Texto completoI have done my paper in quest of “neutral Italian”, that national, standard, unitary language which is a model for all regional and individual variations. I have dealt with the topic historically : I have singled out the most meaningful stages of this cultural debate (an essential component of the matter of the Italian language) examining school curricula, theories and lack of implementation. The first part of my paper focuses on the dichotomy between plain language and dialect while the second part deals with the contrasting realities of “neutral Italian” and “regional Italians” The cultural debate has shown the existence of continuing interest in a linguistic model for the spoken language tracing a sort of “geometrical” history of the language, going from the Florentine hub, to the “ Florence-Rome axis” and then to the “ northern triangle” finally to get to the most recent theories about the “geophonic centre”. As regards the school world I have detected the lack of an efficacious, structured linguistic policy on the spoken language other than on the written and the grammatical one.

Texto completoAmong the most influential revolutions of the 20th century historiography - from the Annales to the return to narrative history, through the key concepts of microhistory and biographical turn – while seeking for the “black box of schooling”, the recent international and national historical-educational researches have turned their attention to the theory of “school as a living reality”. Notably, the observational study of the classroom empirical culture as well as of the school material culture has received significant contributions from the focus on the teaching profession, whose multiple dimensions have also been investigated from a biographic point of view. Within this theorethical framework, this work attempts to portray the life of Cesare Malservisi as primary school teacher, librarian, dialect songwriter and intellectual during the Postwar years in Bologna. Starting from the analysis of the reference coeval literature, the primary focus of this research is to investigate the family personal archive whose sources shift from Cesare Malservisi’s career, private life, professional activity to the school material culture. For instance, while aiming to build a “plural biography”, sources have been classified, analyzed, intertwined and integrated with interviews conducted with witnesses who have personally met Cesare Malservisi. The picture that emerges from this study confirms the complexity of Malservisi’s teacher role whose professional development coexist with his engagement to society, and parallely explores the local pedagogic and teaching scene, with special attention to the intense socio-political and educational ferment of the Postwar years in Bologna, a subject that has not yet been thoroughly investigated.

Texto completoIn this work the history of High School education in Sardinia during Fascism has been reconstructed. Until now, historiography has never dealt with this theme. On the contrary, it devoted itself to Primary School education, only in some zones of Sardinia, and to High School education in the two capitals of Province, Cagliari and Sassari, mainly through a historical archives analysis of Classical, Scientific and Teaching education schools, as part of the social history and of the Island culture as the whole. It is a theme of great significance for various reasons. First of all, it concerns School history, that is fundamental for the life of a Country and that assumed a â strategicâ relevance during Fascism. That is because the regime assigned a very important role to youth education and indoctrination to obtain popular consent and, consequently, to legitimation. Secondly, it concerns the history of a land like Sardinia with its peculiarities and specificness, much more evident in a centralized regime like the Fascist one. This research is based on the historical archives analysis of Classical, Scientific and Teaching Schools of the chief towns of that period, Cagliari, Sassari and Nuoro. Of course, the Sardinian school events have been considered in a national context, both bearing in mind the outline of historiography about Fascism and its school politics, and reconstructing the authoritative evolution of the set of rules about some school aspects of that period, through searches in the Ministry Education Official Gazette. Moreover, some searches in documents of the Central Record Office in Rome and of the Record Office in Nuoro permitted to supplement and complete the information derived from school historical archives material. They also allowed to reconstruct events that we do not have any documentation of in school archives, documentation that turned out to be fundamental especially to delineate relations between the different schools and the local context where they carried out their educational functions.

Texto completoOver the past twenty years there have been some international perspectives on the analysis of the problems of school science and some consequent strategies for educational change. Many studies have pointed to a new concept of scientific literacy as a fundamental knowledge, prior to career choices and relevant for every student. The starting hypothesis of this research argues that some of these analyses and the main idea of a non-vocational scientific literacy show significant limitations when related to the Italian context. The specificities of the latter are addressed, first, from a comparative point of view, discussing few international reports on science education. This comparison has highlighted the difficulty of having a set of clear and definitive evidences on the problems of science education discussed by these documents, in particular through the data concerning the crisis in scientific vocations and students’ attitudes towards science. Also the institutional framework of the Italian high schools shows how the educational recommendations and some curricular projects, discussed within the international community, find some important obstacles due to principles of selection and to different school tracks for the upper secondary level. The present work is based primarily on a historical and pedagogical reconstruction of the physics curriculum, through national guidelines, syllabi, and the analysis of some representative textbooks of the last decades. This study of the “intended” curriculum revealed, firstly, the “academic” nature of high school physics and its weak educational value, secondly, the impact, of the international issues discussed, on educational aims and learning tools embodied in textbooks. Despite the evolution of these features of the curriculum, the analysis of historical and philosophical knowledge used by textbooks has highlighted the lack of a cultural contextualization of physics as one of the main obstacles to promoting a more relevant science education.

Texto completoGRISOLIA, FRANCESCO.
Texto completoIgnazio Enrico Hugford (1703-1778) was a painter of English parentage who was trained in Florence under Anton Domenico Gabbiani. As art dealer and connoisseur, he was among the most important collectors of works of art in eighteenth-century Florence and had prolific and wideranging contacts throughout Europe. He was in close touch with Francesco Maria Niccolò Gabburri, and his correspondents also included Pierre Jean Mariette and Giovanni Gaetano Bottari. He was also active as an art historian. Hugford was the first collector in Florence to be interested and to promote works of art of the so called “primitives” and put together a vaste collection of paintings, sculptures and drawings of all schools and every century. Among the over three thousand sheets bequeathed to his heirs and acquired in 1779 for the Uffizi by its director Giuseppe Pelli Bencivenni, the most part was assigned to artists of the tuscan school, followed by all the artists strongly active in Rome, that can be identified as roman school. All the most important artists of both schools were represented in his drawings collection. The attentive descriptions of Pelli’s manuscript inventory, the characteristic mounts applied by Hugford and his inscriptions on some of the sheets have made it possible to identify almost all of these drawings, now in the Gabinetto Disegni e Stampe degli Uffizi. Research has also revealed Hugford’s talent as connoisseur, his interest in certain artists, especially for those who can be related to a classical ideal of art. Although many of Hugford’s attributions are no longer acceptable, the identification of individual drawings has made it possible to reconstruct their collecting history, to confirm their authorship, and in some cases to suggest new attributions

Texto completoThe research aims to investigate the relationships that Ellen Key had with the founders of the new schools in Europe at the turn of the twentieth century and the contribution she offered to their dissemination. At the beginning of the twentieth century Ellen Key was at the center of the pedagogical and feminist debate, not only in Sweden but throughout Central Europe, and also in Italy, where she made long stays (in 1900-1901 and in 1906-1908). The Swedish pedagogue was an intellectual who strenuously supported the speech and press freedom. She promoted a Charter of children's rights and some social policies for the protection of motherhood and the mother-child relationship. At the turn of the twentieth century a series of innovative pedagogical experiments emerged. They started from the Abbotsholme school founded by Cecil Reddie in 1889, and spread in France with the foundation of the Ecole des Roches by Edmond Demolins, in Germany with the country home-schools (Landerziehungsheime) of Ilseburg, Haubinda and Bieberstein, founded by Hermann Lietz, the school community of Wickersdorf and the Paul Geheeb’s Odenwaldschule. Ellen Key related to these important pedagogical experiments and, thanks to her continuous movements, she visited some new schools. The research starts from the analysis of the manuscripts and correspondence of the Ellen Key collection, preserved at the Royal Library in Stockholm and of Ellen Key’s private library at Villa Strand. From the analysis of the documents it emerges how the Swedish writer assumed a role of mediator for the dissemination of the New Schools which in the early years of the twentieth century reached a high degree of diffusion.

Texto completoThe educational system of Southern Italy since 1806 to 1861 presents different levels of efficiency for any of the three branches of education taken into consideration in this research (primary school, secondary school and schools of agriculture). As for primary school, it was a very frail system, mainly due to the poverty of municipalities, which, according to the law, had to support it. Teachers used to have poor salaries, and, as a consequence, had few skills. As regards the schools of agriculture, the government tried to establish them in the whole Kingdom in 1840, according to a organic government bill. Anyway these schools arose only in one third of the municipalities, and had serious problems, such as scarcity of resources, lack of teachers, and badly-furnished buildings. As for secondary school, the situation is very different. Colleges were financed not only by municipalities and local governments, but also by boarders. Sounder economic bases meant a wide supply of courses, sometimes ranging to university disciplines. Unlike their colleagues of primary school, teachers had relatively good salaries, and, consequently, good professional skills.

Texto completoThe textbook, in its dual aspect of educational support and publishing and social product, is a precious source to reconstruct educational, teaching, cultural and political history from the second half of the eighteenth century to the first decades of the twentieth century. This thesis aims to underline the educational and teaching value of school literature and the role played by school in the education of Italian children through a quantitative and a qualitative analysis of the main reading textbooks published in Lombardy between the nineteenth and the twentyth centuries. After a general overview of the editorial school production of the Italian situation, the research focus on the contents, the iconography and linguistic form of 65 reading textbooks, adopted nationally in the elementary schools and published in the decades after the unification (1871-1923) by important Lombard publishers, such as Agnelli, Risveglio Educativo, Trevisini and Vallardi.
