Resumen
The criteria for target seedling of Eucalyptus pellita F. Muell are at least 90days old, with consequences for the length of stay of the seedlings in the nursery. This study must assess the suitability as a target seedling first if it wants to plant the seedlings under 90days old in the field. The research aimed to evaluate and obtain the regression equation for the seedling’s age with the seedling’s morphological characters. The shoot seedlings cuttings aged 45, 60, 75, and 90 days after planting in the cocopeat growing medium were assessed. The study was used a survey method with a purposive sampling technique to obtain 60 samples by assessing the growth and appearances of the seedling. Furthermore, 15 samples were taken at random to determine the dry weight of the seedlings. Seedlings aged 75 and 90 days indicated the standard criteria as target seedlings for height, diameter, number of leaves, seedling’s health, shoot appearances, and seedling roots. The two seedlings’age levels have a sturdiness index of 8.34-9.78; shoot-root ratio 3.9-4.5; and seedling quality index (SQI) 0.22-0.23. Seedling age had a powerful positive correlation with the sturdiness index and SQI (r = 0.84 and r = 0.96). The regression equation of the sturdiness index is y = 0.048x + 5.435 (R2 = 0.996) and SQI is y = 0.004x - 0.064 (R2 = 0.926). This research implies that 75 and 90-days seedlings can be considered as one of the criteria for the age of E. pellita shoot cuttings as the target seedling in the SOP of PT. Resumen
In the process of vegetable plug seedling cultivation, packaging, and transportation, there may be missing, unhealthy or injured seedlings in the tray, which results in a missed planting or a low seedling survival rate after automatic transplanting. In this study, a seedling selection system with the function of seedlings identification, week seedlings elimination, and missing seedlings supplement was developed for an automatic transplanter. A plug seedling identification system based on a machine vision was used to detect vegetable plug seedlings based on the area characteristics of plug seedlings, stem leaves and plug bodies. The identification results were transmitted to a programmable logic controller (PLC), which controlled a nozzle to eliminate the unqualified seedlings from the conveyor belt lattice. When the empty conveyor belt lattice reaches the seedling throwing funnel, the rear conveyor belt lattice with the plug seedling is accelerated to ensure the continuity of seedlings supply. The adaptive fuzzy PID control algorithm was used to control the stepper motor of the conveyor belt to realize accurate seedling conveying and a seedling supplement. Using 30 days pepper plug seedlings as experimental seedlings, a comparative field experiment was carried out to evaluate the performance of the seedling selection system. The results showed that when the seedling selection system was turned on and the seedling extracting frequencies were 60, 80, and 100 plants/min, the success rates of plug seedling identification were 98.84%, 98.38%, and 96.99%, and the robust seedling rates were 98.05%, 97.78%, and 95.83%. The robust seedling rates were increased by 15.64%, 16.07%, and 13.89%, respectively, in contrast to turning off the seedling selection system.

Resumen
In midsuccessional old fields, seedlings are often concentrated in patches of disturbed ground, such as earth mounds created by burrowing mammals. An experiment was conducted to determine whether interspecific variation in seedling density on mounds reflected interspecific variation in potential seedling establishment (i.e., the number of seedlings established per 1000 seeds sown). Seeds of 13 old-field forbs were sown on experimentally created mounds in an abandoned pasture. Their potential seedling establishment ranged from 0 to 156 seedlings per 1000 seeds sown, and seedling establishment was directly related to seed mass. The number of seedlings becoming established naturally on mounds ranged from 0.1 to 41 seedlings per mound for the 13 species. Natural seedling establishment and potential seedling establishment were not directly related. Instead, natural seedling establishment on mounds was correlated with species' frequency of occurrence off mounds. This suggests that seed availability may be more important than seedling establishment in controlling seedling density on mounds. However, if seed availability is unlimited or equal among species, then seedling establishment could control seedling density on disturbed ground. Key words: disturbance, seedling density, old field.

Resumen
Floating seedling technology was used to propagate banana seedlings. The effects of different substrates, such as wood bran, vermiculite, and Murashige and Skoog (MS) nutrient solution, at different concentrations on the survival rate of banana floating seedlings and the growth of seedling stem, leaf, and root systems were compared. The results showed that banana seedlings treated with MS nutrient solution at one-half or one-third concentration or hydroponically with controlled slow-release fertilizer (0.5–0.6 g/plant) directly added to the wood bran substrate grew the fastest and had the largest number of roots. At 50 days after transplanting, these banana seedlings reached the standard of first-grade packaged seedlings, with the number of expanded leaves reaching 6.6 to 7.6, the width of leaves reaching 6.5 cm to 7.3 cm, and the root system relatively developed. The comprehensive characteristics of the seedlings were all better than those of other treatments. The results of this study have certain reference significance for accelerating seedling growth in greenhouses and large-scale production of disease-free banana seedlings. The banana floating seedling system we developed did not need watering every day and may be simpler than other seedling raising methods.

Resumen
Conventional mat-type seedlings are still widely used in autonomous rice transplanters and automatically supplying seedling devices suited to conventional mat-type seedlings is difficult to develop. Thus, an autonomous rice transplanter carries at least one person to load the seedling pieces into the seedling box, which has led to an increase in the labor force and low operational efficiency. To solve this problem from another point of view, a machine vision-based system for the real-time monitoring of the seedling amount in a seedling box is developed. This system aims to achieve the monitoring of the fault of seedlings and seedling amount in the seedling box. According to the real-time and accuracy requirements of the image, the image acquisition platform is designed based on a previously developed autonomous rice transplanter. A camera model was developed and camera parameters for correcting the image distortion is obtained. The image processing method and segment method of seedling rows are presented. The algorithms for fault diagnosis and the calculation of the number of remaining seedlings are proposed by image analysis. The software is developed for seedling box fault diagnosis and monitoring the remaining number of seedlings. Field experiments are carried out to test the effectiveness of the developed monitoring system. The experimental results show that the image processing time is less than 1.5 s and the relative error of the seedling amount is below 3%, which indicates that the designed monitoring system can accurately realize the fault diagnosis of the seedling pieces and monitor for the remaining amount of each row. By combining the navigation information, the developed monitoring system can predict the distance from which the remaining seedlings in the seedling box can be planted, which can guarantee remaining seedlings in a seedling box are enough for transplanting until the rice transplanter returns to the supplying seedling site. This implies that one person can provide seedlings for multiple autonomous rice transplanters. This study was limited to supplying the seedling when the rice transplanter passed through the place of the seedling storage situated at the headland. In the future, we decide to conduct a study on path planning of breakpoint endurance so that the rice transplanter can automatically return to the supplying seedling place when the seedling amount in the seedling box is not enough.

Resumen
Ectomycorrhizae formation, seedling health index, and seedling survival were assessed for two-year-old nursery-grown seedlings of Pinus resinosa and Pinus strobus two months after planting in clear-cuts that had received prescribed burning under different fire intensities. Controls consisted of seedlings planted in unburned clear-cuts. Fire intensity positively correlated with percent ectomycorrhizal roots for P. strobus but not for P. resinosa. Seedling health index and survival were highest in burned-over sites as compared to control sites for both pine species. Fire intensity correlated with seedling health index for P. strobus but not for P. resinosa. Fire intensity correlated with seedling survival for both species. Colonization of seedlings by ectomycorrhizal fungi did not correlate with seedling health index or seedling survival. P. resinosa seedlings planted in burned-over sites had a smaller number of lateral roots per unit length primary/secondary roots compared to seedlings planted in control plots.

Resumen
Following the 1995 mast year, we conducted detailed seedling demography surveys to characterize some ecological factors affecting germination and early establishment in understory balsam fir (Abies balsamea (L.) Mill.) seedling banks and verify if recruitment from a cohort can potentially renew the balsam fir seedling bank. Twenty-five seed traps paired with 32 demography subplots were located in each of four permanent plots and regularly monitored over a 2-year period. Spatial patterns of newly emerged seedlings generally corresponded to those found for seed dispersal. However, at the end of the monitoring period, the spatial pattern of surviving seedlings was independent of the seed dispersal pattern. Seedbed types and understory light environments were the main factors explaining seedling mortality. Sphagnum mosses and decaying wood were the most favorable seedbeds for early establishment. The 0- to 25-cm seedling populations grew in size because of the addition of new recruits. If, in the years to come, mortality rates of the 1995 cohorts were similar to those of already established 0- to 25-cm seedlings, mast years of seed production, at least during endemic periods, would be crucial for recruitment and renewal of balsam fir seedling banks.

Resumen
A shade house experiment was conducted in Saudi Arabia to evaluate the impact of a mixture of three arbuscular mycorrhiza fungi (AMF) namely Funneliformis mosseae, Rhizophagus intraradices and Claroideoglomus etunicatum, a bacterium Bacillus subtilis, and their combinations on the growth and drought resistance potential of Acacia torilis seedlings under moderate and water deficit-stress. Thus, inoculants treatments (AMF, Bacillus subtilis, AMF+Bacillus, and control) and several watering intervals (1, 2, 3 and 4 weeks) were applied. Inoculation of AMF and Bacillus to A. tortilis seedlings found effective in terms of improved seedling growth. AMF and combined inoculation resulted in a larger shoot (shoot fresh and dry weights, seedling height, leaf number, leaf area) and root development (root fresh and dry weights, root length, root surface area, and root volume) as compared to the non-inoculated seedlings. Single inoculants of B. subtilis, showed better improvement in 1- and 2-week watering intervals compared to the control. Inoculated seedlings showed lower proline accumulation than non-inoculated seedlings, and thus improved seedling resistance to water deficit-stress. Mycorrhizal and mixed inoculation enhanced the amount of chlorophyll in the seedling’s leaves. Furthermore, seedlings with AMF and co-inoculants showed better drought tolerance even at 3- and 4-week watering intervals. © 2021 Friends Science Publishers

Resumen
Abstract During the growth process, plants require nutrients and have a symbiotic relationship with beneficial microbes. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of endophytic fungi inoculation and eco enzymes on the growth of Gmelina Seedlings. The endophytic fungi which were used were Ochroconis sp., Ascotricha sp., and Arthrinium malaysianum. Endophytic fungi inoculation into Gmelina Seedlings was carried out by watering fungal suspension onto the planting medium. The same method was carried out for the application of eco enzyme. The results showed that inoculation of the endophytic fungi A. malaysianum decreased the growth of Gmelina Seedling’s height and diameter. Inoculation of Ascotricha sp. decreased the growth of Gmelina Seedling height, and inoculation of Ochroconis sp. decreased the growth of Gmelina Seedling diameter. Endophytic fungi inoculation without eco enzymes could generate longer roots. As a result, shoot root ratio and seedling quality index showed that Gmelina Seedlings were ready to transplant in the field. The results of this study can be used as a reference in applying biological fertilizers to forestry plants.

Resumen
The purpose of this study was to investigate seedling recruitment beneath kanuka forest at Tiromoana Bush, North Canterbury. The regeneration of broadleaved tree species is evident throughout Tiromoana Bush. This research aimed to quantify the biotic and abiotic factors influencing the distribution of small and large seedlings of canopy tree species, their relative growth rates, their survival, abundance and composition throughout the forest understorey of Tiromoana Bush. Tiromoana Bush is a forest restoration area of 410 hectares adjacent to the Kate Valley landfill. To determine the future tree species composition at Tiromoana Bush, seedling recruitment, growth and survival was quantified through remeasuring tagged seedlings in 26 permanent vegetation monitoring plots located in the major forest patches at Tiromoana Bush. In addition, seedling data from 78 temporary vegetation survey plots established in three major forest patches were used to assess the influence of different factors on seedling abundance. At Tiromoana Bush, the most common canopy tree species as seedlings in the permanent vegetation monitoring plots was mahoe followed by fivefinger. Mahoe seedling density was significantly affected by canopy openness, distance to seed sources, light index, shrub cover and slope, but not by aspect, basal area and time. For fivefinger, seedlings increased in abundance with time, but the difference was not statistically significant. The relative growth rate of mahoe in the 20-49cm height class (in which most seedlings occurred) was significantly affected by shrub cover, light index and canopy vii openness. Mahoe seedling recruits were significantly affected by light index and canopy openness. Survivability of mahoe was affected by aspect. For fivefinger, individual relative growth rates were significantly affected by canopy openness and light index. Similar results were found for tree species seedlings present in the temporary survey plots provided with mahoe and fivefinger again the most common species, followed by kohuhu. Light index significantly affected golden akeake small seedlings as well as canopy openness. Light index significantly affected ngaio large seedling distribution. Aspect was the only significant factor for kohuhu large seedling distribution. Distance from seed sources significantly affected fivefinger small seedling distribution as seedlings are dependent upon dispersal away from the parent trees. Slope significantly affected the distribution of red matipou small seedlings. The most important environmental attribute influencing seedling abundance is light. This is evident in both the permanent seedling monitoring plots and the temporary vegetation survey plots. Based on data from the temporary vegetation survey plots, mahoe, fivefinger and kohuhu are most abundant suggesting that these three canopy tree species will dominate the forest canopy at Tiromoana Bush once the kanuka starts to senesce.

There has been limited research on the rooting patterns of alfalfa. This information would be important in developing new germplasm sources that are more water efficient, salt tolerant and drought tolerant. Ten alfalfa varieties were evaluated for possible genetic control of rooting traits. Seedlings were grown hydroponically in a growth chamber. The cultivars evaluated showed a significant statistical difference for width of lateral root system and number of lateral roots. The variation in seedling rooting patterns is sufficient to warrant a selection program for improved lateral rooting patterns.

Resumen
The tropical high forests of West Africa have been under stress due to a greater dependence on wood resources. Logging rate has more than doubled within the last decade. However, the exact effects of logging on vegetation composition and the degree of canopy opening that should be created in the forest to ensure the regeneration of timber tree species are not known. Three major experiments were carried out to determine the ecophysiological responses of timber tree species in different irradiances and red:far-red ratios. (1) 16 tree species were grown in six neutral shade treatments (2, 6, 27, 42 and 65% full sun) and their growth assessed by standard measurements used in growth analysis (biomass, height, stem diameter, leaf area, leaf production and mortality). (2) Eight species, of which six were also used in the shade house experiment, were grown in a series of artificially-created gaps in two forest sites differing in annual rainfall. Gaps created received 1-2, 5, 10, 15, 30 and 66% full sun. (3) Possible differences in the results between shade house and forest experiments due to differences in light quality (red:far-red ratio) were tested separately. Differences in red:far-red ratio has little effect of growth but showed some influence on allocation of biomass. Seedling growth response of species were higher in shade houses compared to the two field sites and higher in the wet compared to dry forests. Sixteen tropical timber tree species were ranked on an ecological (shade tolerance) gradient based on their differential growth response to light. The results indicate that the ranking of species on an ecological gradient is robust and potentially more reliable than intuitive classification of species into groups.

Texto completo
Resumen
The seagrass Zostera japonica Aschers. and Graebn. occurs as pure populations and in mixture with Zostera marina L. along the intertidal regions of southwest British Columbia. At the Roberts Bank study area seed and seedling dynamics were studied in three vegetation zones: a landward monospecific zone of Z. japonica, a zone of co-existing Z. japonica and Z. marina, and a seaward monospecific zone of Z. marina. Many more seeds were produced than were found in the sediment, and even fewer germinated. Zostera japonica seeds were most abundant in the seed bank in the upper zones where there is high Z. japonica density. Even though seeds remained in the water column for up to two months, very few seeds dispersed into the lower zone populated by Z. marina. thus limiting Z. japonica's colonization of the lower zones. It is unclear what limits the dispersal of Z. japonica seeds. Of the seeds that were incorporated into the sediment few germinated (5% or less). When seeds were planted in buckets placed into the sediment, with and without Z. marina, Z. japonica was able to germinate, grow, and reproduce in one year throughout the study area. Seedlings that emerged earliest (in April) either did not establish or did not survive as long as those seedlings that emerged later in May and June. Seedlings were often found uprooted, floating in the water. The rim of the buckets and the presence of Z. marina shoots appeared to protect the Z. japonica seedlings, preventing uprooting, but the results were not conclusive. Once seedlings became established, they spread vegetatively at a rapid rate and can persist throughout the winter, either as reduced shoots or as overwintering rhizomes. These overwintering plants contribute greatly to the following year's population.

Texto completo
Resumen
Buffelgrass (Pennisetum ciliare (L.) Link), a non-native perennial bunchgrass, invades ecologically intact areas of the Sonoran Desert. It competitively excludes native plants and increases fire frequency and intensity. Since the 1990s, whole buffelgrass plants have been manually uprooted and removed to control the invasion in southern Arizona. Uprooting plants results in bare, disturbed soil which promotes buffelgrass seed germination. This study examined whether leaving entire uprooted buffelgrass plants (thatch) on a field site reduces future buffelgrass establishment compared to removing uprooted plants from the site. A secondary goal was to determine whether light reduction and autoallelopathy were major factors in the negative effect of thatch on buffelgrass seedling density. Field plots with an average of 8,095 kg/ha thatch had 1.9 buffelgrass seedlings/m(2) which was significantly fewer than the 2.9 seedlings/m(2) in plots without thatch. Thatched portions of thatch plots (50% of their total area) had only 0.7 seedlings/m(2). In the greenhouse, which reduced outdoor light intensity by 35.2%, buffelgrass seeds sown in bare soil resulted in significantly higher seedling density than beneath buffelgrass thatch. Potential autoallelopathic chemicals leached from partially decomposed buffelgrass thatch and leached thatch had an intermediate but not significant (p = 0.09) effect on seedling numbers. Results suggest that leaving uprooted buffelgrass plants has the benefit of reducing seedling establishment in the area disturbed by uprooting.

Resumen
In Latvia one third of the total forest area is regenerated by planting tree seedlings and therefore it is important to choose the appropriate soil preparation method and the right type of regeneration material for each forest type. Usually the success of afforestation is evaluated by how high is the average seedling survival rate and growth parameters like height, annual increment, diameter at breast height while the location of the seedling is disregarded. This may be of great importance since in such stands the environmental conditions typically are not entirely homogenous. Micro topography differences impact seedling growth, because it modifies water regime, temperature, micronutrient availability, sun radiation and other factors. Therefore, aim of this work is to improve monitoring methods and determine the most efficient soil preparation and seedling preparation combination to improve the quality of forest regeneration. That could be done using ASTA documentation system originally developed to show seedling and mound location and density in planting area during mechanic planting. But it also allows to link the precise location of the seedling and growing conditions with its growing rate and survival and therefore it is easier to exclude seedlings that are affected by other factors than those that you are interested in, so you can gain more representative results. This also could be used in forest management. When using ASTA system it is also possible to display how different tree disease are distributed in the stand, if they have spread eventually or localized only in some parts of the stand, also it can be used for browsing and other tree damage monitoring in the stand. In conclusion: in harsh environmental conditions on unprepared forest soil and soil prepared in furrows made by disc trench larger seedlings show better survival rate. Survival of seedlings is significantly impacted by micro topography, whereas mounded micro sites equalize local environmental conditions that reduce impact of micro topography.

Resumen
The water balance of agro ecological systems is a key parameter for most physical and physiological processes with the system soil–crop–climate. Therefore it is of great importance to calculate the water budget parameters in the required scale. The field study was conducted in the period of 2002–2005. Seedlings were planted in Irrigation engineering department experimental fields at the Lithuanian University of Agriculture. Seedlings were grown under standard nursery cultural practices until being transplanted into new fields in mid April 2002 and 2004. The research site contains evaporators and 8 lysimeters in which spruce seedlings were grown and studied. Lysimeters amount 42 m2 and 30 m2. At 2002, field No.1 was irrigated 8 times, irrigation norm was 250 m3 ha-1 and seedling got 2000 m3 ha-1 water. Field No.2 was irrigated 6 times, irrigation norm – 1500 m3 ha-1. In 2003 fields No. 1 and No. 2 were irrigated 4 times and seedlings got 1000 m3 ha-1 water. At 2004, field No.1 was irrigated 8 times, irrigation norm was 250 m3 ha-1 and seedling got 2000 m3 ha-1 water. Field No.2 was irrigated 6 irrigation norm – 1500 m3 ha-1. The total evapotranspiration of the first year seedlings planted in the field No.1 in 2004 made up 323 mm. The total evapotranspiration of the seedlings growing in variant No. 2 was 307 mm in 2004 and it is by 16 mm less as compared to variant No.1.

Resumen
The test of accelerated aging of seeds (AAS) was applied on 7 genotypes of durum wheat, and the morphophysiological parameters of seeds and seedlings, such as dynamics of seed germination, length of seedling roots, fresh and dry biomass of seedlings, were investigated. The genotypic features of collection samples of durum wheat were identified after exposure to stress factors (high temperature and humidity). Such a grouping of genotypes according to their potential ability to preserve the viability of seeds is an important complex characteristic of collection samples when they are placed for long-term storage in a plant gene bank.

Resumen
We studied the effect of the growth regulator Regoplant on the mass of seedlings, the quality of seedlings and the productivity of tobacco. Soaking tobacco seeds before sowing in a 0.0001 % solution of the preparation at an exposure of 6 hours, and then spraying the plants at the stage of “auricles” and “seedling ready for planting” with a working solution of an agrochemical with a 0.00001 % concentration significantly improved the quality of seedlings. This technique increases the length of tobacco seedlings to the apical point by 66 %, to the end of elongated leaves by 29 %, the mass of stems by 53 %, the mass of roots by 32 %, the diameter of the stem by 38 %. After planting the plants in the field, developed under the influence of the Regoplant stimulator, we noted an increase in productivity by 16 % and an improvement in the quality of raw materials due to an increase in carbohydrates and a decrease in proteins. The economic effect against the background of the application of Regoplant preparation amounted to 106 thousand rubles.

Resumen
This study aimed to examine the effect of different media - Murashige Skoog (MS) and Gamborg (B5) on the growth and development of in vitro seedling cultures of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). The effects were evaluated through the measurement of root and shoot length, fresh and dry mass, as well as through the determination of the concentration of photosynthetic pigments (chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, and carotenoids). The obtained data indicate that MS has better effects on the growth and development of wheat seedlings, since longer shoot length, and better fresh weight were observed on seedlings from this type of media. Additionally, higher chlorophyll b concentration and lower carotenoid concentration were measured in wheat leaves grown on MS medium. It can be concluded that MS is more suitable for establishing the initial in vitro culture of wheat compared to the B5 medium.
