Resumen
The philosophy department in Edinburgh is in David Hume tower; the philosophy faculty at Cambridge is in Sidgwick Avenue. In one way, no competition. Everybody (who's anybody) has heard of Hume, whereas even the anybody who's anybody may not have heard of Sidgwick. Yet in another way, Sidgwick wins this arcane contest. For if David Hume, contradicting the Humean theory of personal identity, were to return to Edinburgh, he would not recognize the tower. Whereas, if someone with more success in rearousing spirits than Sidgwick himself had could now produce him, Sidgwick would know the avenue. For he planned it; he partially paid for it; and he pushed it past the local opposition. He was its creator. And creator not just of the avenue: if Sidgwick is not quite the only begetter, it was he more than anyone who was responsible for building the school of philosophy in Cambridge which is being celebrated in this series of articles.

This paper describes the series of three electronic drawing machines Desmond Paul Henry constructed during the 1960s from World War II analogue bombsight computers and which, by virtue of their inspiration, idiosyncratic modus operandi and analogue-derived effects, earn Henry a place as a British computer art pioneer. The abstract graphic results of these now-defunct drawing machines are presented as precursors to digital images.

Resumen
Since winning wide acclaim and a Tony Award for his play M. Butterfly in 1988, David Henry Hwang (Fig. 1) has remained one of the brightest luminaries in American theatre. A playwright, screenwriter, and librettist, he regularly tells stories that center on complex characters and reveal their experiences with Western imperialism, American racism, and cross-generational family differences. His works include the plays FOB, Golden Child, Yellow Face, Chinglish, and Kung Fu; the revised book for the 2002 Broadway revival of the Rodgers and Hammerstein's musical Flower Drum Song; and, most recently, episodes of the television series The Affair. In this interview, Hwang reflects on the longevity of East West Players, comments on today's culture wars, and shares his perspective on the current state of Asian American theatre.

When Kenneth Clark did his monumental Civilisation series for the BBC some thirty years ago he subtitled it "A Personal View," which really amounts to an oxymoron, as if a survey of some two thousand years of western culture could be anything else. Henry Louis Gates, Jr., scholar-celebrity, chair of Harvard University's Afro-American studies program, director of the W.E.B. DuBois Institute for Afro-American Research, MacArthur Foundation fellow, frequent contributor to the New Yorker magazine, and author of the award winning The Signifying Monkey: A Theory of Afro-American Literary Criticism, recalls the influence that series had on a young and impressionable "Skip" Gates growing up in Piedmont, West Virginia.

Hines, Sara Marie. "'Taste of the world' : a re-evaluation of the publication history and reception context of Andrew Lang's Fairy Book series, 1889-1910". Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/7792.

Texto completo
Resumen
This thesis examines Andrew Lang’s Fairy Book series (1889-1910) as a material and cultural commodity, thereby re-evaluating neglected or overlooked aspects of its significance as a printed collection of fairy tales. First, it defines the publishing context for fairy-tale collections printed in Britain prior to the publication of The Blue Fairy Book in 1889. As such, Chapter One addresses pervasive claims that Lang’s series systematically revived a waning interest in fairy tales. The chapter first offers context for Lang’s series by providing a bibliographic history of the classic fairy tales – most of which are included in The Blue Fairy Book – in English from 1691 to 1889. It then focuses specifically on the decade of the 1880s to examine types of fairy-tale collections that were available in print prior to the series’ first volume and suggests that the fairy tale as a publishing phenomenon was more prominent in the late nineteenth century than has been assumed. Chapter Two seeks to establish how the diverse literary, cultural, and intellectual course of Lang’s career made him particularly suitable to edit a collection of fairy tales. His academic interests in literature as well as his ongoing study of fairy tales influenced his editorial strategies for The Blue Fairy Book, which then provided a model for the remainder of the series. Chapter Three examines the phenomenon of the “literary series” through an exploration of paratextual elements, such as Longmans’ production, branding, and marketing strategies as well as Henry J. Ford’s book illustrations and designs. The seasonal context in which the books were published provides a further framework for situating Lang’s series within the history of publishing fairy tales in Britain. Chapter Four considers the series’ printings and sales numbers, along with themes that are present throughout the published reception of the series. While Longmans capitalizes on Lang’s name in their branding strategies, in the popular press Lang’s name became synonymous with fairy-tale narratives. Furthermore, the series’ immediate reception challenges more recent scholarly positions regarding the very significant group of translators who contributed towards the series. Finally, Chapter Five recognizes the colonial context of the period and positions interest in fairy tales within the wider nineteenth-century phenomenon of collecting objects and narratives from across the Empire. It further demonstrates how narratives of race and colonialism influenced both text and illustration in the Fairy Books. The conclusion consists of a brief overview of Fairy Book editions that have been produced from 1910 to the present. Not only did the series achieve immediate popularity during its initial publication, but it has also remained in print for over a century. Through an exploration of the series as a material, publishing phenomenon, and by attending closely to presentational devices, this thesis re-examines the cultural significance of Lang’s Fairy Books.

Langdell, Sebastian James. "Religious reform, transnational poetics, and literary tradition in the work of Thomas Hoccleve". Thesis, University of Oxford, 2014. http://ora.ox.ac.uk/objects/uuid:a2e8eb46-5d08-405d-baa9-24e0400a47d8.

Texto completo
Resumen
This study considers Thomas Hoccleve’s role, throughout his works, as a “religious” writer: as an individual who engages seriously with the dynamics of heresy and ecclesiastical reform, who contributes to traditions of vernacular devotional writing, and who raises the question of how Christianity manifests on personal as well as political levels – and in environments that are at once London-based, national, and international. The chapters focus, respectively, on the role of reading and moralization in the Series; the language of “vice and virtue” in the Epistle of Cupid; the moral version of Chaucer introduced in the Regiment of Princes; the construction of the Hoccleve persona in the Regiment; and the representation of the Eucharist throughout Hoccleve’s works. One main focus of the study is Hoccleve’s mediating influence in presenting a moral version of Chaucer in his Regiment. This study argues that Hoccleve’s Chaucer is not a pre-established artifact, but rather a Hocclevian invention, and it indicates the transnational literary, political, and religious contexts that align in Hoccleve’s presentation of his poetic predecessor. Rather than posit the Hoccleve-Chaucer relationship as one of Oedipal anxiety, as other critics have done, this study indicates the way in which Hoccleve’s Chaucer evolves in response to poetic anxiety not towards Chaucer himself, but rather towards an increasingly restrictive intellectual and ecclesiastical climate. This thesis contributes to the recently revitalized critical dialogue surrounding the role and function of fifteenth-century English literature, and the effect on poetry of heresy, the church’s response to heresy, and ecclesiastical reform both in England and in Europe. It also advances critical narratives regarding Hoccleve’s response to contemporary French poetry; the role of confession, sacramental discourse, and devotional images in Hoccleve’s work; and Hoccleve’s impact on literary tradition.

Resumen
Feminist autobiography is a genre with long-standing literary and philosophical tradition, still some aspects, like, autobiography as “death writing” have come to scholarly attention as of relatively recent. The conceptual framework hinged on the concepts of “tanatography” (defined as an account of a person’s death) and “autotanatography” (defined as an account of one’s own death) makes it possible to take a fresh look into feminist writings from 19th and 20th centuries (Alice James and Simone de Beauvoir). Among the questions for the critical reflection we can mention the following ones: issues of memory and forgetting, of death of the significant other, of aging, of suicide, of literary death (ending the writing career path). Autothanatography is self-death-writing, instead of self-life-writing, even if death is an experience that cannot be had for oneself. The current article takes a look into the auto-death-writing of two women writers: Alice James (1848-1892) – a sister of William and Henry James and Simone de Beauvoir (1908-1986). Although both women’s lives are set almost a century apart and none of them define herself as a feminist writer, their memoirs are written from the vantage point of imminent death. In the first case (James’s) we can speak of her posthumously published diaries, especially their second part written after she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Whereas in the latter (Beauvoir’s) case the autothanatological vibe is felt throughout the whole series of her memoirs (“Memoirs of a dutiful daughter”, “The prime of life”, “Force of circumstance”, “A very easy death”), but especially in the oeuvre “All is said and done” – the writing in anticipation of one’s death. The aspect that is common to both writers is that their memoirs exhibit the strategy of recollection, of re-reading their life events anew in the wake of the end (physical and/or authorial).

Mouton, Thomas. "Processional Dérive: Review of New Orleans Black Masking Indian Parading as Psychogeographical Praxis". En 112th ACSA Annual Meeting. ACSA Press, 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.35483/acsa.am.112.49.

Texto completo
Resumen
This paper will review the Black Masking Indian culture of New Orleans, Louisiana through the lens of Henry Louis Gates Jr’s. Signifyin(g) concept as well as concepts from the Situationist International (SI). Outside of New Orleans they may be more commonly known as Mardi Gras Indians, but Black Masking Indians will be used throughout the paper. Gate’s literary concept allows for a historicization of the Black Masking Indian culture as a series of subversive acts by utilizing the rhetorical black homonym to contextualize the Black Masking Indian processions not merely as just another organization parading during Mardi Gras. With the inclusion of literary concepts, these place-making performative rituals embody AbdouMaliq Simone’s Generic Blackness which “points to the substrates of city-making which prevailing regimes of urban power can never fully apprehend or control”. Literary concepts are crucial to overcoming these issues of apprehension, illuminating the complexity inherit within any marginalized community’s inhabitation of space.Utilization of literary concepts allow for apprehension of the performative processions as radical spatial praxis with recognizable similarities to psychogeographical concepts developed by the French collective. In Black Masking Indian procession’s one will find variations in application of Psychogeography which allow for the study of specific effects of the urban (geographic) environment on the emotions and behaviors of individuals when conducted by racialized groups. The sections proceeding the initial literary review will criti-cally examine the lack of inclusive Psychogeography studies from the SI. As Khatib was the sole none white member of the SI, examination of Abdelhafid Khatib’s failed attempt at a psychogeographic study raises critical questions for the application of SI concepts with marginalized communities.Overall the goal of this paper is to examine the potential inclusion of literary concepts countering the typical reading of the Black Masking Indian processions and New Orleans Mardi Gras as “one in the same.” Presented as such is characteristic of a Eurocentric hegemonic observation, both in its failure to identify the micro-cultural events as radical spatial praxis and its perpetuation of passive racist tropes of marginalized communities as void of agency and incapable of self-actualization. Insights from this comparative review provide a critical lens in which to view the social, geographic, and historic separation between the SI and Black Masking Indians. What can be concluded from this comparative review is how the complexity of subaltern urban spatial inhabitation requires the synthesis of theorists not often associated with spatial studies. This of course highlights the continued predominance of white Eurocentric spatial theories and the need for a pluralistic methodological approach that develops a critical spatial discourse incorporating theories from the Global South as well as literary concepts.
