This thesis investigates the role of our built environment in relation to concurrent trends in drone technology and wildlife conservation. The thesis is broken up into two parts, the first exploring new methodologies of site-investigation, and the second exploring architecture as tool for ecological conservation and preservation. The architecutral site-exploration process is redifined using drone mapping and data visualization, in hopes of achieving a more holistic understanding of our rural and wilderness landscapes, with the goal of further utilizing this understanding to inform an architecture that resides harmoneously within it's "place." The eventual designed construct can be viewed as a modern reinterpretation of the American fire-tower, a declining typology tradtionally used to safeguard our natural and wilderness resources and landscapes. This new construct takes a dynamically diffent approach, and functions as a wilderness drone-port that facilitates a fleet of unmanned aerial vehicles to monitor the changes of behaviors and populations in Virginia's wildlife, advancing our methodologies of local conservation and ecological studies.

Texto completoENGLISH ABSTRACT: Moral theories on abortion are often regarded as mutually exclusive. On the one hand, pro-life advocates maintain that abortion is always morally wrong, for life is sacred from its very beginning. On the other hand, the extreme liberal view advocated by the absolute pro-ehoieers claims that the unborn is not a person and has no moral standing. On this view there is no conflict of rights; women have the right to dispose of their body as they wish. Therefore, killing a non-person is always permissible. In between the two extreme views, some moral philosophers argue that a 'pre-sentient' embryo or fetus cannot be harmed because it lacks the ability to feel pain or pleasure, for it is 'sentience' that endows a living entity (human and non-human) with moral considerability. Therefore, abortion of a pre-sentient embryo or fetus is permissible. Neurophilosophy rests a philosophical conclusion on neurological premises. In other words, to be tenable sentientism - the claim that sentience endows an entity with moral standing - needs robust neurobiological evidence. The question is, then: What is the basic neuroanatomical and neurophysiological apparatus required to be sentient? The answer to that question requires a fair understanding of the evolution, anatomy and function of the brain. The exploration thereof shows quite convincingly that the advocates of sentientism do not provide convincing arguments to root their theory in neurobiological facts. Their claims rest rather on emotions and on behaviours that look like a reaction to pain. The other shortcoming of sentientism is that it fails to distinguish pain from suffering, and that as a utilitarian moral theory it considers only the alleged pain of the aborted sentient fetus and disregards the pregnant woman's pain and suffering. And, finally, sentientism leaves out of our moral consideration living and non-living entities that deserve moral respect. The main thrust of the dissertation is that the argument of sentience as its advocates present it has no neurophilosophical grounds. Therefore, the argument from sentience is not a convincing argument in favour or against abortion.

Humans have long been drawn to the study of nonhuman animal cognitive and emotional intelligence, but have long come up short. Cognitive scientists look for signs of a sense of self, the ability to solve problems, and the capacity for communication in a vast array of nonhuman species, from cephalopods to primates. In this particular search, science has been increasingly successful as researchers report that New Caledonian crows can use tools to solve rather complex problems; that dolphins and songbirds can identify themselves in mirrors; and that dogs can "turn off' survival drives in order to engage in play behavior. In fact, nonhuman animal intelligence research is exploding rather wildly onto the scene. Other scientists aren't as fortunate. They have a much more difficult time identifying with any certainty that nonhuman animals experience emotion, but the answers are approaching illumination. Mice show signs of empathy. Rats laugh when they play...and when intrepid researchers tickle them. Anxious dogs respond identically to humans when fed meat-flavored Prozac. No matter what these behaviors look like, however, emotional experience is subjective and thus still just beyond of scientific reach. As long as subjective experience of nonhuman animals is brushed off by science, the search for evidence of cognitive and emotional intelligence in these creatures is at a hard-headed stand-still. Wrought with fears of anthropomorphism and crushed reputations, these research areas are perpetually at risk for withering away into scientific obscurity. A transformation of thought, a readjustment of methods is deeply needed. A revolution is likely close around the corner, and with it will come a move away from anthropocentric science, as well as some difficult ethical and moral questions.

Abstract: In Brazil, in 2011 it was produced 544,490 tons of fish from aquaculture. The concern with the level of welfare of animals for food production is increasing in the Western world. However, traditional methods of killing fish cause a high degree of suffering and studies of humane slaughter methods in native species are still scarce. Furthermore, the most regulations slaughter of farm animals include do not include fish. Thus, this work aimed to study parameters for electrical stunning in two species and to study the perception on fish sentience, welfare and slaughter by citizens from Bogotá, Colombia, and Curitiba, Brazil. This study is divided into five chapters: (1) Presentation; (2) Perception on fish sentience, welfare and humane slaughter by Latin American citizens; (3) Electrical stunning in pacu (Piaractus mesopotamicus); (4) Electrical stunning in South American catfish (Rhamdia quelen) and (5) Final considerations. The chapter on the perception of citizens showed that respondents consider the fish as sentient beings. The classification of sentience perception among taxonomic groups seems in accordance with the phylogenetic proximity to humans, suggesting greater sensitivity towards mammals. Citizens perceived a high degree of suffering in recreational angling, fair live fish and fish used in laboratories. In addition, respondents agreed with the inclusion of fish in humane slaughter regulations. The chapters on electrical stunning allowed identified parameters of electrical stunning to unconsciousness times greater than 1 min and no significant changes in muscle pH and rigor mortis of carcasses. Further, parameters used were safe in terms of avoiding fractures, bleeding or petechial in the carcasses. The results point to the need for research development to improve the current fish slaughtering practices in Brazil, as well as the importance of including fish in the regulation of humane slaughter. Further studies are needed to provide tools applicable in the industry in order to establish humane slaughter practices in fish reduce the suffering of a large number of individuals. Keywords: Animal welfare. Electrical stunning. Humane slaughter. Hypothermia. Perception. Suffering. Unconsciousness.

Texto completoFish quality is subject to many factors, including the stunning methods. In this research we used the electric shock at different intensities as stunning method cobia (Rachycentron canadum), and evaluated its effects on the quality of chilled and frozen fish fillets. The experiment was conducted in two trials, the first desensitizing the fish with electroshock intensities 100; 150 and 200 volts, and stored refrigerated for 21 days. In the second assay was applied using the electrical current intensities 50; 100; 150 Volts, then filleting and storage under freezing. The fish used in both assays were obtained from a commercial fish farm located on the northern coast of São Paulo about 50 km by sea from the town of Ubatuba, Brazil. Fish quality traits were physical, chemical and sensory characteristics as volatile nitrogenous bases, dielectric measurements, Rigor Mortir index, pH, protein denaturation, fatty acid profile and their relationships, texture, color, drip loss, cooking loss, water holding capacity (WHC), sensory evaluation of freshness, ATP and degradation products and lipid oxidation. The experimental design was a 6X3 factorial six times analysis and three electric shock intensities in the first test; the second test was used factorial 4X3 (fourstroke analyzes and three shock voltages). There were significant differences (p <0.05) in both trials for most variables, for both treatments, weather, but also to the influence of storage time within each treatment. However, for the two trials the number of significant variables between treatments was lower than the number of variables that were significant to the storage times, with the interaction time*treatment they received substantial significance within results found. In these two trials conducted using the cooling and freezing Bijupirá, the best results for the treatment intensity at 150 volts for most variables where there were significant differences (p <0.05) were observed between treatments. It was also concluded that cobia can be kept within seven days of slaughter in cold storage and up to 180 days when stored at freezing.

Texto completoThe present paper proposes an investigation into the ethical and legal treatment of animals, evincing the recognition of sentience as a criterion in the moral consideration of animals. It discusses initially the differences and similarities between humans and other animals, anthropocentrism as a factor that favors the nonconsideration of non-human animals as beings having intrinsic values, and the legacy of Immanuel Kant as opposed to biocentrism, that includes life, in general, in the core of the universe; also, the recent debates regarding the possibility of recognizing animals fundamental rights and the development of a multidimensional and comprehensive dignity, the latter being based on the studies of Ingo Sarlet. Next, the paper presents an overview of the constitutions of Germany, Switzerland and Ecuador, also highlighting some features of English law, so as study the legal treatment given to animals in these countries. It also analyses the constitutional and infra-constitutional position of the non-human animal in the Brazilian legal system. Finally, it touches on the use of animals in scientific experiments, teaching activities, cultural events, shows and religious rituals, from the viewpoint of animals wellbeing and rights, suggesting a reflection on the need to bring animals within the sphere of moral consideration, opposing speciesism. The ideas presented are based on Peter Singer s theory of the equal consideration of interests and Tom Regan s theory of animals rights

Texto completoIn the last ten years some writs of habeas corpus have been filed, in Brazil and in other countries, on behalf of great primates. It is a matter of constitutional order and one more instrument utilized for activists for the recognition of the Animal s Rights. This slope, even if generates many controversies, is coming neatly bigger in the past few years, as we can verify throughout the doctrinal and jurisprudential production. The sentience always have been the central element inside the debates evolving the rela-tionship between humans and other animals. Scientific progress that have finding the impressive genetic closeness among us and the great primates, boosted the requests of habeas corpus on behalf of the latter. The grant of the order and, consequently, the admission of rights to the animals generates countless questionings. If the humankind proceeds in the path of the emancipatory trajectory and after receiving all human be-ings in their moral community, could receive , what seems to be the last frontier, the animals, many questionings should be subject of analysis, that already derives from the own grant of the writ to the anthropoids. So, what animals, which rights, what cri-teria to concede them, what judicial instruments must be used to protect them, what is the consequence for humans of the acknowledgment of the Animals Rights and what criteria should be utilized in a conflict of interests between human animals and nonhu-man animals, are some of the largely complex questionings that will be subject of re-flection in the present work

Texto completoAnimals, which for a long time were legally classified as property, are nowadays beginning to be recategorised. Even if French law denies them the status of non-human persons, they are nonetheless recognized as being sentient. This legal oddity, in which animals are at one and the same time both living beings and property, has been the subject of numerous studies, and certain researchers have succeeded in resolving these paradoxes. However, if the status of animals has been frequently examined from a legal angle, little specific or overall research has been undertaken in the domain of public law. And yet, it appears that the study of animals in public law raises questions and answers that are equally interesting. That is why the present thesis, « Animals in public law », follows two main, complementary choices: that of being an inventory, and that of theorizing. Charting, first of all, the reality of the situation seems essential in order to facilitate doctrinal or jurisprudential interpretation. Secondly, this study has made possible the theorizing of certain judicial questions. Finally, public law offers new perspectives for the creating of a true system of laws concerning animals. This work, whose main outcome is to contribute new elements to dereification and to avoid certain inconsistences, would foreground animal interests – notably by placing animals in a new societal order to be protected, or by setting forth a new approach to the personification of animals. Moreover, the study of comparative public law offers us different perspectives in the defence of animal rights – notably through the constitution

Texto completoThe ground as a support for urban life remains a largely understudied topic in architectural and urban research. In a world where towns compete to offer a better quality of public spaces, pedestrian use is considered as an essential aspect. Felt underfoot and seen on the perceptual horizon without being consciously considered, very little in-depth research has revealed its sentient dimensions. After some brief historical considerations on the importance of urban ground, the study focuses on how the ground is integrated into the lived experience of our environment, beginning with how we learn to walk. The ground is a fundamental dimension and plays an essential role in keeping balance and creating a sense of proprioception. It participates as a basis for bodily experience by providing a surface of exchange. In terms of architecture and urban design, this study posits the ground as part of the ambiance as it constitutes the ambient background of the sensory experience of public spaces. In order to develop this hypothesis three case studies are considered: the first, based on a reactivated listening of twenty sounds recorded in Paris to provide an analysis of the role that the ground plays in experiencing the ambiance; the second, a comparative set of observations and video recordings taken in two sites in Barcelona and La Défense in Paris; the third, is based on ten blind-folded commented walks carried out at La Défense. It tries to examine what the somatic experience of the ground entails, how does the relationship between the ground and the “soma” take place? In conclusion, the reciprocal contributions of Ambiances and Somatics are considered in relation to this material as we ask what new theoretical approaches these disciplines can provide in exploring body experience

Texto completoGrowing up as a child, we had a Dog. To us, it was like a means to an end. That is, hunting other animals for food and for protection, with no special care and treatment given to this animal. Butas days passed by I began to witness a wind of change against such actions. I was made to understand that we were committing two crimes-: using the Dog as a means to an end (for hunting and for eating animals). Today almost every newspaper has something to say about the treatment of animals by humans, especially in their use as experimentation subjects. This has led to the wide spread arguments about “Animal right” and “Animal equality” Advocates of the above arguments hold that just like humans, animals too have rights and are in many ways like humans. There also exist animal right groups. Organisations and countries now have laws regulating animal used in the laboratory. If I may be permitted, I will want to say that the world is in a state of dilemma regarding animal experimentation. While some argue against it, based on the claim that these animals have no right and are not equal to humans, others argue in favour of it on claims that animals have moral rights, feel pain and suffer just like humans and should not be subjected to painful experiments. I then begin to wander how research on animals to improve human health should not be undertaken just because it is claimed that these animals have rights and are in many ways equal to humans. It is the contention of this paper to find out the extent to which animal rights and animal equality justifies the fight against animal experimentation.

This thesis was divided in four parts. The first chapter was expressing the background, technique, and the media through the author’s view toward the “hand-made” and the “material” from the time started doing sculpture in college. The second chapter was the analysis of the elements: the tendency toward the soft material, the chosen of material, the connection between “hand-made” and repeated physical work and the minimum characteristic in creation. The third chapter was responding the second chapter through analyzing the work “Nest”, and the appearance of sculpture work from single piece to the possibility of extended in space. The forth chapter was the analysis of works which noticing the unique physical tactility in installation works then transformed visually through material and molding to express the minimum physical tactility.
André, Lara de Mendonça. "The relevance of sentience: shaping nonanthropocentric politics". Master's thesis, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/1822/64187.
Texto completoThis dissertation explores the contributions of political philosophy to the debate about the consideration of nonhuman sentient beings. First, anthropocentrism and speciesism are analyzed as the dominant positions in moral and political philosophy, according to which human interests have priority (if not exclusive consideration) over nonhuman interests. It is argued that both positions are unjustified and that sentience is the criterion that matters for both moral and political consideration. Once anthropocentric biases are removed, political philosophy can translate ethical issues into the language of justice and place the interests of nonhuman sentient beings within the political realm. Secondly, Rawlsian and non-Rawlsian versions of contractualism are discussed to determine their compatibility with the protection of nonhuman interests. Finally, three fundamental works are analyzed in the context of the so-called “political turn in animal studies”: Zoopolis (2011) by Sue Donaldson and Will Kymlicka who claim the recognition of citizenship for domesticated animals, denizenship for liminal animals and sovereignty for wild animals; Sentientist Politics (2018) by Alasdair Cochrane who proposes a cosmopolitan sentientist democracy; and A Theory of Justice for Animals (2013) by Robert Garner who stresses the need to develop theories of justice that are sensitive to nonhuman interests but also politically feasible. The general conclusion to be drawn is that it is urgent to shift the debate on the consideration of nonhuman sentient beings from a question in applied ethics to a question of political action that requires a commitment of political institutions to the protection of nonhuman sentient beings.
