AbstractOmnia in mensura et numero et pondere disposuisti is a famous Latin phrase from Solomon’s Book of Wisdom, dated to the mid first century BC, meaning that all things were ordered in measure, number, and weight. Naturally, the wisdom is appearing in its relation to man. The Wisdom of Solomon is understood as the perfection of knowledge of the righteous as a gift from God showing itself in action. Consequently, a natural and obvious conjecture is that measurement science is the science of sciences. In fact, it is a basis of all experimental and theoretical research activities. Each measuring process assumes an object of measurement. Some science disciplines, such as quantum physics, are still incomprehensible despite complex mathematical interpretations. No phenomenon is a real phenomenon unless it is observable in space and time, that is, unless it is a subject to measurement. The science of measurement is an indispensable ingredient in all scientific fields. Mathematical foundations and interpretation of the measurement science were accepted and further developed in most of the scientific fields, including physics, cosmology, geology, environment, quantum mechanics, statistics, and metrology. In this year, 2020, Measurement Science Review celebrates its 20th anniversary and we are using this special opportunity to highlight the importance of measurement science and to express our faith that the journal will continue to be an excellent place for exchanging bright ideas in the field of measurement science. As an illustration and motivation for usage and further development of mathematical methods in measurement science, we briefly present the simple least squares method, frequently used for measurement evaluation, and its possible modification. The modified least squares estimation method was applied and experimentally tested for magnetic field homogeneity adjustment.

Die in diesem Papier vertretene These lautet, daß Pflegewissenschaft ihr innovatorisches Potential vor allem auch daraus ziehen wird, daß sie das in unterschiedlichen Nachbardisziplinen/Bezugswissenschaften entwickelte und verfügbare Wissen aufgreift, jedoch hinsichtlich pflegerischer Belange/Probleme spezifiziert und reformuliert. Auf zwei Ebenen wird diese These entfaltet: zunächst unter wissenschaftstheoretischen bzw. methodologischen Gesichtspunkten, sodann vor allem unter inhaltlichen Gesichtspunkten der Adoption interdisziplinär aufgefächerten Wissens. Pflegewissenschaftliche Integrationsformen unterschiedlicher Wissenschaftsdisziplinen werden abschließend an einem Beispiel, d.h. an qualifikatorischen Anforderungen an die Pflege von Patienten mit Schlaganfall, demonstriert.

The aim in this article is to explore conditions of possibility for giving life to science in the context of science being under siege from the twin agendas of industrialization and managerialization. The focus of this exploration is my experiencing a shift from being brought in as an ally in the strategic conduct of others to then becoming engaged in the life sciences of ageing. In nuancing these different ways of ‘being alongside’, I show how social and life scientists’ attachment and detachment to things can bring them into intimate entanglement with each other’s world-making. Keeping in view possibilities for breaching the dividing practices by which each of us are emplaced, I focus on gatherings that give science life and so get beyond things as ‘ as others want them’.

Cet article examine la définition, par Ramus, des normes de chaque science et l’influence de la critique de ce modèle ramiste dans l’émergence, au tournant du XVIIe siècle, d’une vision de la philosophie comme système de toutes les sciences. En étudiant la manière dont Bartholomäus Keckermann décrit les conditions qui permettent d’envisager la philosophie comme système des systèmes, on remarque la nette diffraction de l’héritage aristotélicien (principalement les Analytica posteriora) dans les thèses ramistes d’une part, dans l’approche systématique de Keckermann par rapport aux disciplines philosophiques d’autre part. Cette différence a eu un fort impact sur les fonctions attribuées à la logique (Ramus) et à la métaphysique (Keckermann) dans l’architecture des savoirs.

Modern mentality tends to minimize what is real to a physical world that is accessible to its senses, instruments, reasoning and equations, ignoring other states of reality that, clearly throughout humanity’s history have been known. Modern human believes that he is capable of dispensing all knowledge from what he has been taught in the past by starting over again, trusting only their point of view and their own new prejudices. His attention increasingly focusing outwards prevents him from looking inwards, towards the center of consciousness, of being, which is, however, the first data that has been imposed on us and the basis on which necessarily everything else rests. A physical analysis of a piece of music or a painting, however scientific it might be, does not annul the meaning- so deeper and on another type of level-shows that the reality of a work of art is much more than its physical components. This objective work creates communication bonds interconnecting classical and modern science, relating different areas of knowledge. Like the invisible presence of microorganisms that participate in the evolution of nature, we intend to give a new approach to recovering the empirical knowledge long way forgotten by modern science in order to strengthen the reality of the parts that do not precede the whole, but when are born acquire sense together with the whole. Their role as “parts” is only a role in the cognitive process, not in the generative process.

The contributors to this discussion teach in three different Faculties at the University of East Anglia (UEA) – Science, Arts & Humanities and Medicine & Health Sciences. They have each used science fiction to explore learning outcomes in their distinct teaching practices. The discussion below highlights how contemporary science fiction can operate as a touchstone for debate that informs biochemistry teaching. Laura, Helen and Richard have all studied basic sciences, gaining PhDs in various aspects of biochemistry and molecular biology, and each have taught undergraduates and postgraduates at UEA. Helen and Richard are based in the Faculty of Science. Laura is based in the Faculty of Medicine & Health Sciences, and uses her interest in science communication to explore university teaching practices that involve science fiction. Christine gained a PhD from her research of technology and performance in science fiction film and is based in the Faculty of Arts & Humanities.

Confirming the identity of the accused is a critical component of many criminal trials. However, recent evidence suggests this process is highly error prone and leads to unacceptably high rates of wrongful conviction (Innocence Project, 2015). When photographic identification evidence is ambiguous, facial mapping practitioners may be called upon to make comparisons between images of the culprit and the accused. This practice assumes that the techniques employed are reliable and can be used to assist the court in making identity confirmation decisions. However, previous experimental work in this area has established that many of these techniques are unreliable (Kleinberg, Vanezis & Burton, 2007; Strathie, McNeill & White, 2012). We extend these findings by examining another facial mapping technique that uses gridlines, drawn between face-pairs, as a potential face matching aid (Oxlee, 2007). Results show that a simple side-by-side presentation of face-pairs without gridlines produces most accurate responding. Moreover, the application of the grideline technique increases the likelihood that two different face pairs will judged to be the same. These findings suggest that continuing to admit facial mapping evidence in court is likely to increase, rather than decrease, the incidence of wrongful conviction.

The paper reports on the findings made on an experiential exercise of Bachelor of Science Honours in Statistics (BSc Hons Stat) in the Department of Statistics and Operations Research (SOR) of the Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University (SMU) in South Africa. SOR is a small, understaffed department, which offers courses for degrees from Bachelor to Doctoral levels in the subfields of Artificial Intelligence, Data Mining, Operations Research, Statistics and related ones. On SMU campus, expertize in some of these fields is also available in the Department of Computer Science (DCS). In the 2015 academic year SOR admitted 20 BSc Hons Stat students beyond its staffing capacity. Then, SOR invited DCS in a crowdsourcing initiative to jointly supervise student projects in the various subfields mentioned. The challenges include conflict and limited experience. These are managed satisfactorily though, but mainly because they occur at low levels. This crowdsourcing arrangement nevertheless results in timely submissions of final projects, improved quality projects worthy of being published, innovation, quality teamwork, and some synergistic outcomes. Coordinators also learn and/or improved some project management skills

On the occasion of the 1150th anniversary of the birth of Al-Farabi, many scientific conferences, round tables, and scientific research was held and books dedicated to the legacy of Abu Nasir Al-Farabi were published in the country. Farabi scientists studied the works of Farabi thoroughly and explained Al-Farabi’s ideas to the public. Nevertheless, further research is needed. The article is devoted to the study of Al-Farabi’s views on the classification of sciences. To master any science, some methods and techniques are necessary. Such methods are a tool for revealing the final and deep essence of the studied field of science. Al-Farabi was one of the first in the history of philosophy who classified the sciences and defined each science. As the founder of the direction of scientism in Islamic philosophy, Al-Farabi pointed out that science plays a key role in human life. The role of science has not decreased in the current millennium. It is difficult to imagine the modern world without science. On the contrary, mixed sciences are gaining momentum, and the role of science in everyday life is increasing. The article focuses on the purpose of science and its role in human life in AlFarabi’s treatise “The Sequence of Sciences”.

AbstractAims: The paper focuses on the methodological frames of Library and Information Sciences vis-à-vis Web Science in the light of the OECD Fields of Science and Technology Classification. The roots of Library Science and Information Science in Humanities and Social Sciences are described. The technological revolution which took place during and after World War II enabled the development of a new mathematics- and engineering-oriented environment for information. On this basis such new research areas like Web Science emerged. It led to a change towards an interdisciplinary character of Information Science. Method: The OECD Fields of Science and Technology Classification was analysed from the point of view of the Library and Information Science’s place in this classification.Solutions: In the OECD Fields of Science and Technology Classification Library Science has its independent place within Social Sciences while Information Science is dispersed between three main sections. It confirms the interdisciplinary character of Information Science and sets up its name as a superior covering traditional Information Science and all of new mathematics- and engineering- based research areas dealing with information. Although the name Web Science is not mentioned in this classification, we can assume that it is a sub-discipline of Information Science in the light of the OECD classification. Polish implications are mentioned.

Citizen science, research in which members of the public actively contribute scientific data, has recently evolved as a means to support scientific inquiry in the classroom, particularly in fields related to ecology and environmental science. Our research focuses on a collaborative project with teacher candidates, a science education professor, and a social studies education professor at a Canadian university. Teacher candidates were engaged in the classroom and beyond as they explored topics related to civics education and evidence-based decision making. Our findings demonstrate the potential effectiveness of a citizen science lens for science, social studies, and generalist teachers. Key Words: citizen science, citizenship/civics education, science education, social studies education, teacher education La science citoyenne, c'est-à-dire la recherche dans laquelle les membres du public contribuent activement aux données scientifiques, a récemment évolué comme un moyen de soutenir la recherche scientifique en classe, en particulier dans les domaines liés à l'écologie et aux sciences de l'environnement. Notre recherche porte sur un projet de collaboration avec de futurs enseignants, un professeur d'enseignement des sciences et un professeur d'enseignement des sciences sociales dans une université canadienne. Les candidats à l'enseignement se sont engagés dans la salle de classe et au-delà en explorant des sujets liés à l'éducation civique et à la prise de décision fondée sur des preuves. Nos résultats démontrent l'efficacité potentielle d'une optique de science citoyenne pour les professeurs de sciences, d'études sociales et les enseignants généralistes. Resumen
PKM activities are carried out in partner schools in the form of training for Mathematics and Natural Sciences teachers to overcome the problems they are facing. Some of the obstacles that are being faced are that science teachers still have difficulty applying integrated science learning according to the demands of the 2013 curriculum. The targets to be achieved in the implementation of this PKM program include increasing the professional competence of teachers in implementing integrated science learning. Activities are designed in several stages, namely 1) coordinating with partner schools for implementation time, 2) providing material related to integrated science learning, 3) Mentoring for Natural Sciences teachers in designing integrated science material and 4) program evaluation. This activity was not only attended by Natural Sciences teachers in partner schools but several Natural Sciences teachers in schools around partner schools were also joined. Participants in the activity were Natural Sciences teachers from SMP N 1 Nekamese, SMP N 2 Nekamese, SMP N 4 Nekamese, and SMP N 5 Nekamese. The participants were quite enthusiastic in participating in this activity, seen from the enthusiasm for joining the activity and dynamic discussions

Resumen
It is true that climate change and its implications are given much more attention now, after the COP21 Agreement in Paris. There are almost weekly conferences about global warming and the debate is intense all over the globe. This is a positive, but one must point out the exclusive focus upon natural science and technological issues, which actually bypasses the thorny problems of international governance and the coordination of states. The social science aspects of global warming policy-making will be pointed out in this article. This is a problematic by itself that reduces the likelihood of successful implementation of the goals of the COP21 Agreement (Goal I, Goal II and Goal III in global decarbonistion).
