Resumen
Video streaming services represent a new generation of television (DTV), which have become an integral part of modern digital culture. With the development of Internet technologies and the spread of broadband access, video streaming has become a popular and convenient way to consume multimedia content. Unlike traditional television, video streaming services provide the user with the ability to choose content, watch it at a convenient time and on different devices, which leads to new challenges and opportunities in improving the quality of user experience (QoE). One of the key elements that determine the quality of a video streaming service is the operator's transmission equipment and platform servers. These components provide content streaming over the Internet and affect such parameters as download speed, data stream stability and playback quality. Efficient management and optimization of the transmission equipment and servers can reduce latency, improve video quality and provide smoother streaming of content to end users. This research project aims to analyze methods for improving QoE parameters for video streaming services to better understand how technologies, algorithms and strategies can be applied to optimise the user experience in this new type of digital content. By considering factors such as video quality, adaptive streaming, traffic management, and many others, we aim to highlight key aspects that contribute to improving QoE and providing a more satisfactory user experience in video streaming services.

Resumen
By leveraging the development of mobile communication technologies and due to the increased capabilities of mobile devices, mobile multimedia services have gained prominence for supporting high-quality video streaming services. In vehicular ad-hoc networks (VANETs), high-quality video streaming services are focused on providing safety and infotainment applications to vehicles on the roads. Video streaming data require elastic and continuous video packet distributions to vehicles to present interactive real-time views of meaningful scenarios on the road. However, the high mobility of vehicles is one of the fundamental and important challenging issues for video streaming services in VANETs. Nevertheless, previous studies neither dealt with suitable data caching for supporting the mobility of vehicles nor provided appropriate seamless packet forwarding for ensuring the quality of service (QoS) and quality of experience (QoE) of real-time video streaming services. To address this problem, this paper proposes a video packet distribution scheme named Clone, which integrates vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure communications to disseminate video packets for video streaming services in VANETs. First, an indicator called current network quality information (CNQI) is defined to measure the feature of data forwarding of each node to its neighbor nodes in terms of data delivery ratio and delay. Based on the CNQI value of each node and the trajectory of the destination vehicle, access points called clones are selected to cache video data packets from data sources. Subsequently, packet distribution optimization is conducted to determine the number of video packets to cache in each clone. Finally, data delivery synchronization is established to support seamless streaming data delivery from a clone to the destination vehicle. The experimental results show that the proposed scheme achieves high-quality video streaming services in terms of QoS and QoE compared with existing schemes.

Resumen
Quality of Experience (QoE) of video streaming services has been attracting more and more attention recently. Therefore, in this work we designed and implemented a real-time QoE monitoring system for streaming services with Adaptive Media Playout (AMP), which was implemented into the VideoLAN Client (VLC) media player to dynamically adjust the playout rate of videos according to the buffer fullness of the client buffer. The QoE monitoring system reports the QoE of streaming services in real time so that network/content providers can monitor the qualities of their services and resolve troubles immediately whenever their subscribers encounter them. Several experiments including wired and wireless streaming were conducted to show the effectiveness of the implemented AMP and QoE monitoring system. Experimental results demonstrate that AMP significantly improves the QoE of streaming services according to the Mean Opinion Score (MOS) estimated by our developed program. Additionally, some challenging issues in wireless streaming have been easily identified using the developed QoE monitoring system.

Resumen
Video streaming is one of the killer applications in recent years. Video transcoding plays an important role in the video streaming service to cope with the various purposes. Specifically, content owners and publishers heavily utilize video transcoders to reconfigure source video in a variety of formats, video qualities, and bitrate to provide end users with the best possible quality of service. In this paper, we present VideoCoreCluster, a low-cost and energy-efficient transcoder cluster that is suitable for live streaming services. We designed and implemented real-time video transcoder cluster using cheap ($35), powerful, and energy-efficient Raspberry Pi. The quality of transcoded video provided by VideoCoreCluster is similar to the best software-based video transcoder while consuming significantly less energy (<3 W). We have proposed a scheduling algorithm based on priority of video stream and transcoding capacity. Our cluster manager provides reliable and scalable streaming services, because it uses the characteristics of adaptive bitrate scheme. We have deployed our transcoding cluster to provide IP-based TV streaming services on our university campus.

Resumen
AbstractThe technocultural disruption triggered by digitization has radically changed the way in which we consume films outside cinemas and transformed content providers’ business models. In Norway, between 2010 and 2016, DVD/Bluray and subscription-based streaming services switched places as major and minor platforms for home video consumption. Hence, home video consumption has migrated from a high-yielding platform at the head of the home video release cycle to a low-yielding platform at the tail end, where films also face tougher competition from drama series and international content tends to surpass local content. A case study of the earnings generated by local films released by a major distributor in this period suggests that home video revenues have diminished, making local films much more dependent on theatrical revenues and vulnerable to changes in cinema-going behaviour.

Resumen
This study examines the factors influencing early paid Over-The-Top (OTT) video streaming market growth in 50 countries. The results of the panel data analysis suggest that Netflix’s market entry, traditional pay TV market size, broadband infrastructure, and OTT platform competition contribute to the early market growth of paid OTT video streaming services, such as subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) services. The results also reveal that the traditional pay TV subscription market and the paid OTT video streaming market initially grow together in many countries. However, the findings also reveal a negative association between the market entry of Netflix and the subscription revenue growth rate of traditional pay TV services. The results of this study suggest industry and policy implications for paid OTT video streaming market growth and the sustainable development of the media industry.

Due to the growth of video traffic over the Internet in recent years, HTTP AdaptiveStreaming (HAS) solution becomes the most popular streaming technology because ithas been succesfully adopted by the different actors in Internet video ecosystem. Itallows the service providers to use traditional stateless web servers and mobile edgecaches for streaming videos. Further, it allows users to access media content frombehind Firewalls and NATs.In this thesis we focus on the design of a novel video streaming delivery solutioncalled Backward-Shifted Coding (BSC), a complementary solution to Dynamic AdaptiveStreaming over HTTP (DASH), the standard version of HAS. We first describe theBackward-Shifted Coding scheme architecture based on the multi-layer Scalable VideoCoding (SVC). We also discuss the implementation of BSC protocol in DASH environment. Then, we perform the analytical evaluation of the Backward-Sihifted Codingusing results from queueing theory. The analytical results show that BSC considerablydecreases the video playback interruption which is the worst event that users can experienceduring the video session. Therefore, we design bitrate adaptation algorithms inorder to enhance the Quality of Experience (QoE) of the users in DASH/BSC system. The results of the proposed adaptation algorithms show that the flexibility of BSC allowsus to improve both the video quality and the variations of the quality during thestreaming session. Finally, we propose new caching policies to be used with video contents encodedusing SVC. Indeed, in DASH/BSC system, cache servers are deployed to make contentsclosed to the users in order to reduce network latency and improve user-perceived experience. We use Linear Programming to obtain optimal static cache composition tocompare with the results of our proposed algorithms. We show that these algorithmsincrease the system overall hit ratio and offload the backhaul links by decreasing thefetched content from the origin web servers

Resumen
The user experience offered by a video streaming service plays a fundamental role in customer satisfaction. This experience can be degraded by poor playback quality and buffering issues. These problems can be caused by a user demand that is higher than the video streaming service capacity. Resource scaling methods can increase the available resources to cover the need. However, most resource scaling systems are reactive and scale up in an automated fashion when a certain demand threshold is exceeded. During popular live streaming content, the demand can be so high that even by scaling up at the last minute, the system might still be momentarily under-provisioned, resulting in a bad user experience. The solution to this problem is proactive scaling which is event-based, using content-related information to scale up or down, according to knowledge from past events. As a result, proactive resource scaling is a key factor in providing reliable video streaming services. Users viewing habits heavily affect demand. To provide an accurate model for proactive resource scaling tools, these habits need to be modelled. This thesis provides such a forecasting model for user views that can be used by a proactive resource scaling mechanism. This model is created by applying machine learning algorithms to data from both live TV and over-the-top streaming services. To produce a model with satisfactory accuracy, numerous data attributes were considered relating to users, content and content providers. The findings of this thesis show that user viewing demand can be modelled with high accuracy, without heavily relying on user-related attributes but instead by analysing past event logs and with knowledge of the schedule of the content provider, whether it is live tv or a video streaming service.

Driven by the increasing demand for multimedia services in broadband Internet networks, WIMAX technology has emerged as a competitive alternative to the wired broadband access solutions. The IEEE 802.16 is a solution that provides high throughput by ensuring a satisfactory QoS. In particular, it is suitable for multimedia applications that have strict QoS constraints. However, the users’ heterogeneity and diversity in terms of bandwidth, radio conditions and available resources, pose new deployment challenges. Indeed, multimedia applications need to interact with their environment to inform the access network about their QoS requirements and dynamically adapt to changing network conditions. In this context, we propose two solutions for video streaming over 802.16 networks based on Cross-Layer approach. We are interested in both unicast and multicast transmissions in uplink and downlink of one or more WIMAX cells.First, we proposed an architecture that enables Cross-Layer adaptation and optimization of video streaming based on available resources. We defined the entity CLO (Cross-Layer Optimizer) that takes benefits from service flow management messages, exchanged between BS and SS, at the MAC level, to determine the necessary adaptations / adjustment to ensure optimal delivery of the application. Adaptations occur at two epochs, during the admission of the video stream and during the streaming phase. The performance analysis, performed through simulations, shows the effectiveness of the CLO to adapt in a dynamic way, the video data rate depending on network conditions, and thus guarantee an optimal QoS.Second, we proposed a solution that enables IP multicast video delivery in WIMAX network. This solution allows finding the compromise between the diversity of end-user requirements, in terms of radio conditions, modulation schemes and available resources, along with the SVC hierarchy video format, to offer the best video quality even for users with low radio conditions. Indeed, we define a multicast architecture that allows each user to get a video quality proportionally to its radio conditions and its available bandwidth. Towards this end, several IP multicast groups are created depending on the SVC video layers. Subsequently, our solution allows optimizing the use of radio resources by exploiting the different modulations that can be selected by the end-users

In recent years, mobile devices have become more powerful in terms of computing power, memory, size and screen quality. These improvements have greatly stimulated demand for multimedia services including video streaming. Moreover, customers are increasingly demanding in terms of the quality rendered on this type of service. In addition, a bad experience of video streaming has a great impact on the perception that customers have of the operator. Optimizing the quality of experience (QoE) of customers on the services of video streaming is thus a major competitive challenge. In this thesis, we are interested in modeling and optimizing the QoE of the streaming services taking into account the usages and the mobility of the clients. In particular, we are interested in two strategies for delivering content on the mobile network: the Fast Caching strategy and the On-Off strategy. We develop analytical models that allow us to calculate major indicators of the QoE for the streaming service that are: i) starvation, which drives operators to send more video content to customers and ii) the loss due to abandoning the video playback, which pushes them to send video content in a strictly reasonable manner. An optimal balance is to be found. We also propose QoE oriented strategies by maintaining a good level of QoE over the entire network and optimizing the QoE indicators of streaming services

Resumen
Progressive download video services, such as YouTube, are responsible for a major part of the transmitted data volume in the Internet and it is expected, that they also will strongly affect mobile networks. Streaming video quality mainly depends on the sustainable throughput achieved during transmission. In order to achieve an acceptable video quality in mobile networks (with limited capacity resources), traffic engineering mechanisms have to be applied. For that, the streaming video quality needs to be measured and monitored permanently. Therefore, the video timestamps which are encoded within the payload of the TCP segments have to be extracted. For that it is necessary to decode the video within the transported payload. Algorithms for decoding Flash Video, MP4 and WebM Video have already been implemented as a demonstration implementation in support of the network based measurement contribution to SG12 by Chemnitz University for TCP encoded progressive download Internet services. In the demonstration, the derived play out buffering from the monitored traffic is being output internally. A second application is then used to graphically display the estimation result. The measurement and estimation is solely done within a measurement point of an operator network without access to the client’s end device.

Resumen

Video streaming has become ubiquitous and pervasive in usage of the electronic displaying devices. Streaming becomes more challenging when dealing with an enormous number of video streams. Particularly, the challenges lie in streaming types, video transcoding, video storing, and video delivering to users with high satisfaction and low cost for video streaming providers. In this dissertation, we address the challenges and issues encountered in video streaming and cloud-based video streaming. Specically, we study the impact factors on video transcoding in the cloud, and then we develop a model to trade-o between performance and cost of cloud. On the other hand, video streaming providers generally have to store several formats of the same video and stream the appropriate format based on the characteristics of the viewer's device. This approach, called pre-transcoding, incurs a signicant cost to the stream providers that rely on cloud services. Furthermore, pre-transcoding is proven to be inecient due to the long-tail access pattern to video streams. To reduce the incurred cost, we propose to pre-transcode only frequently-accessed videos (called hot videos) and partially pre-transcode others, depending on their hotness degree. Therefore, we need to measure video stream hotness. Accordingly, we first, provide a model to measure the hotness of video streams. Then, we develop methods that operate based on the hotness measure and determine how to pre-transcode videos to minimize the cost of stream providers. The partial pre-transcoding methods operate at dierent granularity levels to capture dierent patterns in accessing videos. Particularly, one of the methods operates faster but cannot partially pre-transcode videos with the non-long-tail access pattern. Experimental results show the ecacy of our proposed methods, specically, when a video stream repository includes a high percentage of Frequently Accessed Video Streams and a high percentage of videos with the non-long-tail accesses pattern.

The emerging and fast growth of multimedia services have created new challenges for network service providers in order to guarantee the best user's Quality of Experience (QoE) in diverse networks with distinctive access technologies. Usually, various methods and techniques are used to predict the user satisfaction level by studying the combined impact of numerous factors. In this thesis, we consider two important multimedia services to evaluate the user perception, which are: video streaming service, and VoIP. This study investigates user's QoE that follows three directions: (1) methodologies for subjective QoE assessment of video services, (2) regulating user's QoE using video a rate adaptive algorithm, and (3) QoE-based power efficient resource allocation methods for Long Term Evaluation-Advanced (LTE-A) for VoIP. Initially, we describe two subjective methods to collect the dataset for assessing the user's QoE. The subjectively collected dataset is used to investigate the influence of different parameters (e.g. QoS, video types, user profile, etc.) on user satisfaction while using the video services. Later, we propose a client-based HTTP rate adaptive video streaming algorithm over TCP protocol to regulate the user's QoE. The proposed method considers three Quality of Service (QoS) parameters that govern the user perception, which are: Bandwidth, Buffer, and dropped Frame rate (BBF). The BBF method dynamically selects the suitable video quality according to network conditions and user's device properties. Lastly, we propose a QoE driven downlink scheduling method, i.e. QoE Power Escient Method (QEPEM) for LTE-A. It esciently allocates the radio resources, and optimizes the use of User Equipment (UE) power utilizing the Discontinuous Reception (DRX) method in LTE-A

Adaptive video streaming techniques enable the delivery of content that is encoded at various levels of quality and split into temporal segments. Before downloading a segment, the client runs an adaptation algorithm to determine the level of quality that best matches the network resources. For immersive video streaming this adaptation mechanism should also consider the head movement of a user watching the 360° video to maximize the quality of the viewed portion. However, this adaptation may suffer from errors, which impact the end user’s quality of experience. In this case, an HTTP/1 client must wait for the download of the next segment to choose a suitable quality. In this thesis, we propose to use the HTTP/2 protocol instead to address this problem. First, we focus live streaming video. We design a strategy to discard video frames when the band width is very variable in order so as to avoid the rebuffering events and the accumulation of delays. The customer requests each video frame in an HTTP/2 stream which allows to control the delivery of frames by leveraging the HTTP/2 features at the level of the dedicated stream. Besides, we use the priority and reset stream features of HTTP/2 to optimize the delivery of immersive videos. We propose a strategy to benefit from the improvement of the user’s head movements prediction overtime. The results show that HTTP/2 allows to optimize the use of network resources and to adapt to the latencies required by each service

Resumen
This report analyzes data collected from 2700 churches of the Center for Congregations in Indianapolis through the Connect Through Tech grant program between 2020-2021. This report analyzes data gathered from applications to the CTT grant and final reports submitted by these churches, in order to learn how churches understand and perceive the role of churches, technology, and their relationship changed during the first two years of the pandemic as they incorporated digital media into their ministry work. The “Mission to Serve Tech” report explores three key themes: (1) how leaders understanding of the mission of the church may have changed during the pandemic, (2) the general understanding of how churches conceptualize the relationship between church and technology before and then later during the pandemic, and (3) the ways technology created both unique opportunities and new challenges that cause churches perceptions and actions to shift in new ways. Important findings of this report include that most churches (84.7%) used their grant funds to purchase live-streaming services and camera/video equipment (82%).
