Resumen
Sex-role socialisation begins from the day a child is born, and permeates all aspects of his or her life. As the child develops s/he gradually comes to acquire the behaviours and attitudes deemed appropriate for his or her gender. These behaviours begin to appear as early as three years, when a child's choice of play items becomes sex-typed. This development is the product of changes effected in child's behaviour via reinforcement (positive or negative) by the modelling and influence of significant others (especially parents, peers and the mass media). Such behavioural change is accompanied by cognitive development in regard to the child's concepts or schema regarding sex-roles and the child's personal identification with these roles. Of particular importance to the preschool child is storybooks; these act as mirrors to the outside world for the developing child. However, the messages are often stereotyped. The purpose of this study was to ascertain the extent to which children's adoption of sex-roles was amenable to change as a result of direct intervention, in terms of the effect of non-sexist stories on children's sex-typed toy-play behaviour. Eight sex-typed preschool children (four boys, four girls), from a Day Care Centre were selected to participate in the study. The experimental design used was single-case, where each child served as his or her own control. Specifically, the baseline phase involved the individual reading of a gender neutral story, followed by an observation of the child's toyplay behaviour, when presented with a set of sex-typed girl and boy toys. The intervention phase followed the same fonnat, however two non-sexist stories were used: a "girl" story and a "boy" story, with each displaying non-traditional behaviours for the relevant gender. The design was counter-balanced in regard to the order of presentation of the non-traditional stories, both for each child, and across the eight children. Thus four of the subjects' received the stories in the order ABC ACB and for the remaining four it was ACB ABC (A=Neutral, B=boy and C=girl). The 220 observations were conducted over a five month period, with data being plotted on a daily basis. The videotapes of the sessions were coded for any changes in levels of sex-typed play, thus the percentage of total time each child played with either the "girl" toys or "boy" toys was calculated. On completion of the observations the experimenter individually asked the children questions about the story and administered a number of tasks aimed primarily at ascertaining the children's recall and understanding of the stories. The subjects results are discussed on an individual basis, and then this is followed by an analysis of the three distinct trends that emerged. The first trend was that for some of the children the stories appeared to have an effect on their toy-play behaviour by increasing their levels of non-sex-typed play. For the second group, there appeared to be a temporary effect on toy-play behaviour and for the last there appeared to be no effect at all, that is there was no change from baseline. This is followed by an analysis of sex differences in the results, in that girls appeared to be influenced more by the girl stories than the boys were, by the boy stories. The findings are discussed from a number of theoretical perspectives on sex-role development, namely Social Learning, Social Cognitive and Gender Schema theories. The implications of the present research in an educational context are discussed, with particular reference to the importance of future research into the introduction of a more egalitarian curriculum being introduced into the preschool setting to help alleviate the restrictions stereotyping places on the human personality.

Kantartzi, Evagelia. "Sex role stereotypes in Greek primary school textbooks". Thesis, University of Hull, 2000. http://hydra.hull.ac.uk/resources/hull:8059.

Texto completo
Resumen
My purpose in this research is to examine the way in which the two sexes are presented in school textbooks. The incentive for pursuing my research was my own experience of using school textbooks and the observation of everyday reality. Until the present time research in Greece regarding the image of the two sexes has been limited to the primary school reading-scheme books. With this study I intend to give a detailed picture of the beliefs about sex roles as these are presented through the whole range of school textbooks. My ambition is that my work - in combination with other similar studies - will help instructors to comprehend and point out the traditional standard beliefs about the two sexes depicted in the textbooks which are used on a daily basis in schools in Greece. This research could sensitise instructors and simultaneously help them to be aware of and recognise the stereotype beliefs in the books they use. In this way they will be able, with the appropriate interventions and discussions, to consider their validity in relation to the children they teach. The present study is presented in 14 chapters. It is divided into two parts. The first part deals with the wide theoretical-work related to socialisation and the sex roles (Chapters 1-2). The third chapter discusses the agents of sex role socialisation (the family, peer groups, media, school). The fourth chapter studies the woman's professional role. Chapter 5 includes a brief description of the Greek educational system and an examination of a girl's place within it. The sixth deals with books as a factor in the configuration of the sex role. Chapter 7 includes a review of the related studies. The second part of the thesis includes the main body of the study, the methodology (chapter 8), the analysis of the results (chapters 9-13) and finally the conclusions and suggestions (chapter 14). Chapters 9-13 have their own separate bibliographies to facilitate reference for readers interested in one particular curriculum area.

Resumen
The Third Generation Poetry that existed in the 1980s’ Chinese literary circle has usually been regarded as the rebellion of the prevailing Misty Poetry. The Third Generation poets began to experiment with colloquial poems which were emphasizing on individual expressions and advocating for the importance of “self”, including the ego and sub-consciousness of both male and female. Through the gender perspective, it could be observed the Third Generation Poetry was rich in gender flavor. The poets especially those of the Female Poetry and the Boorish Fellows Poetry had respectively expressed the awareness and concerns of their own with poem writings. The Female Poetry, featured with the structure of group poems, the rhetoric of metaphor and symbol, the connotation of the nocturnal consciousness and the lyric of confession, was a showcase for female perception. The issues regarding ego, private space, social identity, pain and love as well as "body writing" had been narrated and depicted by most of women writers. In the meantime, the poetry written by male turned to the descriptions of the lack of masculinity, or the flaunting of male power, or groaning with bitterness. Besides, the desire to vent, the memories of growth and even the detestation on the phenomenon of female being butchered had also been illustrated. Therefore an alternate inspection of the male poets’ views on female and vice versa would help to have a better understanding of gender concepts and the changing relationship between men and women in the last few decades of Chinese society. Apart from thinking of gender differences and sexual identities the Third Generation Poetry not only focused on the relationship between parents and their children, but also on the connotations of the traditional idea of reproduction and the infant imagery, and even on portraying the rare image of the ego of androgyny. In addition, The Third Generation poetry also presented abundant interlinked gender imagery, such as natural things and body, the darkness and death, the space and items etc., which had been created for the enrichment of the symbolic meanings and the aesthetic significance of the poems. In short, the social and cultural significance of various gender issues in line with the artistic techniques of the Third Generation Poetry had been scrutinized deeply in the chapters.

Resumen
Thesis (MEd (Education))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2016.
Gender roles for both men and women have changed considerebly during the past two decades. These changes were caused by the New Constitution of South Africa. Women are not limited anymore to certain careers or gender roles. They can live life to their full potential as individuals. The youth are still in a variable state and are influenced by what they read. Youth literature plays a huge role in the construction of gender identity. The way gender is portrayed in youth literature contributes to the view children develop of their own gender. Gender stereotyping, sexism and sexist language in texts could be interpreted as correct and acceptable if teachers are not aware of it and do not point these out. This study was conducted to determine if Afrikaans youth literature changed in accordance to society’s views of gender roles and how youth literature plays a role in the construction of gender. For this study award-winning youth books with a female main character were chosen and were subjected to Critical Discourse Analysis. Critical Discourse Analysis exposes hidden power structures and looks critically at the language used to construct female charaters as well as who the focalizer is and how the focalizer describes the female characters. Research findings showed that there are positive changes in Afrikaans youth literature. Writers are creating stronger female characters for the youth. Research findings also show that certain stereotypes are too deeply rooted and will take more time to change. That is why it is important for the teacher in the classroom to be aware of the hidden power structures and stereotypes in youth literature and to point it out in order to teach in a more gender-sensitive way.

Resumen
This collection of short stories explores themes of contemporary gender performance through the lens of the fairy tale. The stories examine both the reverberations canonical tales continue to have in American society today, and the new iterations of fairly tales we encounter in modern culture, particularly those which we burden young women through film and television. Within the collection of stylistic conceits and narrative concerns specific to the fairy tale, these stories feature isolated narrators and themes of journeying through the forest. Each of these tales presents a female character or characters going into a metaphorical woods; the stories also often invoke the literal woods. The idea of "the handsome prince" figures here as well, in different explorations (most often lampoons) of contemporary masculinity. Many of these stories also foreground the particular dynamics and complexities of relationships between women: friends, rivals, lovers, teachers and students, mothers and daughters.

Roth, Jenny. "Law, gender and culture : representations of the female legal subject in selected Jacobean texts". Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/14658.

Texto completo
Resumen
This thesis addresses some of the extant gaps in law and literature criticism using an historical cultural criticism of law and literature that focuses on the Jacobean female legal subject in cases of divorce and adultery. It examines the intellectual milieu that constructs law and literature in this period to contribute to research on female subject formation, and looks specifically at how literature and law work to construct identity. This thesis asks what views Jacobean literature presents of the female legal subject, and what do those views reveal about identity and gender construction? Chapter one offers some essential historical contexts. It establishes the jurisprudential conditions of the period, defines the ideal female legal subject, touches on recent historical scholarship regarding women and law, explores how literature reveals law's artificiality, and links the Inns of Court to the theatres. Chapter two focuses on women and divorce. The first sections discuss the theology and ideology which impacted on divorce law. The latter sections examine Elizabeth Cary's Tragedy of Mariam, ca. 1609, and two manuscript accounts of Frances Howard's 1613 divorce trial, William Terracae's poem, A Plenarie Satisfaction, ca. 1613, and The True Tragi-Comedie Formarly Acted at Court, a play by Francis Osborne, 1635. These texts reveal the legal construction and frustrations of married women, and illustrate a gendered divide in attitudes towards women's legal position. Chapter three examines women and adultery law. It then juxtaposes representations of women justly accused of adultery, like the real-life Alice Clarke, and the fictional Isabella in John Marston's The Insatiate Countess, 1613, and unjustly accused, like the virtuous wives in Marston's play. This chapter reveals how male anxiety creates the stereotypes that constrain the female legal subject within systems of patrilineal inheritance. As a whole, this thesis uses literature to explore the Jacobean female legal subject's relationship to her husband and to the law, and, in some cases, it challenges the assumption that women were effectively constrained by legal dictates which would keep them chaste, silent and submissive. Literature, in some cases, works alongside law to sustain constructed identities, but radical literature can undermine law by challenging the stereotypes and identities law works to maintain.

Resumen
In this study I hope to clarify some misconceptions about the female characters which appear in the novels of Miguel de Unamuno. The female agonista follows a slightly different pattern than does the male. Unamuno always includes evidence of social limitations which hinder the female agonista's quest for perpetuation. While she may be as ambitious, egoistic and wilfull as her male counterpart, this does not always ensure success. She must also defy conventional thinking in order to achieve her goals. By studying the agonistas and some of the secondary female characters, I hope to prove that Unamuno's characterization of women is deliberate. The two contrasting types, secondary characters and agonistas, are extremes and should be read as such. The repeated inclusion in the narrative of the female social condition indicates that Unamuno is aware of and concerned by gender distinction. The fact that his agonistas, who challenge convention, are granted conditional success is proof that Unamuno validates their attempts.

Resumen
Maria Messina (1887-1944) is one of the writers whose work has been "rediscovered" as a result of the recent interest in women writers of the past. Until now, criticism has tended to focus on her representation of the female condition. This thesis attempts to offer a more precise and yet more broadly contextualized characterization of her work. The analysis takes into account the social and economic upheavals of the early decades of this century which affected both men and women. In fact, the crisis of the rigid division of gender roles is shown to be the real thematic source of her work.

Resumen
This thesis is contained within the frame of a plot diagram, since it is a story about telling stories about stories. The conflict was initiated when it struck me that I had been living unawares inside a contradiction: I called myself a feminist, yet I loved and promoted the "Great Works of Western Literature", a canon reflecting patriarchal metanarratives. This conflict shaped the question, "What does it mean to say that we are gendered by what and how we read as girls?" I looked for clues by re-searching my graduate coursework, amongst the discourses of critical pedagogy, postmodernism, interpretive inquiry, and feminist literary criticism. Translating theory into rising action, I adopted as my approach the memory-work techniques described in Female Sexualization (1987), an exemplary work of feminist research. I formed the BookMarks Collective, comprising an affinity group of six women, including me, who met and responded to the question for five months by writing, critiquing, and rewriting memory-stories about their girlhood reading. The experience of collectivity itself became the story's climax: together we opened the door to a world we would not have discovered alone or lived theoretically. Together we brought to life the belief that change in ourselves preceeds pedagogic change, our conversations having sparked insights about our beliefs and practice that none had come to on her own. Together, we re-read "gendering" as a process within a complex and contradictory constructed reality in which we both act and are acted upon. Together, we recognized the power of collective consciousness-raising to enable us to re-view the textual meanings of our lifestories, allowing us to become conscious agents in their ongoing construction.

Resumen
This thesis explores how both texts - The Da Vinci Code and The Mists of Avalon - write femininity onto the Holy Grail in seemingly problematic ways, and the way in which women's voices, through the feminization of the Grail, are often silenced.
