Greciano, Pierre-Alain. "La station balnéaire d’Étretat (1850-1960) : entre circulation internationale des modèles de balnéarisation et quête d’une image singulière". Electronic Thesis or Diss., La Rochelle, 2022. http://www.theses.fr/2022LAROF006.
Texto completoThis thesis is based on the following observation: the literature on the history of the seaside resort of Étretat from around 1850 onwards is relatively old, and the few studies carried out suggest that this process is strictly deterministic, with the particular amenities of this village's site necessarily dictating its future in terms of tourism. However, the available sources suggest the fundamental influence of causalities of a completely different nature. The main aim of this research is, on the one hand, to highlight the importance of the seaside circulation process in the birth and development of the resort of Étretat between the middle of the 19th century and 1960, and, on the other hand, the fact that it is truly a case study. Seaside circulation is a dynamic phenomenon based on both material (e.g. means of transport allowing sufficiently convenient access) and immaterial (press, literature, advertising, tourist guides, etc.) elements, the combination of which creates a "desire" for a given place that is conducive to potential tourist development. We intend to show that if, in a certain way, the birth and development of this destination are largely unthought of (since it was supposedly self-evident), it is because they result from the construction of an image in which the techniques of storytelling (e.g. the founding myth of this resort, which is the first sea bathing taken by two young aristocrats in 1842) have their part. The lessons we have learned from this are likely to contribute to the reflection on the history of seaside resorts and of circulation in general
