Stinson, Felicia Ann. "Giving setting character : identity and place in American Southern literature". Thesis, Kingston University, 2015. http://eprints.kingston.ac.uk/35840/.

Texto completo
Resumen
In an effort to address and to rectify the overabundance of stereotype in regional literature of the American South, this dissertation seeks to recontextualize the traditional markers and the use of sense of place to determine setting. Instead, the thesis emphasizes and explores how relationships of identity through attitudes of dysfunction and obsession can give place or land agency within a narrative, thus reinvigorating the value and authenticity of the regional narrative beyond common and expected patterns. This is exemplified and analyzed in close readings of contemporary Southern writers who defy the traditional narrative, e.g. Jesmyn Ward, Benh Zeitlin, and Karen Russell, as well as canonical authors whose success can be seen in the appearance of these attitudes and development of identity for place, e.g. William Faulkner and Margaret Mitchell. The accompanying novel excerpts serve to highlight even further the execution and power of this literary form for a post-millennium Southern Literature, which can evade its growing presence as a genre literature and regains its position as a figurehead for the significance of regional writing.

Skinner, Rachel Davidson. "Nísia Floresta: Setting a Foundation for Feminist Literature in Brazil". BYU ScholarsArchive, 2013. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/3905.

Resumen
Many historians and literary critics recognize the nineteenth-century Brazilian author, Nísia Floresta, as the first feminist in Brazil. "Nísia Floresta é considerada a precursora dos ideais feministas no Brasil. Desde o início de sua carreira literária, a defesa dos direitos femininos foi o tema mais recorrente em sua obra"(Castro 250). Her works, published in Brazil and also in France and Italy, influenced women across borders. This thesis will address the discourse on maternity and education found in her works Opúsculo humanitário, Direitos das mulheres e injustiças dos homens, A mulher, and Conselhos à minha filha. Focusing on gender equality and the position of women in society, Floresta's writings appeared in newspapers, pamphlets and books in the early nineteenth century. Contemporary scholars have given her the title of feminist though Floresta never called herself that, for she offered intriguing support for women's stereotypical role as mothers, as well as addressing the liberal notion of women's education. Floresta's publications are of great value due to the scarcity of women writers during her time and because she offers a rare feminine perspective on society both in Brazil and in Europe.

McGuire, Nancy Kathleen. "Inpatient suicide in the general medical setting: an integrative literature review". Montana State University, 2011. http://etd.lib.montana.edu/etd/2011/mcguire/McGuireN1211.pdf.

Texto completo
Resumen
As many as 69% of individuals who kill themselves visit the Emergency Department (ED) for reasons unrelated to suicide and more than one in ten completed suicides are by individuals who were seen in an ED within two months of dying. Most were not screened for suicide risk (Knesper, 2010). Although 52% of inpatient suicides occur in psychiatric settings, focusing attention on these suicides while ignoring the 48% of suicides occurring in the general hospital units is not addressing the whole of the problem. This review centered around literature pertaining to inpatient suicide in the general hospital setting with a focus on the medical-surgical and emergency departments. Data base search terms selected were "inpatient," "suicide," "impatient suicide emergency department," and "inpatient suicide medical-surgical." Twenty-one articles met the inclusion criteria (i.e., the research was done using adults in the general hospital setting, published after January 1, 2006 in the United States, written in English and was peer reviewed) and six were identified as empirical evidence. These articles were reviewed to evaluate the methodology and clinical application, compared and contrasted for similarities and differences, and patterns and themes were identified and described. After review, these studies demonstrated that nurses can play a key role in reducing suicide rates by identifying patient risk, taking appropriate action, creating a safe environment and empowering nurses to assess, make decisions and follow-up and mandatory reporting. It is clear from the literature surveyed that more research regarding inpatient suicide is a critical need.

Linebaugh, Kelly Bartlett. "A Systematic Literature Review of Healing Environments in the Inpatient Healthcare Setting". Diss., The University of Arizona, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/301768.

Texto completo
Resumen
Background: Health care settings are generally regarded as stress inducing environments. Stress can alter the immune response, impair wound healing and create a greater risk for asthma, diabetes, gastrointestinal disorder and myocardial infarction. Beginning in the 1980s and 1990s, there has been increasing interest in healing environments and evidence-based design concepts. Yet, there has been little progress developing healing environments and using evidence-based design for psychiatric inpatient units, a uniquely stressful environment. Psychiatric units today continue to use designs such as caged in outdoor patio areas that resemble facilities that incarcerate rather than facilities which reduce stress and facilitate healing. The purpose of this systematic literature review was to identify design features that are evidence-based which can be used to create an optimal inpatient psychiatric patient room by: (1) analyzing the research literature for evidence of architectural and design elements that could be used in the inpatient psychiatric care setting to reduce stress and improve the well-being; (2) identifying design elements that are consistent with accreditation and licensing standards for inpatient psychiatric units; and (3) designing a psychiatric inpatient room that has evidence-based elements to reduce stress and improve well-being. Methods: A systematic literature review was conducted to identify factors in the inpatient healthcare environment that support an optimal healing environment. The PICO question for this review was what design factors in the inpatient healthcare environment support an optimal healing environment? A search of five databases and a hand search of reference lists were conducted. The search included studies from 1980 to the present, original research conducted on inpatient units with adult patients that investigated an intervention with an outcome that promotes a healing environment. Experimental, quasi-experimental, non-experimental, systematic literature reviews and expert opinions were sought and evaluated using a scale to analyze scientific rigor and research quality. Results: A total of 6,874 articles were identified in the search. Seventy-six articles were eligible for full text screening. After review of the full text, 38 articles were determined to be eligible for evidence analysis. After removing 11 inadmissible articles due to poor quality, 27 articles were included in the final synthesis. The search found research on eight hospital design features which may support optimal healing environments: artwork (n = 7), building configuration (n = 2), finish materials (n = 7), interior details (n = 6), lighting (n = 11), nature and view (n = 8), noise (n = 10), room configuration (n = 6). More than 50% of the research on optimal healing environments used quasi-experimental and non-experimental designs with rare use of experimental research designs. Overall, the quality of the research on optimal healing environments is not high, but results were reasonably consistent across studies. Conclusions: Evidence suggests seven design features for healing inpatient psychiatric environments, including: (a) single rooms, (b) calm, naturalistic and domestic artwork or photographs, (c) east facing windows, (d) plants, (e) acoustic ceiling tiles, (f) patient rooms removed from noise producing unit areas and (g) a window view of nature. These seven recommendations were examined for consistency with existing Arizona statutes and industry standards for behavioral health care environments. Recommendations found to be inconsistent with these statutes and standards were modified to reach congruency with the statutes and guidelines, and then an evidence-based design of a psychiatric inpatient room design was formulated and is illustrated. Future research on interventions to create healing environments at the greatest scientific rigor is needed along with measurement techniques to quantify stress responses to the environment.

Hudson, Sonia A. "Systematic Literature Review on Fall Prevention in an Acute Care Hospital Setting". ScholarWorks, 2020. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/7874.

Texto completo
Resumen
Falls, with and without injury, in acute care hospitals are quite common but can be prevented if appropriate interventions are in place to address this issue. It is imperative that nurses assess fall risks of all patients admitted to the hospital and advocate for appropriate interventions to prevent falls in those who are found to be at risk. The purpose of this project was to recommend changes to the current fall prevention protocol in the project facility, an acute care hospital, based on best practices identified in a systematic review of the literature. At the time of the project, the hospital had a high rate of falls. The clinical practice question addressed by this project focused on the evidence-based fall prevention interventions that have resulted in a decreased fall rate among patients on medical-surgical units in an acute inpatient hospital setting. This doctoral project was informed by Kolcaba's theory of caring, and the major source of evidence was a systematic review of the literature focusing on fall prevention. Findings indicated that identification of fall risk factors and implementation of multifactorial fall prevention interventions, such as fall prevention teams, unit fall team champions and use of a fall risk scale, can reduce falls on medical surgical units in acute care hospitals. It was recommended that a multidisciplinary fall prevention team be developed in conjunction with unit fall team champions and that a fall risk scale be used to bridge the practice gap. If implemented, these changes may benefit patients, nurses, and the organization as a whole through decreased falls, lengths of stay, and health care costs.

Resumen
Over the past 4 and a half years, I have studied contemporary art and seen countless artworks being made in an academic setting. In doing so, I have come to the realization that religious content is rare in today’s time. While it is not actively discouraged, the environment I am in and the current art community does not seem to be particularly interested in merging the two concepts. Without understanding why, I subconsciously kept art and my faith as separate entities for the first few years of my higher education. But as I matured and developed my own artwork, I began to feel as though my identity and my interests should be rooted in my relationship with God. Upon this reflection, I began looking for ways to make Christian art in a contemporary setting that could also be accepted by those who do not share my faith.

Resumen
The correspondence and antagonisms between writing and looking and fiction and painting were continually being explored by James, and this thesis continues that exploration, but with a view to seeing how the analogies collapse, writing and seeing often becoming interchangeable activities. This thesis is concerned with visual anxiety, the circulation of textuality and the construction of female identity in James, and, by extension, it also discusses the anxiety or 'blindness' of James's readers. My argument draws heavily on both the theory of the visual and anamorphosis discussed in Jacques Lacan's seminar 'Of the Gaze as Object Petit a' and on Hans Holbein's anamorphic picture, The Ambassadors. The challenge to seeing and identity that the anamorphic object raises I relate to the difficulties and anxieties posed by the challenge of writing for James and to the difficulties and anxieties experienced by the threat of reading James. Starting from the descriptions of writing and seeing in James's notebooks, I draw on a wide range of his work, including the late novels and some of the lesser known and unfinished fictions, but focussing on the ghost stories, the plays and theatre writings, and the paradox surrounding the commercial success of film versions of the 'repudiated' early novels, The Europeans and The Bostonians. The plethora of visual images and scenarios that emerge in Jamesian moments of crisis, either in the terror of planning his fiction in the notebooks, or in the horror felt when a character in the fiction is confronted by a sight that deeply shocks and excludes him or her, suggest a relation between the fear of seeing and the fear of writing that I analyse through Freud's descriptions of visual blocks: the primal scene, castration and fetishism. For Freud, from these climactic moments of delayed and displaced sight will emerge the direction and development of sexuality, subjectivity and visual pleasure, and these psychic scenarios are no less dense than the visual scenes that precede and preoccupy James's writing. But where psychoanalysis can provide an account of many anxieties, associations and visual seductions, it leaves the connection between anxiety, writing and vision unexplored. I try to examine, through a reading of Freud's case histories and thoughts on heredity, sexuality, error, chance and telepathy, why he is particularly silent on this problem and how a recognition of the relations between visual and writing 'blocks' can offer a way of reading James.

Bullock, Kurt E. "Narrative space and time : the rhetoric of disruption in the short-story form". Virtual Press, 2001. http://liblink.bsu.edu/uhtbin/catkey/1213154.

Texto completo
Resumen
This study traces spatial and temporal disturbances in the modem short story structure. Edgar Allan Poe's "indefinitiveness" and Kenneth Burke's "actualization" serve as historical foundations for this investigation, which leads to contemporary frameworks proposed by such theorists as Gerard Genette, Umberto Eco, Wolfgang Iser, Paul Ricoeur, Peter Brooks, James Phelan, and Susan Sniader Lanser. In particular, I explore how effect operates as a predominant concern of short fiction. Short fiction is a rhetorical interaction encumbered by spatial and temporal constraints, and its narrative teleology is necessarily disrupted by rhetorical techniques. Narrative's boundaries are purposefully violated, its tempo twisted and contorted, exposing a purposeful tension in the rhetorical engagement of author, text and reader. Instabilities crafted within the text disrupt time-space expectations of readers.Importantly, effect is perceived as a rhetorical device within short fiction, and so in this study the text serves as a site of transference privileging equally writer and reader. Conditions of possibility and understanding are invested in the text by the author through techniques of spatial disruption and temporal discontinuity, and then reinvested in the reader by the narrative through the text's generation of uncertainty. Short fiction serves as an invitation by the author for the reader to construct explanations; devices work to disrupt the time-space constraints of the genre, establishing as they do a narrative contract between author and reader that is resolved in and from the text.Burke considers this to be shaping prose fiction to the author's purposes, an act which "involves desires and their appeasements" - and one which purposefully aims for a particular effect. But what are the limits of purposefulness in short fiction? I examine both textual effect and reader affect, relying particularly on Iser and Eco, and turn to Brooks in conclusion to summarize the role of desire in and from the text, and to Phelan to critique the place of rhetoric in establishing and maintaining that desire. My analysis discloses that time-space disruption, employed as a rhetorical strategy by short story writers, serves to heighten rather than threaten the mediated engagement of writer/text/reader in short fiction, producing a measured effect.

Resumen
Background: Inclusion is a term that stands for fully including untypically developed chil- dren in regular educational setting. It should be implemented in all of the present educa- tional settings. However, the definition of inclusion and the way of implementing it differs from countries and cultures, which makes it a problem for having a united view on it. More- over, there are different factors that can occur and have an impact of understanding the term. Aim: The aim of this study is to review the existing literature on the perception of inclu- siveness and the term ˝inclusion˝ from preschool teacher’s perspective in preschool settings in Europe and the different factors that have effect on the perceiving. Method: A literature search on the databases of ERIC and PsycINFO and a hand search on the reference lists of the relevant articles was conducted. The articles that are included were recent peer reviewed studies published in English, reporting perception of inclusion and factors that affect it. Results: In the seven studies that have been included, preschool teachers have overall pos- itive attitude towards inclusion. They reported the inclusion is important to be implemented in preschool settings. However, most of them reported that the implementation of the in- clusion is needed, they do not feel secure enough and eligible to do it in a correct way. Furthermore, group of factors that affect the perception of inclusion and implementation of it occurred. The factors that occurred are lack of resources, no complete education and different understanding of what inclusion stand for and what should the implementation be alike. Conclusion: Considering the importance of inclusion as an ongoing process in preschools, education of professional staff for it is a first step in order to implement inclusion. Moreover, making the strong basis in preschool for inclusion will give the staff the confidence and eligible knowledge to provide the inclusive education for every participant of the environ-ment.

This collection of essays includes a preference that investigates the role and importance of setting and character in a nonfiction narrative. The preface assesses the writings of four great authors, examining how each author use setting and characterization to further the purpose of their story. This collection focuses on four different issues that the author has wrestled with for two decades. While “Desperado” is an investigation into the problems within her own family, “Being Black Me” highlights the authors struggle against the racial inequality her hometown. “Voices In The Dark”, the author analyze how the abuse she suffered as a child has influenced her life and contributed to a drinking problem that is explored in a later essay “Alors On Danse”.

Green, Brian. "Penned in the first person : setting and theme in the lyrics of Thomas Hardy". Doctoral thesis, University of Cape Town, 1990. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/21810.

Resumen
Bibliography: pages 240-258.
This thesis arises from the conviction that the Hardyan quality of mind, a mind at once tentative and courageous, is of supreme importance in our time and is most distinctly and decisively present in Hardy's short poems. The chief aim of this thesis has been to offer students of Hardy thematic and aesthetic guidelines for reading his poems so as to encounter that quality of mind first-hand. In order to develop those guidelines, I have rooted them in primary materials and biographical details germane to demonstrating Hardy's achievement as a poet. The main title of this thesis, for instance, is meant to emphasise the complex relationship between the poet and the man: culled from the preface of his third volume of verse, Time's Laughingstocks and Other Verses, the simple yet apposite phrase, "penned in the first person," is the invention of Hardy himself.

Naguib, Assmaa Mohamed. "Representations of 'home' from the setting of 'exile' : novels by Arab migrant writers". Thesis, University of Exeter, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10036/3839.

Texto completo
Resumen
The attempt to come to terms with the meaning of home, both literally and metaphorically, has become a major concern in literary studies. This dissertation explores the various novelistic representations of home from the point of view of Arab migrant novelists. Home, which contains various references to architectural structures, nations, states, or belonging, can no longer be thought of as a generalized or unified experience. For the migrant writer, the concept of home takes shape as a result of interaction between the past and the present, with memory playing a powerful role. It is created as a result of various forces in tension that include personal and national experiences, the context within which migration from the traditional home place occurred, ideological allegiances and identity politics. I argue through my exploration of a number of novels written by Arab writers who migrated from their home countries that the concept of home can no longer be referred to as a generalized, definite or a fixed notion. Given the different circumstances of the movement from one country to another, even among nationals of the same country, what are the themes that will be stressed in an Arab writer’s imagination and portrayal of home? Will writers stress the exclusions of exile, and define their presence away from the original country clearly as ‘exile’, fixating on painful nostalgia? How does memory influence the perception of home? Will those writers who have lived a long time in a new ‘foreign’ country emphasize the adaptations in the diaspora and the privileges of migration? Will they offer critiques of the national project, making a clear distinction between the personal home and the national project? Will such boundaries be as clearly defined for all the writers? Those questions guide my investigation into the representation of home in the novels of Palestinian, Lebanese and Iraqi writers living away from their three countries of origin. This investigation takes place within the postcolonial theoretical framework of the implications of the site of migration about the revision of the centrality of the nation as a referent of identity. The analysis uncovers a variety of illustrations in the imagination of home and the portrayal of the national experience in the novels. The analysis also highlights the inextricable link between the personal experience and the political experience, whereby the ideological stance on issues of nation and nationalism cannot be easily isolated in an assessment of the cultural product at the site of migration.

The embryonic ideas for this thesis began to form in two seminars I attended in 2000 while studying for a Masters at the University of Chicago. The first of these, W. J. T. Mitchell's 'Verbal and Visual Landscapes', must be given credit for introducing me to a short essay by Martin Heidegger entitled 'Die Kunst und der Raum' ('Art and Space'), which got me thinking about the 'special character' of space (Heidegger 1973: 4). In addition, Professor Mitchell's specific approach to landscape, that it should be considered as a verb rather than a noun, made me consider the ontological implications of the relationship between space and power that is witnessed both in and through landscape when approached as 'a process by which social and subjective identities are formed' (Mitchell 1994: 1).

Davies, Michael Howard. "'Fierabras' in Ireland : the transmission and cultural setting of a French epic in the medieval Irish literary tradition". Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 1995. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/8164.

Texto completo
Resumen
Thirteenth-century France saw the construction of the Sainte-Chapelle in Paris to house the Crown of Thorns and other Relics of the Passion which had been purchased by King Louis IX. As a result, a fictitious history that explained how Charlemagne had rescued these Relics from the Saracens and brought them to Paris gained widespread popularity in later medieval France. This history was in the form of an epic poem entitled the Chanson de Fierabras, of which English translations were also made. The history was, in addition, taken to Ireland, where the Irish translation, Sdair Fortibrais developed a wide circulation. However, the Irish text had as its source a Latin translation of the French epic poem. This Latin text is preserved only partially in a unique Irish manuscript of the fifteenth century. It is assumed to be the work of an Irish cleric due to the non-appearance of this version of the story outside Ireland. Hitherto unedited, the principal aim of this project is to provide an edition of the Latin text that lies between the French epic and the Irish text, and then to discuss the position of the story in the Irish literary tradition. The first part of this thesis is entitled 'The Irish Fierabras- the Historical and Literary Framework', divided into five chapters. The first chapter asks why a certain selection of literary texts were translated into Irish during the later Middle Ages, and how they were representing the literary tastes of contemporary France. A comparison is then made with the translation literature of English, Welsh and Old Norse, leading to the conclusion that the history of the Relics of the Passion was the major reason for the interest in the Fierabras story in Ireland as in England. The second chapter outlines the spread of the Fierabras story in France, England and Ireland from the thirteenth to the fifteenth century, noting any political reasons as to why the story may have been popular at any one time. The third chapter considers how the subjects of the Fierabras story were used elsewhere in the Irish tradition in order to see if any political interpretations may be applied. The results are inconclusive. The fourth chapter demonstrates that the Irish text is a close translation of the Latin, which is itself an economical translation of the French poem. The final chapter notes how the Latin text can be considered a scholastic text of the early fourteenth century, and asks if it was the work of one particular author, by comparison with another datable text. The second part, 'Manuscript, Text and Translation', is centred upon the edition of the Latin text. The edition presents the text as it is written in the manuscript, with appropriate emendations - an 'editio princeps'. The title of the text in the manuscript, Gesta Karoli Magni, is preserved. The edition is prefaced by a description of the manuscript, along with the editorial principles. It is noted how the text is preserved on one quire that would probably have been followed by a similar quire, now lost. The edition is followed by a textual apparatus, in which the editorial corrections are explained, and some further notes. A reasonably literal translation lies at the end, in which the difficulties in the Latin text are clarified as far as possible.

Resumen
This descriptive socio-linguistic study examines second grade children's biliteracy development in a private school in Buenos Aires, where English is taught as a foreign language. It describes a bilingual setting in Argentina and determines how these second graders are becoming biliterate. The major findings of the study are: (1) Students are learning English as a foreign language, not as a second language. (2) The model of language learning influenced the children's perceptions of themselves as language learners, readers and writers. (3) Students frequently transferred and applied literacy in the first language (Spanish) to foreign language literacy (English). (4) In order to read and write in a language, a person doesn't have to be orally fluent in it. (5) Learning is a socially constructed process.

Moehrke-Rasul, Diana. "Intercultural learning as lived experiences : a pedagogic exploration among international students and staff in a UK tertiary education setting". Thesis, Kingston University, 2015. http://eprints.kingston.ac.uk/35411/.

Texto completo
Resumen
Intercultural learning in UK tertiary education is largely operationalised as a universal or implied term. The focus generally is on the internationalisation of the curriculum, which has mainly developed in response to the recruitment drive of international students to local campuses over the last two decades. Within this market-centric context, a stronger educational rationale has been advocated, which in recent years has promoted a ‘pedagogy of recognition’ (Caruana and Spurling, 2007, p. 66), rejecting international students’ automatic assimilation to the prevalent socio-academic culture. Although international students are regarded as ‘a resource for learning’ in this context (Ryan, 2011, p. 633), a praxis grounding of how to facilitate this ostensibly more progressive approach is not readily apparent. In this research project with international students and staff at my former workplace, a private tertiary education college in London, I investigated in what ways cultural diversity is understood and interpreted pedagogically. The research aim was to explore what constitutes lived experiences of intercultural learning, in order to inform my praxis choices with regard to a pedagogy of recognition. A bricolage approach, comprising critical pedagogic theory and hermeneutic phenomenological methodology, was adopted to facilitate the project embedded within this distinct socio-economic educational context, further involving 52 online questionnaires and 38 semi-structured interviews with international students and staff of the college during summer 2013. The research contributes to current internationalisation discourse by proffering a theory/practice understanding of a pedagogy of recognition with regard to fostering intercultural learning. It identifies the importance of including an embodied dimension in pedagogic praxis, whereby intercultural learning among participants is approached with reference to a safety/risk axis. Specifically, it suggests alerting students to learning opportunities that might be realised from intercultural interactions without predetermining these, considering that intercultural learning is always more complex than teachers’ rationales and deeply ingrained in students’ own life projects and the wider political arena. Consequently, I argue that possibilities for human creativity among learners, rather than mere celebration of cultural diversity or assumed shared outcomes, become available.

Resumen
Approximately 5 to 14% of school age children are affected by mathematics learning disabilities. With the implementation of inclusion, many of these children are now being educated in the regular education class- room setting and may require additional support to be successful in algebra. Therefore, teachers need to know what interventions are available to them to facilitate the algebraic learning of students with mathemat- ics learning disabilities. This systematic literature review aims to identify, and critically analyze, interventions that could be used when teaching algebra to these students. The five included articles focused on interven- tions that can be used in algebra, specifically when solving equations. In the analysis of the five studies two types of interventions emerged: the concrete-representational-abstract model and graphic organizers. The concrete-representational-abstract model seems to show it can be used successfully in a variety of scenarios involving solving equations. The use of graphic organizers also seems to be helpful when teaching higher- level algebra content that may be difficult to represent concretely. This review discovered many practical implications for teachers. Namely, that the concrete-representational-abstract model of intervention is easy to implement, effective over short periods of time and appears to positively influence the achievement of all students in an inclusive classroom setting. The graphic organizer showed similar results in that it is easy to implement and appears to improve all students’ learning. This review provided a good starting point for teachers to identify interventions that could be useful in algebra; however, more research still needs to be done. Future research is suggested in inclusive classroom settings where the general education teacher is the instructor and also on higher-level algebra concepts.

Resumen
This study was designed to identify correlates of success in Supported Employment(SE) programs for persons with psychiatric disabilities. Indiana policy-makers are seriously considering a managed care, or "capitated," system of payment to make SE provider programs more efficient economically. However, many agencies are concerned about providing services to more severely impaired individuals because of the potentially higher costs of serving these individuals. Two studies are included in this project. The goals of the first study were to identify SE consumer (clinical) characteristics that predict (1) successful outcomes, defined as whether the consumer achieves gainful work, and (2) program costs, defined as the amounts of SE service hours utilized by consumers who obtain work. In two large samples of SE consumers with serious mental illness, no clinical characteristics (e.g., diagnosis, rated functioning, hospitalization history) were associated with vocational outcome or service costs. The goal of the second study was to describe the types and amounts of services utilized by SE consumers who obtain work. Specific service categories associated with obtaining work were travel, training, and advocacy that was unrelated to the consumer's job. The implications of these findings are discussed in the framework of the debate over clinical versus empirical prediction. The need for a theoretical model of SE services that allows the use of predictive clinical and consumer driven services is also discussed.

Resumen
In Sweden, turnover among healthcare professionals is a significant problem in hospital settings. Efficient leadership of healthcare professionals is vital for enhancing the quality and integration of healthcare. Authentic leadership (AL) is a relational leadership style instigated from the field of positive organizational conduct and is asserted to advocate healthy work environments that impact healthcare professional’s efficiency and positive organizational outcomes. This master’s thesis aims to describe the impact of AL on the work environment and patient outcomes in hospital settings. The method is a literature study. Peer-reviewed English or Swedish articles that examined the impact of AL on the work environment and patient outcomes in hospital settings were selected from seven databases. Quality appraisal, data extraction, and analysis were accomplished on the included studies. A total of 26 articles (n=24 quantitative, n=1 qualitative and n=1 mixed method) satisfied the inclusion criteria. Results were evaluated according to the literature review content analysis. Findings support positive relationships between AL and increased optimism and trust among healthcare professionals, job satisfaction and turnover, patient care quality, structural empowerment, and work engagement. Findings were, therefore, consistent with AL theory. Future studies using more diversity in research themes, settings, study populations, organizations, job areas, geographic origins, and theory context are merited. People in positions of influence in healthcare settings and healthcare practitioners can use the findings of this study as a guide to increase awareness of the processes by which AL promotes positive outcomes in the workplace.

Resumen
Through his use of "foundation" and "house" metaphors in his "First Sermon Preached to King Charles at St. James, 3 April 1625," John Donne discreetly presents his ideologies and principles before the new king, while simultaneously criticizing his contemporaries' misguided bickering over religio-political factions. This essay seeks to unpack the history surrounding, as well as the casuistical logic found within Donne's first sermon preached during the Caroline period, which both explicitly and implicitly addresses the foremost anxieties of the people of the changing age.

Hopkins, Mark E. "A Study of Physicians' Serendipitous Knowledge Discovery: An Evaluation of Spark and the IF-SKD Model in a Clinical Setting". Thesis, University of North Texas, 2018. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc1157586/.

Texto completo
Resumen
This research study is conducted to test Workman, Fiszman, Rindflesch and Nahl's information flow-serendipitous knowledge discovery (IF-SKD) model of information behavior, in a clinical care context. To date, there have been few attempts to model the serendipitous knowledge discovery of physicians. Due to the growth and complexity of the biomedical literature, as well as the increasingly specialized nature of medicine, there is a need for advanced systems that can quickly present information and assist physicians to discover new knowledge. The National Library of Medicine's (NLM) Lister Hill Center for Biocommunication's Semantic MEDLINE project is focused on identifying and visualizing semantic relationships in the biomedical literature to support knowledge discovery. This project led to the development of a new information discovery system, Spark. The aim of Spark is to promote serendipitous knowledge discovery by assisting users in maximizing the use of their conceptual short-term memory to iteratively search for, engage, clarify and evaluate information presented from the biomedical literature. Using Spark, this study analyzes the IF- SKD model by capturing and analyzing physician feedback. The McCay-Peet, Toms and Kelloway's Perception of Serendipity and Serendipitous Digital Environment (SDE) questionnaires are used. Results are evaluated to determine whether Spark contributes to physicians' serendipitous knowledge discovery and the ability of the IF-SKD ability to capture physicians' information behavior in a clinical setting.

Texto completo
Resumen
In the years immediately following the Second World War, the main part of Latvian literature was produced by writers living outside Latvia. To this day Latvian literature continues to be written outside Latvia, albeit to a much smaller extent. This study examines those Latvian novels, written outside Latvia after the Second World War, which depict the realities of the early years of exile. The aim of the study is to describe the image of the world of exile as depicted in these novels. Borrowing from Bakhtin's concept of the chronotope, images relating to time and space in these novels are examined in order to discern a mental topography of exile common to all these novels - a chronotope of exile. The novels are read as part of a collective narrative, produced by a particular social group in unordinary historical circumstances. The novels are regarded as this social group’s common perception of its own experience of this historical reality. The early years of exile fall into two distinct periods: first, the period of flight from Latvia and life in and around the Displaced Persons camps of postwar Germany; second, the early years of settling in a new country of residence after emigration from Germany. A model of the perceived world is constructed in order to compare these two periods, as well as their divergence from a standard perception of oneself in the world. This model consists of various time-spaces radiating concentrically out from the individual – ranging from the physically and psychologically near-lying time-spaces of one’s personal and intimate life, through everyday social time-spaces, as well as formal societal time-spaces, to the more distant abstract and conceptual perceptions of one’s place in the universe. Basic human concepts such as home, family, work, intimate relationships, social administration, and most notably the homeland – Latvia – are plotted at various points within these models. Divergences between the models describing the perception of time and space in the two early periods of exile thus become apparent.

This research seeks analyze Dazai Osamu\'s spatial aesthetics and his literary style, which was used in his novel Setting Sun, besides to bring off essence of Japan Contemporary Culture, that was devastated in this country due to World War II. Another point of this study is the narrative aesthetics, where the writer expresses his poetic sensitiveness. This study is based on Dazai Osamu\'s autobiographic research, emphasizing a historical moment of Japan, which he witnessed and finished his writings despite of war; in his novel, Dazai aimed the language of: iconography survey, pictorial survey and metonymy language. This study will search for elements that fit in the literary genre named I Novel, as well as influences the writer suffered from European Naturalism and social movements in his literary carrier; Dazai analyzed the heredity and the influences of social means described in atmosphere of his work and the literary aesthetic (spatial) carried out in his narrative techniques. The study developed here points out western interference in Japanese literature, which can be noticed in the inter-textuality of literary works between west and east, that inter-act itself; therefore introduces a narrative related to spatial aesthetic in the Setting Sun which the writer describes the essence of human beings´nature such as: irrational feelings, the emotions, the day-dreams, the cheerfulness and disappointments, inherent in whole human beings, especially in the Japanese society in certain historical time after war.
