Resumen
AbstractRetirement villages are an increasingly popular senior housing option that aims to comprehensively integrate accommodation, care services, social activities and interaction opportunities for ageing people. The research literature about retirement villages and communities is extensive, but less studied are the contextually varying spatial, legal and political processes of how such villages and other intermediate housing-with-care solutions for older people are initially constituted, especially in novel national and local contexts. In this paper, a spatio-legal approach is employed to study the many legal possibilities and barriers that have arisen while developing retirement villages in Finland. As a specific case, I examine the new Finnish Virkkulankylä retirement village concept and its implementation process. As the key result of my study, I identify three major spatio-legal barriers to developing retirement villages and other intermediate senior housing solutions, which are (a) the polarised division between the fields of elderly care and housing in both law and practice, (b) the prevalence of ‘local law’ in spatial planning and service provision for elderly people, and (c) the inflexible funding system regarding alternative housing-with-care solutions for seniors. I argue that although the ‘in-betweenness’ of retirement villages may facilitate a more comprehensive understanding about the housing and care of older adults, in practice their intermediary position translates into many ambiguities and challenges.

Resumen
Purpose As the “baby boomer” generation continues to enter their senior post-retirement years, the provision of affordable retirement housing has become increasingly important for the community, practitioners and policymakers. However, relatively little attention has to date been placed on identifying an effective market mechanism for the industry of the independent-living retirement villages to meet this increased and unprecedented demand. This study aims to develop an innovative and affordable retirement village development model which meets the needs of all stakeholders including seniors, retirement village residents, the retirement village industry and government. Design/methodology/approach The attributes of this study are as follows: structure of individual living units, retirement village characteristics, retirement village facilities and services and support mechanisms. The analysis was undertaken based on data relating to independent-living retirement villages in five Australian states. A hedonic pricing model was used where the price distributions relating to these four aspects were estimated. Findings The results confirmed the structures of the independent living units and the retirement village characteristics were closely related to pricing, followed by services and supports with a lesser relationship, although the facilities were not significantly related to pricing. Research limitations/implications This research is not able to address the entire retirement village market in Australia because the available market data are limited. Practical implications This research uses an innovative supply-side approach to assess retirement village attributes and values, which provides stakeholders with up-to-date market information to assist in guiding the performance of the retirement village industry. Social implications The market evaluations imply that seniors are reluctant to pay for village attributes that are not regarded as highly sought-after. A cost-effective strategy of new retirement village developments and upgrades can be further induced, which in turn can enhance the market efficiency and affordability of the retirement villages. Originality/value This pricing model for retirement village units extends previous studies into retirement villages and presents stakeholders with an innovative and reliable market-oriented model.

Resumen
Cluster analysis is an analysis in multivariable statistics that is used to group objects that have the same characteristics. One of the methods in cluster analysis used to group relatively large amounts of data is the K-Means method. In this study, the K-Means method was applied to classify sub-districts in South Sulawesi Province based on village potential. The variables used are the number of: Elementary School/Equivalent degree, Junior High School/Equivalent degree, Senior High School/Vocational School/Equivalent degree, Community Health Center/Pustu, Families without electricity, Villages/Urbans according to market presence, Villages/Towns that are passed by public transportation and Villages/Kelurahan that have lighting main road. The results of this study are that 3 groups are formed where the first cluster consists of 107 sub-districts that have high village potential, the second cluster consists of 16 sub-districts that have medium village potential and the third cluster consists of 184 sub-districts that have low village potential.

Resumen
In India, assembly constituencies (ACs), represented by elected officials, are the primary geopolitical units for state-level policy development. However, data on social indicators are traditionally reported and analyzed at the district level, and are rarely available for ACs. Here, we combine village-level data from the 2011 Indian Census and AC shapefiles to systematically derive AC-level estimates for the first time. We apply this methodology to describe the distribution of 11 education infrastructures—ranging from pre-primary school to senior secondary school—across rural villages in 3773 ACs. We found high variability in access to higher education infrastructures and low variability in access to lower education variables. For 40.3% (25th percentile) to 79.7% (75th percentile) of villages in an AC, the nearest government senior secondary school was >5 km away, whereas the nearest government primary school was >5 km away in just 0% (25th percentile) to 1.9% (75th percentile) of villages in an AC. The states of Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh, and Bihar showed the greatest within-state variation in access to education infrastructures. We present a novel analysis of access to education infrastructure to inform AC-level policy, and demonstrate how geospatial and Census data can be leveraged to derive AC-level estimates for any population health and development indicators collected in the Census at the village level.

Resumen
ABSTRACTChina is experiencing rapid urbanisation and population ageing, alongside sometimes contentious rural land consolidation. These on-going social, economic, political and demographic changes are especially problematic for older people in rural areas. In these regions, social and institutional support arrangements are less developed than in urban areas; older people have few options for re-settlement but are resistant to or incapable of adjusting to high-rise apartment living. In 2012–13, we gathered rich qualitative and quantitative data on over 600 older residents in 12 villages under the jurisdiction of City L in north-east coastal China to analyse residents’ living arrangement choices during the village renovation process. We compared villages with and without senior centres to shed light on the correlates of co-residence and independent living. Senior centres play a role in balancing the burden on rural Chinese families resulting from population ageing, smaller families, widespread migration for work, and the rapid urbanisation that is restructuring land rights and social support arrangements.

Resumen
This paper describes a GIS-based application to illustrate the maps of tourist attractions and ethnic groups of Nan Province in Thailand under a research project funded by the Thailand Research Fund (TRF). Various distribution patterns of languages and settlements of ethnic groups within Nan are mapped according to the collected village data. A questionnaire was designed to collect information from 902 villages. The questionnaire included questions about village background and environment, interesting cultural elements, village names, village history, local tourist places and schools, population, ethnic groups and languages. Nine-hundred questionnaires were distributed by well-trained staff from the Nan Community who conducted interviews of two or three senior people from each village. The data from the questionnaires was then entered into the village database via a developed user interface. In the meantime, a GIS database had been set up by combining map layers from several sources. The map layer set consists of administrative boundaries, roads, rivers, contour lines, as well as associated locations of the villages. The information of each village in the village database was then linked to its location represented by points in the GIS database. With the customized GIS application, various types of interactive queries about village data, as well as tourist attractions or ethnolinguistic maps, can be accommodated. Logical block diagrams, user interfaces and results are detailed in this paper.

The accelerated aging of the Chinese population, a consequence of the “one-child policy” and China’s rapid economic development, has prompted the government to deeply transform its welfare system. These transformations affect all aspects of social action related to aging: pensions, health insurance, long-term care insurance, and housing. This thesis explores the government’s efforts at all institutional levels to adapt long-term care and housing supply to a society grappling with the decline of Confucian familialism. Locating at the intersection of the geography of aging and geographical gerontology, this thesis particularly examines the production of yanglaoyuan (nursing homes and retirement homes) and policies for adapting existing housing to the elderly. It draws on the case of two metropolitan areas with similar demographic size but differing economic maturity: Hangzhou, a prosperous coastal city, and Zhengzhou, an inland city in the midst of development. The theoretical framework connects debates on the characterization of social protection regimes to the literature on housing policies and asset-based welfare. The empirical contribution is substantial, based on surveys of 70 public and privatetakehold stakeholders and an ethnographic analysis of 50 residential projects. The results highlight a strong emphasis on aging in place within a home ownership- oriented doctrine, with the goal of providing 90% of residential options with minor local variations. Municipalities oversee the requalification of existing buildings and, as part of urban renewal projects, establish a dense network of community-based services for basic elderly assistance, in coordination with local hospital infrastructure. These initiatives are made possible by the significant public assets inherited from the socialist era, which can be repurposed, and more generally by the continued state ownership of land. This advantage also allows local governments to disengage from the operation of public yanglaoyuan by attracting private operators through the provision of free or low- cost public facilities. Everywhere, this “asset-light” business model is promoted to develop a wide supply of non-profit yanglaoyuan. However, support for this type of housing also involves public subsidies, leading to significant regional inequalities in long-term housing supply based on the financial capacity of local authorities. Even when subsidies are substantial, as in Hangzhou, they are insufficient to significantly reduce housing costs and ensure adequate quality of care, rendering the supply of yanglaoyuan inadequate in terms of medicalization and pricing. These dynamics contribute to reinforcing social and spatial stratification in the living conditions of the elderly, driven by differences in financial capacity of local governments as well as households due to notable disparities in pension amounts based on former employers

Resumen
The research emerged out of a need to address firsthand classroom concerns. The problem identified was that the D.E.T. geography syllabus had a Western-orientated world-view and, as such, was largely inappropriate to the experiences of township pupils. As a result, education in townships tends to maintain the status quo and the marginal position of the majority of South Africans. Recent unpublished research has shown that fieldwork is an effective compensatory tool. If fieldwork is used in the township , it can utilize the local environment which is familiar to pupils. Fieldwork, as an approach, has an additional advantage of being a vehicle for the empowerment of users. The research sets out to explore the potential of the township environment as a site in which fieldwork can be undertaken. Numerous opportunities are identified and these have been developed into fieldwork exercises. Out of the preparatory work, a need arose to establish the viability of doing township fieldwork. The concern is that, in spite of fieldwork appearing in the secondary school syllabus for a number of years, it is a largely unexplored teaching approach. This necessitated the testing and evaluation of fieldwork opportunities in the township environment. The chaotic conditions of township education impinged upon the research process, causing its premature termination. The latter part of the research process raises questions of an ethical nature. Notwithstanding these problems, several positive factors emerge; the negative aspects should not be allowed to overshadow the benefits of the research. An emancipatory action research framework is used to evaluate the research process. The study concludes by highlighting the main issues raised in the research and makes recommendations concerning topics requiring further investigation.

In recent years, senior villages have drawn more attention because of population aging. Moreover, as various deadly and highly infectious diseases have continued to emerge, and the elderly usually have weaker resistance to disease, the outbreak of infection may easily get out of control in senior villages. To perform infection control, medical personnel use the manual method of tracking, investigating, and interviewing patients to acquire patient contact list. This can neither find people who have high infection risk nor to distinguish the distance between patients and other residents. This study proposed a visual infection control positioning system for senior villages using the RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) technology. In order to effectively calculate the distance, this study combined the KNN (K-Nearest Neighbor) algorithm and the location fingerprinting method. KNN algorithm is used to fix errors caused by signal fluctuation to improve the positioning accuracy and effectively calculate the target position. Location fingerprinting method is used to establish fingerprinting database in order to reduce the number of deployed RFID equipment and to reduce the cost of establishing the system. The system records the indoor movement path of the residents in real-time and visually displays the distance between the patients and other residents. Using the proposed system, medical personnel can identify residents with potentially high risk of infection and adopt proper medical measures.

In this study, we use the principle and theory of social capital to study the quality of life of seniors living in senior villages; we hope to explore the relationship between social capital and the quality of life of seniors living in senior villages, as well as to understand the diverse and dynamic lifestyles within senior villages. The advancing and continued evolving healthcare system, science and technology, society and education have all contributed to the increasing life expectancy of the human population. The aging population has created the need to build senior villages. Today, both non-profit government organizations and private companies have started to fund and construct senior villages to accommodate the aging population - offering better quality of life and living environment. Much current research regarding the operation and management of senior villages focuses their studies on the quality of foods and housing within senior villages. For example, most research focuses on the reasons why residents decide to live in senior villages, some research studies the structure of the healthcare system, while other research studies the relationship between living environment, leisure activities, voluntary signup and satisfaction. However, the effects of social capital on the quality of life have, yet, been explored. Therefore, this study uses seniors who are residing in senior villages as research subjects, and investigates the impact of social capital’s Internet on the quality of life of seniors. We study past literatures, recognize the possible spiritual beliefs and values among seniors in the near future; we then explore the operation and management of well-established domestic senior villages. This allows us to study the relationship between social capital and the awareness and appreciation of quality of life among seniors living in senior villages. This study has its academic uniqueness and industrial practicality.

The objectives of this research are to have better understanding of the current long-term care operation and system at three villages: Fuyuan, Fumin and Fuxing in Ruisui Township of Hualien County in the hope of discussing and analyzing the obstacles of suburbs and tribes from a grass-roots perspective. To achieve the above-mentioned objectives and to understand the long-term care issues in these areas, the in-depth interview (first step) is adopted. In the meantime, depending on relevant literatures, the questionnaires are designed to find out solutions, and the specialists in long-term care services in Ruisui County as well as in Guangfu County are considered as the main survey population. After the questionnaires are released for the second time (the sample size was 43 for the second step, and 38 for the third step), the Delphi method is used to evaluate consensus among a panel of experts. The acquired data will be analyzed by One Sample t-Test, Independent Sample t-Test and Analysis of Variance via the software SPSS 20.0. The conclusions are as follows: 1. The expert consensus is focusing on four aspects: "Take the initiative in controlling potential target groups in favor of counseling applications in the future", "Cultivate local manpower to provide services and reduce the personal losses", "Raise the salary and improve the workfare to increase caregivers' willingness to stay" and "Simplify the redundant application procedures". 2. After tested by the software SPSS 20.0, the above-mentioned four factors turned out to be significantly important. What drew our attention the most is the dimension of "Course Diversity": it wasn't highly focused in the expert consensus; however, the significant data were shown by different tests afterwards. It shows that this dimension is approved and recognized by the experts as the potential improvement. Based on the results of research, the following suggestions are made as reference: 1.Take the initiative in controlling potential target groups and provide relevant services in good time. 2.Cultivate local manpower and increase employment opportunities in suburbs and tribes. 3.Raise the salary and improve the workfare to hire talent to work in suburbs and tribes. 4.Simplify the long-term care application procedures to avoid the delay of document process. 5.Plan courses in accordance with different locations and people to increase the production by using talent in an efficient way. 6.Currently, the long-term care 2.0 can be divided into Level A, B and C. Yet, how to make different levels in suburban and tribal areas? The researchers in the future might be able to continue the research on such direction. 7.It is suggested that quantitative research can be added in the study in order to understand deeper the problems, which may increase the reference value of research.

Resumen
The period after the Black Death saw a dramatic demographic reversal and significant structural economic change, including the withdrawal of lords from direct farming. Vale and Chilterns remained distinctive, but in some links were strengthened and experiential differences were reduced. This chapter examines how perceptions of village space were affected by a steepening of village hierarchy and by increased geographical mobility. Great divergence between settlements is revealed in terms of forms and possibly strength of engagement and attachment. The character of social space in villages is examined in part through an innovative study of the reach of church bells, based on fieldwork carried out during the project. Field names are used to uncover shared stories and local traditions, which may have been cultivated and used especially by senior tenants.

Resumen
This chapter focuses on accounts of mended and patched lives, exploring them for threads of kindnesses and poisonous knowledges. The forms of writing analyzed—novellas, short stories, and crafted memoirs—occupy a betwixt and between world of fiction and real lives. Jing-Jing Lee's two short novels sketch in emotional features of Singapore during three important periods: the years following World War II, in which children are lost and replaced; the 1980s, when children move from villages to high-rise apartments as part of planned urban renewal; and the 2000s, as elders move into small senior studio apartments. Danielle Lim's novel and memoir present complicating emotional features of public health crises over the same period involving leprosy, SARS, and nervous breakdown and schizophrenia. A tape recorder once again features, allowing an old woman to tell her tale.

Resumen
India is the world's largest democracy and second most populous country with nearly 1.4 billion people. With reduced birth rates and increasing lifespans, it had nearly 104 million ‘senior citizens' in 2011, expected to grow to 300 million by 2050. Providing care for the elderly in India is a growing public and private concern. Filial piety is embedded in culture and long-term care for parents and the elderly is expected from children. However, over the last five decades there have been rapid changes in socioeconomic patterns with increasing mobility for work and rise of nuclear households. Despite this, elder care is still largely underdeveloped, with lack of formal training in geriatric care and geriatric care curriculum in medical education. Australia has a highly evolved elderly care system with care services that includes retirement villages, home care, residential care, and flexible care. These are provided by subsidization from the government and private user pay system. Australia is well poised to provide aged care expertise and services and shape elderly care in India.

Resumen
In recent years, large-scale urbanisation has been on the rise, with cities being the hubs for growth, but rural business continues to play an important role in any country's overall development. A recent report reveals that almost 69% of India's population resides in their villages, accounting for almost 50% of the nation's GDP. This agricultural region varies from small towns with less than 500 residents to small towns. There are also similar situations in western nations. Despite their economic contribution, smaller villages seem to earn less in terms of infrastructural expenditure. The major problems addressed in these small towns include a shortage of adequate public transit, emergency care, and limited knowledge of federal subsidies for rural areas. Our vision is to expand the smart city to the smart village by allowing the use of recent technical advances and giving more attention to the problems in rural areas. This chapter aims to bring IoT technology to Villages by literally showing a network of linked sensors and knowledge dissemination devices, controlling energy use, and ensuring infrastructure protection. It gives a wide-ranging vision of enhancing the standard of living in villages and encourages them to meet the essential needs of domestic villagers

Resumen
In 1989 Odin Teatret established the Holstebro Festive Week (Denmark), and did so by involving the entire city and its inhabitants. The Festive Week promptly became an on-going event, which takes place every three years in June. What characterises the Holstebro Festive Week in particular? And how has this event influenced the city and its citizens in the longer run? In other words, how can an event like the Festive Week contribute to enriching a city for more than just a week? When I interviewed the Mayor about the Festival and the theatre’s role in the event, he said: “What the theatre brings us is popular and I think it is crucial that we get common experiences in which we can mirror ourselves – in the selfish society we are currently living in. In Holstebro we have become dependent on Odin Teatret, which makes us take part and which has become a common denominator for the entire city. It is a gift that we have Odin Theatret” (interview with the author, June 2011). 1 It is a rather unusual statement for a mayor to make that a theatre is a gift for a city and that it has become a ‘common denominator’ 2 for the city – and, what is more that the city has become dependent on the theatre. In this chapter I will reveal and explore how Odin Teatret involves the entire city. I will try to give a clear answer as to why the Mayor described the theatre as a ‘common denominator’. In my investigation of the theatre’s approach to the Festive Week I use my personal experience and knowledge from my time as assistant manager at the theatre (1987-88). Most of my research has been carried out in the form of field studies conducted during the Festival Weeks in 2008 and 2011. During both festivals I spent one week in Holstebro and the surrounding villages watching and observing how the local audience responded to the activities. In addition I carried out a series of semi-structured interviews with representatives from Holstebro: the head of police, the Deputy Mayor, the director of a travel agency, a librarian, a policeman, the Chairman of the Cultural Affairs Committee of the City Council, the head of city planning, the project leader from the Odin Theatre and a senior lecturer living in Holstebro and working at Aarhus University and finally the Mayor.

Resumen
Now a day by the initiative taken by the Government of India in the scheme of “Smart India”, all villages will soon transfer to Smart Villages. This will be achieved by the Information Technology Platforms. For converting the Villages to Smart Villages, the Internet of Things (IoT) plays a major Role in India. By using IoT everything in the village is connected to the Internet and it is controlled by the users anywhere by remotely. In our project we have taken the problems in Smart Garbage System and Smart Water Level Controller to distribute water from the common tank to all users. In Garbage System the wet and dry waste is identified separately and it regularly monitored whether the tank is full, then information given to municipality to clean that concern Garbage. In water level controller the utilization of water from common tank is controlled and managed by using the mobile application. Keep tracking of water level in the tank by float sensor and based on the water level it will be distributed to the users. The domestic public users also controlled by the user defined commands which is intercepted with the home of particular user.

Resumen
“Retirement Villages” (RVs) are a common form of housing for older people in Australia. RV contracts are very complex. RV residency terminates on death or ill health. At Macquarie we developed a free online RV financial calculator. This is designed to help consumers with understanding the contracts, comparison shopping, and avoiding costly mistakes. It takes account of longevity / health and financial risks. It converts the complex fee structure to a comparison rent payable monthly over the consumers expected healthy lifespan. RVs are much costlier than most consumers expect. The cost varies by gender and increases with age. This tool uses actuarial modelling utilising publicly available data on mortality and disability. The contracts have much in common with insurance policies. This is the first RV calculator available in Australia. The underlying actuarial model is very original and the calculator can handle the vast majority of contract designs.
