lethal, but the disruptant showed cold-sensitive growth on rich medium. The disruptant was also inefficient in mating and sporulation, though it was not completely sterile. Expression of the ste11 gene, which encodes a key transcription factor for sexual development, was greatly reduced in the disruptant, and overexpression of ste11+ suppressed the deficiency of the pcr1 disruptant in sexual development. It has been shown that expression of ste11 is negatively regulated by cyclic AMP-dependent protein kinase (PKA) and that the loss of PKA activity results in ectopic sexual development. Disruption of pcr1 blocked ectopic sexual development. Furthermore, disruption of pcr1 reduced expression of fbp1, a glucose-repressible gene negatively regulated by PKA. These results suggest that Pcr1 is a putative transcriptional regulator whose activity may be controlled by PKA. Alternatively, its activity may be independent of PKA, and full induction of ste11 and fbp1 expression requires the function of Pcr1 in addition to elimination of the repression by PKA.

Resumen
ABSTRACTBrain development requires precise regulation of axon outgrowth, guidance and termination by multiple signaling and adhesion molecules. How the expression of these neurodevelopmental regulators is transcriptionally controlled is poorly understood. The Caenorhabditis elegans SMD motor neurons terminate axon outgrowth upon sexual maturity and partially retract their axons during early adulthood. Here we show that C-terminal binding protein 1 (CTBP-1), a transcriptional corepressor, is required for correct SMD axonal development. Loss of CTBP-1 causes multiple defects in SMD axon development: premature outgrowth, defective guidance, delayed termination and absence of retraction. CTBP-1 controls SMD axon guidance by repressing the expression of SAX-7, an L1 cell adhesion molecule (L1CAM). CTBP-1-regulated repression is crucial because deregulated SAX-7/L1CAM causes severely aberrant SMD axons. We found that axonal defects caused by deregulated SAX-7/L1CAM are dependent on a distinct L1CAM, called LAD-2, which itself plays a parallel role in SMD axon guidance. Our results reveal that harmonization of L1CAM expression controls the development and maturation of a single neuron.

Resumen
Women face disturbing realities of repression in Western society, which are built, mainly, through the establishment of stereotypes. One of the main ways such repression takes place is through the limiting of women’s sexuality expression. In the Caribbean author Grace Nichols’s The Fat Black Woman’s Poems (1986), the fat black woman provides us with new images to deal with her sexuality and to understand it as more than the mere sexual through Audre Lorde’s concept of the erotic. In the poems, the fat black woman uses the erotic to empower herself and to question the system of patriarchy. By doing so points out the importance of sexual freedom for women to gain control of their own forms of representation and, ultimately, their own lives.

Resumen
AbstractWhy do unthreatening social groups become targets of state repression? Repression of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people is especially puzzling since sexual minorities, unlike many ethnic minorities, pose no credible violent challenge to the state. This article contends that revolutionary governments are disproportionately oppressive toward sexual minorities for strategic and ideological reasons. Since revolutions create domestic instability, revolutionaries face unique strategic incentives to target ‘unreliable’ groups and to demonstrate an ability to selectively punish potential dissidents by identifying and punishing ‘invisible’ groups. Moreover, revolutionary governments are frequently helmed by elites with exclusionary ideologies – such as communism, fascism and Islamism – which represent collectivities rather than individuals. Elites adhering to these views are thus likely to perceive sexual minorities as liberal, individualistic threats to their collectivist projects. Statistical analysis using original data on homophobic repression demonstrates that revolutionary governments are more likely to target LGBT individuals, and that this effect is driven by exclusionary ideologues. Case study evidence from Cuba further indicates that the posited strategic and ideological mechanisms mediate the relationship between revolutionary government and homophobic repression.

PALABRAS CLAVE: violencia, represión franquista, huidos, guerrillero, ejecuciones extrajudiciales ABSTRACT After the victory of General Franco in the Spanish Civil War, complete peace did not come to all corners of Spain. The lack of a policy of national reconciliation, together with the maintenance of strong repressive activity, led some Republicans to take refuge in the mountains with no other purpose than to save their lives. Over time, and in parallel with the evolution of World War II, the Communist Party of Spain managed to provide these fugitives with political objectives and create guerrilla groups, which contributed to the aggravation of rural violence. In this article, using documentation from military archives, political parties and the security forces, as well as oral history, we address the persistence of violence in rural areas: killings, extrajudicial executions, public executions, ley de fugas, robbery, kidnapping, sexual assault and other forms of excesses and oppression that were normal in rural areas during the 1940s. KEY WORDS: violence, Francoist repression, escapees, guerrilla fighters, extrajudicial executions

Resumen
Insect cuticular hydrocarbons (CHCs) serve as important intersexual signaling chemicals and generally show variation between the sexes, but little is known about the generation of sexually dimorphic hydrocarbons (SDHCs) in insects. In this study, we report the molecular mechanism and biological significance that underlie the generation of SDHC in the German cockroach Blattella germanica. Sexually mature females possess more C29 CHCs, especially the contact sex pheromone precursor 3,11-DimeC29. RNA interference (RNAi) screen against the fatty acid elongase family members combined with heterologous expression of the genes in yeast revealed that both BgElo12 and BgElo24 were involved in hydrocarbon (HC) production, but BgElo24 is of wide catalytic activities and is able to provide substrates for BgElo12, and only the female-enriched BgElo12 is responsible for sustaining female-specific HC profile. Repressing BgElo12 masculinized the female CHC profile, decreased contact sex pheromone level, and consequently reduced the sexual attractiveness of female cockroaches. Moreover, the asymmetric expression of BgElo12 between the sexes is modulated by sex differentiation cascade. Specifically, male-specific BgDsx represses the transcription of BgElo12 in males, while BgTra is able to remove this effect in females. Our study reveals a novel molecular mechanism responsible for the formation of SDHCs and also provide evidences on shaping of the SDHCs by sexual selection, as females use them to generate high levels of contact sex pheromone.

The structural gene for the catabolite-repressed, substrate-induced NAD+-specifïc glutamate dehydrogenase (gdh-1) of Neurospora crassa was disrupted using the process of repeat-induced point mutation (RIP). Plasmids containing incomplete copies of the gene, along with selectable markers, were introduced into germinated conidia by electroporation. The sexual progeny of a transformant containing an ectopically integrated copy of a plasmid, harbouring the 5′ flanking region and a part of the coding sequence of gdh-1 DNA, was examined for the occurrence of RIP by (i) Southern blot analysis of the genomic DNA digested with the isoschizomers MboI and Sau3A, (ii) Northern blot analysis of total RNA in cultures subjected to repression and induction conditions for NAD–GDH, (iii) direct assessment of enzymatic activity, and (iv) evaluation of protein levels by Western blot analysis using a polyclonal anti-GDH IgG preparation. Attempts were made at delineating different regions of the gene exhibiting RIP by using 32P-labelled DNA probes, corresponding to (i) the complete gene, (ii) a fragment containing the 5′ flanking region plus two-thirds of the coding sequence, and (iii) the 5′ flanking segment alone. The extent and relative location of RIP, as revealed by these hybridization probes, appeared to correlate with changes in specific activity under repression and derepression conditions. Mutant progeny, thus recovered, included isolates with altered regulatory features, such as constitutive expression, inability to elicit derepression, higher-than-wildtype GDH levels under derepression and inefficient repression.Key words: glutamate dehydrogenase, Neurospora, repeat-induced point mutations, RIP, regulatory mutants.

SynopsisWe sought studies which have attempted to test whether memories of childhood sexual abuse can be repressed. Despite our broad search criteria, which excluded only unsystematic anecdotal reports, we found only four applicable studies. We then examined these studies to assess whether the investigators: (1) presented confirmatory evidence that abuse had actually occurred; and (2) demonstrated that their subjects had actually developed amnesia for the abuse. None of the four studies provided both clear confirmation of trauma and adequate documentation of amnesia in their subjects. Thus, present clinical evidence is insufficient to permit the conclusion that individuals can repress memories of childhood sexual abuse. This finding is surprising, since many writers have implied that hundreds of thousands, or even millions of persons harbour such repressed memories. In view of the widespread recent public and scientific interest in the areas of trauma and memory, it is important to investigate further whether memories of sexual abuse can be repressed.

Resumen
The increasingly frequent clinical reports of the recovery of repressed memories of childhood sexual abuse have drawn both skepticism and support in the analytic community. Two contrasting paradigms are offered to account for the processes by which fully repressed memories are recovered. On the one hand, the analyst's belief that one can reconstruct early traumatic experience creates fertile ground for overt and covert suggestion, which, in conjunction with an anxious patient seeking affiliation, may lead to the production of false memories. On the other hand, the analyst's belief in the likelihood of repressed abuse and that it can be reconstructed may constitute a necessary precondition for the emergence of valid memories. With these beliefs providing an essential holding environment, the recovery of repressed memories of sexual trauma may be an instance of the retrieval of state-dependent memory. Although the preponderance of evidence favors the suggestion hypothesis, the evidence is not conclusive. Which paradigm the analyst adopts, however, carries enormous clinical implications.

Resumen
The basidiomycete Coprinus cinereus has many advantages as a model organism for studying sexual development and meiosis, but it has been difficult to investigate using reverse-genetics methods, such as gene disruption by homologous recombination. Here, gene repression by dsRNA-mediated gene silencing was tried as an alternative method for reverse-genetics studies. It was shown that transformation of the LIM15/DMC1 dsRNA expression construct (LIM15dsRNA) resulted in genomic insertion of LIM15dsRNA and paucity of the LIM15/DMC1 transcript. First, LIM15dsRNA was transformed into the homothallic strain AmutBmut to generate a homozygote in which both nuclei had a copy of LIM15dsRNA. The LIM15/DMC1-repressed strain showed abnormal homologous chromosome synapsis during meiosis. Basidiospore production was reduced to 16 % by the induction of dsRNA. However, approximately 60 % of basidiospores were viable. Next, a heterozygote was generated in which one nucleus had a copy of LIM15dsRNA. The phenotype was similar to that of the homozygote. These results are not only the first demonstration of dsRNA-mediated gene silencing in a member of the homobasidiomycete fungi, to which 90 % of mushroom species belong, but also the first successful use of a reverse-genetics approach in C. cinereus research.

Resumen
Women involved in out-patient treatment for substance abuse were interviewed to examine their recollections of childhood sexual abuse. Overall, 54% of the 105 women reported a history of childhood sexual abuse. Of these, the majority (81%) remembered all or part of the abuse their whole lives; 19% reported they forgot the abuse for a period of time, and later the memory returned. Women who remembered the abuse their whole lives reported a clearer memory, with a more detailed picture. They also reported greater intensity of feelings at the time the abuse happened. Women who remembered the abuse their whole lives did not differ from others in terms of the violence of the abuse or whether the violence was incestuous. These data bear on current discussions concerning the extent to which repression is a common way of coping with childhood sexual abuse trauma, and also bear on some widely held beliefs about the correlates of repression.

Resumen
This article examines how female conditioning and sexual repression affect the woman’s sense of self, womanhood, identity and her place in society. It argues that the woman’s body is at the core of the many sites of gender struggles/ politics. Accordingly, the woman’s body must be decolonised for her to attain true emancipation. On the one hand, this study identifies the grave consequences of sexual repression, how it robs women of their freedom to choose whom to love or marry, the freedom to seek legal redress against sexual abuse and terror, and how it hinders their quest for self-determination. On the other hand, it underscores the need to give women sexual freedom that must be respected and enforced by law for the overall good of society.

Resumen
Eight hundred and eighty-seven students from two major universities in Delhi, India, were surveyed, using a self-administered questionnaire, about their sexual knowledge, attitudes and behaviour. The data show that female students seem to be rejecting traditional Indian repressive sexual standards of premarital and non-procreative sex and the gender differences are beginning to narrow. Despite their sexual awareness, the students were highly ignorant of the facts of life. Being male and married did not make them more knowledgeable.
