The first human uses of forests date back to the Paleolithic period. Since then, man has constantly modified the forest cover. Based on the history of human forest use, three research questions emerge: 1- what is the forest landscapes composition? 2- How is the forest vegetation landscape distributed? 3- How the human impact on the forest vegetation landscape could be assessed? To answer these questions, the armorican Massif, the most least-forested territory in France with large agricultural areas, is studied. This project is part of the CarHAB national program initiated by the FrenchEcological Ministry in 2010, based on a dynamiccatenal phytosociology approach. Symphytosociology and geosymphytosociology focus on both dynamical aspects (series) and spatial distribution of communities at different scales (geoseries), and are consequently particularly well-adapted for the forest ecocomplexes study. First, a typology of the forest vegetation series and geoseries in the armorican Massif is proposed. Then, a mapping of actual vegetation (VA) and potential natural vegetation (PNV) is done on study area representative sites. Finally, a diachronic study on the Andaine massif (61) is used to assess past and present human impact and to simulate the future evolution of the forest vegetation landscape. Those informations, combined with the PNV site map, are used to develop management guidelines and provide to forest managers a tool to get closer to the PNV while ensuring a multifunctional site operation at the same time

This PhD dissertation is concerned with time series analysis for medium spatial resolution (MSR) remote sensing images. The main advantage of MSR data is their high temporal rate which allows to monitor land use. However, two main problems arise with such data. First, because of cloud coverage and bad acquisition conditions, the resulting time series are often corrupted and not directly exploitable. Secondly, pixels in medium spatial resolution images are often “mixed” in the sense that the spectral response is a combination of the response of “pure” elements. These two problems are addressed in this PhD. First, we propose a data assimilation technique able to recover consistent time series of Leaf Area Index from corrupted MODIS sequences. To this end, a plant growth model, namely GreenLab, is used as a dynamical constraint. Second, we propose a new and efficient unmixing technique for time series. It is in particular based on the use of “elastic” kernels able to properly compare time series shifted in time or of various lengths.Experimental results are shown both on synthetic and real data and demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed methodologies

Forest cover mapping is an essential tool for forest management. Detailed maps, characterizing forest types at a régional scale, are needed. This need can be fulfilled by médium spatial resolution optical satellite images time sériés. This thesis aims at improving the supervised classification procédure applied to a time sériés, to produce maps detailing forest types at a régional scale. To meet this goal, the improvement of the results obtained by the classification of a MODIS time sériés, performed with a stratification of the study area, was assessed. An improvement of classification accuracy due to stratification built by object-based image analysis was observed, with an increase of the Kappa index value and an increase of the reject fraction rate. These two phenomena are correlated to the classified végétation area. A minimal and a maximal value were identified, respectively related to a too high reject fraction rate and a neutral stratification impact. We carried out a second study, aiming at assessing the influence of the médium spatial resolution time sériés organization and of the algorithm on classification quality. Three distinct classification algorithms (maximum likelihood, Support Vector Machine, Random Forest) and several time sériés were studied. A significant improvement due to temporal and radiométrie effects and the superiority of Random Forest were highlighted by the results. Thematic confusions and low user's and producer's accuracies were still observed for several classes. We finally studied the improvement brought by a spatial resolution change for the images composing the time sériés to discriminate classes of mixed forest species. The conclusions of the former study (MODIS images) were confirmed with DEIMOS images. We can conclude that these effects are independent from input data and their spatial resolution. A significant improvement was also observed with an increase of the Kappa index value from 0,60 with MODIS data to 0,72 with DEIMOS data, due to a decrease of the mixed pixels rate

Since the 1970’s and particularly through the works of Tüxen (1978) and Géhu & Rivas-Martínez (1981), the dynamico-catenal phytosociology allowed to better integrate vegetation dynamics, by describing more precisely the dynamic trajectories of vegetation series. If vegetations dynamic study methodologies have been developped over the recent decades in Europe, such works still remain scarce in France. A national program of habitat mapping (CarHAB), launched by the Ministry of Ecology, since 2011, aims to map the vegetation and vegetation series of metropolitan France at the scale of 1: 25 000 up to 2025. Within this context, Corsica has been chosen as a "pilot" region, due to its peculiarities regarding mediterranean and alticole vegetations. Beyond this singularity, the evolution of agropastoral society over the twentieth century caused main changes the landscape of Corsica and represents a major issue to understand the changes of dynamic trajectories of vegetation. Our methodology, based on an inductive and semi-deductive phytosociological approach, allows to describe vegetationsystems of Corsica. This study, firstly focused on bioclimatology, geomorphology and phytogeography, allows to typify and spatialize ecological units, in order to better understand ecological patterns that govern the layout and the zonation of vegetation and more widely vegetation series and geoseries. The principles of landscape phytosociology have been revised and adapted to the conservation management aims and spatial planning of the CarHAB program. 78 units, 34 series, 14 minoriseries and 30 geopermaseries are presented according to several descriptive criteria: ecology, chorology, serie head structure and nomenclature, dynamics trajectories and conservation.A mapping method was developed to spatialize sigmetal and geosigmetal units : the outcomes are presented in a mapping atlas concerning eight valleys and trays (Asco, Cap Corse, Niolu, Fium-Alto, Haut-Vénacais, Cuscione, Bonifacio) and 31 coastal sites.A few bioevaluation methods are tested and discussed to match the challenges of conservation series and vegetation géoséries, as well as evaluation protected sites (Biguglia, Haut-Vénacais)

The Mediterranean vegetation landscape, whose formation depends mainly on human action, is currently threatened by the increase of anthropic influences that cause a profound modification of the landscape. Forest ecosystems are being replaced by anthropized ecosystems, threatening the biodiversity of this region. This work is conducted within the framework of the management and conservation of biodiversity in the Mediterranean region, in general, and that of Algeria in particular. It consists of the typology and mapping of vegetation and vegetation series of the eastern Dahra, in order to better understand the importance of disturbances of anthropogenic origin and to propose the establishment of an adapted and reasoned management. The study area was chosen as a "pilot" region because of its geomorphological and orographic heterogeneity, the anthropic pressure it is subject to and the particularities of its vegetation characterized by sensitive, unstable and often degraded formations. The landscape phytosociology allows on the one hand the study and the description of the dynamic trajectories of thevegetation series and on the other hand to evaluate the weight of the anthropization in the shaping of the vegetation landscapes. The landscape phytosociological method, used for more than three decades in Europe, remains little developed in North Africa and more specifically in Algeria. This work constitutes a first basis that could be pursued to generalize this approach on the whole North African perimeter. This study allows to identify and map vegetation (actual and potential) and vegetation series and to understand their dynamic trajectory and identifies areas of conservation concern. It provides a tool for biodiversity management and conservation stakeholders, that allows to determine the degree of conservation or degradation of vegetation, to identify areas impacted by human activities by identifying their distance from the natural potential vegetation

This research project is part of the program CarHAB designed for the mapping of natural and semi-natural habitats and funded by the French Ministry of Environment. It aims at proposing 1) landscape vegetation typology and 2) a methodology to map vegetation of French low mountain range at the landscape scale, taking into account the vegetation dynamic. The study area is the Clermont-Ferrand region, in Auvergne, from the Limagne plains to the “chaîne des Puys” (Massif central, France) which is a mountainous region. It is particularly varied regarding both abiotic and biotic drivers of plant types and thereafter includes a large variety of habitats. Six main types of ecosystems were studied, over a 51 544 ha large area : an alluvial valley, a sedimentary plain, xerothermic hills, plateau and fault on crystalline rocks and mountains of the monts Dômes. The first step of this landscape approach had consisted to propose an analytical phytosociological referential, based on 5614 relevés from bibliography and ours. A descriptive catalog of the plant associations occuring over the studied area was provided. Based on those diagnostic tools, 173 associations or plant assemblages was identified in the study area. The main body of this work consists of the elaboration of a spatiotemporal predictive model of the current and potential vegetation, using the dynamico-catenal approach. The benefit of this approach, defined and discussed in this work, is that it represents three levels of organization of the vegetation, i.e. plant communities (plant association, habitat), their dynamics (serie) and their spatial organization in the landscape (geoserie). It permits to take into account the ecological variables driving vegetation patterns (tessella, catena). Following this “dynamico-catenal” analysis, 81 typological units have been found and characterized: 60 series of vegetation (23 séries, 5 sous-séries, 5 curtaséries 23 permaséries and 4 théroséries) and 21 geoseries of vegetation (14 géoséries, 3 géocurtaséries and 4 géopermaséries). Each of them is fully described in this work, in particular regarding their dynamic affinity diagrams, geographical extension, conservation state, degree of anthropisation or naturality... This work achieved several methodological issues: 1) A specific module of the VegFrance data base was established, using the Turboveg software, to store relevés at the landscape scale realized (synrelevés, géosynrelevés). 2) A predictive model of the impact of the climate change on the vegetation series was sketched, according to the objectives of the COP 21 scheme. 3) The bio-indicator values of Ellenberg were used here at several levels: taxa, plant communities and vegetation series. These data were analyzed statistically and their variability within and between vegetation series was assessed as cues for ecological variability and more generally for the naturality/anthropization of each serie. Finally a modus operandi is proposed for analyzing and mapping vegetation in similar regions, according to the objectives of the CarHAB framework. Three maps of vegetation were realized: one represents the series resulting from the analysis of the current vegetation, the second represents the geoserie of the area study. The third is a map of the series of potential vegetation which may be expected under the hypothesis of a global climate change
